  2. Same as Zallie. But . . . I think there might be a bit of inaccuracy having to do with getting conditioned to those being the same key first.

I always have trouble with the forms because when It says political views it never has an option for “I’d probably be an anarchist if I wasn’t such a pessimist.”

  4. Should I attempt to translate my own post?

1st part: I got the same result as Zallie. Because I got used to Male and Science being on the same side, I think that messed me up when it switched. The system is imperfect.

2nd part: Filling out online forms that ask for my political view is annoying because it doesn’t really fall on the liberal to conservative spectrum.

It’s late. I’m incoherent. I’m putting off my Dante paper. And my concept play about Prince Charming. Don’t mind me too much.

  5. It seems to me that, because “black” and “bad” both start with the letter “b,” while taking the test it is easier to remember when these two are together than when “black” is with “good.” This would give “Black or Bad” a shorter time than “Black or Good,” even if you aren’t prejudiced, therefore throwing off the results of the test.

    More later (maybe…)

  6. I have
    1. black and white: no preference
    2. gay and straight: slight preference for gay people
    3. fat and thin: slight preference for thin people
    4. women and men (liberal vs. science): slight association of women with science
    5. Bush and Kennedy: strong preference for Kennedy
I think the women and men one was because my mom’s a chemistry teacher, and when I see the word mother, than chemistry, I put them on the same side.

  9. I took three!!! It was SO cool, (that’s why I took three)

    Ahem–I have:
    1. (1) [1] {1} Little to no automatic preference between Black and White Americans
    2. (10) [2] {2} A moderate automatic preference of Other Religions over Judaeism (How the heck do you spell that??)
    3. (11) [3] {3} A slight automatic preference of Asian Americans as American and European Americans as being Foreign as opposed to European Americans as American and Asian Americans as Foreign (Which means that I think that Asian Americans are more American than European Americans). I am not Asian American I am a European American mutt (which means that my Europeanness is very mixed among nationalities, but is predominantly English) (just to make sure [so for most European Americans, this is a very weird result]). I’m just freakishly obbsessed w/ Japan.

Me: (these are phonetic equivalents [sort of] of Japanese characters) Ohayo!!
    Person: ???
    Me: Ogenki desu ka?
    Person: ???
    Me: OGENKI DESU KA!!!
    Person: ???
Me: *throws hands in air and drops books, looks around embarassed and picks up books, then walks away in disgust*

    Later

    Me: Ore wa otaku gozen!!!
Friend (and similarly obssessed one): Ore wa otaku gozen!!!
    Me: Ohayo!
    Friend: Ohayo!
    Me: Ogenki desu ka?
    Friend: Hai! Ogenki desu ka?
Me: Hai! Otaku wa doko desu ka?
Both: Ore wa otaku gozen!!! *laughs uproariously*

Bonus points to anyone who can figure out what we mean, if I’m phoneticizing this with the right number of repeated letters, what time it is, and whether me and my friend think that ‘otaku’ is a good or bad thing!

    Good luck

I showed a slight automatic preference for Lincoln over Bush, which really surprised me because I really hate Bush. Weird.

  19. This is what the test said when I took the racial one.

Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for European American compared to African American.

I feel really bad about it now. I try to act equally and I’m pretty sure I do; I have Hispanic as well as European friends. I don’t really know many black people but try to be as nice to them as I am to European Americans. Unless, of course, they’re total jerks. Then I treat them as I treat any jerks: with contempt and masked insults. I really do feel sorry for total jerks though, sometimes. Their lives are so pointless and shallow that they have to sink to jerkiness to feel fulfilled.

    Regular numbering and binary. {Although i don’t know what was up with the fancy brackets.}

  20. There were a few of the tests that I felt I wouldn’t be good at because I don’t know much about a certain topic. Example: some of the tests want me to recognize places associated with different cultures. Except for the things I’ve done in Social Studies, I don’t know much about places in other countries.

  25. Mr. /Mrs. Kricket, you are supposed to go to the demonstion button, and than from there you will see, I hope, what to do.
I only took the Race test, (sorry Mr. Coontze, but I’m writing this before school and I’m running out of time,) and I got a result that said I have a slight preference towards Whites. Now, I’d like to say it’s wrong, but being white myself, I presume it is right. Not that I don’t like blacks, but but not getting this result is like liking a freind better than yourself. Remember, it said slight.

  26. I should add that nobody is sure what these tests mean. Getting a particular result doesn’t necessarily show that you’re a bad person or that you treat people differently in real life. Maybe we can get an expert on the blog to explain what the scores do (or might) mean.

