I’m going to see the movie eventually. Is it really creepy?
1-No doubt.
This should be a very popular thread. And I won’t come rant about harry potter here, don’t worry!
I saw it last nite, omg, its nothing like da book, but the death eaters are oober creepy and it’s entertainting. Harry has oober hormones and is super emo, and is boyfriend of cho. Im suprisd that no-one else is commentatering on this!!!!!! Yeah, go see da movie.
UMBRIDGE IS EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HERMIONE IS 15BAJILLION TIMES COOLER THAT UMBRIDGE IS EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!GINNY KICKS BUTT!!!!TONKS ALSO KICKS BUTT!!!!!!
(redtailedhawk, how can you NOT rant about harrypotter!?!?!?!?)
I liked Luna.
On what day *can* we begin to discuss the book? Naturally, I wouldn’t want to spoil it for anyone, especially the poor GAPAs, who would have to moderate my comment.
But, I’ll probably have it finished before sunrise on the 21st.
I CANNOT WAIT.
6-Lol.
I’m going to see the movie tomorrow, and I’m currently rereading the book…5th one, I mean. I can’t wait till the 7th book comes out! My dad and I think that, in the final scene, Harry’s going to die while killing Voldemort…but that’s just an idea, of course.
I’m super excited for book 7. Which I should really preorder.
As for the movie… I’ll see it eventually.
Wow. I’m so unenthusiastic that I have no place here.
We usually see the Harry Potter movies with a friend of ours in the big theater, and then later our parents go and see it in the little theater with couches. (No couches for us, sadly, because we’re kids and can’t go upstairs, which I think is something like a bar. They serve beer. But at least we still get to eat pizza.) But the “big” theater really isn’t very big at all (but we miss the half-hour of commercials that they play on the BIG screens), so it’ll probably be a while before I see it. I don’t really care; the fifth book was very . . . something.
l see the movie on lmax tommorow for my birthday party.
I made a bookmark for a library contest last night (each year they give away four books, I think) to win a free copy of number 7, but the due date was june 29th. Pat (librarian who runs book club) told me they’d still accept it when I saw her on monday, but now that it’s saturday I don’t think they will.
It looked cool thoigh. There was a dementor holding a soul at the bottom and a phoenix risin aboive him, so the background behing the dementor was bright read/yelloe/orange. The phoenix had cool desings on the wings, too.
Too bad I iwon’t get it in on time, the two winning ones (they drew names for the winners) were going to be made into actually bookmarks and distributed around the library. Oh well.
We should have a special spoilers-allowed thread starting the morning of the 21st, just for us obsessive types that are getting it at midnight…
i saw the movie uber-cheap, go me.
it says no SPOILERS from the book, but nowhere does it say we cannot discuss our ideas. So, GAPAs, can we pleeeeeeeeeeeeeze? Just discuss what we think?
i will just put this out there: i feel sorry for Severus Snape.
i will explain if anyone asks.
w00t! HARRY POTTER!
I can’t wait for my book! My dad works at a bookstore so I get the book asap after it is readily available!
w00t!
I just saw the movie. It’s really good! Umbridge is SOOO SCARY… *shudders* I like Luna a lot. Tonks didn’t do very much..
They didn’t really mess things up or leave stuff out (they left out good quotes, though) – that’s my favorite of the books, and I like the book better (I suppose I always will) but it was still good.
the 5 movie was trible! It was the worst one yet!
13- me, too…to some extent
WARNING- POSSIBLE SPOILERS FROM OTHER BOOKS!!!!!!!
Here is my theory about the book…Harry is a horcrux, and he will sacrafice himself to kill Voldemort. He and Ginny will stay together, Ron and Hermionie will get together. I am conflicted about Snape…I soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo want him to be good, but following my theory, he was only keeping Harry alive to keep voldemort alive…Dumbledore will stay dead….
Uh-oh…….is that what you meant by no spoilers???? I thought you meant from the newest book………
[Don’t worry about discussing the movie. You won’t ruin it for anyone who’s read TOOTP. –Robert]
(12, 13) Of course, feel free to speculate as much as you like. And we will have a “spoilers allowed” thread after the book comes out.
Luna Lovegood is the best person in that movie.
I think Snape’s just working for himself, and will join whatever side looks as if it’s winning near the end.
20- i totally agree with you! she is awesome!
21- you kind of have 2 feel sorry 4 him. looks like he was teased unmercifuly by harry’s dad.
15- yeh, tonks could have done soooo much more. dosent she like sirious?
umbridge. . .the worst teacher ever. nicey nice, and then WHAM
13-i do too
21- I agree. hes very squirelly that snape. I will beg my parents to take me to the Book store at midnight as my early b-day present. Wish me luck!
Won’t Dumbledore still be there in the HM office as a picture on the wall?
23- Yes, but how much will they be able to communicate with him? All the other pictures do is sleep, grumble, and give warnings if necessary.
Wow. I haven’t even begun planning when to see the movie, maybe I’ll ask my mom when she gets home from book group.
24- Still It would be a sure fire way to determine his status as dead, and I’m sure dear old dumbledore would talk to Harry.
I’ll say what I hope will happen, and then what I think will happen:
I want Harry to go through a long process where he has to do lots of stuff, and exhaust himself, and then Voldemorty to kill ‘im off and then Ron and Hermiony’ll die and Hogwarts’ll be destroyed and there’ll be a reign of terror and they’ll all die.*
This is what I think will happen:
Harry’ll have a long perilous journey, aided by Ron, Hermione, and Ginny, and he’ll eventually make it to Voldemort. He’ll manage to kill ol’ Voldy with pure luck, and then he’ll start dating Ginny. Ron and Hermione’ll be dating from earlier in the book. They’ll all live happily ever after.
Which version do we prefer? *audience answers, “The first! The first! The first!”*
*to be read in one -three breaths and sped up at the end
5-Wait a minute, I thought you LIKED harry and the group! I only ever rant about things I don’t like, so do you or do you not like harry? What about your first two posts here? *is really confused*
22-tonks likes lupin, it says so in the 6th book
I think wormtail will save harry’s life somehow because dumbledore said in the 3rd book that harry would be glad he saved his life.
and i think that either harry is a horcrux or voldemort only has a 6 part soul cuz dumbledore said in the 6th book that voldemort would make the 6th horcrux with harry’s death and i dont think voldemort made a horcrux in the 5th or 6th book, completing his 7 part soul
snape- since both sides believe him he is really good at lying to one of them, i feel sorry for him because in the 5th book harry sees a glimpse of his home life and all the people making fun of him (james and sirius). snape is a great wizard (look at the spells he invented and his potions book) but no one gives him any credit. of course he hates harry; harry doesn’t show him any respect and reminds snape of his father, who made his life miserable.
i can’t wait for next week, will have finished the book by the morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that I’m going to see the movie tonight. Be prepared for rants in a few hours.
I LOVE HARRY POTTER!!! My mom says she will take me to see the movie after swim champs in a week. :-(. Oh well. Something to look forward too, I guess. It looks SO GOOD. I already pre-ordered the book and can’t wait to read it! My friend and her sister want to borrow it when I am done.
I am wondering who that one guy in the 5th book is who had already destroyed the Horcrux(can’t remember his initials right now). I don’t think Harry will die because the prophecy says that one will kill the other, and that would really suck if Voldemort killed Harry. I think that, after all his “training” in the past years, he’d know enough to destroy Voldemort. I also don’t think that Harry is a Horcrux, but that would be disturbing if he was. I don’t think so because Voldemort was trying to kill Harry when he was a baby, not make him a Horcrux.
21- Yeah, I sort of think that too. He’s just on the side of whoever’s closer.
NEW THEROY: Y’know the pensive Snape had in book 5, that hary saw his dad+Snape in? He thought it was DUmbledores, but maybe it’s Snape’s private one. And when he’s going to Voldemort he hides all the anti-Dark Lord and pro-Order thoughts in there, and when he’s with Dumbledore he hides his reverse thoughts. Cause they’re both powerful Legimi-whatsits. So he could keep his plans/thoughs secret.
I too feel sorry for Snape. He was so mistreated, is it a wonder he’s so bitter? And not just harrys dad, but everyone was downright nasty to him. Holding him up and showing everyone his underware? That’s gona leave some serious scars. I can understand his hatred.
29- He used the muggle-man’s for his 6th, and put it in his snake.
Ah, on the subject of Horcruxs: Some people say that Regulas Black is RAB, and my friend found a part in the 5th book where they were cleaning out the desk in Serius’s house and found ‘a heavy locket none of them could open’ she recons is the one that was replaced.
31-Yeah! And making a living thing a Horcrux isn’t a good idea, Dumbledore said so! The diary from the second book was a Horcrux, and Marvolo’s ring was a Horcrux, and Dumbledore and Harry thought that there would be four other Horcruxes, Slytherin’s locket, Hufflepuff’s cup, Nagini, and something that belonged to Gyffindor or Ravenclaw.
Here’s what may happen in the fourth book: Harry, Ron, and Hermione go on a quest to find Voldemort’s other Horcruxes, ending with finding Voldemort and killing Nagini, so Voldemort will be out of Horcruxes and killable, and Harry and Voldemort will fight, and Harry kills Voldemort, thus becoming a hero in the entire wizarding world, etc. etc.
31- They think that he was trying to kill him. Who but Voldemort knows for sure?
I think that both Harry and Voldemort should die. It would be a good conclusion for a series that has gone steeply downhill. Plus, while I don’t find Harry annoying like some people, I think that it’s only pure luck that has saved him from dying so far. It certainly isn’t brains, because if he possesses any, then he doesn’t use them much. Here’s a random and utterly implausible thought: What if Voldemort is a Horcrux? And why shouldn’t he be?
It’s been so long since I read the books that I really can’t remember a thing.
Hmm, a thing on HP is on TV. JKR changed the last word, won’t say what it is now. Oh, Jim Dale (narator of the harry potter audio book series, used to have his little speel on the back of other books memorized) just said a line in his Dumbledore voice. “Iv’e been better.” I think it was from book 6 though, heh.
35- What was the last word before?
36- Scar.
I think Hary’s going to die. I hope so.
…Rather morbid, arn’t I?
37- Yup. But almost everyone’s tired of Harry.
I saw the movie today, and I really liked it. I mean, it wasn’t great, but I thought it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. The beginning was a bit rushed, but I really liked the middle and end.
32-Good idea about Snape. I agree, he will be on whichever side wins. Good ideas about everything else.
33-You mean seventh book, not fourth.
34-Good question. But as Koko du Pelle said, Dumbledore told Harry that it wasn’t a good idea to make a living thing a Horcrux, and also-why would Voldemort be out to kill Harry if he was his own Horcrux? Also, Voldemort technically isn’t a Horcrux. He is in a way, but not really. He still has part of his soul in him, like Horcruxes, but I wouldn’t call him a Horcrux because it is his soul.
