so, I have to go, the library is closing on me, and I have my mom to look forward to at home, for no apparent reason she’s ready to eat me whenever I blink. Urgh.

So, great session last night, I didn’t play as much since they plaed more songs I didn’t know and some that I may have known they played at warp speed, but it was fun to listen to. A slightly different crowd, this time I was seated next to the session leader, who on one side and another very good player (fiddles, both) on the other, a little intimidating, but quite a nice sound, *goes to practice*
More of a variety this time too, there was a harp and a piper, he was pretty good.

See you maybe tomorrow, but not Sunday, I’m going HOME then, YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY. I’m glad I could be here, but I am going to be so happy to be home again, I miss Dad and Circles something dreadful.

    Hello peoples!

I was wondering if I could ask everyone for some advice. OK, last year, I took an online class at school to make up for my light schedule one semester. I had one hard core class, the online class, and 3 easy classes (0 homework). All together, I had 0 free time, but it was either that or be bored out of my mind. So, this year, I’m getting pressure to take another online class. Here are the pros and cons.

    Pros:
    1. it will help my computer skills
    2. it will increase my GPA, making it more likely that I will get scholarships (goodness knows I will need them)
    3. my Dad wants me to do it, if I don’t, he will be mad at me and there will months of ugliness

    Cons:
    1. My actual school schedule is different this year. Instead of 1 hard core class and all other easy classes, I have 1 hard class (which is the class my Dad teaches, so I have to work EXTRA hard in there), 1 medium class (easy to understand but a heavy workload), and 2 easy classes (one is French, so I have to do a little more in that class then I would in other easy classes). I’m worried that I will be entirely overloaded, since there were already some points last year when I getting towards being that way anyway and I only had ONE hard class then.
    2. I’m not really interested in the subject of the online class, Psychology. I mean, I guess it would be interesting, but……. not really.
    3. I’m worried I’ll end up like my sister. She took 2 online classes and 3 classes at school and she was WAY overloaded. We only saw her twice a day, when she got up in the morning and when she ate dinner with us (parents made her). Besides that, she was always either at school or on the computer. She hardly ever slept. All of the friends that she kind of had drifted away from her because she stopped associating with them because she didn’t have time to. And she was so overworked that, no matter how much she stayed up late to work, she never could finish on time. She was always one step behind the due dates of her online classes, which made my parents mad at her. They began not to trust her anymore, thinking she was doing something else other then working.

And I just don’t know what to do! Part of me doesn’t want to do it, but another part of me thinks that I should. What do I DO?!

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  19. (18) kiwimuncher, could you prints out those pros and cons to show your parents? (Slightly edited if necessary.) Sometimes writing can be more persuasive and easier to manage. Your parents may not realize how stressful this is for you. Even if you still end up taking the course, they might be able to help you work out better strategies for coping with it, so you don’t end up in your sister’s situation.

My parents weren’t always aware of the pressures they put on us. Then again, I for one, tended not to enlighten them. We didn’t figure out some of that until years afterward.

Let’s see, I haven’t been around here for a while. Hurricane Ike has been hitting us pretty much all day. It’s not that bad – we’re far enough inland that we’re just getting “tropical storm conditions,” so it’s windy and rainy and the power has blipped on and off, but it’s not actually that dangerous. I hope the power will stay on – I like my computer. I think it’s off in some parts of town, but not here. School was canceled yesterday because of Ike, which was kind of cool.

I have a really bad cold. I have tons of homework. I’ve got college auditions and applications to work on, have to turn in the National Merit stuff in like a week and I haven’t started it, have three projects that I also haven’t started, and am stressed and crabby and tired. Oh, and I have a stupid correspondence course over bowling and tennis to finish (for my last semester of PE credit). I hate school. A GED sounds better and better every day.

We didn’t have a driver, so we had to walk, and it was raining most of the time. Worse yet, one of my acquaintances brought her boyfriend along, so we had to watch the two of them be all lovey-dovey for two hours. Then, at the very end, one of my friends wanted to go to a few more houses and she almost made us late- we had to make a mad dash for the high school through pouring rain. The “festivities” ended at 1, and I don’t think my clothes are dry yet.

Lizzie, as far as the “tailored the results to match your location”, I’m pretty sure that’s just based on your IP address, not that you gave them some info (like your gmail)–it seems like lots of search things automatically know your location (at least in general, like say the state). 50. The object of fencing is to poke your opponent, but there are other things you have to do in order to poke the person. I like fencing, but I’m not very good at the poking and anti- poking techniques.
In other words, I stink at fencing.I had this weird fencing teacher that never told us his name, and accidentally announced that he thought I wasn’t very good, but he didn’t say it that way, it was more llike, “Lina would be great at fencing if….er”

50 – What bubbles said, basically, but I will go into more detail.
The object of (foil) fencing is obviously to stab the opponent. However, a very small percentage of a good bout is the poking. The stab requires virtually no skill, but getting there takes a lot. You have to know how to parry well. You have to be quick. You have to know how to deftly disengage a parry. You have to be clever. You have to work extremely hard just to get to that point. It sounds like, as you said, she just has a really bad teacher.