  40. Your data suggest a moderate association of Asian American with American and European American with Foreign compared to European American with American and Asian American with Foreign.

Okay, there were a few problems with this test. One was that I’m horrible at landmarks; I kept putting the curvy thingy as foreign and the stick thingy as foreign and the first time I put stonehenge as American, and I know it’s in Scotland or somewhere around there, but I had kind of gotten into a rut.. I also couldn’t figure out whether some of the people were caucasian or asian.. I kept hitting the wrong side for one guy in particular. what would really not be fair would be putting pictures of people like me on there (I’m half asian) and then asking us to sort them. I don’t really look that asian (light skin, green eyes, brown hair), but I’ve had people identify me (correctly) as Japanese before.

If we are not personally prejudiced, but we get prejudiced answers, then is there someone else to blame? Society? TV? Early life experiences?

In the spirit of the bias committee, I say that the Muse cover designer staff is prejudiced. A flesh-colored crayon with a medium-light color was made to stand out from the other, darker and lighter crayons, thereby presenting the subconscious image that people with that color of skin are BETTER!

I really don’t think black people are drug-loving gangsters who willl rob you when you turn your back, but I don’t believe either that whites are goody-goody great people!
The test made me feel like racial meanie-person who calls people “niggers” and other unmentionable words that might get me in trouble. The IAT is made to make people racial paranoid, and now I feel like if I don’t watch it, I’ll start calling people things that my good concious mind doesn’t agree with, but makes my absolutley eville subconcious self laugh evilly.
It was so hard to match up white with bad! It made me feel terrible. And then I took the one on gay/straight people, I don’t even want to discuss those results. I’ll just say I don’t really like gays. . .

I gave up on one test, I just kept on making too many @*#! mistakes, I couldn’t #@*&!@ tell them apart ARGH! One I just thought was stupid. One I didn’t get at all. And the other, I was kind of afraid to see what my results would be, so I skipped it), I’ve chosen to post about one of the results I got, and have chosen the test that started it all in Muse: Race.

Results: Your data suggests a moderate automatic preferance for European-Americans to African-Americans.

To tell the truth…I don’t think I was anywhere near as surprised or horrified by finding out that I’m moderately prejudiced against black people as one would expect. In fact, I wasn’t surprised at all.

    HOWEVER.

In saying that, I do not mean that I or any of my friends or relatives is racist. I do not mean that I consciously prefer white people to black. I just mean that, I’m not surprised, I was almost expecting it.

So, why, oh why, was I not shocked to discover my racism? Let me explain. It’s not that I have anything against black people–it’s just that I don’t come into much contact with them. There are 220 people in my class. A -VERY small- majority is Asian, then Caucasian, then Hispanic/Latino, then Arab-American, then others races (e.g.: Native American)…by far, though, the minority is African-Americans. Out of all 220, I only know of 5 African-Americans–and this includes people who are visibly part African-American, if not completely–this includes anyone who clearly has African-American ancestry. And those 5 people…out of all of them, I only come into regular contact with 2, and I’m not particularly closer friends with any of them–NOT because of their race, but because I just don’t get along with them as well as I get along with others. I’m quite mixed, and since some of my family has been in America since well before the American Revolution, we can’t quite be sure, but, THAT I KNOW OF, I have no African-American ancestry–and there are no African-Americans in my family. I don’t know very many of the other people in my neighborhood, generally I don’t come into contact much with people other than my classmates and my family, so…I just don’t have much contact with African-Americans. Thus…I’m just not quite as familiar with them as I am with people of other races. So…finding out that I prefer whites to blacks was no great shock.

Even though I am pretty liberal and extremely opposed to racism, I’ve always kind of suspected that I have some slight subconscious racial prejudices. For example…if I can’t find a place and I need to ask for directions, and I see a white woman and a black woman, I will almost always walk up to the white woman first, unless there is something else about the black woman (e.g.: she has a child with her, she is a police officer, etc.) that makes me deem her more trustworthy than the white woman. On a bus or train, I’m more likely to sit down near a white person than a black. If I’m staring at someone on a bus or a train or the street, more often than white, the person is black–and I look away much more quickly when s/he catches me looking at him/her if the s/he is black.

I don’t look at European-Americans as better than African-Americans. I don’t think that all blacks are violent, trash-talking, drug-loving gangsters or that all whites are honest, good, well-meaning civilians. I’m just not as familiar with black people as I am with white, as I scarcely ever come into contact with blacks–and everything in the media doesn’t help, either, but that’s another story.

