in November 13th, 2008 @ 12:50post 0–actually, that’s debatable. The summer 2007 HP thread was the last all encompassing HP thread (and I use all encompassing loosely–DH talk was forbidden), but we have had the DH–spoilers allowed thread, also during the summer of 2007, and if you count the Trivia-Off threads (MissSwann, whatever happened to our competition?), we’ve had HP threads much more recently.
Anyway, HP is, of course, undeniably awesome. It is so much fun to go back and look at the HP v. 2007.1 thread, and look at all the comments posted disputing my theories, and then enjoy a [guilty and despicable] moment of sel-triumph [“ha, I was right, they were wrong!”].
No, seriously, it’s fun to look at all the theories (right and wrong) about what people thought would happen, and compare them to what really did happen. Of course, I will always feel a bit of pride in my theories explaining exactly how Snape was good (including his love for Lily Evans, and thus his ahtred of James), and how Harry was a Horcrux (including the tangent that Harry was related to Voldie), how RAB was Regulus A Black, and the Horcrux locket was the unopenable locket from Grimmauld, stolen either by Mundungus or Kreacher (or both, as it turned out). To be quite honest, I am still a bit in shock that pretty much all my theories, down to the most minute detail were actually right.
Seriously, when I read DH for the first time, and I got to the point where Harry was at Hogwarts, Snape had just been killed, I honestly didn’t believe there was enough space left for my theories to be proved correct, and I felt a bit sad (although happy too) that I wasn’t entirely spot on. But then, when I was reading Snape’s memories, and we are given proof of his loyalties (I’m afraid I started doubting him after he cut of George’s ear–strange, that–iw as loyal throughout the death of Dumbledore, but the minor loss of an ear…..), I was overjoyed (and I especially liked how the conversation overheard by Hagrid, that I used to argue Snape’s loyalties was present in its full,a nd that it went exactly as I argued), and then again when we found out about his love for Lily, and then, the bittersweet moment when we learned Harry was indeed a Horcrux. Ssweet, because it proved the last of my theories correct, but bitter and terrible, as it foretold the death of Harry. I truly believed that he was going to die, and the moment I read those words, Snape’s outrage that they had protected harry so long just to kill him, when I heard Harry’s fate sealed, I burst into tears, not just a few tears like during the other deaths, but full-fledged sobbing. I was truly crying my heart out, tears coursing down my cheeks,a nd I didn’t stop until the moment Voldemort killed him. And I only stopped then, because I was crying so much that my nose was all clogged, and well, disgusting as it sounds, I had snot running out of my nose (c’mon, I’m sure you’ve all cried so hard that your nose clogs and then starts running horribly), so I had to put down the book and go clean up, and by the time I finished wiping my nose and eyes, etc, I had stopped crying, in time to start the next chapter, where Harry speaks to Dumbledore.
Ummm, anyway, sorry, long post, wasn’t intentional…..but I just get carried away when i start talking HP!
1–Yeah, harry and Ron are boht cool, but I”m rather partial to Luna! (Gee, betcha guys would’ve never guessed that!)
Anyway, I better get off the computer–I have to head over to biolab pretty soon here…..

in November 13th, 2008 @ 12:51oooh, and SFTDP, but some of you might remember two years ago when I decided to start posting all the differences between the British editions and the US editions? Well, sad to say, although I have read all of the HP books in the British edition (with the exception of DH–haven’t had time yet), I never even got all the way through PS comparing differences…….Too time consuming.

It was just moderated surprisingly quick, given the slow moderation times of late…..6–I haven’t made up my mind about DH yet. I both like it and dislike it. The deaths saddened me, obviously, but then, you cannot wage a full-out war without many, many people getting killed. As far as five–at the time it came out, I hated it. I hated Harry’s attitude, his moody, sullen jerk behavior. And yet, ironically, this was the book that started my obsession. Before five, I was just a typical reader of the series–I liked them, I had read them all once–but I was not fanatical about them. But after the fifth, I was so pissed with Harry’s behavior, that I started daydreaming about how I would’ve acted if I were Harry, which led to me starting a very crappy HP fanfic some of you will remember, which in turn led to me beginning an HP trivia game (still a work in progress, but getting ever closer), which in turn led to me reading and rereading the books, and just becoming all out obsessed. And then, when Muse had that contest where we were supposed to write about Snape’s loyalties, I wrote my first ever HP theory, which in turn set of a flood of other theories…….

I can’t believe Warner Bros. MOVED THE DATE of the 6th movie! I mean, c’mon, no more people are going to come see it in the summer than in November. It would be ONE WEEK until it’s release, if they hadn’t CHANGED IT. All of the hard core HP fans would come to the movie whatever the date was. Grrrrr…..

Oh, twilight (the soap opera of the book world *vomits*) is having it’s movie premiere at Thanksgiving, we can’t possibly have Potter then, too. Morons. Not that the movie was any good, mind you. And my lightning bolt clip on earrings gave me bruises–literally.

