Is Community considered a Geeky TV Show? I’m not sure.
Anyways, it got renewed, and I am extremely happy that it did.
It’s not a geeky TV show, but I’m in the middle of Season 2 of Orange is the New Black right now.
Also, Bibliophile on the last thread- wait, we can make new threads now?
You should be able to. If you’re logged in, you can mouse over “+ New” in the dark gray bar and click “post.” The GAPAs had to give us the ability to do that individually, though, so if you don’t see that option, then that probably means that since you weren’t active when it happened, you’ll need to ask to be able to do it.
Well that’s a change.
And one of my favorite new features is the ability to edit your own comments while logged in!
I just noticed that comment, and considering what I just posted, I’m going to add that I can’t normally do that–only on this thread. I’m guessing it’s to do with age or MuseBlog age or something.
Beats me.. It must be because you created this thread. If it makes you uncomfortable, I can always subtract a few powers.
Oh–I was assuming you made some kind of deliberate decision to let some people do it and not others. If you didn’t, maybe I just don’t know how.
Oxlin, if you’re reading this–how do you edit your comments?
I’d figured I could edit everyone’s comments here because I’d created the thread; I’d thought you were saying “beats me” about oxlin generally being able to do ens own and me not.
Is there any way you can make it so that people don’t automatically get these powers when they make a new thread? If it’s possible, I think it would be a good idea.
As for this thread in particular–no one else has actually said anything so far, but I do think you should probably stop me from seeing people’s email addresses and IP addresses because that is personal information even if I’m not going to do anything with it, and I don’t want people to have to give me their personal information to talk about TV here–especially since someone could do it without looking at all the previous comments, so they might not know that anyone besides you GAPAs would see it.
I know a while back a few people became able to edit other people’s comments, and some people were concerned about that, so I should also probably not be able to do that since it seemed to bother other people. Although I’m not sure it’s really bothering anyone right now and I am probably giving all of this way too much thought.
I personally am kind of bothered by MuseBloggers being able to approve/unapprove comments on threads they make because I feel that could cause problems on Hot Topics, etc. Then again… this is Geeky TV Shows. I guess that’s not really something to worry about in this specific situation, and in the meantime, I know not to make a new Hot Topics thread.
By edit, I mean I can go back into my own comments and change misspellings or add things for more clarity. You should be able to do this with your own too.
Oh, that. Oxlin, in WordPress-speak, technically you’re an Editor. Bibliophile is an Author. She might not have self-editing powers.
Oh. I thought everyone could do that. Nevermind then.
Ooh, question, Biblio. Are your comments on this thread going up without GAPA moderation? ‘Cause I made the current comics thread, and mine there do–when I’m logged in, that is. I expect the powers are even, since I’m also an author, but I thought I’d ask.
So you’re all turning into GAPAs? Hm. They didn’t tell me the plug-in was going to do that. Well, welcome aboard, I guess. The teapot is in the corner, and the Paker lounge is over there on your right. Everything else you can probably find for yourselves.
*Sips tea in responsible and trustworthy manner* Maybe, as more of us are choosing to make threads, we non-GAPAs should say whodunnit in the zero post? That way, everyone can be very clear about what’s what.
No need! I’ll just tell the blog to supply that information.
Yeah, that seems to be happening to me, too.
Oh, I see it now. Wow. That should be useful.
Okay, problem. I can see the email addresses of everyone who’s commenting on this thread–that can’t be good. There’s also a number–I think it might be IP address?
If it’s quicker to reopen comments on the old thread than hide them from me, then maybe that should happen in case people want to talk about Geeky TV shows without me seeing their email address.
Also, it looks like I can approve and unapprove comments on this thread. It’s hard to tell because I know at one point there was an option for us to approve comments generally, and I know someone tried that and it didn’t work, but I accidentally unapproved oxlin’s comment, and I think it worked, although I approved it again right away without checking, so I don’t really know.
It also seems like I can edit people’s comments on this thread. I did test that by adding “then” to my earlier post on this thread, and that worked, so I can probably do it to other people’s comments as well.
Hopefully, there’s a way to fix all this.
Did anybody else see the leaked flash pilot? It’s pretty good.
Anyways. More on topic than my other posts here: Has anyone else seen the show Leverage? I’ve been enjoying it lately.
I’ve seen a couple episodes when they were airing some reruns when I was home at some point. I enjoyed them, but it’s not a show I’m currently following/watching back episodes on.
Yes yes yes I love that show Elliot is my favorite
Yay! I’m currently in season two. Parker is my favorite.
Rosebud – yesyesyes I’ve watched it all now and it’s even more addictive than the first! I loved the character development of the older women we saw little of in season 1. Thanks to the consequences of her acts in the season 1 finale, I find Piper far less annoying now. I don’t even know what to say about Vee or Sister Ingalls.
I watched In the Flesh a couple of days ago in two sittings, and now I’m obsessed with it. I really wish there was a third series; the place it stopped was really abrupt and there is weirdly not an abundance of fanfiction set immediately afterward resolving the unfinished plot arcs. I’m mostly just happy the show exists, though; yesterday (the day after finishing it) was pretty wonderful.
I’m not a huge zombie fan generally, but I love what this show did with the concept and the characters and the worldbuilding.
GUYS I’m about to finish Futurama and now I need a new half-hour long show. (Still working on House… then Top Gear afterward.) Any ideas?
I probably can’t help you unless you like anime and/or cartoons (the kids’ kind, not the Futurama kind). All the other shows I’ve liked have had longer episodes.
Hm, not really into anime (though I guess I haven’t really tried it) and if by cartoons you mean My Little Pony, then sorry, but I’m rejecting it out of hand. Are there actually quality kids’ cartoons out there? I’m somewhat skeptical, considering what my younger sister tells me of modern Disney Channel.
I don’t watch Disney Channel. I do watch MLP but I wasn’t thinking of that specifically (or… anything specifically? I pretty much meant in general, I think).
I’ve definitely seen cartoons that were well-written, though. I mean the thing that immediately comes to mind is Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is one of the best-written shows I’ve seen ever probably. That’s 45 minutes, though. I’m sure I could think of something that was 30 minutes if you want but if you’re not a cartoon person anyway then I’m probably not going to when I don’t really even know what sort of thing you like since I haven’t seen House or Futurama.
Also lots of the shows that I watch are not currently on, so there’s that.
I’ve definitely considered watching Avatar; I’ve heard it’s really good. Unfortunately, though, I don’t think it’s on Netflix. I’m a fan of lots of different shows (i.e. I watch too much TV), like House, House of Cards, Futurama, Arrested Development, Breaking Bad, Top Gear, Chuck, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Parks and Rec, Black Books, etc. etc. (I’ll only embarrass myself if I keep going.)
It’s okay if they’re not currently on; I don’t have access to a TV here anyway. As long as it’s on Netflix.
I love House, Arrested Development and Breaking Bad. My whole family watched Chuck from the first episode.
Have you seen Wilfred, Freaks & Geeks, Bob’s Burgers or The Inbetweeners?
I’ve heard of all of those. Wilfred I’ve been recommended, Bob’s Burgers is high up on my list because of Archer, Freaks & Geeks I know nothing about, and I heard The Inbetweeners was like a better version of some other show? Or a worse version. I can’t really remember. (Probably not a good thing.)
Put Freaks & Geeks higher up on your list. It only ran for one season, so it’s easy to watch. It put James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel on the map. It’s about dorky high school students in the 1980s and it’s wonderful.
It is indeed.
Only 18 episodes and on Netflix? It’s definitely on my list. Unfortunately, though, it’s 44 min long. The hunt continues!
So… I just started Bob’s Burgers. Approximately thirty seconds in, the dad (I’m assuming Bob?) started talking and I went oh my god it’s Archer and my brain is too confused to keep going and dfslkfjsdfskffasd I will persist but this is weird.
Is MythBusters a half-hour or an hour? I don’t remember.
Mythbusters is an hour long, unfortunately. I’m thinking That 70’s Show, because my friends tell me I’m missing out on a lot (and also made fun of me for thinking that The Fonz was from it). Or Bob’s Burgers. Or Archer’s fifth season, which I somehow missed completely.
Sorry about that, then.
Okay, two things. First, WHY DID THEY TAKE MYTHBUSTERS OFF OF NETFLIX?!?!
Also, I love Bob’s Burgers. Unfortunately, I just recently finished the entire series on Netflix, so now I will move on to the internet, and watch the rest of it for free (although probably illegally – is it?)
Anyway…
The IT Crowd is probably half-hour? And it’s all on the free version of Hulu, as is That Mitchell and Webb Look. Mitchell and Webb is definitely half-hour, and I love it to absolute pieces. All of the above also applies to both Miranda and Moone Boy.
Watched the IT Crowd last summer, haha. But I’ll check the other ones out, thanks!
Has anyone seen Orange is the New Black?
Rosebud and Maths Lover mentioned it upthread.
Oops, I seem to have somehow missed that. Thanks!
Korra, anyone? I can agree that it went downhill in the first seasons, but I think Book 3 starts off much better.
A fanfic I read about a year ago (Airbender’s Child. AU. Many Air Nomads survived Sozin’s attacks and Ursa came from one of these enclaves. Zuko is an airbender and ends up with Team Avatar. From there it closely follows the Stations of the Canon where it can, but does so well.) gave me a rather contradictory headcanon, and it doesn’t fit with those fan videos where people try to explain Avatar genetics, but it’s still an interesting plotline.
It looks like we have some interesting villains, though I can’t think what they want unless it’s to somehow end the Avatar cycle? That would be too close to Book 1.
I like the Korra series, but I always make the mistake of watching the first few episodes of a new season and being all excited with the rest of the fandom, but eventually tapering off and becoming too lazy to watch the rest. So far I’m doing alright with Book Three, though.
But in this new season, the voice acting and lines are a bit off. Maybe it’s perfectly fine, I don’t know. Does it seem like that to you?
Other than that, the villains are great, Opal is adorable, and I fangirled over Huan the first time I saw him.
(Also, the squid was accidental. I meant to pie it.)
…Wow, I should check MB more often.
It’s so weird how you can procrastinate (if that’s the right word?) on things you actually like.
I seem to be unobservant in terms of noticing voice acting and suchlike.
I read an interesting criticism on a fan page – that the bending styles in LoK have become quite similar to, um, the martial art fire bending was based on, so they’ve merged too much. Someone else pointed out that you would expect a lot of borrowing of techniques, which I also agree with. Damn you, plot!
Opal is so cute!
On the subject of procrastination: Preach it, dude. I feel ya.
Maybe it was just off in the episodes I watched on YouTube. They did seem sped up, so it could’ve been that.
Huh. I hadn’t noticed. Well, they must be doing something right, because the bending always looks fantastic to me
And how about the episodes being online now? I hope this shift goes well.
So, who’s been watching the new Cosmos? The physics society booked out a lecture theatre and we watched the first two episodes last night. It. Was. Amazing. I can’t words.* Now I just need a decent-sized screen, a copy from wherever it’s legally available right now, and the continued cooperation of my fellow first-year nerds…
*Other than the extremely mature “Star Trek guy! Star Trek guy!” *fangirl flail* when Brannon Braga’s name appeared in the credits.
I saw the first one but was too busy afterwards, I’ve got to get caught up.
I need to as well. I meant to watch it as soon as I heard of it, but I just didn’t get around to it, although I did end up seeing the episode that talked a lot about lead and the age of the earth pretty much by accident, and it was wonderful.
Love Cosmos! I just found out that they put it out on Netflix, so now I can watch it any time! Yay! I’ve only seen about four episodes, though, so there’s a bit more left.
SPOILERS INTO DARKNESS AND WRATH OF KHAN
So. Random thought. I was reading somethng that prompted me to watch the death scene at the end of STID again. And then for some reason I remembered Nu!Spock asking Spock Prime about Khan, and Prime saying something about how they defeated him and great cost. And then I realized, for the first time, why/how Nu!Spock was able to put together from Scotty’s “You’ve gotta come quick” down to Engineering after Kirk sacrified himself, just what was going on. Cuz he jumps up fro the bridge and goes running, somehow magically knowing that Kirk was dying, and all 7 times I’ve seen the movie, especially t he first time, couldn’t quite figure out how he was able to leap to the realization that the Captain was in mortal danger, because how on earth did he figure out that the hsip being safe plus a comm from Scotty=Captain dying from radiation in the warp core.
And then I realized just now (seriously how can I ahve watched it 7 times, and seen WOK twice and not put this together), that it’s obviously because off screen, after saying that they defeated Khan at great cost, Spock Prime elaborated on that further and told Spock that in the Prime universe, he sacrificed himself by dying in the warp core. Which is how he came to the immediate realization, upon being commed by Scotty that Kirk had done that in this universe. I feel silly.
A rare example of Vulcans actually being as smart as they’re supposed to be.
Only 12 regular episodes of Doctor Who this season? and over 50% written by Moffat? I’m becoming increasingly less and less and less excited about the upcoming season. As in I’m looking forward to watching the first episode Saturday about as much as I”m looking forward to the ICU shift I have that evening. That is to say, not excited at all, but rather facing it with an air of resignation.
Moffat’s great with one offs under other writers. As showrunner? Thanks but no thanks. I’m still seething with rage about the series finale of Season 7. And the possible spoiler that may or may not be legit and I desperately hope it isn’t, that I heard at the stupid fan panel I had to attend at the WizCon (I had to attend, or I wouldn’t ahve had a seat for the other panels I wanted to watch) makes me even MORE mad. Ugh.
Peter Capaldi has at least some say in how his Doctor is going to be though, and he’s both a TV writer and a fan of Doctor Who since he was little. And he refused to have Twelve flirt with Clara. So I have hope? Plus even if the Christmas special was a confusing Moffat-fest that skipped 300 years, mostly ignored Clara and used the much-hyped Gallifrey as an extra-lives powerup, they did wrap up Eleven’s “Silence will fall” and “cracks in time” arcs, so Twelve is on a clean slate.
Oh, I don’t think Capaldi will be a bad Doctor. I mean, as much as I disliked Moffat’s run so far, I do like Eleven. It’s the stories and arcs and stuff I”ve not been so keen on. Especially the Clara thing at the end of last season. I’m definitely happy that flirting will be minimal or absent, that’s been getting old. I’m just…not been too happy with where Moffat’s been taking things, and not to be cryptic but if the alleged spoiler I heard is legitimately a spoiler and I understood what was being said correctly I’m going to be even more furious than I was at the end of the last season.
I’m not optimistic. But ont he bright side, if I have extremely low expectations, I can only be pleasantly surprised, rather than let down…..
Oh and look. Strax and MAdame Vastra are back. This season just keeps looking better and better. [/sarcasm]
I am also not thrilled about there being a “special intro scene” that is only in theaters. I get that theaters have special extra stuff for these things, like for the 50th there was a special “making of”, but it’s just rude to take one of the prequels and make it sometihng you have to go see the episode in theaters to watch. Especially given that a) no theater in this state is showing the episode on Saturday, and while there are several theaters in this state showing it on Monday, they are all 2 hours or more away, and I can’t justify a 4 hour roundtrip drive when I have so many exams and other assignments to complete next week. (It’s essentially finals week).
So yeah.
“And he refused to have Twelve flirt with Clara.”
this is so unbelievably heartening
I’m excited about the new Doctor Who just because it’s my first new Doctor? I mean, I’ve watched multiple Doctors, obviously, and I’ve watched regeneration stories — but it’s the first time there’s been a new Doctor while I’ve been a fan, and the first time I’ll be experiencing the new Doctor at the same time as everybody else. It’s weirdly exciting!
I know what you mean. I became a Trekkie after an eighth-grade sort-of-friend saw the 2009 movie and was obsessed with Chris Pine’s Kirk, and I did the equivalent thing for Spock (she also got innocent!Maths Lover into fanfic, specifically slash, specifically what is still my OTP). It was only last year that I got to see a new Star Trek movie in real life, in a theatre, and I’ll still turn up even when it goes the way of the Star Wars prequels.
Uh, Doctor Who. I haven’t seen much of Capaldi except for Pompeii but he seems pretty cool?
I know what you mean too. While I got into Doctor Who earlier in the new series than you did (Eleven was my first real time regen), Waters of Mars was the first episode I saw at the time it aired.
And Maths Lover–ditto on Star Trek, except Into Darkness was my intro to the wonderful world of Star Trek, it was the first movie I saw in the franchise. Not my intro to fanfic/slash though. I lost my innocence in that regard at the young age of fifteen at the height of my Harry Potter fandom. I was pretty naive when it came to the internet and what lurked in the corners, back at that time, lol, so I was pretty confused.
Star Trek, though. Can’t beat canon. t’hy’la. No I’m not a shipper what are you talking about.
Korra finale. Wow, just wow. Season 3 more than makes up for the mediocrity of the previous two. Can someone talk with me about it?
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Both episodes were just amazing. But what really got me was the last couple of minutes. First I was shocked because of Korra, then really happy and nostalgic because of Jinora, and that last moment with Korra made my heart shatter into a million pieces. The feels were overwhelming.

