International Month of Tales, Sagas, Myths, and Legends; Chapter 3

For 1001 nights, Scheherazade enthralled King Shahryar with her inexhaustible stream of tales, sagas, myths, and legends. In binary notation, 1001 is nine, the number of the Muses. Coincidence, you say? Well, it is certainly not a coincidence that another chapter of the monthly Random thread is here to enthrall you.

Continued from Chapter 2.

Hi… great picture! Okay, prepare for cluelessness, but what is all that about Schehed (gave up trying to pronounce it) and King Shahryar?

    • (3) Kokopelli52: It’s the framing story of the collection of tales known in English as the “Thousand and One Nights” or the “Arabian Nights.” Shahryar’s wife betrayed him, so he decided to take revenge against all women by marrying a new one every night and beheading her in the morning.

After this had gone on for a while, Scheherazade (also spelled Shahrazad) volunteered to be one of his victims. She “had perused the books, annals and legends of preceding Kings, and the stories, examples and instances of by gone men and things; indeed it was said that she had collected a thousand books of histories relating to antique races and departed rulers. She had perused the works of the poets and knew them by heart; she had studied philosophy and the sciences, arts and accomplishments; and she was pleasant and polite, wise and witty, well read and well bred.” (Clearly, a Muser.)

She put her learning to good use: On the night before her scheduled execution, she started telling Shahryar a long story. Just as she was getting to the most exciting part, however, she said she was too sleepy to continue and would have to go to bed. Too bad about that beheading-in-the-morning business… Hooked, the King decided to keep her alive for another night to hear how the story ended. But as soon as Scheherazade finished that story, she said it reminded her of another one and started telling him that story — and again broke off in the middle. Shahryar spared her again, and she pulled the same trick the next night.

Gradually, Shahryar forgot his plan to behead Scheherazade. By the 1001st night, he was utterly smitten with her and made her his permanent queen. Meanwhile, her stories had restored him to sanity and made him a wise, kind king.

(The symphonic suite “Scheherazade” by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakoff does a perfect job of evoking the story of Scheherazade and some of her tales. You’d probably recognize it if you heard it.)

    • Piggy, your pies indeed provided a critical turn of inspiration. In fact, you provided a double inspiration, since I already had chocolate trees in the back of my mind, courtesy of the H&H, while I was searching through scads of pictures of Persian miniatures, after we decided that would be the approach. I had the background more or less laid out, but I hadn’t yet found the right path to Muserliness. Then I thought, “you know, some of the flowering branches in the thumbnails remind me of something…” I had to redraw them, as the emoticon files were too small to work with, but they are unquestionably your pies.

So it appears we’ll be paying 130 bucks (130 bucks my family doesn’t really have at the moment) more for a bigger screen, while taking away most of the features I liked in my aforementioned netbook. No webcam, no Bluetooth, worse battery life. And all because my dad thinks a small screen would somehow diminish the lifespan of a computer. *numblegrumble*

    • Luna the Lovely says:

Um, personally I like a decent sized screen, but I don’t see how if you are willing to settle for smaller that is going to affect the lifespan of the computer in any way. I mean, the type of computer (Mac vs. PC), for instance, is a lot more meaningful in terms of lifespan then, say, screensize. I just don’t see how screensize is going to make any difference one way or the other in the lifespan.

But no webcam and no Bluetooth? Yeep. Trying to imagine how I would function. I mean, webcam is the only way I can take stupid pictures of myself on my computer, as well as stupid videos. And Bluetooth is what allows me to upload pics from my cell phone without incurring any sort of data charges on it, and bluetooth is also what allows me to download free ringtones to my cell. That is, I can create a ringtone on my computer, and bluetooth it to my cell free of any charges…..I now have HP ringtones, instead of the basic stupid ringtones AT&T gives you.

Bluetooth also allows me to use my wireless mouse and keyboard my dad got me, that I actually almost never use. Although, I am using my wireless keyboard right now…..Cuz then I can prop my feet up on my desk where my computer is, and be sitting three feet away from it with the keyboard in my lap, while typing……Yes, I’m weird.

As for battery life…..I think mine in theory is supposed to be 3 hrs, but I almost never use it anywhere when it’s not plugged into the wall, so….. Of course, I totally understand wanting a long battery life if you are envisioning using it in the car/airplanes/other places with no electric outlet.

