First post? i dont know… I also dont know if anyone commented on my “Standard of Living” comment from the last Music thread. Anybody heard of them?
ooh, new thread! the possibilities…
hmm…does anybody here like kings of leon? i’m pretty much in love with them. especially the songs On Call, Knocked Up, and Revelry
i LOVE the song Knocked Up!!!!!
I’m listening to “Hey Schoolgirl/Black Slacks” by Simon & Garfunkel. They’re still my latest musical obsession, since around September I’ve been listening to them almost nonstop, with breaks for some maritime music that I’ve gotten recently.
Since I’ve never really posted on the Music thread before, here are some of my favorite artists: (no particular order)
Jason Mraz
Jack Johnson
Sheryl Crow
The Beatles
Billy Joel
Bob Marley
KT Tunstall
Sara Bareilles
James Taylor
Fleetwood Mac
Dave Matthews
I love pretty much all types of music, so I like a lot of artists.
4~ Of 114 albums in my iTunes collection (and some of the albums only are one or two songs, but most are full length) I have 159 artists (some of which are listed twice, for various reasons, but still….), so I can completely understand liking lots of different people’s music. I also enjoy drastically different types of music, for example on the last thread I noted that I have, and enjoy, music from such different artists as the Rolling Stones to Stan Hugill (a chantyman whose work is idolized by many traditional singers) to Joshua Bell. Listening to my music on shuffle is a very odd experience.
Hmm, I’ve been thinking lately about how I listen to music, and wonder how others do.
I’ve recently started liking Taylor Swift a little bit. The lyrics to her songs are nice enough, and it’s not similar at all to Miley’s trash garbage …music.
6–I agree. She writes all her own songs, too.
Just heard a really good band–The Offspring. Kind of an alternative rockish sound. Good songs of theirs:
You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid
Staring at the Sun
Walla Walla
Just thought I’d through that out there.
Does anyone else use Pandora? I just signed up today, and it’s pretty neat, and rather accurate.
8- no but if you offered an explanation I might try
I love Anna Nalik (Nalick?) Trust me to spell my favorite artists name wrong. She wrote Breathe (2 AM) and that’s what put her on the map but my favorite song by her was “Shine” All of her lyrics are forthright and amazing.
4. I agree with you on alot of those. Jason Mraz
5. Me too. Anything with a melody makes me feel relaxed.
6. Too true. I like her music alot! Especialy “Teardrops on my Guitar” just because it reminds me of my story.
Anybody heard “The Other Promise,” from Kingdom Hearts? It’s AWESOME.
YES! New thread.
7-The Offspring is really biggest modern mainstream band that still has a punk sound. Not the only, but the biggest. Where I come from, at least.
Listening to: That’s Classy, by Breathe Carolina. The guy’s voice is mega-whiny, but [if I could dance,] I’d dance to this. Very bouncy and mindlessly entertaining.
My tastes haven’t changed much since the last thread. My Chemical Romance, Marilyn Manson, AFI, Muse, 3oh!3, Jeffree Star, Atreyu, BrokenCYDE, The Birthday Massacre, Breaking Benjamin, Elvenking, Sonata Arctica, Elis, KoRn, MSI, The Used, the Killers, Linkin Park, Panic! At the Disco, Rob Zombie…
That about covers my favorites.
7-the offspring is good i just got like three cds of theirs from devin
.8 – I don’t like Pandora because it won’t let you skip songs too often and a lot of the stuff they play seems unrelated to the artist I requested in the first place.
Last.fm is loads better, and actually recommends stuff that I’ve ended up really liking.
.14 i loooove last.fm
I should make a new account, hummm
yeah my musical tastes are pretty well known/ not changed so this thread is destined to by lurked in by me
I don’t think I’ve ever listed my favorites:
Idina Menzel- If you watched the Macy’s Day parade she was in it
Dixie Chicks
Disney Movie music- don’t ask.
Jordan Sparks
Carrie Underwood
Taylor Swift
A lot of really random things too.
16- She didnt sing, but Indina Menzel was in Enchanted.
17 – that disappointed me. It seems like the actress with what is probably the best voice was the only one they didn’t have sing.
My own tastes:
Classical (Shostakovitch, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Franck, Bartok, Ravel, Debussy, Villa-Lobos)
Rock / Punk / Metal (Beatles, TMBG, Modest Mouse, Flogging Molly, Pixies, Helloween, Funkadelic, Grateful Dead, Kyo, MIKA, Pink Floyd, Weird Al, Nachtmystium, Lifelover, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Sam Cooke)
Other (Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Marley, David Grisman, Klezmatics, Alicia Svigals, Leadbelly, Limelighters, Sun City Girls)
Come on, then… once more!
Walnuts
Peanuts
Pineapple smells
Grapes, melons, oranges
and coconut shells!
17- Wait wait wait. Who was she? I got a five second overveiw of that movie from my little sister. I could probably ask for more infromation if she hasn’t already mentioned the character.
So, the poeple who listen to Idina what is your favorite song of hers? Mine is Gorgous.
19- That reads (becuase I have no idea the tune) just like a song I made up for my friend. We had to memorize a whole bunch of fruit names so I created a really annoying chant for it:
Apples
Apricots
Avacado!
Be-Ries! Be-Reis!
Strawberry
Blueberry
Blackberry
PEAR!
Strawberry
Blueberry
Blackberry
Pear!
Don’t forget tomatoe!!!!
I won’t continue to save your sanity.
If anyone is interested in expanding their musical horizons and listening to some truly awesome stuff, I had a post on the last thread with suggestions for metal bands. I may repost it. It’s good to just give it all a try, discovering new music is a unique pleasure, and many of you would like metal a lot more than you think. It’s not what you expect it to be.
So I listen to music that no one else in my school have even heard of…basically indie rock and alternative and folk stuff
My favorite artists are…
Belle and Sebastion
The Weepies
Lily Allen
Mika
The Postal Service
Jack Johnson
Kate Nash
Regina Specktor
MGMT
The Hush Sound
and many others similar to the above listed…
So if anyone out there listens to this kind of music too could you please kindly recommend other amazing artists because i’m running out of new songs…Thanks!
22- Indie you say? I got into indie because the guy I like is into it ad found it to be tasteful. There’s a reeeeeally 90’s one called Moxy Fruvous. I like bright eyes. Jack’s Mannequin and Cute is what we aim for are alternative bands( <3 ) . [insert crush’s name here] also reccomended “vampire weeked” and “wilco”
22- I like Belle and Sebastian. Sometimes. We had one album on tape and it was GREAT and then we got one from the library and it wasn’t very good at all, which was v. distressing. Now I don’t have any.
I’ve had Beatles songs stuck in my head ALL DAY. And yesterday! Ugh.
The last ten songs I listened to
1. Shqiptari, Nos Thuj Mbarova! by Esat Ruka
2. Nalfas Qame by the Kfar Kama Circassian Band
3. They Reminisce Over You by CL Smooth and Pete Rock
4. Vallja e Rugoves by the Pristina Folk Ensemble
5. LISTEN!!!!!!! by Talib Kweli
6. Cilveli Oy by Bayar Sahin
7. Song of the Albanian Uprising by Dervish Shaqja
8. Til We Get There by Dead Prez
9. Daglar Kizi Reyhan by Ercument Kilic
10.Crossroads by Bone-Thugs n’ Harmony
Hmmm, any other classical freaks like me? I love to just turn the radio on to the classical station and read. Sometimes, something really cool that I’ve played in orchestra comes on, and I rock out.
17: Yeah, as Nancy.
My grandma wants me to create a CD with only Bein’ Green and Rainbow Connection on it. She loves frogs, Kermit in particular.
Observation: most people here like Classical music and the Beatles.
So we’ve noticed that nearly everyone here likes the Beatles. But does anyone like the various members’ music after they broke up? Right now I have “What Is Life” by George running through my head.
okay. I like Alanis Morrisette…does anybody else like her? and musicals. love ’em. love Queen Latifah in Chicago. love Little Shop of Horrors. love In The Heights. IN THE HEIGHTS! yahoo!
29- I have a lot of Paul’s stuff, and some Lennon, though we have a whole cd around here somewhere. I haven’t heard anything by George…
Going to repost the metal info thing in a moment, hope some of you will try some of it. I went from loving The Beatles, Classical, and Alternative music (Coldplay, Muse) to head over heels worship with various subgeneres of metal. I still like the old music I listened to, which I’ve noticed a lot of you do, so please try out some of it.
LOVE My Chemical Romance, particularly the Black Parade CD. I also love soundtracks…I think my faves are the Pirates of the Caribbean ones, National Treasure, and Batman Begins. But yeah…I like pretty much everything except for country.
Classical music is…ok. I like the really unusual contemporary stuff, like Ginastera and Katchaturian (did I spell that right?), especially if I’ve played it before.
And of course, I love the Beatles. Particularly Abbey Road and the White Album.
29- I like Lennon and Yoko’s Christmas song: Happy Xmas (War is Over). I’ve been to a McCartney concert; I don’t remember much of it.
32- I like 20th century classical. Plus some Beethoven because he was a GENIUS.
28- I’ve only just started liking the Beatles, and they don’t make it anywhere near the top of my list, even if they do get stuck in my head all the time. Classical music is great, though.
29- I’ve never heard any of the separate artists. I can’t even name the individual people.
22- ♥ Mika, he makes me so happy. Regian Spektor, too. Try her first album, it’s really weird, but still awesome. Also, I’m so jealous. That woman is soooo tiny, but she can stretch to at least an 11th on a keyboard, I swear.
23- Saw Jack’s Mannequin live once. Hadn’t heard of them before I went to the concert, but I approve. I mean, I never was a fan of Something Corporate (couldn’t stand that -everyone- was into them when I was in eighth grade), but I liked the show. Maybe I’m a sucker for piano players. Especially if they jump up and down on the keys. It was pretty cool.
26- Yusss! I’m pretty sure anyone classically trained in any instrument is either a classical geek or a classical hater. I be the former, and rightly acknowledge Chopin as my lord and sovereign.
Wintersun is good.
23- Yeah I really like Jack’s Mannequin and I just downloaded some of Vampire Weekend and I really like them too so thanks!
24- I only like some of Belle and Sebastions albums…try The Life Pursuit, Dear Castrastophe Waitress, and I’m Waking up to us. Those are my favorite ones.
35- Have you ever seen the Coldplay piano player? He rocks! haha But yeah Mika always cheers me up and have you ever heard the Musicobx by Regina Specktor? Its really different but I love it!
Mika is cool.
I started liking Madonna recently…
35–Oh yeah, I forgot about Chopin. Definitely my fave classical artist, both to play and to hear.
Has anyone heard the full “Lovers in Japan” song by Coldplay? There’s this extra part to it called Reign of Love that you don’t hear on the radio, and it’s really beautiful, sounds kind of like a hymn.
38-Yep, I’ve heard it. 32- I like My Chemical Romance, too. *begins to sing* Blood, blood, gallons of the stuff…but that’s not their best song, anyway.
6- I agree completely.
Metal!
(expanded from last thread)
(For people interested: read the categories, pick one you think you might like, then the same with bands/songs. You don’t have to listen to every single one, but if you’re interested in expanding your musical horizons, this could start you off.)
Folk: Incorporates various folk-type instruments and themes, such as violins, flutes, ect.
Well, Elvenking is obviously my first recommendation to those who haven’t listened to any. Most of their cds (Heathenreel, Wyrd, TWW, Two Tragedy Poets) have clean mostly vocals (though some singing has a heavy Italian accent), very good melodies and
– Songs: Trow’s Kind, On the Morning Dew, Neverending Nights, Seasonspeach, Moonchariot, The Divided Heart, Dominhate. Show a mix of their different styles.
Eluveitie: Heavier than EK, harsher vocals, but still very good. Has a very different feel, and a lot of their singing is in another language (I do belive it is a largly extinct language actually, that they bothered to learn: Gaulish). Lost of interesting instruments, bagpipes, stringed things thought sound awesome but I cannot identify, pipes, the like. Maybe not as good if you’re just starting out, but hey, it got me interested.
– Songs: Lament (love this one), Adiu(all clean vocals), Of Fire Wind and Wisdom (first folk metal, maybe even metal, song I ever heard!), The Dance of Victory, Slania’s Song
If you like them, also check out Korpiklaani, who are crazy and hyper and fun (and also seem to incorberate beer into a lot of their songs (Happy Little Boozer, Beer Beer!, ect)). The singing is pretty rough, and sometimes in another language, but makes you want to stand up and dance and jump around.
– Songs: Kirki, You Looked Into My Eyes, Happy Little Boozer, Pine Woods (instrumental), Before the Morning Sun
Progressive: It’s… I don’t really know what to say about it. It’s very fast. Usually clean vocals. Very complex, intricate parts in it. Mix between progressive rock and heavy metal, sometimes influenced by classical or jazz. A lot of prog bands have albums songs’ linked together conceptually.
Ayreon are awesome, one of my favourite bands, especially their 01011001 cd, which tells a story, and is kind of opera-esque. Very, very pretty, would recommend to everyone here. No… ‘scary’ parts I suppose.
– Songs: the 01011001 cd, Comatose, New Born Race, E=MC2(squared), Unnatural Selection
Dream Theater: A good band to start with also. Clean singing, a pretty unique style. I like the cd ‘Octavarium’ best.
– Songs: These Walls, I Walk Beside You, The Root of All Evil, Octavarium(warning: 24 min song)
Queensrÿche’s also good I think, haven’t heard much of them, also noteworthy are Skyclad and Tuatha de Danann.
Power: Not quite as technical as prog but still very much so. Lots of fantasy/mythology fun stuffins.
Sonata Arctica: Are great! Fantasy, songs are addicting and good for people just starting out. Clean vocals.
– Songs: In Black and White, Tallulah, The Wind Beneath my Wings(cover I think, but awesome), Fly with the Black Swan
Helloween are awesome awesome awesome, Almost all clean vocals.
– Songs: Mr. Torture, Power, I Want Out, Eagle Fly Free, Forever and One, Hell Was Made in Heaven
Nightwish: Symphonic power metal, aka lots of orchestra aesomeness. They had two singers, Tarja and Annette, I didn’t really like Tarja’s voice but others do so it’s a matter of opinion, I suppose. Veryvery good for people just getting interested.
– Songs: For the Heart I Once Had, Bye Bye Beautiful, Wish I Had an Angel, Last of the Wilds(amazing instrumental, kind of folky).
Kamelot: a lot of symphonic and prog elements as well. All clean vocals, their cd Epica is like a storybook or musical. Very good, kind of opratic in parts.
– Songs: Center of the Universe, Wander, Descent of the Archangel, Wings of Despair
Thrash: Perhaps not the best place to start out listening to metal, but it has some well known bands in it who are worth mentioning. Very fast, very agressive playing, a lot of fun riffs and solos as well.
Metallica: Oh who has not heard of them. Classic. Great.
– Songs: Enter Sandman, Sad But True, The Unforgiven, Low Man’s Lyric (actually a really mellow, sad song, and I love it), All Nightmare Long, My Apocalypse, One
Megadeth: They have a lot of political/social cpmmentary in their songs, so depending on your views, you may not like them. Personally listening to them makes me pumped up and energetic, sometimes to the point here I just want to find soemthing and beat it up. Great for before a hockey game
– Songs: Hangar 18, Trust, The Scorpian, Peace Sells, Of Mice and Men
Anthrax: They actually kind of combine metal with rap in songs, apparently, though I haven’t heard much of them really. I don’t have any specific songs, but if you’re liking thrash metal, Anthrax and Slayer are the other big two bands (ah yes, looked on YouTube, Anthrax+Flava Flav, Anthrax+Public Enemy, ect it seems…odd)
Death: Er, yeah, probably not great for people wanting to give metal a first listen a try as it can be pretty overwhelming. Fast, technical, agressive, all deep growling vocals(can be hard to understand at first, but now I just love the way they sound).
Amon Amarth- Death metal with viking themes! Their word’s aren’t too hard to make out (I could understand them before I was even into death metal), and they are total warriors. I love the lead singer’s growls, personally. One of my favourite bands.
– Songs: Runes to my Memory, Persuit of Vikings, Cry of the Blackbirds, Under the Northern Star
Nile: Veeeery heavy, wouldn’t recomend to anyone not already into metal, but they are awesome nonetheless and I have to mention them. But I can’t even understand most of their singing a lot of the time.
Heavy: The classic, heavy metal. Led Zepplin, Iron Maiden, ect. Steming from hard rock, most subgeneras I mentioned evolved out of this in some way. I’m not going to go to much into it as I’ve run out of time, but it’s got great stuff as well
41- The only metal song I like is “Darkest Days” by Bloodpit.
Look it up. Awesome
38- Yes I love that one. Hardly ever hear it on the radio though. I’ll have to download it.
29 – Imagine!
Got the best of AC/DC at the library today! Lots of fun.
33- I went to one of his concerts as well, but it was years ago. It still rocked, though. He told us about his experience at one of the other cities on the tour. He was walking around and talking to the audience while the piano was being raised up from under the stage. However, he misjudged the distance to the piano and walked right into the hole and under the stage. Luckily, he escaped unharmed and continued the show.
41- Whoops, looks like a bold typo. HTML Gnome? Or is it too late?
I like Tv on the Radio….
especially “Wolf Like Me” “Province” and “Staring at the Sun”.
Oh, and no one can go wrong with some Public Enemy.
Yay, thank you Jadestone!
36- No, no, The Life Pursuit was the really boring one.
.49 – Mmm, I just got The Life Pursuit. I really like it. It’s mellower than some of the other B&S albums (Dear Catastrophe Waitress in particular) but it has some really nice songs.
36- if you like jack’s mannequin then you might like Standard of Living. Also the lead singer of that band used to have a band called “something Corporate” and their songs are really good too. Of the JM songs “Dark Blue” is my favorite.
22-belle and sebastian is pretty good. if you like them, check out dr. dog. MGMT is also cool
23-moxy fruvous is hilarious and awesome. i dislike bright eyes. vampire weekend is sweet.
32-i’ve decided it’s better for me not to talk about MCR, except to say that i dislike them intensely. the POTC soundtrack is genius, especially the first one. and Abbey Road is one of my fav beatles albums too
41-hear, hear! not too fond of thrash, personally, but everything else on there is awesome! i’ve especially been listening to a lot of Korpiklaani lately.
42- Did you even try any of the songs I listed? How do you know that’s the only metal you like?
I couldn’t find the song you mentioned on Youtube. I found Bloodpit, and songs called ‘Darkest Days’ by other bands, but not by them.
48- Go forth and listen to good musics
52- Haha, yes. I like Metallica/Megadeth more than other thrash bands, but I haven’t head a whole lot of the genera. Korpiklaani is love.
Amendment to 41: Where I mentioned Skyclad and Tuatha de Danann under progressive, I meant to put them under folk.
