    W00t, a TLAPD thread!!

Hm, I just posted on the random thread about it, there’s not much else to say…

I wanted to dress up as a pirate and go to school, but I don’t have nearly enough guts for that, so a simple bracelet will have to do. Ah well.

I will, however, talk like a pirate. Obviously.

Arrr, I shall have to dress in me finest pirate garb, me hearties!

    Um. Yeah.
I don’t think pirates even talked like that, or not all of them. They talked with the accent of wherever they came from. I read an article on it once.

    But it’s still a fun holiday. :D

  5. (4) Yes, it’s more of a Talk Like the Popular Misconception of a Pirate Day, but hey, any excuse for talking funny and making people wonder what’s going on, I say.

5- Yarr, what a wonderful new name for this delightful holiday. Much indebted to thee, Lady B, me hearty!

OK, so my pirate vocabulary is extremely limited. I know the following:
Arr (or Argh, Arrrrrr, Arrrgh, etc.)
    Yarr
    Me
    Hearty
    Matey
And of course the various stickings-together of those words.

5–Or perhaps talk like Pirates of the Caribbean day. That’s my point of reference. :)

Arr, I found this yarn on the official “talk like a pirate day” website. Thought you guys might enjoy it.

“Several years ago, I worked for a telemarketing company. My tale of piracy begins in much the same way as yours, in that, for whatever reason, my brother and I began ahoy-ing and avast-ing each other to the fullest extent of our abilities, and for no real reason whatsoever.
“As I’m sure you’ve discovered, once you begin talking like a pirate, it’s really very hard to stop, no matter how inappropriate it may be in various settings. It is due to the addictive nature of the slang that I found myself have-at-ye-ing and me-matey-ing my various associates at work the following day.
“One fine day, Bruce the Brave (my boss) stopped by my cubicle between calls and asked what manner of booty I had brought in today (i.e. what were my sales at). I replied that the seas had been empty and the plundering poor, and that I had but seventy-five doubloons in my ship’s hold. This being a meager sum, he proceeded to call my mother (oddly enough) a scurvy bilge rat. I turned to him to make some comments of my own to the same effect, when the beep in my headset alerted me that I was back on the lines.
“I turned back to my computer screen, but neglected to switch off ‘pirate mode’ and promptly greeted my unsuspecting victim with a “Y’arrrrr, good marnin’ to ye……d’arrrrrrrrrr, crap,” upon which note I hung up. My boss, being the man he is, and it being arguably half his fault, was in hysterics, and I myself was caught up in piratey giggles for some time (piratey giggles sounding thusly: hee hee heeyar, hee heyar, hee hee).”

Tomorrow I be wearin’ me pirate togs ta school, if I don’t turn lilly-livered before I cast off.

5~ Indeed. I now will call it by its new name, thanks to you, Lady B. :D

So mates, how’re ye doin’ this fine evenin’? I figgured I’d stop in for a quick pint and jaw at the M’Blog before a turnin’ inter me hammock fer the night as me watch is over and I’ve not the energy to turn a jig on me fiddle or concertina, nor would the Cap’n ‘preciate it, seein’ as the night ain’t so young anymore.

I’m off, for I sail on the morning tide tomorrow for the East to catch a berth on another ship.

  27. Midnight Fiddler (she of 2 spzdk, 500 PiePoints and 30 Muszey points) says:

23~ Good ter se ye agin, mate!

Aye, I’ve put on me fine sailin’ togs and caused a bit o’ mischief round these here parts this fine day!

I’m a wearin’ me fine striped shirt (red and white and rather loud) and me slops (flared jeans).

[Reverting to ‘normal’ speech for a moment to give you a boring history lesson]
If any of you fine Bloggers happen to be wearing jeans that are “flared” or “bell bottomed” you are, in fact, dressing as a pirate.
The sailors of bygone days wore “slops”- pants that ended just below the knee (as most did then) but instead of being fitted and closed at the leg the were loose and open to allow for easy movement and to roll up for holystoning the deck or working on the ship. Also, if ye happned to fall overboard, they could be filled with air and make a decent life preserver.
As time went by, sailors’ trousers were belled on the bottom to be easy to roll up, walking on wet surfaces, scrubbing the decks, etc.
In time, this became a fashion for land lubbers, becoming known as bellbottoms, going out of fashion and coming back yet again as “flares.”
So, despair not, me hearties, ye’re dressed in fine descendants o’ pirate togs after all!

And there ye have this year’s bit spot o’ piratesque hist’ry!

Oh, and by the way, the post i made on another forum about TLAPD is now a hot topic with several pages!!! YAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

36–Unfortunately, yes, I know the song. It’s “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything”–from the veggie tale movie Jonah. And now I would like to get the song out of my head…… Sorry, no offense, I just don’t really care for veggie tales (most of them aren’t even veggies!) and my sister (who’s a couple years older) absolutely loves them, made me watch Jonah, and insists upon loudly singing/playing songs from her Veggie Tale piano song book…..Yeah. And the song was sung by the three Pirates (who don’t do anything)–one of whom was played by the pickle, Larry.

Wait, what? He’s not a pickle, you say? Well, he’s not a veggie either–his seeds are on the inside, making him a fruit (along with the tomato, grape, and probably others).

Researchers on the wreck of the presumed “Queen Anne’s Revenge” (QAR), Blackbeard’s flagship, will conduct the fall dive expedition Sept. 15-Nov. 7, and they are thinking big. The highlight of the thousands of artifacts they expect to recover is a cannon about eight feet long and weighing more than a ton, at about 2,500 pounds. It will be the 12th cannon recovered. “Cannons are favorites among tourists and museum visitors, and the large number of cannons found at this wreck site only adds to Blackbeard’s lore,” said QAR Shipwreck Project Director Mark Wilde-Ramsing.
