  1. This topic just popped into my head. I have no idea whether Musers are interested in birds at all. Still, we have to start somewhere. Let’s see how it, well, flies.

  2. I don’t want Soccer,I want Zoo Tycoom.

Zoo Tycoon 1 ius better than 2. My stratity is to use the shift 4 chreat ast the begining of the game, where there is nofencing to break. Then, when I have a frew million, start the game. I like to do the ocean map,, its good ffor Poalr Bears, peiguins and Saltie Crocs. though not so good for White Negal and Bengal tigers. Its also geat for lions: They can’t espcpae with the moat in the way.

Zoo Tycoon is fun. Did you know on zoo tycoon one you can get mermaids and unicorns? Funfullness.

And now so this doesn’t get zapped: Soccer is fun. Zoo Tycoon is fun too. I was playing it the day before yesterday…

  7. You named a dinosaur after me? Why thank you I am honored.

I like soccer as a topic. Soccer is a great sport, though I have never been on a team nor am I good at it nor am I even properly aquainted with all the rules. I just like running around and kicking the ball.

I also like that it’s such a low-scoring game. It makes it all so much more intense and high-stakes, you know? I mean, it’s not like in basketball where you can score hundreds (well maybe not hundreds) of times. One single goal is a huge difference.

The World Cup has been lots of fun to watch. I’ve already posted all my opinions about it, though.

  9. Clearly soccer isn’t working. We need a topic to bring this thread into focus. (That’s the point: it’s supposed to be non-random) Any suggestions? I was thinking about birds–not sure why, just a whim. Birds, anyone? Or..?

  12. Birds is good for me! Then again, I can ramble on about nearly any topic you throw at me, so I’m not much of a judge. Other ideas: teaching, things you do when you’re bored, painting.

Birds are cool, though. I like hummingbirds, but woodpeckers and quail make me laugh sometimes. Parrots are amzingly intelligent.

  13. Can we change back to Zoo Tycoon? I like it. I liked how in #1 you could do dinosours– and by the way, why isn’t there one named for me? I’m deeply hurt!– and sea animals.
What JD and I liked to do sometimes was this:
Build a really good zoo, one with lots of dino exhibits, and lots of guests, I’m talding like five hundred. When you get bored, let all the animals and dinos out of their exhibits. Fence off the zoo entrance so no one can leave.Watch the animals ravage the guests. Dinosaurs will eat each other. It’s suprisingly funny.
Then, when you finish, exit without saving so that it all goes back to normal.
I like to use the Grassland Zoos. They aren’t as confusing as the ones with themes.

  15. I birdwatch a lot, with my mom- I probably have more than 200 species on my life-list. We went down to the marina yesterday and saw a lot of pelicans, gulls, terns, cormerants, house finches, savannah sparrows (more heard than seen), an immature surf scoter.. not bad, considering that it’s not migration or anything (nesting season)- we usually see a lot more, but we usually come here (I’m in CA) in July instead of June..

What do you think about the ivory-billed woodpeckers? there was that period in which everyone agreed that yes, it was an ivory-billed in the video and stuff, but now Sibley and some others are saying it was just a pileated in a different position..

  17. To me, its easier to do the ocean map. Animals can’t escpae: With the expcetions of the combined exhbits. I had a polar bear escape, but I put ihim back in the exhibitand sold him. Then I quit without saving.

I would try that, Violetfire, but I’m too much of a wussie. can’t stand to seeguests scream.

  23. A biologist I know once studied hummingbirds for a project. She didn’t hurt them–just held them and fed them from a dish of sugar water and let them go. She said, “They weigh less than nothing. They’re lighter than air. And when they drink, their little tongues shoot out, phthwwwp!” (A hummingbird’s tongue is longer than its body.)

  24. Zoo Tycoon rocks. You get mermaids by dropping mermaid statues into the water. Name an exhit “Xanadu” to unlock unicorns. There this other thing i cant spell that turns all dino poo into rocks.
On another note, hummingbirds rock 28-cool. You cant get birds in zoo tycoon though.

  32. 28- wow, I didn’t know that about hummingbirds.
There was a hummingbird nest in a tree in my backyard. We watched it through binoculars. We got to see the chicks when they hatched…it was so cool!! They were teeny.

Every year around spring, we start getting woken up in th morning by this loud clanging in the chimney. Every year some rather confused woodpecker (I often wonder if it’s the same on every time) flies into out chimney and tries to hollow out a nest in there, despite the fact that it is quite clearly metal, not wood. And it just keeps coming back. Every morning. Every year.

  33. I missed the Architecture topic. That will teach me to leave Museblog.

I wish there were more birds in big cities. There are mostly pidgeons and the rare robin in our yard, although we had morning (mourning?) doves a few years ago.