Also, did anyone here hear about how Neville and Harry are connected? I am not sure how, other than that I heard a rumor that if something had happened to Harry so Voldemort couldn’t give him the scar, that Neville would have gotten the scar.
40- Well, Dumbledore assured Harry that Nevelle wouldn’t be the one who ad to kill Voldemort because the prophesy ‘marked [Harry] as his equal’ and gave him some of his powers. Neville was the other baby born at the end of July, and he fit the rest of the prophesy, but because Voldemort went for the half-blood Harry he can’t be the prophesied one.
40- Maybe Neville will defeat Voldemort. Wouldn’t that be a twist?
34- because his soul is already in him. He has no where to take it out of. He actually is a horcrux because one part is still within him.
Hey, I saw HP last night. It was pretty good but they left a lot out, and Umbridge doesn’t look like a toad, she should have been fatter, but oh well. It wasn’t too creppy, but the part about Serious is so sad (just like the book)
Wow. It was actually, and I hate to say it, good. *is amazed that he said that* And I agree, Luna was good.
34-What do you mean downhill? I will admit, 5 was very frusturating to read, but 6 is the best book yet, followed by 4! Of course Voldemort is a horcrux-everyone has to have a part of their soul in themselves! Or did you mean something else? The question is, is Harry a horcrux???
I just saw the movie yesterday afternoon…I liked it, except they left out sooooooooooooooomuch stuff. I guess they had to…I mean, it was an 800 page book…
32- !!!!! Could be!
46- Really? I thought they went way downhill about halfway through the fourth book…. o_O
Wow. Already this Friday. Two epilogues. I can’t wait….
46- I think that most of what they left out was filler, although I would have liked to see the swamp. Actually, they left out the quidditch, didn’t they?
I liked the movie, as a story in itself, I liked the book, but wouldn’t say I liked one better, the movie was a good movie and the book was a good book.
The worst part was Serius. Him and Harry were so close throughout the whole movie, he was Harry’s only consistant ally (except for his “school friends” but they had about as much power as harry did) Dumbledore ignored Harry, the others in the Order didn’t want him to know anything, hagrid was gone a lot, he couldn’t (and didn’t) talk to most of the teachers, and the ministry as out to get him.
Oh, and I forgot to say that I hated umbridge. grrrrrrrrrrr
48- As was I. And Ron getting attacked by brains! And Marietta’s face! And *rambles on for two hours straight*
49- I was so depressed when Sirius died.
So, would going in full costumage as Luna for the book release be overdoing it?
Also, I liked the bit where Dumbledore and Fawkes poofed away in a fireball of d00m, even thought it didn’t happen in the book AT ALL.
34, 40- voldemort can’t be a horcrux because you have to put a piece of your soul into the object that becomes the horcrux, and you can’t put a piece of your soul in yourself.
32- i think the snake was already a horcrux, also dumbledore said voldemort uses significant deaths and an eavesdropping muggle isn’t very significant.
49, 51- I KNOW!!!!!!!!!! sirius was my favorite character
the third book is my favorite (hated the movie cuz they messed up the book so much) and the 5th one would have been my 2nd favorite but sirius died. i just reread the third book and cried because sirius and harry were so happy and i knew he would die in 2 books.
my friends are going today to meet the guys who play the weasley twins…. wishing i could have gone too
5 more days until the deathly hallows…………..
51- Yes it did, sort of. He knocked the ministry people out then left by Fwakes, I think. Kingsly didn’t have that line in the book, it was a portrait though.
I think that the fifth book was too much of a set-up for the next one. A damn long set-up, at that. I didn’t enjoy either the movie or the book as much as I did the others. I mean, I know it’s a series so each book has to precurse the next, but it didn’t have as big of an individual plotline as the others did.
And although it defined the conventional good-evil borederline even more (which is highly…boring), it was pretty sweet how they made the ministry all fascist and Hogwarts sort of a police state.
27 — I’d like that to happen, too. As seemingly dark as the plotlines are, the endings are too damn happy.
I really want to order the book and get it at midnight, cos it’s the last installment and I’ve never done it before (I was never really that fanatical) so this’ll be my last chance. However, I blew all of my money at Blues Fest last night…I guess I’ll just have to get some money out of the bank (because what I’m working for right now won’t be enough) or something.
Kagy hunts down and tortures people who think- a) harry is a horcrux and b) dumbledoor didn’t die. of course i will spare you MBers.
Here are my thoughts on stuff. harry is a whiny little boy .gah. i despise that child. I like ginny. i love malfoy and snape and belatrix lestrang. i connect with belatrix lestrang. hehehehehehehehehe. sorry. i’m done.
I think the last book will end with a huge magical explosion, possibly of hogwarts, possibly of voldemort, and possibly of Potter.
Jst a harmless idea of course.
I LOVE Luna Lovegood. When I go get the book at midnight (yes I am that nerdy, but let me say in midnighters defense, we just want to know what happens ASAP) I want to dress up as her.
I saw the movie today!
57: YES! Luna PWNS!
Harry is a horcrux.
End of story.
Then comes a giant asteriod and KABLOOIE all of them.
*Otzi is hyper on CAFFFFFIIIIEEEEENNNNNEEEE!!!!!!!!!
I still havn’t read the second book or seen any of the movies!!! (Okay I saw about a half of the Chamber of Secrets) but I”m plannin on buying them ALL this summer!
47- How so? Just curious, not looking to start a fight.
48- Yeah, so it wasn’t as exciting when Fred and George flew out on broomsticks. They also left out the part where Harry asks Kreacher if Sirius was there, and it doesn’t make as much sense when he goes to the Department of Mysteries. They also left out Hagrid’s story, which is kind of disappointing, but understandable, since it might have been kind of boring just watching Hagrid tell the story…I agree it was mainly just filler, but it made some of the other parts not make sense. They left out the Howler for Aunt Petunia, and the part where Uncle Vernon tried to kick him out…
Sorry for the double post, but
55- I agree-sort of. He gets kind of whiny in book 4, and almost UNBEARABLE in book 5, but he is much better in 6.
at the end of 5 and all of 6 is when harry gets emo
64-EMO?
47- what do you mean by two epilogues? does it have them?
Hmm.. A while back Mary Grand Pré (Illustrator for Harry Potter) spoke at my mother’s library (she’s a librarian). That was back before Mary Grand Pré moved to Florida and lived within walking distance of my house. Also before the books *really* got famous i.e. pre fourth book. She happened to leave a painting of hers at the library and so my mother offered to take it to her. My brother and I tagged along and we were invited in to her house and shown her studio area and her dogs and cats. She was quite nice. Now she’s in Florida though, tsk tsk.
l saw the movie yesterday. l liked it. But eveeryone pronounced LeStrange wrong. They said LeStraynge, l say Lestronge.
i get to see the movie this week! before my brother does, cuz he’s at camp he he he.
i love luna too. if i was at hogwarts i’d probably be in ravenclaw. i’m getting the book at midnight too, but don’t know who to dress up as. maybe luna…….
anyone who’s dressing as luna, what are you wearing? i promise i won’t copy, just steal some ideas. no one will ever know (except everyone reading this blog).
widdershins, I am quite jealous
Hmm, many people seem to be Luna-ing. Huzzah! A place to plan.
I’ll be wearing the majority of my sophomore year uniform [hey, Ravenclaw colours!] Along with whatever weird socks and sweaters I can find. And I’ll be making a bottlecap necklace and radish earrings. And hopefully finding 3d glasses…. ^_^
Has anyone read The Science of Harry Potter, by Roger Highfield? It’s well done — very Muselike.
By the way, Michael Gerber wrote his first Barry Trotter parody while working as an editor of Muse.
71- l own it.
Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I think that Harry needs to be one of the ones to die.
It would be cool if Neville ended up being the BIG hero!
LUNA PWNZ.
I saw the movie last night. It was okay, but the focus had shifted a lot from the actual Order of the Phoenix to the DA, which was only a half-plot in the book. Voldy was as freaky as always (STILL NO NOSE) and the possesion scene was really good. All in all:
3 and a quarter stars out of 5.
As for the book, I have a reading party planned at my house with my friends Jordan (SHE’S A GIRL) and Amanda. We are going to lock ourselves in my room with a bag of chips, a bottle of pop, a computer, and our books, and READ for a long time with added commentary.
75- Good plan. I would do that, but I don’t think it’d go well as my former-potter-obsessed friend who still suffers large relapses, escpecally now, would scream out things every page or so.
Luna, Hermione& Ginny PWN!!!!!!! (Is this the correct plural form of PWNZ????) They are the coolest, strongest girl characters ever!!!!!
75-Ok. But I don’t see why a boy couldn’t become crazy about this too…
I wish I could stay up till midnight, but since I’m leaving on vacation the next morning, my mom-or mum- says I can’t. So…. anyone who is staying up till midnight, have an extra good time for me. can’t wait…can’t wait… can’t wait…
64: he’s not emo, he’s depressed
74: I think he’s going to play some important part. Neville is cool. And so is Luna.
…and Harry had better NOT die, because then the whole series is just a big set up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can kind understand why he would go emo; because his parents are dead, his live family are muggles, and mean muggles at that, he has no friends except at Hogwarts, and half the world hates him. And there are at least ten people who want him dead.
80-Nobody has an excuse to go emo, because that either means that you’re trying to kill yourself, which is just stupid, or you’re a rich kid who thinks it’s cool to dye your hair black and sulk in corners for attention. At least that’s my understanding of emo people.
But yeah i actually hope harry dies…he annoys me. Jacob and i were talking about it and jacob was like “will you cry if he dies?” and i was like “no, i’ll cry if he doesn’t” so jacob tried to hex me but it didn’t work too well.
34-i agree about it going downhill. but you all knew that…
I have three things to say:
1. I saw the movie a week ago, and it’s not good. It’s not even OK.
IT WAS THE BEST MOVIE OF THE SERIES!!!!!
2. I think that Harry and Voldemort both have to die.
3. Has anyone read “Henry Potty and the Pet Rock” or “Harry Putter and the Chamber of Cheesecakes”? I read part of the first chapters on amazon, and they are funny!
So why exactly can’t JKR do some good things with her money???
83- Good point, but maybe she has. She seems extremely nice, and although I might be dreaming this, I thought I read about her giving some to good causes of some sort. You know she used to be extremely poor.
I am going to get the book on Friday at midnight, and I want to dress up as Luna Lovegood. Have already said that? Oops!!!
84-Maybe, but enough. For someone earning $230 per minute.
I MEANT not enough. *hits head* I can’t stand myself!
81- Haha, I liked you’re responce. Tell him he’s a squib.
86- That makes two of us.
KIDDINGKIDDINGSorryseriouslyIjustcan’thelpitsorry. You’re a muser and you’re nice. *ahem*
I agree though, she likely could and should, do more to help people with her money. Though, she probably is and just doesn’t publicize it. I don’t know. If she’s not she should.
71-i remember him and being the totally oblivious person that i am, i had to google barry trotter to find out what it is. that’s pretty cool!