Aaargh, I was so ticked off when that happened! Especially when my Twilight-obsessed friends were all excited about the movie and didn’t think much of the moving of the Harry Potter movie. My homeroom last year was the science lab, and we had two big stationary desks, the teacher let us pick our own spots, and thus: girls at one table, boys at the other. I wanted to schlep all my stuff over to the boys table that month. Alas, I couldn’t. I was forced to learn everything about the movie and the books and of course the actors from my friend.
I can’t wear robes in the summer! Neither can anyone else! What were they thinking???? I could only wear my authentic replica of Dumbledore’s hat.

in August 23rd, 2009 @ 21:48I didn’t do full costume. That is, unlike for the release of DH, I didn’t dress like Luna. I did, however, deck myself out in HP apparel. I wore my HP socks (I think, I can’t remember, I may not have), my Gryffindor T-shirt–very awesome, not sure how to describe it. It’s got the Gryffindor crest on the front, with little “paint” splotches dotting the front around it, and red and gold stripes on the longish short sleeves. Over that, I wore my HP jean jacket (kids size, so the sleeves were rolled up to my elbows). It has Snitch emblems on the buttons, and says HP above the left pocket. The back once had a Snitch design in rhinestones, but it was missing long before I ever got my hands on it (courtesy of the thrift store my mom works at). I had my HP Nimbus 2000 pin on the jacket, along with two non-HP, but fantasy related pins: A wizard and a dragon, both a bronzeish color. I was wearing my silver fake-diamond studded lightning bolt necklace, my glittery gold plastic lightning bolt clip-on earrings (bruises, I tell you, bruises), my HP charm bracelet, and two red and gold braided ribbons in my hair (probably not visible, the rest of my hair probably ended up covering ’em up).
’twas a bit warm, as it was a very nice day, but I liked it. I decided I looked positively cute.
My sister said I looked stupid.

I think the seventh book was the best one. JKR only killed minor characters, and I thought the best part in all the books was when Voldemort used the avada kedavra on Harry and it only killed the horcrux part of him.

in November 13th, 2008 @ 16:4211–well, I think I seriously disagree with your idea of minor. I mean, I had heard before I read it, that she would kill only two main characters. If you ask me, nearly everybody she killed was a major character. As follows, marked with major and minor:
Charity Burbage: minor, never mentioned by name previously
Hedwig the owl: not human, but major all the same
Alastor Moody: um, I wouldn’t exactly call him minor; he featured hugely in GoF (Crouch as Moody counts, to establish him as a semi-major character)
Rufus Scrimgeour: minor
Gregorovitch: (presumably killed during the course of the book, based on Harry’s flashes of Voldie’s thoughts) minor
Gellert Grindelwad: see note for Gregorovitch; minor, I suppose, although quite a hot topic in the 7th book
Bathilda Bagshot: minor
Ted Tonks: minor
Dirk Cresswell: minor
Gornuk the goblin: minor
Peter Pettigrew: technically minor, but you argue elsewise (not that anyone cares about him)
Dobby: major, in MHO
Vincent Crabbe: major; no argument
Fred Weasley: no debate–he is major
Nymphadora Tonks: major, again IMHO
Remus John Lupin: major (c’mon, he taught all PoA)
Colin Creevey: could be argued either way; semi-major (he featured heavily in CoS)
Severus Snape: again, no debate–major
Nagini: not human, but semi-major
Antonin Dolohov: minor
Bellatrix Lestrange: minor, I s’pose
Voldemort: definitely major
So, admittedly, many are minor (11–some Death Eater’s, so nobody cares anyway); some semi-major (3); and then several major: 8.
so, although many are minor, it is undeniable that some of them were major (you said that she ONLY killed minor characters). But, despite your views on some I labelled major, it cannot be argued that Fred, Crabbe, and Voldie are major, and although two of those no one cares about…..
But personally, Tonks, Lupin, Dobby, etc are all major characters (as labelled above), and so it is untrue to say she only killed minor characters. The deaths of minor characters would not ahve brought me to tears, as did Hedwig, Lupin, Tonks, Fred, Colin, Snape, and Harry’s deaths. (and yes, I know Harry doesn’t count, as he was resurrected, but still…..)

I think part of it is that it was so different–Harry and co. weren’t attending school, rather roaming the countryside looking for Horcruxes. To be quite honest, I don’t understand why Dh was chosen to be split in two, when much of it was the same (jumping from place to place, Ron whining, etc). It would’ve made much more sense for them to’ve split HBP, as it was much more varied. With DH, huge chunks could be cut without significantly altering anything. HBP–no.
But then, I have to like it, as it is the final chapter in a 7 book 10 year saga. And it does have its own charm, despite being so different. I dunno, I think I need to reread it (again? I can’t remember if I only read it the once, or if I’ve read it twice…..) to really make up my mind.

in November 13th, 2008 @ 17:46harry potter! i think i might have read tose bookd a few too many times. the last time i tried to reread the series i couldn’t get started. it was really weird because i usually like reading them. i highly dislike the fourth one. it was too harry-centered. all these things had a very low chance of happening did. and i have seen that movie way too many times. i like the 3rd book and movie best. i noticed that the 4th movie is mostly brown and the 5th movie is mostly green. i was planning on seeing the 6th movie (green?) on thanksgiving but no, they have to move the release date because of the stupid twilight movie. wich i will probably end up seeing on thanksgiving instead unless there is something else i should see (ideas?) speaking of twilight, i really despise edward. he asn an abusive boyfreind and should be removed from the story. but then bella would start being all deprssed. which would e bad. because then she would start acting weird like she did in new moon wich i didnt like. back to HP. i tend to not like the even numbered books but i am starting to like the 2nd one more. the fifth one spends too much time being mad at each other. i am going to stop ranting now.