Myself? I’m an international mutt. I have European, Asian, Hispanic, and American Indian ancestry–I always say I’m Caucasian, since I look more Caucasian than anything. So, I guess I’m white. And…consciously, I have no problem with blacks whatsoever, and I’m against racism and any other form of discrimination.

Still…I can’t say I found the results to be a complete shock.

It’s an interesting test, at any rate. And, even though you said it yourselves, there’s no way we can really be sure just how accurate it is…I, for one, actually think it makes sense. And find it pretty believable.

    My opinion.

  51. Excuse me, shadow049, but what the heck are you talking about. And also, sorry kricket, I guess I wasn’t thinking. It was a wednsday…three tests, though I admit I really wasn’t thinking about them, and it was *8:28*, not 9:28, like it said. Just don’t feel offended.
I took a different test after reading all these comments about all the different tests. I took the one on elderly people vs. young people, and it said that I like older people a bit better. I concurr ( It’s vocab word. Maybe I can show this to my Language arts teacher and she’ll give me extra credit points). I always enjoyed sitting around and listening to stories, rather than playing with other kids.
However, again, I am mad at the test. The stupid snapshots of the people were so close, sometimes it was impossible to tell young from old, and then the red ex would flash, and then I would panick, thinking that “that was the last error that the test would allow,” and then I would make another mistake, and then my dad was telling me to get off the com;uter because we had to go somewhere, and then, and then , and then…it was over.

  59. dang! the race one was hard! It said “Your data suggest a strong automatic preference for White compared to Black.” According to this, a day in my life looks like this: (I wish not to offend anyone)

I walk up to a black guy. This white guy comes up as well.
    White guy: “Hey”
    Black guy:”Hello”
me: “Hey white guy. Black guy, buzz off!”
    Black guy: “HEY!!!!!”
White guy:”Come on, black guy, It’s his subconscius speaking”
Black guy: strows punch at white guy
Black guy and white guy end up fighting over my subconcius.

Yet another day ruined by my subconscius…
I hope that doesn’t happen to me, as I attempt to not do this. I try to be racially acceptive, yet my suboconscius tells me otherwise. Maybe this is because I grew up in an all-white neighborhood with me and this other kid I didn’t know. Basically, all my time was spent at my grandparents. When I entered public school that I became aware of other races other than mine. It just seems wrong, yet I can explain why. I’d go into more detail, yet I’m taking just a few minutes to say my opinion. (“GO MILTON RUPINEES!!!”)

This is saying that we are prejudiced against each other naturally! According to the tests, no matter hard we try, we somehow laugh at people we don’t try to laugh at, EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who cares if I subconsciusly think that guy on the street is not as good as that other guy? It’s what I consciencsly do that counts, right?

Well, I have nothing to say to this considering I grew up near NYC, and…

And then in light of above the above, I took the Asian-American test. (I had actually read comment 11 last night, and felt extremely empowered to look more at my Japanese grammar book, read manga, and sleep in my Japanese pajamas (yes, authentically Japanese!)) I then scored:

Your data suggest little or no association between European American and Asian American with American and Foreign.

  82. Alright, i’m back. i just took the racial preference test and figured out the truth. those tests aren’t based on how you complete them, but by completly confusing and scaring the testees. with the categories combined and switched around, you get confuzled (yes, that’s a real word) and messy, and you start to put things in the wrong places. then, they assign you a random bias using what you put down in the survey portion of the test, mixed with your confuzled mistakes during the timed portion. I was assigned a “non-preferenced” person, but that was because I kept accidentally putting the “bad” words in the white area, and the “good” words in the black area. I don’t know How You mail a blog with your full name and address, but I really hope this blog will get into the magazine. I must let my findings be known!!!

  84. My results rather surprised me.

    1. Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for African American compared to European American.

Probably since I’m currently taking AP United States history. I’m a little fed up with some of the white men in our past:
The Grant Administration (considered most corrupt administration up to that time, ironic considering he was supposedly “Reconstructing” the South).
The Harding Administration (Harding was an incompetent politician nominated by fellow powerful industrial Republicans for the presidentcy because they knew they could control him).
John Pierpont Morgan, started his fortune by buying disfunctional rifles at $3 each before the Civil War, then selling them to the Union army for $22 each, where they frequently blew up in use, and killed a fair number of soldiers.
Andrew Carnegie who stated that the rich should give back to the community in his The Gospel of Wealth, while he continued to exploit workers and pay them barely living wages.
The Emancipation Proclamation–The celebrated Emancipation Proclamation actually didn’t do that much when first signed by Lincoln, it said all slaves in Confederate territories were now free. He did not want to offend the border states sticking with the Union (such as Kentucky) by taking away their precious slaves, but wanted to appease Northern radicals. He had no jurisdiction over the Confederate States of America so it was only effective until the Union started gaining control over Confederate land, it’s like passing a law saying smoking is illegal in Canada.