Attention all y’all who live in or have visited Washington, D.C. (which obviously includes RoCoo): I am visiting DC next Tuesday for my AP U.S. History class. As a group of thirty students we will go to Arlington and all the war/presidential memorials. During the afternoon we will be able to break into smaller groups of about five students and go anywhere we want on the National Mall for several hours. I am wondering which museum/place people find the most interesting. I’ve been to DC before, so I know I don’t want to go to the Natural History Museum, the Archives, or the Holocaust Museum again. I think I might want to go to the Air & Space Museum, the American History Museum, or the National Art Gallery, but I’m not sure. Where would any of you suggest as a good museum for a group of five high school students to explore for four-ish hours next Tuesday?

Ah, yes, anyway. Ummm, let’s see, what did we do? Uh, we went to see the Lincoln Memorial (not a museum, I know), Washington Monument (’twas fun), toured the Capitol building (they had lots of stuff to see, there, rather museumish, if I remember rightly), and of course, we went to some, at least, of the Smithsonian museums/exhibits. Natural History Museum, me thinks, Air & space, whichever one’s got all the rocks (dad used to be a geologist, he finds rocks fascinating. ), and probably elsewhere I’ve forgotten. hehe, sorry, ’twas a LONG time ago. Over 10 years, y’know.

I do remember sitting outside the Smithsonian watching a squirrel digging up bulbs in the flower garden, and then he walked over to the road–and I kid you not–he very deliberately looked both ways before proceeding to cross the street. it was quite amusing.

      • The cafeteria at the Museum of the American Indian is my favorite place to eat on the Mall. It’s a food court with different regional styles of (more or less) traditional American Indian foods. Best of all (when they have it), is the pumpkin soup with puffed wild rice.

It’s worth checking online to see what current exhibits are, even for those museums you’ve visited before. The National Gallery’s permanent collection also has some wonderful pieces. (I’ve been revisiting some of them since I was six years old.) Then there’s the Freer Gallery, which has Asian, Middle Eastern, and 19th-century American art.

It doesn’t serve Native American dishes for the most part, but the ingredients all are native to the Western Hemisphere and represent different geographic regions.

If I could travel in time back to the year 1400 and wanted to eat well, I’d definitely pick North or Central American instead of Europe. Think of all the great ingredients they had here: corn, tomatoes, potatoes, chili peppers, squashes, chocolate…

Ok, at the end of spanish today we were supposed to compose a paragraph in spanish describing a famous person, using our limited vocabulary/grammar/etc. The other students were supposed to guess who you were describing.

So, is the following really so hard that it’s not surprising that only one kid out of about 20 had a clue? I thought it was pretty obvious, most of it was extraneous info, and the first two sentences I thought were a dead giveaway.

    ¿Quíen es?

Es un escritor muy famoso. Ella es inglesa. Tiene tres hijos (dos hijas y un hijo). Ella es rubia y muy inteligente. Sus cumpleaños es treinta y undo de julio.

Only one person guessed it, and he butchered the pronunciation…..The prof then went, “——- ———-? I don’t know who that is….”

I gave her a look of utter disbelief (yes, I’m afraid I probably did), and went (in a tone of utter disbelief), “The ——- ——– series?”

Prof: “Oh, —— ——-, I’ve heard of that/those. [she even may have said she read ’em]’ She also said something along the lines of not realizing that was the name of the author.

Yeah, you all do have an advantage over my spanish classmates, as you know how I think (and what I think about) a heck of a lot better than any of them. That is, y’all know I”m madly obsessed with all things HP, and nobody in spanish knows that at all.

I guessed it but only because I know her birthday. Knowing she’s a famous, blonde, smart british author is rather vague and I didn’t know anything about her kids.

Yeah, it is a bit vague, I s’pose–my current vocab is rather limited.

For me, though, famous (female) british author sorta seems a dead giveaway, but that might just be because I eat, sleep, and breathe HP. I almost listed the names of the kids, but I figured I was already going to sound geeky (obsessed) enough, as it was…..

I want to change my name, even though I know it would probably make things a little confusing around here for a while, I really want something that would be more permanent – I mean, soccer starr is ok but now I think it’s pretty stupid (I’ve always thought it was, actually). I guess I really hope that I’ll be on MB for a while so I want a name that will always fit…any suggestions? I’m trying to think of something original and funny!!

Is there anyone who can explain derivatives (Precal) to me in a way that makes more sense than a textbook, please? :(

        Aren’t derivatives calculus?

        • As I recall, precalculus classes introduce the general concept of a derivative as a limit of { ( f(a) – f(b) ) over (a – b) } as (a – b) gets smaller and smaller. That’s as far as they go with it.

I learned how to do derivatives of polynomials for Scholastic Bowl, but I’m not doing calculus until next semester (long story). I never really took precalc, because my school’s precalc class was 80% review and 20% trig that I could learn more of in an online class.

