Lunacy Appreciation Month

Forty years ago this month, Apollo 11 astronauts landed on Earth’s moon. In commemoration of the historic anniversary, MuseBlog dedicates the July random threads to moons and moonlets everywhere. After all, the word “month” comes from “moon.” What could be more apt?

How’s it going, Charon? Nyx? Trinculo? Callirrhoë?

(Users’ Manual: Obey The Rules. Consult The Guide. Have fun!)

My dad’s a dentist, so here’s my thing with them: I don’t mind my dad poking around in my mouth, because I’ve known him for 14 years. I do mind other people poking around in there, because I’m certain that they’re going to slip in my mouth with some razor-sharp tool that leaves me scarred for the rest of my life. Actually, the tool-slipping happened mostly at the orthodontist, but still, it hurts. What do people think of the dentist or hygienist talking to you while they are working on your mouth? It has a somewhat soothing affect on me.

Hate when they talk to me, because they expect me to respond while they’re doing crap in my mouth. I’d prefer to just zone out.

I use to LOVE the dentist, back when I was little. I could never understand why people didn’t like them. But then, when I turned about, oh, seven or eight maybe, all of a sudden I hated them. No longer did I get any “cool” prizes (really cheap-o rings and stickers…amazing, in the eyes of a little kid…) No more cute little toothbrushes or flavored fluoride. No one telling me I had such perfect little teeth or giving me a “special” chart to keep track of the ones I had lost. Now, I just find the fluoride disgusting (all of the flavors are) and the way they poke around in your mouth…gross. Also, they always tell you that it’ll be “fine” which translates into: it’ll make you gag, choke, and bleed, but other than that, you’ll be fine. Ugh.

1.1- I have nothing against dentists in general, I just hate their work. Which is nonetheless very useful in keeping our teeth from rotting and falling out of our heads.

-siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh- I’m burning through Doctor Who at a prodigious rate. I haven’t the will power to watch a single episode a week or something silly like that. When you dream about it, what are you supposed to do?* At any rate, I’m going to finish season four, and it’ll be OK, because I’ll just turn around and start at the beginning, back in the 60s, but voices from that era bug me. A lot. Everyone sounds the same! And I’m going to be sad about David Tennant not being the Doctor anymore. I’ll get over it, though. I hope iTunes will have season five once it starts.

Anyway. Meow’s coming tomorrow, and I’m super excited!

*Answer: get so involved in another story that you dream about it instead. If you’re lucky. If not, you dream about them both, which is usually what happens to me. So I wake up in the morning and have to sort out what belonged to the Doctor Who episode I watched, what belonged to my book, what belonged to real life, and what belonged to my dream. It’s not pleasant. On those days, I walk through my day expecting to find a blue police box on the corner inhabited by the Tenth Doctor, Hornblower, and my parents.

Yesterday I went to this climbing park thing. Basically platforms on trees connected by wires, with a few ropes and other stuff to climb on between them. I can’t believe how many kids in our class are afraid of heights. It’s funny, the way people go positively green if you just take them up a high tree (*is unafraid of heights*). Usually you have to elbow the jocks out of the way to get to anything fun which is sport related, but I had no trouble taking the lead. It was even offered to me. Ah well, if they want to miss out on the fun it’s their problem. I wish I could go back–the place pwned! Now I just want my arms to stop aching and my finger to uncurl and stay that way…

Love the picture in the helmet, Lady B! Not sure what it is, yet, but it’s still really funny, the classic picture with something else added. When I first saw the title of this month, I thought it was lunacy as in crazy. Wait, they’re spelled the same… I think the GAPAs have way too much time on their hands. How long has it been since one of you realized that ‘lunacy’ could mean either ‘moon-ness’ or ‘craziness’?

  9. Errata says:

1/1.2- SFTDP, but I’d like to point out that Pluto is a planet. Okay, so it’s not, officially, but the people that defined it ‘not a planet’ had really sketchy reasons. I think they were something like:
    1. Has to have an atmosphere
    2. Has to have enough gravity to pull itself into a ball.
    3. Has to have ‘Cleared its neighborhood’.

They didn’t even define ‘cleared its neighborhood’ properly, although I think someone went through and redefined it as something about ‘having cleared 90% of its orbital path’*. So, wait. Shouldn’t a planet be a planet from the start? Is this saying that the Earth wasn’t always a planet? Does Earth even qualify as a planet, under those conditions?

In case you were wondering, yes, I am prejudiced, as my father was fairly important in the recently launched ‘New Horizons’ project, (Not saying exactly what, for privacy purposes) which is suddenly, rather than the first mission to Pluto, is suddenly the first mission to a dwarf planet. Which isn’t really that exciting, if you know what I mean. And, I’m not sure I believe that people should be able to just proclaim that things that were internationally accepted aren’t so anymore. Without even a fair vote! See, apparently the convention was held in Eastern Europe, or somewhere, where the feeling was generally Pro-dwarf planet, and people who weren’t at the convention weren’t allowed to vote, which I think isn’t normally the case. Anyway, all of this is secondhand, from my dad, his colleges, or my mom, so you might want to research this to back it up.