It seems we have a bunch of metal fans here. I won’t say anything bad… so I guess I won’t say anything at all.
uh anyone like Gavin DeGraw? I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan but I just got on of his songs “medicate the kids” it is… really cool. I love listening to it.
53- Checks… ok. It’s called Platitude, Jade. The album is called Darkest days. And Platitude is definitely on youtube.
I’ve been listening to a little metal, but it’s all a little too harsh for me. Your recommendations are very helpful Jade, thanks.
Eluveitie’s hurdy gurdy is sweet.
I didn’t really like Vampire Weekend, don’t know why. Felt limp.
I recently got some ska (punk?): Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution (B.O.T.A.R.), which I like a lot. I need to get Streetlight Manifesto or Catch-22 next. Anybody else heard any of them?
Apparently, Belle and Sebastian are good and I’m going to look them up.
56-yeah, i’ve heard streetlight manifesto is good but i don’t have any of their stuff. i like catch-22 though never heard of BOTAR
55- Okay, as soon as I get on a comp with speakers I’ll look it up.
56- If you’re looking for a less harsh sound, I’d try Ayreon/Kamelot/Sonata Arctica. Glad the list’s helping
And the electric hurdy gurdy is sweet
I also forgot to mention Van Canto on the list, who are brilliant, and also not harsh (except when they cover someone who is)
They’re an almost a cappella metal group, the only instrument is drums and they have a few people singing guitar/bass parts. I’ll post some songs by them later.
It’s rather sad when one keeps looking up new bands they’ve heard some of and liked and the Wiki article always starts out something like “_______ is a British folk-rock group started in the 1960s and ’70s……” Well, they’re not always British, but often enough they are.
Hmm, I’ll have to go look up Pentangle, I very much enjoyed the records (!!) I heard of them the other day…..thanks Robert, you’ve given me more music to look up and spend all my money on, I owe you one. Actually, I’d rather spend my money on music than other, less important things. Like clothes, meh.
56) apparently streetlight manifesto opened a concert someone’s friend went to and they were amazing, but I can’t say I know much else other than that!
although I sit in total awe of your post, jadestone, I have discovered I am not much of a metal girl. I’ve always wondered about what exactly “progressive” meant in that context, though. Hmm I think I must be more of a hard rock type of person if I’m going to listen to anything “heavy”
Anyone heard of Il Divo hear? (Probably)
Hey, y’all haven’t heard from me in probably years now… But Jade, I was just wondering (that list helped me a lot) if you any sites that can get free music downloads cause I’m sort of broke. (See, I already listen to some EK but I didn’t really know what else was out there but then I listened to some stuff on the listy thingy and I figured out that I like folk, progressive, and power metal. at least, I think so. Not sure about death or thrash though)
41- Yay. But you’re forgetting some classic Nightwish songs! Basically you’ve got Nemo, Wish I Had An Angel, The Siren; Wishmaster, She Is My Sin, Dead Boy’s Poem, Wanderlust; the entirety of Century Child; Over the Hills and Far Away; and my favourite, Sleeping Sun (the old version more so that the 2005 one).
Alestorm rocks, too. Probably progressive/folk/PIRATE.
Hammerfall, power metal.
Iced Earth, something like that.
Rhapsody (of Fire), epic stuff that sounds like an over-the-top D&D campaign.
Adagio, more symphonic.
And I can’t think of anything else.
Maybe Breaking Ben, because they’re from my general area, and I must “represent” and such.
64- I actually only own 3 Nightwish cds, and as I said, I don’t really like Tarja’s voice. Most of the songs I like are from Dark Passion Play. But I did put Wish I Had An Angel on that list, and I do like Sleeping Sun, now that I remember it XD I only have the newer version though.
63- I trade a lot of music with people online, over AIM and such. There are sites like Demonoid, which you have to be invited to and seed a bit (not a lot of effort involved in that, actually, and you get acces to a ton of music). There’s also The Pirate Bay, whcih isn’t as good, but you don’t need to have an account at. Those are both online based ones you don’t have to download anything to your computer for, which is what things like Limewire/Frostwire are (if you’re looking into those, Frostwire is completely open source I believe, though less well known). Mostly I just ask people on AIM if they have an artist, and they usually do, though.
65- have you heard it yet?
65-Wait, is Tarja the new one? I liked the old girl, she was a lot more operatic. The new one is popish.
Listening to: Manniquinn, by Cradle of Filth.
Shwoah, the video is creepy.
. Demonoid is a public tracker. If you don’t seed you won’t get banned, but you are morally obligated to. If you just take and take then other people won’t be able to get stuff, and everyone’ll be sad. Except for the RIAA, but they’re evil, so they don’t matter. What.CD is a good example of a private site where you will be kicked out if your ratio gets too low. (Ratio = ratio up upload to download) You actually do have to download a client to use torrents — you just download the *.torrent file from the tracker (Demonoid, What.CD, etc.) and then open it in the client of your choice. I recommend uTorrent for Windoze and Transmission for Mac (both work on Linux as well), although you’re welcome to find your own.
If you’re interested in Demonoid registrations are open when they can manage it, otherwise you can find someone to give you an invite. What.CD is invite-only for the most part.
On another subject, everyone here should try the bands that Jade and Ebeth recommend. They have awesome taste in music, and there’ll be something in there for everyone. Really. Or maybe not in the list, but in the huge genre that is metal. It’s not all death metal, people. And if you feel adventurous try Gorgoroth — it’s black metal, and not for the light-pop favouring person. But it’s worth listening to — it doesn’t get stuck in your head! Um. If you want black metal that’s much more accessible try Equilibrium. They’re folk-black metal, and are epixxxxx. Mana is a 13-minute instrumental, and is worth every second.
So go and listen to good music, and Jade and Ebeth and I will be happy. I hope you enjoyed your chance to hear from me, it shouldn’t happen again anytime remotely soon.
Hey, Glasseh –
Great tutorial. And great to hear from you. Glad you’re alive and … well?
69-is he ever well?
i second the gorgoroth recommendation though. haven’t listened to them in a while, but it’s good
Oh, maaan, you did. I was just like “Hm, I will list classic tracks by album.” Sorries.
haha, ebeth (70). Well, relatively well.
I’d just like to note that “getting music for free” is stealing. I don’t want to attack anybody: I hate the RIAA too, DRM is terrible and pointless, RIAA is moving backwards, etc.
If you’re going to steal (in protest), say exactly that. Don’t pretend it’s ok.
On a semi-related topic, I’ve been using Jamendo, and it’s very nice, but not big enough yet.
64~ Over the hills and far away? Are we thinking of the same song??
*wonders*
73~ Agreed. I sometimes send songs in emails to friends, and they do the same for me, but not very often and I sometimes end up buying music from the artists my friends introduced me to. If I like someone’s music I want to encourage them to keep going by actually buying the music they make.
66- I listened. It’s not a bad song, but I’m not sure they’re a metal band… they sound more like rock.
72- As well as Death can be Though I had to sell a lot of his organs recently in order to buy tickets to Wacken Open Air
73- Oh I know it is perfectly illegal. But to quote Imp y Celyon (Bud of the Holly), “Music shoulld be free as the air and sky” or something of the sort. I still get stuff from iTunes, and if I really liek the band, I buy the actual cds. But if I only bought my music, I would have nowhere near enough. Alas. I hope to go to concerts of the bands I wish to support someday, but they all seem to be from Europe.
ramble ramble ramble ramble ramble…
73- I think my morals might be faulty. I’m well aware that it’s stealing, but I don’t really care. How odd. I think I will blame it on those stupid anti-music-piracy commercials.
-slips into ominous trailer-voice-
You wouldn’t steal a car.
You wouldn’t steal a purse.
You wouldn’t steal a DVD.
Music piracy is stealing.
***
Rated I: Inappropriate for all ages.
-slips out of voice-
My mother has a great deal of random Celtic music I’d never noticed or heard of on her iTunes. I stole it. (Actually it’s my iTunes too…)
76~ I borrow my parent’s CDs and put them into my iTunes, all the time. but that’s my family using these CDs, I somehow think that’s different than illegally downloading music off the internet.
Like I said, I’ll send songs in emails to my friends if I think they’d enjoy a certain piece, and I have 26 songs from friends who’ve sent me things that they thought I would enjoy or that I should learn. (I just went and counted.) 3 of those have been homemade recordings that the friend who sent them made of himself playing guitar and singing. Another one (different friend) was from a CD that he played on, but it was commercially available.
I do plan on eventually getting CDs from most of the artists that I’ve been introduced to by friends via email.
itunes in DRM free in march, most is now.
Just bought Below the Salt by Steeleye Span, and I’m listening to it right now.
78- Did you see the new prices for songs? No more simple 99 cent ones, no. Now there are three prices.
80~ I heard something about price changes….what’s that all about? The song I got today was still 99 cents (it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be though, so I’m incredibly annoyed at the moment.)
I think the CD I got was $8 and something cents, not particularly alarming, although I miss liner notes for CDs. I’m addicted to liner notes.
hi, I’m back for a few minutes at least! It’s hard to keep up here anymore and I have so little time that I just skip MuseBlog… Glassboro said I should come, blame him.
I haven’t used iTunes in six months because WINE hates it, so I can’t help there. Data *should* be free and all but until the artists realize that I guess it’s best to follow their rules. Unless they annoy me. I downloaded Metallica out of spite, I think, even though I don’t much like them and wouldn’t have bought a CD.
This is except for when I really want something.
According to facebook the bands I am currently willing to admit I like are:
They Might Be Giants, Modest Mouse, Muse, Radiohead, Tom Lehrer, hellogoodbye, The Color Wheels, Jonathan Coulton, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Arctic Monkeys, Sonata Arctica, U2, Nine Inch Nails, Dream Theater, Weezer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Elvenking, Nirvana, Apocalyptica, Postal Service, Kaiser Chiefs, Placebo, Coldplay(from the earlier albums), soundtracks to musicals I’ve seen (by which I mean Rent, basically, and Wicked)
Of those, I don’t think I’ve seen Kaiser Chiefs or Placebo mentioned in a music thread yet.
Kaiser Chiefs are like Arctic Monkeys more than anything else, except less like dance tunes and more like alt rock. I found them on last.fm.
Placebo was recommended by Potato Chip to me. They are whiny alternative/indie rock (not technically I think but it’s the sound I associate with not whether they have a label) in the worst/best possible way.
on another note, I am joining jazz band finally (only the lower level band, next year once the seniors are gone I can maybe get into Jazz Machine)! so I’m looking forward to playing jazz again because it is so much fun and an excuse to gliss.
81- I don’t know when it’ll go into effect, but the songs will be either 69 cents, 99 cents, or $1.29, depending on how much the label charges. And they’re making all their songs DRM-free.
83- Gah! Stupid alter ego. Now I have to make another one.
Fave Artists:
KT Tunstall, Cascada, Natasha Bedingfield, Sara Bareilles, Jason Mraz, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Plain White T’s
Pathetic, I know. I only have three songs by one of them, only one by four. I can never manage to get more than like 2 songs at a time, plus our internet can’t handle iTunes Store.
The music section in our Borders is woefully disorganized. I realized this after wandering desolately around looking for anything worth listening to (they don’t have a very good selection, either). *sigh*
Eventually I retreated to a quiet corner and read a book that I didn’t end up buying.
What are you listening to right this minute? I’m listening to Cascada’s Bad Boy. The next track is Miracle, which I looooove. I’m listening to the CD Everytime We Touch right now.
87- Honestly by Cartel. But mostly paramore.
87~ A Hazy shade of winter by Simon & Garfunkel. Oops, just changed to The Road to Liskeard by Gaelic Storm. Next 5 tracks are going to be One Morning in May (an 18th century song) by Jim Krause, Sophisticated Beggar by Roy Harper, Adeu Sweet Lovely Nancy by Morrigan, Gary Indiana from The Music Man soundtrack and Whall be King But Cherlie by Silly Wizards.
(In case you couldn’t tell, I’ve got iTunes on shuffle..)
For some reason I think that the GAPAs (Robert and Rebecca, especially) will get a kick out of this list more than the average MBer. (Yes yes, I know there’s no such thing as an average MBers, but you knew what I meant!)
87- I’m not literally “listening” to anything, in the conventional sense, but in the cerebral sense, I’m “listening” to “Good Day Sunshine” on the Beatles’ album Revolver.
Currently listing to:
“Siuil a Run”, by…gosh, I’m not sure. It was on a compilation disk, and iTunes just says “Celtophile.” The Celtophile website doesn’t actually even list this disk. How weird.
It’s changed to “Pastures of Plenty” by Solas now.
Ah ha ha! I just downloaded “Gives you hell” by All American rejects. Thats the best breakup song i’ve heard in awhile.
.89 – I really like One Morning in May, although I can’t say I’ve heard Jim Krause sing it.
.87 – I’m listening to Plasticities by Andrew Bird.
93- -gasp- Someone else who listens to Andrew Bird! I have Music of Hair, all the Bowl of Fire albums (but I don’t listen to The Swimming Hour), and Weather Systems. I also have what must be the majority, if not all, of the Squirrel Nut Zippers albums. But I’ve never heard Plasticities.
.94 – It’s off his newest (?) album, Armchair Apocrypha. Out of the ones you mentioned, I only have Weather Systems, which it pretty good. I like Mysterious Production of Eggs best, though.
anyone here listen to 3OH!3? i was recommended by a friend (the question mark is not part of the band name, the exclamation point is)
grammatical question-would a semicolon have been appropriate there? (the question mark is not part of the band name; the exclamation point is)
i typed it in and then decided i wasn’t sure and changed it to a comma
the esteemed GAPAs should teach us poor mortals how to use semicolons
</grammar>
Yes, a semicolon would have been preferable between “name” and “the.”
Pollyhymnia thinks semicolons should be called supercommas.
In fact, I just explained semicolons versus colons on the Ask the GAPAs thread. Coincidence? Or ESP…
95- How many has he done? I thought he’d only done two solo albums after the Bowl of Fire.
The Mysterious Production of Eggs sounds good. Very Ionesco.
99-no, just a sad side effect of me not having time to read the entire blog any more. that, and perpetual confusion
played me some rock band today. woo woo. drums are great therapy
.100 – I don’t actually know. I heard him live for the first time in October, so I haven’t been listening for that long. He has a lot of albums that I don’t have; I know that much.
102- You heard Andrew Bird live? -jealous-
.103 – He was amazing, probably the best music I’ve ever seen live. If you ever have the chance, you should take it.
He does this really cool stuff with a recording device so that he can play several of the parts at once. A lot of the songs on the albums are JUST HIM playing, but he’s layered it a million times and he can do it perfectly live. Also, during the concert, the two highest strings on his violin broke and he just continued going like nothing was wrong. That man can improvise like nothing else and it still sounded amazing.
Hi! So now I’m obsessed with Tap Tap Revenge, which means I have to save up for an iPod Touch to get it how wonderful!
So far, I’m almost there (what)
Yeah, bye!
105- OOOOOH I’m waiting until the next generation comes out. It’s gonna be awesome *SQUEE!!!* xD
91~ I’ll bet it was Mairin Fahy with Reeltime from the CD “There Was a Lady: the Voice of Celtic Women” Because that’s a Celtophile record. Yes, I have it too.
107- Yes, that was the record. I didn’t know the artist.
108~ I just looked it up in my iTunes, since I figured it was the same.
Hey- I’m searching (as always) for new music, so it would help me a lot if you just post a few of your favorite songs by your favorite bands.
I just went through the thread, searching after the different songs mentioned on Deezer.
While listening to Kill Hannah, which I don’t normally do.
I remember lurking in here earlier and seeing something about metal bands…does anyone listen to Opiate For the Masses? I just discovered them last night. They’re good, imho.
92–Sweet! Did you think it was AAR when you first heard it? I wouldn’t have known if I couldn’t see their name when it was playing.
I really don’t have time to read all this – I got about halfway down after reading two others, the random and Romance and Relationships. Sorry, Museblog, I’m not that dedicated!
Anyway.
http ://screencast. com/t/vkiF8Sy8m8 and
http ://screencast. com/t/sjmlejABJBB This is my library right now. Well, some of it.
Any Boston Fans? The Cat Empire? Kill The Alarm? Mighty Mighty Bosstones?

For our school’s spring concert, I have been recruited to play the solo cello part in a beautiful, beautiful song called O Music. It’s really a lovely song, and both orchestra and choir can really appreciate it. Here’s the video, it’s so pretty:
[Sorry, Aggie. We’re link-averse. –Admin.]
Just got back from this music festival. I was about to launch into a story about the festival when I realized that I hadn’t been blogging during “The Orchestra Incident”
See I was taking Latin, French, Honors global, and Orchestra. Latin was fifth period. global was first or fifth so I had to take it 1st. Orchestra was 1st period also, if you were sucky like me and didn’t make it into Symphonic. (Symphonic = amazing, Concert = no effort required) Which means that I (sucky little viola that I am) was placed into the Symphonic Orchestra. We’re talking 4 freshman here. Scared the beejesus out of me at first but I worked my pants off (I”m into metaphors now) to prove I deserved to be there.
Anyway all Symphonic kids have to perform a solo in front of a judge at this festival. Not fun.
But I got a 93 on a level four!!!! So happy!!! Especially considering when I came in September I was a level three at best, most likely 2.
*rejoices*
When I can, I’m going to form a band that sings weird, random songs. I have no idea what I’ll call it.
Did you know that the clarinet section in my band is the only one that everyone has to play both octaves? No other instrument has too. Strange.
115- Ohh get someone to write your lyrics in Latin. I’ve always wanted to do that…
115- Don’t clarinets have the largest musical range? I think.
I play 2 octives for all my scales on flute, and 3 on C scale, snd it’s required for us though.
115- …I have done that. We have done that, penguini and Potato Chip and others and I. It’s harder than it looks?
Also, everyone in our band has to play at least a two octave chromatic scale. I can play three octaves of a B flat scale (trombone! if there’s anyone left who doesn’t know that), with an F attachment, if you don’t care about tone quality for the last half.
We all have to know all twelve major scales, too. This is the boring and easy band.
In other news I got into the jazz 2 band. Which was expected. The director was *really* impressed by my interpretation of the audition piece, because I played it the way it was supposed to go. The sightreading sucked, but it always does with me. I’m on the third part (of four) but mostly because the people in it last year or who tried out for jazz machine automatically got higher places this year I think. They’re juniors and seniors…
It’s fun playing jazz again.
117~ I find it hard to believe that clarinets have the largest range, but I don’t really know that much about them. There’s a lot of different kinds though, so that might be what you’re thinking of.
As far as range of an instrument, if you ever think the string bass is for low plunking noises just listen to anything by Edgar Meyer. He. is. amazing. I especially like some of the work he did with Yo-yo Ma and Mark O’Connor, but Short Trip Home is one of my favorite CDs ever.
