An as to Pwt’s Gender, (way back in a nestie of comment 1, I believe) I have also found conclusive evidence. Care to share, Luna? (Mine was in the issue about chromosones…)

    • Luna the Lovely says:

Oh, that was one of them. The article mentioned the Y chromosome was mutating and becoming smaller, and Pwt goes, “I’m a mutant?!” or something along those lines. The other, even more conclusive clue, was in whichever mag featured a comic where Pwt was freaking out about getting sick, y’know, acting like a hypochondriac and all. At one point, in a poem, Crraw referred to Pwt as “he”. Or something along those lines, I don’t recall exactly…..

I am happy today. I got a CD (the Beatles, 1), and managed not to kill myself or anyone else while driving through the rain that continued all day two good things. It rained all day on and off, another good thing. I like rain, and a good rainy day is nice. And I had a lovely conversation on the phone, with another promised for tomorrow (which is a Saturday, more good things!).
I found myself dancing around with a huge stupid grin on my face earlier this evening.

We watched Breakfast at Tiffany’s today, most interesting. Don’t know if I’ll watch it again, but it was fun.

W, M, and O came over today. I played SceneIt with W and M and watched YouTube videos with O.
I hope I’ll be able to make more YouTube videos. Maybe I’ll become famous like the “How to be Ninja” guys. They’re going to be in a movie! No fair!

P.S: I was reading my entry from a year ago. I forgot that they did all the 9/11 stuff last year! I don’t think anything was said on the announcements today and none of my teachers mentioned it. Weird! It’s already starting to disintigrate into history, just like I said it would! ((NOTE: In reference to the entry from the previous year))

I’m typing this on my NEW laptop! I got it two days ago. There were no Macs to be found anywhere and besides, my parents wanted to go cheap. It’s a Toshiba Satellite with an Intel Core 2 Processor, 4GB memory, and 320GB hardrive. Price was $680. Not too shabby! It has a long battery life as well; probably because the battery is a removable lump on the back. I hope I’ll have it for a while!

  17. (16.1) We interpret Feather according to the values and biases of our time; the ancient Greeks may have seen him in a different light. Also, we shouldn’t rule out the question of how Feather imagines himself.

Auditions Monday and Tuesday! I talked to H today and we planned our Dream Cast (which isn’t really our dream cast, because we were trying to compose it of people who would actually try out and there were those inconvenient people who didn’t seem to fit anywhere). And then I confessed my fears of not getting a large part. I don’t show up to my best advantage at auditions, and the guest director doesn’t know me and what I can do, and it’s all high-school-stereotypes (Athenians=preps&jocks, fairies=punk-emo-goths, players=theater kids). And I mean, I’m sure I can do any and all of the above, but I don’t look the part (except for the theater kids, but the players aren’t really very major roles, except Bottom, and that’s a guy). So I fear that if I dress normally and it comes down to me and someone who looks preppy/punkemogoth, they’ll get the part. Which gives me two options: dress utterly neutral, or skew my look towards the part I want. Because I have to school, I don’t want to be utterly neutral; that’s boring, especially two days in a row. And I don’t want to skew my look towards a fairy, and then risk not getting an Athenian, or vice versa. So I’m going to be (sort of) punkemogoth Monday, and preppy(er) on Tuesday. :D
I know it’s not about how one looks, but I feel that I sort of tend to get typecast (not that I’ve been in that many plays…it’s more like I get typecast in everyday life), and I don’t want it to happen forever and ever. I’d rather be typecast as something I’m not, than as something everyone thinks I am.

Yesterday, Marching Band did our town parade, and then we were supposed to go to another town for another parade, which is fondly known as “The Hot Dog Parade.” However, Mr. O (the band director) didn’t count on the bus driver getting lost, which created the need for Mr. O to stop at a car repair shop and ask for directions. Long story short, our bus made it to the parade, but we pulled up right behind the fire truck that was in the parade, and it was last. Our trailer with all of the instruments wasn’t with us, which I suppose was good, because otherwise Mr. O would probably have made us get out and start playing. We waved out of the window at the people packing up from the parade, and it was all good fun. We got hot dogs at the end, which absolutely ruined my appetite for the rest of the day, because I had already eaten too much at lunch.

