I love the picture! Very cool.

Last night was the first night of Hanukkah, and I got the best presents ever! A Wii (+ Guitar Hero) and typewriter. Typewriters are so amazing… I adore computers, of course, but somehow typing things on typewriters seems so much more authentic, no?
And of course, the Wii is great for obvious reasons. Technically it’s only half mine (it was a joint present for my sister and me) but nonetheless, I love it.
I imagine I’m sounding really gift-fixated right now, so somehow I doubt people will believe me if I say that my favorite part of Hanukkah actually isn’t the presents. It’s lighting the candles, playing dreidel, singing Hanukkah songs, and doing other things that make me feel like I’m carrying on a tradition. Not that I mind the gifts, of course. ;)

Good morning, everyone. I have some news. My grandmother is having surgery this morning at 11, and the doctors aren’t sure of how the outcome is going to be or…if she’s going to make it through the surgery, so we need extra support and prayers today. We’re really hoping for something good, a holiday miracle,if you will. Thanks very muchly, I hope all your holiday elebrations are going well.

For Hanukkah last night, I got a new camera! Yayness! I was going to use the memory card that I have, but it turns out this is a Sony camera and so it only takes some weird “MemoryStick” format so right now my camera only holds four pictures. Blergh.

4- I have a typewriter but the ribbon’s broken so it doesn’t work and I’m VERY SAD. Who nowadays fixes typewriters? I sure don’t know.

I love this wreath! I can’t tell which is my favorite…I love them all! this one is pwnsome. Lovely work, Lady B.!
Cold today. 20F and I was running around outside with my sleeves pulled up and no jacket……then I noticed the thermometer.
I have very green fingernails today. I cut them (finally! they were getting way too long) and painted them for Christmas with the only color I have–green. It’s a very pretty dark metallic green, so it works perfectly and it will go with what I’m planing on wearing for the next few days.
And ohh, we leave tomorrow. In the evening after dad gets home. And then we drive all night. 14 hours in the car in the middle of the night going through blizzards is not my idea of fun. >_<
Hopefully I’ll have a little more space though, since we’re borrowing Grandma’s van.
I miss riding the train though….that was always so much fun, but we’ve driven the past few times. *sigh*

22~ I’m leaving the computer now, but I’ll be thinking of you. *more hugs* I really hope she’s doing well.

21~ Oh. I guess I don’t get a share in it then……my poor mother is constantly having fits when I write only one draft and then say I’m done. what she doesn’t realize is that I am constantly making adjustments and corrections as I go, so by the time I’m done with a first draft I’m pleased with I copy it on clean paper (my first writings always look like heck by the time I’m done with them, eraser crumbs are only the beginning…) and turn them in.
“Oh, this is good, but what happened to the rest of your papers?”
“What? That’s it. That’s all, the others are illegible to all but me.”
“But, your first and second drafts, where are they? All there is is this nice copy of the beat up pages…..is this your first draft?”
“No, that’s the finished piece, I write all the drafts at the same time, don’t you see? I rarely have to make huge changes in the structure of the thing, since I start out with what I want it to end like in mind.”
“Oh…..but aren’t you told by your workbook to write several drafts? I was always told to make several.”
[resigned] “Are you trying to tell me it’s no good?”
“No, no, of course it’s good, I like reading what you write, but I thought you were supposed to write several drafts!”
“Is it good enough or do I have to start all over again? If so I’d better get back to work.”
“No, it’s fine, it all works together nicely, good job.”
    “Um, thanks. What’s for dinner?”

Not word for word, but variants of this conversation have taken place more times than I can recall. *sigh* Please tell me, does anyone else write something and keep it mostly intact, making changes as they go and deciding nearly exactly how you want to say what you’re trying to express before putting pen to paper, or am I just lazy and overconfident of my writing skills? (Which I don’t really even think are that great, by the way. I can make people laugh and mostly get across the point I’m trying to make, but anyone can do that, and many can do it thousands of times better than I.)