18- Hm, but DH was like a giant scavenger hunt- if you’re missing a part, the whole plot kind of doesn’t make sense. I suppose much of the roaming-aimlessly sections and/or pointless deadends like the Ministry of Magic scene or Griffin’s hollow could be edited out, but you really need all of that deathly hallow, snape!drama, and horcrux chasing, in my opinion. The core of HPB, however, is just Voldie’s past, winding down to the horcruxes, and harryginny!drama. And DH just seems more fitting to cut into two- it’s the last film, after all.
But then there is the need to consider the fact that another movie means more profits for WB, eh?!?!? And we all know how true that is to the spirit of HP, don’t we?

The last few chapters were phenomenal (except for the epilogue, which sounded almost as fanfiction-y as Breaking Dawn), but the middle parts were pretty monotonous at times. I was also unnerved that it was so different, and that we didn’t see much of any characters except the trio. I really liked all the backround information on Dumbledore, though.
Deaths I cried for: Hedwig, Hagrid (no, he didn’t die, but I thought he did like four times), Dobby. And I sobbed when Harry was walking into the forest to his assumed death. But I never liked Moody much, and as for all the deaths in the battle scene, they were like:
Fight! Fight! Fight! Bang, Fred’s dead. Revenge! Run! Oh look, there are Tonks and Lupin. Bang, bang, bang! Fight! Run! Oh, and Colin Creevy! (Most pointless death of all time. I didn’t even notice until I reread the book.) Bang, bang, fight, fight! I must go commit suicide!Moving much to quickly for anything at all to sink in, essentially.

Not a problem for me!22–yeah, I cried for every death except Moody’s. And I cried for the last Hagrid death, wehn he waas carried off into the forest. So, yeah, I cried for Hedwig, Dobby, Fred, Lupin, Tonks, Snape, Colin, Hagrid, Harry. Partly, I think I cried so much because I was determine that I would show some emotion and cry for everyone, to make up for not crying during any of the others…..but honestly, I was just really tired, and thus pretty much anything could’ve triggered tears.
There are still some spots that, no matter how many times I reread them, they still make me cry–Dobby’s death, and the scene where Harry resurrects his family, Sirius, and Lupin. When he is talking to Remus about his son, and how he’s sorry he never got to actually truly be a father, it just breaks my heart, and I start crying……

The tales of beetle and the bard is coming out in December. She will just keep writing those books and people will buy them.

in November 14th, 2008 @ 16:5231–I rather liked the epilogue. It wrapped things up nicely, and honestly, it nearly moved me to tears, especially the scene where Harry told Albus Severus that he is named after the two most bravest men Harry has ever known. It was so–touching. Sorry, getting misty-eyed thinking about it.
As far as Beedle the Bard, she originally only wrote 7 copies–six were given to various people/organizations that were important to the completion of HP, and the seventh was auctioned off to give to charity. It was bought by Amazon, I believe, and they got permission to publish it. I don’t think she wrote it with the intention of mass publicating it, only having made 7 copies–each hand done, or someting, I believe.
As far as HP the next generation. I truly don’t believe JKR is going to make any books about Harry’s kids, or Harry and co. in middle age. Sure, there will be numerous fanfics starting where the books ended, but I don’t think there will be an official Hp the next generation book. JKR has said numerous times that if she does another Harry Potter it will be a so-called Harry Potter encyclopedia, detailing life-history of characters that wasn’t published in the books. Sort of all her background and notes on everybody. That sort of thing. Personally, I hope she does write that–i would love to know more about all the characters lives before HP.
And if she did change her mind and write about “Hp the next generation”, well, I won’t mind. I’m sure it wouldn’t be as good as the original HP–sequels never are, but I would buy them and devour them. I desperately crave more HP, HP I haven’t read.

