I’m graduating this June.
OK, this might be better on the Complaints and Rants thread, but since it relates to graduation, I’m going to post it here. At my school, the eighth grade graduation ceremony THEME is “Across the Universe.” First, what the heck is that supposed to mean? And second, why does there have to be a theme at all? Why do there have to be all these happy smiley motivational posters with cheery slogans written in bubble letters? What happened to a bit of dignity and solemnity?
I’m not graduating for… *counts on fingers* Three years a couple of months.
Yeah.
A lot my friends/acquaintances are graduating, though.
(2) The slogan “Across the Universe” was the title of a popular movie released earlier this year, about young people in the 1960s. The movie, in turn, was named after a psychedelic song by the Beatles. The committee in charge of graduation probably picked the slogan because they liked the sound of it, but I’ll bet Kai Yves could give them some good ideas.
4- I just had a mental image of a rocket on the way to the moon entering its second stage….
Not graduating for two years, one month and a week or two.
June 2010.
2- They have 8th grade graduations? Dang, I missed it.
Well, “Across the Universe” is a lot better than some I’ve heard…
4- Oh yeah, that.
i am almost a senior
this frightens me
i’ll have to go to graduation in june, the band always plays. i hope they get somebody good, last year they had frank lesser (a writer for the colbert report and a grad of our high school) and he was hilarious.
senior project starts in about two weeks (after AP tests) so all the seniors will be gone anyway (or most of them). Senior project really feels like graduation, because there are no seniors around.
4- ooh i love that movie!!
um, let’s see..something about graduation…well, i’m graduating from my school in five years, so i don’t know why i’m even on this thread.
I graduate this July… from middle school.
Sigh… Again, I feel small here. I should leave.
1) Congratulations!
8) Also congraulations! I am also v. envious of your school. love the colbert report
Class of 2010 right here, sadly enough. I’m looking forward to it of course. For the grad night in previous years they’ve basically locked all the seniors in a Dave and Buster’s for the night lol. The last week of school is all senior activities as well, so I imagine that will be fun, especially Disneyland.
What will those of you graduating be doing at school for the occasion?
4 – I hate that movie! It ruined all of the songs!
My graduation was mercifully short, even though we had a tie for valedictorian and therefore had 3 student speeches along with all the obligatory faculty speeches. And I got a Math & Science award!
Well, I graduate on May 29…
From 6th grade!
I’m only graduating from elementary school!
I graduate from 8th grade on June 14! I AM GOING TO HIGH SCHOOL. Me In high school is such a scary thought.
4- *swoon* I ADORE that movie!!!!! It’s so creative, even if the ending is sad… I have the album, it ROCKS… and Jim Sturgess is my favorite actor of all time. You are SO lucky.
I have a sixth grade graduation. I mean, COME ON, people.
I’m graduating from high school on June 3rd. When we finished Eighth Grade, the called it recognition as we weren’t actually graduating. They called it graduation in sixth grade and in kindergarten though.
I’m excited to go to college though. The school I think I’m going to has strong departments in a lot of the areas I’m interested in studying.
I’m graduating form Middle school thios year wich is great eccept that the anyoing people on the school board make you wear a pastell dress. I love fancy dresses and all but it REALLY REALLY HARD to find a pastell dress. If your curious what mine looks like I think thers a picture of it on the May Day Ball thread. It’s the dress i posted( but I’m not the one wearing the dress she’s just some model.
I live in a teensy town, so we go to grade school until sixth grae. Then, when we graduate, it’s really sad because we’ve been going there since kindergarten and you know everyone (there’s only like 300-something people). Anyway, we have a Recognition Night, and they show a slide show for graduation, and people cry, etc. I’m just glad to be going to middle school next year. It gets annoying when kindergarteners are running up and down the halls in a school with middle-school age kids.
17 – Ah, yes our middle school’s eighth grade graduation. Actually, my dress wasn’t too hard to find, but it was difficult finding something for a friend I went shopping with.
High school = terrifying.
Me = small.
People = annoying because they bug me about “OOH, YOU’RE GOING TO DRIVE IN SENIOR YEAR!”
Did I mention high school = terrifying?
More middle school age Musers than I thought, haha. WORST STAGE OF LIFE EVER. just saying. High school is much better (well for me at least, but I think most people agree on that) so don’t worry too much. Saying that as someone at a school with 3000+ kids. ugh.
12) At my brother’s graduation, there was a valedictorian and two co-salutitaorians.
I am graduating on the 13th of May and the only real work i have to do until then are finals!!! Heck yeah!!! (even though i hate exams)
2- The beatles, of course. The song is awesome, you should definitely listen to it :). I’m not graduating for a LONG time!