I would also start checking out colleges, and I would make an Excel spreadsheet of them, if you can. Include on it the name of the college, whether you could commute or not, how much scholarship money you could get from them, and other things of special interest (i.e. sports, clubs, etc.). 51. (32, 45) Thou readest aright. Some lines from the wreath and its background:

    ‘Twas the night before MuseBlog

‘Twas the night before Koko stole all the pies
And the Muses were gathered with tears in their eyes

When what to our pie-slathered eyes should appear
    A sleigh full of doughnuts…

The pie shields were placed at the entrance with care
And everyone hoped Kokopelli they’d snare

While Urania in her toga and Pwt with his net
Crept toward the place where they knew Koko kept

His cheeks were like shadows, he hadn’t a nose
His hair stood in spikes in two perpendicular rows

He spoke not a word, but got straight down to business
And pied me until I keeled over from dizziness

The lines Robert quoted were actually an improvement over some earlier drafts, such as:

    O MuseBlog blog of blogs

I think that I shall never see
A tree as lovely as a blog

A blog is nothing like a tree
    Except they both have logs

By the way, the bow was real, created by stapling the scraps into loops, then stapling a bunch of loops together. The red coloring was added digitally.

    Okay, so fun story time!!

Me and my 3 best friends (Lee, D, JB) went to a glass blowing place yesterday, and then to the mall. We went to stores, walked around ect until we ended up in Gamestop looking for a present for JB’s little brother. While she was buying a game, me and Lee were standing behind her at the regester, talking. Lee was complaining that she felt like a slut for something or other (she’s not, at all)), and the guy behind the regester kind of gave us an odd glance (he had awesomely long hair in a ponytail, glasses, young (20ish?) was wearing all black, not all tat bad looking in a geeky sort of way).

So a while later we were sitting at a table on the edge of the foodcourt, waiting for Lee’s mom to meet up with us. Then I notice Gamestop Lad (what I thougt of him when I saw him again XD) walk past beind us, and this is the resulting dialogue:

    Jade: Haha look it’s GamestopLad!!
    Lee/JB/D: Where?!
Jade: Walking behind me, look over my shoulder, he’s headed to my left.
*GamestopLad walks past us, carrying a set of keys and a box*
    Lee: Haha it is!
JB: We should do someting random when he walks back.
Lee: I should pretend to be pregnant!
    *laughter on all sides*
    JB: OMG let’s do it!
    Lee: Yes!
Jade: It’s perfect, since he overheard you complaining about you being a slut :eyeroll:
Lee: He did? When did I say that?
D: You’re not atually going to do this, are you?
    Lee: Oh yes we are!
    *Lee’s mother arives*
Lee: Mom guess what we’re going to do!
Lee’s mother: Do I want to know?
JB: Well don’t freak out at anyting we say.
    *much plotting follows*

    *10 minutes later*
    Lee: Where is heee
    JB: OMG he’s coming back!!
*GamestopLad comes walking back, without box*
Me: Oh gods– here we go.
    D: *winced*
    Lee: 3…2…1…!
JB: (screaming) OH MY GOD, YOU”RE PREGNANT?!?!
Lee: Stop yelling it! (also yelling, and watcing over shoulder for GamestopLad’s expression)
GamestopLad: *head turns towards us, mouth drops open, realizes he’s looking and walks quickly away)
JB: (continuing) I can’t believe you told us this in a
    food court!
    *all dissolve into laughter*
    Lee’s mother: Oh god.

Of course, having go this far, we couldn’t yet let it go.

Lee: Oh man, what if we went to that maternity store, and just got a bag, and went back into Gamestop?
    JB: Omg yes!
    D: You’re not really…
Jade: Why would we be going in there again though?
    Lee: I dunno.
JB: We’ll figure it out on the way.

