  3. I have a friend who’s obsessed with Wicked. My interests tend more toward the Broadway production The Lion King, which i saw in New York over the summer. It was really cool.

  4. Wicked. Hmm. Overrated. Like progress. And being nice to people.

Ikol: And talking in short sentences?
    Rhonda: Maybe.
Stig: Perhaps. I don’t know. Ask Queenie.

  5. Lion King is cool too. Wicked (the musical) is NOT overrated, although I agree it’s better than the book.

  10. I saw Wicked a year ago last November, with Idina Menzel. It was amazing. I even bought the soundtrack.

I read the book last summer, though, and it was just perverted.

  11. I loved the play. It was amazing. The soundtrack is awesome, the play is funny, and the actors and actressess are really good.

    The book was just perverted.

  12. I’m reading the book right now. It is v. v. good. I’d like to read more of this guy’s works. I’ll never look at the Wicked Witch of the Whatever the same way again.
And yes, the book was a bit erotic.

  13. The book is alright. It was a pretty interesting/new idea, but Gregory Maguire didn’t do enough with it. There was all this oppurtunity to give the characters/cultures stronger personalities etc., but he pretty much gave up halfway. The first half of the book is good, but after that, it pretty much goes downhill, as he gives in to simplifying it and taking shortcuts. Not highly recommended, as far as books go.

The musical wasn’t all that great either. I saw it live in NYC last year, but we had the second cast and the understudies for the second cast in our show, so it wasn’t as nice as the recordings I have. I was expecting a lot from it, which is why I was diappointed. They’ve changed the plot around a bit, to make it more Hollywood, but it isn’t handled too well. I came away not all that excited, even though it was the first Broadway I’d seen live and all that.

All in all: decent, but nothing more.

I’m such a ray of sunshine.

  14. Zallie, I must disagree with the show, b/c I liked it…maybe the cast had something to do with it, like you said…

Gregory Maguire DID write a sequel to Wicked, but I haven’t read it. One of the reasons I like the musical AND book is b/c they both play on identification as “good” or “bad” and because they’re both about being an individual…I did not see the show with Idina Menzel (although I hear shes great:))

  15. I love the musical, it makes the book look so….boring.
A lot of my friends love Wicked, too, some even sang some songs for the school talent show, a good 25% have the T-shirt.
The thread is a really good idea, and now, to quote Wicked….

    Did that really just happen
    Have I actually understood
This weird cork Ive tried to surpress
    Or hide
    Is a talent,
That could help me meet the Wizard,
If I make good, so I’ll make
    Good

Much more, but I’ll either do that later or you will have to buy the CD or see the show.

    Pie 0

  16. Excuse me, 28, I think that’s quirk. And Jadestone, you already posted that song.

I really love The Wizard and I! I think I’ll ignore my “I’m not gonna post any more songs on the blog and make you find the lyrics yourself” thing because I love it so much.

    When I meet the Wizard
    Once I prove my worth
And then I meet the Wizard
What I’ve waited for since: since birth!
And with all his Wizard wisdom
By my looks, he won’t be blinded
Do you think the Wizard is dumb?
    Or, like Munchkins, so small-minded?
    No! He’ll say to me,
“I see who you truly are –
A girl on whom I can rely!”
    And that’s how we’ll begin
    The Wizard and I……

    Once I’m with the Wizard
    My whole life will change
‘Cuz once you’re with the Wizard
    No one thinks you’re strange!
No father is not proud of you,
    No sister acts ashamed
And all of Oz has to love you
When by the Wizard you’re acclaimed
And this gift – or this curse –
    I have inside
Maybe at last, I’ll know why
When we are hand and hand –
    The Wizard and I!

And one day, he’ll say to me, “Elphaba,
A girl who is so superior
    Shouldn’t a girl who’s so good inside
    Have a matching exterior?
And since folks here to an absurd degree
    Seem fixated on your verdigris
Would it be all right by you
    If I de-greenify you?”

    And though of course
    That’s not important to me
“All right, why not?” I’ll reply
Oh, what a pair we’ll be
    The Wizard and I!
Yes, what a pair we’ll be
    The Wizard and-

    Unlimited
    My future is unlimited
And I’ve just had a vision
    Almost like a prophecy
I know – it sounds truly crazy
    And true, the vision’s hazy
But I swear, someday there’ll be
    A celebration throughout Oz
That’s all to do with me!

And I’ll stand there with the Wizard
    Feeling things I’ve never felt
And though I’d never show it
I’ll be so happy, I could melt!
    And so it will be
For the rest of my life
And I’ll want nothing else ’till I die
    Held in such high esteem
When people see me, they will scream
For half of Oz’s fav’rite team:
    The Wizard and I!

  18. Violetfire. That was not too long. ANY post about wicked could NOT be too long. Altho I think Defying Gravity is a better song than The Wizard and I…

    Something has changed within me
    Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game.
    Too late for second guessing,
Too late to go back to sleep,
It’s time to trust my instincts,
    Close my eyes,
    And leap…
It’s time to try defying gravity!

That’s my favorite CD IN THE WORLD!!!

  26. I haven’t seen the musical but I read the book and really liked it. I love getting lost in an alternate reality and it was easy to do that with Wicked. Of course, it was a gloomy reality and Elphaba was doomed, so there were some major clouds on the horizon of this alternate reality. That was a little stressful. So I don’t know if I’d read it again. I’m curious about the sequel, though. I’ll probably read that one of these days.

I disagree rhat Wicked gets too much attention.

However, I’ll definately agree that there’s lots of shows out there that don’t get nearly get enough attention.