There is not a single person left in the books that I would cry for. Okay, maybe Buckbeak or Hedwig. (Patron saint of moss gatherers, did you know?) But Buckbeak might already be dead.
I didn’t cry for Dumbledore either. Or Cedric. Or Sirius (I don’t think). So maybe I wouldn’t cry anyway.
86- I hate it when I do that.
Who else is going to get the book at midnight?
i am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow. looking around, i realized deathly hallows has leaked. whole thing is on pirate bay. but… really really bad quality. some dude took pics with a digital camera. from what ive heard, [spoilers snipped]
We are, because we’re driving to relitives house and will stop at a wall mart. We wern’t, before.
My sister was striking up HP conversations with everyone in the book store today. “Aren’t you excited about the new Harry Potter book?”
91,93-Congrats!!!
I am so excited, its tomorrow, and it will be the last excitement of getting to know what happens yet to Harry and his friends, after I finish it the whole series will be over, never again will we have the thrill of knowing what happens next in detail…..*cries* There will be other books, but I love Harry Potter.
95-i wanna ruin it so bad……
but i wont,cause im nice.
RANTS BELOW DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT
I’m sorry, but the media is acting like this is bringing kids back to reading. It WON’T!!! When this set is all done, they won’t keep reading, they will wait for the next thing the book sellers push, and every other kid is talking about.
And any deep meaning people try to say there is isn’t absorbed when kids read an 800-page book in one night.
90- will get book at midnight and stay up all night reading it. should be fun, especially cuz we’re going to see relatives on saturday, so i will be very tired. oh well, CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!!!
2 more days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
don’t know who i would cry for in the 7th book, i cried for sirius and dumbledore (but dumbledore not until “the white tomb”) and sirius in book 3 (which i already said way up there somewhere)
OMGGGGG ITZ TOMMOROW I’M GOING TO GO TO THE MIDNIGHT RELEASE AND PARTY DOWN YESSS Anyone else doing that?
Also, did you guys know the books i all over the internets already? I’m afraid of being spoiled so I won’t even read your comments sry.
97- personally any meaning i derive from a book i don’t get while reading it. i read the potter books in one sitting, generrally, but any message i get comes from the thinking i do about it afterwards, the same as with any book.
Ahg. We were going to go to Oak Park (not where I live, an hour or so away), where they have a Diagon ally thing set up, and Emmerson was going to be there and we were going to go to the podcast. Mom wasn’t going to let us stay till midnight, but still. That was not something I wanted to miss. But nooo, we have to visit relatives. Grr…
There are a few things I would like to say considering Mr. Harry J. Potter, this thread so far and just life in general.
….Widdershins is an old english word for counter-clockwise, please use it correctly.
….Horcruxes remind me of the 9 lives that a Chrestomanci, from Diana Wynn Jones’ The Chronicals of Chrestomanci, is supposed to have.
….PWNZ is pronounced P-OWNs
….[spoilers snipped]
I am very ecited.
*Look at previous post made by Hafiz*
Hmm I guess those were spoilers, kind of.
Well Great and Powerful Administrators, do you have any plans for tomorrow? I also feel that we should have an increased awarness of GAPA Abuse. Sometimes we (including myself) will just post and post, not even thinking about the hardworking people who read every post and decide if it is acceptable or not.
I salute you GAPA!
The evil part of me that has strong hold over me despratly wants to send an email with the subject line “HARRY DIES!” to everyone I know. The inside would just say “haha kidding I don’t know yet” or something. I think I’d get beaten up, but it would be worth it…
102- Dude, e~a likes the word “widdershins”. She knows what it means (I assume, I’m pretty sure that she does). Because the likes the meaning of the word she chose it as a new name.
104- Fun, fun, fun… I should do that. *heads off to e-mail*
102, 105- errr? yes I chose widdershins as my name. It is a splendid word. I also like the meaning of it. Since it does indeed mean counter clockwise it indicates backwardsness and uniqueness. (to me anyways) it is also a means of entering Faerie in various stories (walking three times widdershins. So yes, I know the meaning of my name. And how am I not using it correctly? It’s my NAME. I’m just borrowing a word for my NAME. it’d be the same usage if I put “computer” or “counter clockwise” up in that box.
Oh, I like your idea of horcruxes being like the nine lives of Chrestomanci.
I’m going to a Potter party Friday…I’m dressing up as Luna Lovegood, in the costume my mom made me for Halloween…I’ve already won a free book with that costume, but as I can’t pick it up ’til Monday, I’m buying one at midnight Friday, anyway. It has a few improvements now, though….A bottlecap/cork Butterbeer necklace, and my very own Quibbler…with the articles printed in the book, plus extrapolations on theones summed up in a sentence…. Probably won’t have the book finished ’til Sunday….I will read it on the hour drive home from the party, but as I have to work 8-4 the next day, and will be getting up at 6:30, I will already be delightfully tired enough without trying to read the book Friday night….Will bring it to work and read it over my required half hour lunch break….God, I can’t bloody wait! i’ve been counting down since November, before I even knew anything more than that it would be released in Juy, didn’t even know the title….
I came up with a theory for the cover, and also, I no longer believe Sirius was dead when he fell through the veil:
Here goes:
Sirius was not dead when he fell through the veil, so he may still be alive. “Order of the Phoenix”, Pg. 805-806 (US) and Pg. 710-711 (UK): ‘Only one couple was still battling, apparently unaware of the new arrival. Harry saw Sirius duck Bellatrix’s jet of red light: [the color of a stunner] He was laughing at her. “Come on, you can do better than that!” he yelled….The second jet of light hit him squarely on the chest. [Not mentioned as being a different color, such as green, the color of the Killing Curse] The laughter had not quite died from his face, but his eyes widened in shock….It seemed to take Sirius an age to fall….And Harry saw the look of mingled fear and surprise on his godfather’s wasted, once-handsome face….’ Not only was the jet of light not mentioned as being green, the color of Avada Kedavra, but Sirius’s expression changed once the jet of light hit him. First, his ‘eyes widened in shock,’ then he had a ‘look of mingled fear and surprise’ on his face. Avada Kedavra kills instantly. His expressions would not have changed if it had been the Killing Curse he was hit with, since he would have been DEAD. He was alive when he fell through the veil!
Also, I think I’ve solved the cover of “Deathly Hallows”. As you’ve probably noticed, the cover depicts an event inside the book. When I first saw this cover, I thought it looke rather like a stone ampitheatre, with Harry and Voldemort fighting their final battle, surrounded by the ghostly shapes of the Death Eaters. I thought nothing of the curtains. But here’s the description of the room in the Department of Mysteries with the veil that Harry and Luna hear voices behind. “Order of the Phoenix” Pg. 682 (UK). (Sorry, don’t have time to go look up the US pages, so you’ll just have to figure it our for yourself….) ‘They were standing on the topmost tier of what seemed to be stone benches running all around the room and descending in steep steps like an ampitheatre….there was a raised stone dais in the centre of the lowered floor, and upon this dais stood a stone archway….hung with a tattered black curtain or veil….’ And behind this curtain are the voices of what are presumably spirits, correct? Hallows are spirits. The title is Deathly Hallows, the cover, in my opinion, depicts a stone amiptheatre, and a tattered curtain. Perhaps this room in the Department of Mysteries is where the final battle between Harry and Voldemort takes place? And perhaps the figures are not Death Eaters, but “Deathly Hallows”?
So, whadda you think? Other than that I spend to much time analyzing all things HP….
Haven’t seen the movie yet, but am afraid it sucks, all the others have, ‘specially three and four, and if they left out as much as it sounds like they did (no brains on Ron! no hagrid giant story! no pimpled SNEAK across stupid Marrieta Edgecombe’s face!) then it definitely sounds ike it sucks.
Anyway, sorry, long post, I always do this, though, don’t MB forever, than have months of stuff to say…
Oh, yeah, in ‘Harry by the Numbers’ in the Muse mag, it said Voldy is presumed to have 7 Horcruxes, which is incorrect! He is only presumed to have 6!
Excerpt from my letter to Muse, pointing out this horrible mistake….
In ‘Harry by the Numbers’, pg. 32, it says, and I quote, “7=Number of Horcruxes Voldemort is presumed to have.” This is incorrect! (Assuming you’re going completely based on what the late Albus Dumbledore told us. If you’re going based on speculations that Voldemort accidentally made a seventh Horcurx, Harry (see MuseBlog for my HP theories), then okay, nevermind. But since that’s not what we’re given as ‘fact’, I don’t think that’s what you were going by!!!) on page 503 of the US (scholastic) version (sorry, too lazy to look up what the page is in the UK edition) of “Half-Blood Prince” it reads, ‘”He made seven Horcruxes?” said Harry….”No, Harry, not seven Horcruxes: six.” So, as far as we know now (at the time I’m writing this, July 16, less than a week before “Deathly Hallows” comes out), Voldemort only made six Horcruxes, NOT seven, as was stated in ‘Harry by the Numbers.’ As I am THE biggest Potter obsessed pottermaniac on this planet, I could not just pass by that horrid misinformation.
In addition, the number of pages you said were in all seven of the Harry Potter books doesn’t match up with what I add them up to be. You say there are 4,178, but using hard copies of the US versions, I only count 4,125 pages. (Breakdown: B1 has 309, B2 has 341, B3 has 435, B4 has 734, B5 has 870, B6 has 652, and B7 has (according to an article in the local paper) 784 pages.) Not as important as your mistake that says Voldy is presumed to have seven Horcruxes, but still doesn’t seem to add up….
I think I’ll finally shut up now.
106- About widdershins, I was posting about Sweet Melpomene’s post #70 where she uses widdershins as an exclamation “widdershins, I am quite jealous” I apologize if you feel insulted e~a, or if I have insulted you SM, But I have a nasty habbit of correcting people’s grammer.
Sometimes reading the blog makes me kind of angery.
(108) SM was not using “widdershins” as an exclamation, she was addressing e~a in reply to comment 67.
Well…….I hope to be going to a party tonight….I also hope to be dressing up as Luna (all musers seem to love her…she’s the most fun to dress up as!). I have one of my mom’s long, black robes (it screams Hogwarts!), a gigantic tye dye shawl to tie around my head, big blue beads, and gaudy ceramic heart earrings. I even have some shoes that look kind of like hers. I would make stuff, but it’s kind of short notice, and what the heck?
My costume is like the typical school uniforms from the movies….I have black mary janes, silvery grey knee length socks, a dark grey semi-pleated knee length skirt, long sleeve white shirt, grey sweater vest with blue and bronze trim, blue and bronze tie(in the style of the first two movies, my mom made it for me), black robes, open down the front and line in blue–it’s reversable, too–a Ravenclaw emblem thing for the robes that mom ordered offline, a Butterbeer cork and cap necklace, a black pointed witches hat, to which I added a thick blue ribbon, around the hat part, just above the brim, and tied it in a big, gaudy bow, and fastened it with a small bronze eagle pin, also hung a small black cat shaped bell on each side of the hat, a Quibbler mag, and REAL radish earrings. Y’know, I think Luna’s on to something with radish earrings….they actually look GOOD…they make way better earrings than food. Yup, I know, I’m psycho.