  30. Beavo says:

    Story time!

Once upon a time there was a biological male named Beavo who went to school, expecting the way he looked not to be a big deal. Not to his surprise, he got a minimal amount of stares and an even smaller amount of rude questions. He made a couple friends the first few days.

Then, on the third day, his best friend called him and told him they needed to talk. She informed him that in no way was his appearance unnoticed; in fact, every person she knew knew both his first and last name and who his friends were. She also informed him that half the school had made up their mind that he was something that didn’t belong on the earth, and, as she quoted, “wanted to beat up the fag”.

Beavo thought this was utterly ridiculous and said so, claiming that he had had death threats before (he had) and that he wasn’t worried. He lied, but just a little bit. He really wasn’t too worried (although he packed an extra heavy small flashlight in his backpack on the way to school the next morning).

His best friend also informed him, to his disappointment, that a few of his friends that had once been close had been telling people about how they “couldn’t be seen with him” anymore. So he called one of the friends and left a voice mail asking that she call him back. She did, they had a discussion, she told him that she wasn’t “into that sort of thing”, evaded his questions, and eventually told him that they “couldn’t be friends”. He told that he thought she was being extremely petty, said a couple of things his mother wouldn’t be proud of, and hung up. He was sort of sad until he realized that if they weren’t his friends now they never were in the first place.

He called a couple of other people just to make sure his best friend’s claim that every single person in his new high school knew who he was, which was confirmed many times over. He posted a short “does anyone else find this amazingly ridiculous” on a certain social networking site, logged off, and went to sleep.

    The end.

This is really really random and has nothing to do with anything: the Creative Writing teacher at my camp had a friend who worked in the maternity ward at a hospital. Since she worked there, she got to hear what everyone named their children. There were some very weird names such as: Nevaeh (“Heaven” backwards), Darling, and Nosmoking (pronounced NAHS-ma-king). The kid was named Nosmoking because his parents were very desperate and looked at the nearest sign on the wall, which, incidentally, said, “No Smoking.” Isn’t that the worst name ever?

Come on, couldn’t they have just named him John or something? Better to be utterly generic than to name your child after a No Smoking sign. Or you could name him after his father, or grandfather, or uncle, or the main character of the your favorite novel.
-sigh- I’m not sure I believe that particular story.
Darling always makes me think of Peter Pan. Wendy Darling is actually a really great name. Just “Darling” is not.

Hey, all….For the next week or so, I am going to try something serious alternative to try and get my butt in gear. That is, if I can pull it off (big if, as I’m a world-class procrastinator) I am not going to be on MB at all for around a week, because I find myself spending over 90% of my time on MB or similar outlets. For obvious reasons, this is not at all conducive to my college career, and I have a couple of big tests in slightly over a week–tests I really should have spent time studying for this weekend, but did not.

As such, because I really do not want to fail organic chem and genetics, and in the latter I do not want to rely on the vast majority of the class being numbskulls (the top 25% of the class, no matter what the actual percent grade, receive As of some sort), as with my luck, I would turn out to be in a class of geniuses, I plan to try and buckle down and get some serious studying and the like in.

If all goes well, I will wean MB and the like back in, but to such a degree as it does not dominate my life.

That all said, when I turn my computer on in the morning, my resolve will likely fail and you will see me here. Hopefully not, but…..That would not be the first instance of my telling myself I was going to do something and it falling through in less than 24 hours.

Robert I have a question for you! Or Rosanne. And Rebecca if you know the answer feel free to say something as well so I guess this should just be addressed to the GAPA(s) in general.

    How fast do cells communicate?

I mean when someone stomps on your foot you feel it what has to be near-instantaneously. And those signals have a relatively long way to go. And what about chemical versus electrical signals? Things like adrenaline seem to shoot through the body pretty fast…

How fast is this compared to, say, the speed of light?

My friends and I had a discussion about this in bio when we should have been working, and we tried looking it up on google even though the school blocks a ton of stuff, but we couldn’t find anything (well, there was something that said it was half a meter a second, but poking each other in the toes proved this couldn’t be true).