*I went on Wikipedia and pulled up this definition:
In the end stages of planet formation, a planet will have cleared the neighbourhood of its own orbital zone, meaning it has become gravitationally dominant, and there are no other bodies of comparable size other than its own satellites or those otherwise under its gravitational influence. The current definition of a planet adopted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) only includes those bodies which have “cleared the neighbourhood of its orbit.”

  10. Pluto doesn’t care whether we call it a planet or not, and it’s of exactly the same scientific interest whether we call it a planet, a dwarf planet, or a humongous ice melon.

Personally, I like thinking of Pluto as the innermost representative of the swarm of similar objects (including some larger ones) that we call the Kuiper Belt. Other people prefer to think of it as a far-flung, lonely outsider with a weird, warped, tilted orbit. I suspect that people’s preferences for one definition or the other says more about human psychology than it does about planetary science. In the end, Pluto is Pluto.

  13. (8) We GAPAs have been moon loony for a long time, Errata.

    (11) I guess you won’t believe me if I said it was from NASA’s secret files…actually, I drew some Muses, mirrored and distorted them to fit the curvature of the helmet; then I used several blending layers (as Photoshop calls them) to make the Muses mesh with the original reflection. A bit of additional touchup and voilà: Neil Armstrong’s welcoming committee.

    (12) How did that giraffe chicken get in there?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    • SudoRandom says:

It’s the one behind Feather and Urania, to the direct left of what I have tentatively identified as Mimi. It could easily be another Muse, but the distortion makes it hard to see the ones in back, especially if they’re at the edge.

Hey! I’ve survived my first day, as you can see by my presence here.
I am, of course, at the library (where else?). Since there’s a swanky dinner going on on the ship at the moment, most of the crew, and obviously the dumb trainees that just signed on today (such as Yours Truly) aren’t allowed to go out there, and thus are hanging out elswhere. For me, the logical choice was to head to the library. Some went to a movie, some were talking of going to an amusement park, and I being an oddball found little interest in either. Not to mention that I’m still feeling a bit shy and so, instead of going and being social and making friends I choose to slink off to the library and hide around the computers. Sensible, logical child that I am…… (Sarcasm, in case you didn’t catch that. Just checking……)

Anyway, my Super Exciting Day included some general orientation and a good bit of briefing on safety stuff; PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices), exposure suits (goon clothing), alarms, importaint drills, etc. Then we got to go aloft to the fighting top, oh, fourty or so feet up (about halfway, ulp) which was thrilling. I actualy must brag here and say that I wasn’t completely terrified. I enjoyed it, and was plesantly surprised when I reached the futtock shrouds in less time and with less internal panicking than I thought there might be. I wasn’t even shaking. [/brag]

The rest of the crew seems pretty awesome in general, though I’m missing some of the banter with my ears all plugged up, dang snuffy nose! I’ve caught enough though…. It’s all good. It’s a lot more guys than girls, which is okay, I guess. Everyone seems pretty nice. Maybe I’ll regain proper use of my vocal chords again, the sooner the better. Curse being shy! Oh well, I’m sure it won’t be that long, I’m already able to not stutter on every word. *sigh*

Tonight: learning to sleep in a hammock. Not exactly looing forward to it. I’m tired now though, so hopefully by the tie the dinner is over I’ll be so whipped that I can sleep through anything. That’s the hope at least.

Anyway, this post is getting long and my fingers are getting tired. I’ll go check out some other threads while I rest, ha!

Oh, RE: pirates: If I become one? Sorry, that’s in the past tense, became. So guess what! I’m having an allergic reaction to mosquito bites! Doesn’t that make me happy.

I mean, I guess everyone’s allergic to mosquito bites to some extent, and I’ve always been a little more sensitive to them than most people, but now I’ve got dreadful hives and my left arm is covered in little red bumps where no mosquito ever bit me.
Naturally it’s not the worst thing ever or anything, but it’s annoying because I’ve got the entirety of mosquito season before me, and there’s no way I can avoid them completely. So yay.

I found this girl on Deviant Art who created “spirit” personifications of all the space shuttle orbiters as these cute creatures resembling horses/dragons. So I drew a “spirit’ (A person, not a horse/dragon) for the space station which turned out looking very well despite the face she was drawn by me.

I didn’t want the her just floating on an empty page, so I got out all my models and drew the station behind her, with a shuttle approaching from one side and a Soyuz approaching from the other, backed by the Earth curving away, with the moon just peaking out from behind the atmosphere. I just inked it. It’s going to look AWESOME when I’m done.