    I’m limited
Just look at me – I’m limited
And just look at you –
You can do all I couldn’t do, Glinda
So now it’s up to you
    (spoken) For both of us
(sung) Now it’s up to you

    GLINDA
    I’ve heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
    Bringing something we must learn
    And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
    If we let them
And we help them in return
    Well, I don’t know if I believe that’s true
But I know I’m who I am today
    Because I knew you

Like a comet pulled from orbit
    As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
    Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better
    But because I knew you
I have been changed for good

    ELPHABA
    It well may be
That we will never meet again
    In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
    So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
    You’ll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
    By being my friend

Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
    In a distant wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better
    But because I knew you

    GLINDA
    Because I knew you

    BOTH
I have been changed for good

    ELPHABA
And just to clear the air
    I ask forgiveness
For the things I’ve done you blame me for

    GLINDA
But then, I guess we know
    There’s blame to share

    BOTH
And none of it seems to matter anymore

    GLINDA ELPHABA
Like a comet pulled Like a ship blown
From orbit as it Off it’s mooring
Passes a sun, like By a wind off the
A stream that meets Sea, like a seed
    A boulder, half-way Dropped by a
Through the wood Bird in the wood

    BOTH
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better
I do believe I have been changed for the better

    (sung) Whenever I see someone
    Less fortunate than I
    (And let’s face it – who isn’t
    Less fortunate than I?)
    My tender heart
    Tends to start to bleed
And when someone needs a makeover
I simply have to take over
I know I know exactly what they need
    And even in your case
Tho’ it’s the toughest case I’ve yet to face
    Don’t worry – I’m determined to succeed
    Follow my lead
    And yes, indeed
    You will be

    Popular!
    You’re gonna be popular!
I’ll teach you the proper ploys
    When you talk to boys
Little ways to flirt and flounce
I’ll show you what shoes to wear
    How to fix your hair
    Everything that really counts

    To be popular
    I’ll help you be popular
You’ll hang with the right cohorts
    You’ll be good at sports
Know the slang you’ve got to know
    So let’s start
‘Cause you’ve got an awfully long way to go

Don’t be offended by my frank analysis
Think of it as personality dialysis
Now that I’ve chosen to be come a pal, a
    Sister and adviser
    There’s nobody wiser
Not when it comes to popular –
    I know about popular
And with an assist from me
    To be who you’ll bee
    Instead of dreary who-you-were…… are
There’s nothing that can stop you
    From becoming popular…. laar:

    La la la la
    We’re gonna make
    You popular

    When I see depressing creatures
    With unprepossessing features
I remind them on their own behalf
    To think of
    Celebrated heads of state or
    Specially great communicators
Did they have brains or knowledge?
    Don’t make me laugh!
    They were popular! Please –
    It’s all about popular!
    It’s not about aptitude
    It’s the way you’re viewed
So it’s very shrewd to be
    Very very popular
    Like me!

(spoken) Why, Miss Elphaba, look at you. You’re beautiful.

    ELPHABA(spoken) I – I have to go

    GALINDA
    (spoken) You’re welcome!
    (sung) And though you protest
    Your disinterest
    I know clandestinely
You’re gonna grin and bear it
    Your new found popularity
    La la la la
    You’ll be popular –
Just not as quite as popular
    As me!

see the person playing the witch steps onto this tiny little platform annd pushes some lever or something with her back, and that causes this thing to lock around her waste. once she is locked on, a comp. makes this lifting apparatus lift the platform, and lights and flapping capes or whatever hide the tech stuff. and the things the actor does with her upper body and the broom help as well, apparently. i really really wanna see it… for me knowing how it is done enhances the experience, rather than destroying the suspense and awe. muuuuuust talk my daaaarling mother *snickers* into getting us tickets…. i wil find a way!!

  58. A Wicked thread? *cry* When I see Wicked online, I must cry, because I have wanted to see that musical for over a year now and I keep just missing it!!!
    *rant*
Like, the girl scouts were going to it one summer, but it was after I’d signed up for camp that week. And then my sister saw it at her camp, she doesn’t even care about it, and I didn’t see it. But I stole her soundtrack. And then I went with the girl scouts to see the drowsy chaperone, and we passed Gershwin Theater. And now I find out I’m in eighth grade band, and the seventh grade band is going to see Wicked. Which is also totally unfair, because they saw Beauty and the Beast or something when they were in sixth grade, and after seeing Phantom in my sixth grade, my last year band just went to the Bardavon for some concert and now we’re going to Music In The Parks instead, and we don’t even get to go to a good MITP park, like the other middle school does (Lake Compounce), but we have to go to Six Flags and drive forever and make me miss the girl scout campout this year too, and I can’t stand heights and rollercoasters either. Just looking at them makes me dizzy. Literally. Anyway, back to Wicked.
    *end rant*

I read the book. The middle was boring, school was pretty good, the beginning was OK, I liked the sort-of-end-y, climax-y part where Elphaba confronts Dorothy and then with the soul and stuff because it was well-written. I could feel the echoes. I’ll have to find the sequel sometime.
I heard the soundtrack. I liked Defying Gravity and For Good best. I thought Dancing Through Life was disappointing, because it to me revealed the most difference between the book and the musical. Fiyero kicked out of school? And the message was disappointing after having that be one of the only trombone melody parts when we played it at the end of last year when the teacher was trying out pieces for what was then next year.
My parents said it was still sold out last time they checked, when I went to see Hairspray over a year ago now.

*looks at Margaret* I thought you wre going to stuff me in a suitcase or something and take me!

I have to go now so I actually get sleep before the ELA tomorrow.