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    • Jadestone: In a recent Q&A column (Muse, May/June 2009, p. 23), the psychologist and philosopher Daniel Dennett told me that nerve cells can transmit signals as fast as 120 meters per second (500 miles per hour). I suspect that some electrochemical pathways work more slowly than that, but neurophysiology isn’t my field. Rosanne probably knows more about it.

120 meters/second is about 0.00004 percent of the speed of light.

What I /am/ depressed about is the fact that my friend just tried to kill herself again yesterday, had a seizure, is in the hospital and is being carted off to the loony bin tomorrow. For the third time. She says she didn’t mean to, and I believe her. Seriously, the drugs she’s on (ADHD, Paranoia, Depression, Anxiety and OCD) is enough to send anyone to the wacky shack. Thank God this didn’t happen last year. This year I’m holding up well, I’m pretty happy with life. Last year would have been awful.

So today. Woke up this morning with a headache. Took ibuprofin. Put one of my migraine rescue meds in my pocket in case it got worse at school.
In period one my eyes got all un-foccusy and I couldn’t really talk at all about the story because I couldn’t read it very well. But I didn’t want to miss my AP bio lab 3rd hour.

So I went to calc (2nd) and that was okay for a while, except then my eyes got worse, and so did my comprehension skills, so I was like “[snip] this is turning into a migraine”

So I got adrink of water and took the meds, but then like halfway into the period I still wasn’t feeling good. Went to bathroom to blow nose
ended up throwing up all the meds and the graham cracker I had for breakfast. But when I went back to class I didn’t feel like explaining what happened so I waited till the end of the period to ask for a pass to the nurse, because I couldn’t even read the problems that were for homework, let alone do them.

Got home around 9:45, got in bed, got out once to throw up some more but stayed there till about an hour ago. Have since managed to hold down some juice, now trying some crackers.

God I hate migraines. I thought I caught this one early enough to be able to hold down the meds this time, but uhg. I really need more rescue meds too–we’re nearly out and they’re nice to have on hand even if I can’t always keep them in. God I hate this.

It is absolute hell. I get them rather often, quite unfortunately. The only thing that offers any thought of the tiniest bit of help is complete silence, complete blackness, and some sort of magic pillow. Getting them at school is quite possibly one of the worst things I’ve had happen to me. It is the worst pain imaginable in any circumstance ever, or they can be. You have a thousand elephants standing on every square inch of your head, while at the same time your brain is rapidly expanding against the inside of your skull. A pin dropping makes your eardrums throb with pain, and a tiny light in the next room is blinding. It is really, quite truly hell on earth.

I often get them when a cold front comes in. I’m not sure why, although I assume it has something to do with barometric pressure.

It’s not much comfort but going by your description there probably isn’t very much you can do right at this moment, so please don’t put too much of a burden on yourself. As important as friends are, there are responsibilities too great for friends to bear. It took me a long time to figure that out. One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn, in fact. Since you can’t call her now, even if you can’t concentrate, it won’t hurt to go through the motions of studying. Some of it will sink in, whether you realize it or not. Maybe you can use it to channel the restlessness. It’s not being disloyal to try to focus on the work you need to do. Plus, distracting your mind from the situation might help you think about it more clearly later.

Just my thoughts of the moment, for what they’re worth. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this.

I don’t understand what makes me such a prime target for sniggers and snide comments. Well, actually, I do know. It’s because I don’t have the money (nor the desire) to buy designer clothes and try and “fit in”. Also, because I’m not as thin as a rail, like all of them. (Not trying to offend anyone who is, it’s just that all of the people who don’t like me are.)

So. The school released, on Friday, coded coordinates to the treasure, and three clues, on for each number in the coordinates. There are 10 coordinates total. My brother and I are working hard to find the buried chest.
The first clue, E = 1, we already solved. (thanks!)
The second clue, D = 6, we solved.
The third clue, J = 1, We solved.
The coded coordinates are(excluding the first two):
    (latitude) xx AB.CDEN
    (longitude) xxFG.HIJW
So, stick the numbers in and you get
    xx AB.C61N
    xx FG.HIJW
Using Google Earth, we drew a line across campus where xx.x61x occurred. We went to one spot on the line, in the woods where the movie of the buried chest was taken, and looked around.
We started near a faculty’s house. Coincidentally (not), Mr. M, who made the treasure hunt up, lives in that house. We found a bucket of dirt about the same size as the chest, 25 feet behind their house, on the line. A stick was next to the bucket, pointing left. Going left, we found BUMPY DIRT. Right on the xx.x63x line. As we went back to our dorms (this was an hour ago, there wasn’t enough light left), we saw a SOMEONE (coughmr.mcough) looking out the house’s window. We waved, and Mr. M closed the curtains.
Obviously, we know where the chest is. Tomorrow is a Sunday, no one will be around, we can dig up the chest and keep it until the combination lock clues are released. Yay!