Today I went to the instrument repair shop. At first I was going to ask if the fiddle I have was worth repairing (and if I even could repair it), but my mother told me that we weren’t going to bother (it’s not a very good fiddle anyway, and it’s falling apart in more ways than one, I think) and that I could have my uncle rent a better one (my uncle has Connections and can rent good instruments for remarkably low prices), but by then I just wanted to go anyway, so I went and looked at fiddles and the assortment of other instruments. It’s a lovely shop, very small and very crowded, with instruments hanging up on all the walls and in the windows, and the whole place has sort of a brownish glow from all that wood. I determined that I would play a full sized fiddle by now (a far cry from the little 3/8 (or maybe 5/8) that I played when I was small!), and then I asked the owner if I could see the dulcimer and he even played it for me. It was lovely; I do like dulcimer music and I’d never seen one.
Listening to Celtic music has been a great source of inspiration, and I’m utterly thrilled to take lessons (I have my fingers crossed that the school will let me jump in at the semester). I know they won’t teach me the style I want to learn, but once I can read music and make the right sounds, I figure I can branch out. Maybe my uncle’ll help me with Celtic stuff.
120~ Your description of the music shop is wonderful, I love places like that. They always seem so magical!
What kind of a dulcimer did you get to see? There are two kinds. One is the hammered dulcimer that is played by hitting the strings with little wooden “hammers” and is played on a stand. The other is called the lap or mountain dulcimer that is played by strumming or picking the strings and is held on the lap or occasionally set on a table. I have one of those, but it’s been terribly neglected because I usually play the fiddle and concertina now.
121- It was the mountain dulcimer.
Listening to: Untouched by the Veronicas.
What’s gotten into you, Beavo? What’s with all this crappy pop music?
I dunno. It’s suddenly appealing. Britney Spears has soared in my iTunes most listened to songs lately.
Is frostwire a good downloading source? According to peeps, it’s good but almost everything has a virus, which is kind of an oxymoron.
123-frostwire is much better than limewire, but not the best way to find music. it’s excellent for downloading individual songs, but torrents are much better for finding complete albums or discographies. Check out post 68 for some good sites to use. If you don’t want people (ie parents?) to notice that you’re downloading music, opera is also a good program to use. it doubles as a bittorrent client and an internet browser
124-Thanks. I was getting tired of actually paying 99 cents for everything.
SFDP.
I’m planning on getting my laptop before I dowload anything, because now the computor I use is shared by my whole family. Getting a virus on this computor would insure my solitary confinement to my room for the rest of forever. Plus, no laptop.
Okay, so Opera is good for not letting the rents know, but is it a good way to find music? Limewire is such a freaking tracker, so no. Bootleg versions suck. Frostwire is apparently good, but everything’s corrupted. And uTorrent seems the best alternative. Any other suggestions?
I find the best way to get music is to index search it.
It works for my tastes, because nearly everything is on the internet these days and I only look for single songs anyway.
www . google. com/search?hl=en&q=intitle%3A%27index.of%27+%28mp3%29+%22the+song+you+want+here%22&btnG=Google+Search&aq=o&oq=
You do have to sort through a lot of undesirable stuff. A couple of tips:
1. Ironically, anything with mp3 in the immediate URL (as in google.com is immediate, google.com/maps has an extension to the immediate google.com part) is usually pretty bad. Don’t go for those, unless you want to see for yourself.
2. Conversely, anything really obscure is good. Have you ever heard of ipsofiles? Apparently they have a good jazz section! Who knew? You do, now.
3. Just use common sense. And also, I would recommend this on a computer not virus-susceptible.
Other than that… Good luck, and have fun pirating.

Mood: Stressed
Listening To: “Love Lockdown” by Kanye West
123- You can also use a Youtube to MP3 or iPod convertor; it pulls not only songs/soundtracks directly from the video you’re watching, it can also pull the entire video with graphics to your iPod.
Why this sudden obsession with ‘808s and Heartbreak’? Could it be that I’m FREAKING OUT ABOUT BIOLOGY???
128-Thank God, Kanye actually put out a good album. Heartless is addictive.
129- The only one I’m willing to buy on iTunes, I’ll give it that much. Cannot…stop…listening…
124- I actually use a site called mp3raid.com … they have tons of music.
Who here plays an instrument?
Piano pwns!
131- Just one? Pish. I play piano and pipe organ seriously, own a ukulele, an electric guitar, and several recorders and tin whistles, and occasionally play harpsichord and clavichord. I would also like to take up the bagpipes, but simply cannot find the time to do so.
132- Okay, I shoulda said “instrumentS”. I play the piano and the harp.
Ahh, bagpipes! What kind? Highland bagpipes?
My dad plays them xD They’re very… loud.
131- I play the cello as my most serious instrument, I’d rate myself to be pretty advanced. I also play guitar(bass), piano, string bass, and also a little harp, though not very well.
134- Very cool! Not many people who I randomly talk to online play the harp. Now I feel like I play so few instruments compared to everyone else.. I’m quite serious about both of them though, so I guess that counts for something… I practice both a lot. If I added any other instruments I probably wouldn’t be able to practice them very much.
105- Hey, me too! I’m at 150$ right now, but my mom’s getting me a job cleaning at a local resturaunt…
I used to play violin and flute, but making music isn’t really my thing.
Listening to: Amaranth, Nightwish.
137- I love Nightwish! I have ‘Angels Fall First’ (album and song). One of my favorites to listen to.
And WHY am I still listening to Kanye West?
131- i played Clairentet and my best friend wants me to start again, but I have simply no time. i also played violin but everyone knows the orchestra teacher lied to me when he reccomended I continue. i also play harmonica piano guitar (if only knowing the A chord counts) and *cough cough* my friends think this isn’t an instrement *cough* voice.
133- I’m not quite sure which kind, but that sounds about right. I know someone who plays them, and he let me try them once. I was able to keep the drone going.
.I can play the mandolin, but not terribly well. It’s a really fun instrument, I think. I also play guitar on and off. Meh.
141- I have this really old amndolin that was my gradmas and its really awsome…i wish i could play it.
So right now i am listening to MGMT- Electric feel. i love it!
141- I can play the tin whistle, the recorder, the cifteli (a two stringed Albanian instrument), and the dumbek (a middle eastern drum). I play everywhere from Irish music to Balkan music.
.143 – I’ve played a dumbek before, at a drum circle somewhere. It was a really nice one, if I recall correctly, but it wasn’t very loud next to the djembes and doundounbas.
Cool instruments, everyone.
105- I played “Tap Tap Revenge” on my cousin’s iPod touch over Christmas, and I got really addicted to it as well. I kept doing “Hot N Cold”… it was so fun…
My family is extremely dissapointed in me for not being interested in playing a musical instrument, and even though I quit violin like five years ago, they still harp about it frequently. Like, yesterday. Can’t they think of something else to harp about like… I don’t know, Algebra sucking or something?
(answer: no, never.)
Sorry, off topic.
We got to listen to iPods in math, which was great, because we got to listen to stuff that made us giggle because we’d never be able to say whatever was coming through the earbuds in front of a teacher. Yay for BrokenCYDE!
138-I think there’s subliminal messaging somewhere in 80’S and Heartbreak that says “listen to Kanye West listen to Kanye West forever and forever never stop listening”.
138-search me. One type of music I HATE is classical. It is pure torture. But I often play classical on cello. Go figure.
The last 5 songs I listened to: (in order, 1 is the most recent)
1) eBay, by Weird Al Yankovic
2) So What, by Pink. No idea why.
3) Love Her, by the Beatles.
4) I Want a New Duck, by Weird Al Yankovic

Ah! I’m on MY Mac now. Oh, you got to hear this.
As I walk through the valley where I harvest my grain
I take a look at my wife and realize she’s very plain
But that’s just perfect for an Amish like me
You know, I shun fancy things like electricity
At 4:30 in the morning I’m milkin’ cows
Jebediah feeds the chickens and Jacob plows… fool
And I’ve been milkin’ and plowin’ so long that
Even Ezekiel thinks that my mind is gone
I’m a man of the land, I’m into discipline
Got a Bible in my hand and a beard on my chin
But if I finish all of my chores and you finish thine
Then tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1699
We been spending most our lives
Living in an Amish paradise
I’ve churned butter once or twice
Living in an Amish paradise
It’s hard work and sacrifice
Living in an Amish paradise
We sell quilts at discount price
Living in an Amish paradise
A local boy kicked me in the butt last week
I just smiled at him and turned the other cheek
I really don’t care, in fact I wish him well
‘Cause I’ll be laughing my head off when he’s burning in hell
But I ain’t never punched a tourist even if he deserved it
An Amish with a ‘tude? You know that’s unheard of
I never wear buttons but I got a cool hat
And my homies agree, I really look good in black…fool
If you come to visit, you’ll be bored to tears
We haven’t even paid the phone bill in 300 years
But we ain’t really quaint, so please don’t point and stare
We’re just technologically impaired
There’s no phone, no lights, no motorcar
Not a single luxury
Like Robinson Caruso
It’s as primitive as can be
We been spending most our lives
Living in an Amish paradise
We’re just plain and simple guys
Living in an Amish paradise
There’s no time for sin and vice
Living in an Amish paradise
We don’t fight, we all play nice
Living in an Amish paradise
Hitchin’ up the buggy, churnin’ lots of butter
Raised a barn on Monday, soon I’ll raise anoder
Think you’re really righteous? Think you’re pure in heart?
Well, I know I’m a million times as humble as thou art
I’m the pious guy the little Amlettes wanna be like
On my knees day and night scorin’ points for the afterlife
So don’t be vain and don’t be whiny
Or else, my brother, I might have to get medieval on your heinie
We been spending most our lives
Living in an Amish paradise
We’re all crazy Mennonites
Living in an Amish paradise
There’s no cops or traffic lights
Living in an Amish paradise
But you’d probably think it bites
Living in an Amish paradise
(excuse any spelling errors, this is from e-lyrics.com)
Well, my favorite songs are…I don’t have any.
But I like the Beatles.
And anything before 1990. Unless it’s by:
Jason Mraz
Jack Johnson
Nickleback
Green Day
and some other songs.
122~ Ah. I have one! It’s been disgracefully long since I played it though.
147- Isn’t it ironic how some of the most complex music in the world (classical) is often called the most boring? Sometimes I feel really sick of playing classical music and just play whatever decides to come out of my fingers. It feel soooo good. My mom usually gets really annoyed though so I have to do that when she’s out of the house >.<
People, everyone on here has heard of Weird Al. Can we please move on? Half the blog has posted something like “have you heard of Weird Al” or song lyrics. On this thread. It’s not a lyric thread, there’s already one for that. Yes, we’ve heard of him. Next topic please.
Re: Classical music- I love it, but I listened to only Classical for the first twelve years of my life. I don’t listen to it much anymore. If you hate it, you haven’t listened to much of it.
152–I haven’t. Seriously, I have absolutely no clue who he is. (Not that I really care, just saying…..)
SFDP.
In Gym, we were listening to the FOB version of Beat It, and Vildana thought they said “No one wants to beat a fetus” which inspired including fetuses into every song that came on. Yeah, we’re so mature.
The video of “Don’t Stop” by the Innerpartysystem is amazing. It starts off with these two well-groomed newscasters mouthing the lyircs to the camera, but then it gets weirder and morbid. The woman has clips of her doing this sexual Marilyn Monroe look, and her with bleeding mascara and smudged lipstick, the guy stops smiling and looks really freaky, the lady comes up with a bloody nose as he vomits blood, they smile creepily, they make out for two point five seconds, she shows up with black lipstick, he makes more creepy faces. The little box behind them that shows what’s going on flashes the lyrics and words like “rape” and “murder” and all sorts of other bad stuff that they report on the news, which is like everything now. Gross, but it’s a metaphor for how the media and entertainment business looks so polished when it comes up on TV, but behind the scenes it’s really just disgusting and grotesque how they get their stories, how they put together what you see as perfectly normal. What you DON’T see, you know? I love it.
154-Talk about modern music.
Ok, I am a music obsessive person and I have to post my fave artists of all time.
Coldplay
U2
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
Foo Fighters
Death Cab For Cutie
Radiohead
The Goo Goo Dolls
The White Stripes
The Raconteurs
Smashing Pumpkins
Snow Patrol
Linkin Park
Pretty diverse list of rock, if I do say so myself.
156-Not really diverse, sorry.
My math teacher listens to Death Cab for Cutie, Porcupine Tree, Muse and King’s X, and he’s going to burn me a CD with them.
.156 – Those strike me as very similar, actually.
156- Those are actually really similar…
Listening to: Happy by Natasha Bedingfield.
Last five songs i listened to…
1. Skeleton Song- Kate Nash
2. Womanizer (Cover)- Lily Allen
3. Traffic Light- The Ting Tings
4. Clocks- Coldplay
5. Kiss Kiss- Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Last six songs Pandora played for me on my Alternative station:
I’ll Follow You Into the Dark-Death Cab for Cutie
Driving Away-Svoy
Never Ready to Leave-Sherwood
My Name is Trouble-Nightmare of You
True Love-Angels and Airwaves
Current: Some remix of Mr. Brightside-The Killers
Ha ha, you want diverse? Look through my music collection. Rolling Stones anyone? I can’t imagine anything better to follow up with than Joshua Bell….hmm, maybe a little David Bowie on the side? Gaelic Storm? Simon and Garfunkel? Perhaps a touch of Celtic Fiddle Festival? How about some 18th century songs now? Oh, jazz on the English Concertina, sure! How about some big band? Then some nice choral music, Paul Hillier is grand. Oh, Steeleye Span is good too, how about following that with Jerry Bryant and Starboard mess or the X-Seaman’s Institute? Bright eyes next? Glorious. Maybe some from the Oyster Band, then Alan Mills or maybe Black 49, Spike Jones? What about Edgar Meyer, you know, the bassist? Cherish the Ladies, or perhaps 4 Men and a Dog, they’re Irish too. Oh, some Bob Dylan, maybe a spot of Alan Mills, a touch of City of Washington Pipe Band (love the bagpipes!), maybe a few minutes of Kate Rusby…..where did we start again?!
And that’s just scratching the surface. Tell me that’s not diverse, I dare you.
Diversity:
The list of 156 is diverse, it’s just a “list of [solely] rock.” Lay off, everybody.
I’m actually kinda annoyed when people start telling me how diverse their tastes are. Either:
1. The music they list is diverse, but that doesn’t mean anything.
2. The music they list isn’t diverse, and they look stupid.
I don’t really care how diverse your music is, I’m interested in its qualities. Perhaps this is too harsh, as most people seem to be limited to a very small pool of music, but diversity for the sake of diversity isn’t really anything.
Sorry. I’m grouchy.
163- I agree. The whole idea of diversity is really overused.
163-I don’t really care how diverse your tastes are, I’m just interested in tastes themselves. I get mad when somebody’s too closed minded to explore other genre’s, but I get just as mad at people who listen to EVERYTHING just to look diverse.
154 (beavo) If you want music videos that take a swipe at something, search Empty walls by Serj Tankian
Guys, calm down. Diverse list of *rock*. Key word. Not trying to brag about my “diversity” or whatever. Just a closing comment. It doesn’t really matter.
167-Nononono, I wasn’t attacking you. I was just saying that the list of rock wasn’t a diverse list of rock, most of the listed bands have the same sound. MuseBloggers only brag about cool things like how much of pie they can count.
Oh my God worst pun ever *self stab*
Puns are the DREDGE of humor. This is why I have no friends.
Psh, anyway, did I mention (I did) how EXCITED I am about this year’s Warped Tour? It’s all “scene” stuff (yuck) but most scene music sucks. This music sucks too, but it’s catchy, unlike OhMyGodDinosaurReferenceHereExclamationPoint! scene bands.
I’m not bragging. I think my list of music is amusing, listening to my iPod on shuffle is a real trip. I don’t really care if someone listens to nothing to nothing but the same band, although I think that can get boring.
I wasn’t necessarily trying to prove a point or impress anyone, it’s just funny; like I said, on shuffle it makes for an interesting experience.
168- So you don’t like hellogoodbye? (Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! being their first LP)
also about warped tour(just looked up the list of bands): if I recall correctly Streetlight Manifesto were ska?
Is the current trend of clever names reflected in the lyrics? I haven’t heard any of them, although I’ve heard of them. If so, I need some of this…
165- Where do you find jazz on the English concertina?
169-I thought your list was funny!
170-Hellogoodbye came out before the whole “scene” crap exploded. They’re actually kind of a Scene band, a real one. Not a jump-on-the-bandwagon-and-make-bad-music-with-Apple-software-on-MySpace band.
Warped Tour: I see it steadily going south, even though I like a lot of the new bands. It used to be good Alternative, then pop-ish Alternative, then all out Bubblegum Alternative, and now it’s all faux Techno plus guitar and breathy singer. I feel kind of bad for liking degenerate bands like BrokenCYDE and Breathe Carolina, but it’s CATCHY.
…now I really want there to be a CD called OhMyGodDinosaurReferenceHereExclamationPoint! and have it be, like, power metal or something.
172-Power metal, it’s okay. If it thinks it’s Techno, I’m going to hunt down the artist and shoot them with my finger of doom.
Would that be the middle finger?
174-Haven’t you ever shot a finger gun? Index and middle together, thumb up, pulling the trigger.
Pandora is being really really reallly nice today. iTunes isn’t. It dosn’t have the album artwork for Over the Hills and Far Away. What is UP with their Nightwish ignorance?
Speaking of Nightwish, they’re coming to DC, and I can’t go.
Back in 6th grade, I remember writing a letter to Muse asking for an article on making instruments. At the time, I had an assignment to make an instrument for science class; now, I have to make an extremely accurate one for a SciOly event. Any advice, anyone?
176 – Drums! Or a panpipe!
176- Search “Dennis Havlena” on google and there will be a link to a man who has instructions to make instruments out of everyday household things. The instruments actually sound good too.
Current obsession: Pandora just played the song Jillian (I’d Give My Heart) by Within Temptation. I just got it, and I’ve played it, like, five time since. I might actually get into this band!
176- Your area has Sounds of Music as an event?! You’re so lucky! Mine did last year but now they don’t. This year I was going to pwn it with a PVC pipe trombone. (my events right now are technical problem solving and junkyard challenge and we have regionals in a week)
If you don’t want to do all the work with sizing things and maybe think about what will resonate best, or can’t play brass, a friend of mine was going to make bagpipes. It can be done, google it.
If you want it to be easy, just use a series of water glasses with a tuner. For extra portability, I saw a group last year fill glass bottles different amounts and fit them on a wooden rack.
Also, I hear you get bonus points for things like naming your instrument and enthusiasm and maybe food-coloring the water interestingly.