Yes I was tearbending so hard at the very last scenes. Just like Korra, I guess.
The fight scenes were phenomenal, too. And they played the Avatar music with the giant tornado!

[Spoiler Gnome stopped by to help out.]
WHAT did you do to the credits intro. And the music. Seriously. No. I’d only marginally adjusted to the wackiness you through into the credits with 11. I do NOT like what you’ve doen to the credit sequence with 12. It’s way too different from any other credit sequence that has gone before.

I’m….I don’t know. Jury’s still out. Capaldi delivered an amazing performance, totally at odds (in character, not ability wise) with anything I’ve seen from him before (that is to say, completely different than the Roman dude and Frobisher on Torchwood). Freaky to see him channeling 10/11’s quirky chidlike behavior with his older visage. I think I’ll end up liking his Doctor, it’s just still in that weird stage.
Loved the line ‘It’s times like this I miss Amy.” Because heck yeah, she his so much better than Clara the only companion other than Adric I have desperately wished to please just die.
And the conversation between lizard chick at the beginning and Clara? What? Are you trying to talk her into still being nauseatingly flirty with the Doctor despite his regen? Cuz that’s what it sounds like, especially with her comment about not being attracted to young men and liking older men like 12.
And really? I did NOT need to see lizard chick and her way too subservient wife making out (I mean seriously? Why are you staying with the lizard chick when she treats you like a piece of dirt stuck to the bottom of her shoe and insists you continue playing the part of subservient maid even in the privacy of her quarters. I’d rethink that if I were you).
And speaking of the lizard chick’s wife…..What happened to her having been killed in the craptastic season finale of season 7? I did not think that the events got reversed just cuz Clara disseminated herself throughout the timestream in the worst move ever made by Doctor Who showrunners ever and Moffatt, I still wish the most painful of deaths on you for that.
And then “Clara, I am not your boyfriend.” I was like wait, what? Did you just…what? Although I don’t care for the implication afterwards, if I understood the line right, when Clara says “I never htought you were” and the Doctor goes ‘I never said it was your mistake”. Implying that *he* thought he was her boyfriend? Um. No. She thought you were, not you. Anyway.
And the ending. The ending was. I don’t even. I mean. I just stared at my screen and was like “What just happened. What is going on.” Because seriously. I…..don’t even. Who is she? What is she? Is she suppose to be a creeptastic future Clara? Or a River regen? WHich she can’t be, cuz River doesn’t have regens left, she cave them to 11. But. Just. What???????
So. I don’t know. Too soon to say. Also. previews of next week/future weeks. Are those the whatchamacallits whose names i an’t remember from when we meet Toclofane? Also the “Where are we going?” “Into Darkness.” Just makes me think Star Trek everytime, because Into Darkness was hte name of the last movie.
And what was with Moffatt’s incessant patting himself on the back with his repeated references over and over and over and worshipping his previous (and in my opinion, one of his poorest) episode from Ten’s era. I mean, okay, given stuff, probably going to end up being relevant, but….why are you shoving Girl in the Fireplace in our faces? Also. It took me about an hour to place why the robots were suppose to be familiar, probably because I (stupidly, given this is Moffatt) thought it was a Classic Who reference, and despite all the ticking and my thought early in the episode about Girl in the Fireplace, didn’t place it until much later. But before the Doctor. So there’s that.
Any anyway.

ahh I really liked it.
weird things: lizard-lady is weirdly horrible to her wife? I honestly can’t tell if this is inconsistent or if I just don’t remember it from before.
liked: that the Doctor doesn’t know what a bedroom is for, that the Doctor’s eyebrows want to secede, that the Doctor is excited to start blaming the English for things (does he try to blame the English for things often, and people usually look at him funny?). Liked the call from Eleven. Liked the Doctor stealing a horse. Liked the Doctor’s bits about not expecting paradise. Liked that the Doctor wants more round things. Overall I think I’ll really enjoy Capaldi.
Did the Doctor kill robot man? Leaning towards yes.
annoying things: I thought the “how do I remember the robots” bit was pointing towards cybermen. They do function here as reverse cybermen: becoming human rather than making humans become like them. Also, the repetition of the phrase “spare parts” which did remind me of the Big Finish audio story. Revisiting GITF did seem self-indulgent, although I wonder if the Doctor not remembering Madame de Pompadour is setting something up. (Not about MdP herself I don’t think: I think it’s more the amnesia that they’ll be playing with.)
neo-River might be: Iris Wildthyme, the Rani, a female Master (Missy = Mistress?), evil Mary Poppins (my brother’s theory).

ZNZ, in response to your unmodded post
lizard lady has always been a bit horrible to her wife, but worse in this one, I believe. The three of them are all such gross caricatures of what they are suppose to be that I can’t enjoy them at all (I mean I’m sorry. Sontarans are not idiots. Strax being such an idiot is just annoying).
The round things, I’d forgotten the round things. I liked that bit too. And Eleven’s phone call.
And the evil lady at the end, yeah, both Rani, Mary Poppins, and Clara popped into my mind. Rani when I very first saw a dark haired woman in the courtyard. Then the umbrella and her being british, and flinging her arms out, I”m like woah this is like a totally psycho creepy evil Mary Poppins. But her clothing, and the brooch, and her hairstyle, all were screaming she suppose to be some creepy future Clara to me, because the Christmas episode a year ago, when Clara died for the second time, when the evil snowmen and the pond and all of that–when she was wearing those clothes, like the ones she wore briefly in Deep Breath, like the ones the creepy lady was wearing (and I realize they are period clothes, and not necessarily significant, but weren’t Clara’s yesterday and the evil lady’s both green?), and also in that Christmas Special, there was an umbrella. Clara used it to grab the TARDIS stairs when the escaped onto the roof of the place she was a governess.
And hello, Marry Poppin’s evil twin, Mary Poppins was a governess, Clara was a governess, I don’t like where this is going.
If it’s some Clara version I won’t be thrilled at all. If it’s an evil Mary Poppins or Rani (especially Rani), then that’s fine. Awesome even if it’s the Rani popping back up.

I like Strax a lot, possibly because I know less about the Sontarans than you do. He is a one-note joke but I’m not convinced it’s such a bad joke: I admit the bits where he was examining Clara weren’t great, but I laughed out loud at the joke about burning the Doctor with acid.
Mm, I think it’s less likely that it’s Clara than that she’s supposed to function as sort of an evil mirror to Clara, if that makes sense? In the same way that we get villains like the one in God Complex (and sort of in this one) who are meant to be The Same as the Doctor.
I am troubled about the implied insults to Clara for being attracted to Matt Smith? WHAT EVEN, even if Matt Smith weren’t Matt Smith that’s horrifically misogynistic. she has nothing to apologize for, omg. in fact I did like the “I didn’t say it was your fault” because it does suggest that the Doctor accepts some responsibility for the way people see him? even that this new face is a way of being honest about who he is? idk.
Oh! Other things I liked: the bit Capaldi said about the broom felt recognizably Doctorish, and ties in nicely with that good bit near the end about being scared of being a new person. I also liked the whole nonsensey bit about how BIG London is on the ground and how BIG all the people are, because even though it is nonsense it’s a kind of nonsense that’s deeply appealing to me.
(Also: I don’t know how versed you are in DW EU but in one of the novels [which later got an audio adaptation] there’s a planet called Heaven. neo-River doesn’t really seem to resemble any characters that I remember who lived on that planet, but it’s probably worth noting that that’s a thing they might conceivably be going for, especially since Moffat’s borrowed from that novel in the past.)