    (A few minutes later)
Nope. It hasn’t stopped. There is the lightest drizzle. I couldn’t even notice it until I stood still and stared at a tree. Tomorrow it’s supposed to stop I guess. I’m still sick though. I feel like I am going to die. It was even worse last night. I got to bed, after watching part of Saturday Night Live (which was hilarious) and as I was going to my room, it felt like I was in a dream, but 500x the pain. I almost passed out. Oh, wait, I did pass out on my bed, that was lucky. But I woke up 8 times last night, and then at 5:00 in the morning, I went and sat on the couch in our living room for two and a half hours. At 7:30, my puppy started whining like crazy. At first I was like “Wow, Nessa really needs to pee.” and when I went up the stairs, I saw she had a look of fear in her eyes. Then I was thinking she was prolly scared of the thunderstorm raging outside. My mom told me to take her to go potty quickly. So I urged her to get up, and when she stood, she collapsed and started whining even more. She laid down and wouldn’t use her front right paw. She would whine if we put any pressure on it. So we knew something was wrong with it. My dad asked if the vet was open, my mom said no, and than my dad asked if there was an emergency vet thingy, and my mom said there was. My dad told me to get a flashlight while he massaged her foot. So I ran downstairs, got a flashlight, ran back upstairs, and the minute I came in with the flashlight, Nessa get up. My dad had been massaging it while my mom calmed her down. We figured she had slept on her foot, so it fell asleep. We were so relieved.

Ughh. My dad deleted my post while he was trying to repair the Internet. -.-

I just got back from my soccer tournament, which is why I haven’t been posting since Friday. :P We did all right. Actually, we did awesome, but the final result doesn’t really reflect that.

We lost our first game 2-1. Our only goal was off a PK kick that we got when I got sandwiched between two players and slammed to the ground, but we really should have tied them 2-2. We scored the second goal, even, but the ref (who, honestly, probably couldn’t have seen what was going on anyways) said that one of our forwards was sitting on the goalie. In reality, the goalie had her leg trapped, and she couldn’t get up. But they discounted the goal anyways.

We won each of our next two games 3-0 (I had a total of 3 assists and a goal over the course of the tournament) but because that goal was discounted we ended up not moving on to the championship. How frustrating is that?

Anyways, our new corner kick runs have been working awesomely. Out of our seven goals, three were scored off of corner kicks. Our coach promised us ice cream if we got even one off corners, so we were joking that we should get triple.

At the ice cream place, I accidentally ordered a large, which turned out to be enormous. (It was probably about eight inches high!) Nobody thought I could eat it, but I actually managed too. I feel so accomplished. ^^

    So, yeah. It was fun.

That teachers have finally snapped after all of the, excuse me, crap that has been sent their way from the administrators. Advice for yall, avoid being a teacher. You get low pay, long hours, and you have to deal with both obnoxious children AND negative bosses AND a bunch of worthless, time consuming junk from central office.

Anyway, well, the staff is mad because our school had an empty slot for a new staff member. But instead of hiring a new teacher, they hired a drop out prevention specialist to work in the guidance department (which pretty much runs the school). Well, with this new person, there are 7 people in that department. My parents said that when they first started at our school, there were 3 people in guidance and the school ran as smooth as silk. Well, now there are 7 people and for some reason, the school is falling apart. Hmmmmmmmm. Strange. There have been huge schedule issues, terrible, oversized class sizes ( I mean 40 people crammed into 1 little classroom, dude, there aren’t even enough desks, much less books), and lack of organization of all the activities and reminders that must go out. apparently these guidance people have SO much work to do but somehow they can still manage to leave the school before the bell rings for the kids to leave.

Anyway, sorry I got sidetracked. Well, all of the kstaff are mad because they hired ANOTHER guidance person, who apparently has SO much work to do. At the same time, every single teacher is stretched thin because of class sizes. Last year, it was a travesty to have 30 kids. Now that is veiwed as a relatively small load. Most teachers find themselves with 35-40 students in their classrooms. There aren’t enough desks, so teachers have been helping each other out by trading off desks for whenever one of them has a planning period. It’s been a really hard situation, but teachers have been coping as best as they can.

Well, a few days ago, one of our LOVELY assitant priciples sends a LOVELY email to the whole staff.
“I have heard that teachers are telling students that their classes are overloaded and that they can’t take them in their classes. It doesn’t matter the class size! You WILL take them into your classes! I can’t BELIEVE that such things could be said! I will be looking into this!” and blah blah blah…….. I don’t know exactly whast was said but people were MAD. Of course, they’d gotten several other email like this so they were used to it. Well, one teacher retaliated. He sent the whole staff an email like this……
” I WOULD JUST LIKE TO THANK ALL OF THE STAFF FOR SUPPORTING EACH OTHER WITH THE LARGE CLASS SIZES. I KNOW IT HAS BEEN HARD FOR EVERYONE AND I THANK YOU FOR YOUR AID IN HELPING THE SCHOOL DAYS RUN SMOOTHLY. I JUST THUGHT THAT SOMEONE HAD SAY IT. SO THERE.”

Woo hoo. You imagine……… The school has been in turmoil. Of course, the teacher in question didn’t get fired because he’s a coach, but he did get a reprimand. Of course, the whole staff and a lot of the community is behind him.

