Visual Arts, 2009

Whether your medium is traditional, digital, or in a realm of its own, if it’s visual (or you hope it will be one of these days), here’s a place to talk about it, dream about it, or share ideas, no matter if you’re an artist or not.

  1. I’ll kick this off by reposting Agrrrfishi’s prize-winning drawing since it probably wouldn’t have much chance of being seen on the old thread.

And I’ll repost my post from the old thread!

    Agrrrfishi- Nice! I love it!

I’ll send in my Three Griffins when I have enough free time to scan them into my computer.

I love your picture, Loreena. (That’s what I’m calling you.) The little balls of fur with legs- Are they wungs? I’m probably going to go off and start an attempt at something like that, since I always get inspired by that sort of thing. If I were one of those people I would be the girl with long sleeves, and the ponytail, or the girl right beside her, if I grew out my hair. Who would everyone else be? Out of curiosity.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    • Loreena Chatheng (AP) says:

Yes, they’re wungs. My image of wungs is based on the thing POSOC – No, Capricious – anyway, someone – drew a long time ago. And everyone except me and Beavo are kinda random. The guys are just…the only guys, and the girl in the front with the brown hair looks kinda like my sister. The girl next to her…I pretty much drew because I didn’t want to offend anyone, but she turned out the prettiest of all of them, so no sadnesses there.

That’s an interesting idea, but no. I’m not quite sure what it is…I think maybe a futuristic-looking gas mask, reflecting a red sky. That’s a pretty sweet idea, though, to have a mask for sensory deprivation, all I could think of was a room. Thanks for the idea.

Hmm. My sister’s friends are over, and they’re playing it, and my feet hurt.

There was a rule about “switching with your opposite”.

And apparently it’s fun, when you learn to play it at the same time as everyone else. Raynpho, it seems that it’s supposed to be vague, but I was on the verge of tears several times because of everyone’s lack of confusion as opposed to mine. I’ll go look it up on Wikipedia.

  44. From RoseQuartz:

    RoseQuartz’s description:

The first two are top and side views of a glass bowl I made in 3-D Art.

The third one is a 3-D Art project where we picked two colors of paper and a shape and covered a piece of poster board. I cut some triangles out of the edges to make it look cool.

The fourth one is a 60’s pop art style wooden tile that I painted just for fun. It’s double sided, but the back isn’t much good- I just painted it to cover up a botched attempt at drawing a fire- so I didn’t take a picture of it.

The fifth and sixth are back and front views of the clay house I made in 3-D. It’s *supposed* to be “Aztec turquoise,” but it didn’t fire right. The roof should be purple. I added Sharpie accents to the windows and roof edge.

The sharpie accents are really nice on it, too. If you’d told me you drew on your clay creation with a black sharpie I would’ve raised a few eyebrows, but that actually looks really cool.

Are these in your school art class? Or do you take art classes somewhere else? Because if it’s the former then, wow, your art classes are a lot better than mine have ever been.

    Pie 0

    • RoseQuartz says:

It was, indeed, my school art class. It’s an advanced elective. We have 8th grade 2-D and 3-D quarter-long electives, and then in high school we have a full-year 2-D Design course that’s a prerequisite for Advanced Studio Art. I’m taking 3-D 4th quarter, but I only have one more class (tomorrow), and that will probably be a studyhall. Hopefully I can take Drawing I and II next year… but since I’m taking Latin and Spanish, not to mention the fact that I don’t have any studyhalls… The chance is kind of slim. :(

      • Raynpho says:

Wow, you have art electives in middle school? *Raynpho is impressed* Our district’s art classes were obviously kind of an afterthought. (In middle school, everyone is stuck in a quarter of the same general art class, though not all at once obviously, a system which is set in place probably just so there is an art class. Half of the kids don’t want to be there, and the classes are too apathetic to do anything interesting or remotely awesome. ‘Tis a shame. Especially if you happen to actually like art.

The first one is yours truly as my MA person. It looks nothing like me, except the bottom half of the clothing. Second is the same person at the May Day Ball, looking slightly different. Next is my mental image of Luna the Lovely, drawn with the excuse of the May Day Ball. Last is my May Day Ball sheet. See if you can spot Luna.

    • Armada says:

I was wondering that…. but why the green nose? I think I’m the person with the red hair who enjoys the puffin puffs….but I was wearing a blue dress at the MDB, not a pink one. And Loreena would be the girl in the chiton saying ‘Praise Hestia’? Other than that, I can’t figure anyone else out.

