Families

Special stay-on-topic thread number 1, inspired by Mothers’ Day.

We all have them. What is yours like? Big or small, concentrated in one place or spread out over several continents? Do you keep in touch with your first cousins? Second cousins? Third cousins? Does your family keep track of its history? If so, how far back in time?

My family is small-ish, I suppose. I live with five people, but have only one cousin, and she’s adopted. My familiy lives all over the US and we don’t have big reunions very often. We’re pretty good at keeping track of ourselves. My dad knows a lot about our ancestors, who came to America in the very early 1600’s.

  3. I love my family! Yes, it sounds like a lie. But a lie it is not. I don’t fight with my parents; I argue with them, but I don’t really get in screaming matches or anything. I do with my younger older sister (the younger of my 2 older sisters, I mean) but she’s still cool. My family is kind of like a club. Like the Museblog, except we communicate through physical and verbal means, not virtual. We have random inside jokes and stuff like that. No one who is not part of my family can really understand it (except some really close friends who are pretty much family).
My extended family, I communicate with, but not as much. My dad’s side is bigger, but they all live in Australia. Still, we visit them every few years and sometimes they visit us. I like them all a lot.
On my moms side, mostly I only see my uncle and his sons, and occasionally my mom’s sister. I havent seen my mom’s mom in years and years. My uncle is cool. He’s a total hippie.

  10. My relatives live in different states than I do. We don’t really keep in contact with anyone more distantly related than first cousins.

My ancestors on my dad’s side immigrated from Romania or somewhere like that. Half of my mother’s side came from Italy, and the others have been here since the 1600s or 1700s. I had to research my ancestors for a history project this year, but I’ve kind of forgotten since then.

My family…it seems like all the closeness has disappeared since we moved two years ago. I mean, I still love my family, but I don’t really see them a lot anymore. The time I spend in the same room as either of my parents is probably less than an hour a day.
My dad is always SO tense when he gets back from work, and all he wants to do is shout at my brother, because my brother has not yet learned how to stay out of Dad’s way. I do, but sometimes I feel starved for any bit of attention of love I can get.

  11. I think I’ve told this story, but I will tell it again for because I like it.

The reason my dad is Australian is this: his very many times great grandfather lived in Britian when they used Australia as a place to send all their convicts. This man’s name was Hardy Harry. Hardy Harry was apparently a poor man, because he was sent to Australia on a convict ship for theivery. Was did he thieve? I shall tell you what the theived:
    24 umbrellas.
From the Lord Mayor of London.
    I’m not making this up.
So there you have it. It you ever meet me, hide your umbrellas. I might not be able to restrain my self from snatching them. It’s in my blood.

Anyway, it just occurred to me that that wasn’t entirely on topic, so I’ll say something else.

(8)Cool! My moms ancestors also came over on the Mayflower, though I don’t know if any of them were famous. I think a later ancestor did live next door to Samuel Adams.

Yeah, none of my relatives live near me. I don’t really have any cousins my age, either, except a boy cousin who lives in Australia who’s a year and half older than me. But he and his older sister are both pretty cool.

This thread is such a coincidence…..the other day, I came upon a family tree. My great-grandmother (on my dad’s side of the family) spent half of her life putting it together – it has the names, birthdates, birthplace, death dates, and death place of our relatives/ancestors since the 1500’s!!

Most of my relatives (on my dad’s mom’s mom’s side of the family) are from Germany or Yugoslavia.

I’m pretty sure that my dad’s dad’s dad’s side of the family is 100% Polish, and that my mom’s side of the family is mostly Dutch, but I’m not sure.

  22. My family is awfully small. I have a sister, two parents, two paternal grandparents, a paternal uncle, and his partner, who is either my maritally-related aunt/uncle or just an uncle. That’s my paternal family-my mother’s family is estranged from us. I think they’re vaguely Mexican-Polish-American.

My mother is a professional chef, my father is a microbiologist, my grandfather is a retired biologist (and friend of Frans de Waal and Arvid Carlsson {who hates me for spilling pudding on his head. Not my fault, the one waitress didn’t show up in time for the formal dinner and I had to sub and not go to an important jazz concert, which everyone said was really good afterwards. One of the French page-waiters tripped me and the bowl of pud flew over to land on him. He began to orate in Norwegian. It was totally mortifying}, among other people). My grandmother is a retired housewife, and my uncle runs a bridge parlour. His partner owns a sushi restaurant. Six Japanese head-chef people work there, and they refer to me as “Queenie-chan” occasionally. Anyway, the point here is that

13-The real question to ask here is why the Lord Mayor of London possessed 24 umbrellas. Did he collect them? Was Harry Harvey framed or involved in a secret plot to use the umbrellas for some nefarious and villainous purpose?

I like that theory very much. It is a common joke in my family, because that is the questions we all asked when we heard the story. Who needs 24 umbrellas? I think it would be fun to write a novel about the whole thing.
( if you wanted to be boring, you could say that it was most likely they simply belonged to the Lord Mayor of London because he was in the umbrella trade, and that Hardy Harry stole an expenisive looking package of the back of wagon without know what it was or to whom it belonged, but who wants to be boring?)

This is fun. Does anyone else have any theories on why someone would own 24 unbrellas and why someone else whould want to steal them?
I will post my own as soon as I can, but I really really really need to do my algebra homework now.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  35. That’s a good one too, I guess. I wouldn’t know. I don’t have much use for umbrellas, except as sun-parasals (sp?).

It could have been a superstition. Like “stealing 24 umbrellas counteracts the bad luck obtained by tripping over a black cat, stumbling under a ladder and running into a mirror, thus breaking it*
Or it could have been that he was actually in league with the Lord Mayor of London, and the whole theft was actually a passing of information, and the fact that it was 24 umbrellas was some type of code. Like, “if the package you steal is 24 umbrellas, meet me at the Tower at 3 o’clock. If it is 32 dyed alpaca fur cardigans, throw the body in the river and escape to the country”. Only Hardy Harry never got to meet the Lord Mayor at the tower at 3 o clock because he was arrested and shipped off the other side of the planet.

This could be a fun idea for a thread. Theories on Random Events. it could be a mixture betweent “Theories of Life, Death, the Unviverse and Everything” and “RRR” threads.

  37. I have traced my family tree back about 400 years. On My mom’s side, we are English..and not the gentry, either. Namely, Pirates. We still have some of the pirated stuff. I wonder if those Koreans would like thier treasure chest back? We arrived in America slightly before the mayflower, tired of being pirates, and eventually, one of them there piratey offspring married Benjamin Franklin’s blood related neice. She is my great (x alot) grandmother. So I’m related to Good ol Ben.

My dad’s side is French, supposedly related to Emperor Preggers Man, Napoleon. Thats What my Aunt said. I’m not sure I believe her. However, we did have a saint somewhere. My other Aunt, who lives in California, has a holy relic (fingerbone), but she lent it to her hairdresser, and I have no idea what happened to it. I think it is funny that I have a Catholic Saint in my family, Because I’m protestant. Honh honh honh. (That was supposed to be French laughter).

I won’t even go into the small percentage of African~American ancestry. Or my stepmother’s Chinese side. Or my stepfather’s Scottish / Canadian thingie. I have a headache now.
