    YAY, MOVIES!

So, I saw Wall-E the other day. Whoever made up the marketing campaign for the movie is brilliant. Everyone knew about it 6 months before it came out.

    WALL-E SPOILER WARNING.
Contrary to what other people have said, I liked the way that the humans were portrayed. They had clearly gotten themselves into a bad situation, as humans tend to do, but a small, commited group lead the rebuilding of Earth. And I thought that was pretty cool.

Oh, and the credits were awesome.
    END SPOILER.

    First post?

Sorry for the probable double post, but the comments box was shrinking and making it hard to see what I was typing.

So, I also liked Wall-E, but I couldn’t stop wondering about what was going to happen to the humans. Will they be able to get enough food? Will they be all right through the winter? What will they do to fix the earth? Do they know how to use technology like radios and television, or don’t they care?
Yes, I did think about all of that. Am I the only one who wondered how the humans will fare on their new planet? After all, they’ve never seen earth before. Okay, you can ignore that if you want.

Wall-E was really though-provoking. For some reason it left me kind of uncomfortable, though. I mean, it was cute and all, but it was like underneath there was something…bad, or just off. I dunno. I got the same feeling about Bug’s Life and Madagascar, so don’t pay any attention to me, I think I’m just weird like that.

By the by, I just saw Batman Begins, and may I just say it was COMPLETELY AWESOME!!!!!!! Christian Bale rocks my socks. *hearts* Did you know he did the voice for Howl In Howl’s Moving Castle?

    WALL-E SPOILER.

28- Ohmygosh! I get that feeling too! Watching the trailers for Wall-E made me uncomfortable, like you just said.

RE: Staying through the credits: I like to do that, because a) I like the music (sometimes) and b) sometimes there are things at the end of them that I would miss otherwise. Plus I just like the dark theater. But last time I stayed through the credits (what movie was that? Can’t remember) my sister got bored and started hitting me and biting me and the like.

22 – The credits rocked. I liked how they had all the different art styles.

24 – Yeah, we always stay through the credits. And this time there was the Buy&Large logo at the very end, so we thought there was going to be a mini-cartoon or something.

I love the little cleaning robot. He’s so adorable! ^^

55–Totally agree. I saw John Williams conduct down at the Hollywood Bowl, he’s the best thing since sliced bread.

The original Star Wars were amazing. The new ones not so much. Hayden Christiansen makes a good evil Anakin, and Natalie Portman is a pretty Padme, but they’re waaaay too wooden–although maybe that was the best they could do with the lines they were given, those were even worse. “Ani, you’re breaking my heart!” Gaaaahhhh it’s like fingernails on a blackboard! Even I could have written a better line than THAT!
And don’t get me STARTED on Jar-Jar. I’m amazed George Lucas didn’t get sued for that character. Bleeeaaaah.

    85~ Yes, I did.
87~ Ratlines: You know what shrouds are, right? If not, let me refresh your memory. Shrouds are standing rigging. Standing rigging stays in the same place all of the and is only moved for adjustments. Because of this it is often tarred to protect it from the weather (this is where calling sailors “tars” come from, they would often have tar on their clothes and body from working with and around these lines).
Shrouds hold up the mast from an athwartships direction. (side to side, whereas stays and backstays hold up the mast from fore and aft, or longways.)
Here’s where we get to ratlines; ratlines are small pieces or rope tied in between the shrouds to form a ladder for crew to climb aloft.
    My rant about ratlines was:
Ratlines are made of small rope, and sometimes break. Because if this, one of the first things one learns before going aloft is to NEVER HOLD ONTO THE RATLINES WITH YOUR HANDS WHEN CLIMBING. Always hold the shrouds. They are much stronger and of a ratline breaks under your feet, you can still hold on with much more assurance of not plunging to the deck or water below, due o your firm hold on the shroud.
Now, in the Hornblower movies, the actors do not adhere to this simple rule, but frolic aloft and hold on the the ratline with their hands. This scares me to death, and my anting is purely for the safety of the actors. ;)
Also, in a few scenes the ratlines aren’t tarred, and look quite fuzzy, which is disconcerting.

Forgive the information overload, I hope I didn’t get too boring!

Alice, some recommended reading for you: Pirates and Patriots of the American revolution from the Illustrated Living History Series is a good introduction to 18th century tall ships, and related topics, with good illustrations. I often use it as a quick reference to see if I’m remembering something correctly.
the Arts of the Sailor by Harvey Garrett Smith is also good, it has a lot of information on various sailing skills for all sorts of ships.
Seamanship in the Age of Sail is an amazing treasure trove of information as well, and highly recommended for a reference and a good read.
I hope you can find some of these, or check them out from the library, I think you’d enjoy them!