ZNZ: Clarification: Are you suggesting that I implied insult to Clara for being attracted to Eleven, or that the show did during the conversation between the lizard lady and Clara? At first I thought you meant me, then I thought maybe you actually meant that conversation on the episode, and now I’m just unsure.
What was the bit about the broom again? I don’t remember that right off.
And I hope you’re right with the mysterious evil woman, that she is suppose to be osme sort of parallel to Clara, not an incarnation of
Clara herself. Or even something else entirely not even remotely similar to Clara.
Oh, and in answer to a different post: Yes, yes there is no doubt in my mind that the Doctor pushed the robot. And OMG how gruesome was that, him impaled on Big Ben? When they showed the hat falling, and the camera started panning up, I was like…No. No. Surely they’re not…OMG they did. Bit dark compared to much of New Who.
I’ve read a small number of DW companion novels, but haven’t had the opportunity to ahve any kind of extensive emersion in them.

Luna: no no no no no, I meant that the show implied it in the conversation with lizard-lady and Clara. (and sort of again with the young men in Clara’s subconscious.) I’m sorry, of course I didn’t mean that about you!
(Is it just me or is Marcus Aurelius totally out of nowhere? I get the idea that they’re trying to show she’s got wide interests, but didn’t she tell that little girl last season that she hated history when she was in school? I guess maybe she doesn’t hate it anymore, and I guess the implication was that she likes philosophy, but it seemed odd.)
The thing with the broom was: if you have a broom and you replace the handle and then you replace the brush is it still the same broom? It’s an old metaphor, although I’ve usually heard it about boats. He meant in reference to the robots replacing bits of themselves, but it seemed to have a lot of relevance to his own anxieties about regeneration.
Actually at first I thought she was Tasha Lem, from the Christmas special, but now I’m not so sure. I do think the resemblances to Clara are very intentional, especially the use of the word “boyfriend,” but for now I’m assuming it’s an intentional misdirect.
I think you’re right about the robot, although of course it is the Doctor’s fault either way: driving the robot to suicide is in my mind almost less morally acceptable than killing the robot outright.

ZNZ: No need to apologize. I just wasn’t quite sure, because I know I’ve been vocal about my dislike of Clara, and my dislike of Clara flirting with the Doctor (although i can understand *why* one might do that, the trope was old by the time Rose left). But yeah, that was just a bizarre conversation overall in the episode. I get it’s a bit shallow for Clara, if she actually loved the Doctor (which honestly I don’t believe she did) rather than was just in lust with him/thought he was really super hot, to suddenly no longer want him because he changed appearance (although understandable, too, especially given the fact the face changes come with drastic personality changes), but I didn’t get why they were trying to argue her into remaining crushing and flirtatious on him, when the whole point (okay, not the whole point) of Capaldi was for the flirtation to cease.
Yeah. I was like, wait, what, why are we talking about an old roman guy? Capaldi played an old Roman guy, why are you talking about….oh you’re not talking about the guy from Pompeii. Okay. Still don’t get where the sudden interest in older men is coming from, and why are we throwing out that you’re into older men if the companion flirting with the Doctor thing is stopping like we’ve been promised?
And OMG Twelve flirting with the dinosaur. Twelve flirting with the dinosaur. Loved it.
Wow. I somehow still don’t remember the comment about the broom. Although I did have the line “It’s times like this I miss Amy” running through my head on repeat the entire episode after he said that, so I’m not surprised some bits of the dialogue somehow didn’t enter into my memory banks, lol.
Also woah. It’s scary that I couldn’t even remember what the plot of the Christmas special was at all and who Tasha Lem was without googling….Because the whole episode was kind of leading up to regen, and you’d think I’d at least remember “hey, he regenerated in the Christmas special” and then fill in the rest, but nope. And given I’ve seen the episode twice….that’s even more sad. Or i think i saw it twice.
And while killing the robot is morally ambiguous….and while it’s a bit OOC compared to many of the doctor incarnations….The goods of the many outweigh the needs of the one (the one being either the robot’s “life” or the doctor’s morals), and I can’t really fault him for the choice he made here–unlike the last dinosaur episode where he murdered someone (Dinosaurs on a Spaceship) in cold blood when it was completely not necessary, no matter how much of a not nice guy the character played by Argus Filch was. Morally ambiguous? Yes. The best choice all things considered? Yes.

I didn’t like most of Season 7 but I thought Deep Breath was a promising start to the new season. I like how we’re seeing more of Clara’s character, we know that she’s perky, clever, assertive, and wants to be taken seriously. Instead of putting the Doctor on a pedestal as an omniscient magical hero like Amy does, she wants to be his equal, help him, and know what he knows.
It also seems like Twelve will treat Clara better than Eleven did? In the Clara/Eleven dynamic they were both the shouty hyperactive one which didn’t make for very interesting interactions, and he sometimes did stuff like not telling her about her alternate selves, tricking her into going back home on the TARDIS, and saying she couldn’t fly the TARDIS well because she’s a girl. He even hallucinated about Amy when he regenerated in front of Clara; I don’t think she was ever as close to Eleven as the Ponds were. Twelve seems like he’ll need her to balance out his standoffish alien qualities, I hope for some interesting morality arguments in the future. Clara might really get to shine and character-develop as Twelve’s companion.
Other things: I like the idea of robots rebuilding themselves with human parts, and that they brought back a monster from the RTD era, since Moffat Who often seems disconnected from it. Loved Twelve trying to be threatening by saying the robots’ restaurant would be shut down. We finally saw Jenny and Vastra kiss! I don’t think it really matters whether Twelve pushed the robot leader or he jumped, since convincing him his life is worthless and talking him into suicide isn’t much better …? I like that Clara’s job as a teacher affected how she dealt with the robots, like Martha’s medical knowledge or Donna’s office skills. Now that I’ve seen the idea I realllllllllllllly want Missy to be a regenerated Master.

Some thoughts:
-I think Peter Capaldi is going to be so, so great.
-I really hope we get a little more along the lines of “what I was trying to tell myself when I regenerated into this face.” Is that he needs someone–what he admits to Donna at the end of Fires of Pomeii? Is it that he can’t lose sight of the fact that he should focus on saving at least someone? Is it something else? (I hope it’s something abstract and meaningful and not a hint at a really complex plot point.)
-I think there were too many references to Girl in the Fireplace unless that episode is going to be major this season… and if it is, I’m a little frustrated by that. I wish Moffat would stop setting up grandiose arcs that poorly explain in past details. I do, though, really like when shows have strong continuity. If this’d been more subtle I would’ve loved it. It’s just that as is it makes me a little nervous.
-I LOVE that Clara had more character development this episode. I don’t love that people kept calling her an egomaniac and a control freak. She has a bit of an ego but I’ve never seen her be either of those things, and calling someone an egomaniac is a good way to undercut their self-confidence, and calling someone a control freak is a good way to shame them into giving up control. (It’s also a weak way to portray someone as having those attributes–show us, don’t tell us.)
I should say that I really like Clara, but I also was frustrated in season 7 because I didn’t feel like she was a well-developed-enough character for me to be able to explain why I like her. I could write an essay on why I love Rose or Martha or Donna, or on why I’m pretty neutral on Amy and Rory, or why I have mixed feelings about River, but Clara’s fairly empty. So I was glad to see her getting fleshed out some.
-I like the new Clara/Doctor banter.
-I don’t know how I felt about the Matt Smith scene–fine I guess–but I loved what came immediately after it, the “see me” and the “thank you for calling.” And the getting coffee. This was nice and also reminded me of Rose and Nine at the end of 1×02.
-I liked that Clara was uncomfortable with Twelve. I did. (I also loved that Ten couldn’t see Martha for missing Rose, and that ultimately Martha saw what was happening and got out–that storyline affirmed my strong Ten/Rose feelings and also made me love Martha, who is an enormously strong character. “This is me, getting out.” Favorite moment. So I like when characters don’t line up exactly, or take some time to figure each other out.) But I was frustrated that the others, particularly Vastra, kept treating Clara’s discomfort as a big shortcoming. Clara has had to prove herself already a number of times. She flung herself into the Doctor’s timeline to save him (something that never really made sense–their relationship didn’t seem strong enough and also how did she survive?) and yet she needs to be basically told, now, “If you can’t still love the Doctor, if you only liked him romantically, you don’t deserve him and you need to get out.” Rose was uncomfortable with Nine turning into Ten. Of course she was! So why can’t Clara have time to adjust without it being treated as an enormous failure of character?
-Honestly the plot was kind of confusing and loose.
-The big big positive: CAPALDI. I think I will love Twelve.
-The broom line was quite good too. And the robot suicide/murder thing was disturbing but I think could be an interesting direction.
-I’m very positive about the new doctor and on the whole I enjoyed the episode.
My big frustration:
JENNY AND VASTRA.
First of all, Vastra’s treatment of Jenny is starting to make me very uncomfortable. There are also some explicit comparisons made between their relationship and the Doctor’s with his companions (when Clara asks Jenny about how she’d feel if Vastra changed), and while we’re supposed to conclude that the parallel doesn’t hold up, I at least come away finding some disturbing superiority/inferiority overtones to both relationships. But with the Doctor and companion that’s a different conversation. With Jenny and Vastra it is really just not okay. They’re partners, wives, and we’re being shown that it’s okay for Jenny to be treated as a servant.
Jenny does comment on this, and the show does go out of its way to show the power imbalance. But I think we’re supposed to find it funny rather than upsetting, and that is upsetting.
But mostly what I’m frustrated about about this is their kiss.
It was touted as Doctor Who’s first lesbian kiss! How big and progressive! And people are complaining about it being too exhibitionist. But here’s the thing–Rory and Amy made out on the show. They had multiple kisses. And in Asylum of the Daleks, when they think they’re going to die and they reconcile and kiss at length, it’s treated as an of-course. I mean, you’re with someone you love, you’re going to die, you want your last act to be kissing them. (*I’m aware this parallel doesn’t hold up exactly because of the reconciliation element, but I think it’s close enough to make my point.)
So when Vastra and Jenny are going to die, they… kiss? No. Vastra shares her breath with Jenny. They can’t just kiss. We need a weird, convoluted excuse for them to kiss. It’s arguable that it isn’t even out of desperate romantic sentiment like Amy and Rory’s kiss. I didn’t feel like it was even out of romantic sentiment at all.
As a queer woman, I am insulted by the fact that the show explained away its first lesbian kiss.

Okay. So, what. Is every person who sacrifices their life to benefit the Doctor going to wind up in this super creepy “heaven” with the really scary creepy old Clara/Mary Poppins thing? Because what the actual cake.
And i feel this Danny guy being an ex-soldier is going to become pertinent at some point. And probably in a way that doesn’t bode well for him and Clara having a relationship. I like that she is flirting with someone other than the Doctor, I like the ocompanions ahving relationships with people other than him, whether they bring them along or not, because I’m anti companion-Doctor relationships.
Anyway. I was a bit sketchy on the Dalek antibody blah blah blah thing, but I’ve rationalized it to a point where I think I’m okay with it and it still can mesh with what I feel to be fact about Daleks (what I feel to be fact is that there squishy tentacle things in a machine)
Also. Is anyone else having more difficulty understanding Capaldi due to his accent than they have, say, previous Doctors? Because I dunno. I feel I struggle a lot more with understanding him than I have people on previous Doctor Who episodes or previous BBC shows. It makes for lots of pausing and backing up, lol
I had trouble last week, but this week was better now that I’m more used to it. (I love his accent a lot.)
I think the troubles I’ve been having with understanding what he’s saying are due to poor sound editing rather than his accent, since I’m missing quite a few lines from other characters as well.