The only thing so far the only black that bugs me in United States history is Booker T. Washington who told blacks that education was more important than political rights. Basically telling blacks to shut up, sit down, and attend college to obtain an education they couldn’t use because there was no job market at that time for educated blacks (this was late 1800s).

    2. Your data suggest a moderate automatic preference for Gay People compared to Straight People.

I find this funny, because I am so oblivious I never realise people are gay (it never even comes to mind) unless someone explicitly tells me. It’s not that it bothers me, it’s just not something I think about.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  85. I say the whole Gender-science IAT was done by a bunch of conservative-religious types. You know how they kept asking you all those gender words? What they’re really trying to see is if you had any trouble matching the males and the females with peoples of their own gender. The science words were just to trick you into taking the test. You would think they would do that with the Gay-Straight IAT, but that’s way too obvious. If you had no trouble putting people of the same sex together, they send you a load of religious propaganda. That’s why they asked for your mailing adress. But I was too smart for them, I didn’t give mine.

    Pie 0

  86. Well it has to be implicit, doesn’t it? You can’t do it slowly, because then you’re thinking about it! The point isn’t to find out if you’re racist, the point is to study the instinctive prejudice.

  87. Here’s some interesting thing about me:

    1. I have a strong automatic association of Natives with Foreign and Whites with American.

    2. I have a moderate automatic preference for whites over blacks.

    3. I have a slight automatic preference for dark skin compared to light skin.

    4. I am a light skinned boy who has a completly white family.

    5. I love and have been going out with a girl who has darker skin. She has a Native American mother and a white father.

    Who says this is strange?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  88. This test has some major flaws. For example, one of the ones I took was the one that came up first (apparently the list is random and has different tests each time you revisit it), which was the “Asian vs. White/American vs. Foreign” one. (For all and sundry’s information, I ended up with “little or no preference”, which would be predictable if this test made any sense, because I have a lot of Asian friends. Also for all and sundry’s information, I’m half Eastern European Jewish and the other side of my family consists of various European nationalities– English, Scottish, French, &c. I live and always have lived in New York State, so the fact that I use British spelling has nothing to do with my education or anything; I just think it’s really cool. But enough parenthetical digression.)

First of all, the pictures were really weird. I really had to look carefully to see which they *wanted* me to say, since they weren’t pictures of real people. I suppose you’re supposed to tell by the eyes or something like that, which is *capitalising* on stereotypes (you have to follow a stereotyping instinct to be fast, which I think defeats the whole purpose). It reminded me of that weird theory about how Africans were the first people to discover America, because some ancient statues found somewhere in South America had “African” features (they weren’t in colour, obviously, since they were statues; it’s based on facial shape). What are “African features”? The people who came up with this theory that makes Africans (and their descendents by association, they apparently think) look good seem to think that all Africans look the same. Just walking around town and observing people will quickly tell you otherwise.

In addition, most of the “foreign” locations on the aforementioned (and still being discussed) test were in Europe or Australia, so it would be logical to put them on the same side as the “European-looking” people (if they actually did look one way or the other, which most of them don’t) and to put the American locations (some of which I didn’t recognise at first, not having been to a lot of them) with both.

That was the test I had the strongest feelings of “this is silly” toward, but I also had a bit of trouble with the questionnaires. They asked questions like “Do you like Asians?” and “Do you like Muslims?” and stuff, which are hard to answer objectively. I have a lot of Asian friends, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I like “Asians” as a group, or dislike the whole group. Saying that you like a group in general means that you think of its members as members of that group, instead of individuals. They also asked political questions, like about the Patriot Act on the Arab/Muslim/everything else test. Being racist or not generally doesn’t go along party lines.

The Diane Ravitch article was awesome. I read her book a while ago and it really makes one wonder what education is coming to.

    P. S. I’m taking AP US too, and we read W.E.B. DuBois’ criticism of Booker T. Washington. He said that if people followed Washington’s advice, African-Americans would never get anywhere because the white Southern Democrats would be happy if blacks stayed where they were and they would just be giving up civil rights. Advice like Booker T. Washington’s worked fine for some groups, but not for African-Americans in the U.S. at that time, because of the specific history of African-Americans in the U.S.

