First post! I think… We should have replacment threads of the same subjects as the old ones that nobody visits anymore. The old ones have subjects that people like to talk about, just nobody posts on them for some reason.
wowee, you press refresh and look what pops up! which one of these is the random thread of january? i have loads of suggestions (loads and loads) but right now i am writing my randomly-spontanious play, which should be ready in about 1 half hour. yes, peoples, i am up this late writing. i was going to bed, and was suddenly overcome with a spontaneous urge to write. rules

4. any riddle-type thing is fine. don’t ask a riddle that is absolutely impossible to answer.

the only problem with this is it depends on peoples knowing some riddles. im still not sure if its the right time for this one, but oh well, there it is.

Newsies is a movie musical that was made in 1992. It’s based off the New York newsboy strike in 1899.
Movie:
The year is 1899. It is before the TV or computer, and right now the newpapers are the only ways to get news. Here is where the newsies come in. They are usually orphans or runaways, or kids that have to support their families. They make money by selling “papes”. Every penny counts. Everyday the boys (in real life there were girls too) line up at newspaper distribution centers and buy papes, then go off to carry the banner, hawking headlines and making a living. Two prominent news papers of the time are the Evening World owned by Joeseph Pulitzer, and the Evening Journal owned by William Hearst. When Pulitzer jacks up the price from 50 cents per 100 papes to 60 cents per 100 papes, the newsies are worried they will lose money. These ragged homeless boys can’t afford that. So they go on strike, protesting the price jack up. The strike is started by the Manhatten newsies, and quickly spreads throughout New York City. It is led by Manhatten newsie Jack Kelly, and his friend David Jacobs, with a lot of great newsies along for the ride, including Spot Conlon, head of the Brooklyn newsies and possibly the greatest newsie in New York. There are also Hattin newsies Racetrack Higgins, Kid Blimk, Mush, Crutchy, Boots, Snitch, and others.
Real life:
July, 1899. Same story with how the Newsies are living. All the papers had jacked up the price for the Spanish-American war, but they had brought it down by July, 7 months after the war. All the newspapers except the World and Journal, that is. So the newsboys go on strike. From the Bronx to Hoboken, newspapers were ripped up, and newsies who insisted on selling the twoforbidden newspapers were beaten up. The strike was led by Kid Blink, and lasted two weeks. In the middle of the strike the newsies held a big rally, with 5000 newsies attending. Many adults who I didn’t really care about praised the newsies, and then some of the newsies spoke, Racetrack Higgins and Kid Blink most noticeably.
In the end, the newsies partly suceeded. The newspaper prices were not lowered, but the newsies were refunded for papers they did not sell. The newsie strike showed that teenagers can make a difference, and showed how vital these poor kids were to the community.
Sorry, bad explanation. If you do some research, it isn’t too hard to find more information on the actual strike. All you need is Google. As for the movie, watch it.