So today at lunch was really scary. I came up to our regular table and my friend was sitting there, looking all woozy. Her eyes were crossing in and out, which was a bit weird. I asked what was wrong, and she said, “I have a really bad headache and there are two of you.” I commanded her to drink some water and eat her sandwich, because I was worried sha might be dehydrated. She opened her lunchbox and goes, “All right! My mom packed me TWO sandwiches!” Then she kept complaining that she couldn’t see anything, how she kept blacking out. I was really nervous then, because I thought she was having a seizure. Finally, my other friend dragged her to the nurse’s office, where she started throwing up and it turned out she had a disturbingly high temperaure.

I was going to post this on the Just Friends thread but it’s so dead that I think I’ll put it here.

WARNING: LONG POST AHEAD! Still, please try to read it… :)

My friend H and I were really close last year. Like best friends type of close. She’s just about the only friend that really kept in touch with me throughout the entire summer, and so I expected us to be BFFs as soon as we got back to school, right? Wrong. I get back, and immediately discover that, although I am in almost all of her classes, another girl, D, is also in all of our classes. Although I have no problem with D, she is one of the ringleaders of the so called “popular” group in our grade and therefore we don’t really spend that much time together as I am not considered popular. (I don’t mean offense to D, but just picture your stereotypical blond girl, and that’s basically what she looks like. Picture perfect hair, face, etc. She’s actually pretty smart, but that’s beyond the point…)

Anyway, H has always been on the fringe of the popular group but spent most of her time with us last year, and now all of a sudden she’s spending all her time with the popular girls and D and basically ignoring the rest of us like we never were her friend. I mean, she’s still talking to me (occasionally) but she rarely talks to some of our other friends and never spends time with us when D and her girls are around. I’ve even heard her backstabbing this really good friend of ours…

Now, a bunch of the girls who are my friends are making a huge deal of this, and to tell you the truth, I don’t want to do that because I feel like H should have the right to be friends with whoever she wants to, and we can’t control that. However, I do think that she shouldn’t totally ignore the rest of us like we’re not even her friends anymore – especially since we were so close last year! I know, I know what you’re thinking. Friends change, stuff happens, right? Well, yeah, I understand that it’s likely we’ll all break apart in the end when our lives part. But it still hurts to see her like this, like we don’t even matter.

So while a bunch of my friends are spending all their time complaining about how H is so stupid to spend time with the other girls, a few of the other girls are leaving us to go and be with H all the time and basically following her lead. Now I feel like either someone is being overly aggressive about the whole deal or just going with H and deserting the rest of us. I’m stuck right in the middle! And to make matters worse, my mom is right in it too, desperate to know why I decided not to have a sleepover with H a few weekends ago and instead with another good friend. I know she’s just concerned, but still!! Parents can be really annoying sometimes…

I’m sorry because I doubt that anyone can make much sense of this, but I honestly just needed to vent out my feelings and if you can give me some advice – great. If not, I totally understand your confusion, and that’s ok. Thanks for reading whether you can make sense of anything or not…

your mom is probably just concerned that you might be having problems with friends and it does look like she’s right! of course if she’s pestering you about it it’s not really helpful, but she’s just being a mom

To me it seems like H doesn’t have much interesting in being anyhting more than passing friends with you. I think you said you were 12? That sort of things does start happening when you change from elementary school to junior high and then on to high school and so on. That doesn’t really excuse her talking smack on other people though. I would let her go her way, which I think is what you’re leaning towards anyway. I would say still be friendly towards her, maybe even invite her to go somewhere with you and another friend (one who isn’t made). If she doesn’t express interest then that’s that but if you can still have fun with her then that’s something.

