MBers’ Religions

While people finish the required reading for the World Religions thread, here’s a place where MuseBloggers can warm up by talking about their own religions or other religions they’ve experienced.

I hate it when teachers ask you about your religion. It’s personal, and I don’t want to announce it in front of the class. Convo:

Teacher: And Juliette? What’s your religion?
Me: With all due respect, madam, I would prefer not to announce my denomination in so public a manner.
    Teacher: You’re Jewish, right?
Me: No, madam. I refer to my earlier comments about the reluctance to announce my personal beliefs.
Teacher: Juliette, if you don’t tell me whether you’re Christian or Jewish, I will detain you.
Me: Very well. Neither, madam. I am an atheist.
    Jack: Wait. What’s that?
    Me: Uf!
    Teacher: Yeah. Ditto.
Me: It means, as anyone knows, dear lady, that I do not believe in a god or a religion. *bow*

No, for this thread, you don’t have to have read a book. That’s the other thread, World Religions. I hope many of you will read and start to post over there. For this one, though, you can just talk about what you already know.

I haven’t been following you. I’m just here (briefly). Unitarians are a church, but I don’t think they insist that you believe anything in particular. One recently said to me, “Oh, yes, we’ve got the Buddha-tarians, we’ve got the Wiccans…”

By the way, if you like quizzes, the Belief-omatic (that’s a link) over on beliefnet.com first asks you your opinions about certain Big Questions and then tells you which religions your beliefs most closely resemble. It’s interesting.

  43. Pentatonikk says:

I waffle between Buddhist, agnostic, and atheist. It really depends on my mood, oddly enough. Occasionaly I get a bout of Daoism or Zen, too. I feel more than a bit strange talking about religion like it’s just something that happens to me, but that’s the best way for me to describe it.

The idea of different religions mixing seems very weird to most Westerners, but the lovely Cartoon History of the Universe section on China says that most people there didn’t subscribe to one specific religion. Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism just kind of melted together, and different people believed what they believed and didn’t sweat it much what category it fell under. That’s kind of how I feel about religion: I don’t believe in any sort of a god, but I’m not sure what else is out there.

Well, as usual, I’m going to stick my head in and comment on the religion thread. No, I can never resist.

For all of you who are really trying to find answers, and want to understand what Christians believe, why, and logical explanations for it, PLEASE read “Mere Christianity”, by C. S. Lewis. For me, it was life changing. If you are really trying to find God, please read this book. Seriously, I’m begging you. Please, just read it with an open mind, and consider what he’s saying. I’m not asking you to convert to Christianity, and I’m not asking you to read a justification for something that doesn’t makes sense. It’s just a great book. It’s really easy to read, and really logical.

I’m trying to take that “Belief-O-Matic” thingie, but it’s taking FOREVER. I’ve been waiting ten minutes on the second page. Oh, wait, things are going better now.

if you don’t belive in anything what’s the point of life???

Here’s my answer: Does it make a difference whether I believe in anything or not? My point in life is to change this world for the better, because I’m tired of seeing all the suffering. If I fufill my point in life, humans who live afters will live better. Does it matter that I don’t believe my soul will be around to see it happen? I don’t believe, in a cosmic sense, that there is a point to life. But it’s here, and we should do the best we can with it, sense, as we can all clearly see, suffering is bad. I hope I explained myself well enough.

Sikhism, for those of you who are ignorant, is a form of Hinduism. Sikhism shares many of the beliefs of Hinduism but follows a different guru. Sikh men take the last name “Singh”, which means lion. They wear turbans and long hair (out of the belief that power lies in the hair) and are always armed. Always. I do not know how exactly they go on airplanes or through security, but every few years a Sikh child is taken to court over the wearing of the ceremonial dagger and it splashes over the Web. I have no idea how you have managed never to meet a Sikh, but there you have it. It’s pronounced “seek”, by the way.

68 (NfC)- Since when has the supposed ‘point’ of life been believing in God? I say God because we atheists can believe in other things. For example, the very defenition of ‘atheist’ means that you believe there is no god.

And since when has life had a point? We’re just alive. There’s no higher purpose to it– we’re just here. Life is completely pointless, but it’s more interesting than the alternative. (Actually, I don’t believe that’s a quote. Correct me if I’m wrong.)

This may sound harsh, but it’s one of the things I, an atheist (more or less) believe in. I’m not saying that atheism is the One True Pathe of Life or anything. It’s how I choose to live (more or less), and I’m sick of misconceptions about it.

Once, at the county fair, my friend allowed us to be dragged into a tent of evangelists. This woman told us a story about Jesus, and then asked us if we had accepted him into our lives yet. It wasn’t so bad for my friend, cause she’s episcopalian, but I wanted to die the whole time. Then the lady asked us which church we attended, and I just sort freaked out and ran away.

Interesting that my first result is Quaker, since unfortunately I know very little about them. I go to a Southern Baptist church right now, but I don’t consider myself to be a Baptist, nor am I Protestant. My parents go to a Catholic church, which I sometimes attend, but I don’t think of myself as a Catholic, either. I’m a Christian, but I haven’t found a specific denomination to associate myself with yet. Maybe I will eventually.

24 – For the most part, I am very happy with my religion, but there are two things that annoy me about it. One is that when I say that I’m a Christian people ask me “what kind of Christian”. They’re not satisfied when I tell them that I follow Christ but I don’t have a denomination; they insist that I must be Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, or something else. Why can’t I just be a Christian without a specific label attached? The other thing that annoys me is when Christians start attacking other religions without knowing anything about them, which happens much too often.

