Sim Stuff and Computer Games in General

What do you love or hate about computer games? Or just wonder? Here’s a virtual place for a virtual chat about that. (Because Batman suggested a discussion about Roller Coaster Tycoon and Purple Panda proposed a general discussion about computer games.)

Could this thread be just for computer games in general? Because I have lots of stuff to chat about with computer games but they’re to simulation games. I don’t think. Is MarbleBlast Gold a simulation game?

I love computer games, but they make me feel awful sometimes. They consume your life and make you waste tons of time. But they’re so entertaining. My sister got Sims 2 and I haven’t even dared to install it on my home computer because I know if i do I will waste the last two weeks of summer.

  36. Paul Baker says:

Let me make you feel better.

The following diatribe refers to the best of the first-person shooters, flight sims, and especially open-ended fantasy titles like Oblivion.

I don’t want to claim that computer games are High Art, but they’re definitely culture, on a par with movies. The technology that goes into them is stunning. It’s not just Hollywood CGI, where the final shot is carefully planned and everything is pre-ordained. These are self-contained worlds, where, within limits, you can interact with objects and characters however you want to. And the limitations are getting less and less. In the best of them, you don’t have to stick to an obvious path, physically or metaphorically. Sure, there’s a Big Quest, but you can just ignore it if you want and go exploring. Visit the next town by bounding over the mountains instead of walking up the road. Fly over there if you can find some magic item that lets you do it. Pick flowers and sell them for cash. Be heroic. Be evil.

The point is, it’s an activity that you could never have contemplated before the computer existed. Never playing computer games is like living through Victorian times and never going for a ride on a train, or being wealthy 4000 years ago but staying clear of the new-fangled bronze axes. Sure, we can criticise the content, and the time it all takes, and the potential for obsessive behaviour, but cutting-edge technology always has its downside. I think we should be allowed to enjoy and celebrate what technology has to offer. It’s all pretty wonderful, really.

  38. Axa says:

    (30) Any reasons to back that up?

I agree with you Paul. I have little left to add on the subject except to say that video games can be just as in depth and entertaining as a book, and just as absorbing.I challenege anyone who says games are pointless drivel to play ( or at least watch someone play) high scale games such as the Final Fantsy series. The graphics are breath taking.

Games can become so much more than just a “waste of time”, as we see with FFVII; it spawned a sequel movie (Advent Children) and several spinnoff games (DIRGE OR CEREBRUS!). [/plugging]

In short, video games aren’t just two lines hitting a circle back and forth anymore. They’re full of color and life, and people who don’t know that are missing out.

  51. Paul Baker says:

46 – well, Windows mainly. More people run Windows than anything else, so if you’re going to write a game, you write it for Windows first. That gives you the best chance of getting back all the cash you poured into development. I think the situation’s changing now though, because there are lots of consoles out there, and the hardware in the latest ones is getting close to the capablities of a decent gaming PC. And they’re a LOT cheaper than a high-spec PC with a cutting-edge graphics card. Games will increasingly be developed for consoles first.

The Sims is wicked fun! I just like makeing the people and biulding the houses. From there I usualy don’t do much. But its mucho fun to observe how thick they are. Its kinda sad how you can turn off their free will….Oh well. Its still fun. Mostly when I play vid or computer games I don’t actaully try to accomplish anything, I jsut move around and act like a looney. For instance, on RuneScape (HA!), I only got to level 5 until I finally got bored with annoying people on chat. I don’t actually own any games, I jsut pay at my friends’ houses. I don’t like them that much, anyway; my computer in itself is addicting. I don’t think my parents would like it if I spent mroe time on here. Oh! My dad says none of his clients is really obsessed with video games and he’s REEEEEEALLY good. He ranks like 9th in the world or something. He plays in international competitions and stuff. It’d be scary if that became a line of work. Reminds me of that Far Side strip…
52- Macs are the paragons of computers. They rock the Earth. I can’t believe people are still screwing around with PCs. *shuddder* There’s only one down-side; you have to pay to have space on .Mac with the iWeb programme. I’m not really a Mac person, but that’s because I’ve grown up with PCs. We had to use Macs in school, so I’m fine with them, and my dad is a Linux geek and has taught me about that too. And I’m pretty sure that several people at my school (as of the 17th) will be writing their own OSs, as I am going to a school I have dubbed ‘Happy Nerd-Land’. Such is life.

Does ‘computer games’ have to be games actually played on a computer, or does it apply to the broader class of amusments which use a monitor to display an interactive story or task that one completes? Most of the strictly computer games that i play are demos i have downloaded for free and i amuse myself by escaping from the area where you’re supposed to be and seeing how long it takes until something gets messed up. For instance, in this one snowboarding demo, you’ll be on a course bordered by rocks sticking slightly up from the snow. Usually, they keep you contained on the track becuase if you so much as touch on with your board, you’ll fall and if you fall, it will put you back on the track again. Other times there’s such a steep grade that you can’t escape. However, there is the occasional gap in the stones so that, with much advance planning and presision, one can break free into the blue yonder. And it really is the blue yonder becuase once you break free, you’ll just keep boarding and boarding until you get to the end of the programmed landscape and your dude will falll screaming down and endless void of blue. It’s quite delightful. At that point, i restart the game and devise new ways of escape.