    62. My school is tiny tiny tiny!!! Last year we had 30 kids in our class, and all the desks didn’t really fit. urrgh. It was really hard to get up without getting tangled with someone else’s chair. URRGH! it’s better now I guess, I’m departmentalized this year, and my class is a little smaller, about 25 people. They got smarter with desk arrangements, so there’s more space now. They repainted the whole school during the summer, and I must say, I’m a little upset they didn’t repaint the multi purpose room, which is still light pink with rust colored enormous drapes. UUURRRRRRRGGGGH!!

bubbles – That’s about how big my school is. It’s K-8, but we have only about 280 students. Of course, soon it will be double that with all the extra space they’re adding. Meh.

I’m home! We got here at 9:37 PM last night, after driving all day and stopping twice between Wisconsin and Maryland.

The trip was horrible. We went through driving rains in WI, Illinois and Illinois that leaked in the hatchback of the car, soaking a good percentage of our clothing and books that were in the back.

At a rest stop where I discovered our own indoor waterfall we got some plastic bags to put over our stuff to keep it from getting too wet and continued on our merry way. In Ohio it stopped raining, but continued to be very windy, buffeting the cars about on the road.

The rest of the trip was all right, with a magnificent sunset somewhere in Pennsylvania over the mountains and some glorious sights of the moon between the clouds.

We arrived home, were welcomed by the cat and made our way into the house where an oven full of baked potatoes were waiting for us, yum! Lots of mail to be sorted (Cicada, Cricket, but no Muse, ), visiting, unpacking the car, etc. After which I promptly jumped into a COLD shower, delighting in hard water that isn’t all nasty and slimy, aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh. (I hate soft water, yuck!)

68–I totally sympathize. The water here at school is horribly soft–everything feels all slimy, especially once you put soap in your hair. Here’s a funny/weird english story: Okay, so we’re having our first English vocab quiz. Our teacher says we can sit on the floor if we want (overhead quiz). So-s, I decides to sit up front, even though I don’t need to. I sat behind her, without noticing… and she walked backwards, tripped over me, and fell on my hand and my To Kill a Mockingbird book.

I swear, my freshman year has already been made for me. Too bad no one had a camera…

Oh, and some random kid in that class and I came up with an idea. At our school, you can start a club with just a few people, so we thought if the minimum req. is 2 people, we can start the People-who-sit-indoors-all-day-for-most-of-the-year.

  76. (75, 69) Do we mean the same thing by hard water? When I lived in Wisconsin, the water was very hard — meaning full of minerals, from the limestone aquifers there. Soap wouldn’t lather, everything got scummy, I had to keep chipping scale off the coils of my humidifier, and I drank distilled water to keep from getting kidney stones. Here on the east coast (where MF also lives), the water has a lower mineral content (i.e., it’s softer).

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  77. Luna the Lovely says:

Robert–oh, yes. I think we mean the same thing. Back home in AK, we have hard water–which tastes delicious, by the way. The soap does lather, although not as easily as here at school, the tiles in the shower are very scummy (grr, wish dad would clean it more often), and the faucets and dishwasher and everything gets white (and a little greenish, sometimes)–I think it’s calcium and perhaps limestone–buildup, which if it gets really bad, dad will soak off with vinegar.

But here at school, I’m pretty sure we probably have city water, and I think the difference in the feel of the water is because it’s soft (that’s what mom said, anyway). When I take a shower, my hair feels really slimy–at home it feels more coarse when wet–and soap makes it more so–like how it normally feels once I add conditioner. It’s really annoying, because I can’t tell by feel when the soap is washed out.

So, yeah, I think we mean the exact same thing by hard water (and distilled water tastes horrible–hard water tastes good; at least ours does, anyway).

  78. Midnight Fiddler (she of 2 spzdk, 500 PiePoints and 30 Muszey points) says:

77~ What I mean by “hard water” is water that hasn’t been through a water softener that adds salt and whatnot in it. Water softeners are a pet peeve of mine, the water comes out slimy and gross. It doesn’t wash the soap off as well, and never feels clean, as well as not being fit to drink. That’s what I mean by soft water.

The water here (which is some of the best water anyone will ever taste, by the way) has lots of calcium and minerals in it, but soap lathers perfectly fine.
(In fact, when you let our water sit in a pot for a bit you get a thin white coating of calcium on the bottom.)

Changing your name just to change it is confusing to the rest of us, and I have a hard enough time keeping track of everyone as it is!
Some MBers have several names that they alternate through, and (after a while) that can be a good system, since all those names mean one person, however, it often takes awhile to remember who is who.

So, if your name still represents who you are, and we all know it, changing it for the sake of changing it isn’t all that great of an idea.

There are two things in theater which I cannot or will not do: Monologues, and musicals. Those are the only two plays we’re doing this year. WHY???
I’m going to the script reading, of course. I got a major part, or so it said on the bulletin that was posted. But monologues terrify me. The thought of doing a monologue actually makes me want to cry. There’s nothing to react to. It feels static.

Talk Like a Pirate Day, huh? I shall proceed to get pied by stating that I have never heard of it, and will not be talking and dressing like a pirate, as I do not feel like having all the other college students, and my parents and gramma, who are here for family weekend (Yes! It is so nice to see them–I think I’ve missed them, afterall) look at me like I’m crazy. I know, not very muserish, is it?