ok, that was cryptic, and sounds like I did something really horrible, which isn’t really true.
I just pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard off of Amazon.com. I relaly oughtn’t’ve, I really should’ve just got the standard edition, which is about ten dollars, instead of spending money that I really don’t have, or that I have but should be contributing to my education, (the collector’s edition is $100), but it looked so freakin’ awesome….
So, yeah, I had a $30 gift card for Amazon.com, and as a new member, I got this free trial thing to AmazonPrime, so they scratched the $12 shipping and handling, so it “only” costs me $70, but still. That is a huge amount, and I relaly shouldn’t’ve just spent it, not to mention I’m still abit in shock–that is the first time I’ve ever bought anything offline, hell, I think it is the first time I’ve ever used my debit card, and it is definitely the most money I’ve ever spent in one place for, well, probably 8 yrs? (I am not counting college tuition in this, as obviously it is in the thousands of dollars).
The last time I actually splurged and bought myself somethng seriously expensive was when I was 9 or 10, and I decided to spend my Christmas money on a GameBoy Color (god, those things are obsolete now……) and a Super Mario Bros. cartirdge.
Anyway, yeah, I am a bit in shock, that I actually did that, and am feeling a bit guilty……And since they didn’t tell me when I palced the order that they were sold out (they are only making 100,000 copies of the Collector’s Edition, ever), presumably they are not sold out, and I will actually get it……
And supposedly I will receive it on the day of release (Dec 4),a lathough given how slow mail service seems to be here at college, I am doubtful. And they ahd there whole stupid clause, that the delivery on the release date only applies to people not in Alaska, Hawaii, territories of the US, or foregin countries. yeah, I hate al the stupid special deals that never apply to my beloved state, so fortunately I’m at college in the lower 48 right now, and oh, god, I just realized Dec 4 is the day of my next calculus test…..
Well, at least I will (hopefully) ahve something positive to look forward to taht day–maybe, just maybe, when I return from my test I will have a very special package awaiting me……oh god, I really can’t believe I ordered the Collector’s Edition…..
And I am babbling, so I am really gong to shut up now, and my mother is probably going to kill me (or, more like, my father, as he is very against ordering anything offline), but mom because she will not exactly be happy that I “wasted” the money on the collector’s edition. But it’s her fault, I hadn’t even known there was a collector’s edition until I read her email, and hadn’t even been planning on ordering offline, just finding a way to get to a bookstore that day……
But then she had to go and send an email reading, “according to this website if you preorder it will arrive on the release date, don’t think you want to splurg for the collector’s edition at $100. anyway, don’t know if you will get the actual day of release, but it says you will”.
so, of course, I went to the website, saw the collector’s edition, looked at it, and of course I had to get it……and dammit I shouldn’t’ve, and I am going to shut up and leave now, cuz nobody is really interested in my random insane babbling……

I mean, given that the books she has done, except for the HP ones themselves, have all had the money given to charitiy, i don’t really think she’s that money hungry. Tales of Beedle the Bard, Quidditch Through the Ages, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, all had the proceeds donated to charity. JKR made absolutely no money off them.
So, personally, I don’t think that, one the small chance hse does another HP series, that it will be for money.

(I think they had it on the ad board at teh Quidditch World Cup). “A risk with every mouthful?” Yeah, well, I was reading this one HP fanfic a while back, and……Snape had a pair of Bertie Bott’s Beans boxers, reading……well, yeah. Actually, the main reason I found it so funny, was it was just so totally unexected. But yeah, like I said, that’s just LtL weird humor for you (I fully blame my mother–I inherited her twisted sense of humor).

She called Carlisle ‘Cardizzle’ throughout the whole thing, and Esme was ‘you sexy bee-yotch’. And it was rather graphic… very disturbing.

In the high school I’m going to next year, every 2 months they have a cosplay day, and I can’t decide whether to be Tonks or Hermione. I’m leaning towards Tonks though.

I did read it during my lunch break, though……As I was cleaning a kennel right after lunch, I was contemplating what I had just read, the Snithc with the words, “I open at the close.” Actually, I think my first fleeting and soon forgotten thought on that was it meant it opened when Harry died, which was (almost) right. But I was contemplating the words, saying them over and over in my mind, with all sorts of different emphasis.
And, personally, I kinda think anybody who bans them, no matter what the reason, is something of a crazed person…..

I know people were talking about fanfics earlier so that is how this has relevance. I have a friend who is convinced that Luna and Harry should have been together. Finaly, I think Imanaged to get her less attached to that idea. Harry and Ginny are both really strong spirited characters and are meant to be together. Luna is kind of tuned out of the real world. it would be really hard to have anykind of relationship with luna that wasn’t friendship because of her nature. I mean, can you truly imagine having a down to earth conversation with luna? I can’t. so yeah. Luna and Harry are a no go.
my favorite characters are ginny, malfoy, snape, voldemort and bellatrix.

JKR- you are the best character creator since Brian Jacques!got that out.

Snape, as said above, was a perfect shot. Though originally an important character, his persona was built very well and made DH the book it is.
Voldie- also excellent, though it was a bit…”BAM! Voldy’s DEAD! MWAHAHAHAHA!” type thing at the end.