  92. I know that’s what you’re supposed to do (not think), but it’s really hard. I was freaking out on just about every test. I mean, they have the “black or good” group and I can’t think of it. I’m going too slow and thinking that I can’t think of black people as good, that I might be hardwired to hate them. This, as you might guess, is not improving my testing time any more. Then, they have “white or good,” and I’m still having trouble being fast, and making even more mistakes. I start thinking that maybe my subconscious is evil and wants to cheat the system and make me look perfect. Paranoia sets in rather quickly thereafter. The mind, my friends, is a dark and scary place – and what makes it worse is that I live there.

  95. I took a bunch of these and found that my reactions were quite atypical. I prefer dark-skinned people to light-skinned people, have no preference between Caucasian and African American, moderately prefer fat people to thin people, slightly prefer old people to young people.

But I’m not really convinced these tests are really testing anything. For example, one of the faces they flash for the dark-skinned people/light-skinned people test looks like my friend Shanti. Whenever I saw it, I got a smile on my face. So maybe I don’t really prefer dark-skinned people to light-skinned people, I just prefer Shanti to most people.

The gay/straight test seemed particularly silly. When I took it, they showed things like pairs of stick-figure girls in triangular skirts, like the image you see on the door to the women’s bathroom. I think I probably associate that image more strongly with the “Slow–Children Playing” street sign than with homosexuality.

  104. Well, I took the test a few times for different subjects, and I have to say, it totally rules. Why, you ask?

Because it told me I wasn’t biased against black people, thought of Jews and Muslims equally, and, most importantly, that *drumroll* …………….. ” [My] data suggest a moderate automatic identification with Beautiful People compared to Rich People.” Which means I must be beautiful. Ohhh!! Whaaaaaaaaaaattt!?!?! You want a fork?! Cause you just got served, fool!!

On a more serious note, I took the IAT before reading the article, and so it was a little surprising to find not only that 80% of test-takers had a pro-white bias, but that this was true even for black people—I’m just about as white as they come. A possible explanation I have for my result is the fact that I live and grew up in [Name of city deleted by Administrator to protect Kat’s privacy] Oregon, which, if you don’t know, is crawling with hippies. (not that that’s a bad thing—it’s really quite nice—they make delicious raspberry lemonade) The effect of this is a generally liberal trend, and the public schools teach us about all kinds of stuff I’m told you don’t get in a lot of places, from MLK, Jr, to Sitting Bull, to labor movements, to Malcolm X, to Chinese railroad workers, to Cesar Chavez, and so on. I do wonder, therefore, if there really is something to the idea of cultural impact on our subconscious bias or nonbias towards certain groups.

I guess the next step would be to get other students from my school to take it and see what their results look like.

Oh, and when I said “this test totally rules” at the beginning, I was really just joking, or trying to get your attention, or something………. I find its accuracy slightly dubious, but it’s an interesting problem nonetheless.

  105. A couple more things:

    1. kokopelli #13, the test isn’t supposed to be Christian, nor is it supposed to be Hindu, Sikh, or Wiccan. It’s intended as a scientific study, whether you think its results are meaningless or not.

    2. I’m curious about how many people read the article BEFORE taking the test. It could be that after reading about the black gentleman who the test claimed was biased against himself, some of you white folks who got weird results were extra careful when associating “African American” with “bad”.

    3. I would like to thank Muse for publishing a serious article for once. Not that humor is bad; I’ve been reading Muse for a good six years now, and it’s been pretty hilarious the whole time, but it’s great to see a kid’s magazine talking about real issues. They have liberal views on almost everything, come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and are often active as, err, activists. There are so many different types of people one could class as hippies these days that it’s hard to define… If I had to make a blanket definition, it’s somebody who lives an alternative, left-of-center lifestyle and generally rejects the social norm of living a “straight” life.

Ahlan wa sahlan is an old Bedouin greeting. (The Bedouin were and are nomadic Arabs who dwell in the desert.) It’s a short way of saying “you are among your own people and on a level place out in the open where you can see enemies coming a long way away,” i.e., you’re safe. It gives an idea of how dangerous life could be out there.

By the way, if you want to pronounce it, the first “a” in each word is short, as in “Al.” In fact, “ahlan” is pronounced just like “Allen” except that you pronounce the “h” as an “h.” “Sahlan” rhymes with it. (We don’t pronounce h in the middle of a word, but Arabs do.)

