  20. WWWWWWWHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I the July/Agust issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The article about cannibalism was great! But, I have one complaint- LARRY GONICK MADE BO THE WRONG COLOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bo’s not dark brown! So, I shall punish Larry Gonick in accordance with the issue. *goes to Larry Gonick’s house, clubs him, and eats him* There. I feel much better now.

  22. The magazine is produced in Chicago, but it’s printed and shipped from New England. It would be interesting to write arrival dates on a map and look for patterns.

    Squid 0
  23. I humbly volunteer to do that, but for September when I have more spare time. Wait… that’ll be school! Scratch that. Well, I might do it then anyway, since I’m too lazy to slog through previous posts to find arrival dates.

  26. I got mine a couple of days ago and i live in michigan too. it was pretty cool, but the whole cannalism thing was gross. i liked the cat painter and all the people analyzing it. yeah, bo definitly didnt look like bo in the cartoon though.

  29. 15- Is calling us grasshoppers a refrence to the cover?
43- I think it was cool. I’ve see my friends cats paint (much to the dislike of her owners) but mostly its just stepping in exactly the wrong places with colored feet.

  30. Jadestone,

Calling you “grasshoppers” was a reference to an ancient TV show called Kung Fu, on which a venerable martial-arts master used that nickname (in the singular) when instructing his impatient young disciple. MuseBloggers don’t remind me very much of a swarm of cannibalistic insects–although, now that you mention it…

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  31. Oh yes, I know that. I just also noticed that the cover of this issue has a grasshopper on it and noticed the similarity to what you said.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  32. (43) Yes, it must be a spoof. Did you notice the names- “Rosebush” and “Weeder”? I mean, tell me that’s a coincidence. I think not. Also… well, it wasn’t exactly entirely serious, was it? I mean the thing was brimming with sarcasm and satire… I really liked that, though. It was interesting none the less.

Fractals are fascinating! I want to go and try to find my own right now. I was really glad they did an article on Pollock. I had heard the name and seen some of the paintings, but I never knew anything about him.

I also liked the bit on game awari. I grew up playing a slightly different, but very similar mancalla game.

Bo looked DIFFERENT in Koko&Co. But then, Mr. Gonick’s never really done one that was so close on her face before.

  33. My issue arrived yesterday (I’m from Michigan, to let the surveyers know) when I was lying in bed, writhing in pain and suffering from a pulled groin and Mum brought it upstairs to me. This and my scores helped the healing of my precious muscle.
The cannabalism article was pretty sweet – I did manage to make some one-sided dinner conversation out of it (unless you count looks of horror or disgust as talking), much to the displeasure of my mum.
The fractals article was FASCINATING!! How they find patterns in such chaotic things….Wow. There’s an AWESOME fractal we used to have as a desktop, but it must’ve gotten lost when we got our Mac. It was of a hand, with hands on the fingers and so on. It’s quite hynotising, actually.
And in Kokopelli and Company, it was downright WEIRD to see Bo worked up about something, all angry and such. Woah.
Again, you delivered – another SPECTACULAR issue!!

  34. 48-slightly diff? I didn’t think so. That game seemed exactly like mancala to me. And i ♥ that game. But then i do play slightly differently from most people. Mebbe i’ve been playing awari the whole time and just haven’t noticed…

btw I GOT IT!!! w00t! If you haven’t figured that out by now.

Fractals pwn. Although i’m still not quite sure i understand them. What exactly is the definition of a fractal?

The Ivars Peterson was actually one of my favs this time, which is surprising. I mean his stuff’s cool, but i’m not really in to math and stuff. I’d say this is his best yet, w/possible exception of the chess stuff, that was fun.

If you haven’t noticed, i like games.

Oh yeah and he mentioned connect four in the little italicized bio whatsit at the bottom-I PWN THAT GAME! I am the CHAMP! I am not bragging, this is absolute truth. I beat just about all of Highlands Middle Skool in-that’s right-middle skool and i am proclaimed household champion time and time again. My lb’s almost as good as i am so we have some seriously exciting games. Mom never knows what in middle-earth we’re doing. She’s really bad and always loses right away, but we fill up almost the whole board.