103/104 – I feel your pain. No offense if there are any Southern Baptists here, but I had to go to a Baptist summer camp and I absolutely hated it. Everyone there was extremely narrow-minded. If I so much as mentioned the name of any religion but Christianity, people would be shocked and start praying for my soul immediately. The teachers spent the whole week insulting other religions they knew nothing about and insisting that we must all believe exactly like them or rot in Hell (okay, they didn’t say it quite like that, but that’s what they meant). Ugh.

Basically, if I understand it correctly, it’s people who want to be religious, but don’t want to commit to any one idea.

Scientology is a religion that evolved from some pulp fiction writer. It’s based of the idea that life it full of traumas, and that all pain is psychological, I think. That’s what I remeber from last time I wikied it.

I think you could take “humanist” category off the list. It’s basically the same as atheism or agnosticism. Humanists are just more spefically interested in the importance of people.

Unrelatedly, I remember in eighth grade once I was working on a history project in a group with two other people. For some reason, they were discussing religion- the girl was (and probably still is) christian (probably baptist or something) and the boy was/is Baha’i (I think that’s how it’s spelled). And so the girl asks me what I am. And I sort of answer vaguely that I don’t believe in anything in particular, so she asks me if I believe in Jesus and I say no. And so then she doesn’t talk to me for the rest of the assignment.

I don’t really know what I believe in. I used to be Christian, but I came to the conclusion that if there is a god, and he personally created me, then he wouldn’t have let my life suck this bad. After leaving Chrisitianity, I tried atheism. That just left me too depressed, and luckily I found a kid at my school that had been in a similar situation before. He went through what I was going through, and felt the same things. He also said that in atheism he got so depressed he started taking crack. Then several major things happened that some how changed him. I don’t know what they are, but they were big, and big enough that he doesn’t want to talk about them. Anyway, he told me everything he knew about seeing, illusional worlds, and all of his other beliefs. It sounded alot better than what I was heading for, so I accepted his beliefs as my own. Even so, it’s not really a religion, just a set of beliefs. So I guess you could say that I am a spiritual atheist. I don’t believe in any “god”, but I do have spiritual beliefs.

There shouldn’t be any right or wrong in religion. except that I think we can all agree that right is treating others in was that are kind to them.

156, 158- It’s interesting how you believe that everything you believe religiously is true and everything contrary to that is false.. I mean, and your use of the Bible to prove that Islam isn’t “true” or something is alson interesting, since how do you know the Bible isn’t lies? How do you know that the whole thing isn’t a bag of made-up fantasy, or that everyone’s gotten it wrong and God is really a chicken who will doom all meat eaters to Hell for all eternety?

As for me, personally, I believe that life ends at death. You die, and that’s the end, basically. Then you get buried/cremated and the materials that make up your body go on to nourish other creatures. So I suppose you could say that you get reincarnated in that way, since you go on to build up the tissues and whatever of another living organism..

168: I believe the Bible is true because of what I’ve been taught, what I’ve read, and how I’ve prayed to find out if it is or not. I realize, though, that lots of controversy in the Bible is because the people who translated it into English probable made one or two mistakes. They were only human. Because of the way Jesus told parables and other some-such, changing one word could change the whole meaning.

I also believe the Book of Mormon to be another Testament of Jesus Christ. It tells about the peoples who lived on this continent throughout the ages, which really isn’t as far-fetched as people initially think. If God loves all men, wouldn’t he try to reach people who weren’t living in Europe or Asia? For some periods of American history they believed in him, but finally they rennouced him.

I strongly encourage you to read it. Unlike Psalms, there are some really funny/good stories in there. Once you get past the thees and thous and such.

    (156) You might disagree with what Muhammad/Mohammed said, but that doesn’t make him a liar. Liars know they’re not telling the truth. If Muhammad believed what he said, then he was not lying. I haven’t heard any evidence that he was not sincere.

    (173) Beliefs can be wrong. If I believe that I’m George Washington, or that the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, or that water freezes at 100 degrees Celsius and boils at zero, then I’m wrong. As far as history goes, the Catholic Church has kind of a suckish reputation. I mean, maybe in it’s simplest form it’s okay, but throughout history, there have been figures who have mutilated it into excuses for genocide and other rather nasty things. Like the Spanish Inquisition and the Reconquista. I’m not saying that people in other religions haven’t done that, but it seems like historically the Catholic Church has had the biggest impact when they do things like that. I mean, they were the people who repressed scientific and creative genius during the Middle Ages (I suppose the feudal system also had a lot to do with that, but at the heart of the feudal system was the Catholic Church). You’re chronically frowned upon for that. I just thought I’d put that out there. History plays a much bigger part in religion then several people care to think. The things that people did thousands of years ago when they were driven by their faith seriously affects today’s world. I mean, if it weren’t for the Crusades, Muslims and Christians would probably be getting along like peanut butter and chocolate right now! Okay… probably not, but they’d be getting along better.

I’m terribly sorry if this offends any Catholics. I just thought I’d put it out there.

    (207) I understand where you’re coming from, but the Crusades are sort of all of Christianity’s fault since there were no other churches at the time. The reason the Catholic church has “the most impact” is because it was the first church, founded by Peter.( I think. Hahahaha my knowledge of my own church is lacking. -_-;; )
Catholic means “universal”. It’s the oldest, and so has had a lot happen to it.

But as E~A said, that was some time ago. I’m not saying “Let’s forget the Crusades and have some chips” ,I’m saying don’t judge me for my grandfather’s mistakes- and that goes for all religions, since more than just the Catholic one have indeed persecuted.

like (216) no, VZ doesn’t need to say it like that. Both phrasings mean the same thing.