OOOH Danny’s adorable, I am ALL ABOUT this.
loved Journey Blue, so glad she lived, annoyed that she’s not going to be a companion, hoping she’ll recur? loved the woman who sacrificed herself; she was awesome. Like Twelve’s attitude towards death, which more than anything is interesting. Wonder if Clara’s line about shooting people and then crying about it had something to do with the Doctor.
Loved “you are a good Dalek” because it could mean both “you would do a good job of being a Dalek” (which is what it meant when it was said to Nine) and “you are a Dalek, but morally good.” Liked that the Doctor’s soul is FULL OF BEAUTY & HATE, omg. Liked the callbacks to One, and the Doctor trying to be not-the-Daleks.
Loved Clara acting as a teacher to the Doctor, and his repeated wonderings why he doesn’t pay her. (“You’re one of my hobbies.”) I liked that she still does a job and stuff (although already I miss live-in companions, BEDROOMS ON THE TARDIS 4EVER). Less keen on the comments about her appearance: it was funny when he mistook her for Strax, but it’s already getting old. Liked it when she slapped him.
It looks now like Missy is collecting people who the Doctor killed (incl. interestingly those who died for him but of their own volition). I don’t know why, though. Maybe to build an army against him? It seems almost that she’s — cleaning up, after him. I saw someone suggest that she was Death; I like that a lot.
It was in the trailer, but: loved that Clara is the Doctor’s carer.
SPOILERS DOCTOR WHO INTO THE DALEK SPOILERS DOCTOR WHO INTO THE DALEK SPOILERS DOCTOR WHO INTO THE DALEK SPOILERS DOCTOR WHO INTO THE DALEK SPOILERS DOCTOR WHO INTO THE DALEK SPOILERS
As of “Into the Dalek” I have two theories for Season 8 that I’m going to look for more clues about in future episodes.
1. Missy is a regenerated Master: People have pointed out it could be short for Mistress. The Master is a perpetual enemy and fan favorite that always comes back, and he hasn’t shown up for a while. Last time we saw him he was pulled back in time to the destruction of Gallifrey, which now was never destroyed but exists in a pocket dimension, so he could be alive. Before Capaldi was announced there was a lot of support for a female Doctor, so a female Master might be a way of introducing viewers to the idea of gender-flipping Time Lords.
2. Danny Pink was a soldier in the humans-vs-Daleks future: Clara pointed out that he and Journey Blue both have colors for last names. Maybe the future soldiers have last names assigned by their squad’s code color? We know that Danny was a soldier, but not where or when. As for how he got to Clara’s time, not many people have time travel technology in the Doctor Who-verse so maybe Missy or the time police Jack Harkness used to work for were involved?

Okay. So. I’m not normally one to notice or care about little goofs in shows that got missed during the editing process, but….
When Clara gets out of the TARDIS at the beginning of the episode, she clearly shuts the TARDIS door behind her. But then in the background of the next scene, before the Doctor draws his spoon to fight Robin Hood, the TARDIS door is ajar again. And then back to closed when the Doctor and Robin Hood are circling each other, about to begin the sword/spoon fight.
And that totally took me out of it. Like, enough so I”m actually pausing the episode to complain about it when normally the only pausing of Doctor Who that occurs, is me pausing it to back up the episode to relisten to what got said because I didn’t catch it the first time.
Wait. Robot things. Only gold of consequence. Gold inactivates cybermen. Are there cybermen in the brewing?
Or not.
Also. Holy cake. If the episode next week is even half as creepy as the trailer, I may get scared (and get nightmares) from the show for the first time. Because that was….*shudder*

noticed that we’re getting a bunch of characters with color names: Danny Pink and Journey Blue last week, and Will Scarlet this time. Is this what we do now instead of body-of-water names? …well, I think it’s funny.
otherwise, some nice things about the nature of fiction (including the reference to Cyrano de Bergerac and his enormous… ego; I know de Bergerac wasn’t fictional, but he’s best known through fiction about him). I liked the interesting acknowledgement that the Doctor is part of the same narrative traditions as Robin Hood. Liked that Clara bosses Robin and the Doctor around. Liked the use of Marian less; the surprise worked, but I wish she’d had a chance to be a character. (Which… Gatiss was never going to do; I suppose it’s done as well as any of us could have expected.) Liked the Doctor’s archery skills!
My mom liked it, and I’m not sure that’s not the most useful measure of Doctor Who that there is.

So. I haven’t started watching tonight’s Doctor Who episode yet, so anything I say right now is based on nothing but the trailer. But. So. it occurred to me while I was driving home from checking on a patient. But. In the trailer and the promo pics, you hear the Doctor saying “don’t turn around”. Unless of course I”m misremembering. And then it hit me why they menacing voice saying things like that sounded so familiar (and it wasn’t the obvious Season 3 Blink parallels) . No. It’s the Satan’s Pit/Impossible Planet. the devil voice saying “don’t turn around” and the mysterious writing on the walls, etc–like in the trailer, where there’s writing (albeit in english) on the walls and stuff. and moffatt is for whatever reason emphasizing past things, like with the clockwork monsters (although that one was his monster and Satan’s Pit wasn’t, so who knows).
But anyway. Those are just my previewing thoughts.
And now I’m going to go begin my viewing shortly……..So anything from here on out in this comment is once viewing has commenced.
So getting settled into bed to watch….beginning to rethink my genius plan of waiting until after dark to watch so that it’d be more terrifying, because i’m managingt o freak myself already. leaping into bed beacause zomg something’s going to grab my ankle (b/c obviously there’s not so much stuff under my bed you’d never fit a person. oh. wait)
So starting now. for reals. i’m going to be disappointed if it doesn’t give me nightmares. despite not wanting nightmares.
Well. That’s comforting. As frequently as I talk out loud to myself. And given that I just said “that’s comforting” outloud. :/
Woah. And just as flash backy. We’re doing the catastrophic going back on time lien thing (like in Father’s Day). Where rose meets Mickey when he’s a kid and he imprints. And now Clara is meeting Danny and he imprints. What.
oh god. the cloister bells. that’s bad. that means the safety zone is breached.
I don’t like it when his creepy episodes have fluffy endings. It’s like Hide. Which I really liked the creeptastic scariness of–and then it was ruined by turning it into a bleeding love story.
And this one. Fantastic creepy terrorness especially when the Doctor opening the door and I start yelling at him not to and then automatically clap my hand over my mouth because talking out loud=talking to *it* and it would’ve been good, to hve the episode jsut reinforce that terror we all have (or I have. I’m afraid of the dark. And I’d forgotten just how strong my terror was even withing the last few years, of hands grabbing ankles when you get out of bed, and I’d wake up at home sometimes needing to pee and have to debate with myself for long periods of time and get the courage up to bolt from bed to go to the bathroom just KNOWING osmething would grab my ankle). So for it to be a cop out saying that there’s not actually anything in the dark, that’s it’s all just imagination, not creepy evolved to hide monster things? I don’t like it.

that was so great, that was so egregious, i’m so glad/furious
(I don’t think it was saying the monsters weren’t real — Danny definitely had a real monster — it’s just that the Doctor was afraid of something that wasn’t there, and it led him accidentally to discover the real thing that exists. or, something — but it did the opposite of invalidating his fear. It’s even possible that there really was something under his bed, and Clara maybe knew it and was just telling him a lie-to-loomlings to make him feel better.)
also: gender reversal of Girl in the Fireplace makes me happy — well, happier than the actual Girl in the Fireplace did.

Not so much anymore, the last time I remember sitting in bed being afraid to put my feet down because I just knew there was something going to grab my ankle (despite the complete lack of space under my bed), was sometime when I was at home, possibly pre-college, and possibly post scary movie watching. But I’ve always been afraid of the dark and afraid of monsters under the bed and afraid of monsters behind closed doors after dark or when i’m home alone and afraid of monsters in the basement.
I’d like to say these were all childhood fears I’ve grown out of, but given the right circumstances they are all very much alive and well. Afraid of monsters under my car waiting to grab my ankles when I jump in after dark is definitely a post starting college and having my own car one.
And in most situations I don’t believe they’re *actual* supernatural monsters lurking, but very much real bad people monsters. Although again, the rational part of my brain does realize that nothng can fit under my bed, but when I”m on a paranoid apartment sweep prior to going to bed when my imagination has gotten carried away, it’s definitely checked (along with the laundry room–including inside the dryer–under my bathroom sink, and in all the closets).
But I’ve never actually had a dream that I can recall where I’ve sat up with my feet on the floor and had my ankle grabbed.
Anywa. I don’t quite get why Clara reached out and grabbed his ankle? I guess I dont’ see why it would ahve been so horrible if he went walking away from his bed, but whatever.
I got the impression they were saying the monsters weren’t real and that Danny’s monster was just another kid scaring the *bleep* out of them.
I actually failed to notice the Girl in the Fireplace connection…..What is with all the girl in the fireplace refeences this season?

mmm actually I think the point is that it doesn’t matter whether the monsters are real? there’s a lot of on-purpose ambiguity in the episode.
I think what they’re saying is: look, sometimes the monsters are real, and sometimes they aren’t, and sometimes it’s impossible to know for sure, but your fear is valid; fear doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human; you will never be alone.
All of which is deeply comforting to me at least, and I think it’s a more useful message for kids watching the show than either “monsters are real” or “monsters aren’t real” would have been. (and a more useful message for the Doctor, haaaahhhh.)
I’m going with your explanation, ZNZ. Nicely done!

sftdp but also: I think Clara wanted to prevent him getting into the TARDIS and meeting himself? that’s all I can figure, and it would make sense, especially since he’d told her earlier in the episode that meeting yourself could be catastrophic.
ATTENTION: The first episode of Legend of Korra Book 4: Balance is now out. I’m not sure why they released it less than two months after Book 3’s conclusion, but it’s there.

Aaugh, and now I have to wait a whole week to get the second episode. Why do they torture us like that?
Probably because it’s on the Internet now and it doesn’t really matter when they release it. But that first episode was awesome and my well-thought out, eloquent, speech-worthy review of it is:
KUVIRA KUVIRA MORE KUVIRA YESSSS
Due to mumblecakenotavailableinyoucountrycakethatmumble it hasn’t made much difference to me. Except now I’m keeping up to date and this is why most of my fandoms are completed series.
I am watching Veronica Mars for the first time. It is an awesome show and I’ve reached the point in the first season where I think I know enough to guess the answers to the season long mystery but there are 8 episodes left and presumably many twists to go. I can’t stop thinking about it. The main character is super sassy and snarky, too.

That episode was exceptional. Legit scary monster, great funnies, ambiguity with Clara, all around awesome. And it felt a lot longer than 45 minutes.

Posted a couple ocmments about the episode….But then the webpage wouldn’t load when I hit comment, so grrrrrrrrrrrr. I need to always copy my posts before I hit submit is the lesson learned, here.
So anyway. Comment one: Has 12 always worn a ring on his left ring finger? Because I don’t recall noticing it before, but at the beginning when he was leaning against the shrunken TARDIS, he was definitely sporting a ring on his left ring finger. And I mean I know the Doctor is technically married, at the very least to River Song, but I just don’t recall ever noticing a ring before. And I feel like generally speaking you only wear a ring on your left ring finger if you’re married? (or if you’re female, if you’re engaged, as well)
And the other comment: Really really really really not keen on this whole Clara lying to Danny thing. Becaus I like Danny. And I like Clara and Danny together, and maybe only just because it means Clara’s not all over the Doctor, but regardless. I like the two of them togethr, and I don’t want Clara to screw it all up. And I feel like if she keeps up this whole lying to him thing, she’s going to. Because lying to your significant other is not okay. And lying to yoru significant other about gallivanting around with another person who you had feelings for before you and your significant other hooked up? So so much more NOT OKAY. Might as well just shove a knife through Danny’s heart and give it a good old twist ((no i’m not bitter and this doesn’t hit home at all what are you talking about)).
Also. Comment that I forgot to include: Anybody else feel like the Doctor’s hair changed throughout the episode? That it was kind of it’s normal “long” slightly floofy hair at the beginning, and then when the TARDIS was in seige mode, it was shorter/more smoothed down/flattened to his skull, and then it foofed out again once the enemy was defeated and they were topside and everyone had just gone for a ride in the TARDIS?