So we go into this SomethingMotherhood storeand get just a bag with the store name on it (the lady gave us a very odd look) and head back to Gamestop. We decided that D was going to look around for a bit then ask some questions about Rock Band II (she’s going to get it sometime but everywhere is sold out till like march –_–). Then we were going to be talking kind of near the regester (tiny store so it’d be hard not to be) but not really obviously, just saying things that might hint at really awkward if you knew what we were talking about which, he would XD

*Me, Lee, JB, D go inside*
*D kind of looks around, we stand by a shelf kind of close to where he is and slowly inch colser. Lee has maternity store bag slightly idden under her coat*
    (talking hushed but audible)
Lee: Well it’s not like I meant to
JB: How did you find out?
Lee: How do you think? I was late…
JB: Have you told, um, I mean…
Lee: Of course it’s Jakes. And no.
D: (comes back by us) I can’t find rockband.
Jade: Look on the top shelves.
D: Oh, look, there it is. Can’t see the price though… wait, that one’s not for Wii.
*all move closer to let someone through aisle*
JB: Well, I thought you were, y’know, safe…
Jade: (louder) I can’t believe you’re talking about this here
GamestopLad: (has been studiously ignoring us, but winces a bit)
Lee: *croses arms so maternity store bag is painfully obvious and close to him*
Diana: (to him) Do you sell Rockband 2? For Wii?
    GamestopLad: Yes we do!
JB: Are you going to keep it?
Jade: Well she can’t exactly return it, can she?
GamestopLad: (tries not to look at bag but keeps glanicng up at it) And, um, do you want just the game?
D: No, I need the instruments as well
GL: Oh, sorry, we’re all sold out
D: Oh. Thanks anyway. (to Me/Lee/JB) They don’t have it.
    (stop talking)
    Jade: They don’t? Too bad.
    JB: Though with your condition–
    Lee: Shut up!
All: *leave store. Crack up. High fives*

Made the night. It was epicly awesomely fun XD

85 (Lizzie)- A chiton was a garment worn in ancient Greece. It was a lot like a tunic, but ankle to floor length, rather than at the knee. It was worn by women and men, although how it covered the wearer and some stylistic details were different. The Romans wore an equivalent, but it was called a “stola”.

To everyone who responded to/laughed at post 70- Yeah, it was a lot of fun, though I wasn’t to sure about doing it at first ^^ But JB and Lee are huge drama people, and Me and D are into it a bit as well (though we’re both techies), so we pulled it off pretty nicely.

We celebrated Christmas today with my imidiate family (how I found out about my Christmas/birthday present–the camera I mentioned on the Visual Arts thread, the Canon Rebel XS DSLR), and then drove up the town where like half of my relatives live, and are spending Christmas here.

Then the day after me and mom are flying out to Connecticut for one of my hockey tournaments –_–
She’s taking me to several colleges while we have free time… I should be more thrilled about that probably but I just don’t want to think about any of it. *sigh* But I think we’re going to look at Wesleyan(uhg spelling), Yale?, drive through Harverd maybe, Boston something, and another I think. Meh.

    Happy holidays, everyone!

JS, re: 70- we did that same sort of thing at the mall here for a psychology class I did in the summer. Different groups of us went all over the mall to see how people reacted. Some of the groups had people dressed in various ways (one of which was pregnant) would go into different stores and rank them by kindness to everyone. The nicest store was Hot Topic and meanest Aeropostale. My group went around and did a lot of little things. One of our things was having a light saber fight in the middle of the mall. Another was walking into different stores (we did go to a game stop) with different different groupings holding hands. (two girls, a guy and two girls, a guy and a girl) At a food court we had one of us sit by herself and pretend to be crying while the rest of us watched to see how people reacted. They usually looked at her but then glanced away and pretended not to notice.

  137. (137) Psychology classes are always trying things like that. Once when I was in ninth grade, reading alone at a round table in the school library, a girl sat down opposite me and opened a book. After a few minutes, she moved one seat closer. A few minutes more, she moved one seat still closer. I figured out what was going on (it was clear that she was just pretending to read) and decided that when she got within range, I would run the tip of my shoe down her leg and see how she reacted. Unfortunately, I misjudged the distance and accidentally kicked her instead. She leaped to her feet, purple with shock. I said, “That was for psychology class, right?” She nodded and left the library in a hurry. I wonder what kind of grade she got on that assignment.