Anyways, GAPAs dearest, I have a question–my sister, in one of her emails, said that one of her friends at her college had points taken off her paper by her teacher because she only put one space after her periods, instead of two. Now, this poses a question–my sister and I both learned that two spaces are correct (like commas before and/or in lists). And while i think it is a bit picky to take off points for the number of spaces, I was wondering what the correct style is now. My sister looked it up online, and she says it appears that it actually is only one space now, and my roomie says she does one space. So, GAPAs, what’s the rule? One space or two, or whichever you prefer? And while were on the subject, what’s proper now for commas before and/or in lists (I always use one, and always will–same with two spaces. It’s just the way I learned.)

    Pie 0

    Pie 0

  171. (171) Like you, I learned to use two spaces, though I’ve noticed cases — like the MuseBlog comments — in which software strips out what it deems extra spaces. Maybe that is having an effect on styles. But it’s been years since I was on editorial staff and am not up on current practice.

I use the serial comma, too — also known as the Harvard or Oxford comma — because I think it lends itself to fewer ambiguities. In fact, that’s my guiding rule in all such decisions, when given a choice: which practice offers the most clarity?

But I doubt the disagreement will ever end, and style manuals differ. A Wikipedia article summarizes the pros and cons fairly well.

I’ve always used only one space. I think I asked someone about that a while ago and they said that the double spacing practice dated back to typewriters, and while it wasn’t really necessary anymore lots of people still used it because they were in the habit already.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  174. Luna the Lovely says:

173–Do you know, I only just noticed (right after I posted my comment) that the WordPress software removes the second space after the period. I was looking at all the posts, trying to figure out how everyone did theirs, and saw only single spaces, and I looked at one of my posts and realized–wait, mine’s become single spaced as well!

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  175. (175 176) There is, in fact, a Wikipedia article on this subject as well. Quite a convoluted history actually, but the trend has been towards single-spacing since World War II, though typewriters were stuck with double-spacing before the advent of proportional spacing. (Yes, I was there. I remember the excitement.) Whatever the case, I don’t see why a teacher would count off either way.

As for me, I think it would take too much effort to change the decades-long habit of typing two spaces at the end of the sentence, especially when the software is going to compensate for it, anyway.

    Pie 0

  176. Luna the Lovely says:

177-so, I’ve been doing it wrong all my life? Oh well, as long as I don’t ever get points taken off on a paper because of it, I really don’t care. When I was in first or second grade (or younger) and first learned how to type (as in, two or one fingered typing), my parents taught me that it was double space after periods, and I’m sure the grammar check on our Windows at home says single space in incorrect… Anyways, to me, it will always be double space after periods, always be a comma before and/or in lists, and Pluto will always be a planet.

    Pie 0

  177. Luna the Lovely says:

178–I just skimmed that article–rather interesting, actually. I know I said that I think the Word on our windows at home (old windows, several years–not vista) says single spacing is wrong, and corrects to double spacing, but the Microsoft Office 2008 on my Mac laptop, does not green underline single spacing. Then again, it does not green underline quadruple spacing after periods either, and we all know that is not correct spacing.

So anyway, regarding the play. There was a read-through today and OH MY GOSH. I actually think I can do it. It’s a sweet play, called Daughters. It’s nine monologues about different teenage girls. The best thing about them is that they’re all so different! Not just the situations, but the voice. There are a few I’m not necessarily comfortable with doing, but for the most part I’m fine with it, even the ones which I normally wouldn’t be. All for the sake of the character.

ok–kokopelli sighting! There is an anthropology collection in one of the buildings on campus, and they had some old pots, from Native American tribes. And (not surprisingly), several featured Kokopelli playing his flute. I took some pictures with my cell phone, but I don’t have a clue how to upload them to the computer (I’ve had my cell a month, max).

Now, much weirder–Kokopelli’s influence has spread to the campus. On the quad by the building with the anthropology collection, there was a fundraising event going on: Pie a Professor! When I saw the sign, it was all I could do not to start laughing maniacally. Unfortunately, to pie a professor, it cost $5 for 3 pies, and $2 for one pie, and I really didn’t feel like spending that kind of money…..Might’ve, if my parents and gramma hadn’t been with me. 200 – Gratz! My team had a game much like that a few weeks ago, minus the keep-away part. We had been playing Premier teams all summer, and finally got to start playing Select teams again during league play – what a difference a summer can make! We’ve won two games and tied one (although we should have won that one) in league play and won two games and lost one (although we should have tied that one at a tournament last weekend.

These weren’t super-easy teams, either. The two that we’ve beaten are teams that we’ve played tons of times before, and it’s a bit of a rivalry. We beat the first one 5-0, and we won our game today 2-1. I actually scored/basically scored both of our goals, and both off corners. One was a ball that got over all of the defenses’ heads, so I had an amazing volley into the goal. The other one I trapped, and then the defender tried to knee it away but accidentally kneed it into the goal. :D

Lancaster city officials said this week that they’re paving over a quarter-mile strip of asphalt grooved to play the William Tell Overture when auto tires speed over it.
The road was completed this month as part of an ad campaign for Honda. It’s engineered to play the overture — also known as the theme to “The Lone Ranger” — at perfect pitch for motorists driving Honda Civics at 55 mph.