I”m in a library in Holland, and the keyboard is driving me insane. Z is where Y should be, and they only have internet explorer. 117- Oh, cool! -notes-

I went to bed last night at 12:30, and I was settling down to read JS&MN (but probably not for long) when I heard a smoke alarm. So I ran downstairs, but it wasn’t the one in living room, and the kitchen doesn’t even have one, so I went down to the basement. It was definitely coming from the basement, but I couldn’t see/smell any smoke. I took down the smoke alarm and went upstairs, but then I realized that the noise was still coming from the basement and the smoke alarm that I held in my hand had, in fact, been silent the entire time.
And the alarm in the basement stopped.
Several minutes later it started again, and I went back down to the basement and located another smoke alarm on a shelf, which was also silent.
Eventually I found the culprit, one of the smoke alarms from our old house that had a low battery and had been sitting in a box on a shelf so that I couldn’t see it.

I swear, those things have been more trouble than they’re worth.

(“There’s all our screwdrivers, a jug of vinegar, an urn full of pennies, a little glass dish of celery seeds, and a fire extinguisher.”) I don’t really know how to work it; my plan last night was to get all the half-gallon jars we possess, fill them with water, and dump them over the fire (if there was one) until it went out.

I’d best be off, hopefully this comment will go through, since the other one didn’t. *sigh* Who knew wordpress knew that I used a fake email?! I’ve done it before on public computers…..anyway, whatever.
Lots of love to you all, and godspeed on your many voyages into space, deep or shallow. ~Fiddler

Just a random fact that shows how much I need to get a life: The person in a local mall who changes the ads must have a life. The “Summer Salads always have an EDGE” one isn’t so bad, but “Wear green and gold till your eyes hurt (complete with kaleidoscopic pattern that DOES make my eyes hurt): Australia Day”? Australia Day was the 26th of January. This is July. But then, the fact that I go to the mall and notice this means I must have some semblance of a life. I hope.

For those of you that don’t know, New Horizons is the mission to Pluto, to take pictures and such. That site is New Horizon’s current position in relation to the Sun, Earth, Jupiter, and Pluto. It’s rather peaceful, watching the numbers go slowly up, or down, depending on what you’re watching.
I considered also including a link to the New Horizons official website thingy, but changed my mind. If someone wants it, ask.

Thanks for the link. It’s really cool to watch that and think that in the time I was watching the numbers, New Horizons got just a little closer to Pluto and a little farther from Earth.

NH is a mission I’m following very closely.

I wish I could say I was too, but really, I usually don’t think about it. Occasionally, though, I go to that site, watch the numbers go up, and remember the launch…
I was at the launch, just as a side note. It was neat, although, since it was delayed for two days before finally launching, sitting in the wind all day is something I’d gladly miss.

Speaking of which, I really need to fill out the paperwork for my own sailing adventure. Eep. I don’t know when my last tetanus shot was! Eleven years ago? And I don’t think I’ve ever had a Tuberculin test, but if I knew what it was I might have a better idea…

I’m altering a dress, it’s really fun. It’s maroon crepe (or something similar) and reaches almost to my ankles, and I’m going to put in Empire waist with a wide embroidered ribbon at the waist, and little ruffly cap sleeves, probably in light olive-green. I forgot to put in ample seam allowance, but I’m fixing that with the ribbon. I’m going to wear it for the Lughnasa festival.

I’ve been comparing Chrome to Firefox 3.5 the last day or so, and I must stay they’re both very good browsers. Chrome’s faster for me, as I have a lot of Firefox add-ons, and I like Chrome’s design a lot more. However, I have gotten quite used to my Firefox add-ons, and I appreciate the customability it has. Does anyone else use these? What do you think of them?

There is a series of Peanuts comics where Lucy is giving Linus a hard time about the Great Pumpkin, to which he replies something along the lines of, “If I can’t believe in the Great Pumpkin, I won’t believe in anything! I won’t believe in Christmas, I won’t believe in Easter, I won’t believe in [you get the point], Why, I won’t even believe in Bastille Day!

Hi from Japan! I don’t have time to read a week’s worth of backposts right now (and two weeks’ worth will be a tough task when I get back), but I missed you all and thought I’d take the opportunity of having internet to pop in. :)

I’ve got a couple of Muse-related items of conversation:
    a) I can’t believe I forgot to bring a copy of the magazine with me. There goes my chance of getting a letter to Muse published. Ah well.
    b) Mostly Harmless is infiltrating Japan. GAPAs, I emailed you the picture that should accompany this statement. It would be much appreciated if you post it for me. :)

I’ll be back in a bit less than a week, I believe. Bye until then!