I FINALLY got earrings I can wear without pierced ears. But I only have 2 pairs of clip on earring backs, and they’re sterling silver. And my mom thinks only the ones I’ve got on now are going to be comfortable, so I went on the web site, and they cost $30 a pair. I think I have enough to buy 6 pairs, but that’s not that many. I couldn’t find the other pair online, seeing as there wasn’t a tag on those, so I’m not sure what they’re made of or how much they cost… but some of the ones on the site sold for $10 for a bag of 100, so I’m not too sure what’s up with that… all it said was that they were silver-plated.

-cool bouncy ball that looks like a snowglobe with stuff inside that moves when you shake it (might sound weird but it’s really cool and addicting)
    -a stocking full of candy

I’m flipping out about the new guitar. I can’t wait to play it, because yesterday we had people over and I couldn’t use it. Then, we went to the hospital to be with my grandmother for about five hours. She seems to be doing better. We brought her cookies, and a new blanket and an Ireland calendar for her boring old hospital room. We watched ‘A Christmas Story’ on her TV and had a grand old time laughing and chatting. I was so sad when we had to leave. I feel really sorry for all those people in the hospital on Christmas without family and friends there to be with them, and I’m glad I could be there for my grandmother in her time of need, especially when this might be her last Christmas.

Well. To preserve my remaining tatters of sanity I decided that hiking about a mile or so to the the library in the snow carrying a computer was a small price to pay, so here I am.

My Christmas was pretty good, woke up, got dressed, hung around because mom wanted to get more sleep. Then we had breakfast, did the dishes, and more hanging around since grandma hadn’t wrapped the presents yet.
Then we opened them, taking several hours (it always does, we go in a circle and every gift gets talked about for at least 10 minutes before the next is opened). After that we all disappeared to our own corners (me to go read and listen to my new CDs) and then resurfaced for an early dinner, dispersed again, and in the evening watched White Christmas (with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye), took baths and went to bed. Exciting, no?

The snow here is lovely, when I walked to the library it was banked up to my waist in some places along the sidewalk, what fun! It’s melting though. :(

Some of these presents are shared, yes, but all in all, it’s really quite over the top, especially when the economy is failing and my dad lost his job and my grandparents are retiring… Not that I’m complaining.

I changed my name in honor of the crazy awesome book I got for Christmas! (The Tales of Beedle the Bard)

70- Not all of this story relates to your comment but w/e.

Ok so my family and I were in church for the Christmas Eve service and I was ‘reflecting on my day’ (I was bored and my mind was wandering) and I started to think about how Jadestone and her friends were pretending someone was pregnant and they were all like “Who’s the father?”. At the moment I was thinking about that we were saying the Lord’s prayer and we came to the word “father” and I stared cracking up! I was sooooo embarrased.

So then there was this exceedingly cute boy about my age who was an acolyte and it came to the part of the service where the congregation goes around and everyone shakes hands and says “peace be with you” to each other. And so this exceedingly cute boy comes over to shake my hand. 8) So I was all like “YAY!!!!” until he came over and we shook hands. Insert minor blushing and mucho awkwardness here. Yeah. Shaking another teens hand is so… I don’t know… it’s just weird. So once again I was cracking up at the awkwardness of it all.

I think everyone at my church thinks I have problems now.

Oh well. I got a good laugh out everything.

Sitting on my couch + listening to Coldplay on my iPod (1st gen nano!!!) + MuseBlogging + going to mess with some html codes + going to read The Tales of Beedle the Bard = HEAVEN!!!!!!

I had a lot of other things to respond to, but I don’t quite remember where I last posted/what I responded to then/what I actually intended to respond to at the begining of this post, but while I wrote all that I forgot what I was going to say anyway.