I actually think the main problem is your friend group complaining about this. I have OOOOOOODDLLLESSS of experience with that kind of thing and it is absolutely toxic. Although it may be therapeutic to an extent to complain about stuff like that, unless you’re actually having a discussion and not just saying “Man H is such a jerk! I hate her hair too!” or whatever then there’s no point. It makes people super paranoid and so on (for example, while I was writing that maybe you should invite H to something, I thought “but wouldn’t her friends be suspicious then?” which is really awful! Because that happens!)

tl;dr my suggestion is to remain friendly towards H and try to discourage petty insults amongst friends. also, have some choklit :(

Soccer starr- I’m not very good at giving advice, but here goes:
All friends have to split up eventually. I don’t mean that as if you two will never be friends again, but it could just be that H is trying out something different. Wait a bit and see if she and your other friends come back. If that doesn’t work, try talking to her without D and the gaggle. Explain how you feel, even though it might be hard to work up the courage. It will be worth it in the end because you’ll know if she really values your friendship or wants to move on.

Within fifteen seconds, the smoke detector went off, another fifteen or so, we were told had the room had a from to it and been inclosed, the temp would have been 500 degrees and one breath would have been fatal. Couple more seconds and those of us right in front (about 20 feet or so from the replica) could feel the heat so much that we couldn’t take it any more, and started backing up. Not easy to do in a mass crowd of people (amazing what the promise of lighting something on fire will do to draw college students), and for the next ten minutes after I could still feel the burning sensation on my skin. I mean, it was that hot, that 10 minutes after, in normal temp air, my skin still felt like it was being super heated…..

I need a laptop for school/homework. So I’m looking for one that meets my criteria:
    1. Cannot be an Apple product.
    2. Must be less than five hundred dollars (which also rules out Apple).
    3. Must have at least 120 gig hard drive.
    4. At least 2 gig memory preferred, but 1 gig would work.
    5. Screen preferably larger than 12″, but I’d be willing to have a smaller screen if that was my only option.
    6. Must have an x86 or ARM microprocessor.
    7. Must have a built-in wireless-G or wireless-N card.

The condition of the processor may seem unnecessary to some, but I’m hoping to try Chrome OS once it comes out, and those are the two families of processors Chrome is being built for. It’d be nice if I could run both Windows and Chrome (in case Chrome is too buggy at first), but I just really want to try Chrome OS. I’m a bit worried that I won’t be able to sync my iPod with Chrome OS, but that’s not a huge deal to me. I’ll still be able to use the main computer here.

Axa- Sadly, yes. Too many MBers have been taken in by the con artists with their flashy shiny things and insulting adverts.

Luna- Well, cost is a big factor, as is interface, as is organization. Macs are just so cluttered, so counterintuitive to me. Sure, Windows kinda sucks from time to time, but it’s still far better than Apple.

Gradster- So basically, if I get a Mac, I’m stuck with it, as my wallet will be deep in the negative and I won’t be able to afford a new one. That’s why Macs are so “long-lasting”, in my opinion.

Oxlin- I would agree with that, but Google hasn’t been working with Dell on Chrome OS. I suppose it would probably work, as Dell uses Intel processors, but I’m a bit wary of getting a Dell at the moment. But I do still agree that it’s the best brand.

CPM- Eh, I’m too picky to buy things straight from a store. I always have to customize my preciouses online.

I’ve built one possible option, an HP Mini 110, but the screen’s tiny (only 10.1″) and it only has 1 gig of memory. But it’s under $400, so it’s feasible. Plus it’s very portable. And has six hours of battery life.

Perhaps it’s a good thing I didn’t proofread it this morning… that probably would have been painful.

My math teacher has has absolutely genius idea that involves us getting these “review sets” on things that we haven’t covered this year. The problem types aren’t in the textbook, and we aren’t allowed to work together or get help. Oh yes, and they’re for a grade. The tests are so easy too, and I really need this to help my grade even more! In fact maybe I should just do them in my sleep! Teeheehee! [/sarcasm]

My English teacher seems to be under the impression that everyone works best with music playing. He puts music on at every moment available, especially when we’re writing (and therefore supposed to be concentrating). I know that music helps some people, but it makes it extremely difficult for me to concetrate, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Wouldn’t it be easier for him to just tell people they can bring their ipods and listen to that while they work?
In fact, today we were doing writing test prep, and people were brainstorming for the topic “effects of music.” Someone mentioned that music helps concentration, and my teacher wholeheartedly agreed and went on to talk about it for a couple minutes.
    Me: [raises hand]
    Teacher: Yeah, Abby?
Me: Well I know music helps a lot people to concentrate, but it makes it difficult for me to concentrate. So I [Teacher turns on music at top volume in the middle of my sentence, and the speaker is right next to my desk] … uh… ugh. See, I lost my train of thought completely.