Sry for rant, that’s just my fav game EVER besides schmere, cuz schmere pwns everything. :D

The cannibalism stuff was great. I actually read it during dinner, reading the interesting bits out loud. Parents disgusted, of course. I try.

  35. I got it yesterday, but JS didn’t tell me until about three o’clock. (evil eye) I thought it was great, as all Muses are, but not one that would go on my Personal Favorites list.
I also think that the kitty-painting thing was a scam. Most cats I’ve met wouldn’t put the paint on a canvas, for a start. They’d put it in exactly the right (or wrong, if you think about it) place so that someone comes and steps in it, or leans on it, or maybe it’s on the expensive vase you just got, or smeared all over your prized collection of Muses. Yeah.

  36. I got it. I think the cat thing was a spoof. You’ll also notice that the photographer’s name was ‘Busch’. I mean, the pictures could have been real. Elephants and sea lions paint. Why not cats? True, they don’t strike me as the most artistic animals, but then again, they’re usually so aloof that they don’t strike me at all.

  39. 53-Cats often strike me. Cats are never fond of me. I’m not sure why. Dogs love me, at least most of the dogs i know. But all the cats i know hate me except my friend’s cat midnight, and she loves everybody.

  41. LOST: EMOGRL’S JULY / AUGUST ISSUE OF MUSE

suspected to be in landfill somewhere in MI, thanks to her parents tendency to throw out any mail that she doesnt get to first.

so if youre by chance ever walking through a landfill in MI, and you come across the mag, plz return it to its rightful owner. she is so distraught over its disappearance that she doesnt particularly care if its a bit smelly.

That’s a link to an article on them on the BBC news site. It nas some pretty cool pictures.

If it’s zapped, just Google “new crab species hair.” That worked for me. Adding “BBC” would probably make searching easier.

  57. I got it a few days ago, and overall it was pretty good. I thought the article on the beach weed on the southern East Coast was kind of dissappointing, though- it seemed to have about three sentences which it repeated in varying orders, and not very much details (for instance, “they” are trying to prevent/remove it, but it doesn’t tell us much about whom “they” are or what they are doing now, aside from experimenting with chemicals and that stuff). I liked the Jackson Pollock (sp) article, the article about the swimmer, and the contest stuff.. and the painting cat article, although I’m kind of confused- I’m fairly sure it was a spoof, or most of it, especially the bit about analyzing the edges, but that they had a book to find more about it? And I find the hairy crabs really cute.

    Pie 0

  58. Has anyone noticed that it had a guest editor? She Who Must Not Be Named was on vacation. If it seemed different from the usual Muse, that may be why.

    Squid 0
  59. 84 (OEAD)- Ah, yes, I did hear about that. Seemed pretty Muse-ish to me, though. No real big changes.

83 (Lizzie)- The cat thing was a spoof. I own that book, and it’s hilarious, but it’s also a spoof. Froody, tho’.

Yaay! I’m not out of my mind for thinking hairy crabs are cute! *runs off to cuddle hairy crab*

  60. 84- yeah, I noticed while reading the lists of editors like I always do that the top name was different..
85- okay, that’s good, then.. although I think that there have been people who’ve trained their cats to slap paint on paper..
I don’t know why the crabs are so cute.. I guess it’s the hair.. they’re just adorable, somehow..

    Pie 0

  61. Yay! I got my issue yesterday. My Muse usually arrives much earlier, but oh well. I’m just glad it came.

I agree, the hairy crabs are cute. I want to touch one! I did think Bo looked slightly different in this issue’s KoKo&Company, but maybe that’s just because I’ve never seen her that upset. As always, the whole issue was fantastic, but I think the cannibal article was my favorite. I also enjoyed the one about cats painting, even if it was a spoof. The article about awari was particularly interesting to me since I used to play mancala a lot and the games seem similar.

78 – I read in a magazine a few weeks ago that there was a man (I think his name was Armin Meiwes) who found a willing victim and ate him, so there has been at least one real human cannibal. Eep!