I’m in COnnecticut now, on the hockey tournament. It’s the biggest girls one in the US, like 1300 people and manymanymany teams (all age groups). We played the best team in the US this morning (they win this tourn every year, and nationals as well) and lost, of course, but as it was at 7 am we had a lot of free time the rest of the day.

So me, mom, a teammate, and her mother went to go wander around the campus of Wesleyan University and Yale. We couldn’t really go in any buildings as they were all locked up for break, but I rather liked the two. Yale was busier, with more streets, though a lot of stores closer to things whereas Wesleyan was more spread out. Both had beautiful beautiful architecture, especially Yale, and I took a lot of pictures (sadly not with my new lovely DSLR, we left that at home so it wouldn’t get hurt).

We also drove from there to a college called Sacred Heart, which looked nice on the website but actually was rather small and dull-looking and appeared to be an assisted living facility for the elderly if you’re going to guess what it was from the looks of the buildings.
But we did have fun making the pros/cons list:

    Pros:
    – Very tidy, not a lot of litter
    – Not a lot of things to distract you from your studies, such as an actual campus, architecture, bright colors (other than dentist’s mask green), stores/things to do, ect
    – Lots of security guards around to ensure safety
    – A nice, tall iron fence around the facility to keep out unwanted visitors
    – The surrounding neighborhood isn’t one you’d want to walk around in in the dark or after classes anyway!
    – A conveneint ravine to throw yourself into when you get sick of the place (the railing didn’t stop the car already there, so there’s even a great spot to jump!)
    Cons:
You know, I bet you can just guess them.

Then we went down to the ocean and only got lost once. We found some cool shells, and I found crabs, and took more pictures then went back to the hotel.

Coincidentally the room next to ours (adjoining, aka no soundproofing) is filled with four unsupervised U14’s from a hockey academy in Ontario who enjoy staying up till early hours screaming and running about,. Also coincidentally if you see me on the news pleading for bail for murder help me out okay?

Needless to say I thought it was hideos, as did my mother, but as I was looking at it (reading the information) several women passed by me, pointing at the aweful necklace and exclaiming how much they loved it. Well to each her own I suppose.

On an entirely different note. I walked into my bathroom and smashed my hand on the corner of the counter. Right in that tender spot between the thumb and pointer finger. 238- That’s a big decision to make. As for the friends part, I’ve found that most of my friends are female (I am male), but smart boys are just as easy to talk to as girls. I’m assuming that all of the girls at Mary Baldwin are smart, so it should be no problem, if you show them that you’re not interested in having a “girly” friendship, or what have you.
Also, I’d be wary of the lack of homesickness. Usually I’m fine, but other times (if I’m nervous) I can’t handle it, and have to break off contact with my family to stay happy, but that’s not really a good solution.

238- talking to girls: this sounds cheesy but just be yourslef. Gender doesn’t matter so much anymore at your age. It gets easier. I used to only have girl friends. then I hit highschool and started having friends of both genders. Being yourself is the easiest way to talk to people. being comfortable in your own skin.

253- take the guinea pig to the pet store and ask them to fix it but first do a bit of reasearch about this disease. make sure they take it into the veterinary department, not just some random room where they watch it die and then give you a refund. my sister’s hamster had wet tail (a fatal disease) when we got it and it is cheaper for the pet store to give you a new one than cure it, so that is what they will do unless you make sure they take it to the veterinarian part and give it medication thet works (some dosent, the internet told us) they will just give you a new one. it will probably have to stay there for a while but they might let you visit it. we got to visit socks. and also, if it is contagious, seperate yor piggies so the other one dosen’t get it. good luck!

    What is CTD?
Well, I’m not you, but here’s what I feel about that sort of thing. There’s no need to start early; life is long. Seriously, you don’t need to go to college when you’re sixteen, or however old you are. High school can suck, but it’s an important development stage. I mean, why bypass it when all that comes after college is a job? Not that a job is necessarily bad, but you’ve got the rest of your life to work. If you don’t like your school, get involved in other stuff. And as for all girls… well, as I guess you know, guys are fun to be friends with. It’s important to have a balance of girls and guys. I find that too many of one all cooped up together become unpleasant.