A while ago, my family was really involved in protecting birds of prey who live in the cities. We got up really early and went to band (for tracking) some baby falcons quite a few times.

  34. A bird has made a nest in the window of my parents’ bathroom. It’s one of those windows that cranks open, and doesn’t go up and down but pivots outwards. They knocked the nest down twice, but those tenacious little birdies built it again. Now there’s an egg in the nest, so no way are they knocking it down this time.

  39. bird banding is when licenced people set up traps(usually mist nets???) to capture birds. The birds are taken out of the traps, and a lightweight metal band is placed on their leg. All sorts of things are recorded, such as wingspan and age. The birds are then let go, unharmed. It is done for purely scientific reasons, and it helps ornothologists find out about migration. You also (when you are in America) get to hold the bird. That is my favorite part!!

Sorry for that lecture!! Bird banding is really fun!!

  44. We went to the Aviary today, and we got there right at feeding time! We got to throw live crickets in the air and the birds would swoop down and catch them mid-air and eat them. We could also hold live mealworms up in the air and the birds would fly down and eat them from our fingers! It was so much fun!

    Pie 0

  45. Where I birdband, we don’t usually do birds of prey, but that may be because we are a sort of small operation, or because the mist nets are not quite sturdy enough…

  49. Once, we went to Sea World, and we went to the manta ray exhibit (it was like a big floor-level tank that was open on top) and it was feeding time, and the zookeeper was doing a demonstration on feeding them, and he chose JS and I to try it! (Probably because we were all of, like, six and eight and were wearing matching shirts) It was really cool! Their mouths were like vacuums, almost, because to feed ’em, you held a little fish between two fingers and put your hand in the water. Then a ray would come along and suck it away and eat it whole. They don’t have teeth. Plus, there was this REALLY big one, and when it ate from you it almost sucked in your whole hand! It was really cool.

  50. Rays are the only fish I know that will come up to you and make friends. I always find it slightly unnerving when one of these flat pointy things that looks like a failed experiment in jet propulsion wafts up to the side of the tank and says “hello”. Sure, you wave at it, make cooing noises, maybe tickle it on the spine, but your brain still says “It’s a FISH…………..”.

  51. I don’t live in PA, I just liked the name Ruffled Grouse. I think I saw one on a Christmas Bird Count. I’ve never been to an aviary before. It sounds really cool!!!
We get some barn swallows, tree swallows, catbirds, bluejays, robins, house wrens, different sparrow species, goldfinches, chickadees, brown thrashers(that is where I got the closeup of the scary yet hypnotic yellow eyes), yellow-throated warblers(and other warblers too). I think they get kingbirds, and few years ago there was a hummingbird. This list could go on and on, but I am probably boring you stiff. I know I am forgetting really ovious species, but it is early, and I am tired, and I can’t remember everything right now.

  52. (70) Once I was scuba diving and a remora- No wait. Was it a remora? Yes. A remora swam up to me and tried to eat my hair. He snapped at the ends (I had unwisely forgotten my hair-tie). I waved him off but he still followed my group around the whole time. That’s not exactly tring to make freinds, though.

    (64) Yes. There’s a desert wildlife museum outside of town that has an aviary which is quite nice. They also have a seperate hummingbird avairy which is great! I love going in there and watching the teeny little birds swoop around and hover and chase eachother.

I agree Ruffled Grouse, it brings to mind a very funny image.

Yesterday there was a roadrunner in out backyard! We have a quailblock on top of this adobe oven, and all the quial hang out on top of and around it. Suddenly we noticed all the quial were gone, and then we saw that there was this big old roadrunner sitting on top of the quailblock!
(a quailblock is just a large cube of seed)
He was really funny and arrogant looking. He struted around a lot, scaring all the the finches and dove as well. The this alfa male quail came out and started chasing after him! It was really cool. He left, but came back to a different section of the backyard. I’m thinking I might be able to use some of the photos I got for this month’s Muse Contest.

  53. We saw one in Arazona. Or was it New Mexico?….yeah, mom says new mexico. Anywhee, the’re not that big. Warner Brothers exagerated them a lot, thay are not like small ostriches. The’re about 2 feet tall or less.

70- When we were in Florda, after we did the Sea Wold feed-the-rays thing, when we went to the beach some fishermen had accedentally caught a really pretty whhite-tan speckled ray and we got to go really close to it when they tried to get it un tangled. It was sad, cause the fishermen couldn’t get to close to it without it floping around. They didn’tt want to get stung, although me and VF ddidn’t when we were petting them. they came up to us to be peted…*sighs fondly* And the good thing about doing it when I was 8 was that I didn’t think of it as just a fish.

I was just at a friend’s house which is a Tudor built in 1917 and mine is a tudor built in 1927 and it is interesting to see how hers is more victorian looking and mine simpler. Hers is also larger with room for servants.