But (random factoid) Across the Universe is being sent out across the universe to the north star! I was incredibly happy when I heard (which was a long time ago) . Those who are graduating, congrats!
18-err. I thought everyone went to elementary school until sixth grade. mine was K-6 and so were most others around here. There are a few that are K-8. Then junior high is 7th and 8th and senior high is 9th-12th.
I’m not graduating, I’m just dropping out of public school in two months.
Yay for after schools!! and after school culture. Horses, music, mohawks, and dreadlocks. I shall fit in nicely.
I’m excited.
25- *is jealous* *thinks* No, I changed my mind. I’m not jealous. Well, I’m sort of jealous, but school’s been good for me. And it’s my only access to theater.
24 – Really? In all the places I’ve lived Elementary school is K-5, Middle School/Junior High is 6-8, and High School is 9-12.
Actually, that’s not even how it worked for me, because my middle school is weird and starts in 5th grade.
I am going into highschool next year. No graduation as far as I know.
In my old school, middle started in 5th and in my new school it technically starts at 4, but thats only symbolic. It really starts at 6th.
12-no, it remade the songs, which is much better than trying to make exact copies which always turn out lame and not as good as the original. i liked what they did with a lot of the songs.
16-where are you going? i forget, if you’ve even told me. i don’t remember if you have.
21-hear, hear. middle school was not fun.
24-the district i’m in now is K-6 (i think) and then 7-8 and 9-12. where i went to elementary and middle school (and junior high) had K-4, then 5-6 and a junior high of 7-8. then 9-12.
but the building is a big long thing with an elementary on one side, a middle school on the other and then high school in the middle. so we have to share the cafeteria with small children, which is why we have open lunches (no high schoolers eat in the cafeteria, except a few dumb freshmen. most people find a hallway or go out to eat)
there are two other elementary schools, and we spend most of our time hanging out at the playgrounds (yeah, we’re cool…)
don’t worry, small chilluns, high school’s a party. and hazing has been scientifically proven to make you enjoy something more (it’s true, learned it in psych. dk (the principal-dk for dr. kellogg) should take that class)
on that note, can’t wait until band camp. *is going to be a senniiooor, can’t believe it*
I’m glad to hear that high school’s better than middle school. In my school, if you’re a fraction different from everybody else, you might as well paint a target on your chest and wear a sign saying OSTRACIZE ME. I kid you not- a guy was teased about the shape of his shirt collar.
30- At least at mine, it’s way different. No one does that, or at least the people who do I (fortunately) never talk to and never see. My advice is to just be friends with people you like and don’t bother with the people you don’t. There’s always some drama, sure, but for the most part I’ve avoided a lot of it.
30- Wow.
I have learned that school is not about knowledge or understanding (although I’m sure being quick on the uptake helps, even if it does bore you half to death when the teacher has to explain something to the class for the fifth time, and you already get it), but about knowing what to say and when to say it. It doesn’t matter what your opinion is, or whether you understand how such-and-such a thing works, you just say what the higher authorities want you to say, and you’ll get by. It’s really quite sad. In Science you actually do have to understand things, which is one reason I like it. It makes you think.
But it’s very disappointing. And if you don’t have a good teacher the class becomes an hour and a half of pure misery.
Most people are nice to me, but I don’t really feel well-liked anymore. Most of the people I hang out with either treat me like I’m a baby or just plain ignore me. It’s very unpleasant. I don’t like the class of 2011 very much at all. The class of 2010 is better. *wishes she was a sophomore*
But that was a bit off-topic, so I will end with the statement that I cannot wait for my graduation.
(32) The trick is to find a way to jump through their hoops while getting what you need out of the process. It’s not easy, but it can be done — not in every case, perhaps, but more often than you’d think. I didn’t really figure that out until graduate school.
30 – Wow.
In my school, if you’re different, everyone notices, but nobody really comments. Except if you did something completely different to your look. Like chop off 5 inches of your hair. Or dye it blond. You get teased if you… um… ah… er… AHA! Height is something to be teased about in our school.
Short = teased.
Tall = teaser
People are pretty tolerant of others at my school. Though some probably notice themselves being teased more and there might be more teasing between friends than outside of them. I guess it is just more awkward to interact with people outside your usual social group no matter what way you’re doing it. People will talk about you with others some if you do something which others consider extremely outlandish. One student wore a bit of chain mail to school and people would talk about him a bit. I don’t notice all that much outright teasing, though then again it might happen among others.
Height is a serious teasing issue at our school. I have gotten a lot of grief from it, even though I’m taller than 80% of the other people my age (officially 50th percentile nationwide).
there’s really not that much teasing at my school. or social groups at all, for that matter. it’s such a small school that everybody pretty much has to get along or be miserable, so you become friends with a lot of different people
and i have friends who are 6’5” and friends who are shorter than 5′ so while there is a lot of teasing about height, it’s not like anybody cares.
