Curious Musophiles have been asking what everyone’s favorite comic strip looked like in the old days. Ever the slaves to your whims, we’ve found a scannable copy and posted it here for your delectation. Herewith, a scrap of ancient history…

Phreeow. But that is really incredible! I like it. Good dialogue, nice little simple drawings-much different from our contemporary versions of Kokoco, but still quite nice and Kokopelli’s hair keeps changing like a gobstopper’s color.

(1) I don’t think Koko shrunk… He’s still about the same height a feather. Mabe he got fat?
Larry Gornic’s style changed a lot since then! It might be good for figuring out the dates of issues with ripped – off covers. (not that there should be any, but they do come off very easaly. One of the best indicators i noticed is the color of Urania’s robe. In the older issued it’s purple.

ha, that reminds me of my vegetarian-wannabe friends. they say that they hate meat, but they get grossed out when they see me eating spinich quiche or greek pizza, etc

Hey, cool! Retro Koko! I don’t think Koko’s hair is much longer. Actually, he’s pretty similar to the modern-day Koko, except he seems to have intermittent knees. Feather is totally different, though. He seems to hang his head out as far from his body as he can, like Goober (from Andy Griffith), of those Zits people. Plus, his buggy eyes make him look a bit clueless, which of course, he is. Then of course there’s the color change. Speaking of first things and such, Where is the first MuseBlog comment, GAPA(s)?
I know this may come as a nasty shock to you all. Please, sit down if you are not already doing so. But…

Technically, yes, it would be. But I don’t think Muse would sue you for it.

Feathers coat/costume/feathers are yellow in this one. In the current ones they are grey. I know this very well. When I first started getting Muse I didn’t know who they were. So I went to the library and checked out the entire Muse collection (huge- I was the first person to check some out in months. They were going to get rid of it. *gasp*) and red it and then found a chort of muses. I then spent all night coppying the muses by hand. I think that Feathers grey coat was the hardest but it might have been Uranias sash.
Yeah they’ve deffintly changed.

I think you may be right. I remember looking at the past issues section on the fanpage, and it seemed to suggest that the first issue of Muse, contained an introduction to the new Muses, rather then an actual episode of K&C. The first K&C came, I would assume, during the second issue.

Koko called Feather his ‘Main Muse,’ something I haven’t seen him do in the magazine in recent years. He does it at least a couple times throughout the book though.

hehehehehe…yeah, i always notice that vegetarians often translate ‘vegetables’ as ‘sometimes including chicken and/or fish.’ i dont get it; fish are real living aniamls. they swim and eat and poop and all that. and chickens, though some of the stupidest birds on the planet, are very much alive. but then, i guess if you said that and were a vegetarian, you wouldnt be allowed to eath eggs. [my friend, when she was in her veggie phase, called eggs aborted baby chickens. she still ate them, however, and with much glee.]and when you actually think about it, plants are most definitely living things. i wonder what tree-huggers eat…dirt? but there are too many microorganisms living in dirt, and that would disrupt the enviroment… sometimes i think that the ecologists and scientists would all just like us to move to a different planet. but humans are part of the ecosystem, too…

48-You do know that most commercial chicken eggs are non-fertilized, meaning they never had a chance of becoming chicks. Ecology is kind of like bungee cord jumping-too much hangs in the balance. No worries, though-on Haskamir it all fits in because our population is so titchy. Humans are part of the ecosystem, but the only part that’s actively and consciously hurting the rest of the ecosystem.
Just think-if no one ate the animals, they’d quit being scared, and overpopulate, forcing us all to move together, creating one mega-city per country. Then we’d all die out, and animals would rule the world. SO…vegetarians are suicidal.
Is there a word like suicidal meaning killing you and everyone else you know?
48 (Bacon)- I’m a vegetarian (lacto-ovo), and I don’t eat chicken or fish. At all. Ever. And it’s vegans who don’t eat the eggs. (Or lacto vegetarians, I guess.) Most proper vegetarians tend to have a slightly snuffy attitude towards those who call themselves ‘vegetarian’ and still eat chicken or fish. It’s fine to eat just those and no red meat; just don’t call yourself vegetarian for it.