Oh, sorry about the name confusion… As Rebecca said, I was addressing the person, widdershins.
Well, I got my wristband for my place in line. NUMBER 14! Heehee. But I have a friend who’s number 4, and he’s rather rubbing it in my face. Heh, ah well. I can’t wait.
Lunaness: plaid skirt, bottle-cap necklace, blouse, sweater, fun socks. And I have to finish constructing radish earrings. Wheee. Oh, and a frog purse, even though Trevor is Neville’s… ^_^ I’m also all stocked up on choklit for the night. It’s going to be fun!
106- Just trying to help you…
107- Seems good to me. There’s also, on the UK cover I think, a dragon with figures riding it near the top or something.
No dressing up for me. I doubt there’s going to be a lot of people in the wallmart (grr) we’re stopping at, especally as there arn’t many kids in that town. All…old people… the only stores they have are wall mart and a big furniture store. *sigh*
Anyway. The Luna costumes sound cool, guys.
Oi, where’s the spoilers allowed thread? I know who dies, in case anyone’s interested.
115- And how would you know that? Does it come out earlier in Switzerland?
No, but someone who already owns a copy (pre release sales) posted it on the net.
I am going to be at the bookstore at midnight, in line, wearing my Hogwarts “robes” and clutching my wand as I wait to lay hands on the book.
I love the Harry Potter series, and think that theym are some of the best literature ever. They are a good story, and, if you look, some very strong messages.
And Surius is dead. The veil in the Dept. of Mysteries was death. Think about it, the Dept. od Mysteries is for studying mysteries; time, thoughts, death, to name some of the rooms that you read about in the 5th book. And they even say that the room with the veil was the “Death Room”. How much plainer can you get? Harry is looking at the veil, and thinks to himself how it is old, but beautiful. This is one of the things that sets him apart from Voldemort. Voldemort thinks that there is nothing worse than death, and Harry actually feels as though he’d like to walk through the veil.
I really don’t think that Harry is a horcrux. I can’t see how it would even be possible.
I beleive that Dumbledore is truly dead, even though I hate to admit it.
My Mom thinks that the last book will bring about the end of the wizarding world. I don’t know.
I can’t wait to read it and see what happens. I think that the books have gotten better, if anything. Each of them has been so good.
117 – Isn’t that illegal?
102-sorry, gotta get yer fact straight. pwnz(or pwns) can be pronouced any of the following ways.
[oÊŠn] (“own,” in reference to the original misspelling) and [poÊŠn] (as in “pone”).
Other variations include:
* [poon] (as in “harpoon”)
* [pəʔˈoÊŠn] (“puh-own”)
* [piˈoÊŠn] (“pee-own”)
* [pÊŒn] (“pun”)
* [pwin] (“pween”)
* [pÉ”Ën] (“pawn”)
* [paÊŠn] (to rhyme with “gown”)
* [pwəʔˈnÌ©] (“pwuh-nn”)
* [pwoÊŠn] (“pwone”)
* [pwɪn] (“pwin”, rhyming with “win”)
* [pÉ™wÉ™n] (“puh-wun”)
had to do that.
119-why, yes!
117-have to correct you. someone got their hands on a copy, took bad pics of it with a digital camera. posted it on photobucket. scholastic got a subpoena, and photobucket banned the user and took down the pics. but now its everywhere, and there are typed up copies on TPB.
115-indeed, i wanna ruin people’s lives!
118-oohh man. *holds self back*
Okay, I need advice. Should I go, and be tired all through my water polo game or should I not go and miss the chance? And will anyone else be able to go to a Barnes & Nobles near Quakerbridge (if people know where that is, otherwise ignore it.) I want to know if I’d have to think of something distinctive.
Glassboro- I say go. This is the last Harry Potter book, and probably not the last water polo game (although who am I to know????), and it is the chance of a lifetime!!!!! Just don’t stay up all night reading, and you’ll be fine.
p.s. Try to take a nap before the game, unless it’s reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally early.
Hmm. 2ish hours till midnight. I’m not really that tired.
My mom is under the impression that we’re just going to buy the books at midnight, then come backk and go to bed. And not read them till the next morning. -scoffs-
open the bliddy thread! god. the book has been legally relesed for 3 hours!
I’ll never get the book. I didn’t bother requesting it at the library, because I would have been hold number 659. But I will show restraint! I will not read the spoilers!
Last night my sister stayed up till midnight, even though we weren’t going anywhere. It was funny.
122- I went, and was actually fine. It was amusing to see all of the people, too. I ended up not being tired for my not-last water polo game (which was sort of boring because the Stingrays didn’t show up). It was at 9:00, I had to get there at 8:45, and I live 1/2 an hour away from the pool, and so I had to get up at 7:15 (I actually managed it getting up 15 minutes late) if I was going to be on time.
Rant on the Potter movie:
Dudley’s buddy’s weren’t around when Harry approached them: they had already bid him goodnight. they were not in the park when harry approached Dudley, but instead, in front of #4 PD. Dementors do not physically attack, but just suck your soul. ADF is not portayed very well, she sounded much more worried and angry when she yelled at Harry in th book. Harry supporting Dudley on the way back to 4PD is very fake looking. The letter from Mafalda Hopkirk did not read itself, and it said they’d be coming to destroy his wand, and Harry got several other letters. VD, PD, and DD, did not leave 4PD to get DD medical attention, and no muggle was watching, they left under a false invite from the OotP to the Best Kept Suburban lawn Competition, and THEN the OotP arrives. Harry was YELLING at HG and RW, not just sounding annoyed, they left out the cleaning going on at 12GP, which is important, ’cause it’s well, let’s just say it’s important cuz it plays a part in B7, THIS is when Harry sees the Black tapestry family tree, not at C hristmas time, and it’s a tapestryk not wall paper. A”ME”M gave HP the picture of the OotP not Sirius, they left out the boggart, and just about everything, and well,I’ll rant more tomorrow, dad’s going to get suspicious if I keep typing for hours.
I havent read the new book but i like spoilers .
127- They didn’t go to the “Best Kept Suburban Lawn Competition”? Aww, that was a great part.
didn’t get B7 yet. I figure, what’s a week more? I want to read it, but it’s not my favorite series. I’ve read better books.
WARNING-this is a rant.
JKR is obsessed with death! But this is much worse. Once I finish the last book, that’s it. Gone.No more Harry Potter to read. It’s tragic.
sorry. *stomps on computer*
That was a rant? You promise to be a laid-back, mellow, sort of person.
Just in case anyone is worried, the Los Angeles Times (July 20) reports that reading Harry Potter will not, repeat NOT, turn you into a devil worshipper:
• A four-year study concluded that Harry Potter books do not lure children into a world of devil worship, animal sacrifice and a penchant for uttering dark incantations at midnight while standing in the center of a pentagram.
“Specific questions about magic, as well as interview notes and follow-ups found no evidence that reading the Harry Potter books was leading the children to the occult or confusing them about the use of magic,” conclude three researchers at St. Joseph College in Connecticut of their work, which was published in the Journal of Research in Character Education.
134- Oh ambiguous diety, they actually did that? Ha, I don’t know weither to be saddened or amused…
So if you do find yourself sacrificing animals and muttering incantations from inside a pentagram, you have nobody to blame but yourself.
134- What, you mean that my habit of standing inside a pentagram at midnight and muttering dark incantations doesn’t come from reading the Harry Potter books?
(135) Sometimes both reactions are appropriate.
(137) No, that probably comes of being an older sister. *voice of experience*
(137, 138) I think she must have picked it up from that subversive magazine she’s always reading.
Wait- the muttering in pentagrams works for older sisters?
Excuse me for a moment. I must find so chalk.
139-oh, i think i know the one. They teach you how to stand around in pentagrams with dead skulls and suchlike…i hear they organize field trips to france to practice. And sometimes, to try and appeal to the more modern audience, they stand in pink, hot-pink-bunny shaped things instead of pentagrams, and call up some 2-D devil who plays the flute.
136- *stares down at dead sacrificed animal remains and chalk figures* Hmmmm. I wonder where I got this idea?
Why do people take The Onion seriously?
If people were smarter a lot of the world’s problems would go away.
From another point of view, that’s what the LA Times wants you to think. Secretly, the staff have all read it and become worshippers themselves…
It explains the lack of chalk in the house, though.
Hey, here is an interesting fact I discovered. Draco’s mom is named Narcissa Malfoy. There is also a disorder called Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is characterized by inflated, unrealistic feelings of self-worth. LOL!
134-Agreed! I am not a devil-worshipper, and I love Harry Potter!
137 & 138-LOL
139-Bigger LOL
140-ROFL
141-Yeah, I think I have heard of that, too. Isn’t there some big meeting coming up for that in Washington DC?
I saw HP & the Order of the Phoenix on IMAX this afternoon. That is definitely the way to watch this movie. The details are amazing. You can even read the boxes of Cheeri-Owls that the students have for breakfast.
144- The name of the disorder comes from the greek myth of narcissus, who upon seeing his reflection in a lake dove in because he so loved himself and drowned. charming little tale.
ACK! I wrote a fairly long post on the HP5 movie and now it’s gone. And I’m not bothering to rewrite it. The gist, though, is that if you are a purist you are going to hate this movie, but if like cool special effects then it’s not bad.
146-Neat. But I still wonder if the disorder and Mrs. Malfoy are somehow related.
147- I wouldn’t say that. I am, for the most part, a purist, but I loved the movie. It was probably my 2nd favorite(the 1st was my favorite)
(148) “Narcissa” is the female form of the name Narcissus. JKR may have named her with the Greek myth in mind, to hint that she is vain and self-absorbed. Or maybe she is named after the flower Narcissus, which in turn was named after the man in the myth.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder is usually called by the shorter name narcissism.
Look, the idea with HP is that it becomes increasingly disturbing and violent. Just read the sleeves in the first book and the last ones. It went from some happy magic adventure into a bad Stephen King wannabe.
RE satanism in harry potter.
HP is full of pagan references. JKR knew her mythology and filled her stories with references, names, and places. The idea that it promotes animal sacrifice is caused by two things:
A) The fact that people have been calling anything pagan “diabolic” and “satanic”. In fact the major outcrys against HP come from the fundamentalist nuts.
B) The media will jump on anything linked in any way to satanism. People are gullible and easily shocked.
143-Aaah, the onion ♥
mythology isn’t satanic..it certainly came before christianity…
151: Of course, but the Church has been labelling anything pre-christian or non-christian as satanic until very recently.
I saw the movie two days ago. It is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better than the book. You wouldn’t even believe it. The movie is downright good and the book was BAD. (No offense.)