170~ “English International” is a CD set that features English Concertina players from around the word, playing many styles of music on the instrument. It has a pretty good mix, although a little tipped towards the classical and traditional music. There are the odd tracks of something completely different. Perhaps not strictly jazz, but similar.
171~ how much did you recognize?!
Gaelic Storm is coming to my area!
Currently listening to: The King’s Shilling, sung by Karan Casey. It has bagpipes.
My dad has a bagpipe ringtone! -is envious-
181- I still haven’t listened to Gaelic Storm.
So, I DESPERATELY want to see Paramore sometime soon. As soon as they announce touring details, I am all over it.
i play the awesomest instrument ever! I am the proud owner of a… PENNYWHISTLE!!! Oh yeah! i rock so much
My gosh, I have never heard of any of the bands(they are bands right?) you guys are talking about. Church music is taking away what little coolness I have. HELP!!!
184- pennywhistles are sick. you do rock so much
183- Do you just love them because they were on the Twilight CD? I hate when people say that ‘ooh, we love Paramore’ when they’ve only heard one song. Not that I would expect anything like that of you, because you’re awesome. I just have a problem with people saying that they love Paramore when they don’t have all their albums like I do. They can be in love with the song, maybe, but not the band.
(184) I love the sound of a pennywhistle playing in unison with a fiddle in Irish music — the whistle note standing out pure and clear in the middle of the warm, rich violin tones.
186-i just hate when people say “ooh, we love paramore” period.
but hey, whatever works for you i guess.
avantasia is freaking awesome, anyone else a fan? i just got some of them a couple days ago. also more .<
uuuuuugh. GAPAs, could you fix that please? just us the > and < signs instead of > and <
187- I think Cherish the Ladies has a pennywhistle + fiddle combination.
188-Agree. Paramore makes me sick.
It makes me madder when people say “ooh I love Muse” when they’ve only heard SMH on Twilight, because Muse is actually a band I like.
The pennywhistle is a grand instrument. I recently heard an interesting piece of south african jazzish music heavily involving pennywhistles.
192- It’s called kwela, and if you are looking for more of it, check out Paul Simon (sans garfunkel)’s epic album Graceland which IS TOTALEH TEH AWSUM & PWNS ALL U N00BS!!!
I have $15 on iTunes and I don’t know what to get! I haven’t the faintest idea how much my uncle has and I don’t want to buy something I already have access to, because I don’t have that much money. The options are bewildering.
Andrew Bird makes me faintly depressed. I just don’t find his new stuff that good. Mother says he’s sort of made his own style in recent years, which is a good thing. It’s just that I don’t like his new style as much. It’s still good, it’s just…I can’t really define it. It’s more like pop…or rock, maybe, and a little less like swing, but not swing, just a sort of weird, cryptic, surreal, unidentifiable music. When I listened to The Swimming Hour I was so disappointed, but I perked up a bit because Mother said, in response to my complaints about the lack of surrealism, “He got it back later.” And he did, but…it’s like… mainstream surrealism. No…
Oh, I give up. Anyway, if he came here I’d still go see him, but I don’t like his new stuff as much. It’s just different.
186- YIK, NO! It drives me INSANE when people obsess over Paramore just because it was in Twilight. I have loved Paramore since the beginning of 5th grade. I know every word of every song they have recorded. The fact that Hayley wrote songs for Twilight made me very pleased and perhaps even intensified my obsession, but it is NOT just because they were in Twilight.
187-… Never expirienced that, myself, but I’ll take your word for it.
191- Really? And I thought I liked you, Beavo… Just kidding, we all have our tastes in music. Just, try not to insult them too much, or I might have to eat you.
The Piano Knows Something I Don’t by PatD is a good song. I haven’t listened to them that much since last spring, and that song always makes me happy.
The grammys are in 5 days… In Rainbows FTW!
Also Viva La Vida, that was a great album.
And of course the Jonas Brothers suck.
195-*sticks out tounge* At leats you changed your name back to MissSwann, or I’d have to eat you.
Actually, I hate it when anyone obsesses over ANYTHING Twilight, even if it’s a good song like SMBH.
197- *sticks tongue back* Lay off my weird obsessions, please. As I always say, Twilight is an acquired taste. Sure, you can be an obnoxious teenage girl who squees over the sexy vampys, or you can be like me, and appreciate it as a novel. (If that makes sense…)
I played my Muse CD in the car the other day, and when SMBH began, my dad complemented it (a shocking breakthrough for him, appreciating modern music). I told him it was in Twilight, and he looked at me like I had 5 heads. Then he made a snarky comment on how he was amazed at how anything good could be associated with Twilight.
And speaking of my name, I was thinking of changing it. Something like Madame Helena of the Cemetery Drive.
192~ It’s the musical equivalent of caffeine. They’re not my all time favorite, but fun just the same. If you’ve seen the movie Titanic they were the “steerage band”.
187~ Along with the crisp dry clack of bones being played by someone who really knows what they’re doing, too…..especially for hornpipes. Okay, that probably won’t make any sense to someone who’s never heard bones or knows what they are, well, in the musical sense at least.
What I’m referring to is two slim pieces of hard material (often bone or wood, hence the name) that are help in the player’s hand and clacked together. They make a very crisp clacking noise that sounds almost like hard shoes on a dance floor, only quicker, you sometimes heard them in traditional music. Along with spoons, but they generally aren’t as capable of going as fast.
Ah, a correction. I said that the CD set English International had some jazzy tracks on it. I lied. I hadn’t listened to the whole CD all the way through by itself for awhile and I misspoke. It does however have several ragtime pieces, one of my guilty pleasures. Yes, laugh at me, I actually like ragtime. *goes and hides*
(199) I used to play the bones a little, but it’s been a while. I probably couldn’t even hold them today.
I love ragtime, too. Come back ten years from now, and I’ll play you some on the piano.
200~ Aww, you’d keep me in suspense 10 years? How terribly cruel. Argh, now I’ve got an insatiable thirst for ragtime. *groan*
You could probably still play the bones! I was told one time that the best way to learn how to do it was to figure out how to hold them, and then sit down and watch a movie and ignore what your hands are doing, eventually you’ll get it right without thinking! I’ve not tried it though…
Hmm, speaking of penny whistles, I wonder if I still have one floating around? If so I wonder if I could learn how to play the thing before this summer….or if I’d be allowed to take fiddle or concertina on board the Niagara, assuming I get the application filled out and accepted…….because 4 weeks without music would kill me. *shudder*
I’m not deliberately keeping you in suspense — that’s how long it will take me to learn to play it. Don’t forget, I started piano lessons just before the first Kokonvention. Right now I’m about where I should have been in third grade.
Have you ever heard any recordings by Eytan/Ethan Uslan? Now, there’s a ragtime pianist!
202~ Ah c’mon, you’re doing quite well. I remember being duly impressed by your playing at the first Kokonvention, and if you’d only been playing for a little bit that’s even more amazing. Of course, I simply cannot fathom the piano. I can play When the Siants go Marching In, Clementine and Down in the Valley very badly, and such is the extent of my repertoire. O.o
No I haven’t heard of Ethan Uslan, but I’ll look him up….I must admit that I don’t really have any specific ragtime CDs, just the occasional track. Like Stone’s Rag on Traditions by Maggie Sansone (a hammered dulcimer player).
I enjoy hammered-dulcimer music and borrowed one for a few months when I was in graduate school. Playing it made me realize the limitations of the instrument: it was like taking the keyboard off a piano and playing the strings with tongue depressors. It was also hard to tune and had to be retuned a lot. I soon realized why people invented harpsichords and pianos. Anyone who can play ragtime on a hammered dulcimer has my respect.
204~ Yes, yes of course, but they do have a glorious sound, you must admit. I deeply respect the people that take their dulcimers camping with them, especially to the market fair, because it ALWAYS rains three days straight.
One time I was playing music under a tent fly in the rain with about five other fiddlers and after every tune we had to tighten our bow hair again because the humidity was wreaking havoc. Of course, we kept tuning and retuning as well. Probably not the greatest idea, but lots of fun just the same.
I saw Coraline yesterday (awesome, I love Tim Burton) and now I’m obsessed with the soundtrack.
The Other Father Song is by They Might Be Giants, just to let you know.
198-At least you don’t have a T-Shirt that says something like “real vampires sparkle” or “Edward preffers brunettes”. I saw the latter and I was like “Who are you kidding? Edward preffers men, and no gay guy I know would go out with him“. Naturally, I was immidiatly dismembered and eaten by four hundred thirteen year old girls.
And I like your name the way it is, although Madame Helena of Cemetery Drive sounds cool. A bit My Chem obsessed, though? Wow, I’m one to talk, I’m wearing a My Chem shirt under a My Chem hoodie.
Cassandra Syndrome debut album today! I’m going.
195-it drives me insane when people obsess over paramore. also muse is too good to be in twilight imho but i guess they can’t help that stephanie meyer appreciates good music. she actually does listen to some good stuff, i was a bit surprised
Last night I was talking to my friend via texts and she was listening to My Chemical Romance….I didn’t know she liked them. Then again, she didn’t know I’d ever heard of them. Then we were talking about TMBG….Now I’m looking them up on iTunes. (Like I could buy anything, hah, I have 16 cents.) Hoping for a 30 second sample, but I’m not sure my hand cranked connection can handle it. Oh well. The professor who’s teaching the astronomy course I’m taking (on DVD from the Teaching Company) said something about one of their songs and it sounded amusing.
Oh, Twilight. Yuck. I need to get the last book back to my friend, I refused to buy them. Unfortunately several of my best friends have fallen for them….eeeewwwwwwwwwww. Bella is such a whiner, I can’t stand her. She goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on about how perfect Edward is and then complains about him being too good for her and how he’s so perfect…….[repeat ad nausium and beyond]. But this is the music thread, not the lets-discuss-stupid-books-that-don’t-even-deserve-to-be-read thread. And so I shut my overly large mouth.
Geez, I killed a thread. Umm, how am I going to fix it? Hmm…*thinks*
I went to a concert the other day?
Ooh! We’re getting high speed internet, so I’ll actually be able to download stuff from iTunes! How amazing is that? I’ll actually be able to watch YouTube videos without waiting for 3 hours for a 5 minute clip! *happiness* That’ll be nice. 2 weeks. I can’t wait.
Currently listening to:
Solas, Grey Selchie
Yay selkies!
Oops, now it’s changed to “Song of Choice.”
I had an earworm of “I love you, always forever” for 3 1/2 days. Now that it’s gone, I kinda miss it.
180 – I forgot to check this thread for almost two weeks! I actually thought of the glasses of water, but decided on a banjo instead. It’s working decently.
Yay! what other song are you preparing? what’s the bass instrument going to be?
I have nothing to say about music, really. Only that I miss marching band and it starts in three months and I’ll be an upperclassman then and it’s scary…
Also I still can’t play my NYSSMA solo and it needs to be perfect in April.
i got a I at contest class B trumpet solo. and then the quintet got a III (it sucked so much >.<) and jared didn’t even freaking show up for the trumpet trio so we had to go comments only. i would say more about that but it would involve some very inappropriate language and talk of rather graphic violence so i won’t.
206- OMG Coraline was AMAZING… I wore the 3D glasses I got to school the next day and people were telling me how much they like my sunglasses… the fools… and we love you for your MCR obsession, Beev. Unfortunately my mom won’t let me wear my MCR tee… too ’emo looking’, apparently…
215-Psh, tell her there hasn’t been an emo looking band since 1990.
Listening to: 100% by Angelspit. Probably one of the most mindless, degrading songs I’ve ever heard, and I love it.
Dad had Beck playing earlier. Now I have “Beautiful Way” stuck in my head…..AAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! It’s so hard to get out of one’s head when it gets stuck there.
214- Woo! We don’t have solo&ensemble until March, thankfully.
I am going to play Sonata VII by George Handle. It’s a pretty fun piece, though I feel like it’s a bit below my level. I haven’t practiced hardly at all lately… I should do that… >.<
Our band director asked a few of us to play for his music appreciation class on wednesday, so they can hear the different instruments play. I’ll probably play this solo or my one from freshman year (Danse de las Merlitons/Dance of the Reed-flutes, form the Nutcracker and also the flowers/waterfall in Disney’s Fantasia :D), as the one I played last year, though was a very good piece, I don’t think I remember enough of the technicallities to pull it off to my standards with no practice (Polonaise and Badinerie).
In other news, I found a free download of some electronica+metal thing. It is kind of interesting. It’s free, and you can find it if you type “U.S.C.H.” into our favorite search engine and look down four places (should be RAHARECORDS I believe).
Today I’m going to see All-District chorus, which should be good.
I’m still listening to 100%. “God made me a cannibal to fix problems like you”.
“Relax, God is in control
Watch the dot
Take your meds
Obey my demands
Trust my dog
Time for surgery (or shut your eyes)
You’re dead”
SFTDP
218-I’m listening to them right now, they’re not bad!
215- She didn’t buy it, but thanks anyway.
ARG! There was a Paramore sweatshirt on sale at Hot Topic.com and it was the RIOT! sweatshirt (not many people have those) and it was 10.00$!!!!!! BUT NOW THEY’RE SOLD OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
221-How could she not buy it? It’s TRUE! And aww, I hate when there’s something beast on Hot Topic that nobody has and then it goes and sells out. How can nobody have it and it sells out? IDK, but it never fails…
Meh, Dysfunctional Doll is better though. Go look ’em up.
ANYWAY (this isn’t a shopping thread), I read both Tarja and Nightwish’s open letters, which made me really sad. It’s horrible how a great band with so much going for them and so much talent can fall apart because of little personal issues.
And plus, thank you, Jade. U.N.C.H! is amazing.
Listening to: Good Girl Gone Bad by Rihanna
I feel really bad for her.
Is there anyone besides me who likes electronica-influenced music, Cascada, or any related artists/genres? I seem to be the only one at school.
I hate ticketmaster.
in other news, i’m going to the franz ferdinand concert in may!
223-Check out Breathe Carolina and Electric Valentine, those are two of my favorite electronic bands. Kind of scene, yeah, but catchy.
Hey, everybody.
Currently listening to: Scaring Myself and Self-Centered, both off Drunk Enough to Dance by Bowling For Soup.
Speaking of which, has anyone ever heard of them? Me and my friend really like them, but we get weird looks when we say we do. I think it’s another of those bands where people really like it or don’t care for it at all. I think it might be because nearly none of the songs are serious.
I think Jason Mraz, is okay, but I have listened to “I’m Yours” so many times, I am sick of it.
225- Thanks, I’ll look them up as soon as I get to somewhere with high-speed internet. Can you recommend any songs? My recommendations for Cascada songs would be: Ready For Love, Can’t Stop The Rain, One More Night. I have her earlier CD (Everytime We Touch) and I’ve heard a couple songs on her newer one, Perfect Day. Does anyone have it? Is it any good?
226-Bowling for Soup did 1985; of course I’ve heard of them! Not my style exactly, but I don’t hate ’em.
228-Most of the songs by Breathe Carolina are completely shallow and/or about sex, but if I don’t really listen to the words and just the whole piece, it gives me a really good feeling. If you want meaning, try Innerpartysystem. Electric Valentine’s singer is whiny, but it works for the genre. Lady GaGa is great for popish-electronic, and Hellogoodbye is great for alternativeish-electronic.
Breathe Carolina- The whole album “It’s Classy, Not Classic”
Electric Valentine- The 1st And Last Time (With Breathe Carolina), Electric Ghosts (With Watchout There’s Ghosts), All In Black, A Night With You
Innerpartysystem- Don’t Stop, Die Tonight Live Forever, Heart of Fire, Redemtion
Lady GaGa- The Fame album
Hellogoodbye- EVERYTHING
Ooh! I forgot, look up the Sugarbabes. They’re similar to Cascada. Stupid iCarly girl had to steal their songs… About You Now isn’t teen pop originaly, I promise.
222- It totally sucks, I wanted it so bad… and everything else good was sold out. What really sucks, though, is that this was a 50% off all CLEARANCE sale. That means that everything was so cheap… once in a lifetime for them. And I missed my oppourtunity… And also, speaking of shopping, there’s a great sale on the MCR site, I just ordered an amazing t-shirt for like 7$…
227- Listen to some of his other stuff. It’s similar to John Mayer and Jack Johnson.
229- A friend and I made choreography for 1985 when we were about 8… I swear, I will never forget those moves…
Unnnhhh… I’m so freaking tired! I don’t even know why! It’s early, and I basically slugged out all day… I can barely formulate legit sentences… night, all.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Donovan. I was sort of immersed in it as a child but never sought it out after my mom stopped listening to it as much. A while ago I found some on our computer, and then mother bought some more, and when we went out to the country I found tow records by Donovan and am now completely convinced that we need to fix our record player especially since iTunes only has Barabajagal and then a bunch of compilations of the more popular songs, and I want really obscure stuff.
229, 230- LOL, I guess I’m not as electronica-obsessed as I thought I was… I agree about the “really good feeling” thing, that’s why I listen to electronica. I heard “Everytime We Touch” on the radio once, and I was hooked!
231-Really? Ohmygosh *runs to My Chem site*
Their site used to have so much cool stuff, and now it sucks.
233-I’m not obsessed, but those bands are pretty electronic-influenced.
La de da, singing in a choir again. Fun stuff for spring, I can’t wait until next rehearsal, I want to hear everything together again!
Listening to…….Solas last. They’re okay. And, I dunno, I’m wandering again. I haven’t been listening to anything in particular, so we’ll just see what my next craze is. I’m such a spaz, I listen to something nonstop for months at a time and then switch to something else. I like them all the time, I just listen to two or three random tings over and over without much else in between.
We’ll have to see. I often start listening to more traditional things in the spring, don’t know why, it just seems right.
I might play for a fair nearby again……they hired me a few years ago to play fiddle. Hmm, that might be good, I toyed with the idea of offering to do more than provide background noise, like maybe a talk or something but I don’t know. Maybe I’ll just play through the day, they had street musicians last time.
Hmm, and I could put that towards a new concertina……..that would certainly be good.
235- Yeah, something about Solas doesn’t quite click with me, but I do like their album “Pastures of Plenty.”
233- I didn’t mean that you’re obsessed, I just meant that since I’ve never heard of some of those bands I’m obviously not as obsessed as I thought I was.
234- You sound like a 9 year old girl discussing Hannah Montana. *Ohmygosh*
I have listened to the Final Riot! live CD going on 4 times in a row since I got out of school earlier. I’m on a paramore high.
237-Again, not really electronica, but but at least electronic-influenced.
238-There’s never any sales anymore, which makes me really excited when something good has a sale.
For some reason the weird al song “the brady bunch” (although that old tv show is annoying) makes me feel really good inside.
Listening to: “Cry For You” by September, on my Pandora Cascada station. I love Pandora!!
239- Bad economy sucks, right?
241- Pandora does, indeed, rock.