im a lacto-ovo vegetarian also, but i rarely eat eggs. what bothers me is the way the chickens who lay them are raised
I don’t eat red meat unless there’s a lot where I am (ie at a wedding they ordered fish dishes and pork dishes but the fish didn’t come and they didn’t have much else I like so I had a little of the pig [for some reason it tasted like chicken] but that was just for the protein especially because I wasn’t having my usual 1 to 3 glasses of milk. But I think that was the last time in 6 months or a year). If anyone calls me a vegitarian I correct them, but I have a good friend who’s whole family is vegan. His mom is a great cook.
In the middle– earth issue f’s robe & fethrs were purple, ick.

And many vegetarians (me included) don’t believe that everybody on earth must be vegetarian. To us, that’s like omnivores saying we should all eat meat. Sure, we’d like it if more people went veggie, but we won’t force anyone. Many omnivores seem to think we want to convert the entire world, which is ridiculous.
And besides, most of the meat we eat now comes from domesticated animals who have had all the intelligence bred out of them anyway. So they won’t be taking over the world any time soon.
I’m pretty sure you’re kidding, but other people have said stuff like this to me before and meant it. So I’m just clearing that up.
TYPES OF VEGGIE-NESS: A QUICK PRIMER

-Lacto-ovo- what most people think of when they hear the word ‘vegetarian’. (Excepting Bacon, of course.) Lacto-ovos eat no meat, but do eat eggs and milk, hence the name. (It’s LATIN, [censored]-it, LATIN!) Lactovegetarians eat dairy but no eggs, and ovovegetarians eat eggs but no dairy. I’m lacto-ovo.
-Vegan- Vegans don’t eat dairy or eggs, in addition to meat products. Some vegans eat honey; others don’t. I have a pair of vegan friends who argue quite noisily about this whenever they see each other. Which is quite often, as they’re dating…
-Fruitarian- Someone who only eats fruits and nuts. Tomatoes and other veggie-fruits count as fruits in this instance. You don’t see many of these out there (even in my liberal little area, which boasts a higher vegetarian-restaurant-to-person ratio than almost anywhere else I’ve seen or heard of). I’d like to be a fruitarian, because it means nothing dies so I can eat (unless you count aborted cantaloupes/cherries/apples/pistachios/etc.) However, with my metabolism, I’d probably starve.
-Pollovegetarian and pescovegetarian- This is what Bacon was talking about. These are pseudo-vegetarians. Pollos eat chicken, and pescos eat fish. (LATIN AGAIN. Ph3ar the Latin. And the bad 1337.)

There are a lot of letters in the magazine, that seem to suggest that most kids think Chad and Urania are going to get married someday.

(79) Eww, eww & eww! Urania’s over 2,000 years old! Then again, Kokopelli might be pretty old, too. I shopuldn’t be gossiping about the muses.
(60) I didn’t know there were people who theid to force vegetatianisom on others until I met this girl at school. She kept bringing it up at lunch and then talking about meat prossesing plants, and baby cows and pigs, and how sad my hamburger was sad it could never frolic in a sunny feild again. (yes, she’d pretend she was listening to food. she wasn’t good at convinceing people) It just got on everyone’s nerves, though.
I really want to see the Kokopelli and Company from the toilet issue.
(52) If people don’t eat animals, bears , mountian lions, raptors etc. will. You con’t force a tiger to be vegetarian. And if there were no carnivors, the population of rabits and white tailed deer would explode. they’d eventually eat all the plants and then they’d die out in the winter. Anyway, if animals did rule the world, they might do a better job than we’ve been doing.

It was in the October 1997 issue, as recorded in the Fan Page’s inestimably handy List of Back Issues. Urania is probably still bitter about the way things turned out.
The Old Feather looks a little less, well, technicolor, but I get the idea.