    Well, I’m home. :D

Yesterday was AMAZING beyond all belief. We stayed at some cabins right on Calvert Cliffs (it was more accommodating than a motel for less money, and much more fun to boot with the beach and all). The night before we walked along the beach with a very bright moon and a fresh breeze blowing in our faces, I waded on the water and got myself all soaked and ended up shivering my way back up the cliffs and to the cabin….it was quite worth it though!

After breakfast we went into Solomons and found out where the tall ships were, the Maryland Dove wasn’t open yet (it was before the event actually opened) so we made our way to the Kalmar Nyckel because there was something on the website about public sails. We got there and they had one ticket left, and, if we bought it, I could go by myself since I was old enough. Luckily, two other people didn’t show, so both my parents got to go on as well. :)

The sail was wonderful. WONDERFUL. The Kalmar Nyckel is a very beautiful ship. It’s a replica of a Dutch ship from about 1625, so it’s all square rigged save for the mizzen, and has the (rather queer looking) spritsail-topsial that has its own fighting top. The whole ship is painted blue, and has the most exquisite carvings (well, exquisite as far as replicas go, if you want really exquisite go look up the Vasa–of check your old Muses, one time they had a back page devoted to her.)

Anyway, we got to go sailing for four hours and I am now determined to be on the crew. Thankfully, Mom is also wanting to do it, so it looks like I know what I’m doing in January, when the next sail training is….. :D I’m very, very excited.

After that, we went to see the Dove, as lovely as ever. (I’ve been on her twice before.) It was charming and reminded me of the Jamestown ships quite forcibly, since she’s about the size of the Elizabeth and built like them at around the time of the older replicas.

After oogling at ships all day we went to the campsite (where the tactical was) for a little bit to check it out for today and see what was going on. Met several people we know from French And Indian war events (I actually ran into some of our musician friends who are the ones I blame for playing the music I do….it’s all their fault, no matter what they say! ;) )
We also found some nice stockings, the ones with vertical stripes! (Yes, it’s exciting to me, I no have period correct striped stockings!) We poked around, visited and had fun. (Although I couldn’t convince my parents that I needed one of those 1812 period dresses….. ;) )

Today we went to the Grand Tactical itself. We missed most of the battles, but that was okay, we saw a lot of other things.
When we got there the first battle was winding down. so we looked at the historical signs for the park and then went to a talk about clothing in that time period. Wow, there were some really beautiful pieces there (the speaker was talking about pieces of historical clothing that she owned). I still think that the mid-18th century (F&I, the time period I do, and early Rev. War a bit) clothing is the most elegant, I must say, some of those pieces were to die for. Well, I should rephrase that, I think that 1750s, 60s and early 70s women’s clothing is some of the most elegant and becoming things a female can possibly wear. In any time period, ever. They are graceful, practical (mostly!) and just plain gorgeous.
Men’s clothing from that time period is nice, and quite lovely, but in the later years (late 1700s, early 1800s) it’s some of the most elegant and handsome things a guy can wear, yum. Okay, mark me as pathetic, but you must admit, historical clothes have an elegance and shape that is not often (if ever) found in modern dress. The shape of bodies was emphasized and made elegant, the clothes actually said something about the wearer, and in the 18the and early 19th centuries there was an elegance that not many other time periods really come close to. It was just right. Okay, enough of that.

After the clothing talk, we went (at my request again) to a sea chanty workshop. It wasn’t to much great shakes, but fun the same, the interesting part was after…..the gent who presented it had some music that he was handing out, so I went up and asked for some. We were all talking a bit, and dad mentioned that I played concertina. Don (the guy we were talking to) said immediately, “Oh, an Anglo?” (those are more common) to which I replied in the negative, saying that I had an English.
“Really? That’s what I play! Do you have it with you?”
“Umm, yeah, it’s in the car.”
“Ooh, could you get it? I’ll wait here!”
So I jogged to the parking lot to fetch it, brought it back and we spent however long it was handing it back and forth, playing and singing tunes, and talking about the music in general.
I also got an invitation (which was later turned to a demand) to audition for playing the concertina, fiddle or both (the fiddle wasn’t with me then but I said that I played) for a local-ish group that sings chanties……so who knows? I may be able to, but I’m not sure that mom would be too happy about dragging me to rehearsals once a week about an hour away. We’ll see.

Anyway, we ended up visiting and playing music for a good while and then going to look at a cannon and then poking around the event some more.

    We’re now home and tired.
I’m going to submit this post and then take a bath and go to bed. *is very tired*

I have random and really awesome news–well, that is to say it’s really awesome for me, but I doubt anyone else cares…..When I was taking my parents around campus, I took them to see the “creepy” section of the library. It has this one small room on the third floor that is old, gloomy, and lined with cages–little study cubbies, that have cage doors with locks. They’re seriously like little prison cells. Anyway, while taking them through there, guess what I discoverd? Three of the Potter books! I am so thrilled. They had Azkaban, Goblet, and two copies of Prince. So now I am not quite so separated from my precious books…..Yes! Although, I have to wonder why they don’t have PS, Chamber, Phoenix, and Hallows…..Oh, well. I guess you can’t have it all.

    Hi.
School is currently owning my life.
My laptop got a virus and I’m going to have to get the motherboard/hard drive cleaned. Ughhh.