So, this British guy came to our school today to talk about the drums. Basically like an assembly where he played the drums for us and talked about drumming, etc. Well, at the beginning, he asked us to name some of our favorite bands. My hand shot up, and when he pointed to me, I said Paramore and My Chemical Romance. He hadn’t heard of MCR (fool) but he did know Paramore. He asked if I knew the song That’s What You Get, and I foolishly told him I knew all the words. He then instructed me to sing the lyrics while he drummed. It wasn’t embarassing; it was rather cool. I sang all right!
236~ I only have their CD “For Love and Laughter” and I like “Seven Curses” and “Merry Go Round” but none of the others so much. I don’t know why, but their music always seems sort of like the annoying music you hear at the store, only it’s Celtic.
My iPod earbuds are disintegrating. It’s very sad, the rubber bit around the edge is peeling off of the right one. It doesn’t really affect the rest of it, it’s just annoying. I must say, the new style (these, with the rubber) are more comfortable than the old ones, but not as well made. *sigh* But they don’t dent my violin when I hit it with them like I did that other time……..oops.
Does anyone else here play along (not sing) with their CDs? I do all the time, it’s a great way to learn new tunes and to play like you’re with someone else.
Of course, actually finding people to play music with is better, but when that’s impossible CDs are good.
242~ Awesome!
242-You little diva! Made the mistake of telling him you knew the words, my left tonail. And yes, bad economy = nothing cool on cool sites.
Listening to the version of Lollipop by Framing Hanley. It’s like Punk Goes Crunk all over again.

Ta da!
244- Why, Beavo, you’re making me blush! You have the estemmed priveledge for being the first to ever call me a diva, though… it was rather fun, I must admit.
245- Is it sad that I know all the words to half of those songs?
The video for Womanizer is good. The dancing bit; not the whole singing-naked-in-a-sauna bit.
246-Diva! Diva diva diva! Nyah nyah nyah! And don’t worry, I knew the words to a quarter of them.
I actually like Aly & AJ. I really really like them, and they’re always so out of place on my playlists. Yeah, now I’ve got “On the Ride” in my head.
iTunes Genius is an idiot. I’m going to Pandora.
245- I have most of those songs, actually . Argh, my Pandora played SOS on the JoBros station (a. I was bored, b. my friend… need I say more?) and I got it yesterday. It’s actually a really good song, but it’s now stuck in my head. I got Cry For You, too.
Songs I got: (I rarely have access to Internet sophisticated enough to get any, so yes, most are a bit outdated)
Cry For You, September
Sober, P!nk (that is, actually, how she spells it)
Miss Independent, Ne-Yo
I Will Be, Leona Lewis
S.O.S, the Jonas Brothers
Forever, Chris Brown (I’ve been meaning to get it, even if he is a criminal. I’m not showing my support for the hottest guy in the world or anything, not that he is; most of my friends are obsessed, and heartbroken over the current state of affairs).
Perfect Day, Cascada
Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), Beyonce
Gives You Hell, The All-American Rejects
247- Diva in a good way or a bad way, that is? And there was one Aly and AJ song I like, I kind of forget it now… but I do like one of their songs.
248- Have you seen the video for Burnin’ Up? It’s pretty whacked out…
248: How you know I’m a nerd: when I saw SOS, I thought of ABBA.
Seriously. Go look up Iris. lt’s a good song.
249- Aren’t they all? No, I haven’t seen it.
251- Some girls at my camp last year did a remake of it; it was hilarious. There’s a secret agent dude… it’s pretty funny…
So, the Paramore tickets in Boston are so expensive. My dad isn’t even sure he wants to take me anymore. The only ones he said he’d get were in the VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY back, where you can’t even hear the music, and even those are $100. I WAS SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!! I WAS GOING TO BRING A 146 SIGN AND HOLD IT UP TO HAYLEY AND SCREAM THE LYRICS AND ROCK OUT TO NO DOUBT EVEN THOUGH I DON’T KNOW THEM THAT WELL!!!!!!! Stupid failing economy, making everything expensive…
DARNED OSCARS! They were awesome, but now I have “Top Hat White Tie and Tails” stuck in my head. I’ve been singing it for a week, for cripes’ sake! Help me!
“I’m puttin’ on my top hat,
Tyin’ up my white tie,
Brushin’ off my tails.
I’m dudin’ up my shirt front,
Puttin’ in the shirt studs,
Polishin’ my nails,
I’m steppin’ out, my dear,
To breathe an atmosphere
That simply reeks with class;
And I trust that you’ll excuse my dust
When I step on the gas,
For I’ll be there,
Puttin’ down my top hat,
Mussin’ up my white tie,
Dancin’ in my tails!”
*grumble* *headdesk*
Random songs I like (some of the titles may be wrong):
Stand In The Rain
Unwritten
Teardrops On My Guitar
Love Story
I’m Yours
When I Ruled The World
Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
Time Of Your Life
All The Small Things
255- I’m guessing that “When I Ruled the World” is actually Viva la Vida by Coldplay, and “TIme of Your LIfe” is Good Riddance by Green Day (though I’ve only heard that a few times).
I’ve been on a big Ayreon spree lately. So good! And it’s just one guy composing it all! Oh my goodness love.
My guilty pleasure song has to be Gives You Hell by All American Regects, but other fav songs are:
Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls
All These Things That I have Done by the Killers
Dark of the Matinee by Franz Ferdinand
Violet Hill by Coldplay
Fix You by Coldplay
Of course, Coldplay and The Killers are my favorite artists, but Franz Ferdinand is great. For female singers, I love KT Tunstall.
I made a Pandora station that has The Killers, Coldplay, Keane, Maroon 5, and Franz Ferdinand. It is the best station ever! Plays all the songs I don’t have but love.
I love San Francisco by Scott Mackenzie. It reminds me of Luna Lovegood. Go look it up. Now.
Awesome songs:
Iris
Fake it by Seether
I’m on Fire by Bruce Springsteen
Dance, Dance, Dance by ?
American Idiot by Green Day
Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day
Seven Deadly Sins by Flogging Molly
Jerk it out by the Ceasars
Play it loud by MXPX
and of course, a boatload of video game tracks. Also, although I wrote it near the bottom, SDS is probably up there in the top 5 or so.
257- Same here! Another one of mine is Womanizer. I clean my room to it.
So, Regina Spektor is pretty cool.
P.D.Q. Bach. Love. Go look it up. And laugh.
249-A good way, darling MissSwann. I’m probably a worse diva than you; I’m an Aries.
Comments on Gives You Hell- Ah! It’s an okay song, I guess, but It’s SO not AAR.
Can you believe I didn’t get what was so bad about If You Seek Amy until I was TOLD by someone? And I don’t get the big fuss about it, it’s not like Lil’ Wayne’s Lollipop was any less suggestive…
Dad is playing Moonlight Sonota. It’s making me all sad.
They added the song Human by the Killers into our play, for a dance sequence when the Darling’s living room turns into Neverland. It’s awesome.
Anyone else listen to vinyl on here? I dug out my parents’ stash last night and found that only about three-fourths was completely coated in dust.
261- Ah, dahlink, an Aries! You probably are. Your Yahoo horoscope says you’ll begin to feel out of control if you don’t clean up your surroundings; try getting rid of some of your crap.
262- Not really. All my parents have is Christmas music, and buying vinyl is so expensive now.
262-We have multitudes of vinyl, but we haven’t played them since who knows when.
THERE’S A VINYL EDITION OF THREE CHEERS! WANT.
263-Ew, Yahoo horoscope. Tarot’s better. Although that’s kind of true, I just cleaned up my room for the fifth time this week, but that’s because Clarissa’s [supposed to be] coming over.
Have you guys (I’m sure you have) heard Tarja without the rest of Nightwish? Look up the album Winter Storm. I’m listening to “I Walk Alone” and [sarcasm] for SOME reason I think it has something to do with her being dumped from the band, and Dark Passion Play’s Bye Bye Beautiful has SOMETHING to do with Tarja leaving… it kind of seems like they can’t pick up the phone and talk, so they write songs about each other now.
Their new album is like, Made In Tokyo And Other Places or something. Yack.
264- There’s a vinyl of the Twilight soundtrack. Have you heard MCR’s Desolation Row for Watchmen? It’s ok, but it’s till MCR…
261- …there’s controversy surrounding If You Seek Amy? I heard about the song, and then I went through my iPod and found five or six songs which actually involve profanity in the title, and which I see nothing wrong with. I understood the title myself, though.
262- I would if I understood how to work our record player. And if I could plug in headphones to it. And if we had something on vinyl I particularly wanted to listen to…
265-I’ve heard a lot about it, and I was about to watch the video, but I didn’t…
266-Maybe not where you are, but the TV people here haped about it, which is sad because a) Britney is a TV punching bag no matter what she does and b) aren’t there more important things to harp about? Chris Crocker got so mad he had to make a video about it. Then again, he makes videos about everything…
Speaking of profanity in titles, Mom got all nasty because I have an album called “Friends With Benefits”. Lucky she hasn’t seen the cover of my “Cupcakes Taste Like Violence”, I don’t think she’d be happy with a transvestite wearing a skimpy swimsuit posing in a suggestive way.
262- We used to, but then the stylus on our record player broke (years ago) and we haven’t since. I’ve been sort of pestering my mom about it, though, because I want to listen to the Donovan albums we have on vinyl and I can’t find them on iTunes.
Hmmm… i have weird tastes.
Bands i like:
Manu chao
Silly wizard
Tannahill weavers
Apocalyptica
Bob dylan
Woody guthrie
Ladysmith black mambazo
Tinariwen
Ali Farka Toure
Amadou and mariam
My parents had weird tastes, or so I can divine from their collections. Of course, there’s the Beatles, the Monkees, etc., but, as they got older, their preferences got weird. My mom got really into John Lennon and Olivia Newton-John, and my dad apparently enjoyed Steppenwolf and Simon and Garfunkel. Right now I’m listening to the album Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine, by the Doors. I can actually tell that vinyl is just a better quality than CD or MP3. I’m listening to it on our cheap equipment, but I may drag out my dad’s old HiFi stuff later. I read somewhere that, though CD sales are dropping in this economy, vinyl sales are actually growing quite quickly. [/rambling]
Um, look at my name and you’ll know who MY favorite band is. My favorite Beatles songs are I am the Walrus, I’m Only Sleeping, Yellow Submarine, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields Forever, Hello, Goodbye, Within You Without You (or anything from the Sgt. Pepper album), All You Need is Love, Come Together, Drive My Car, The Word, Doctor Robert, Here, There and Everywhere, (that’s all one song) Good Day Sunshine and TAXMAN! Yeah!
I hereby award “I am the Walrus” with the highly-acclaimed “Weirdest Lyrics” award. “Come Together” came in at a close second.
270- Your mom’s tastes aren’t THAT weird! Liking John Lennon isn’t weird at all!
P.S. I HATE the Jonas Brothers! They sang “Hello, Goodbye” on that Target commercial terribly! AURGHHHH I don’t see how they (the jonas bros.) are so special!!!!!
264- Oohh Beavo you would appreciate this: There is a guy on youtube, I think his name is Michael Worek or something who wrote piano versions of a bunch of Nightwish songs. They are really very beautiful. He also has a clip of him playing a Nightwish song on guitar and I am envious of how good he is >.<
As for Tarja… eh… I personally didn’t really like her voice. She also wasn’t a very nice person or so it sounds, but musically I like Annette better.
But all of you should go check out the piano versions of Nightwish songs!
269~ Silly Wizards….I only have a few songs by them, but I love those I have. I also have (and ADORE) some of the work members of the group (Johnny Cunningham and Andy Stewart, namely) did outside of the band. Very good taste.
The Tannies are amazing too. ♥ ♥ ♥
I’ll just nod appreciatively at Bob Dylan. I have (again) not a lot of his stuff, but what I do have is wonderful.
My dad is a fan of Woody Guthrie, and I spent a lot of time listening to him when I was younger.
Oh, here’s something. Are there any other closet big-band fans out there on MB? I adore Glenn Miller….*sheepish grin* anyone else?
271- No, I like Lennon. It’s the Olivia Newton-John and the Steppenwolf by which I was surprised.
Right now I’m listening to Blue Öyster Cult.
I second any anti-Jonas rhetoric.
261:
a. I lurves PDQ bach. Used to listen to tapes in the car when I was little (and still do now…)
b. Wait! What’s wrong with the title of the song? I don’t see any profanity… *wikipedia* OH! Oh. I get it. Wow. heh heh
Has anyone else heard of Latin Quarter? British band from the 80s/90s?
267- It’s an okay song, but the music video makes it better. It ROCKS.
OMG NEW MCR CD COMING OUT
272-Really, you like Annette better? You’re the only person I know. I found her voice more whiny than Tarja’s, who was more opera. But yeah, she kind of seemed mean, and I guess I could see what they meant by the fame going to her head in her first open letter.
I can play the beginning and some of Amaranth, but nothing else. Mom was like “that’s so cool” and I was like “it’s metal” and she was like “ew it was horrid”.
277-IKR? Super excited, because their songs have been covers for the last forever. Getting a bit tired of it… This is the first time My Chem has put out an album while being superduper famous, I wonder what’s going to happen. Explosions? I hope not.
278- Odd, I thought Tarja was the whiny-sounding one. It’s the way she slides up to every single note. I just don’t think that’s good musical practice, really. And vibrato is nice but too much is… eh. I just felt like she was overdoing a lot of her singing. If she’d toned it down a bit, I would have liked her better, probably. It just annoys me, meh.
My friend likes Annette better as well, and one other person I know.
Didn’t Fridgy prefer her as well?
Did you listen to the piano versions?
Anyone here like steeleye span?
280- Ooh, I love Steeleye Span! I have “Below the Salt.”
Anybody know muse?
282- I LOVE MUSE!!! ‘Starlight’ is my life anthem. I could not go without them.
278- The guy who seems to live at Hot Topic in my mall will probably blow up the video store in celebration (I wouldn’t put it past him; he looks like a stalker dude, and I have NEVER seen him leave HT). I’m going to BEG my parents to go to a midnight release with my friend Viks.
MUSE! YAY!
280~ What Alice said. I like Steeleye Span and I have their album Below the Salt. I was just listening to it a few minutes ago, as a matter of fact!
Has anyone heard of Latin Quarter? I have some of their songs (a friend sent them) and I was wondering if anyone else listened to them.
DIE, JONAS BROTHERS, DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
274– Have you heard John Lennon’s “Imagine”? I listened to it, like, five times today. It’s an amazingly good song.
271– You can stop obsessing now, PPTBR! And yes, it is me, your cousin. Yeah, I saw you yesterday. Kind of wish I hadn’t. . .
286- Amen to that. And I can play Imagine on the piano! It’s really pretty…
OOO! I just finished by big Beethoven sonata! Op. 49 in G Major. I might have to record my self playing it and send it in.
Awww, come on! This thread can’t die!!!!!!!!!
I want to get into concert band in eigth grade, so next year I’m switching out of the multitudes of clarinets and going to be a tuba.
my old piano teacher just asked me and my brother to play trumpet and horn respectively at his church. he accompanied us for solo+ensemble and i guess thought we were good
290- I am one of the two in our school’s percussion ‘ensemble’. I hate band. It destroys any desire kids have to pursue music by making it boring and stupid.
291- Long time no see! I got roped into playing organ at stations of the cross during Lent at my church. If only I got paid…
293- You play organ? I started playing a few months ago…
Currently listening to:
“Is It So Marigold?” by Donny Hue and the Colors.
Only it just changed to “Chimerical Cat.”
Donny Hue came and played here in town, like two weeks before I’d heard of them. Agh. Despair.
Listening to: I’d Rather Dance With You by the Kings of Convenience. It’s my theme song for this week.
279-I saw some of the piano ones. Most weren’t that great. I don’t think they were the ones you suggested, though, I looked up “nightwish covers” and apparently everyone on frigging YouTube has one.
294- Yup. I’ve been playing for… roughly three and a half years, but I’ve been playing piano for about nine, so I had a good start on organ.
Overwhelmingly addicted to Blue Öyster Cult and the Doors because of the vinyl I found. Now that’s music, my friends.
Right now I’m listening to “She’s Leaving Home” by the Beatles. I love this song to death.
Wednesday morning at five ‘o clock
as the day begins
Silently closing her bedroom door
leaving the note she had hoped would say more
She goes downstairs to the kitchen
clutching her handkerchief
Quietly turning the back door key
Stepping outside she is free
She (We gave her most of our lives)
is leaving (Sacrificed most of our lives)
Home (We gave her ev’rything money could buy)
She’s leaving home after living alone for so many years, bye bye.
That’s just the first verse.
Overall, covers are HORRIBLE compared to the original. A few examples:
-Hello Goodbye by the Jonas Brothers (original: Beatles)
-I am the Walrus by Oasis (original: again Beatles)
-Come Together from Across the Universe (original: you guessed it – beatles)
-What’s This by Fall Out Boys (original: Nightmare before Christmas)
292 – Speaking of organ, I just LOVE the final boss music from Super Mario 64.
299-Agree. I’ve only heard like, two good covers in my life.
I need to watch Chicago. I’m listening to Cell Block Tango, and I think it’s amazing.
299- Complete agreement here. People are basically saying that the originals weren’t good enough and that the new people are better. You can’t improve a Beatles song because you can’t improve perfection. Why can’t people just get that through their skulls?
299-301: I completely agree, except for about two special cases. One is Roxanne from Moulin Rouge, and I think Your Song from Moulin Rouge ties with the original.
Has anyone heard Justin Nozuka? He’s like Jason Mraz only a little bit more raspy. He’s quite good. I also like Carolina Liar ( or the three songs I’ve heard by them. I have a weakness for the free songs on iTunes)
300- LOVE that musical. Sang When You’re Good to Mama for an audition once.
292: My… band… *twitch*… is… AWESOME!
Okay, today we didn’t play and we had another “ask Mr. Fish” game. We ask Mr. Fish random questions about him. Ajay asked him, “What’s your computer password?” “None of your business.” “I’ll try that!” And Mr. Fish has been C.T.ed. Like TPing, except with corn tortillas! *dies laughing*
l wish one of the Musers was in my band. Mr. Fish is the best band teacher EVAH.
Pandora was being pretty awesome.
I don’t know where else to put this. Sorry.
I’m officially obsessed with So You Think You Can Dance. I watched this one girl from Australia named Forever… her performance almost made me cry. It’s a wonderful talent to be able to push the most human emotions through your body and share their beauty with an audience. She was dressed in ripped clothes with crazy hair and Joker-esque makeup, which also shows you don’t need blonde hair and blue eyes to express extreme beauty. Her dancing made her beautiful, no matter how ugly she looked.
I also watched Mark and Chelsie’s Bleeding Love dance, which was wonderful. They acted that song out perfectly, it wasn’t just a dance, but a scene. I loved it.