  117. After reading through muse for good amount of time I decided I should try out some of these implicit tests so I went to the site to see if it was REALLY THAT amazing. I tried 2 and then realized I NEEDED to rant. Ahem! This test is so stupid, so entirely and utterly illogical it makes me want to rip open my pc and become the hulk. The reason the test makes you feel biast is becuase its a game not becuase of any real 2nd nature feelings. You have to press e and i alot and so you first get used to one side, so when the “test” switches about the categories your brain has to re-adjust to the new settings. Its a a simple brain trick (like th color words that have a differant color text(blue in purple text)), not a hidden biast againsit blacks or liberal arts and females. The results are just putting stupid answers to how fast your brain can re-adjust and re-process different things. If I had more time to research about the brain I would but I am WAY to busy with other classes. Oh and if you think I am just pulling this out of thin air… I have actually studied the brain before in moderate detail.

    1) the test is sucessful because it’s confusing, it makes it so you can’t consciously or subconsciously screen your responses. If you have a slight preference for one way of thinking, it will show best in the way you respond when confused.

-little to no automatic preference between Straight People and Gay People (yeah, I think this is definitely true; i grew up with gay neighbors, and so i’ve known 2 men living together even before i really understood the concept of being gay)

-slight association of European American with American and Asian American with Foreign compared to Asian American with American and European American with Foreign (I thought my result might say neutral, because I’m half-European (Austrian, Polish, and German), and half-Asian (Japanese), but I’m not surprised with these results)

-a slight automatic preference for White American compared to Black American. (hate to say it, but probably true)

-slight automatic preference for Disabled Persons compared to Abled Persons (yeah, I kind of feel bad for disabled people, but I don’t really like to, because the dieabled people I know don’t like being treated specially)

-moderate automatic preference for Young compared to Old (yeah, I don’t really like old people)

This idiotic test insisted that I had a strong preference for Whites over Blacks!!!!!!!!!!!
But you know what’s realy sick? I think it might be correct. I think that I might have some sort of prejudice against african-american people. I don’t mean too, indeed, I always treat them exactly the same as I would a white person in my consious actions. But the other night, I was in the Library, and it was late (fifteen mins. till closing), no one else was around. That was untill a black man stepped around the corner into the aisle I was on. Almost immediatly my heart sped up, and I started getting scared. No one’s around to hear my scream. That’s what kept running through my head. That and everything I had ever heard on the news about child-molesters.
After a moment I had to leave without getting my book. When I got out of the Library, I inwardly slapped myself for being so rediculous. I was, and still am, heartily confused by my reaction. Would I have acted the same way about a white man? I don’t know, but for some reason, I doubt it. Taking this test seemed to prove it. I’m prejudiced. I’m certainly not a skinhead, but I am prejudiced. And I don’t think that I’m the only one.
I hope that one day, people won’t be prejudiced against any group of people. Because you can spit us up as much as you want, but we’re all people. We all bleed red. We all laugh. We all feel the same things. And sure, there are alot of black thugs out there, but there are just as many white thugs.
And no, I don’t think that whites should have to ‘pay for what their ansestors did to the blacks’. The Irish have been stomped on all throughout history, but we don’t whine about it. I think that everyone, wether they be white, black, hispanic, asian, or pink and yellow polka-dotted, should be held to the same standard. A standard that values loyalty, nobility, honor, hard work, and justice. I think that it’s time America stood up and took advantage of the freedoms we have won. They go around in gangs drawing graffti on the walls, and smoking pot. And every time I see one of these morons, I wonder if they know what they’re throwing away. We Americans have a gift. We can learn. We can grow. Why should we wast our lives doing idiotic things and wasting that gift? Why should we wast our freedom of free thought, by believeing in some stupid steriotype? Did you know, that in South Africa blacks still don’t have equall rights? Or that in India, a woman has to ask her husband permission to leave the house? Or that, in some Russian places, homosexual people have to get registered, like some kind of pervert? All of this sounds absurd to me.
And yet, I seem to pefer whites over blacks. Why? I have no clue. But I intend to use the freedom that America has given me, (an almost pureblood Irishman, born in Afghanastan, but an American at heart) to learn to see past outer diferences. Tonight, I make a promise. In six months time I will take the IAT again. And when I do, I will have no predjudices agaist black, or white, people. I swear to God I won’t.

  152. The problem with these is that once know what the test is about, you are automatically on your guard about it and try to influence the results. When I took the race test, I didn’t want to my result to say that I was prejudiced towards blacks, so I was concious of making an effort to keep the response time for each category equal. On one hand, maybe I should have just let my relflexes take it over and have natural results, but it’s hard to not try and change them. That part in itself is almost an istinct/reflex.

  155. I took the implicit race test and it said I had moderate automatic preference for European Americans as opposed to African Americans. However, I don’t completely agree. It started out with European Americans and Pleasant on the same side. Then it wasn’t until after it switched the keys that it had African Americans and Pleasant on the same side. At that point I still wasn’t adjusted to the key change.