My mom has been going out of town for work way too much which means staying at my dad’s on school days. It really stresses out my little sister and she’s getting more bratty and cranky than usual. I feel bad for her. She’s so used to her habits and routines. She’s also going through the phase where she doesn’t need any family in her life. I know she’ll snap out of it because I was like that at her age, but I feel bad for her. Part of the phase is not wanting to be around dad and fighting with him a lot, so us having to stay there more isn’t very good.
I drove from my dad’s house to my mom’s yesterday. It was fun but a little scary.
I got my homecoming stuff. Dress, makeup, shoes. It’s pretty fun to be able to get all fancy.

Sorry for not replying to anyone. I don’t really have any input about anything people are talking about though.

ok, anybody. One good reason why a distance ed english course I took through a college back home transfered as the Eng 1000 pre-req for a distance ed course I took through the college I am now attending, but does not transfer as the exact same Eng 1000 or equivalent needed to graduate, that my caking advisor finally emailed me back and said, yes, you still have to take it, having taken that distance ed course that had it as a pre-req does not waive it. Hello, the distance ed course was HIGHER level, not only did it require eng 1000 as a pre-req and my previous eng count then, but I got a caking A in that course, so obviously I know what I am doing, and do not need to go back to the basic english, and i really hate english, a nd the last thing I swant to do next semester is take a caking english course (my roomie’s taking it, it sounds like a horrible @$#%%ing pain–teacher never comments on papers, never responds, make them post everything on some wiki blog). Seriously, why the cake do I have to take something that is the cakingn equivalent of something I took passed, and proved I could do by passing a higher level course through the same bleeping college i”m no attending?

  297. (299) Luna, have you talked with someone further up the ladder, perhaps in the academic dean’s office? Sometimes exceptions can be made or people have misinterpreted the rules. It never hurts to investigate further.

For instance, my AP score should have placed me out of freshman English, but my school insisted everyone had to take the course, no matter what. A week or so after class started, my professor said, “what are you doing here?” He went to bat for me, and I got to drop the class.

This was a small private school, by the way. If it helps, think of the hassles as a training ground for the even more insane institutions you’ll have to deal with after college.

That’s basically what my dad suggested when he was here for the weekend–that if my advisor did not write me back, or said I had to take it, to get in contact with someone from the academic dean’s office. So, that’s going to be my next step, I suppose. Hopefully it turns out I won’t have to take it, but if I do, at least I know I can pass it! Yeah, you might notice I’m not in nearly as gloomy a mood now–probably because it’s no longer morning……

  300. Luna the Lovely says:

ok, to avoid confusion, let’s call my college C (for college), and the one I took the eng course through back home, A.

My advisor wrote me back again. I asked her why, if the course I had taken through A counted as the eng 1000 pre-req for the online distance ed course through C, it didn’t count as the eng 1000 required for graduation.

According to her, they don’t check for pre-req’s when you enroll for a distance ed class. I think that’s crap–if that is true, why would they list pre-req’s for distance ed courses? She also says that they determine the equivalency of coursework taken off campus, and that the Eng department has reviewed this institution [A], and determined that the course I took was the first of a two part comp class that was offered.

I don’t think that’s true. I’m pretty sure the course I took was a stand alone course, and had no subsequent course that went with it. Additionally, Eng 1000 is a semester course–why would I have to take a year-long course eng course for it to be equivalent? Does not compute.

I will talk to my parents, and depending on what they say, try contacting the academic dean’s office, but it is not looking very promising. I have this feeling I will be stuck taking this english…..Joy.

And he said the word “feat” and the substitute teacher was all like “and tell everyone what feat means, and kids,” at this she motioned to us, “it’s not your feet.” And so that smart alecky kid was all acting proud and telling us what the word feat meant, and we were all fuming. He is so freakin’ annoying! The sub thought we knew NOTHING. And so she thought that these two really stuck-up kids in the class were the only non-idiots. So she called on me, and (she thought I was the dumbest) she was getting ready to help me when I said the word “articulate” and just kept on going, and she was all like, shocked or something, and I was bored out of my mind, and the smart alecky kids were sitting there, like they were the rulers of the world, and so I finished and she was like “Do you know what articulate means?” And I shrugged and nodded my head. And I mumbled, “What? It’s a word. Big whoop.” And she glared at me for the rest of the day.

Umm, after my very exciting weekend the past few days have seemed immensely boring, save some of the lovely plans I have formed for getting myself on a tall ship, getting into more time periods, playing music with other people (instead of by myself in my room with my CDs), and all sorts of other charming propositions. Today I was quite sorely tempted to dress in my 18th c. clothes just for the fun of it, since I’m not going anywhere, nobody’s coming all the way back here, and there’s no reason not to. Besides, I have some lovely new stockings that I can’t wait to wear, and April just seems very, very far away since we’re not going to the EPR this year.
So, I compromised. I put on the stockings, rubbed the mold off my shoes (the last event was wet and they must have still been damp when they got stowed away in my trunk), finger polished the buckles and admired the effect. Quite lovely, even the scuffs and muck on the shoes looked right. ;)

317, 320–60-30-10-1 is an improv game where the audience gives you a dangerous situation, like “the factory where the world’s largest rocket is being built.” You and a few other people do a 60-second long scene, and at the end of it you all die. If you begin dying too early, you just continue dying until the set amount of time is up.
Then you do the same scene in 30 seconds, maybe cutting a few needless lines.
Then you do it again, in 10 seconds.