I just can’t wait until I’m out of the school I’m in. I HATE it, everything about it. I have no friends. *tear tear*
36 – Well, if I recall correctly, you’re also two years younger than the rest of your grade, so the fact that you’re shorter doesn’t exactly surprise me.
37 – Both of my highschools were like that. My class in 9th grade was only 9 people including me.
38 – I feel your pain. This is why Muse Academy should be a real school!
39 – Yes, but still…
Graduation will be fun. *sigh*
40 – Yeah, I know, that doesn’t get you out of being teased.
39- I wish that Muse Academy was real too. It would be AWESOME!!!!!
Muse should get billions of dollars in funding and then all the MBers should band together and build Muse Academy. Or use a cool old mansion for a school building.
Now THAT, my friends, would ROCK.
MA exists solely in my dreams.
WE NEED TO CHANGE THAT.
44- YES! WE MUST BAND TOGETHER!
44 – Hear, hear! If my animating business ever takes off, I’d be glad to help fund it. Not to mention actually work there–now there’s a fun job.
YES!!!! REVOLUTION!!!!!
Speaking of which, I believe I may have helped the cause of Mostly Harmless. One of the girls at my school asked me to draw an animal for her. I drew a wung and wrote “Support the Kokonspiracy” below it. When she asked, I said “Google Kokonspiracy and you’ll understand.” One step closer to the establishment of Muse Academy.
Oh, and by the way… what on earth is “graduation practice” for?
44- *cheers*
48- oddly, that does not get to the real thread.
44- YES!
50- I’ll put it there. And now I know you’re not Alice, Kokonilly, Beatlesrockr or Groundhog22.
just found out the speaker this year is josh radnor from how i met your mother. i remember lamuth talking about him freshman year…he might’ve been the one that did the creative project about her and tatman, i don’t remember. anyway, he should be pretty good.
there are so many famous/semi-famous people that come from here, it’s a bit frightening
mm. I’m looking forward to college. Today I sent out the thing saying I will be going to a specific college.
I’m SERIOUS. Mostly Harmless should have an official website.
It should…
I wish we had MA…
*Is wistful*
53- From where? Your hometown?
48 – Well, at my school we have to practice singing. (They make us sing at graduation.) And we have to make sure we don’t move a foot at the wrong time…
57-indeed
58-we (as in the band) play pomp+circumstance. wewtz. it’s not that fun.
59 – I played Pomp and Circumstance and The Star-Spangled Banner on trumpet at eighth grade graduations in 5th and 6th grade. (In 7th grade, the band rehearsals were during Bee Week.) I won’t be this year, because I’m graduating. I’ve learned that The Star-Spangled Banner has a great 1st trumpet part and a lousy 2nd trumpet part. (I’ve played both.)
60-yeah, on the banner we don’t bother with the 2nd part, we just all play first. johnson’s not too happy about it but that’s what we do. the 2nd part is lame.
so who else does a big graduation project? i know PP was talking about it on the random thread.
at our school, senior project is optional, but most people do it. you can do just about anything you want, as long as you work with a professional of some kind and do your report/poster/whatever. there’s a big thing in the cafeteria after school after its over for everybody to go look at the projects and be like “ooh, ahh”. a lot of people shadow people or do a student teaching/intern type of thing. you have to get a teacher to approve/sponsor your project and then you can do whatever. it lasts about a month, starting right after the AP tests.
i’ll probably do it, but i have no idea what i’ll be doing yet.
other conversation topic, how is senior tag going for everyone? there was an intense debate in the library today about whether it was legal to tag somebody while clocked in before they sent out the notice or not. josh tagged somebody (forget who) while she was clocked in at work, but she was on the way to the bathroom (she worked at the mall and her store didn’t have a bathroom). about an hour later they sent out a notice saying if you were clocked in you were safe, but josh didn’t think this was a rule before, so he said it didn’t apply in this case.
yeah. it can be pretty intense. a lot of people camp out. taylor actually got tagged when she was stopped at a red light, some people were tailing her and they jumped out of their car, opened her car door and shot her. it’s probably the most interesting tag i’ve heard so far.
hemmel said back when he played they camped out on the roof of some girl’s house like all night, and it was right outside her brother’s window so they were up all night talking to him and he was bringing them food and her parents came up to see if they needed anything.
apparently nobody in the house warned her because she walked out the door the next morning to go to work and got soaked. hemmel said his friend chad nearly fell off the roof because he was so excited about shooting her.