Of course, I’m going to have difficulty then linking African American and Pleasant.

Besides which, I was having trouble putting the Pleasant words in the Pleasant column and the Unpleasant words in the Unpleasant column. I kept putting words, such as hurt, in Pleasant. Don’t know why, I certainly don’t think hurt is pleasant. Anyway I don’t think the test was completely fair, since they changed keys before linking African American and Pleasant.

  159. Hey, I took the Asian American-European American IAT test.

My results were: Your data suggest a slight association of European American with American and Asian American with Foreign compared to Asian American with American and European American with Foreign.

    I also took Gender-Science IAT

My results were: Your data suggest a slight association of Male with Science and Female with Liberal Arts compared to Female with Science and Male with Liberal Arts.

Possible, I suppose. My sister IS going into music ed. but I plan to pursue a veterinary career after I finish highschool, so , who knows…

I took the Gay People-Straight People IAT.

My results were: Your data suggest a moderate automatic preference for Gay People compared to Straight People.

I found this interesting. I personally don’t know anybody that’s gay, or if I do I’m not aware they’re gay. However, I don’t believe that I’m prejudiced against gays. I guess this sort of backs that up…but who knows.

    I took Race-Weapons IAT also.

My results were: Your data suggest a moderate association of European American with Harmless Objects and African American with Weapons compared to African American with Harmless Objects and European American with Weapons.

Suppose it’s possible don’t really know. Anybody can carry a weapon: African American, European American, Asian American, Native American, or Creature from Outerspace.
I’m just glad they didn’t list ‘pencil’ because that would most definitely be a weapon. You could stab someobdy in the jugular vein in their neck and kill them or, this sounds more interesting, stab them in the eye, and it would go straight into their brain, and then you could wiggle it a round and give them permanent brain damage. Not to give anybody any ideas or anything… I wouldn’t actually DO any of those things, though.

    I took the Young-Old IAT.

My results were: Your data suggest little to no automatic preference between Old and Young.

Interesting, I’d say considering that I’m young (16 yrs. old, well almost. I’ll be sixteen March 29.) I would be likely to have a preference for young people.

I took the Presidential Preference IAT.

My results were: Your data suggest little to no automatic preference between Abraham Lincoln and George W. Bush.

Sounds about right. I really don’t have that much preference. Although, I might like Lincoln slightly more. I dunno.

    I took the Disalbed-Abled IAT.

My results were: Your data suggest a moderate automatic preference for Abled Persons compared to Disabled Persons.

Could be, I dunno. Don’t think about it that much.

    I took the Fat-Thin IAT.

My results were: Your data suggest a moderate automatic preference for Fat People compared to Thin People.

I find this interesting. If anything I would have said little or no difference, or that I had a slight preference for thin people, but I guess these don’t necessarily mean that much.

I took the Native-White American IAT.

My results were: Your data suggest a slight association of White Am. with Foreign and Native Am. with American compared to Native Am. with Foreign and White Am. with American.

In a way that sort of makes sense, I supppose. After all, technically Native Americans are more American than European Americans, since they WERE here first.

What I didn’t like was when they said to put the things that are foreign on one side and the things that are American on the other. Two of the picutres, the Amazon River, and a rain forests in Costa Rica, might not be in the US, but they are American, since they are in South America and Central America, respectively. Therefore, they ARE American.

I took the Light Skin-Dark sking IAT.

My results were: Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for Light Skin compared to Dark Skin.

By the way, what time is this on that the times are posted as on the blog? Cause it’s currently 2:00 my time, Alaska. Just curious.

So far I took the “disabled person” IAT, and according to the results, I have an “automatic preferance for disabled persons” or something like that. I am surprised, because I expected preferances for undisabled people. I don’t understand why these results have turned up, but it may have something to do with confusion. As I was reading about the purposes of the test and all that blah, my heart got heavier and heavier. When I was answering the questionare, my stomach actually began to hurt. After all that I get an “apfdp” (see above for meaning of acronym)! I am (as I said before) surprised! Anyway I’ll blog back with further results. GTG

I don’t think the test is really accurate. After you are doing the “e” and “i” keys, say, for example, the “e” is good and the “i” is bad. After doing that for a really long time, it is hard to switch and make “i” good and “e” bad. You have to slow down and think a little, or make mistakes.