in November 23rd, 2008 @ 20:0878 – I used to read fanfics a lot, before they were blocked on my computer. My opinion on ships varys on what genre and quality fics I’ve read. Like, say, if I read a fic that stays in character for all characters involved, is not jumpy, and has good grammar, I would begin to sympathize. After an hour of reading good H/Hr I can be totally into that ship. If I start reading a really horrible one, I will abhore the ship.
I finished DH in 6 HOURS! Whoo-hoo. Midnight to six a.m.! I thought the deaths were entirely reasonable, but was not expecting Snape/Lily. I was like, whooaaah. But back to death, there were some pretty insane theories on who was going to the chopping block before DH came out, like:
Ron – Harry’s best friend (I didn’t believe this one personally; Ron is the comedy relief. I didn’t think any of the Golden theory was going to die)
Mr. and/or Mrs. Weasley – Sudo parents to Harry; also blood traitors and known Order members
Tonks – There was a saint named Nymphadora who was murdered by a roman emprorer named Severus. (Correct in death, wrong in murderer)
Neville – In attempt to avenge his parents
Remus – Last of the (good) marauders; basicly a give-in.
Dobby was actually considered a pretty safe bet on living.
Harry – Kill Voldy or die trying
I was totally surprised when Bellatrix was killed by Mrs. Weasly. I thought it was going to be Bellatrix.
Another thing, has it ever occurred to JK that Teddy Lupin and Victoire Weasly are actually related?
No, seriously, and once Harry married Ginny, he was related to Draco Malfoy.
Since Sirius said he was related to Mr. Weasley and secondly to Mrs. Weasley by marriage, then all their children are related to Sirius. Sirius has cousins Bellatrix (Lestrange) , Andromeda (Tonks), and Narcissa (Malfoy). So any children Andromeda or Nacissa have are related to Sirius. Tonks are Draco are cousins. So Teddy Lupin is related to Sirius who is related to Bill’s kid, Victoire. Yeah, and once Remus marries Tonks and Harry marries Ginny, all the (good) marauders are related. Wow.
Harry and Voldemort are actually very distantly related too. Ignotus Peverall and the second brother. I find it funny that Voldy’s really scared of the dead, yet the brother he’s related to had the stone that could bring people back to the living.
In all reality, I wasn’t expecting Tonks and Lupin to have a kid. It seemed that Lupin would wait a while to marry her if he did, or Tonks would end up proposing to him.

It was awesome. They saw the modified memory of slughorn and tom, and Dumbledore was like, “This is the most important memory I’ve collected. It’s also a LIE!”
I just have two complaints about it. First, it confirmed that HBP is coming out in July.
Secondly, there was this one part in the library where this one girl was looking at harry, and it was like,
Hermione: *snaps her fingers in harry’s face* “Hey! She’s trying to get your attention because she thinks you’re the Chosen One!”
“But I am the Chosen One.”It makes his ego seem a bit bigger than before or in the books.

So we go, get the book, and head to the cashier. And as we’re entering the line, my dad realizes he doesn’t have his wallet or credit card. And we can’t call my mom for her number.

ok, some mild spoilers, seriously minor, whining about typos in the collector’s edition (one would think they could proof it, given the outrageous amount of money it costs, and the fact that they will never make any more but the 100,000), that I would like cross-referenced against the standard edition, to see if it is only a flaw in the CE.
1. Dumbledore’s commentary on “Hopping Pot.” Does you version read “survived the flames flames to which they were so often consigned.” Because, I think the second flames is a mistake….
2. Is Beatrix’s book Toadstool tales or Toadstood Tales? In mine it is Toadstood, but when the woman was reading from the standard edition last night, I’m sure she said Toadstool, but whether this was her misreading, or me mishearing, or it being a discrepancy between the two, I don’t know.
3. In Dumbledore’s commentary on “Fountain of Fair Fortune” there is a blatantly mistake, one I’m not quite sure how they managed. It reads Prmando Dippet, instead of Armando Dippet, and everyone knows that the former headmaster of Hogwarts was named Armando, and also that the “p” key and the “a” key are at completely opposite ends of the keyboard.
4. In “The Tale of Three Brothers”, it reads, “Tnd so Death took the second brother for his own.” As everyone knows, “tnd” is not a word, and it should read “And”. Don’t know how they screwed that up, either….
ok, now on to what could be considered spoilers, as I think that is all the typos (but I”m not sure, I don’t remember for certain).
so, MINOR SPOILERS INSUE–that is, I’m posting a couple of my favorite quotes, nothing that really gives anything away, but if you want tos ave the hilarity for when you’re reading the book, skip the folloiwng.
So, MINOR Beedle the Bard SPOILERS AHEAD
1. oh, random note, for whatever reason, Beatrix Bloxam calls to mind “Beatrix Potter”, and that was all I could think of last night at the “party”, and as I was reading that commentary today…..
2. This exchange marked the beginning of Mr. Malfoy’s long campaign to have me removed from my post as Headmaster of Hogwarts, and of mine to have him removed from his position as Lord Voldemort’s Favourite Death Eater.
I found this quite funny, partly because the ending was not what I thought he was going to say–I thought he was going to say, “and of mine to have him removed from his position as a member of the Board of Governors.” or something like that.
3. “….not to mention ghastly details of the dreadfully unsavory affair of my uncle Nobby, the local hag and a sack of Bouncing Bulbs.” This had me choking, trying to decide if I wanted to imagine details of that encounter, pondering over double meanings that are probably fairly obvious for any teen or adult.
And the continuation of the thought, “….so deeply traumatised was I that I developed the habit of sleepwalking back to the same keyhole [where she overheard the story, after her “little ear fell against the keyhole” by “accident”] every night….” Slepwalking, yeah, right, more like she had a thirst for more adult gossip….4. “It was rumoured, however, that she actually discovered him in the act of fondling some Horklumps, which she found deeply shocking.” So freakin’ funny, that. And the footnote: “Horklumps are pink, bristly mushroom-like creatures. It is very difficult to see why anyone would want to fondle them.”
5. and of course, the required mention of Aberforth and goats: “This frequently led to arguments with my younger brother, Aberforth, whose favourite story was “Grumble the Grubby Goat.”
oh, and just another random comment–I think JKR’s handwritten intro, reproduced from the original manuscript (and, I think, unique to the Collector’s Edition), was one of my favourite parts. Despite the fact that, at first glance, her handwriting looks very scrawly and hard to read, it is surprisingly easy to follow, except for the occasional word, and there is something oddly, wonderfully pleasing about reading her script. I like it, I think it may have been my favourite part. And of course, some of Dumbledore’s delightful comments.
ok, now on to some REAL spoilers. Hear (read that)? A COUPLE OF NOT ENTIRELY MINOR, BUT ALSO NOT DREADFULLY SERIOUS, SPOILERS ENSUE! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK–SORRY, GAPA
actually, GAPA, really, I feel a bit bad, and although I don’t think you would take this option, due to the bad precedent, I sweaer upon my beautiful expensive collector’s edition of Beedle the Bard, that I do not say anything bad in the following two paragraphs, nor do I provide any sort of contact info, etc, and so if this is going to be a spoiler for you, dear GAPA, as you haven’t read BtB, you can skip it. cuz I really feel bad about spoiling it for you………I swear there’s nothing bad.
ok, the “Hairy Heart”, isn’t there an actual Muggle fairy tale that involves a wizard or some such thing (some evil guy), who has his heart locked away in some chest so that he can’t be killed, and the hero/heroine goes in, find it, destroys it, and lives Happily Ever After, and saves everyone/everything? It’s bugging me, as I swear there is one….
Also, “Babbity Rabbity”, well for starters, it wasn’t what I expected, although I”m not entirely sure what I expected. This one, though, I think reminded me quite a bit of “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, where some trickster fools the king, except instead of convincing him he’s wearing clothes when in fact he’s naked, he convinces him that he is doing magic….But maybe the similarity is in my head, but that was my first thought as I read the portion where the charlatan is going on about how he just has to keep practising, and then eventually he will do magic….