I officially hate my gods cursed roommate. She has been driving me slowly crazy ever since school began. Every morning, without fail, she has managed to wake me up, either through multiple alarms, sleep button, or through just not even trying to be quiet while she’s up and about getting ready.

So, starting a week ago, I got ear plugs, in the hopes that this would help. It helps, at best, 50% of the time. Doesn’t do much for the alarm, but if I somehow managed to sleep through hers, it does fairly well for her other noises.

Then, starting yesterday morning, six bloody am, her phone rings. And rings. And rings. She crawls down from the top bunk, retrieves it from under my bed where it fell, shuts the alarm off, and CRAWLS BACK INTO HER OWN BED WHERE SHE PROCEEDS TO GO BACK TO SLEEP UNTIL 7 am. While I, meanwhile, am cursing the day her parentsgrandparents met, as I try (and fail) to return to sleep.

So, this morning, same thing. Except at 6:15 I give up hope of going back to sleep, and am now furiously typing on my computer, which types most deliciously loudly when I am mad.

And also going about my morning business not trying to be quiet, although not particularly trying to be extra loud either. I almost hope she complains about me not trying to be quiet, because I”m fairly sure if she does, I will snap and laugh maniacally and point out that she is sure as heck not one to talk, as she’s been waking me up every blasted morning for the entire semester.

What really bugs me about her, though, is why set your phone to go off at 6 am, if you have no intention of getting up until 7? What purpose does that serve? I mean, I get she’s probably not deliberately trying to be loud in the morning (doesn’t change the fact that she is), but setting her alarm for significantly earlier than she plans to get up? Ok, fine, do that if you’re in a single room and don’t have a roommate or anyone else to disturb, but show a little bit of respect when you’re sharing a room.

I made it a point last year that, no matter how tired I was, I did NOT use my snooze button if I knew my roomie was sleeping. Admittedly, it was very rare that I got up before her, but…..still.

I just remember there being a scribble in the book by Harry/Ron saying that Snape had obviously not read it, and then later noticing in PoA that Snape (incorrectly) stated they were more common in Mongolia.

Random thought for the day, for anyones who might possibly be interested. JK Rowling has (officially, not an impostor) got a twitter account.

Now, although I’ve always said I thought twitter was stupid and never got the point….Well, let’s just say that is a twitter I intend to follow, even if she doesn’t intend to post much. Her username is jk_rowling, in case you were wondering.

haha I totally sympathize, miyavi (a musician) got one too and I’m like UGH TWITTER but still feel compelled to follow it

I’ve found that twitter is mostly “older” people who thinking they’re hip to those Internet trends or whatever. Lots of politicians have twitter account lol

the only time it was ever useful to me was when I was following the election fallout in Iran this summer and cnn was being totally USELESS

Well, yet another test grade is posted. That genetics test that I was especially freaked about? You know, because it was a 15 question test (mixture of multiple choice/short answer type) worth 238 points?

Turns out it didn’t go quite as horrible as I feared. In fact, most people would probably actually deem the grade that I got on it quite good. I got 204/238, so an 85.7%. Yes, I’m actually disappointed. What can I say? I’m a perfectionist. Anything less than 90 isn’t good enough.

However, it is probably technically an A, as he employs this most ridiculous curve, where the top 25% of overall scores in the class get an A. So, if 75% scored below 50% on the test, a 51% and up would, technically, be an A. Seriously, that’s just moronic.

But, yeah, anyway, it’s not near as bad as I feared, and is actually pretty decent, so I should just shut up and be happy, shouldn’t I?

  210. Yes, Luna, be happy!! I know for some that’s easier said than done. But it’s probably a good thing to practice. Just don’t be a perfectionist about it :)