The ring is for Capaldi–basically he’s very devoted to his wife and was afraid that if he took it off during filming it would get lost. So a special prop was made to fit over the ring to make it look more Doctor-y. It most likely has no bearing on the plot.
I like Danny, too! I was hoping he’d tag along in the TARDIS. He’s in the next episode, though! Yay!
And apparently Capaldi got a haircut halfway through filming and they just kept on. It was more noticeable than was probably intended!

The episode seemed to be something of an exploration of the consequences of lying. Clara was lying to the people in the tunnel too, ostensibly to protect them. But then, people doing stuff that’s not OK is what creates drama.
Peter Capaldi’s first major movie role was named Danny. In fact, he’s so indelibly “Danny” in my mind it throws me for a loop when the name is used to refer to Clara’s boyfriend.
LEGEND OF KORRA BOOK 4 SPOILERS LEGEND OF KORRA BOOK 4 SPOILERS LEGEND OF KORRA BOOK 4 SPOILERS. LEGEND OF KORRA CRAZY FAN THEORIES
For the last season, I predicted that the Red Lotus wanted to end the Avatar cycle and turned out to be right. This conflict is more political, and I don’t have a good enough sense of this sort of thing to say how I’d expect to realistically turn out, except “badly”.
Yep, if they look slightly evil then they are:
So… Kuvira looks like a villain who’s done some good but got corrupted by power. The Air Nomads will fight against her, so will Suyin, and perhaps the Fire Nation will interfere. President Raiko will sit around not interfering/doing anything.
Speculation:
Hmm… and whatever Varrick’s doing will involve granting bending powers, or strengthening existing ones. In order of expectedness:
-increasing the range of things existing benders can do
-something else that taps into energy bending
-giving non-benders bending
-increasing existing benders’ power
-allowing some people to bend two elements
And once he’s done using it for evil, the secret will be out in the world and be a change of similar significance to the opening of the spirit portals.
Korra will decide to take her Avatar responsibilities on again and get her full powers back. It will involve reconnecting with Asami and Team Avatar, similar to Aang realising he’s in love with Katara and that he can’t detach from the world. It won’t involve kissing Mako. I hope.
Autocompleting the tropes:
She’ll eventually resolve the conflict with epic bending, but along the way she’ll have to make a decision whether to help the world take a leap forward into the unknown or to simply fix the existing problem. She’ll choose the former path, after tracking down other past avatars in the spirit world.
LEGEND OF KORRA BOOK 4 SPOILERS LEGEND OF KORRA BOOK 4 SPOILERS LEGEND OF KORRA BOOK 4 SPOILERS. LEGEND OF KORRA CRAZY FAN THEORIES
Varrick’s thing will mess with bending powers again? I hope not. It seems pointless with Kuvira already so badass, and we’re done the “change the universe’s rules on bending” thing every season so far.
I was thinking more along the lines that he might be weaponizing spirit energy? Considering what all those vines did to Republic City, with the right kind of bad energy he could render any town that rejects Kuvira completely inhospitable for generations to come. (Am I the only one thinking vines == softer and lighter version of nuclear power/weapons?).
Actually scratch what I said. That’s way cooler.

Danny’s death was really heartbreaking! There were tears in my eyes. How Clara dealt with it was heartbreaking, too! And the Doctor is such a great friend it’s so awesome.
People are theorizing that Clara is pregnant based on her “Three months” sticky notes. I’m really hoping that’s not the case; another pregnant companion would suck.
The Cybermen reveal was legit! I knew they were the villains but legitimately didn’t have any idea where they were going to come from until the Doctor and Dr. Chang stepped into the elevator and their theme played and the 3W symbols on the elevator made their eyes. Which is to say, at the last possible second when all the symbolism was shoved into my face right before they actually were revealed.

Oh, so that’s how you write Doctor Who.
that was a return to form, stunning like nothing I think Doctor Who’s ever done before. It lasted, what, almost two hours of my life? But the episodes seemed about five minutes long each; I can’t think of the last time I was absorbed like that. Cap’s skyrocketing on my Doctor rankings — I think at this point McCoy and Smith are tied for first, but he’s not far behind.
the immediate thing I think of is Pandorica/Big Bang — but it’s a different sort of story now. Bad things happened when Smith was the Doctor but they were never brutal, not like that — or when they were (Osgood’s death reminded me of Rita’s, for example) it was never this bad, never a string of brutalities like this. My brother kept saying “but Rory turned into plastic and he was still okay! why isn’t Danny okay!” but that was a fairytale and Doctor Who isn’t a fairytale anymore.
But there’s still something fairytale about it, isn’t it? I’ve been reading a lot of Grimm lately, so this is possibly a bit skewed, but: Love is a promise; the hero we need isn’t a general with an army but a youngest-of-three idiot who stops by and does what he can; loyalty and love can last beyond death; at the end, the child is saved.
(BRIGADIER SIR ALISTAIR GORDON LETHBRIDGE-STEWART DEFENDER OF EARTH, that was really top-notch)

I agree with ZNZ about returning to form, that was the best Doctor Who finale we’ve had in a while. I really like Missy, she seems creepy and insane and unpredictable enough to be the same character as JohnSimm!Master. And she still sings pop music at inappropriate times!
I definitely didn’t want Danny or Osgood to die, but it’s nice to see Moffat write stories with actual consequences, it makes the whole story seem more real and impactful. I thought it was very poignant and in-character for Danny to resurrect the little boy instead of himself. And I liked the Cyber!Brigadier saving his daughter, it showed that Danny wasn’t the One Most Specialest Human and anyone with enough attachment to their loved ones can resist Cyber-programming. I love when Doctor Who shows the strength of the human race. <3
Also, Twelve is now tied with Ten for my favorite Doctor. Everything he did in this episode showed how flawed yet well meaning he is: being called out by Danny for refusing to get his hands dirty, telling the Mistress he's not always a good man and needs his companions to keep him that way, wanting to kill the Mistress himself so Clara didn't have to be responsible, smashing up the TARDIS when the Mistress lied about Gallifrey, then telling Clara he did find Gallifrey so she wouldn't worry about him.
My reaction throughout the whole episode was simultaneously "nooo my poor baby characters" and "wow this is such good writing", which I think is how a good episode should be. It reminded me a lot of Ten erasing Donna's memory and leaving her house alone, down to the random Titanic/Santa Claus crashing into the TARDIS to end the episode on a lighter note. I hope the Christmas special is good!
GAH TOO MANY DOCTOR WHO SPOILERS I HAVEN’T SEEN SEASON 8 YET!!!
Good thing I didn’t read any of that!
Yeah, this is definitely a page I would recommend avoiding like the plague anytime you are behind on Doctor Who. Because its guarantees to be chock full of spoilers.
Another thing: This isn’t necessarily a geeky TV show, but did anyone hear about how all ten seasons of Friends are coming out on Netfix in January? Yesyesyes I can’t wait! *literally bouncing off the walls – LITERALLY literally, as in not figuratively, but LITERALLY*
Yes, I have heard this — I’m really excited to get an easy-to-watch half-hour-long show. Only 25 episodes of Good Eats are on Netflix, and it’s not exactly a relaxing show to watch between working on assignments because you (or, at least, I) really feel like you have to pay attention and learn something. (Hasn’t stopped me from finishing it off, obviously.)
The fact that Netflix has gotten Friends is promising. I hope Seinfeld’s next!
Over the Garden Wall is an amazing, haunting show and I implore all y’all to watch it. There’re ten episodes, each ten minutes long, and it’s one of the best things I’ve watched in a while.
Random thought about geeky things and fandoms in general:
So my friends were debating what the worst fandom is and I realized that I don’t really hate any fandoms anymore? I was mean about Twilight fans a lot when I was younger. I still don’t like Twilight, but I don’t care much if other people like it as long as they’re nice and respectful and don’t try to force their fandom on everyone. Somebody’s favorite movie can be caking Foodfight and I will support them, because at least they have something to be happy and excited about and I don’t want to ruin that for them. I kind of think bitter and hateful people who would judge someone for the shows they watch are worse than any fandom.
I don’t even use the word “fandom” anymore because of the connotations it’s gathered for me: people passionate about the things they love (which is fine) getting way too worked up over the wrong things (which is not). For example, ship wars and stuff, where everyone sends hate and gets upset or yells. Or the Homestuck fans’ reputation at conventions. While I’ve been very careful to not perpetuate these stereotypes while cosplaying, I know they didn’t crop up without reason, and I feel very self-conscious.
It’s like… I love things, don’t get me wrong- but ‘fandom’ always brings to mind lumping myself under the same umbrella with all these people, who often don’t behave themselves.
The thing is, in all senses of the word I benefit very much from ‘fandom’. I’ve made friends through similar interests; I’ve discovered stories I love; I’ve branched out to try new things; the HS music albums inspired me to start making music.
Either way, you’re completely right: people shouldn’t judge and hate people for liking things.
While “hate” is a strong word, I do admit that I very strongly dislike Twilight for glorifying abusive relationships. I’d be a bit worried about young girls in that fandom, because the whole “stalking == true love”, “your entire life must revolve around your s.o.” and “physical abuse == he just loves you really much” aren’t exactly healthy messages to send to preteens.

So. Korrasami is canon.
I was happily friendshipping them, but slowly their adorable relationship turned into romance, and that’s awesome too!
I wasn’t sure how I felt about the fact that neither of them are surprised about liking girls. In our world it would be annoyingly unrealistic given that literally every other visible relationship is hetero. I know some girls find out by, erm, accidentally testing it *is apparently still jealous of them, sigh* but it’s unlikely that people who’ve seen a lot of things and have been interested in dating for four years wouldn’t have noticed by then. So instead of just admitting that putting any of that in would make the ending clunky, I attempt to explain it in-universe! I don’t think the anthropic principle works here, so here we go.
I’ve got no objection to fictional worlds where Everyone Is Bi. (In my head canon Kyoshi was married to a woman. I don’t know why, my brain just decided it fit without consulting me.) That trope usually makes me think of SF where they have biotech to help that along, but I’m happy to see more of it. I’m pretty sure we don’t even have an academic consensus on why the demographics are what they are, so this will look as ridiculous as old SF when they figure it all out, but it’s kinda plausible.
The alternative is that the demographic proportions are similar to ours, but Korra and Asami just gravitated toward each other because they subconsciously picked up on some common nebulous set of traits associated with liking girls. Or there was an explicit “we’re minorities together” feeling but it was offscreen because it didn’t help defeat the baddies. Look at this crowd!

