    1- Yep.

I’m dealing with three computers at the moment. One shuts down on you without warning if you use anything that requires flash. Or if you breathe too hard near it. One shuts down on you if you have too many windows open. And one doesn’t shut down on you, but it runs slower than molasses in January uphill.

That rant out of the way, I am also working as the computers counselor in a day camp near me! I get a whole roomful of computers to fiddle around with!

I recently got a decent secondhand Dell laptop. It runs great, but there is no disc drive and it can’t connect to the internet, so I can only use it for Microsoft Word and for file storage. For internet I have to use the family computer. It’s an eMachine. NEVER NEVER NEVER BUY AN EMACHINE! It’s running now, but if I add any new programs to it, it will die because supposedly it has less memory than my iPod! I would love a newer computer, but for now I’m just grateful to have reliable internet access at a reasonable speed.

Yesterday when I started up the computer and clicked on the Firefox icon it said that I could either continue with its current version or I could download the new one. Being a procrastinator, I clicked on “do it later” and it informed me that the next time I started Firefox it would download the new version. All fine and dandy.
Untill I realize that there was no address bar, and the other missing components. So, I closed it, opened it again, had it do its little thing about downloading, and……no difference. It is still missing the address bar.

The cover of the “down” arrow key on my laptop keyboard popped off, and now the little blue silicon button under it is exposed…
and I was clicking the blue button, when it popped off! It still works if I place it on top of the microchip-sensor thing (or I can just press the sensor… but I would rather not…), but it is an incredible pain. Bother bother bother. I cannot live without my down arrow key :(

102- Can you bring it somewhere to get it fixed? If it’s a PC, you could bring it just about anywhere that sells PCs. But if it’s a Mac, you’ll probably have to figure out how to mail it back to the company, wait a while, and hope it gets back without any additional damage.

PCs are just so much easier.

Hmmm. my dear silver compy has been acting strange lately. It’s been falling asleep a lot more readily and waking up much less happily. I’m a little concerned, since I love, love, love having a computer (this is our only one) and I’m not sure if the lovely parents would get a new one if this one died. Well, they probably would, since mom has become alarmingly enamored of Amazon…… she wants a Mac. I’ve never really used one for more than a few minutes (at friend’s houses, but never for anything other than quick internet searches or MuseBlogging)…..I dunno though, I’ve heard from a lot of friends that have them that they really like them.

I like my iPod, if that’s any indication, but iTunes is PAINFULLY slow. It’s like peeling off sunburnt skin in long strips to get it to open. *dies a slow and painful death*

107- I just think Apple is too reluctant to make their software work on Windows. I mean, people who use Macs are pretty dependent on Microsoft software, e.g. Office, etc.

106- Are you going to get Windows 7 when it’s officially released? I hope to, but it may be too expensive. And I don’t want to go through the process of installing a new OS.

108 – I think that’s because the internal workings of Apple software differs greatly from Windows software. And programs for fun stuff on Mac are much better than that on Windows. Personally, I just like Macs more than PCs.

On a completely different note, anybody here know the “palette swap” trick on Macs? Just hold down the ctrl, option, and apple/command keys and press 8. Every color instantly switches to its palette opposite.

Yeah, this thread is a goner.

Soooo. I’m going to get a new computer soon. It’s going to be a mac. It’s going to be a 13″. But is it going to be a MacBook Pro, or just the MacBook? I’m paying for it (because Mom doesn’t want me to get one and ruin it, so if I pay for it myself I’ll be more responsible. Because everyone knows I mess up computers and am irresponsible. )
I very much want to MacBook Pro, mom’s got the 17″ (it’s what I use most often), but if I’m paying for it…..200 bucks difference is a lot, and it’s money I want to use for other things as well.
So. This is a question for anyone who has a macbook pro or a macbook, (mostly those of you who have a macbook); is it worth the extra? I’m leaning heavily towards to pro, I really like the aluminum body and the screen and backlit keyboard…..but my wallet hurts just thinking about it.
So, is the macbook good enough? Durable? Work well? Satisfactory?
Opinions? (And Mac haters, shut up. I’ll admit Macs have their downfalls, but overall I’m a total convert.)

Yay for getting a new computer! I’d definitely recommend the macbook. I have one, and I have been very happy with it! The macbook pro does look cool with the aluminum and whatnot, plus a few extra features, but the macbook has a lot to offer. It is cheaper, and with the money you save, you can pay to have a larger hard drive and more memory, which makes it run faster. Mine is very sturdy (though I haven’t tried throwing it on the floor or anything like that! ;) ), and apparently the newer model has a unibody, which is supposed to be even more durable. Oh, and as for the backlit keys: I haven’t been sorry not to have them. It seems like a nifty feature, but I don’t look at the keyboard much when I type (MuseBlogging has greatly improved my typing! :P ) and the screen semi-illuminates the keys.

We’ll have to kokonvene, and then you can try one out! :D

I’m guessing not much major, but if you know some things the Pro has the MacBook doesn’t (I’m too lazy/busy to research), I could possibly tell you if I find them useful to have (or if I don’t even use them at all).

I really do not know that much about different computer types, beyond the difference between a Mac and a PC. My laptop is a PC, and its rather clunky, because my parents and grandparents picked it out. (Note to self: when I get a new computer, actually be involved in picking it out. Especially since my dad said I could get a mac if I wanted one when I head off to college.) However, I still love this computer, and it is far superior to the computer that I used to use, which is the only computer in the house which is not a laptop. That one is painfully slow, and gets viruses so easily. My younger sibling are the only ones who use it on a regular basis. I only use it when I need to print something out.