There were, of course, problems with it. The kiss went on much too long, and they left out lots of things. I just didn’t like the book, so the movie not being exactly like the book was fine by me. I do wish they had left in more of the Department of Mysteries scenes, but they did the best they could and they did it very well.
Umbridge was perfect. The actress was splendid. Luna was also brilliant.
The characters were so much better in this movie, too. They probably were in the book, but I don’t remember much about that. Luna, Snape, and Neville were my favorite characters, but everyone was good, really, even Harry, who is a boring character. *dodges furious pies*
I have finished my rant. Now if only I could find somewhere to rant about City Of Lost Children, my day would be complete.
It’s a little self-centered to give your main character the same birthday as you, you know.
But very enlightened to give your main character the same birthday as killerchipmunk.
155- Yes.
The movie dragged on way too long. Everyone’s read the book, come on, you can’t base the movie on plot twists and what happens! Fill it up with special effects and wierd stuff, maybe a little more graphic violence in the fight scenes.
I disagree with you on that, Frigi.
157- I think they shortened the movie too much. But they could have made it a lot darker and scarier. I would have.
*deepbreath* Harrylookedcuterwithlonghair. *blushes uncharicteristically at this uncharicteristic outburst*
*This does not contain spoilers*
I just finished the 7th book last night!!! I wish the series wasn’t over though because now I have a boring summer with NOTHING ELSE TO READ!!!! Aww I’m sad. Oh well. The last movies are still coming out
Oh and Happy Birthday Harry and J.K.!!
157- Special effects are cool, but you can’t just take the plot twists right out of the movie to make room for them. And I’m quite glad the fight scenes weren’t graphic.
I would have left in more scenes in the Department of Mysteries, ’cause that went kind of fast, but other than that I wouldn’t have changed it.
I’m starting to think that maybe I should read book 5 again.
160- When did he have long hair?
161- Gosh. You need to branch out a bit, no offense. Read the Young Wizards, or something.
161-wuz the book like!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i know that i should read it but i’ve not had the chance..and i’m dying to know WHAT happens!!!! when i was in the book store, i was able 2 read bits and pieces but not enough…
153-ditto.
150-a ton of my friends will never get 2 read it because their parents wont let them read them (fundamentalists)
The movie could have been way better, people, honestly.
Happy Bday to JK and Harry Potter! Happy bday to JK and Harry Potter! Happy bday happy bday happy bday to JK and Harry Potter!
*appelsause*
I thought the movie was better than the fourth movie. *shudders*
But of course the book was better. They always are.
Snape rox my sox!
167-completly agree
The books are ALWAYS better than the movies. Period. End of story. They just are, and there’s nothing the movie directors can do about it.
Yeah, my friend figured out that Harry Potter was, by now, 27 years old…how weird is that?
SPOILER WARNING: “DEATHLY HALLOWS” SPOILER WARNING: “DEATHLY HALLOWS” SPOILER WARNING: “DEATHLY HALLOWS” SPOILER WARNING: “DEATHLY HALLOWS” SPOILER WARNING: “DEATHLY HALLOWS”
so its not even the 19 years later from the epilouge
SPOILER WARNING: “DEATHLY HALLOWS” SPOILER WARNING: “DEATHLY HALLOWS” SPOILER WARNING: “DEATHLY HALLOWS” SPOILER WARNING: “DEATHLY HALLOWS” SPOILER WARNING: “DEATHLY HALLOWS”
128- Opal????? I never even guessed! Your capitalization skills had me baffled.
I borrowed book five from my best friend. I’m currently reading it until six thirty in the morning. I know, my sleeping habits suck. I skipped number three because no one had it and stuff. Was it any good and/or did any thing happen?
144-Great. Now we have to find out what Lucius, Draco, Albus, Rebus, Reumus, Sirius, Ludo, Dobby, Winky, Hermione, and a great number of other strange names mean. Funfun!
175-Doesn’t Draco mean Dragon?
175-reumus is a founder of rome and sirius is the name of the dog star.
I read that each characters wand is either their birth wood (something Celtic), or represents their personalities. I think Voldemorts is yew because that has to do with death/Harrys is holly because its evergreen, or something like that.
Hermione is a friend of JKR’s.
Okay, this is going to shock all of you. It contains a bit of a spoiler from the 7th book, though, so beware.
Harry Potter is the Messiah. We figured that out at the Kokonvention. How do we know, you ask? Jesus apparently came back to life because he was willing to die. Harry did the same. Draw your own conclusions.
Winky means Wink(ooh how amazing), Dobby is a fictional name with no real meaning. Shocker.
I was being sarcastic about finding the names, but if you really want to…
Hi!
I am fellowmuser, but have now changed my name to Kokonilly. I think it suits me better.
Albus is “white” in Latin.
I LOVE HARRY POTTER I LOVE HARRY POTTER
They bungled (don’t you love that word?) up the fourth movie. It was AWFUL. I mean, come on!
Meh.
Oppugno is attack in Latin.
Levicorpusis (wow) levitate the corpse in Latin.

Hey now, people, is this thread dead?
Come ON, I can’t be the only muser that still is cwazy about Harry Potter???
Yeah, I’m still checkin on this thread every once in a while.
No more Potter books! Tis a tragedy!
I saw the movie of five. They left out Mundungus Fletcher! Which destroys a whole sub-plot of seven. HORRIBLE!
Why can’t they spend five billion on Harry Potter instead?
I hope that J.K.R.’s next book is sci-fi.
*gasp* Gasp!
That’s an interesting idea.
165: Of course the movie could have been way better–my making it EXACTLY like the book. To be honest, I don’t think anybody who hadn’t read the book would’ve been able to follow the movie very well.
175: Here’s the breakdown on some names:
1. Remus Lupin: The twin founders of Rome–Romulus and Remus–were raised by wolves. Lupin is very similar to the latin species name of wolf–lupis. Thus, it is hinted that RL is a werewolf
2. Sirius Black–Sirius is the dog star. Black is the color dog Sirius morphs into.
3. Narcissa, female form of Narcissus, from greek myth who was madly in love with himself.
4. Draco–latin for dragon or snake. Also, Malfoy. The latin prefix mal- means bad. malinformed; malicious; malintent, etc.
5. Andromeda, Artcturus, Sirius–couple of names of Blacks, are also names of stars, some, like Sirius, could have deeper meaning.
6. Tom Riddle–Well, Voldie is something of a riddle isn’t he?
7. Horcrux–A crux of a plan is like the central point of it, the thing that makes it work, or something like that. Horcruxes are pretty central to Voldie’s semi-immortality. Random thought: I found Moody’s comment in HPDH “Not even Voldemort can split himself in seven” to be so bloody HILARIOUS! Because he can, at least he can split his soul in seven.
8. Minerva: Pretty sure this meant wise or something, or maybe that was Hermione.
9.Penelope Clearwater: Penelope was the daughter of whatever her name was in greek myths, who is now wife of the greek god of the underworld, whatever his greek name was–Pluto is his roman name–and spends winters with him, which is why her mother mourns, causing winter. What this has to do with PC, from HP, I do not know.
10. Argus Filch: Wasn’t the Argus the name of Odysseus’ ship or something in the odyssey? Or ahd something to do with the Odyssey? Anyway, to filch is to steal something. Still not quite sure what has to do with AF, but whatever.
11. severus snape: Severus sounds a bit like “severe” and Snape is rather severe.
12. Albus: Latin for white: Dumbledore has white hair and beard.
13. Percy Weasley—Well, as JKR said, Weasels are much maligned in Britain, thus why she had the Weasleys, but Percy, as we know, is short for Percival. WAsn’t Percival the guy who went so wrong in his search for the Grail. Found it, but failed to ask any questions, and thus lost it—or something like that? Anyway, Percy was certainly misguided.
14. Nymphadora: A nymph is a stage in metamorphosis, and Dora certainly morphs—thus metamorphmagus—so perhaps that what is being hinted at here.
15. Irma Pince—no clue, although I’ve heard it theorized that it means “I’m a Prince”, aka Eileen Prince, and that Argus Filch is Tobias Snape, but seriously doubt the AF=TS part, cuz TS is a cruel bastard who beat my beloved Sev.
16. If I ever solved any other names, I forgot them. But Animagus: person who morphs into an ANIMal and magus is a lot like mage, which is a magic doer.
17. Grindelwald: German sounding, mentioned in HPPS as having been defeated in 1945, the same year Hitler committed suicide. I’m thinking Hitler connection. Big time Hitler connection based on stuff I can’t mentione here cuz it’s a spoiler.
18. Luna: short for lunatic. Go Luna! We love you!
19. Oh, Voldemort: French Vol de mort: flight from death—Voldie is certainly flying from death.
20. Fleur Delacour—break it down—French for flower of the heart—which she rather is.
21. Gabrielle Delacour—There was a male angel Gabriel, and my neighbour is name Gabrielle—any connection? I dunno.
22. Can’t think of any others….but I think this is sufficient for now.
23. I do wonder if the three Ogden’s: Bob Ogden who goes to Marvolo’s shack for the ministry, Tiberius Ogden who quit the wizenngamot at the same time as Grizelda Marchbanks (B6 I think), and Ogden of Ogden’s old firewhiskey are related….. it was so hilarious—somebody with the name of Ogden came in to the place where I work one time, found it so funny, ’cause I couldn’t stop thinking of how Ron wanted to try it at the Hogshead…..
24. Speaking of which, I love how Aberforth’s patronus is a goat, when he was getting so much bad press about practicing inappropriate charms on a goat….
25. Just about all the spells are latin–I looked ’em up in my sis’s latin dictionary. Homenus revelio–reveal the humans. Muggletum repellio, or something likle that–repel the Muggles (yeah, yeah, muggle isn’t latin. deal with it)
191: I’m more than “cwazy” about HP. It’s my favourite subject.
Yup, the movies left my mom (who “hates” Harry Potter) completely confused and convinced that Harry Potter is no good.
192: They left out the gang finding a heavy unopenable locket in the drawing room at 12 Grimmauld place, which really annoyed me cuz it, as well as what you said about MF, ruins the subplot of HPDH (which I had already read at the time I watched HP5–I finished HPDH at around 2AM on the 22, cuz I stayed up really late the 21 finishing it–would have finished it much sooner, but I work Saturdays from 8-4 (approximately, we often go later–sometimes a couple of hours later. But hey, it’s fun, everybody gets payed for the OT, and since I get $8/hr regularly, the OT is $12/hr. Not bad for a highschooler.))
I’m just gonna laugh at Chris Colombus when he has to direct six and seven. It’s gonna take him forever to cover it all up.
Maybe when I’m rich and famous I’ll make my own version of Harry Potter and not leave out anything *AHEM*.
Well, I might leave out a bit of stuff.
198: Is Columbus doing the sixth and seventh then? That’s good, despite the fact that all the critics think the first two movies, done by Columbus, were the worst, I think they were the best. The fifth was by far the worst, then the third, then the fourth, then the first two.
And yeah, when you’re rich and famous, you bloody well better make your own version not leaving anything out….and I would, of course, be more than willing to help…..