  167. I took the president test, and in the beginniing, I had a writen test on George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. I took that, and I favored George and Democratic. Then, it had the typing part. Now here’s the dumb part. I can’t remember much about Clinton being president, and he was one of the two people who were randomly picked. THe other was George W. Bush. So I think that only knowing one of the presidents changed my outcome. I personaly hate bush, but never really knew Clinton. IN the end, the answer was that I slightly favored Clinton over bush. But what happened to George and Jefferson? I never found out which one I preferred. PLus, I think the answer should have been that I HATTEED bush, and that I LOOVVEEEDDD Clinton, even though I never knew him. Anyway, I don’t aree with this tests ways of finding out, and I think that only people who have known a few presidents, such as 5, should take it. I guess I knew two, but should have known three, if Bush wasn’t realected, ARRRRRGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!

  168. This study was completly wrong and very disturbing. I had to do which do i prefer gays or straights. I bet that that study tried to like change our way of what we think of things. Luckily it did not work on me, haha. By doing the first part of the separting test the computer can figure out what is your opinion. Then it you have to go the postitive and negative thing. Then they mix them up so you change you opinion about it. I prefer straights (no offense) and when they put the catagories in Gay/Postive and Straight/Negative they wanted me to think that gay was a postive thing and that straight was negative. Then scientists coul compare the fist results to the last and see if there was any change. Good try scientists but haha, in the end the survey said that strongly prefered straight people. I think that was the whole point of this survey, but then again I might be wrong…

Scientists are observing, not trying to change your beliefs.

And if i may ask, what’s wrong with gay people?

Now, this cannot be true. I have a strong prefrence for disabled people than abled people. I myself have multiple disabilities, and I have before FALLEN IN LOVE with people with disabilities like mine. I have been around disabled people since I was a baby. I have even considered suggesting that muse do an article on Aspergurs Syndrome (I’m very shy). Sorry that every sentence starts with I, but I am very ****** right now.

Now, part of the reason this might have happened in because I have hand disablilties and often press the wrong key. So, it is because of my disabilities that I got a certain prefrence on a dissbilty test. Ironic.

I thought I was going to have a small bias towards fat people, because everyone makes such a big deal out of being fat nowadays. I thought the photos they used for the fat-thin test were silly- they were all distorted and made me want to laugh rather than concentrate on the test.
I wasn’t suprised about the arab -muslim test resluts. Im not muslim, but my mother studies the Middle East and Islamic art and architecture, so I’ve always had a lot of Islam related things/conversations on my house.

    3. I have little or no automatic preference between pants and skirts.

    3. Even though I am a 16-year-old Muse reader, it appears that the vast majority of Muse readers are 13/14-year-olds (little kids, in other words). So how did you guys all register? (you have to be 18 to harbor subconscious prejudices, apparently). I just put my email where evidently your parents are supposed to put theirs, b/c I just didn’t really want to bother explaining to them that I have at last embraced the nerd within me and am thus participating in a magazine contest. Are my fellow Muse readers all sinners like me?

    4. Has anyone taken the Niffian/Laapian IAT? If any of you have, I welcome any suggestions as to what subconscious prejudices it is supposed to reveal.

    AND FINALLY…

    5. Sorry Harvard, but I think this “Implicit Associations Test” falls under the category of “Just another trashy online quiz meant to consume the time that should otherwise be spent doing homework”. Perhaps it might accurately measure reaction time and mental agility, but as to what lies in the subconscious? If anyone knows anything about a man named Sigmund Freud, this is right up that guy’s alley (one of his highly controversial theories purports that accidental misdemeanors and our reactions under stress reveal the workings of our subconscious). So…I think the test-namers should have called it the Implicit Associations with Freud Test (IAFT), but that’s just my opinion…

  193. ok…. this is super stupid. for example, i did the fat/thin test-clearly once they switch it its harder. the first sets are good-thin/fat-bad. once it switched, i just got confused. i pressed e for thin and good and i for bad and fat. duh!!!!! thats what i was used to from before. geez! besides- i bet people usually prefer their own race because that is the kind of people who have surrounded them since birth. i mean, white people might have a slightly stronger attraction to white people if they were raised in a white family. same with blacks, hispanics, middle eastern, oriental, etc. if you had equal expose to both from early on then you probably will have a slightly stronger preference to different types depending on your friends and peers- or if its all totoally equal, then its still probably whites because that is basically what books in school teach us up to a certain point (and i bet what we learn in the younger years sticks with us all our life). in school we learn to treat everyone equally, but tv and society say different, as is pointed out in “the bias hunters”. anyway-my humble opinion is that the test is the most STUPID, DUMB, UNINTELLIGENTLY SET UP WASTE OF TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AAAAUUUUUUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