I just “inherited” my family’s old laptop to use as my own. It’s a PC, and rather old, but it still works fine and I honestly don’t need it for much more than using it for Microsoft Word docs and going on e-mail/MB. If the opportunity comes up, and I do get a chance to buy a better computer, I will, but for now this one is fine. I do have to share with my sister though…. oh, well. She doesn’t use the computer much anyway.

And my dad has his own work computer, which I rarely can go on, but it does have all my files with my pictures on it and it’s better, bigger, and faster than this one.

    Ooh, shiny thread.
You probably don’t want to hear about all my family’s computers. A couple of them are older than me, three more are about my age, and with one exception, the rest are at least four years old. My mom’s got a shiny 24” Mac, (All of our computers are Macs. Dad very nearly refuses to let anything else in the house, so I don’t think anybody in the family functions well on Windows.) which we got in October, I think.
And I have my amazing wonderful iBook G4 from about 2004, (That was six years ago? I was thinking it was four years.) which is somewhat slow and occasionally has a few problems, but is overall amazing and highly useful, etc. It has a name. Elwing, which means Star Spray in elvish. Elwing is white, so I thought it was appropriate.

I can mostly type by touch too, and I’ve certainly survived without them on the Toshiba battleaxe that’s mine.

Are the screens the same on them now? I know that some of the older MacBooks I’ve seen had a different screen that might be harder to see in the sun. Hmm.
I still really like the aluminum body though……urg. I guess I’ll look at them in the store, I haven’t seen the new MacBooks. *sigh*

You mean the whole anti-glare screen? I’m not sure if that’s available for regular MacBooks. 121. Midnight Fiddler says:

120.1~ I don’t know about anti-glare…..it’s just that the screen on mom’s MacBook Pro is glassier than, say, the screen on my ancient PC, and if I recall correctly the MacBook’s I’ve seen had the latter type of screen. I don’t know how to describe it, other than it’s kind of a matte finish, and hard to see from some angles. Whereas this (the MacBook Pro I’m on now) has a shinier screen that’s clearer and easier to see. Meh, I don’t know.

I was talking to dad about it and he’s like “You’re even considering getting the plastic one? Go for the metal body. Definitely. We’ll pay you back for it in the fall when you start school, so get the best you can.”
Because Mom’s convinced I’m going to demolish it, and won’t pay for it until I’ve demonstrated that I can take care of my things. :eyeroll:

I for one am greatly excited to revive this thread. (or perhaps a new thread would be in order?)

I searched for a thread like this because I have a lot of feelings about smartphones
which is to say, I want a high-end Android device that doesn’t have a five inch screen. My current phone has a screen between three and four inches in size, and from that I’m extrapolating that a four inch screen is the largest that has any hope of fitting in my pockets. The Droid Incredible 4G is the only Verizon smartphone that is four inches across and runs Android 4.0 or better. And I am reluctant to get it because a) I’d lose unlimited data, despite being grandfathered in (dear Verizon: that is not how grandfathering works.) and b) if I am getting a new phone I want the best hardware, not something midrange that might be okay and c) they’re probably never going to update it to Jellybean, so I might as well wait until Jellybean or Key Lime Pie phones come out (and I have no clue when that will be, not soon though.)

Also, was everyone else but me aware that the netbook is dead? I thought they were still alive and well and then someone told me they were over as a fad. So I went to Lenovo’s website to look at the upgrade to the model I had in high school and it was described as being for K-12 education. When did this happen?? I got mine in 2011, it is now 2012???
I’m hoping ultraportables are still in because I absolutely love my 12.5″ ThinkPad X220 and someday I’d like to replace it with something just as nice. (not until I finish school though most likely).

I think that for the most part netbooks have been replaced by tablets (and, to an extent, smartphones), though the “Ultrabooks” Intel is pushing are somewhat similar, and obviously Chromebooks as well, though those never really hit it big like Google was hoping. Microsoft Surface is an interesting hybrid too, and while I doubt it’ll do great commercially, it does introduce some new ideas.

Also, I don’t see why the Microsoft Surface is different from any other tablet+keyboard (for example, Asus Transformer), except it’s much more expensive? ($600 for a Surface tablet, I’m seeing around $300 for the Transformer)

related: whatever happened to Ubuntu for Android? There was so much promise! I would buy an Ubuntu phone even if it was 4.8″ (although not above 5″ — I’m looking at you, Galaxy Note.)

    I have a question.

I downloaded a PDF reader, making sure not to install any files I could actually avoid installing. It works pretty well, but something it didn’t allow me to prevent it from installing was something that apparently makes my computer go to a certain website every time I open a new, empty tab. I went through my browser tools (I have Firefox), and couldn’t seem to fix it. Before, it would open a non-website page with the last several sites I had visited listed on it. Does anyone know how I can get it to change back? (I deleted the folder associated with the page it now opens to.)

      1. If you are on Windows/Mac I would only use the official Adobe PDF reader, unless you hear from a trusted source that another is better. cnet, a technology reviews website, is an example of a trusted source. Someone on tumblr is not. If you are on Linux, only use a PDF reader from the repositories.

      2. In my Firefox: “Firefox” menu > Options > Options. In the dialog box that appears: General > Home Page. I have an extension called Tab Mix Plus installed which changes the session manager prompt (aka the one with the last several sites visited listed), so can’t help beyond that with specific directions.

      3. Please run a virus scan. Microsoft Security Essentials(win XP or 7) or Windows Defender (in win8) or Malwarebytes should be a reliable scanner.
