A Year of Random Celebrations

The Holiday Reform discussion has inspired us to declare 2009 The Year of Random Celebrations. The name of each monthly random thread (along with its title graphics) will commemorate a subject worthy of Muserly honor. For example, we expect there will be some form of Pastry Appreciation Month.

Nominations are welcome.

  1. July: Harry Potter appreciation month!

March: A celebration of the birth month of everyone’s favorite MBer      Just kidding…..

  2. 4–works for me. I was just thinking July, as it is his birthday. But the actual month the first one was published works. Presumably the month they were published by Bloomsbury in England? Three hundred hardback and two hundred paperback–or perhaps it was vice versa. Regardless, that was the miniscule size of the very first ever printing. Tiny, really.

  3. Actually, we’d prefer to stay away from specific characters, books, personalities, copyrighted materials, and so on, though fantasy literature could work. What we’d really like to recognize are the distinctive, unexpected kinds of things people who are not MuseBloggers generally overlook.

  4. (8) Science Fiction Month is certainly possible. Some offbeat aspect of science fiction would be even better. I’m sure the mind who came up with interviews of scientifically inaccurate fictional aliens and SSSS accounts of the space-age saga could think of something….

  5. Well, March will obviously have to be Flying Pastry Month (it has Pi Day, y’know).
21- We already have a GAPA Appreciation Day. What would we do for a whole month? Wait! I’ve got it! I could take a month off of school, one of the GAPAs could give me their password, and I could moderate for that whole month!! Or…not. Not that we don’t appreciate them, though .
I agree that May should be Sci-Fi month, with special emphasis on HG2G. Would festive colors come with each of these months?

  6. 21- That’s August.

    Sci Fi Month! YES!

    20- That’s a good idea…. June? That’s when school gets out.

  7. 24-Sure….. I dunno, it actually sounds kinda New Moon-ish when I look at my post again….. we need a cooler name. How about……..
    Um……
    *has no ideas* Any suggestions?

  8. Some of these more general topics could be given a bit of a twist by honing in on specifics. For instance, free associating with “Languages,” I come up with:

    Diacritical Marks (Remember the Umlaut!)
    Our Favorite Parts of Speech
    Great Moments in Etymology
Parenthetical Phrases We Couldn’t Live Without
    In Praise of the Alphabets

  9. 26- Alphabets, my dear bunniful. We want Greek and Aribic and Russian! and anything else using a non-latin keyboard.

  10. (28) Of course, most esteemed TMFA. I also thought of “Obsolete Alphabets.”

These are merely some suggestions I hope will inspire others. Don’t be afraid to be daring and silly. The more ideas we come up with, the more likely we’ll have good ones to choose from. And some of those that don’t become Random Thread themes might become threads of their own.

  11. I began to have some little ideas, and they wouldn’t stop coming. Can anyone improve them?

    Flag Day
*International, I guess it should really be Vexiollogy Day, but I’m not sure if that’s cooler sounding, or scary like an operation. On this day, each person finds a country they know nothing about, and learns what the flag means, any wear shirts displaying the flags.

    Manifesto Day
Everyone finds a manifesto. As a greeting, you read it, or an excerpt, if it is too long. Write your own, if you feel inspired.

    28 Hour Day Week (28HDW)
To test the 28 hour day, for a week (possibly 2 or more are needed. I guess it depends how fast you adjust.). Hmm. A celebration of nonstandard time? Like: I’ll get to school when the rain has filled the pot. ( The pot must fit all of the international pot time telling standards, of course, accurate to 100th of a gyaliter and impermeable. don’t forget the rain-rate tables to be consulted!)

    Esperanto
Because it needs a day. Tie in with international understanding?

    (Extinct) Flightless Bird Day
Ok, so this one’s a little less though out. Could it encompass all unusual animals in need of our protection and study? With the bold dodo as a mascot, protesters and protectors rally in the heart of the city to save those little miracles of nature, off endangered and unknown.

    Tallship
Nautical in general, to help people understand our oceans and shorelines. Because land is only 30% of the world. Any ideas, Alice, MF? Begin to build a boat, to be launched in a year??

    Bicycle!
Ride a bike, close the roads to motors! Build a bike? Donate to Pedals4Progress?

    Typesetter’s Parade
In celebration of the visual arts, all of the tiny details that most people don’t see, like good font choice, graphic design, design in general, colors. I imagine a parade with people carrying big white signs on sticks, a single triumphant letter in black.