I loved the footnote on Dumbledore’s comments on the “Three Brothers” story. “No woman has ever claimed to own the Elder Wand. Make of that what you will.” (or something very close to that. I only got to read the thing once before someone else pounced on it.)

How shocking, you pay 10 times as much money to get a superior work, and the editing in it is substandard. A 4 year old could have caught those errors.
1. It has “flames flames” which to me seems an error, not just how JKR wrote it.
2. It is “Toadstood Tales” instead of “Toadstool Tales”. Whether this is a typo, or the “americanized” Toadstood to Toadstool, I do not know. Because, as was blatantly obvious, flipping through the standard edition in the campus bookstore, the standard edition was americanized from the original british. How utterly shocking. Not.

I confess myself a bit enraged with Amazon for marketing a super special collector’s edition, and then not even bothering to make sure that it was thoroughly edited.
And I could’ve sworn the implications on Amazon.com when describing the CE implied that the replica of JKR’s intro in the original was unique to the CE, that it was not present in any form in the standard edition. Not true. It is present in the standard, just as typed text, instead of a replica of her handwriting. And maybe this is what Amazon meant, but it is not the implication I came away with.

Mistakes like those can make books more valuable, however. Because they tend to be corrected in subsequent editions, they can prove that a book is a first printing — useful information when you’re dealing with old, rare volumes. (“ToBtB” will be old someday.)

So, next question. Would one of you with the standard edition please post a brief description of all the illustrations in your book? Because according to amazon, the CE was supposed to have 10 illustrations no in the standard, but I saw several familiar pictures in the standard when flipping through it, and nothing jumped out at me as having been in the Ce and not the SE, so……I’m beginning to doubt Amazon really told us anything accurate. Not that I wouldn’t have still wanted the CE, but the fact that it seems they may have been lying enrages me. I would do the research myself, but I’m not lugging my CE to the bookstore and sitting there poring over the SE.

It was bought by Amazon, and they got permission to publish it for the masses, and it was released yesterday, December 4.

I was quite pleased to see that the spelling and such was left intact in the CE’s, although I suppose it would ahve been hard to do it otherwise!

Also, Chicago is the only midwestern location, and I highly doubt it’ll ever go to Alaska, so Chicago might be my only chance to go, depending upon where the other locations are…..
I’m thinking road trip over labor day weekend come September. Y’know, catch a bus ride to Chicago (long drive, ‘though short flight). I think mom said it would be around $30 round trip, which actually doesn’t sound too bad…..*desperately wants to go*

It’s just HORRID- they’re some of the best characters in the book! I don’t really get why all antagonists have to monologue before doing something awful. I mean, it does give an opportunity for the protagonist to escape, but it gets a bit predictable. Lupin reminds me somehow of my English/Music teacher.