HP rocks!
My mom hasn’t read the books, but strangely she wasn’t too confused during the fifth one–probably cuz I only babble about HP 24/7. I do remember that when we watched the fourth one she was confused about which team won the Quidditch world cup–and y’know, the never really did come out and say it.
I told one of my coworkers one time (who hasn’t read the books) when she was talking about possibly seeing the movie, that anybody who hadn’t read the books would prob’ly be really confused watching HP5and I gotta go.
I dunno who’s doing the last two, I think it’s Columbus. I might be wrong.
Personally, I think the order in the movies from best to worst is: Fourth, Fifth, Third, Second, First. The first two made Harry and Co. seem really nerdy and dumb. [my opinon]
195 – a few corrections:
1. Actually, before the founding of Rome, Romulus killed Remus. Also, Romulus and Remus were raised by a wolf.
4. As a matter of fact, mal foy is Old French for bad faith. The modern day French is mal foi.
8. Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom.
9. Actually, her name was Persephone, and there is no connection whatsoever to HP.
10. Argus was Odysseus’s dog.
I might think of more later. You can also find a lot of this stuff on MuggleNet.
Ok, I have nothing to say except for that some of the characters were disgraced in the 4th and 5th movies. Bellatrix Black Lestrange is really not that ugly. Also, fun fact. Parseltounge is based on Aricara, a Native American language. Also HeWhoMustNotBeNamed is pwnsome.
But the lady that played Umbridge was like amazing. she was really froodily evil and awesome.
202-I know. She did a really awesome job. Who would think that pink could be so creepy? -shudders- (Besides the bunnies)
201: As to your corrections–1. ‘K, seem to remember that one killed the other….anyway, only real point was that Remus (and his alternate code name, Romulus) had a lot to do with wolves
4. REally? Cool–that makes their name even more significant–they had very bad faith to get involved with Voldie….
8. I thought it was her, not ‘Mione, that had something to do with wisdom
9. Persephone–that’s right. *pies self in face* Well, it is sort of similar…. Well, not really. Guess I”m not as smart as I sometimes like to think….Was Penelope by any chance the name of Odysseus’s wife? or am I totally on the wrong track again?
10. His dog–well, at least I got the story it was from right. Oh, um, in the greek (or whatever) story of the golden fleece, I s’pose I’m totally confused again in thinking the ship Jason and the argonauts was called Argus? I’m prob’ly just relating argus to argonauts here, and thus remembering a non-existing connection, but ya never know…..
Thanks for the corrections–I do like to try and make the things I say accurate–although I clearly am not always successful….
200: I used to dislike the fourth worse than the third, but after having rewatched in twice (I watch it annually–for, well, reasons that don’t really make any sense, but has to do with the fact that it was when we were watching HP4 that my dog, as she had gotten in the unfortuante habit of doing, tried to escape our back porch, and was hanging upside down by her hips for who knows how long–which resulted in her death the following day. Speaking of which I hate—oh, @#$%, I can’t tell you the name of the veterinarian I hate, cuz that would tell y’all exactly the very specific-ish vicinity of AK I live in–because the pop is small enough that you could prob’ly even trace me….Drat. I was so hoping to finally tell someone exactly how I feel about that, well, woman (and actually using her name. I think she is incredibly incompetent, and Ihold her fully responsible, and I’ve gone way off on a tangent, that most of you prob’ly couldn’t care less about….but it’s the time of year–my dog died ‘xactly two years ago 20 Nov.)
But anyway, I think 5 is by far the worst, but, hey, you’re entitled to you own opinion, so I think I’ll just shut up now. =)
Penelope was indeed the extremely patient wife of Odysseus.
205: Wonder what the connection is to Penelope Clearwater, then….or if, for once, the name of one of her characters doesn’t have a deeper meaning…..
Ah, yes, back to the name “Argus”: In the websters dictionary, defintion #4. ‘Any observant or vigilant person; a watchful guardian.’
Well, in my opinion, that describes Argus Filch perfectly.
Mundungus Fletcher: Def. of ‘mundungus’ is malodorous tobacco. MF is always smoking tobacco (or whatever exactly wizards smoke, that give off clouds of malodorous smoke)
Harry Potter: Harry is her favourite boys name; Potter is the last name of people she was neighbors with when she was a kid.
Vault 713, where the Philosopher’s stone was kept at Gringotts–this is her birthdate (minus the year) backwards (Europeans write dates day/month/year–so her b-day is 31/7, or 713 when reflected backwards…..continuing the theme of reflection stuff that permeates the entire HPPS–mirror of erised, engraved with a nonsense phrase, that backwards spells “i show not your face but your hearts desire”, etc.)
Anyways……I don’t have time to go look up any more HP names in the dictionary/babybook of names/latin dictionary/my semi-accurate memory/where ever…..
206 – I don’t see a connection, but one of the ten or so books I have that analyze HP (yes, I’m a bit obsessed) also makes this connection.
Also, one more correction to post 195:
20. Fleur Delacour actually means flower of the courtyard. The French word cour means courtyard. Coeur (I hope I spelled this right!) is the word for heart.
There will be no ‘next Harry Potter.’ I doubt that any book will ever grip the mass consciousness of the world again. I have come to believe this due to several facts:
1. Those who could be swayed so completely by a literary phenomenon are now, by definition, die-hard Harry Potter fans, and would never be convinced to like any book better.
2. Those who were not swayed by Harry Potter could not be swayed by another book with similar power.
3. The next generation of readers will fall into two major camps: a) those whose parents were Harry Potter fans and b) those whose parents were not. A will probably follow in the footsteps of the previous generation and become a Harry Potter fan. B might be affected by the previous generation’s scorn of the fanatical frenzy which HP fans demonstrated so often, and be unwilling to fall into the same “trap.”
Of course, there are exceptions to all, but exceptions are not the majority, and Harry Potter’s success depended on its appeal to the majority.
Conclusion: There will never be another HP.
208: Guess that’s what happens when I use my sister as a French dictionary….
You don’t sound any more obsessed than me…..I mean, c’mon, all those theories I wrote?????? And my WIP trivia game (findig 200 questions for HPDH was icnredibly simple…..now I just ahve to finish finding 200 for books 2-6…..), and my VERY horrible HP fanfic.
209: Oh, well, nothing could ever be as incredibly brilliant as HP, and I was planning on corrupting my children (once I have some, which is not in my plans for another half a dozen (or more) years) by turning them into madly obsessed HP fans like me anyways…..I actually plan on naming my first born daughter Ginevra (and also have girl names Lily and Rose picked out as well….gee, wonder where those could’ve come from). I have even promised my sister that when she has kids, I’ll turn them into pottermaniacs as well–oddly, though, she doesn’t seem particularly thrilled. But then, she seems to be heading toward the anti-potter crowd. Dumbledore being gay seems to’ve given her yet another reason to be less than thrilled about HP. Yes, my sister is a bit of a close-minded religious freak, but I’m afraid I have to love her anyway…..(even if I don’t agree with half the things she say/thinks–she even thinks kissing is “impure” and doesn’t plan to kiss anyone until/unless she’s married to them, and maybe not even then. LIke I said–psycho.)
210 – It’s a fairly common mistake. In fact, one of the counselors at French immersion camp, who claimed to be fluent in French, made the same mistake that you did and wouldn’t believe that my translation was correct when I told her.
I am so brainwashing my children with HP. I couldn’t decorate my room with posters when I was twelve, but when I’m married… oh boy, watch out future wife! A tempist comes your way.
209- what about if she wrote another book? could that be the “next harry potter”?
203- any one who was here on the 1st of april, 2007. bunneyblog.
214-That’s why I said “besides the bunnies”.
I wasn’t here, but I saw screenies of it a couple days later.
210- See what I mean? SEE? Perfect example of category 1 and potential parent of child A!
213- Let’s find out. Thought experiment follows.
CHILD A: Child of pottermaniacs
CHILD B: Child of potternotlikers
Child A would see Rowling’s new book in the store, think “OMGZ IT’S A NEW HARRY POTTER,” and pick it up. Five seconds later… “AW MAN IT’S NOT HARRY POTTER,” and put it down again.
Child B would look at the book. “Hmm, looks good,” and pick it up. Read it. Might buy it.
Parents see it, having read HP and thought little of it. “NO NO YOUR LITERARY TASTES WILL NOT BE CORRUPTED BY THAT PUBLICITY MONGERER, THAT PANDERER TO OUR WORST INSTINCTS, THAT INSULT TO TOLKIEN, PULLMAN AND JONES! GIVE ME THAT! TRASH!”
It might be argued that there is a third possibility, the child of potterindifferents, who would read it without bias. However, with this theoretical Child C, this situation would soon take place…
“Mom, what’s Harry Potter? Half the kids at school hate it, and the other half drool when they hear its name.”
“Harry Potter? Some book that came out when I was younger and made the author a zillionaire. I didn’t ever read it.”
“Hmm.” Child is curious. Reasoning as follows: ‘If she sold enough copies to become rich, it must be good.’ Child decides. “Can I go to the library?”
Child C reads Harry Potter, and immediately becomes either Child A or Child B.
Conclusion: Even Rowling could never write another Harry Potter.
215- thats odd. I didn’t see that…
212: If future wife is harry potter fan, then she wouldn’t mind in the least if you decorated with HP–as long as you left room for her HP decorations.
Just walking in my room you could tell that it is the bedroom of a pottermaniac (and a perfect example of the fact that all systems tend toward chaos, as you can’t see the floor in most places)–I’ve got HP curtains, an HP quilt, HP posters above my bed (its a canopy bed, so I just attach ’em to the bars that support the canopy (and between canopy and posters, there is red material, like a second canopy), blue crepe paper strung around the room next to the ceiling, an entire bookshelf filled with HP books (brit and US + HP related books), two HP boxes, as in a box from the release of HBP and one from DH, one filled with newspaper/magazine articles that involve HP, and one filled with stuff by me that involved HP as in theories, etc., and its got HP coloring books in it too–at some point, I will get around to hanging up the HP material I’ve got that depict Harry and Ron escaping the Dursleys int he Weasley’s flying ford anglia, and will get around to putting up the two posters I have advertsing DH at Borders–somebody actually donated them to the thrift store where my mom works–can you believe it?–and an HP train set (I bought it off someone I used to know for $10–it’s electric, and works great–unfortunately, I doln’t have a flat surfact big enough to set it up on, so it lives in the box), a Sirius Black wanted poster which hangs above my dresser, and lots more.