Yeah, maybe Everyone Is Bi. Or perhaps it’s just no big deal in the Avatarverse? In my headcanon, they all but started dating while Korra was away and kept it under wraps because they had to save the world first so there might’ve been some moments of surprise back then.
I’m really happy about Korrasami. However, I didn’t like the rest of the ending so much because I felt that they butchered Korra’s recovery arc. I really, really wanted to see a mental health/PTSD story where the character recovers at the end. Instead, Korra did not win a single fight the entire season, nor did she negotiate successfully with Kuvira until the latter was already defeated and the only powerful thing she did (deflecting the superweapon) was reckless and could’ve killed all the innocent civilians and the entire main cast. It seems like the message is trauma => you’re broken for life, which I really dislike. Korra used to be so badass…

Regarding Korrasami though: aaaa I could not be happier. Well I mean they could’ve kissed or something but Nickelodeon was barely supporting them as-is so I’m happy with what they did. Mostly I just have feelings about Korrasami, because I shipped it from day one and only this season started wondering if hope wasn’t futile, and I AM SO HAPPY and feel like I WON A THING and I started thinking of 13-year-old me and how much it would have meant to her and all the kids who are currently in her shoes, except they actually GOT the happy queer romance and maybe will be able to skip some of the stuff I’m still recovering from and I cried a little. Ugh, yes, the confrontation with Kuvira was great. One of my favorite things about this show, honestly, is that none of the villains, while wrong in their approach to their goals, have been wrong in their ideology. Amon wanted non-benders to be equally represented, Unalaq wanted everyone to regain their connection to the spirit world (importantly, going against what the first Avatar thought was right), Zaheer wanted tyrannical governments to be dismantled, and Kuvira wanted to unite a country that had been falling into chaos. They all did terrible things while trying to achieve their goals, but those goals were good ones. And when Korra brought each one to justice, she didn’t forget what their original intentions had been. So Republic City got an elected leader, the spirit portals remained open, and the Earth Kingdom with a long history of corrupt leaders finally held elections.
I just have a lot of feelings about moral greyness in kids’ TV and all of those were really well done.
And wow, yes, Korrasami. I also shipped it from day one (never much liked Mako) and the development of the relationship between them not only strengthened their characters but made for a better story. Makorra wasn’t going to work, we all knew that, and their breakup actually made me grow to like Mako a lot more as a character (think his story in Remembrances and how he acknowledged his mistakes).
(Also it fills me with some kind of sadistic glee to see people crying BUT WHAT ABOUT THE HETEROS because they think Bryke betrayed them or something)
I know that the classic Night Gallery series isn’t really a ‘geeky’ show, unless there are creepypasta geeks out there, but I jut wanted to drop in and mention that the Night Gallery episode Silent Snow, Secret Snow is my absolute favorite.
Have you read the original short story by Conrad Aiken?
Watching Star Trek Generations. Went into it with some hesitation, as it’s the last thing with Captain Kirk, but at the same time yay there’s some original series cast.
SPOILERS STAR TREK GENERATIONS SPOILERS STAR TREK GENERATIONS SPOILERS
So I knew that Kirk died/gets stuck in something called the Nexus/is as good as dead/Shatner wrote a book(s) that brings him back. But I didn’t realize it was 5 minutes into the movie. But also, I don’t think that’s the last I will see of him in the movie, because watching Shatner’s World there was a clip/still image of Kirk’s death where he is laying under some rubble with blood dripping from the corner of his mouth, and that was totally absent in the unshown death of Kirk in engineering on the Enterprise.
And now we’re just running around with TNG cast, and the general mediocrity that encompasses the entirety of TNG has been regressed to pure suckage, with Data deciding to shove the emotion chip into his brain and be the most generally obnoxious thing to watch ever, all because he did something he thought was funny but the other didn’t (when it reality, it was TOTALLY funny. Don’t see why they don’t see that. Crusher got what she deserved. She was being an overall [female dog] and laughing her butt off at Worf getting submerged in freezing water; but oh, hey, cake ain’t so funny now that it’s YOU submerged in the freezing water, eh? Hypocritical much? How is Data shoving her in any less funny than Worf getting dropped in? Oh, wait, it’s not. Either neither are funny or both are funny.]
The obnoxiousness of the TNG cast has regressed to season 1 TNG levels. And we’re only a 4th of the way through.
Also, the butterbeer I decided to try ranks as one of the most vilest things I have ever drunk. It is hte most disgustingly sickeningly tooth rottingly sweet thing I think I have ever tasted.
I would again like to reiterate the advantages of seatbelts. Think how many injuries would have been avoided or lessened if they were wearing seatbelts when the saucer crashed on the planet. All the people being catapulted across the bridge and killed/severely injured? hey. a seatbelt would prevent that. While I recognize that in TOS seatbelts were not mainstream, this movie was made in the 90s. They were definitely mainstream then.
So the ribbon looks suspiciously like the cracks in season 5 New Who, when it’s floating around in the sky of the planet Doctor Crazy Eyes is launching the probe from……
Hey they exploded the whole Enterprise. OMG so suspenseful. Oh. Wait. Nevermind. I know Picard gets rescued from the Nexus (why leave Kirk behind you stupid stupid people. If you’re only going to rescue one Captain, you should rescue Kirk not Picard. He’s far superior) and Worf unfortunately winds up on DS9 (that’s a sad sad day for DS9) and they all return later on in future Trek movies. So….yup. No suspense.
So thye *did* rescue Kirk from the Nexus prior to his death. Not he died and then got absorbed/got absorbed as dying. Bit confusing then to me why the vague spoilery things I knew implied that he was currently still trapped in the Nexus, instead of very much out of it and dead dead.
Gonna have to read either some fix-it fic or track down Shatner’s fix-it fic.
Not the greatest movie, but not the worst either. Although Kirk didn’t seem very Kirk-ish to me. Much more Shatner-ish than Kirk. I didn’t feel like I was watching Captain James T Kirk but rather that I was watching Shatner. Especially the bits in the Nexus and after.
Just started Voyager; watched the first 2 part episode, so it’s obviously still quite early. But initial reaction: It’s not as engaging and I don’t have the same interest in the characters as I did after watching the first DS9 episode. One episode of DS9 was enough for me to actually care about/be invested in the characters, and it grew from there. It’s really hit its stride so far in season 3.
Voyager, the first 2 episodes….Not so much. I’m not saying they won’t grow on me, but I just didn’t find myself caring about any of them. And it’s petty, but the actress who plays Janeway has the most grating voice to me, it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard.
She does seem a bit more Kirkian though, than Picard, because while she does seem to have a pretty large stick lodged you know where, it’s not as big as Picard’s. She at least seems to recognize that sometimes Prime Directive needs bent/ignored in order to do what is RIGHT, not just to do what the rules dictate. Picard would do the wrong thing everytime just because the rules told him to.
And I will admit, I was very hesitant entering into Voyager, because between what very few spoilers I knew of for it (next to nothing, except that some of the crew were Maqui/ex-Maquis) and the introduction at the beginning of the episode where they are out chasing down Maquis, I was already pretty turned off. I’m not big on the Maquis episodes, and quite frankly don’t find myself as sympathetic with them as I think the writers intend. So they typically just annoy me.
But SPOILERS STAR TREK VOYAGER CARETAKER SPOILERS STAR TREK VOYAGER CARETAKERS the fact that the end of the second episode ends with them 75+ years away from Starfleet and any charted part of the galaxy, and nowhere near Cardassians (who also typically annoy me so it’s rather odd that I like DS9 at all, much less currently rank it as my second favorite and enjoy it quite a bit) or the Maquis or any of that, has actually made it significantly more intriguing and I’m optimistic that my enjoyment of it will go up. And I mean I am only 2 episodes in, and the first episode of any series generally isn’t as engaging and rarely has you immediately interested in the characters.
So I’m hoping the characters grow on me, and that my aversion to Janeway’s voice lessens. We shall see.
Anyway. Kinda sad I’m back to having to alternate between shows and not just watching episodes of one at a time, now that we’re back to having two airing simultaneously. But since there set in the same time frame, and there were times where TNG plotlines (such as the Maquis) were directly correlated to the current plot lines on DS9, it’s potentially necessary. Less so for however long they stay in an uncharted part of the galaxy (the whole show? I don’t actually know. I pretty much know absolutely nothing what so ever about anything that happens in Voyager, except that we get a very sexualized female borg named 7 of 9 at some point. And that’s pretty much it.)
“I like it. It reminds me of being in my mother’s womb…….I remember being in my mother’s womb.” –Kim
Wait. They’re concerned about energy drain on the ship (to the point that Janeway said she’s gonna have to give up [replicated] coffee), but they’ve got enough energy that it’s no big deal for Paris to be running a holodeck program?
Mild spoilers Into Darkness and SPOILERS ALLIANCE VOYAGER EPISODE SEASON 2
The more Star Trek I watch, the more nods/similarities I note between the 2009 movie/Into Darkness, and previous occurrences on Trek. For instance, although I was rather delayed in the realization, the conference room scene in Into Darkness where Khan shoots up the conference room with all the Starfleet leaders, and the scene at the end of Voyager episode “alliance” where the Trabe open fire from a ship outside the conference room with all the Kazon leaders.
It’s things like this that make me love the new movies even more (whereas many other people I think hate them even more because of these kind of things–maybe it’s because I saw the movies first).
SPOILERS VOYAGER SPOILERS SEASON 2 EPISODE THRESHOLD SPOILERS THRESHOLD VOYAGER SEASON 2 BLAH BLAH BLAH
So. Let me get this straight. Paris and Janeway “evolved” into salamanders and had salamander babies together? This….makes me very uncomfortable. Not as much as that scene in Search for Spock where Saavik helps out Spock with his Pon Farr (oh god oh god oh god brain bleach please), but…..Paris and Janeway should not be getting it on and having babies, even as giant salamanders.
Which brings us to giant salamanders. Really? Really?
And also…..all this bull feces about Prime Directive, interfering in the normal balance of things in this quadrant, blah blah blah, can’t interfere, can’t do anything that might affect anything, but….It’s okay to leave your evolved salamander babies on a planet? Doesn’t that interfere with the natural evolution/order of things in the Delta quadrant? Your salamander babies were not part of the original order of things in the Delta quadrant. Didn’t you just royally screw over the natural evolution of that planet?
That said, I agree with Tuvok (as much as he annoys the ever loving hell out of me) that I look forward to reading Chakotay’s report on the Captain and Paris having salamander babies together.
Also. I think it is safe to say, that about the only thing my good friend and I are probably ever going to agree on in regards to Star Trek is that TOS is the best and that TNG is only mediocre. Because I love DS9 (she hates it) and Voyager, well, Voyager just is falling flat so far. I mean it provides some mindless entertainment, I don’t have a visceral dislike of many of the characters like I do/did in TNG, but….The characters just don’t resonate with me like the DS9 characters. I actually care about the characters on DS9.
Although. Speaking of DS9. While I knew Worf joining the show as a recurring character was imminent……Did they have to make it the flipping Worf show? Not to mention, he is even more obnoxious and irritating than he was on TNG, and he was extremely obnoxious and irritating on that. DS9 was amazing until his ugly Klingon mug showed up and joined the cast. His presence has significantly decreased the caliber of the show. By a very very large margin.
I am not a Worf fan. In case y’all hadn’t figured that out yet in this post, lol.
Okay so this isn’t really geeky but it’s a sunday, I want something trashy, and reality shows aren’t doing it for me. Anyway, decided to give Mozart in the Jungle a try. I blame Robert. So, since he brought it up, you all get to read my reactions:
MOZART IN THE JUNGLE SPOILERS ALTHOUGH I DON’T KNOW WHY YOU WOULD WANT TO WATCH IT ON YOUR OWN SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS.
at least the first episode is free.
-the student is texting during his oboe lesson? why is the teacher not saying anything? that is incredibly rude.
-okay under a minute in and we’ve already got the sex focus
-hi josh bell how much did they have to pay you to get you to do this or did you offer for free?
-carefully unrealistic multicultural and multiage audience
-okay why are they doing the speeches in the middle of the concert?
-wait why is the new conductor standing in the wilderness on a mountain is this a lindsey stirling video or something?
-also he looks like jack sparrow
-“your new conductor”? last time I checked audiences didn’t have conductors
-I hate the conductor-raises-his-arms clatter-up-in-unison thing every film about orchestras seem to do I mean what exactly do they think would make that noise? if you’re beating up your instrument like that every time you put it up you shouldn’t be in an orchestra. Also why does EVERYONE always go into playing position half of them probably aren’t even playing at the beginning
-this is supposed to be a pretty big-time orchestra, why are all the musicians doing other gigs? I mean once you win a job like that you kind of stop freelancing because it’s a pain in the ass and you don’t need to do that any more
-9 minutes in, pretty boring so far. We seem to be supposed to be shocked by classical musicians talking about sex and drinking? Last time I checked we were humans
-also playing pieces in complete darkness isn’t that innovative they’ve done it since at least the ’60s (although usually not symphonies because who wants to make that many people memorize music)
-who has bedsheets made out of sheet music? don’t you spend enough time looking at it during the day?
-“oboists are a rare commodity these days” lol right except not
-okay so they’re smoking a joint off a metronome that’s a huge waste of weed. I do know someone who made a bong out of a crappy violin, it wasn’t very effective
-what the hell is this party game? it’s like spin the bottle combined with drinking game combined with sightreading? I don’t think it would actually work – too much sitting around for everyone else
-the quality of faking playing instruments in this is actually pretty good
-man this is a huge apartment for new york
-hey Beethoven 127 we’re playing this right now
-okay they’re having surprise auditions what the hell is this a middle school orchestra? and it’s just for the music director? where’s the panel? man the union would be all over this so quickly. also you’re in new york, why is everyone taking taxis all the time
-okay so they’re having sex in the auditorium don’t these people have offices
-wait that’s it? where’s the plot?
SPOILERS UP THROUGH VOYAGER EPISODE SEASON 3 THE Q AND THE GREY SPOILERS UP THROUGH THIS EPISODE BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH SPILERS UP THROUGH Q AND THE GREY STAR TREK VOYAGER EPISODE SEASON 3
Uh, hypocrisy much? Janeway just told Q she could never have a baby with someone she didn’t love, much less give the baby up [to the Q]. So. Does that mean she loves Tom Paris? Since they had an entire litter of evolved salamander babies together a season or so back? And, even if she does love him and that part’s not hypocrisy–she gave those salamander babies up, abandoned them right on over to the planet she birthed them on. So if you can have a litter of salamanders with Paris and abandon them entirely, why not have a baby with Q and “abandon” it with its father, hmm? [i mean, no, i would not have Q babies either. Q is nowhere near my list of likeable characters. I mean, he’s just an incredibly subpar rip off of Trelane from TOS. But that’s not the point. Also. I can not erase Janeway and Paris and their salamander babies from my mind no matter how hard i try]
Really not too impressed with Janeway as a captain (not because of any of the aforementioned refusal to mate with Q, just as a general commentary). I mean, she’s better than Worf as a character. But that’s not saying much. A Denebian slime devil beats out Worf. I think I might even dislike Worf more than Tasha Yar. Heck. I’m pretty sure he is far and away the worst main character of all of Star Trek thus far. He was tolerable on TNG. Mainly because all the characters on TNG except Wesley sucked so much that his suckage really didn’t stand out all THAT much. But just how truly awful and annoying and just unlikeable and quite honestly unintelligent and 2 dimensional and annoying a character he was, became readily apparent when he joined DS9 and dropped the caliber of the show several notches (and why, why did thye decide to turn DS9 into the Worf show–every episode he’s in, it’s like they just give him way more total screen time and lines and stuff and ugh). Because his sucky character just stood out and it was clear just how subpar of a character he was when he was surrounded by engaging characters that you like, as opposed to characters you just never could really come to care that much about and were all kind of mediocre (ugh TNG ugh).
And Voyager is just kind of blah. I mean I don’t have the same dislike of the characters as I did with say, TNG, but neither do I find them engaging and care that much about them (like I do DS9). The stories are entertaining, I just find it hard to engage with the characters. Tom Paris is probably the most enjoyable, and that’s probably just for his bad boy charm as much as anything
House of Cards, anyone?
I’m only a third of the way through Season 3 for now but I’m hoping to sure to finish the season soon (knowing me). (In my defence, it was designed for binge-watching – even the creators/actors say so!)
I saw the first episode, and then needed to take a break. How do you binge it? It’s too much! Ugh! Bwaaaa!!
… I’ll keep watching though.
Three episodes to go.
Season 3 finished.
Does anybody else watch Gravity Falls? Because holy cake, the latest episode, I can’t handle this.
AAAAHHHHH I watched like half of season 2 last night and I’m a few episodes away from being caught up I think? Either way that show is ruining my life!
At first I was really skeptical of it because I saw the fans making all sorts of conspiracy theories and I was like,”chill, it’s a kids’ show! just relax! enjoy it!!” but now everything makes so much more sense.
I love it!!!!
Did anyone else watch S5E10 of Game of Thrones?
So. My mom mentioned at dinner that they’ve named the upcoming Star Trek movie and set a date for it. So I’m kinda excited. I knew 2016, but I keep forgetting how soon 2016 is? And I super hope its good. And I plan to try to do like I did with the Doctor Who 50th and know almost nothing about it. As in, I’m planning to not watch any trailers, learn any plot details at all, or really know anything beyond date and name.
So if you share that view, skip the rest of this post. Even though it has minimal spoilers.
So. The movie is apparently coming out July 8. And is called Star Trek Beyond, which kind if sounds like a super lame title, because beyond what?!?! In my day dream world I live in in my head, the movie was goingto be called Star Trek Beyond Antares. Because in my mid that seemed like a great title. So on one had I’m kind of like OMG it’s only one word off from in my head, and finding it funny while disappointed its not the same. And finding it a rather disappointing title because beyond what?
And then apparently they’re redesigning the uniforms. Which I’m not too thrilled by. But I keep reminding myself they were different in almost very one of the first 6 TOS movies, so it’s not like there’s not a precedent, and it looks like from the pic that it might not be a total overhaul like in those movies, just stylizing the emblem different, like a felty patch, in a circle, with not detailing in it denoting track. So I dunno.
So now I’m kind of torn between the desire to be 1000000% surprised when the movie airs, knowing nothing if the plot or anything else, and a desire to devour everything ever about the upcoming movie.
Trying to have low expectations in case it’s bad
WHAT WHAT WHAT EEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Star Trek is one of the things that no matter how horrible the book -> movie adaptations or unplanned sequels or whatever look, they have my undying loyalty. I’ve yet to make it to an opening-night screening for more than one thing ever, but sometime.
Anyone else watching Orphan Black?
Yes! I am!
I am now, belatedly! Just finished episode six and am all teary-eyed.
I mean episode 6 of season 3!
I am. But I’m only partway through Season 2.
Mild spoilers for Star Trek DS9 episode Badda Bing Badda Bang, but the spoilers are ONLY for that ep since it’s a filler ep, and has no bearing on the greater over arching plot of the series, so they’re super insignificant spoilers:
Star Trek DS9, final season, episode 15, Badda Bing Badda Bang–Holy cake, this is it. this is the episode where I learned about [gambling] chips, and footsie. This. Not a TNG episode like I’d thought (even after not seeing a reference to chips once in that episode on the holodeck), it’s this episode. I didn’t realize until halfway through, when they’re walking through their plan, and Miles is accused of stealing Yates’ chips, but it’s this episode. It hit me then, full force, this is it. That bit there, then the one with major Kira playing footsie, were about the only bits that seemed familiar, until right at the end, when Vic is talking to the rest of DS9 crew at the end, right as the holosuite morphs back into his lounge from the mobster casino. That transition seemed familiar. Familiar, but different. Because in my vague memories, it’s TNG crew, not DS9 crew that were in this episode–I distinctly remember Data, Riker, and Picard there at the end, everything else is fuzzy–but I remember the episode being confusing (I may have come into it part way through), and I remember the holodeck morhphing back to normal at the end, but in my memory that was the “normal” holodeck, the holodeck was pretty much always and only a lounge, and the “holo guy” [vic fontaine] was part and parcel with the holodeck, he was like the holodeck equivalent of the hostess at a restaurant, one did not occur without the other. he was always there. But I only just remembered that thought and feeling right at the end of that episode, not once previously did Vic Fontaine seem at all familiar as a character, or did I ever think holy cake wait that’s the holo deck guy, all thoughts and feelings about fontaine have been new and recent, and very much of “oh god can we please just stop with this character already?”
I wonder how many other DS9 episodes I’ve seen of this season and just don’t remember????
And also, I guess this episode for me just clearly illustrates that altered memory thing, where what you think you remember isn’t necessarily true…..
Addendum: I just searched through previous comments, back in February of 2014, when watching episode 1 of TNG, I posted the following blurb: “Also, I just had a flashback to a Next Gen ep I remember seeing. It involved the Holodeck, set to a casino. And somebody stole someone’s chips (and this is when I learned what chips were in a gambling sense….as opposed to like potato chips. I think my parents laughed at me.). And I also learned what footsie was. If these things are not actually in a Next Gen episode I am going to be so disappointed, because it makes for an awesome memory, even if half of it is probably subconsciously manufactured……”
So you had doubts about the memory even back then. Interesting!
I would recommend Dan Harmon’s Rick and Morty to anyone looking to fill the Community-shaped hole in their heart. I know the art style looks like Family Guy and the voice acting is kind of annoying in the first few episodes, but it has some really good twists on sci-fi tropes, hilarious dialogue, and surprisingly serious character development.
And while I’m talking about depressing cartoons, is anyone watching Bojack Horseman on Netflix? It’s about a talking horse who’s a washed-up alcoholic ex-sitcom star trying to get his life together, and combines sad life revelations with clever humor and animal puns.
Well as much as Moffat has historically crapped all over Classic Who, he was…..surprisingly on point, tonight, and showed that he actually has watched Classic Who and maybe, just maybe, has a slight modicum of respect for it. Well, that is, if you ignore SPOILERS DOCTOR WHO SEASON 9 EPISODE MAGICIAN’S APPRENTICE SPOILERS DOCTOR WHO SEASON 9 EPISODE MAGICIAN’S APPRENTICE SPOILERS DOCTOR WHO SEASON 9 EPISODE MAGICIAN’S APPRENTICE SPOILERS DOCTOR WHO SEASON 9 EPISODE MAGICIAN’S APPRENTICE the 50% of the episode that features Missy, because quite frankly, I think I’d rather Strax or the Silurian chick who mistreats her wife, because as much as I hate them, and as much as Strax is a caricature of a Sontaran, at least his mere existence doesn’t crap all over established canon.
So I’m cautiously optimistic. Broke my heart how awful the Doctor felt over not saving Davros as a child, the guilt and shame, and I thought….I thought for sure, that he was going back, was going to save him. And I don’t believe for a second, that the teaser w/ him appearing to exterminate him is true, at all, because he wouldn’t, even at his darkest moment, I don’t think he has it in him.
And as for Clara and Missy: god, one can only hope, but I rather doubt that it will have any permanency, but oh man, it would be right up there w/ Adric’s death and the death of……someone I won’t name…..in Supernatural, that both totally made my day when they occurred. Oh, and the death of a certain someone in TNG, as well, that also got a bit of a cheer from me……