It’s a little… unnesesary in my opinion. I understand doing the king’s cross death bit at the end, but all this other stuff? This is a children’s movie,WB. I’m glad they’re trying to include older audiences, but I’m not sure this is the right way to do it. If this goes through, It will probably end up being rated R, which would be okay, because then they would be able to go into full detail on scenes like the snake coming out of Bathilda, but then they would loose a large chunk of the younger fans. I think releasing two films, one rated PG or PG-13 and one rated R would be a good idea, but it may add a lot of extra work. It would bring in more money though. WB would only have to advertise for one movie, and people would go. Hardcore fans would probably go to both, boosting sales there as well. This may be a bit much though, seeing as they are already splitting it into two films. I wish I were the director. Oh, the changes I would make….
I also think that after these films are out , a few years should pass and someone should make them again. Completely redone, now that we have learned from the mistakes of throwing a 10-minute cheese-fest into the end of CoS and leaving out crucial lockets from OotP. Then they could have the original trio (and Malfoy) play the grown-up versions of themselves.
(end of rant)on a different note, today at quizbowl there was a lightning round and one of the options was “wizards and muggles”.(A lightning round is where there are 10 short questions on one subject that are awnsered by the chosen team shouting them out, without buzzing in or anything) Everyone on our team (‘cept the capitan) seemed to be a pretty diehard Potter fan, so we could have gotten them even if yours truly wasn’t rattling off all the names, first and last names (except proffesor Binns, who doesn’t have a first name mentioned in the books). They all seemed easy to get if you had read the series once, except for maybe Alice Longbottom.

in December 2nd, 2009 @ 21:54Oh, there’s not necessarily anything wrong with midgets. It’s just, I don’t typically find guys shorter than me all that attractive. Especially when there looks aren’t all that spectacular to begin with.
I mean, even just of the kids in HP, Radcliffe is one of the less attractive ones. Tom Felton, Rupert Grint, James and Oliver Phelps, and probably several others that I can’t think of right off are way hotter. And if you include faculty/other adults? Alan Rickman, Thewliss (guy who plays Lupin, can never remember the actor’s first name), Gary Oldman’s not too bad, either, ummmmmm. Oh, David Tennant, can’t forget him. He’s just as hot as evil Death Eater Barty Crouch Jr as he is as The Doctor.
And speaking of hot non HP guys who are way hotter than Radcliffe:

Four years of wearing a modern day equivalent of a corset. Not the most enjoyable thing I’ve ever done.)

in December 3rd, 2009 @ 00:01I am quite willing to admit that my knowledge of HP is not infallible, especially these days. However, I do think I would recall it mentioning him naked in the book. The closest I recall is when the other six “Potters” are stripping to change clothes to look like proper HPs–the implication was that they might have been naked, or at least very scantily dressed.
Horcrux scene, in the Forest of Dean: He strips to his underwear to dive into the lake. Skip to the images the Horcrux projects to Ron: Harry and Hermione images snogging, yes, but it does not once state they are naked.
When Voldie “kills” Harry and he meets Dumbledore: Ok, I guess he is initially naked here (I sit corrected
), but given that it’s very misty, there’s really no need for anything more to be shown than, say, was shown in the bath scene in GoF.I’ve got nothing against nudity in movies, really, I just get irritated when producers/directors/whomever finds it necessary to throw in pointless naked sequences. Like Lake Placid 2, whre they had to show the girls going skinny dipping before the giant crocs got ’em–thanks, but having the girls topless really added nothing to the scene; Shark Attack Three (horrid movie, JB’s the only one in it who can act) the unnecessary skinny dipping scene before the shark attacked, or the graphic shower/bed scene between the two main characters later on. Ok, well, I suppose I didnt’ mind the latter scene that much, it did have JB in it, even if the camera was neglecting to show us much of anything of him, and more than I cared to see of the girl. Or Arachnophobia: The scene in the shower where the spider jumps on the girls face, than slides down the front of her very naked body…..Again, really not necessary.
Which brings up anothe rpoint: Why is it always the girls they show naked? If they’ve gotta shove naked sequences into movies, why can’t it be hot guys, instead of women?
And yes, it would be a guy in HP, but, well, HP is as much a children’s movie as it is an adult movie: They can easily convey nudity without actually showing any real nudity. Again, like the bath scene in GoF.
Eh, whatever. The movie sucks, regardless. What difference does it make if they throw in a scene or two of naked unattractive midget. Still sucks.