I am kind of in love with Flyleaf right now. They’re a really cool band.
I am obsessed with “Thinking of You” by Katy Perry. That music video makes me cry at the end every time I watch it.
I think I’ll go watch it now.
Oh, my, goodness, that music video is sooo good. The only reason I even slightly like Kate Perry is becuase of that song.
That and ‘Hot N Cold’. I find that video slightly amusing as well.
Currently listening to the Beatles’ White Album. So far I like it well enough. I was rather intimidated because it’s supposed to be so weird and different, but while it’s not AMAZING, any of it, it’s not scary either.
Re: Silly Wizard: I’ve listened to at least one of their songs, and it was very funny. I dunno what happened to that album though.
310- Apparently you haven’t gotten to “Revolution 9” yet.
On the topic of music videos, you all should go watch “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” by Journey. It is by far the cheesiest video I have ever seen.
311- No. I got bored before I got that far.
I will maintain to my death that the song “Bungalow Bill” by the beatles has elmo singing backup. Even though the song came before sesame street, I swear to god I hear elmos voice in the background during the song.
311- I remember laughing my miniature arse off in my carseat when Rev. #9 came on. I just didn’t get it, and I found it hilarious.
I am mad at John. My piano teacher told me she would have a heart attack if I found a cello player to play in a trio thing she had envisioned, and Anna said that John played cello. I IMed him just now, and he said that he taught himself to play, he can’t read music, and can’t play anything much beyond London Bridge. Do you know how hard it is to find a cello player???
299- Please, please PLEASE don’t get me started on Hello Goodbye. The first time I saw the Jonas Brothers perform it on that ghastly Target commercial, I screamed. I completely lost it. I started yelling to my best friend, (who, unfortunately for her, had to witness my reaction) “This has brought the rock ‘n’ roll world to its KNEES!”
I love overreacting, don’t you?
Listening to Gyrate by Da Musicianz feat. Mr. Collipark.
I’m sorry, I fall for Colliparks beats every time. It’s sad how degenerate the music is, but GOD! It’s bouncy. I can’t help it.
Listening to: Seranta Mila Kokkina (40 red Apples)- Lizeta Nikolau
Pontic Greek music is amazing.
315- Oh, it’s not ovvereacting. It’s reacting.
316- Nice title.
I’ve had Perfect by Flyleaf stuck in my haead for the past 48 hours. Save me, please.
318-‘Skay, I had I Can’t Do It Alone by 3oh!3 in my head for the past WEEK.
Back it up, back it up! If you talking **** to me.
Smack it up, smack it up! If you act a ***** to me.
Stack it up, stack it up! If you ******* rich as me.
My daddy owns a dealership the rest is ******* history.
This ain’t a love song! (No, no)
This ain’t a whiskey drowned ballad
There ain’t nothin’ here that’s valid
This ain’t a love song! (No no, no no)
This ain’t a broken heart homie
Singin’ only ’cause he’s lonley
So tell me baby, pretty baby that this house is not a graveyard
Tell me how to stay strong and carry you home
Over corpses, over fathers and their unborn daughters
God ****** I can’t do it alone!
I borrowed my friend’s “I brought you the bullets, you brought me your love” and I’m uploading it now. It’s so different from The Black Parade, Three Cheers, even. I think The Black Parade is my favorite now because the songs meant so much to me at that time, but I feel like sometimes I don’t need My Chemical Romance anymore. But then I get all sad and realize that I do.
320- Ungh, I hate that CD! It totally doesn’t do them justice. I got it for Christmas from my friend, and it was the special edition, so it came with a bonus CD with all these random artists on it. And, quite frankly, it was much better than the actual MCRness. I like Sweet Revenge because of the intense rock, and Black Parade for the variety of songs. and I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEW ALBUM OMG AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am looking forward to the new Wintersun album, Time. Currently I am listening to their old one, which is self-titled. It is amazing how fast their guitars can play… and still have melodies.
I kind of want a Regina Spektor album, but I am broke.
WAKING UP IN VEGAS BY KATY PERRY IS IN MY HEAD AND IT IS A GOOD SONG. (Btw…)
323- Regina Spektor is good. I like Switchfoot, Fall Out Boy (sort of), Thousand Foot Krutch, Kutless, Skillet, Homecoming by Hey Monday, and old John Mayer songs, such as: No Such Thing, Why Georgia, My Stupid Mouth, Back To You, 3×5, etc. (but not Your Body is a Wonderland. That song is just stupid. (No offense to anyone who likes that song!))
(Please note: I am a boy!!)
311- If you want to see a cool music video, check out “We Are One Tonight” by Switchfoot. The video is cool because it like morphs from one person to the next. (For example, at one point there is someone jumping rope, and then the drummer appears, with the camera angle behind him, and his arms are doing the same motion.) The song isn’t half bad, either.
324- Ah, Christian music. I kind of hate Christian music, with the exception of Flyleaf. It’s so boring and pointless. I like John Mayer, though, and Fallout Boy is good.
The Thinking of You music video is sad.
Hey! Just because Skillet and TFK and Kutless and Switchfoot are Christian, doesnt mean that they arent good! The songs are not “worship songs”. In fact, Skillet and TFK and Kutless are heavy metal . So dont say you dont like it just because it’s “christian music”. Honestly.
326- I hate it too. Whenever I hear it, I can’t help think of Jesus and the vendors outside the synagogue. Not to be disrespectful to any Christian artists or fans thereof, but it seems to me as though they’re just profiting off religion. Now Gregorian chant–that’s Christian music.
According to Wikipedia, Skillet and Switchfoot are hard rock. Kutless is hard rock/nu metal. Nu metal doesn’t count as metal — it’s sellouts trying to be trve and kvlt and grim. Listen to some real metal — see Jade’s and Ebeth’s lists. And if you want something classified as “heavy metal” (or NWOBHM [New Wave of British Heavy Metal]), try Iron Maiden. Yes, it’s mentioned on the lists. But Maiden deserves special mention.
And, of course, Elvenking is mandatory.
329- Dude, Skillet is totally metal. You haven’t heard “Whispers In the Dark”. And it is at least twice as heavy as Switchfoot.
ARGH! This has been bugging me for ages, and I can’t figure it out.
On the album “The Hurdy-Gurdy Man” by Donovan (which has nothing to do with hurdy-gurdies as far as I can tell) there are two songs which use melodies, or snippets of melodies, from Beatles songs. One of them is “Peregrine Falcon” and the other is “Hi It’s Been a Long Time.” The latter is especially obvious, but I can’t place it. I think it’s from the Magical Mystery Tour, but I don’t know. Does anyone know? Has anyone here even heard Donovan?
All of the GAPAs have heard Donovan, of course, and I’ve met his daughter-in-law.
in the movie “Don’t Look Back,” about Bob Dylan’s first tour of Britain, Dylan keeps playing in towns that Donovan (who was then more popular and famous) has just left. It’s funny; you should rent it if you get a chance.
330-and switchfoot isn’t heavy at all. sorry, but that’s not metal.
in other news, i told devin i’d give green day another chance. some of their older stuff is actually pretty good, but then of course some of it is just downright annoying. and american idiot is still just as awful as it was four or five years ago. Still, i have to at least partially rescind some of my Green Day hate. A little.
Listening to all my songs in alphabetical order. Again. Up to American Wedding by Gogol Bordello. I have nine songs that start with “American,” from American Abroad by Against Me to Americana by (i think?) The Offspring (someone can look that up if they want, i’m too lazy)
Also, we sold the G4 downstairs, the lamp-style (or whatever you call it) mac moved downstairs from the guest room, and my dad bought a new macbook (He lost his job at the Dispatch so he’s doing freelance editing until he gets another job, hence the nice computer. but i will probably get the shiny when i go to college :D) Anyway, the main result of all this regarding music is that we didn’t have enough room to move a lot of my music, so everything on my ipod was deleted until we could get the external hard drive set up. tonight i’m gonna start moving everything back over and it’s going to take an obnoxiously long time
321-I’m so afraid of My Chem sucking now that they’re way popular. The explosion coming from the general direction of our local Hot Topic might kill people in a ten mile radius if it does. They played a song from Sweet Revenge while I was at Hot Topic, by the way, and being the only album I completely missed, everyone there broke into song and I had to go hide in the belts section.
326-Atreyu is Christian! I love Atreyu!
Re: Skillit and Switchfoot- Not heavy metal. Like Glassy said. I’m no expert, yeah, but they’re not metal. I’m not saying Skillit is bad, or even that NuMetal is bad (I like Korn, as annoyingly typical as that is) but it’s not metal, heavy or otherwise.
SFTDP.
Look up “Rites of Ash”. I love the song “Burn”. It actually has a music video. Which is surprising considering it’s from a small DC record label. They’re where Cassandra Syndrome came from, btw. Look them up too.
331- Is it “Wait” from Rubber Soul? That was the first song which popped into my head with that line.
336- I don’t think so, because I recognize this, and I haven’t heard that. Anyway, it’s not the lyrics that are from another song, it’s the music.
(333) Sorry to hear about your dad’s job, ebeth. Good luck to him!
Listening to: Creepy Crawler by Zombie Girl. Just found them on Morbid Outlook, this song is pretty good.
I got the 3oh!3 CD Want, and the new Silverstein CD Shipwreck in the Sand today. I also finally imported Bullets and The Black Parade is Dead! into my computor. Lots of new music=happy Beavo.
Hot Topic’s music supply makes me mad. I don’t think Lil’ Wayne and Kanye West should be there at all, they do not belong in the same rack as Mindless Self Indulgence.
Has anybody heard the “Dodgson, we got Dodgson here!” remix? Go look it up on youtube if not. It is probably the funniest thing ever XD. It’s stupid, but so much so that it’s also insanely funny.
Whoever mentioned Skillet, they are not metal… maybe alt rock or something, but not at all metal. Go listen to Kirki by Korpiklaani and then maybe you will be able to tell the difference between metal and what is most definitely not. Or better yet go look at my list in post 41!
Got another Modest Mouse cd out of boredom, it’s okay, but it was one of their really early works and you can tell. I hope they make a new one sometime soon.
Also I can’t go to Paganfest. Again. D: *cries*
331– “It’s Been a Long Time” is from Rubber Soul. Does this answer your question?
Actually, “It’s Been a Long Time” is called “Wait,” and yes, it is from Rubber Soul.
I have recently become obsessed with the bands “HIM” and “The Rasmus”…they’re both Finnish bands that kind of scare me sometimes. Anyone else heard of them?
344 – No. I am obsessed with Green Day and Flogging Molly, and yet I’ve only heard four of their songs (total) :P.
344-HIM is pretty cool. I’m not a big fan, but I like them. Why do they scare you?
If you haven’t, watch the video for Join Me In Death in the dark.
Okay, so usually I’m not really into the Pop Goes — albums, but Punk Goes Pop Vol II is AMAZING.
342, 343- Yes, I already said that, and Alice said she didn’t think that was it.
Call me crazy, but since I got my organ yesterday, I’ve already grown to love theatre organ music. Unfortunately, during silent movies it was almost exclusively improvised, so there’s extremely little sheet music for it. Meanwhile, I’m still loving the Doors. Now that was a rebellious group. Not the “Oh, society sucks, let’s go set fire to a library” sort of rebellion, but a mental rebellion, a “silent parade”, as they called it. If you haven’t listened to them, I’d suggest doing so. Their music’s amazing anyway.
344- I’ve heard of The Rasmus…not a huge fan but their music is pretty good.
I am in a terrible apathetic mood, listening to P!ATD (when it still had an exclamation mark in it…*sigh*), sitting in a dark room and trying to work on my Screnzy.
Play practice is just weekends. I got the part of ‘Liesl’ in The Sound Of Music, and with music on my mind I’ve turned my Screnzy into a musical. I also have to sing some Jesus Christ Superstar for my church choir…Good Friday Service…too much music, my vocal cords are going to shrivel up and die. So will my eyes for looking at a computer for this long in the dark.
Ah, the good old days when Panic was Panic!
I miss those days…and to be honest, I liked their music better then…*sigh* But I guess I can’t turn back time, so the new Panic it is!
No, I don’t listen to Panic, I think they’re terrible. Panic! is one of my favorite bands. Panic dosn’t enter my top one hundred.
I missed this thread.
I actually have money for iTunes now, so I can buy as much Elvinking and Nightwish as I desire!
The thing that I really dislike about the new Panic is that now they’re all about growing up. The Panic! I knew was all about being young and living without caring, now they’re all sophisticated, and-dare I say- high society. Too much for my liking.
Fall Out Boy, two weeks and counting! I am ecstatic. My friend might even have backstage passes! I would literally roll over and die, but, I’m not getting my hopes up…
I know that many people don’t listen to my music suggestions, but I’ve found something that I like and I think a lot of other people will like too. I found the song “Grace” by Apocalypta and Tomoyasu Hotei on a video game and i thought it was pretty sick. go check it out
352-OMFG CLARISSA IS GOING TO FOB CONCERT TOO!!! It’s the one with All Time Low, right?
Listen to Blood and Teenagers backwords. There’s videos on YouTube of what people think they’re saying… very lulz.
353-I listen! I love the song Monster now.
I found the most steriotypical band name ever: Eternal Tears of Sorrow. But they’re actually really good. The keyboardist is the same as the one from the band that produced U.S.C.H! (I can’t spell the name without looking it up). Kind of electronic metal.
APOCALYPTICA = OMFG
I’m making a playlist for my boyfriend, he’s a classical + 80’s music kind of guy, so I’m giving him some of my easy stuff to listen to:
Ahn Trio
Better Than Ezra
Carolina Liar
Celtic Woman
Coldplay
“Mad World” by Gary Jules
Gorrilaz
Incubus
Inti-Illimani
Jack Johnson
Jason Mraz
Jet
“Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny” by Lemon Demon
the Nashville Chamber Orchestra
Sara Sant’Ambrogio
Sick Puppies
Taylor Swift
The Kin
Aqualung
Quietdrive
Gary Julez’s “Mad World” is a really good song. I found it through Donnie Darko. It kind of describes some of the things I’ve thought about life… Anyways. Amazing song, good choice. Also yay for Sick Puppise and Lemon Demon, boo for Taylor Swift.
Apocalyptica! If anyone is looking for cello rock, I recommend Rasputina too.
I love Apocalypica. Metallica on cellos is win.
I need to go to a concert. Badly. And I mean a real metal one with long hair and screaming and headbanging and fun.
But I can’t go to Paganfest D:
So, so sad about that…
It’s weird, i was playing video games that I got but never bothered to play yesterday and I heard it on NHL 09, I believed. The game sucked, but I loved that song.
Oh. My. Gods.
I just looked up Apocalyptica. They completely RUIN the integrity of cellists everywhere!
… But they ruin it so absolutely gloriously. Freakin’ DAMN, that’s good.
So, now I’m set on finding every scrap of Ani and Apocalyptica there ever was recorded.
/gradster(1)/ – Secretary of Bureaucracy of the ASAP
I just looked it up too. I normally don’t like music like that very much, but on cello? It’s pretty much amazing.
I KNOW!
I need to find that sheet music. I want to play it right away.
Apocalyptica is goodness.
I agree with Jade. I’m so bored of iTunes. I need a real concert. Unfortunately, this is not going to happen until I turn eighteen. Damn parental authority. My God, Nightwish are NOT Satanists, okay?
Are you forealz? Yeesh, I went to my first real rock concert (because Trans-Siberian Orchestra doesn’t count) when I was 15, with a bunch of my 17-year old friends. We all piled into a car and away we went! My parents are really strict about almost everything, but they decided to let me see the concert.
Oh. But maybe that’s because they were supporting my music career. Apocalyptica was opening.
Talk to your parents – see if you can go with a group of your friends? There’s strength in numbers… *that’s where peer pressure comes in*
359- How do they ruin the integrity of cellists?
361- I think I’d be allowed to go to one, within reason, but the parentals would probably insist on one of them coming with, which would kill most of the fun. : /
I should actually get my license before my permit expires in July and give myself some freedom. Except I lost my permit when my wallet got lost/then stolen and mom lost the paper that would get me a new one so I can’t actually take the driving test >.<
Who else here thinks that Waken Open Air would be really awesome? Living in a tent and watching bands for 3 days straight… win.
A better question: How do they not?
Didn’t say I didn’t adore them, though, nor that they’re not completely amazing, which they are.
/gradster(1)/ – Secretary of Bureaucracy of the ASAP
359 – So sad you say that! I’m a cellist music major and am going into exactly that type of music. Apocalyptica is the band that inspired me to join the “dark side” of cello music. Before I listened to them, I was a straight klassical kid – one song, and my mind was blown apart. I actually cried the first time I saw them in concert, I was so overjoyed to see my idols live and so consumed by the soul and strength and raw power of the music.
*grumbles* I do wish I could at least talk with you.
I just started cello. Three, maybe four weeks ago. Mrs. Smith has me trying to play the Brandenburg Concerto (3), Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and something by Grieg for our end-of-year concert – and I just started bass clef at the same time, too. I’m scared.
Also, question for a seasoned cellist: Any way to keep her from detuning? So severely, sometimes, that the strings will actually come off (mostly the A string). I’ve looked into it, and I’m not switching temperatures on her too much, and I have pushed the knobs in AMAP. Nevertheless, it happens. Help?
/gradster(1)/ – Secretary of Bureaucracy of the ASAP
I can’t go because “rock music is the reason why the world sucks”, “my brain is being turned to mush” “metal = nazis” and other equally as stupid arguments. I was going to go to Warped this year with a bunch of people (even though it’ll probably suck) and they were like nooo and I was going to go to Panic! for my sixth monthaversary and nooo and I was going to go to Nightwish but that didn’t even happen and now I can’t go to the Birthday Massacre and I Am Ghost. My girlfriend is going with two of my friends instead.
The Rasmus is teh pwnage!!!!!
Oh, I almost forgot. Guess what happened yesterday!
I found out how to play The Scientist by Coldplay on my cello. Coincidentally, my friend can play the piano part. So we practiced and then tried out for a solo in the spring concert, and we GOT it. I am so freakin’ excited. We’re playing alternative at a classical concert. I mean, I love classical and all, but this is awesome.Coldplay is teh pwnage.
“Nobody said it was easy
Oh, it’s such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said that it would be this hard,
Oh take me back to the start…”
You play cello? And you have a spring concert with a piano?! This is really coincedential. I play cello too and I happen to have a cello recital in the spring (in 4 weeks) with my cello teacher and a pianist. Go Vivaldi!
YAY, VIVALDI!!!
I love his work. I think that The Four Seasons was my favorite orchestra experience. I’d have to say that my favorite season was either Autumn or Spring, probably Spring. That sounds really exciting! Which Vivaldi are you playing?
I’m playing the Vivaldi Concerto in G Minor, RV 531 for Two Cellos and a Piano. Look it up, it’s good.