    — me and my mom saw The Return of the King some 13-14 times in theaters. That involved going to progressively more out of the way theaters, or watching in viewing rooms farther and farther back in the theater. also we recently went into LA to see a special screening of The Fellowship of the Ring. We watch the whole trilogy at least two or three times at year.

I don’t think a day goes by when we don’t reference Lord of the Rings somehow. quotes form the movie and the books are weaved into our conversations. My mom’s always reading the books, so every so often she’ll talk about Tolkien’s word choice or something. If we see any of the actors/actresses in another movie or show we’re just like “oh wasn’t the casting so great for lord of the rings”.

ok, GAPA? I have a question (give or take one or two), to which I need an answer ASAP (as in before 10:30 tomorrow–because I have my bio test at 11).

Consider a polysaccharide consisting of 828 glucose molecules. The total hydrolysis of the polysaccharide would result in the production of

    1) 827 glucose molecules
    2) 828 glucose molecules and 828 water molecules
    3) 827 glucose molecules and 827 water molecuels
    4) 828 glucose molecules and no water molecules
    5) 827 water molecules

The Krebs cycle produces which of the following molecules that then transfer energy to the electron transport system? [pretty sure the answer he gave is right here, just wanting to make sure]

    1) FADH2 and NADH
    2) NADH, FADH2, and ATP
    3) CO2 and FAD
    4) ATP and CO2
    5) NADH and ATP

During aerobic respiration, which of the following directly donates electrons to the electron transport chain at the lowest energy level?

    1) FADH2
    2) ATP
    3) ADP + Pi (i is subscripted)
    4) NADH
    5) NAD+

The professor gave answers, but so far he gave the wrong on answer on one problem, and according to another student, he deliberately gave wrong answers on one or more problems so we would not just memorize old exams.

Also, a question he did not answer, and to which I wish to confirm what my TA answered:

A maple leaf is at which level in the hierarchical organization of life?

    1) organ
    2) population
    3) tissue
    4) organism
    5) organelle

    Thanks so much!

  331. Luna the Lovely –
The only one of your questions I can answer off the top of my head with complete confidence is the maple leaf question – which is (drumroll) an organ.

I’m pretty sure about the answer to the Krebs cycle question too. I think it’s 2) NADH, FADH2, and ATP.
But I won’t swear to it. You should definitely confirm this.

I’m also fairly sure about the answer to the question about which compound donates electrons to the electron transport chain. And the answer is (I think!): NADH.

So what about the polysaccharide question? Well, I really don’t remember how hydrolysis works. I THINK you end up with 828 glucose and no water but there is a very high likelihood that this is wrong!

Alright, I managed to find time to run over to my bio prof’s office after talking to geog about hw. The answer to the Krebs cycle question is what I thought–FADH2 and NADH–the ATP is energy, and does not transport it to the third step.

The answer to which directly donates electorns at the lowest energy level is FADH2

And the hydrolysis of poly saccharides yields 828 glucose, and no water.

Didn’t actually ask him on the leaf one, but the consensus between my TA, another TA, and now you, is that it is an organ.

    Thanks again for your help!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I’m pretty sure at best I managed 90%, looking my answers up just now after the exam. That would be an A–just barely. If I got a lower grade, like a B, that’s really bad for my GPA–bio is a 5 credit course. If I got a C (and that continues on later tests)–I’m screwed. I CANNOT, I repeat CANNOT get a C in the course–I am only allowed one C if I want to keep my guaranteed position in vet school. If I got a B, I might be able to recover from it, but it doesn’t sound very promising for getting an A in the course. However, most of what we’ve done so far is on the cellular level–which was never my strong suit. Damn, I hope it was only those five I got wrong.

373~ While I think that having human milk for sail is weird, I also think that breeding animals specifically for producing milk for humans is just as strange. Humans are the only animals (yes, animals) that insist on drinking the milk of another species, and drinking it beyond infancy. I believe this to be just as weird.
My uncle is a dairy farmer, he has one of the “cleanest” and most “humane” farms in the state of Wisconsin (according to him and my grandparents). well, I’ve been to their farm. I’ve seen the cows. I do not consider it natural or humane.
Their tails are cut off so that they can’t inadvertently smack the workers in the face when they’re hooking up the machines that milk the cows. They stand on a concrete floor, unable to move more than a few inches forward or back,
If this is natural, I’d hate to think what is unnatural. The raising of other animals for our own selfish purposes is disgusting and, while I don’t think animals should be given the exact same rights as humans, I do think that we as a culture are debasing ourselves by continuing these practices.