Eh, it wasn’t that bad. I like the young Tom Riddle actor they chose. The only things I don’t like are the fact that the memories were pretty much just water in the pensieve, and Dumbledore’s hair wasn’t auburn. Way to stick to canon, WB. Other than that, the trailer really wasn’t that bad, unless you were expecting more of the Trio, or such. Really, though, I like Tom much better than Harry. His blue eyes frustrate me.

Has anyone seen A Series of Unfortunate Events? They got EVERYTHING wrong! The Marvelous Marriage took place while the Baudelaires were still in Count Olaf’s care, not after Aunt Josephine died! In the book, everyone thought that the Mamba du Mal snake killed Uncle Monty, and the Baudelaires disproved it by reading about the Mamba Du Mal and explaining why it couldn’t have killed him, then finding suspicious objects in Count Olaf’s suitcase. In the movie, everyone thought that the Incredibly Deadly Viper killed him, and the Baudelaires disproved it by showing them that the IDV was harmless. The whole thing with the spyglasses, plus the train scene, were completely made up, and Count Olaf was never captured by the authorities. Finally, in the Marvelous Marriage scene, Klaus didn’t climb the tower – Violet had done that earlier – and they foiled Count Olaf’s evil plan by Violet signing the marriage document with her left hand, not by burning up the document with a giant lens.

*ahem* TWILIGHT PLOTLINE: Twilight is a book about a girl named Bella who moves from sunny Phoenix, AZ to rainy and dismal Forks, WA. She thinks nothing good will come out of her predicament, until she meets the Cullens. Five children, all 16-19, all stunningly beautiful, all super smart and super rich. They’re all together (Alice and Jasper, Rosalie and Emmett), except for the youngest, Edward. She incidentally becomes his lab partner, and she notices he is acting strange. He won’t talk to her, and he seems to be begging the school to switch his bio time to another period. She is hurt and upset and doesn’t understand, until one day he begins talking to her. He saves her from being hit by a car, and she doesn’t understand how he does this, because he stops it with his body. She has also noticed that his skin is pale white and ice cold, he’s devastatingly beautiful, his eyes change color with his mood, and he’s amazingly strong and fast. They talk, and he tells her that he’s a vampire. They fall deeply in love, but it’s riddled with conflict and desperation because he, being a vampire, has a powerful instinctual urge to drink her blood. I won’t give away anything else. You know what I don’t get? Like, all of the good romantic comedies have Tom Hanks in them. I’m not dissing Tom Hanks, I love him, and he’s a great actor and everything, but I don’t understand why he’s pictured as the ‘knight in shining armour’. He’s not even that handsome! I saw The Boy in the Striped Pajamas last night, and I think I’ve lost most of my faith in humanity. I knew about the Holocaust already, of course, and I’d been to Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) services and seen photos, but it’s never seemed so real before.
There were mostly two things that crossed my mind as I was watching the movie. The first was that I had no idea what I’d do if it were my father running the concentration camps. Like Bruno, I’d want to trust him and believe that he was doing the right thing, but I really hope I’d also be able to see through the propaganda and the pressure of the Nazis and understand that Jews were actually people and that there was a genocide being commited. I hope I’d be able to stand up and do something, I hope I wouldn’t be too scared or too brainwashed, but I don’t know if I would. I tend to believe what people tell me, especially my parents. Would I have lied to myself if I knew what was going on so that I’d be okay with it, like the father in the movie? I’m scared that I wouldn’t have recognized the truth.
The other thing I thought about was that I wouldn’t have had a chance to figure out whether I’d recognize iit or not. That would have been me and my family in those camps and those barracks and those gas chambers. I’d be the one with my father missing if I put a toe out of line, with my grandparents having been sent to the other line to the gas chambers right off the trains. And it’s not just that it would have been me if I’d lived there and then–it nearly was my grandparents. If their families had not gotten out in time, it would have been them. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be stripped of your clothes and your dignity and given prisoners’ rags to wear, worked three-quarters to death, and then shepherded into a shower room and hear a door slammed. That could have been me.

I can’t believe that humans can be so horrible.

And this is something that just occured to me: Why the hell do we have “Patriots Day” for 9/11 (which I’m not saying shouldn’t be commemorated–quite the opposite) as a national holiday in America but no national commemorations of the Holocaust and slavery and so many other things that need to be remembered? We have to remember the terrible parts of history so they won’t repeat themselves.

328- That was such a sad movie. The Holocaust ha haunted me for the majority of my life. I really can’t believe that people can be so cruel. Did you know that in concentration camps, twins would go to evil doctors who would torture and murder one of the twins just to see if the other one could feel it? A girl in my speech class did an informative on the Holocaust, and after she told us that I felt scared for all of the twins in my class. Some of them were scared too, I bet, and afterward the whole room was quiet. I was haunted for nights and nights after that. The shower thing was just too cruel to imagine, and I think it’s horrible that the people killing all those Jews could do it in good conscience. It was a horrible event in history, and I agree that it should never happen again.