oh PROPER well done. I’m seeing negative reviews but I loved it — straight to my pleasure centers. The scariest I think I’ve ever seen Doctor Who be, too. (Clara trying to make the Doctor understand her, and she can’t make herself be understood and she can’t get out — Dr Who never scares me but that was really good psychological horror, real nightmare stuff. Also reestablishes for the back row that Missy, despite being fun and hilarious and delightful, is also evil and horrible)
I think Twelve is My Doctor — not just because he was the first one I saw be born (though I do think that matters) but because I love the way he’s being written! He’s sharp and abrasive but he’s never cruel or cowardly — and most importantly he recognizes himself as just somebody trying his best, not a god or anything so very special just a sort of well-intentioned everyman writ large, one of billions of hominids doing the best they can.
Destiny is boring. Heroes who choose goodness every day, who make themselves choose goodness? That’s interesting. (It’s the Kamala Khan thing — “good isn’t a thing you are, it’s a thing you do.”)
good jokes — the only other chair on Skaro, “your sewers are revolting,” “you are not a very good Doctor,” SONIC SUNGLASSES
I’ll say more later but I’m super super impressed.

oh so the first time I watched this the one bit that stuck out funny was the bit where he’s freeing Clara and he tells Missy to run away — after watching the scene again though (and whimpering about it some more) I have a reading, I know everybody else probably got this first time but I just wanted to put it here because it made me really happy:
He’s showing mercy to Missy. He’s not saying run away from the Daleks, he knows she’ll be able to run away from the Daleks — he’s saying, “run away from me.” That’s his mercy to her. She hurt his friend, she tried to kill his friend, and the most he’s willing to give her is the chance to get out of his way. Almost as an aside, too — he doesn’t even look at Missy. He’s entirely tenderly focused on Clara and then there’s just this fury he shoots at Missy without even turning his head.
I care a lot.