379: I am sure that although some dairy farms are inhumane as you describe (or worse), i also don’t think they all are. As I think I mentioned, my roomie’s family does dairy, and from what I’ve heard, their farm is nothing like that. I don’t think my roomie would hold with that, given views of her’s I know (such as being passionately against puppy mills, and such, and plus, she wants to be a vet too). I doubt my roomie has her cows (yes, she has some of her own) “forcibly” impregnated while they are still recovering from their previous pregnancy, especially given how adamantly she is against that practice in dogs (puppy mills). Now, don’t get me wrong, I realize plenty of places do maltreat their animals, but not every dairy or other institution is like that. *end rant*

    oo, sorry, double post.

we did readings for theater company today. We read the first half of the princess bride. I have to say, if I were allowed to choose any character in the play to be, I would choose Wesley. He has the best lines. *wishes she were not a girl, if only to get the part of wesley* *sigh* I guess i’ll have to settle for someone else. They’re doing Inigo as a girl, which I think is great, there aren’t enough significant female roles as it is. *desperately wishes she could play wesley*

Here’s a good question- what interesting objects are within two feet of you at this moment?
I have my nautical prism paperweight, a deck of cards, a mini-globe, a pokemon figurine and a glue stick.

Yay! The great and awesome Hermes thinks I am proficient at the pandeiro!

That was not random. Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean it was random.

Capoeira was really weird today. There’s a new kid named Nick (not really), and he has a somewhat…. unusual hairdo, though since we already have a mohawk and a bun (on a guy), it’s not too radical. Hermes (not his real name either, duh) taught the first half of class, and when our teacher came in he made us do everything over again. –_– And after class, Juan (not real either, I’m going to stop saying this) and his girlfriend were doing a PDA/contact improv in the hallway, and it was kind of hard to get to the door around them.

I’m not sure what to think at this point.

(391) In addition to an easel, a test-tube rack full of paint brushes, and divers other painting supplies, in easy reach are a large chunk of rock embedded with fossils, a stained-glass panel I made years ago, a tiny patch of garlic chives for kitties to munch on, a Muse Academy magnet, a Kokopelli tile given to me by Purple Panda, and a sleeping cat.

I said I would return with my opinions of the milk issue. Here it is:
Drinking human milk when you’re grownup is highly unsettling. It probably tastes much different, too. On the other hand, dairy farms are horrible horrible horrible. I don’t think drinking milk is bad. I like milk. Perhaps it’s odd, as Fiddler said, that we drink milk past infancy, but then again, other animals might, too, if they had opposable thumbs to aid the milking process. Come to that, ants drink the milk of aphids, or something like that. Any cat or dog will gladly drink milk if you set it in front of them. But to get back on track. Drinking milk isn’t bad, in my opinion, but dairy farms are, and taking all the milk is. When I was little, we lived in a very strange place, which I will not name. There was a cow that lived on this one guy’s farm, but I she was sort of a community cow. We got milk from her, but always left plenty for the calf, and we treated her humanely, and everything. Now, we still get milk and cheese from local sources, sometimes people with whom we are personally acquainted, sometimes small local farms. A lot of the time it isn’t pasteurized, which is always something of a relief. I know, it’s less safe, but the thought of having your milk boiled…EW.

390- THE PRINCESS BRIDE? Oh my gosh! -is jealous- You should read the part of Inigo. :D

    391- Interesting? Um… nothing.

391: Interesting? Guess that depends on your definition of the word…..A picture of my family, my digital camera, my cell phone, HP1 and HP4 DVD, an HP journal, HP daily calendar, HP monthly calendar, the thermostat for my dorm, several paperback books form home (one of which I started on the plane trip down and still haven’t finished–it’s not bad, I just don’t have time), all my school text books, note books, notes, etc, my laptop (duh), my printer, my wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, a jar of pencils, pens, sharpies, hilighters, a ruler, my HP UNO cards, a double deck of regular cards, a min thumb deck of cards, a jar of peanut butter, scissors, a couple pieces of silverware, half a loaf of bread, a graphing calculator, index cards, a half rotten banana (need to throw that along with the other two across the room away), my purse, all my important papers, all my school supplies I haven’t lsited, my backpack, hairties, my computer case, my fridge (containing several cans of soda and a jar of jelly), and anyway, none of this is at all interesting, so I digress.

So, my roomie just got back from her first chem test of the year (the same chem I am taking next semester), and it sounds like it is going to be pure hell. Apparently nobody felt at all good aobut the test, and lots of people left in tears, and she says it was nothing at all like the practice exams and quizzes they did, and she is pretty sure she did horrible. I’m afraid to think about the fact that I”m taking it next semester (not necessarily the same teacher, but accoridng to Megan, he’s supposed to be the easiest of them all).

Spekaing of tests, apparently the biolab final is going to be a practical, like having a couple minutes to look at something under a microscope and then answer questions about it…..I’m scared to death of that (somebody said it’s suppoed to be the hardest test we will ever take in our lives)–I’ve never taken a practical test in my life–just paper exams. Downside of being homeschooled, perhaps….

    Anyways.

I love Green. She is a best friend of mine. Do you guys have a best friend like that? someone that understands you with few or no words? With whom you can talk for hours? I have two. I have Green and MG. I am lucky in this.

398- I almost immediately said Leafygreen, true, we are very close, but the web of MB has made her a little confused. Including the fact that we have no classes except lunch together, we’re drifting apart, but holding on. Dang. Now I’ve gotten myself sad again. My two best friends and I are separated. Livvy is in Korea (*cries*), and we barely send each other emails. Cod, I’m so depressed. Life is going rather horribly, as my birthday, which was yesterday, was barely acknowledged, I’m slumping down in school, and everything’s going WRONG. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, WRONG.