5’6″, that’s an inch and a quarter shorter than me, about the same height as my mom–and my mom would be taller than that, if it weren’t for the shrinkage that starts to come with age, the fact that she has scoliosis (as do I….Hmmmm, I’d be even more than an inch and a quarter taller than him if it weren’t for the dratted scoliosis)…..Perhaps not short enough to truly be termed a midget, but definitely short for a guy.

in December 4th, 2009 @ 15:48It’s weird that I’ve never posted here before considering the fact that I’m an avid HP fan…I guess I just never looked even though I knew the threads were here.
Anyway, muselover I’m pretty sure you’re right Harry was naked when Voldemort “killed” him but like you pointed out he was clothed almost right away. Personally I don’t think that a minor second or two of nudity would ruin the film but because it’s so short and (might?) make the ratings higher I just don’t see the point. Besides Harry doesn’t absolutely have to be naked for the story line to still make sense and all and it doesn’t take anything away from the film.
The idea that the series will be (kinda sorta) over with the 7th film coming out is so depressing! I always looked forward to the new films and after these two parts are over it will be finished! I hope JKR writes some more, even if it’s not about Harry. I think she is planning to though but Harry Potter will always be Harry Potter…
My favorite characters are Ginny and Snape. Ron is awesome too although I dunno, it was kind of frustrating to read about him like when he acted like a total jerk in the GoF which lowers his rankings by my opinion. oh my gosh I wanted to kill him then! I loved the GoF and I know it wouldn’t have been the same story if Ron and Harry hadn’t gotten into the fight but it still annoyed me how thick Ron was. (Once again, he wouldn’t be Ron if he was smart. But still.)

Uhm, no. If I had to pick one fault, it sure as cake wouldn’t be the lack of sexual content. That doesn’t even rate on my scale of why the HP films are (to me) unpopular. It’s there utter lack (especially recently) of staying true to the books. And “gratuitous scenes of depraved wizard-on-wizard action” would only make them even less true to the book, and thus even less appealing.

Later on the author indicated that en believed that the Yates’ desire to add nude scenes was quite likely due to the appeal of such in twilight….Gah. If that….book which does not deserve to be called a book is responsible for Yates ruining the books even more than he has already done with OotP and HBP, well, let’s just say that another reason to despise twilight. And to wish for a lighter every time you walk past a twi-crap display.

in December 10th, 2009 @ 18:41Which is exactly the problem…..Everyone forgets that the fanbase for the movies is the people who read the books–and that those of us who read the books desire the movies to be 100% loyal to said books.
This is one instance, where I think if someone decided to do remakes of the HP movies, they couldn’t possible be worse, only better. I mean, if someone actually was able to do a remake down the line, it would be somebody who grew up in the HP era, who is a mad HP fanatic, and who would have hated what was done with the original HP movies.

in April 12th, 2011 @ 20:39I’m a Hufflepuff. Huffelpuffs are seriously underrated in the books. I mean, one of their defining traits is loyalty, which is also shared by nearly all the main characters, and yet Hufflepuffs are derided as ‘duffers’.
I probably wouldn’t say no if I was put in Ravenclaw, though. I don’t really think I’m smart enough, and my personality matches quite a bit less.

But I love Ravenclaw’s colors and mascot, and their common room …
There should really be 10 houses, since almost everyone I’ve asked seems to be a combination. I’ve yet to meet a Slytherpuff, though.
I read a Wild Mass Guess on TVTropes that since ‘Puffs are loyal and trustworthy, they learn magic too dark to be entrusted to a Slytherin, so they can become super-top-secret highest-level Ministry Aurors. Like a lot of WMGs, this makes a disturbing amount of sense.

177: I quite agree. I really don’t understand how anyone could say that loyalty and fairness are less important than the other qualities–let alone JKR. And yes, she specifically said she thought that bravery was the most important–more important than ‘kindheartedness.’ I’m sure she has a good reason, so does anyone have an idea of what it is?

I personally am a Ravenclaw. My school colors are red and gold though, and so is our Quidditch gear.
I miss Quidditch but it should be starting again soon! Wooo!

When I read the King’s Cross scene I was thinking, “How the cake is that going to work in the movie and will I have to close my eyes or not?” I don’t want any sort of scenes like that because that’s Not How The Book Should Be Interpreted. Maybe in King’s Cross scene, upper half, yeah. Nothing of much importance happened below there unless I am mistaken. But CAKE why did they have to put that scene in Part 1 WHY WHY WHY it was not necessary it WASN’T and there were approximately forty two trillion ways to not have it like that but NO. I don’t LIKE those scenes. *pouts*

Those movies just make me really mad and grouchy for the next several days because they always find some way to cake it up. Everyone sort of expects me to watch and/or squee over the movies because they know what a big HP fan I am; I’m really only a fan of the books, and I’m getting annoyed with Certain People about it.
AL-I completely agree with you about book seven. I can’t explain it, but I love it.

in May 29th, 2011 @ 18:15My birthday (July 10) is near the release date, so I think I’m going to ask my parents for tickets and go really early to see if we can get the best seats. I arrived right on time for DH1 and could barely find a seat.
They were almost too true to the book on some parts in DH1 and in other parts I was just thinking, “What does that have to do with anything” Like the Harry/Hermione dancing. It wasn’t terrible, it just wasn’t expected and some scenes could definitely have been cut/replaced with better scenes.
I consider myself a RavenPuff, with no emphasis on either, although online quizzes tend to consider me a GryffinPuff.
Book 7 was my second favorite book (GoF was my fav) so I have high hopes for the final section.