Vivaldi, Baroque composer/Wrote violin concertos/Most famous/Of all/Is the four seasons!!!!
Song I learned in music class a long time ago. ‘Tis a wonder I can still remember it…
Evanescence – Bring Me To Life
good song. also:
Viva la Vida (Whole album) – Coldplay
Room for Squares (everything except “Your Body Is a Wonderland”) – John Mayer
and… Centum 21 (its a song, not an album) – IcePointe
366- YES! Coldplay is teh pwnage!!
SFTDP
Alas. My Madrigals has a concert next Sunday. And we haven’t gotten our songs down AT ALL! Mostly because my teacher has had us do sectionals and my group is so lazy that I’m the only one singing. And we haven’t even sang all of our songs together yet. And it’s going to be a disaster! *sob*
Aww! I’m sure everything will be all right. Just, maybe, politely ask your group to work a little harder so that it doesn’t sound as though it’s missing too many parts.
You sound like our school orchestra. We have, maybe, 15 people (BAD NEWS BEARS!) and we’re playing the Bolero which is meant for a full symphony. Considering that our conductor is actually a choir teacher and doesn’t know even how to properly conduct, though, I’d say we’re not off so bad.
Bolero! I loove Bolero! Yay! I like classical music, one exception being David Bowie. I play piano and clarinet. Oh, and I like jazz, kind of, but rock, pop, or anything with electric guitars and loudspeakers is a nono for me because it gives me headaches.
I had a lovely weekend of playing music. I’m so incredibly lucky to be able to play with one of my favorite bands, or at least several members of it. Lots of fun doesn’t even begin to describe it.
Ring ring ring ring ring ring ring ring BANANAPHONE! Boo boo dee doo doo doo.
I have a concert on Thursday. I didn’t know how to read sheet music until three months ago. I’m not very good at fingering, I can’t count at all, and I’m sure there are a thousand little flaws in my playing that my uncle would point out in a moment but my teacher doesn’t. I couldn’t practice at all over the weekend because I was in Ashland, and my sister screams at me when I try to practice and I’m not ready and I won’t even tell my mother I have a concert because I don’t want her to know just how not ready I am. I haven’t practiced every day at all, sometimes because I haven’t time and sometimes because I just forget. The kids in my string class were a little surprised at the level of my distress, and my teacher says she’s not worried, but I think she’s just being nice.
I’m listening to the Kinks, which is nice, but it’s not fixing my problems, which is what I want.
Are you going to be the only one playing?
Well, and forgive me because this probably won’t help much, but I still get very insecure and nervous before playing in front of people, after 9 years of playing it still happens, and I doubt that it will ever go completely away.
However, you’ve not been playing long, unless you’re a violin prodigy yes, there are going to be flaws in your playing as compared to a player more experienced than you. For as long as you’ve been playing if you’ve been trying your hardest, then guess what? You’re as good as you can be at that point in time, and there’s no reason you should be any better right then. Later, yes, you should be better, but at this point you’re where you need to be. It might not be where you want to be, but you’re still building the foundation.
If your uncle points these things out, try to thank him sincerely for his advice (I don’t know your uncle, so I don’t know if he’s a helpful or blowhard type) and if he gives you a tip, try it out, it might help.
Is there anywhere you can go to practice that Opal won’t have a fit? Perhaps you could practice while she’s gone, or make an agreement that you have a certain time in which to practice. Or, maybe there’s somewhere else you could go to practice without disturbing anyone. A friend’s house, an empty classroom at school or something along those lines perhaps?
Do tell your mom that you’ve got a concert coming up. If she knows how much you feel unprepared she may be able to cut you some slack so you can get your things in order as well. Also, Thursday is coming up quick, she’ll want to be there, even if you feel that it’s going to be a disaster, and I’ve found through extensive research that mothers (well, mine at least) don’t like surprises like that in their schedules.
You’ll do fine, I’m sure you’re a much better player than you think. When playing the violin it’s very easy to hear all our mistakes because the sound comes out right under one’s ear, however when someone is a little bit away the same mistake sounds much less, if they can even hear it at all. It’s rather demoralizing, I know.
And now that I’ve said all that…..I’m playing this weekend for Snip days, and I didn’t learn more tunes for it like I’d promised myself I would. And I have no idea whether I should play in the evening as well. Expletive, I think I’ll go panic now.
1. I won’t be the only one playing, which is a mixed blessing. For one thing, my mistakes will be less obvious, but for another, I’ll have to try to keep up with the group.
2. Oh, my uncle’s very helpful. He came over one time for the Celtic dinner and gave me a lesson, which was incredibly helpful and improved my playing considerably, but it was late at night so I forgot most of his advice. I did get better at only moving my lower arm after that, though.
3. I believe I’m going to stay home from school tomorrow (not the best thing for my schoolwork-related stress, I’m afraid, but I do need sleep) and practice while she’s not around. And then I can tell my mother, and break the news slowly.
I’ll probably be fine, and if I’m not, well then, it won’t last forever. But I’m still scared.
Performances are always scary.
You’ll do fine though, I’m sure. Good luck!
You were right, Fiddler. My mother was rather upset that I didn’t tell her sooner. I then told her that I would prefer she didn’t come, and only then did she give me the whole well-if-you’d-practiced-more-you-wouldn’t-have-to-worry speech that I was dreading in the first place. Only it’s true. I haven’t practiced half as much as I could have.
Anyway, I’m going to go eat, then practice!
I have the same problem of not practicing. I only practice 2-3 times before my next lesson, when I should be practicing 5-6 times. Did you decide to be in a concert or did your teacher decide for you? If en decided, that’s not really that smart of en if you only started 3 months ago, and en isn’t correcting your mistakes. Have you tried putting frets on your fingerboard for your fingers to get used to the position? It helps A LOT, I had them on for half a year. You should just try to relax while playing and you’ll do fine. Good luck!
It’s a class, so the concert is mandatory, and I jumped in at the semester, so most of the kids have been playing about eight months or more. She does correct some of my mistakes, it’s just not quite as intensive as private lessons. And I do have frets. My fingering is fine, though a little slow. Most of my trouble comes from keeping time with other people.
Does anyone else find it odd that popular music seems to consist mainly of single songs, rather than artists or albums?
That’s because our generation is focussed on temporary pleasures. Quick stuff, fast love, momentary satisfaction.
We can only stand an artist for so long, and often it’s the one song.
Plus, a lot have one-hit wonders, if you’ll excuse the cliché.
… Excluding Boston. Everything by them is at the very LEAST tolerable, if not fantastic, which is what 90% of their stuff is.
/gradster(1)/ – Secretary of Bureaucracy of the ASAP
I think it’s mostly due to digital technology. Before songs became downloadable, you had to buy them packaged with other songs. Consequently, musicians put a lot of thought and effort into the packaging. Listening to an album is very different from listening to an individual song.
Our generation certainly had its share of one-hit wonders.
On the down side, many groups were pushed to churn out albums as fast as they could and ended up stuffing them with second-rate work and downright dross.
These things do follow technology, as Robert mentioned. Earlier generations grew up on singles, too, in the days of radio and 45 RPM. No one thought they were fixated on “quick stuff, fast love, and momentary satisfaction.” Well, no one except their parents.
True enough. There’s also a lot of dreck around whichever generation you happen to belong to. (The previous generation, of course, thinks it’s all dreck.)
Funny, I just had an counterproductive conversation with my Mom, her saying that My Chemical Romance and every other band produced since the 1800s sucks and isn’t worth listening to, me saying that I won’t have this conversation and her repeating herself. And now we’re talking about drecky music.
Yeah, most popular music nowadays is shallow and if you listen to it too much you’ll become a vegetable. But if you listen to the artist, you’ll realize it’s not worth listening to too soon and nobody will get money.
I don’t think I’ve ever posted on the music thread before. Just wanted to mention that the tunes running through my head all day have been a combination of Mozart’s Symphony 41 (for string orchestra), I Will Survive, Mamma Mia, (80’s songs, whaatt?) and… Poker face? That song that they played about 52.683 times at the most recent dance I was at. (2 weeks ago)
What an odd combination.
Hm, so the concert was not a fiasco. I sat in the back, so no one really heard me, individually–I don’t think. And J, who was there to play percussion, got her flute and played along to my music, which meant that when I got horribly off, she could point to where we were in the music and I could catch up. But it was pretty boring, actually.
What song did you play?
Good! I’m glad that it went well for you.
Does anyone know of a website with FREE downloadable sheet music? For piano?
I don’t think so. My mum might, tho!
Girl Talk. Ever heard of it?
Hilarious. The guy mashes up like forty different songs into four minutes of song and about fourteen songs per album, and sometimes it’s just fun but sometimes it’s hilarious.
Here’s thing thing, we started out friends, it was cool and it was all pretend
*LOUD GUITAR*
And since you been goneeeeee
*rapping* Get ******, get ****** get ******
I burst out laughing. Did NOT see that coming.
Choir concert tomorrow night, dress rehearsal tonight.
I hope I can sing alright, I can hardly breathe with my nose all plugged up. Ugh.
I want to play more music with people. Last week with Ship’s Co. was so much fun, I wish there were people around to play and sing with. Well, there are I suppose, but in Baltimore and DC areas, which is all fine, except that I can’t drive myself, and I doubt that even if I did I would be allowed (willingly) to go alone. *sigh*
I’m going to learn to sing.
I guess when I was little I could sing really well, but then there was this one song–“The Ash Grove” or something–that I kept trying to sing and there was this one verse, the bridge, that I always got wrong and mother would sing it for me correctly but I couldn’t hear the difference and kept getting it wrong, so I got self-conscious and stopped singing. I know I play violin and everything, but I can hardly tell one note from another and certainly don’t know how to make my voice do different notes. I know it does, but I just don’t know how to control it.
But I like singing so I always sing when I’m alone, or if it’s just me and Opal (because her opinion means nothing to me).
Anyway, the other day I was talking to Eva and Oliver Twist came up and then I had this amazing idea that our school should do Oliver! as the musical my senior year and I would audition and everything and I would be good so I could get a good part. I doubt the school will do Oliver! (although there’s a chance, since the drama teacher doesn’t like happy musicals and there’s really nothing more depressing than a good Dickens novel with starving orphans and beating people to death, even if it is a musical), but the idea of learning to sing is sticking with me, especially since half the auditions in the world require singing and even if I don’t want to act for ever I’d still like to try a bit of acting in the professional world.
Anyway, even if we did do Oliver, I doubt I could get a good part, since I don’t know how many female roles there are and Nancy’s probably a soprano, which I’m almost positive I’m not.
318~ Go for it! Singing is fun, since it’s an instrument that you can take with you anywhere, and trust me, it’ll open a lot of doors. Singing with people is a great way to make friends, there’s something about making music with someone that really pulls in everyone involved, and singing is so universal. *rambles off and becomes boring*
Anyway, singing is definitely something I’d recommend for everyone. Have fun!
I don’t think I have much range. I can’t go very low or very high before I lose all sense of tune and my voice cracks.
On the other hand, previous experiences my voice show it to be much higher when recorded. I’m not sure if that’s the effect recording has on everyone’s voice, or if my voice is actually higher than it seems to me (I heard once that everyone hears their own voice differently than outsiders). I don’t know what I think of that; I kind of like my voice. If it was much higher I think it would be all squeaky.
Time for a little experiment!
Mmkay, so I recorded myself singing a verse or two, then listened to it. These are my observations.
1. My voice is kind of nice. It’s not higher than I hear it. This is good.
2. I still have a lisp. Well, naturally. Where was it going to go? But still, it’s a bit annoying.
3. I’m not very good at singing.
4. I sound a little like my sister. How unpleasant.
5. I need to figure how to silence the metronome on GarageBand.
Pontic Greek music is absolutely beautiful.
Hey Monday is one of my recent acqusitions. I like “Homecoming”.
384~ Range is something that you will be able to work on and improve. Warming your voice up makes a huge difference too. I’m a first alto, I can get to an e (as in the highest open string on a violin), but that’s stretching it. I can’t hold those for very long, it hurts. Not sure how low I can get, I’ll have to try tat sometime…..seriously though, as you sing and challenge yourself more you’ll learn to work with what is easiest, and also how to get to the notes that are harder.
385~ I think my voice sounds higher when recorded as well. Well, perhaps not higher, just shriller. I don’t like how it sounds, especially when I’m singing, I think it sounds hideous, but everyone else tells me I sound like angel, so I keep singing in public.
Actually, last weekend when I sang with Ship’s Co. when they showed me how to use the mic and I just sang a bit to get used to it the sound coming from the speakers (in front of me and above) was pretty nice, but that’s about the only time I’ve heard my voice and liked it.
388- I think I’m an alto. I’m definitely not a soprano. I suppose it’s possible that I’m a tenor, but I kind of doubt it and I hope I’m not, because A.B. is a tenor and she says it’s hard to get parts in musicals because there aren’t any girl tenor parts. And half the reason I’m learning to sing well is because I want to be able to be in musicals (the other half is because I want to able to sing in public period).
389~ You’re probably an alto, alto 2 possibly if you’re lower.
Sopranos amaze me, there are a few ladies in our choir (soprano 1’s) who have the most crystal clear voices on the high notes, I really don’t know how they manage it but it sounds lovely, so I’m glad they do.
Are you actually taking lessons?
I hate the song So What, by Pink. I have no idea why, it just bothers me. Related to songs that bother me: Has anyone heard Gives You Hell, by the All American Rejects? The song’s all right, but at the beginning, when the singer first starts singing, it sounds irritating.
Some songs I like:
-Mad World (Really morbid and depressing, but I like it for some reason.)
-I’ll Follow You Into The Dark (Again, somewhat morbid and depressing. But nice.)
-1, 2, 3, 4
-Torn
-Complicated
How are Mad World and I’ll Follow You depressing? They have kind of melancholy sounds, but they’re not really sad songs.
There’s this kid from somewhere who dosn’t speak much English but thinks he’s REALLY COOL, and he’s always picking up these catchphrases and saying them like it makes him awesome, so there was one where he was like “so WHAT” and everyone would be like “I am a rockstar” because it was the natural response, and he’d get really pissed because he didn’t get it and be like “no you NOT”.
I really like the All-American Rejects, but that song is kind of obnoxious at the beginning.
I like “So What!”
1, 2, 3 ,4 bothers me…
So does Torn.
I <3 Complicated!!!
Never heard of the first two.
390- Lessons? Ha!
Well, possibly at some point, but certainly not right now. My plan of attack is as follows. Sing lots, play the violin lots, I’ll get better at telling notes apart and maybe I’ll get better at making my voice make the notes.
Been listening to the new Fall Out Boy album, Folie A Deux. I don’t understand why some people vehemently dislike it. I think it’s got some pretty good music. Even if you don’t like the band, I really strongly recommend the song ‘What A Catch, Donnie’. It’s been stuck in my head since Friday (since I went to their concert!!!!*squee*), and it’s really hard to keep something in my head that long. It’s such a good song, and the cameos at the end are really fantastic.
My favorite lines of the song:
“They say the captain goes down with the ship
So, when the world ends, will God go down with it?”
There’s a poem, it’s in Arabat, that’s like that. It’s about Satan winning and when he undoes creation God decides to let Satan undo himself as well.
392~ That sounds like a pretty good plan of attack to me. If you’re already playing music (and listening to it) then you should have a pretty god idea of how it’s supposed to sound, and that’s really the most important part I think. Someone can have a fabulous voice, but if they don’t know how it’s supposed to sound they can’t do anything with it.
Listening to right now:
-You know my name (Casino Royale theme)
-Another way to die (Quantum of Solace theme)
-various sonic music
specifically:
-What I’m made of
-Knight of the Wind
Listening to those… I just get a huge burst of adrenaline
Trying to get some youtube vids of the Duhks, but the computer is being possessed and evil. Ah, there goes. I’m trying to decide if I like their music. Well, I like it, I’m just trying to decide if I like it enough to get more of their music than I’ve ended up with already. *ponders*
I’m listening to Donavon Frankenreiter. Anyone heard of him? He’s a lot like Jack Johnson, and the two of them are actually friends.
The High End of the Low (Marilyn Manson) coming out in SIX DAYS! SO excited!
They already released a single, it’s not bad. Golden Age seems like it’s gonna be better. But still: band merch explosion!
I can’t get the song “lollipop” by mika out of my head. And I’m listening to falco-wow, he got weird in the end…
399 – Oh no, not that. Now I’m going to get it stuck in MY head…
Does anyone listen to Emilie Autumn?
I’ve known about her for a while, but I haven’t really listened to her, which was a big mistake. It’s amazing. She flawlessly melts genres into each other… classical music becomes electronic, electronics become classical… there’s crazy elements of metal and whatever else…
She’s amazing. So look her up.
If you like alternative bands, or just plain rock, listen to MuteMath. They are excellent!
* when is Muse [the band wooo!!] coming out with another CD im sick of waiting
* does anybody like kasabian? i love them ;D
* does anyone else think the chester french guys are extremely adorable and intelligent….watch an interview they are ALWAYS 60 times smarter than whoever interviews them
* you should listen to some bollywood music i’ll get recommendations
* new U2 album is AWESOME
all my music musings for now
I am excited for bollywood recommendations!
Is Kasabian named after Linda Kasabian, the Manson Family member? Just wondering…
iTunes just reccomended MuteMath.
OMG so Taylor said the new Marilyn Manson is amazing, which I believe. I need to borrow it!!
K, new Green Day CD: PURE AWESOMENESS.
Love love love it, particularly “Viva la Gloria” and “Peacemaker”.
I just listened to a few covers of Beatles songs and they still just can’t get it right.
-Oasis’ cover of I am the Walrus: practically the only thing you could hear was guitar reverb, they did everything too fast, the guy singing butchered the lyrics, and in one version I heard they didn’t even get the lyrics RIGHT.
-Jonas Brother’s cover of Hello Goodbye: It’s just… lyrics for a real rock song over pop music? No.
*screams and screams and screams and screams* Please, don’t mention covers for Beatles songs! I practically died when I saw that hideous Target commercial with those freaks the Jonas Brothers singing Hello Goodbye.
I’ve never heard Oasis’ version of I am the Walrus, and from your description, anyone within miles of my house are probably hoping I never will.
iTunes Just For You is being nice. They reccomended: Mudvayne, Krypteria, Shiny Toy Guns, Dimmu Borgir, Kalmah, Mute Math, and the Absence. Anyone listen to any of these bands? I’m looking for new stuff and I’m wondering if they’re any good.
Well, you saw my previous post. Listen to MuteMath!
Shiny Toy Guns is *amazing*. I’ve gotten more of We Are Pilots than Season of Poison stuck in my head, so I would recommend that album first. Also, Season of Poison demands that you listen to it all at once. My favorite song on We Are Pilots right now is When They Came for Us because of the robots. My favorite song on Season of Poison is When Did This Storm Begin, for no discernable reason.