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
      • Loreena Chatheng (AP) says:

The green nose was kind of random…it started out as a mistake. The green-haired person is supposed to be Beavo, but it can be anyone. The dresses really don’t match anyone’s, I wasn’t drawing this at school, so I couldn’t check. The orange-haired puffin puff-loving person is how I imagined Lady Bunniful for the longest time, until I saw a photo. But, again, it could be anyone. Any girl who wants to dance with Robert, anyway  . And the Hestia-praising person it technically CTN, although she looks nothing like that.

I think photos are freeze frames of time. You can take a picture of someone and they’ll be there forever, even if they die. Death does not affect time, it merely creates a new path to go down, instead of the one you expected. Time is intangible; you cannot affect time, since it is not there.

Incredible pictures everyone. Kiwi, the one of the dog just comes to life, I’m amazed. Fire and Hemlock, those pictures are nice too, I love the colors.

75~ Pictures are fun to look at. Every now and then I poke through the box of old pictures (from my lifetime) and every time I notice something new. Sometimes things even in the pictures didn’t seem significant at the time, but now they’re in a much larger context. Such as the one of several years ago and I swear, one of the people in the picture is now a friend of ours, but we didn’t know them then. It’s interesting.

76~ I love snooping through old photograph albums (and paintings, especially portraits, too). I remember looking through these old albums, the ones with the thick heavy pages that were about the size of the palm of one’s hand with heavy gilt covers and latches. Ones with faded ink in a trained hand that sometimes noted who the sitters were, and the mix of people, some of whom were obviously family, some who were noted as sisters or brothers but looked different, and grandfathers pictured when they were young in military uniform of days far past.
It always felt somewhat like I was looking through something that I shouldn’t have been, the fragile pages cracking under my small fingers as I held them gently and peered at their stern faces, trying to detect the smile they were repressing, trying to discern their character, what they had done in their lives, what the circumstances of the portrait was.
The post-death portraits of children always terrified me (as I wasn’t really that much older than some of them) but filled me with wonder at the delicacy of each perfectly arranged hair and stillness no living child could ever attain. The first few times I didn’t realize what those pictures were, and I just thought they were sleeping, perhaps.
I was always quiet though, when looking through the albums. If I could sit very still, and remain very quiet, maybe one of them would whisper me a hint, or move. Or so I hoped, anyway, somewhere deep inside.

Oh, that was long. Sorry.

Speaking of old photographs, I really want to find the ones mom and dad took on their honeymoon in Africa. I’ve mentioned this a few times, but I guess they’re somewhere hard to get at in the attic so it’ll take some work to get them out. We do have a few of them printed/framed on the walls though, and they’re really cool and close up–lions, elephants, gazelles.

I’ve been doodling more in class to keep myself awake. The last few have been of angels, and they’re okay, but I haven’t been using any references and was going from memory the basic anatomy and feather pattern of bird wings.

Also I suck at drawing musculature, especially on the torso x_x Maybe I should look up some references.

  87. Jadestone says:

Thanks everyone (: And yes, I did take all of them.

85.3- I’d love to learn film and darkroom someday, but I know nothing about it at the moment.
85.4- So are mine before I get to editing, a lot of the time, although part of it is knowing what kind of pictures to take.

All of them are digital. Most were taken with a Sony digital camera–let’s see, all it says on it is Cyber-shot. It’s an older camera, kind of clunky compared to new models but it had really good clarity for what I need.

I only have one on here from my new camera–a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex), the Canon XS Rebel–which is the peacock. I’ve taken a lot more with it since I got it but I’m still getting used to all the features and how it focuses.

All editing I do in iPhoto. I can think of a few I’ve added to with photoshop elements, but that’s only when I want to remove color/have partial color really. But I usually import them from the camera to iPhoto, then click the “effects” and “adjust” buttons.

In effects I can make it black&white (I never really use the camera’s option for it–I know I can get it in b&w later on the computer and have it in color), and there’s also a boost color and fade color option that I occasionally like. UNder adjust I play with the black and white points, the exposure and contrast, the saturation, and the temperature/tint to make it look more lifelike (or less, sometimes :)), and occasionally if a picture is to dark or light there’s a highlights/shadows bar where you can lessen them. There’s also a tool to remove blemishes and smooth out areas, but I rarely use it except on people’s skin (and in the picture of the sunset over the ice–there used to be a house in front of the trees but I blacked it out to make it look nicer ;))

It’s really easy to over edit stuff so after I finish a picture I usually let it sit for a day and then go back to it and see if I overdid it. I often do XD

Some pictures I take look better if I make them look surreal, almost, with faded colors and tints–I might send some in later, they can be cool to look at and entirely different from the original picture. ‘Surreal’ isn’t quite the right word but I can’t think of it at the moment.

There aren’t any pictures of my, though I think I did put up one of my friend JB which I submitted to a showcase. If that’s a problem I can take it down, though.