Yes, they are calculus, but as my teacher keeps reminding us, “This is HONORS precalculus! Don’t whine! I’m not a hand-holder!”
We’ve gotten to calculating derivatives and using them to find local maxiumums.

Finding maximums… Isn’t that why graphing calculators were invented? (In general, I find that math teamers will believe whatever their TI-89s say, regardless of accuracy.)

That depends….In my calc class last year, we weren’t allowed calculators, we had to do it all with pencil and paper and in our heads.

Yes, I know. I just find it amusing how much people who are perfectly capable of doing problems on their own rely on calculators. Today during a math meet, there was a controversy over the answer to a problem because one person’s TI-84 gave a different answer than another person’s TI-89. I did the problem in my head and got the same answer as one of the calculators. I’m not sure which answer was right. (The problem was actually pretty simple, but it was formatted really badly leading to order of operations confusion. The people doing writing the tests need to stop using Word to typeset them. LaTeX exists for a reason.)

Oh, I didn’t see your comment before I posted.
A derivative is a measure of how a function is changing at a specific point. Let’s say you ride a bike down and back up a hill. Your speed will change depending on where you are along your route, right? When you’ve finished though, your average speed won’t give a good description of your ride (you could’ve been riding along a flat surface at a constant speed). Plugging an X (say, 2 seconds) value into your equation will yield a Y value. This is your speed at X (2 seconds). Finding the derivative of that point, (X,Y), will also tell you how your speed was changing at that exact time.
The derivative is the rate of change of a function at a single point. Does that make sense?
You’ve been using it to find local maxima and minima because these places will have a rate of change of zero.
Is that helpful? Should I explain how tangent lines are involved too?

Robert’s explanation works very well for Precalc, if that’s as far as you need to go. If you don’t understand, please ask again- I’ve had trouble with math (Although dropping from AP to honors isn’t really big trouble), so I’m usually happy to help explain things!

Woo, Messenger did its last Mercury flyby yesterday and the pix are awesome!

I did my comedy routine today and the teacher said it was nearly perfect. The kids laughed for every single joke.

    Here’s how it went:

“I wish I knew more cool people. A lot of my online friends know cool people. Some of them even get E-MAILS from exiled foreign ROYALTY asking for MONEY! I wish that could happen to ME!

“Another one of my online friends knows a guy who builds missiles for the Air Force. Since his friend is so smart, he invited him over to help him set his VCR. Well, the friend spent two hours working on it, and finally came out and said ‘Darn, I’m a rocket scientist and I can’t figure out how to set this VCR!’

“I guess the coolest people I know are my family. Once, I went to this summer camp with my little brother J, and we all got Native American names. J’s name was ‘Boy With Eyes The Color Of Sky In Summer’. My name was ‘Girl With Eyes The Color Of Raging Infected Toenail’.

“My other brother, P (They’re twins), is pretty cool, too. When we had to turn all our power off for Earth Hour, my dad was complaining ‘But I wanted to watch *John Adams*!’ So P told him ‘Well, Dad, now you can LIVE like John Adams!’

“My dad’s pretty cool himself. When my mom was in the hospital because my brothers were going to be born, he took me sightseeing all over the City. One day, we went to the Bronx Zoo and we decided to visit the Bat House. So we went in, and my dad walked right into a wall. ‘Cause, you know, it’s the Bat House. My dad dragged me out of the Bat House and up to this security guard who was outside, and he went ‘I can’t see a thing in there, it’s too dark!’. So the guard looked at my dad and said ‘That’s the way the bats like it, sir.’

“So that’s my dad, one of the few cool people who I do know. All of those stories were true except for one.”

It’s 12:00, and we just got back from Yo-Yo Ma. It was O.K. I wish we had had better seats. In the mezzanine, the concert just looked like it was on T.V.
I’m terribly jealous of A.P. He’s good at everything. Better than me at everything, I should say. Plus he got to sit in the second row at Yo-Yo Ma. We sat right behind his parents. I think I’ll always be jealouse of him, which is a shame. Nobody else seems to be.
I came home from school early today because I had a terrible sinus headache. Bleh. I got to take a nap, though!

Today was interesting. Gettysburg has moved up on my list of places to explore……yesss, I like this plan.

Anyway, we went to visit a friend of Mom’s who we haven’t seen in ages. It was quite fun. Of course, I instantly got kidnapped by the her two daughters, ages 7 and 10. Why do I always fall prey to young children who want to run footraces, climb trees, pick apples, play Magical-Talking-Ponies-And-Princesses and step on mushrooms? Ah well. Perhaps it’s because I don’t resist very much and always have fun.

Tomorrow: violin lesson. Good thing I did SO much practicing this week……… *hides*