I won’t have many thoughts till I see part two but for now — I’m so pleased that we’ve [finally] had a Deaf character on Doctor Who! In a position of power, too, and played by a Deaf actor, and saving the day with lipreading, and being praised for her intelligence. Really actually well done. (Though I’m a bit mad that the Doctor FORGOT HOW TO SIGN, what even.)
Other representationy things: It’s the second week this season they’ve killed off a black character in the first scene, and this time it was the only black character in the whole episode, which, UGH. But other than that I appreciated the diversity of the cast this week. I liked the episode a lot, idk!
After a fairly long hiatus due to spending most of my recent Wednesdays off doing house-buying related things, and to having little time on weekends between a full weekend conference and then working the Saturday after that, and then catching up on other TV shows this past weekend……
I finally finished ST: Voyager last night, which while I rank it above TNG, remained mediocre to the end (admittedly, DS9 was a hard act to follow).
And today watched the first 9 episodes of Enterprise, which got off to a really intriguing start in the 2 part series pilot, and then while entertaining has been fairly stagnant development-wise for the subsequent 7 episodes. I think I’d rate it above Voyager, because there’s something heartwarming and engaging about how this is all so NEW to everyone, it’s not old hat, like in all the other Star Trek shows, where they’ve been out exploring space for ages, no big deal, it’s new. And that’s exciting.
The one thing that I don’t like about Enterprise: the theme music. It’s so at odds to all the previous ST theme music, instead of instrumental, we’ve got singing some upbeat song, and my mind rebels everytime the title sequence plays, and the credits at the end, because while it would be perfectly fitting for non-Star Trek, it just seems so wrong for Star Trek, after SO MANY episodes of instrumental only Star Trek themes. I dunno.

I AM DEAD OF DOCTOR WHO
really properly extraordinary. i handflapped especially at “heal yourself” because i’m a parody of myself, also “did you make this human?” but — really overall a perfect ending to her arc, so completely organic. i’m super impressed.
no spoilers
gorgeous horrifying little puzzle-box fairytale, gutsy as hell. absolutely no chance next week is gonna be a worthy follow up.
i was wrong!
I just finished watching Jessica Jones. It’s a really well-made show, very suspenseful, and brilliant. It deals with a lot of very disturbing and possibly triggering content but it’s all executed very well and the subject matter is handled respectfully (I think). It’s also very progressive. Great show. If you can stomach it I highly recommend it.
So, thoughts on Chris Chibnall taking over Doctor Who? I’m honestly kind of nervous about it, because I thought both The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood and Power of Three were really anticlimactic, and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship came off as trying to make a good episode by stuffing a bunch of inherently cool things like dinosaurs, robots, ancient Egypt, etc. into it and hoping it turned out okay. 42 was pretty good though! I hope I can use the new head writer as a jumping-off point to get my stalwart Moffat-hater friends back into the show.
(Also, are the pie and squid buttons not showing up for anyone else?)
R*S: A recent upgrade[sic] took the pie and squid buttons offline — temporarily, I hope.
yeahhh, I’ve been really underwhelmed by everything Chris Chibnall’s done. I’ve enjoyed it all but he’s never wowed me. The main problem is he’s so unambitious. You can accuse Moffat of a lot of things (though personally I’m a fan), but a lack of ambition is not one of them.
It’s especially galling since they’ve had so many good writers on in recent years. Give it to what’s his name, who did the Zygon two-parter. Give it to Sarah Dollard!
he wrote the best episode of fan service ever (kiss kiss bang bang, torchwood) so I’m okay with it
I’ve fallen out with doctor who in recent years but might start watching it again now. It’s true nothing he’s done has been my favorite, but I’m hopeful that this signals a return to the show’s simpler monster-a-week origins
I didn’t dislike Hungry Earth/Cold Blood, but it was just a sleeker, glossier redo of all the Classic Who Silurian episodes, and therefore pretty unoriginal.
Power of Three….well, w/o going and ready a synopsis, did not make enough of an impression on me one way or another for me to say. It was the one with the cubes, yeah?
Dionsaurs on a Spaceschip….ugh. just ugh ugh ugh. That was a painful episode, it was so dull and uninteresting, and just bad. Not the worst episode of the series. But not one I cared for.
42 I liked.
I’m happy to see Moffat leaving, I really don’t like much of what he’s done, and I despise Clara, and I just haven’t been enjoying the recent episodes, overall, as much as I use to, it’s just missing something. And I don’t know if Chibnall will bring that spark back or not. I hope so.
Lizzie–ooooh, I didn’t realize that. Well. That makes me hopeful. I don’t generally notice the writers of individual episodes, I had just at one point glanced back through to see which DW episodes he’d written and was underwhelmed. Mainly due to Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. but that’s promising. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a great episode….
The new companion! Is black! and she’s gorgeous and brave and snarky and I cannot wait.
so: Being Human? (UK, not US.) I’ve just finished the first season and it’s my new favorite thing. I have a secret weakness for paranormal / urban fantasy, and this is exactly the sort of thing I’m always wanting. I wasn’t expecting much because I’ve always found Whithouse’s Dr Who work deeply unimpressive (except for the God Complex) but I’m enjoying this loads.
I’ve spent the past two months watching The X-Files and I’m completely enamored. I love it! It has everything I love: monster-of-the-week stuff, overarching plots, government conspiracies, space aliens, the 90’s, Gillian Anderson, etc etc. The show’s not without its flaws but it’s been consuming my life. Sadly I just finished season 5 and there’s apparently a movie between seasons 5 and 6 and it’s not! on! netflix! so I still haven’t seen it and can’t watch any new episodes.
Does anybody else watch “We Bare Bears”? It’s super-cute and really funny. Also, /monotone/ Ice Bear is best character. /monotone/
New Bojack Horseman season in a week! Anyone who likes depressing life ponderings, media satire, and wacky animal puns should definitely be watching it.
I found a station that broadcasts all the different versions of Star Trek. TOS, TNG, Voyager, Enterprise, and another I forget the name of. All right in a row. Until 12:00. And as someone who has never had prior Star Trek experience besides TOS and TNG, it was very weird.
How many hours did you watch?
It went from about 8:00 in the afternoon until 12:00 at night.
Update; I found out that the station is also going to start airing the animated series.
I’ve discovered Trekkie heaven on Earth.
Watching Andromeda since I’m not ready to start on Star Trek fan-made productions yet. And since I’d seen a small handful of Andromeda episodes as kid (we very briefly, with lots of antennae wiggling and tons of static, with very poor reliability, got whatever broadcast channel it once aired on, for the space of maybe a few months) and liked it and being a Roddenberry brain child as well, decided it was what I wanted to watch next.
And I’ve watched the first 8 episodes (one of which I’m pretty sure I remember watching–episode 5) and I’m really enjoying it, but man it’s intense and depressing and binge watching it is going to be difficult in that sense, because it’s just so….hopeless. So dystopian. Despite the opening voice over going on about hope. But I’m really liking it.
And then of course there is the character Harper, who reminds me SO MUCH of Wash from Firefly (from looks to attitude, to liking of hawaiian shirts, to even once proclaiming “shiny” admittedly in different context than it’s used in Firefly). And I know Andromeda aired first, so really Wash is the one similar to Harper, but the similarity is so totally there and I could almost swear I’m watching Wash at times.
And anyways I lost track of where if anywhere I was going with this, and really need to go to bed since I have to work tomorrow (bye 3 day weekend I miss you already)
I was obsessed with Andromeda back when I started here on MB. I do remember it being funny enough not to be terribly dark, but it was definitely more grim than Star Trek.
Imho I never really got Wash, probably because I saw Harper first and really liked him as a character. Wash seemed like an older, more mature version of Harper, which bugged me. And of course Wash never got as much character development/backstory because his show was murdered! *slams fist on table*
So….the symbol of the Wayists on Andromeda bears a remarkable resemblance to the symbol of the Deathly Hallows…I’d been thinking that for awhile, but now seeing an enlarged version of it in detail in the background of the current episode, makes it that much more apparent.
Sure, the circle is outside the triangle, instead of inside the triangle, but it’s a circle, triangle, and line superimposed….just saying.
Has anybody watched A Young Doctor’s Notebook? It’s a sort of a comedy/psychological horror thing set during the Russian revolution and it’s really wonderful—Dan Radcliffe is the star and it turns out that when none of us were looking started being a genuinely impressive actor. (Not that he wasn’t good in Harry Potter, far from it actually, but this is a much more challenging role and it’s obvious he’s grown up a lot.) You shouldn’t watch it unless you’ve got a high tolerance for medical gore, though, cos it’s very graphic; there’s an amputation scene in the second episode that’s gonna stick with me for a long time.
Ooooh, no I haven’t but that sounds interesting. It must have been on sometime after I stopped following Radcliffe’s work very closely. We’ll see how a human amputation scene does for me…human stuff can be icky. Animals, no prob, I’ve done amputations. People we shall see.
So, uh, that tooth extraction in the first ep….yeah. That’s about what I feel like when I’m pulling teeth. Those bastards don’t like to come out.
Anybody else watching Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix? I remember a lot of us used to read the books back in the day. I’m generally super impressed with their dedication to the source material and addition of new subplots. More specific things I liked!
– The show leans into the cartoonishness of the setting in a funny and charming way, like Count Olaf’s house being a dark dilapidated castle in the middle of a pristine suburb, or how puppet-y it looks whenever Sunny chews on something.
– Neil Patrick Harris’ Count Olaf provides a lot of comic relief, but still comes off as a genuine threat to the kids, especially the way he acts around Violet. I was impressed at how much I hated him considering how much I love NPH.
– We get to see more members of VFD in action! I aspire to be as cute as Jacquelyn and also as involved in dangerous conspiracies as Jacquelyn. Also, kind of a stretch but does anyone think she might be a genderflipped Jacques Snicker? It seems like a suspicious choice of name for a new character.
– The pond Gustav fell into looks a bit like the Hotel Denouement one?
– VIOLET STOPPED COUNT OLAF BY SIGNING THE MARRIAGE DOCUMENT WITH HER LEFT HAND. A DECADE-OLD WRONG HAS BEEN RIGHTED.
– The VFD tunnels!!!! So cool!!!!!!!
– Mega heart eyes for this Lemony Snicket. I feel like I never appreciated what a weird, sad, snarky character he was when I read the books as a child. The Rod Serling-type narrator role fits him perfectly and allows them to put in a bunch of his lines from the books. I also thought it was nice that he mentions being distraught and horrified by the kids’ situation and crying himself to sleep, but it’s treated as a normal reaction to distressing events and not any kind of weak or shameful thing.
– The deliberately anachronistic setting now includes calling the IT people to fix a typewriter and telling time with an hourglass you bought online.
I loved it so much! All the changes they made were so solid—the greater focus on the adults especially, and the updating of the anachronisms, and Charles/Sir being explicitly canon! The one thing I was annoyed about was using the spyglasses instead of the Sebald code in Zombies in the Snow, but I recognize that that’s such a nerdy complaint that I can’t actually make it.
Also—I really like your theory that Jacquelyn is Jacques! It would explain a lot.
I’m glad to hear good reports. I almost started watching tonight but decided to hold off until I’d heard from the experts.
I love this show- I’m starting the Lachrymose arc right now and it’s making me so nostalgic for the books.
Anybody else hear the news about the Good Omens TV adaptation? David Tennant is Crowley!!!!!!!!!