My mom gets me every HP thing that comes in at the thrift store where she works….and I plan to expand my HP collection from my bedroom to the entire house (once I have my own house)–so watch out future husband! Hee hee hee.
we should have a harry potter genetics thread.
cool =))
that’s a cool smiley, ‘cept I doubt it’ll work on here…..
that’s what I figured–it’s a smiely that rotfl
btw, penelope is defined as 1. odysseus’s wife 2. a patien woman 3. a woman who weaves
still dunno what that has to do with PC, but whatev
Hey GAPAs, check your email–did you get my awesome LtL sig–way late for the shirt contest, but save it for next time–and yes, I know, that doesn’t really have anything to do with this thread, so:
The HPSS mattel trivia game has lots of errors–hope I didn’t already point this out:
They spell Lily: Lilly, and call peeves a ghost –jkr specifically says he’s not a ghost–ask what people were bitten by NOrbert, to which the answer is given fang and ron–well, fang is a dog, not a person
also, who is the only person who can make peeves behave–the bloody baron–not a person, a ghost, etc.
Now this post ahs someothing to do with HP, so there!
221- *tolls* Sorry, you won’t know what that comes from. I made a typo for “rofl” as “tofl” and it was figured out that it meant “tolling on floor laughing”; you’re tolling someone for rolling on your floor without permission.
224-I can so imagion that.
“Hey! You shouldn’t be rolling around on the floor laughing. Stop that this instant. All right, five hundred dollar fine, hey! You asked for it. Or laughed for it.”
Nonono. Five hundred dollar toll. :eyeroll: And it’s not “the” floor, it’s my floor. So that’ll be a toll for not realizing that everything in the known and unknown universe. Thanks!
These extremist christian nutjobs were outside Harvard Square in boston saying that HP made kids be satanists. unintentionally funny.
i think that connecting HP to satanist stuff and watnot is stupid. no offence but if you look hard enough you will find what you’re looking for and half the time you just convince yourself it’s what you’re looking for and the words get twisted around and you wind up with several milion maniacs preaching different theories.
227 – I find it very weird that people want to ban HP, because it promotes love and friendship, not devil worship. Generally, churches support those things. Of course, I’m an atheist so I may not understand the who Satanist thing.
222-She’s got to be patient, to deal with Percy.
230: True, very true *pies self for not thinking of that*
Dedalus Diggle: In greek (I think greek) myths/legends, there is a man named Daedalus (dif spelling, but still). He’s the guy with the son named Icarus, he made the wings that him and his son used to escape wherever itw as, and his son ignored him and flew to close to the sun…..anyway, dunno the connection, but……
People weren’t worried about Satinism, I think they were more pissed off because HP introduces the Wicca religion to kiddies. Of course, I think it’s stupid, but there you have it. That’s what my mother’s objection to it was anyway.
Re: Dumbledore Being Gay- I think that he couldn’t have really been gay because his Patronus was a phoenix. And aren’t Patronus’ supposed to be representing the Patronus of somebody you love? This might make no sense to you but it does to me so I’m gonna shut up. Just stating my opinon.
233 – I think patronuses (patroni?) don’t necessarily represent someone you love, and certainly don’t need to represent someone you love romantically (eg Harry’s patronus represents his father).
Luna’s Patronus in the movie was a hare. Is that consistent with the book?
I read the 7th book in 6 hours!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but my sister got it first. I still havent seen the movie yet, but since its on dvd now i am hoping to get it soon…
234-I thought they do! Tonks patronous changed to Lupin’s, Snape’s was Lily’s, etc. Right?
235-Yup.
Xeno Lovegood: Xenos is the greek word for strange. That explains a lot.
237 – As I said, sometimes but not always.
After re-reading all the HP books I own (1, 2, 3, 5, 7) I have discovered a hole in the plot which I’ve never heard anyone mention before. And I don’t mean an inconsistency in the plot of a single book, or even the series. I mean a huge, gaping, raggedy-edged hole in the entire premise.
Put yourself in the position of a Wizarding leader somewhere in the world- for the sake of the argument, say the Ministre de Magie in Paris. There’s a horrible Dark wizard wreaking havoc just across the Channel. If England goes down, it’s unlikely that he’s going to stop there. Wouldn’t it be your highest priority to send in a crack team of whatever the French equivalent of Aurors are, and help the Order of the Phoenix to stop this menace? But according to J. K. Rowling, it isn’t. Despite the fact that Voldemort is indisputably an international threat, the only people trying to sort him out are the UK. Pardon me if I’m overreacting (almost certainly true), but it’s completely unrealistic.
Discussion?
240- the wisarding world is split, non?
241- That doesn’t enter into it. Even if they didn’t give a hair on a kneazle’s backside what happened to the Brits, Voldemort would pose a direct threat to them if England’s Ministry fell. And anyhow, the Wizarding complement of nations seem to be on pretty good terms. During the Triwizard Tournament in book 4, the Beauxbatons, Durmstrang and Hogwarts teachers are more cordial to one another than they would be if there was any hostility between their homelands. (Students are another matter, but that’s probably because some of their own number are competing against the representatives from other schools)
I have identified the source of my indifference to the Harry Potter books. Name almost any fantasy, and I can give an example of a consequence of using magic. Harry Potter, on the other hand, has no consequences. Oh sure, there’s danger around every corner, but that’s from outside forces. The magic itself never causes any problems. The first book set the stage for the entire series, and the first book was lighthearted, childish, and downright silly in spots. Think of the names!
It doesn’t move me.
240-I was guessing that there were people from other nations intervening, but certainly not with the Order of the Phoenix. They’re tight with big D, remember? If they helped anyone, it would by the good old MoM, who went down headfirst acording to the book. If I were the Ministre of Magica, I wouldn’t want my Aurors controlled by You-Know-Who.
And plus, there were supposedly non-Brits on Voldy’s side. When Ron posed as the guy who can’t speak English in book seven with Hermione/Bellatrix, Travers didn’t think anything of it.
244- I can understand your second point, but the first was a little bit unclear. Are you saying that they’d be helping the Ministry, but since the Ministry has fallen under Voldemort’s control, they’d be indirectly helping Voldemort?
235: Yes, Luna’s patronus was a hare in the books.
Beavo, I’m afraid I don’t quite understand your argument. Even if the patronus’ do represent the patronus of someone they love, couldn’t another man have a phoenix patronus? And so Dumbledore could still be gay?
Anyways, though, I don’t think they necessarily take shape of someone else’s you love. Ron’s is a terrier, but Hermione’s is an otter. They love each other, but they don’t take the form of each other’s. So, I think they just reflect something about the person. Jame’s stag reflects his animagus forms, Lily’s doe happens to reflect that she’s in love with a stag, Sev’s doe happens to be because of his undying and tragic love for Lily, Harry’s stag, the fact taht his father lives on inside him, Aberforth’s goat patronus, the fact that he has an odd fondness for goats, Arthur Weasley’s weasel patronus, well just look at his name. They don’t necessarily have to match the patronus of a loved one. Ron and Herm’s don’t match–they are the only couple I remember both patronuses for. THey just do occasionally
245-Yuh, that’s it. The Ministry’s against the Order of the Phoenix, and nobody listens to anyone else.
246-I dunno, it just makes some sor of sense in my confuddled mind.
and the phoenix? phoxe!
I didn’t spell that right.
Here’s another thought-provoker:
What if Voldemort had won?
if voldemort had won and Harry was killed, harry potter readers wouldn’t buy another book, thats what would happen. (Or at least I would do that anyway)
249 – I wouldn’t have minded too much as long as she had written it well.
250-I still would! I’d be sad because Harry died, but at leasts its probabable.
250, 251, 252- No, I meant more what would have happened in the story.
253- well, there would be no muggles.
254- So you think Voldemort would have gone on to conquer the world? Not just Europe or England?
255 – Yeah, probably.
Well, with all these countries falling under him… don’t you think the remaining Muggle community would become aware of it after a time?
257- as they say on the knight’s bus: “muggles only see what that want to.
258- But they’ll probably think that some crazed terrorist organization or something is responsible. They can’t explain the slaughter of half the English population as an “accident.”
255-With an ego like his, he would have tried to conquer Mars. Yes, I beive he would have tried to take over the world.
257-Of course, but he dosn’t care about them knowing. It would be to late to do anything about it anyway. The Death Eaters aren’t exactly, uh, “careful”.
Hey! There’s a new PPP! It’s called Wizard Swears, and dang it’s hilarious.
259- this was all happening during the serbia problem.
259 – “Nuclear bomb”
260 – Yeah, I saw that one a week or so ago. It’s funny.
262-It’s my favorite. *bleepbleepbleep*SOUP!*bleepbleepbleep*…
heck with mars! v-mort would have tried to find extraterrestial life forms just to kill\rule them.
‘k, slight change of subject–I’m taking a LOTR lit course, and I can’t help but noticing some similarities between HP and LOTR–I”m sure some are prob’ly in my mind, and don’t exist, but it’s interesting all the same.
First, Wormtongue, a confidante and follower of Sauramun (sp?), is described as treacherous and sly, in a future eval question–haven’t read that LOTR book recently, but anyway–Does this not remind you of WORMTAIL (name similarity if nothing else). He’s a follower of an evil wizard, and is rather treacherous.
Second, the locket horcrux possesses those who beocme emotionally close to it. THe ring possesses those who bear it (Smeagol/Gollum, Bilbo a little, Frodo, doh’t think it affected Sam too much, but don’t honestly remember)
3. In the poem Errantry, in Tales of Tom Bombadil, there are Dumbledors. In my Tolkien Beastiary, they are described as savage insects. I’m still puzzling out the relation to Dumbledore, but the name is so similar, surely there’s SOME connection?????
4. In “The Hobbit”, in Mirkwood a dark gloomy forest, Bilbo battles giant english speaking spiders–see any similarity to acromantulas of the forbidden forest??????
5. Also, Gandalf makes me think of Dumbledore–quirky, eccentric, has a smoke ring obsession where APWBD has a sherbet lemon obsession.
6. Also, In HBP, we have the Inferi in the lake in the Horcrux locket cave. In the second LOTR book, in the Dead Marshes, there are whitish bodies floating under the surface. This sounds pretty similar to me too.
7. According to my syllabus, Tolkien feels power corrupts, and his books supposedly relfect this–JKR seems to have a similar theme–Dumbledore’s quest for power, the DH’s, corrupted him for a time, Fudge and Scrimgeour are pretty corrupt, and Voldie, too.
8. In LOTR, the proprietors of the inn, the Prancing Pony are named Butterbur, this makes me think Butterbeer, from HP. An inn is like a pub, is like the Three Broomsticks, where thekids get Butterbeer.
9. ALso, gandalf’s fireworks at Bilbo’s eleventy-first b-day party make me think of the WEasley’s Filibuster Fireworks in HBP, that they set off to piss umbridge off.
So???? Whadda you all think? Am I imagining things, or is there some similarity? Feed back please!!!!!!
No feedback? *sniff, sniff* I’m gonna go cry….
Oh, well, what else do you expect on a virtually dead thread…..
Oh, yeah, I also figured out Squib–a squib is a firework that hisses than dies with a small explosion (of sound w/o light, I think, but not sure), or a fircracker that’s been broken in the middle and jsut hisses. So, a squib is basically a broken/incomplete firework/cracker. A Squib in HP is a broken/incomplete wizard/witch. Geddit?