A feat that catches the eye,

Her parents are…. were…. divorced. What are she and Mina going to do?

She didn’t even tell me her mom was sick.

I’m trying to IM some of my friends but nobody except Shannon, who changed schools last year, is online. I really want to do something nice for Chloe, and I was thinking of getting together a bunch of people to do something nice for her when she gets back to school.

Maybe she won’t be in school.

What if she can’t afford tuition anymore? (we go to private school)

Well, her dad is a brain surgeon…

She may not be in school on the 5th, though. If I were her I wouldn’t want to go to school for the whole of January.

Thanks for all the support/advice/hugs for Chloe, guys. I found out the memorial service is at Temple C—— (I assume it’s her temple) on Friday. I really don’t know if I should go or what. The only two people I’ve been able to IM don’t even know- Jasmin only IMed me to ask for the science data, which I don’t have, and Kaitlyn only wanted to rant about how much her brand-new braces hurt. I’m pretty sure neither of them know.
The person I really need to get ahold of is Aoife. She’s the nicest girl in my class, and her dad is (gulp) the school counselor. So he’d probably have told her. The one problem is, if anything we planned to do for Chloe involved going to Aoife’s house, I’d have to pass on that one- her dad hates me. He’s a real jerk. I’ll tell you guys someday.
When I found out that Chloe’s mom was dead, I realized how lucky I am to have a mom and dad who still love each other, and who are healthy. But it also made me sad, and scared, because what would happen to me if my mom or dad died? My uncle Mark died of cancer when I was younger. I barely knew him. My aunt Debi remarried a few years later. I really don’t know what it was like for my cousins, but I can imagine it must be really bad.
Somehow, I feel like I might never see Chloe again. My only means of contact with her is her IM, but obviously she’s not going to be online. And even if she is at school, she’s not in any of my classes. I really want to do something to help her, but I don’t even know her cell number- I don’t even know if she has a cell phone at all. And I can’t very well use the number in the school directory, since who knows where she’s living now?
Ohh, nooo. I just remembered her telling me her dad has a girlfriend!!!!

  362. (363) If you do attend the service, be aware that family members may be in a state of semi-shock and not fully realize you’re there at the time. But your presence will count, It is comforting to have people show up. Somehow it helps affirm that the loss means something, that it did not go by unnoticed. If you can’t go to the service, send a card. A card is nice, in any case.

Your idea about doing things with her after school starts back up is a good one. The family can be in something of a protective bubble during the immediate aftermath, but later people tend to drift away and go back to their own lives, and that’s when the hard part begins. (Some people become reclusive in mourning, so don’t be discouraged if it takes more than one try to get Chloe to participate.)

    365~ Happy new year!

We went to some antique stores today, ’twas fun. I found a dress in one of them that was very pretty, it was black velvet with gold trim around the neckline and hem, knee length and had detached sleeves (it had spaghetti straps) that had more gold trim around the top edge to match the neckline, which they met on the sides and accentuated. The bodice was lightly boned to keep the shape and it was tailored to fit just so. Very formal, and very pretty.
I tried it on and it fit just about perfectly, the only two things that weren’t quite right was that the sleeve tops were a little tight and it was a tiny bit long in the torso, so the hips were a little low. Other than that it could have been made for me. And it was only $40. I didn’t get it though, Heather thought it was gorgeous and made me look sexy (if anything could that would do it) and Mom just laughed at me when she saw it and said it was funny and wouldn’t it be a good joke for New Year’s eve here celebrating with just the three of us.
I did like it, but I’d never be allowed out of the house in it, not while my mom is living at least. Ah well. I took a few pictures with my phone, but I couldn’t get the whole dress.

Did the supposedly awesome new ball at Times Square work? They didn’t show it when we watched on CNN’s website, and someone else didn’t see it on TV either.

Best wishes for a great 2009 to all of my fellow bloggy friends out there! :P I’m looking forward to spending it with you all.