All I’ve heard of Mute Math is the song Typical, but it has a pretty awesome music video.
Heehee, “The Dreaded Spoon” by Bruce Hornsby. Anyone here familiar with it? ‘Tis most amusing, I heard him play it two years ago (was it really that long?!) for the general festivities at Jamestown 2007 (not historical, but they had a lot of musicians for the weekend, and he’s a local to that area).
Currently listening to: “Another Day,” by Karan Casey
Has anyone here heard Karan Casey? She sang with Solas for a while, and she did “The Seal Maiden.” She’s also got a lot of other albums.
410~ Doesn’t ring a bell, though that doesn’t really mean that I haven’t ever heard of her or any of her music.
I only have one CD of Solas, For Love and Laughter, and I don’t know why, but it’s not one of my favorites. There’s only a few tracks that I really like, the rest just, I don’t know, doesn’t sit well. They’re good, but I can’t feel entirely comfortable with their music, I don’t know why. It’s most odd, and trying to describe it is even harder.
411- I have like six Solas albums (from my uncle), but I only like a few of the songs really. Like Pastures of Plenty, that’s a good one. I like Karan Casey on her own much better than Solas.
I have a couple Solas albums (stolen from my father), but, yeah, I tend to only listen to a couple of songs on each. Pastures of Plenty… The Wind that Shakes The Barley, Nil Na La, Johnny’s Gone for a Soldier…
My favorite traditional Irish music is still Altan… and now I have Mind the Gap as well as Lemonade and Buns by Kila (*cackles madly*)
I’ve always thought those Celtic Woman CDs were a little…hokey. Opinions?
I’ve just properly discovered The Decemberists–I bought The Crane Wife, and I love it. “Five wan vagabonds playing their peculiarly styled pop music.” Oh yes.
What do people think about Arcade Fire? I’ve been told that I’d like them also.
Is it possible to suffer from TMBG overdose? Because I think that may have happened to me. Not that I don’t still love them.
Yes, please, bollywood recommendations!
413- Ooh, I have Kila!
413~ Altan…..I think I have some of their stuff, they’re good. I think I might have one song by Kila, but yeah, it’s quite good too.
I’m going through a shanty phase…gee, I wonder why?
Does anyone else here work on composition? I recently composed my first piece (a bossa nova), and it was a great experience.
What instrument(s) did you write it for?
Well, jazz tunes are written to accommodate any instrument, but it was intended for trumpet, piano, bass, and drums.
I just “discovered” a hilarious song, “The last Saskatchewan Pirate”.
I must learn it. Now.
SFTDP
A little more sleuthing showed that it’s by the Arrogant Worms…I’d heard of them before but never come across any of their music (I wasn’t exactly trying or anything…). Heehee, but I think now I shall have to look up some more…*laughs and runs off singing*
Does anyone know the llama song?
Or Superstar by toybox?
**HILLARIOUS!!**
Not the llama song!! *groans*
There’s a video of Barrett’s Privateers with Stan Rogers singing it around a table with a handful of other guys. It’s a great video. I “discovered” it a few days ago, but I love it. It’s obviously “vintage”, they’re sitting around a table in what looks like a kitchen or something, and all of them are just completely loving singing right then and there, you can tell. It captures the mood of such a group of people perfectly.
I wish I was there. Watching it makes my eyes water, I wish, oh how I wish I could sing with friends like that more often. It’s one of those things that, when you’re there, everything is perfect. The music just surrounds you and it’s a fleeting moment that lasts forever. It’s one of the fundamental things that music means to me, on so many levels.
I don’t really know what I mean to accomplish with this post, but I’ll hit submit anyway.
419 – I know the first one, not the second one.
If anybody likes orchestrated music, I have a few words for you: Super Mario Galaxy’s Official Soundtrack. It’s mostly orchestrated and extremely good music.
I agree. I don’t actually own the soundtrack, but my father and sister were both playing the video game for awhile. You can imagine what was stuck in my head for a long time.
But yes, the soundtrack for Super Mario Galaxy is very good.
I’m sure you all remember the song Stacy’s Mom? Well I love the band that wrote that (mostly for their other songs), Fountains of Wayne. My favorite CD of theirs is Utopia Parkway, with Red Dragon Tattoo on it. The song is hilarious and about this guy who gets a tattoo to impress his girlfriend. The lyrics are the impressive part.
Also does anybody know the bands/singers Keane, Mae, KT Tunstall, or Hellogoodbye?
409) I know who Bruce Hornsby is, but I don’t know that specific song
I <3 KT Tunstall! So does my mom, actually. The first time she’s ever liked any of my music
my parents do, too actually. They monitor all the music that comes into the house and my dad recorded a concert of hers and everything. I like talking to my parents about music I like, but most of the time they just don’t like it at all. It’s not like I listen to rap or anything…
422.1) I have two albums, Drastic Fantastic and Eye to the Telescope. the second is my favorite, I haven’t really had a chance to listen to much of the first one. The song I Telescope I love the most is, well, I love them all actually
I have both of those albums as well. You should listen to Drastic Fantastic, it’s quite good.
Does anybody listen to music that’s in another language? I do!
Enya- sometimes in celtic
Bering Strait- Russian folk song on their one album
Julietta Venegas- fun Mexican pop music
I like the Spanish artist Juanes. He’s awesome, and my favorite song by him is probably “La Camisa Negra”.
Hebrew.
422.1.1- There’s nothing inherently wrong with rap. There’s a lot of good, non-obscene rap out there, and I don’t want all rap being stereotyped as inappropriate just because that seems to be what’s popular.
424- All the time, yeah. Mostly various Latin genres, J-pop, and J-rock.
I wasn’t saying all rap is bad, but yes all the popular stuff is so obscene it’s ridiculous… yuck… but there’s this song by REM on their album Around the Sun, the Outsiders, that is half rap, and it’s POLITICAL based. I love it My biggest problem with rap is that it doesn’t have much of a melody. It’s mostly just rhythm and a beat…
I like Linkin Park because they have an AMAZING rapper, and an AMAZING singer. They are a great blend of rock and rap. Go Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington!! (forgive me if I spelled a name wrong)
ooh which bands? (jrock and jpop)
I had no idea! oh wow I am really excited to hear that!
Well, I don’t have much, but I’d say Do As Infinity is my favorite. I also have a few songs by Ayumi Hamasaki, those are good. I have one song by Nanase Aikawa that’s really good… wow, I’m just realizing how little music of those genres I have. *is pathetic* Well, I’ve got over a hundred bucks in spending money, I’ll have to buy some more. *scrolls through iTunes some more* Oh, I have a song by dream, that one’s really good…
omg ayu ♥
Did you know she’s mostly deaf in her left ear? She works so hard!. I don’t follow her that much but I do like some of her songs. A few years I had Memorial Address (the song, not the album) on repeat forever lol
As for the others, I’m somewhat familiar with Do As Infinity, but I haven’t heard much of Nanase Aikawa’s or dream’s work.
itunes has really improved with the japanese music available! some of my favorite artists have much more available now. I think Miyavi has most of his discography up, Gackt has a lot too, L’Arc~en~Ciel and so on.
Some rap is good, I agree. But I find that a lot of the rap that some kids at school listen to is really bad. There’s so much of artists calling girls (and boys) mean, nasty names and other extremely inappropriate topics. It amazes me that the kids who listen to it get it by their parents.
I used to listen to a lot of rap. It got boring after a while.
The whole idea with the obscenity and why that’s “popular” isn’t that it’s obscene (yeah I wish it wasn’t) but it has a good beat, and it’s catchy. I have a lot of the Ying Yang Twins, and they’re sexist. To both sexes. And disgusting. I don’t listen to the words, I just enjoyed the way the music flows.
I actually haven’t listened to any of my rap for like, a year now. I enjoy music that has a bit more depth. But you see my point?
Re: Parents- Do YOUR parents look through your iTunes library? If mine did, I’d be dead. I have all sorts of crazy stuff in there. Like the Sex Ed. Song. Which is awesome.
But anyway, its really not that hard to sneak whatever music you want to listen to past your parents.
Yes, my parents do look through my iTunes library. Actually, they give me most of my music. Thinking about it, the only music in my iTunes library that my parents didn’t give me is old band/chorus music, recordings of myself for school projects, and stuff I need to listen to or transcribe for piano.
Like I said before, some rap is good. I mean, the beat is (obviously) pretty catchy on some songs, and if you just ignore the words like you pointed out, even the bad songs can be good.
Parents: Mine do check through my iTunes library, actually. Not like every second, but they do occasionally. Thankfully, they’re pretty lenient about the stuff I listen to-as long as there isn’t any obvious bad stuff in the song, I’m OK. For example, there are a bunch of songs that have cuss words in them on my iPod, but they’re all pretty discreet. I mean, you wouldn’t know they were there unless you were listening for them. (And then there are the more obvious cuss words, but I just tell my parents that I “beep” them out in my head, and somehow they managed to believe me…a miracle) And we agreed that they wouldn’t take anything out of my iPod unless they talked to me first about it, which has been helpful. They’ve done that a few times, but I’ve always managed to convince them that the song is actually OK and age appropriate for me, blah, blah, blah. (Another miracle I will never understand) *Decides to end lecture and wanders to a different thread…*
I love
Paramore
Beatles
Kings of Leon
DeVotchKa
Vampire Weekend
The Killers
The Clash
etc………
In response to 424– I listen to a moderate amount of japanese music. I can list some of the bands I like if you want but you might not want to hear me prattle on for paragraphs as I likely will if you do.
I’d love recommendations for other foreign language music that anyone has!
speaking of which here I am at one in the morning listening to some cpop I haven’t listened to in three years. Anyone familiar with Fahrenheit? Anyone? Bueller?
Have you ever heard of SMAP? It’s a Japanese band I like. They’re pretty popular in Japan. My favourite in the group is Goro!
ahh yes SMAP. We had some Japanese students visit us a few years ago at high school, and I asked what kind of music one of the girls liked..she had a poster and I was like “Oh, SMAP!” lol
I haven’t actually heard much of their music though! Their popularity is why I know of them, heh
I’m not as much of a Johnny’s Entertainment fan as I once was, though I do still enjoy listening to NEWS when I want to get pumped up for something.
Freebird, free-bird!
We got-a powa, you gota powa, i gota powa!
haha! *is a SMAP fan*
Well, like I said in previous post, julietta venegas is amazing, if you don’t mind spanish. I had a friend who speaks fluent spanish translate some of it and it’s the normal i love you do you love me nonsense, but her instrumentation is kind of insane. I watched this concert of hers and she had a musical saw, a tuba, mallets, horns, everything!!!! It was sooo cool. It really is FUN music, really upbeat and happy sounding, but some are mellow, etc.
I’ve been digging “soy un caballo” lately. It’s primarily a Belgian couple (plus some guest artists), who sing in French. The music is pretty chill, and has a “foreign” sound that I really like.
OK, I had this amazing experience last night while watching a concert of The Silk-Road Ensemble with Yo-yo ma. OMG it was amazing. It gave me such vivid imagery! The songs were native music of countries along the silk road and there were these two songs in particular where these two people from, oh, I think it was Azerbejan (pardon the spelling) and one was called “Blind Arab” or something and the other was a minstrel song, and you could just see the story they were telling without understanding a word. It was sooooooo cool.
Yo-Yo-Ma is AWESOME, isnt he! He was in Nashville last year, and I got to see him! (my parents are music-obsessive, even with the 1-2 hr drive)
429~ I got to see Yo-Yo Ma at the Smithsonian Folklife festival several years back when he was playing with the Silk Road ensemble. Amazing. I’ll never forget it, I was sitting in the front and he winked in my general direction.
Fiddler, I am convinced you are living my ideal life. Colonial Williamsburg, the Smithsonian, and now Yo-Yo Ma? It’s all highly suspect…
Also…Is it bad that I thought of the episode of Arthur featuring Yo-Yo Ma as a rabbit? That so cool you (and everyone else) got to see him! He must come to LA every so often…will have to try to convince mother to take me.
Has anyone else seen Itzhak Perlman perform? Spectacular. He’s coming back to, erm, my general area this fall, and my family will probably buy tickets again.
Yeah, I’ve seen Perlman! I’ve actually got his autograph, as we know some people in the orchestra!
I watched a concert of the Indigo girls last night and it was…. different. It’s not that their music’s bad, but it’s really politically active, which also isn’t bad, just sorta awkward. There was this one song where one of the singers had these five little kids come out on stage and sing “This Little Light of Mine” and they looked so scared. I felt bad for them. Also, I couldn’t really understand the lyrics on most of their songs except the obscenities, which annoyed me…
Did anybody hear the thing about being able to mash any song with the background of “Viva la Vida” and it’ll come out good? Somebody did a mashup of the 2008 top 25 pop songs to Viva la Vida and it worked out really nicely. I don’t think I should post a link, but you can google it. I know most of you don’t listen to mainstream radio, but you should recognize a few…
I listened to it, and wow. It really does sound good.
So the Strokes are pretty boring. Except Reptilia, that’s a sweet song. Thankfully we still have the Killers.
We’ve finally fixed our turntable, which means that I can listen to the records which have become incredibly interesting since I last looked at them four or five years ago. We have a Steeleye Span record, and -counts- five Donovan albums which I haven’t heard ever/in a really long time, and some various other stuff which I haven’t ever listening to or heard of, but which looks interesting anyway.
435-A turntable, nice.
*Acting much too lazy to scroll ALL the way back to find post* – La musica de Espana is pretty cool…..I had this spanish class where the teacher handed out CDs that we had to take listening quizes on…at first I listened to them just to get a good grade on the quiz, but then I actually began to like the music, and now am intrested in the Latin music scene
– my teach LOVED La Oreja de Van Gogh so I have practically a whole CD of their songs. I personally prefer Los Hollywood and anything I can get on a Putumayo CD.
I also enjoy:
Lily Allen
KT Tunstall
Martha Wainwright
Feist
The Beatles (who dosen’t?)
Ra Ra Riot (whom I get to go see this summer)
Vampire Weekend
Sheryl Crow
Anyone free from iTunes
And an assortment of other seemingly random artists
Yes, my parents do scroll through my library, but anything they delete I can resurect from the trash can *wink*
436: Your parents censor your music? My mom once tried to complain about my White Zombie album “La Sexorcisto” when I was 14. I explained to her that even though it may be vulgar, it’s still art, produced by years of hard work from great musicians, and that cultural elitism against heavy metal is never going to work because apart from classical music and some jazz, it’s highest up on the “art” hierarchy.
My parents complain if I don’t let them know what’s going to come into the house before I get it, I run everything past my dad, and he buys most of my music, and even through all that, we still have thousands of CDs in the house and I personally own over fifty. It is possible to work with parents about music
I love KT Tunstall (i mentioned that earlier), Feist, the Beatles, and Sheryl Crow (particularly “Always on Your Side”)
Meh, as a musician myself I find any sort of musical censorship to be an abomination.
Ha. Wish my parents listen like yours did.
Try this article from the New York Times. It gave my parents (both piano teachers, and my dad has a phd in Philosophy of Music from Oxford) the seeds of newfound respect for the genre.

Anybody heard Linkin Park’s new song “New Divide”? It is AWESOME.
“Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies/across this new divide”
Once I figured out that every single Linkin Park song was exactly the same, I stopped listening to them. Honestly, every single song in Meteora is a duplicate idea of the next one. There’s nothing new or original. It gets really boring.
Does anyone know about Songs To Wear Pants To?
Uurgh.
Disney channel has ruined music.
The reason there will no longer be any big bands (I mean big bands, like the Beatles, or Led Zeppelin) is because of Disney Channel. The 3 steps to becoming a famous band/singer nowadays?
Step 1: Go to Disney Channel headquarters, and propose a show to them, with you as the main actor. Don’t worry, no matter how bad the show is or how bad an actor you are, the show will be aired. (I know this.My sister watches Disney Channel. Have you seen the new show, “Jonas”?
Step 2: Once you are on T.V, Disney Channel will not rest until they have turned all their actors into singers, and all their singers into actors. Once again, it does not matter how bad you are. (Like I said, “Jonas”, anyone?)
Step 3: Wait. Only 2 steps? This is worse than I thought! I swear I had 3 before…
Therefor, there are so many cakey “bands” hanging around, there will never again be a BIG one, because becoming a band/singer is so easy. Disney Channel has ruined music.
Nah, Disney Channel only ruins music for people naive enough to look to Disney Channel for music. There will always be crap to sift through to find the good stuff. The main reason there won’t be any more big bands like the Beatles or Led Zeppelin is that it is no longer possible to create revolutionary music that still appeals to the masses’ tastes. The Beatles were catchy and revolutionary, so they became huge. Same for the Sex Pistols, although on a smaller scale. The new “revolutionary” bands are so far removed from average musical taste that they will never become popular.
TMBG is somewhat revolutionary, and they’re, well not “Mainstream”, but almost everyone has heard them somewhere.
Revolutionary how? Are they pushing the boundaries of compositional parameters or are they just fooling around on their instruments?
The best example I could think of for a creative band that doesn’t stick to formulaic money making right now is System of a Down. Then of course there were all those weird bands in Britain in the 90s. Like what the hell were Blur playing??
Have you Heard Minimum Wage?
Nothing potentially revolutionary, just a cute hybrid.
Ahh, Sudo, my friend, it is all about marketing.
That being said, EIGHT YEAR OLDS ARE WEARING ZAC EFRON SOCKS!!! NOOOO!!!
Pixar is amazing, but Disney Channel is bleghbleghblegh.
After I’ve listened to the Jonas Brothers a few times, I might actually listen to them if they weren’t on pillowcases and so annoying.. They’re kinda good, I guess.
My cousin’s staying over here and I have to “bond” with her by watching Disney Channel with her. There is going to be a new Jonas episode in which Joe falls for a girl in the orchestra (I think she plays bass) but the girl “doesn’t date rock stars.” (Smart girl.) So now “Joe will do ANYTHING to chnage her mind!” He joins the band and so do Kevin and Nick.
What REALLY horrified me was when Kevin tries a trombone and he tries a glissando and the slide flies off with the force he did it with AND PUNCTURES A DRUM!!!
If I ever find those writers…
Anyone who wears a chastity ring isn’t allowed to call themselves “rock” musicians. That’s just wrong.
Well, one of them is now engaged… ((No, I don’t follow the Jonas Brothers, I saw it on Yahoo!))
The scariest thing of all is the fact that the moms bringing their eight year-olds to concerts are actual fans themselves!
One of my friend’s mom once said, quote,”Joe is hot.”
! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Well, on Monday my first reviews will be published. Classic status for Death SS’s “Heavy Demons” and 75/100 for Joe Perry’s “Joe Perry”.
In other news, Silverchair are pretty damn good.