    Open Culture
To put the public domain in the public eye. It’s our culture, share it! See: Creative Commons.

    Interrobang
Use at least one unusual punctuation mark in your writing.

  12. Two days ago was “Write ‘Love’ on your Arm Day”! When I raised my hand in class, the teacher asked why LOVE was written on my arm in bold hot pink graffiti letters, and almost everyone in the room yelled, “IT’S WRITE LOVE ON YOUR ARM DAY!” Although perplexed, the teachers took part in it anyway.

  15. I now declare today High School Musical 3 Missed Showing Day.

    What?

I was going to see a showing of HSM 3 with two friends, but I never got to do it.

  16. 39~ Lucky you, otherwise we might have lost you to the horrors of HSM…….*shudders* I think the Bunnies are behind it, somehow.

Hmm, perhaps we’ll have a celebration of spotting historical and technical inaccuracies in popular movies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ratlines, epaulets, costume flaws, un-researched music, dubious death throes (bleeding at the mouth while dying of random causes), the list goes on!!
Yes, a month to be dedicated to enlightening the general publc of the gruesome horrors of inaccuracies found in popular movies, particularly those relating, but not limited, to history, ships, etc. ;)

  17. 41~ Umm………not right now….I’ll think about it though.

  18. What about having February as “sanity reverse month” ?
It means that sane=insane and insane=sane. During that month, trying to make gold out of salt, chloroform and your brothers old socks would be considered perfectly normal, while moving the lawn with a normal, standard lawnmower would land you in an asylum.
I hope that I’ve explained it well enough.

  19. I’m talking about the poor, unfortunate people who do serious things- like going to law school or studying. Besides, though we muse-bloggers have learned to think “outside the box”, not everyone knows how fun it is to be crazy !

  20. Could it be called Speculative Fiction Month instead of Science Fiction Month? That way it covers more ground.

Speaking of alphabets, next semester I’m taking a class in Heiroglyphs.

  21. 50–I’m a poor unfortunate person! I do serious things (like study occasionally) and pursue a vet med career! (won’t start the real seriousness for 3 1/2 more years, but….)

  22. Siesta Fiesta Day:
    some warm Sunday in May.
You read a good book or two and take as many short naps as possible, interspersed with loud, obnoxious partying, and tea.
You then eat macaroni (homemade) and cheese for dinner, and watch movies all night. Make sure to sleep through several of them.

  23. What about

Beatles Day (Honoring the Beatles, of course)

Geek Day (When all geeks converse in GEEKCode)

    Book Day (Obvious)

    Uhhhhh….. how bout’…. uhhh

Bunny Peace Day (One day of peace with the HPBs.

  27. Could someone post a summary of what we have for CERTAIN so far? (no more Koko and Urania please, if the real Muses choose to show up they can but fakers??? :? )

  28. (76) Nothing is for certain so far (except it’s safe to say that at least one month will celebrate science fiction). The final decisions will be made based on a combination of factors, including but not limited to: popular demand, Muserliness, creativity, and suitability for inspiring graphics.

  29. We should have a Random Quotes Appreciation Month- October, I think. For my birthday. And what about…hmmm…Ice Cream Month!
    Wheee! Fun!

  30. SFTDP, but since I was reading all the way through and I discovered that a Star Trek Month was out, we definitely should have a Science Fiction Month. And then a Fantasy Month

  31. we should have a “praise Canada” day. just kidding. *is only canadian and feels abit lonely*. what we should have though is a “muser day” where we apreciate all musers and muse related themes.

  33. 85 – Can someone explain Tallships? I have no idea what that is, so every time I read that phrase I think of this band piece we played in 7th grade, Entrance of the Tall Ships. Awesome alto sax part.

  34. Gah! We need a January topic, stat! The only January nomination so far, I think, is “Iceland Month”. Or we could have “Nitpickers’ Month'”. (post 40) And what colors will we have? The colors of the Icelandic flag are red, white, and blue, which is ironically American/British/many other countries. I don’t think Nitpickers have their own flag.

  37. 86- Big old sailboats.

Mythology, if a bit vague, is good with me.

I think that a family tree might be a good graphic idea.

  38. I like ebeth’s idea of Conspiracy Theory Month. We can make up theories about HPBs, Muses, the Kokonspiracy (duh), our schools, the media, and … *Twilight Zone music* The Government.