Anyway, gtg, stuff to do…..
Hello, Luna! It’s good to see you. Once your comments scroll off the “Recent Comments” column, people won’t know they’re there. That’s a problem on older, less-frequented threads like this one.
I think you’ve done a fine job of analyzing parallels between the two series. JKR had undoubtedly read Tolkien before writing her books and might have included some of those references and similarities as deliberate tributes to him. Others might have been unconscious borrowings. And still others are common motifs in fantasies and myths going back centuries or millennia. For example, the idea of a ring or object that drives people mad with desire is common in ancient German and Scandinavian stories. Tolkien got the idea for his One Ring from the ring in Richard Wagner’s “Ring of the Niebelung” operas and the Volsung Saga that inspired them.
As for Dumbledore and Bombadil’s Dumbledors, that’s no mystery. In some parts of England (mainly Kent, I think), “Dumbledore” is an old-fashioned English word for a bumblebee. I remember reading somewhere that one of the foreign translations of Harry Potter (either French or Spanish, I’ve forgotten which) added a sentence saying that Dumbledore liked to hum to himself.
267: Interesting……Come to think of it, i think I remember reading something about Dumbledore and the name having something to do with a bumblebee. I suppose there are a few things about Dumbledore that you could liken to a bumblebee…..
I agree, as you said many themes of JKR’s are common in fantasy, such as a cloak of invisibility. I just recently reread my sister’s volume of Grimm’s fairy tales (an older version, with Cinderella’s sisters chopping toes and heels off to fit into the slipper). While doing so, I noted a couple of themes similar to those in HP. (Some of which I’d already noted previously.) There is, of course, all the evil kings and princes going crazy with desire for gold and silver and other things. I also noted that I had rather lost my taste for fairy-tales. There’s too much butchering of innocents, and corrupt heroes, and not quite satisfactory endings. In one tale, the king butchers his two children, just to bring back to life a faithful servant. Honestly! The man, no matter how faithful, was only a servant. Surely your own flesh-and-blood children should be considered more precious? (all right, so the children came back to life, but still.)
Then, of course, we have the Shoemaker and the Elves. The little elves, stark naked, make shoes for the man, excellent quality, which he sells, eventually becoming well-off. He decides to reward the little elves by giving them clothes. Yet, as soon as they have the clothes, they leave, deciding that with clothes of their own they have no need to slave for another. Bit like house-elves and being set free by being given clothes, huh?
Additionally, the theme I had previously noticed. In the Deathly Hallows, in the “Tale of the Three Brothers” we learn of Antioch, Cadmius, and Ignotus Peverell. These three brothers (a common theme in fairty tales, the questers always seem to ocme in threes), set out for whatever reason, and meet Death, who speaks to them (“Sorry, but death speaks to them?” /”It’s a fairy-tale, Harry.”). The three brothers request an object each from Death. As in all fairy-tales, the youngest brother is the only one who chooses wisely (it’s always the youngest who com[pletes the quest, usually winning a lovely royal bride, while the elder brothers meet some sticky end), while the others choose out of greed. So it has been, and so it always will be (that’s a quote from something, I think, dunno what). Also, in a couple fairy-tales, one of the three objects requested by the three questing brothers was a cloak that makes the wearer invisible.
*laughing maniacally* I just watched ppp wizard’s swears. It’s hilarious!!!!! “You floppy wanded dementor buggerer!”
268- I think that the house-elves were deliberately taken from the fairy tale you mentioned.
And I agree with Robert that you’ve done a good job of analyzing parallels.
270–quite possibly. And thank you
Let’s just hope the teacher likes my analysis of the parallels as well, since I have to write journal entries on all the books (two for hobbit, 10 for each of the trilogy, all a minimum of two pages). I wound up with 20 pages for hobbit, and 20 for the fellowship, and of course i commented on everythin I thought was similar between them and HP. 40 pages of LtL rambling–and I just finished proofing it all–NOT a fun way to spend two hours. Hopefully the teach likes it–and doesn’t get sick of hearing about HP parallels!
269 – Yes. It’s HILARIOUS!!!
265- My dad pointed out some of those…
HARRY POTTER <3
The character annoys me, but the books RULE!
(they deserve capitals.)
Another interesting Harry Potter fact:
You know the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in HP 5, Dolores Umbridge? Did you know that “dolor” in Spanish means pain?
no wonder. She is a pain.
275 – Yup, I knew that. It makes sense.
She was potrayed so awesomely in the OOTP movie.
277-Yes, except they didn’t get her quite toadlike enough.
*runs to room* *checks book* Yes, toadlike.
278 – My former Home Ec. teacher would do nicely if you want “toadlike”.
278- I suppose. Her office and costumes were great, though.
To me, the movie’s normal-looking Umbridge is more interesting. Making villains ugly is too easy. And I loved her collection of cat plates.
281 – That’s an interesting view.
And I haven’t even SEEN the fifth movie.
Of course, one of the distinctive things about the Harry Potter books is that even many of the good, sympathetic characters are odd-looking and/or careless about their personal hygiene.
283 – True.
283 – Luna! <3
285 – Yes, Luna ROCKS.
Luna is my fav character, other than Tonks and Hermione. I made a ‘butterbeer’ *cough cough wine cough cough* cork necklace and wear it everywhere. I also make earrings out of radishes (I have to make new ones every few days because they rot).
287- I thought our own Luna was the most rabid Potter fan we had, but you’d give her a run for her money.
If she shows up again, you should challenge her to a “HP Trivia-Off.”
“Who saw a Grim and died 24 hours later, mentioned in Prisoner of Azkaban and Deathly Hallows?”
“Bilius Weasley! On which species does butterbeer have an intoxicating effect, mentioned in Order of the Phoenix?”
“House-elves! Which character… ” etc.
288- Ohh, I would play that.
I’m not quite as rabid a fan as MissSwann and Luna seem to be, however. Though I have memorized quite a few facts from the books and regularly stalk Harry Potter fanart websites.
288-I knew both without having to look them up.
I’m a pretty hardcore fan too, but I have to tone it down a bit because my parents think I’m already too much into the occult. Which I’m not. I just think it’s interesting.
-278 I agree. But her attitude was PERFECT!!!!!!!!
here’s a quiz:
Is Hagrid described as being giant, or huge?
Ë™pÇsn os×ŸÉ sı ÇƃnÉ¥ Êžuıɥʇ ı ʇnq˙˙˙˙ʇuÉıƃ
Who lies about a flobberworm?
ÇqqÉɹɔ ʇuÇÉ”uıʌ
This character is one of the earliest impostors in HP. Who is it?
˙ɹɾ ‘ɥɔnoɹɔ snıɯÇʇɹÉq
I’ll think of more later.
*holds up fists* I betcha I could give LtL a run for her Galleons! Bring it on!!! (GAPAs, new thread devoted to HP Trivia Off? Plzzzzz? We didn’t have any special threads devoted to JKR’s/Harry’s birthdays… plzzzz?????????????)
OH, I could be decent *coughawesomecough* at an HP Trivia-Off.
Ok, I am officially scarred for life. I just found a Ron/Ginny fanfiction.
294 – That is messed up.
294- OH PLEASE NO KTHXBYE.
That’s got to be nearly as bad as Snape/Hermione. Of which I read one SINGLE fanfic, but never again.
Ever.
294- Incest + fanfiction = EW.
296- It’s worse; at least Snape and Hermione aren’t related. But it’s admittedly not as bad as Harry/Hagrid. *shudder*
298- Harry/Hagrid? URGH.
Anyone remember Sparklypoo? I’m still laughing.
“There can be only one.” I remember.
301- Yes, I’ve noticed that the MA RPG has been getting… a bit off. Don’t worry, at the Lunar campus we have no truck with that!
296- Wung, I forgot to end the HTML. At least it gets the point across, I suppose.
Sparklypoo? As in Pirate Monkey Sparklypoo?
???
Harry Potter rpg!!! go to harrypotterunvierse.tk, but it doesn’t seem like it’s up yet.
288: “I thought our own Luna was the most rabid Potter fan we had, but you’d give her a run for her money.”
Thank you, POSOC, i was very please when I read that–I really like the description! =)
292: Bring it on! Sounds like fun.
287 – They’re not radishes, they’re dirigible plums. My ears aren’t pierced, but when I saw a plastic/ceramic/hard material orange radish-like earring at a sort of school carnival, I was very tempted to buy them. Thank goodness I didn’t, but my friend bought several pairs plus a pair of radish earrings.
I am in no way a rabid Potter fan, but my two relatively rabid friends decided to nickname me Luna – this is a name by which I have never actually been called, it’s more of a ceremonial name. They decided that this was a perfect fit because of my eccentric and somewhat ditsy manner, as well as my belief in ghosts and such things (the links to these attributes were discovered by a comment I made basically involving “like having friends”)
294 – OH. MY. GOD. That is REALLY screwed up. So is snape/hermione and harry/hagrid.
Sweet. Mugglenet is having a 2008 election for Minister of Magic. Here are the current candidates:
Wizocrats:
Lucius Malfoy
Hermione Granger
Hogicians:
Kingsley Shacklebolt
Slughorn
McGonagall
Molly Weasley
Here’s the voting schedule (all votes done through the Mugglenet poll):
Sept. 23 – Harry v. Hermione (Hermione won – dammit)
Sept 26 – Lucius Malfoy v. Umbridge (Malfoy won – good, I’ll take him over Umbridge by a long shot)
Sept. 30 – Molly Weasley v. Horace Slughorn
Oct. 2 – Kingsley v. McGonagall
Oct. 7: Wizocrats finals
Oct 14: Hogicians finals
Nov. 4 (yay): election day
VOTE NOW!
309- Language, I-Man!
294/308. Yeah, I’ve come across all of those and worse….like Fred and George, and Fred and George and Ron. Some people have rather twisted imaginations…..
If I had to choose just from the list you have, I’d say I would want McGonagall or Hermione.
309–I should probably keep my mouth shut, but–there is nothing wrong with his language!!!! Jeez
309 – What’s wrong with his language?
From reading these comments on fanfics, I doubt I’ll ever read another, ever. EVER.
312–presumably he objects to the usage of the word “god”. As far as fanfics, I wouldn’t worry too much–most sites post a description of fanfics, with ratings. Firstly, if you stick with age appropriate fanfics (as in, avoid the “adult” HP fanfics–I think you can imagine what those are without me explaining), they usually don’t have anything potentially scarring, and if they are a ‘shipping fanfic, they almost always post the major ‘ships in the description–so it is very hard to accidentally read a disturbing fanfic. Just don’t read ones that mention couples you aren’t comfortable with–that’s what I do. Skip the ones with twisted couples and you should be fine.
313 – Ohhhhhkay, thanks. *goes off to read a few fanfics*
308-*squeel!!!!* *runs off to Mugglenet.*
312- he also said damn.
309- he said ‘dammit’ that’s all. It’s not a great offense, really.
316- That’s the one I meant.
