Neotopia Rules!! Plus, it’s the only real anime I’ve ever read.
I dont believe ive ever read manga. its just another thing that seperates me out from the random mob… which is a good thing, in my opinion. who wants to be like everyone else?
I’m not even sure i know what manga is. will someone please inform me?
1 (kiki)- Oh, you poor, deprived child.
Yo, Axa! I started Naruto. It is shiny.
I’ve never really red Manga or anything… Nope, just books for dear old Jadestone.
KAMI-SAMA BE PRAISED!!!!11111ELEVEN
Thank you GAPAs. :3
You mean the only manga. ^^ Anime is the animated form.
My favorite shonen series of the moment is Naruto; favorite shojo is Ouran Koukou Host Club. xD It’s hilarious.
I could ramble here all day but I’m going to this awesome Japanese book store where i plan on buying volume 26 of Naruto IN JAPANESE OHHHHHHHH.
-rolls away-
JAPAN IS REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY COOL.
I’VE NEVER READ MANGA.
I  SUSHI!!!!
3 (FF)- Manga is usually defined as ‘Japanese comics’, which is accurate in the same way that “the Dao De Ching is the ‘Daoist Bible'” is accurate. It’s like boiling down all the complexity and variation into one phrase that’s easy for a Westerner to understand. To really get a good definition of manga, you need to read manga. Even then, there’s a lot of stuff missing because so much awesome-looking manga remains untranslated. (Since I can’t read Japanese, I don’t know how awesome it actually is. I just know that Okano-sensei can draw and is a screentone genius, and I don’t think her work has been translated. This makes me sad.)
PRAISE THE GAPAs!!! AN ANIME THREAD HAS LANDED!!!! anyone else here love megatokyo?? best comic ever. l_4rg0 |z 4\/\/3s0|\/|3!!!!
I’ve been reading Sgt. Frog (also known as Keroro Gunso?) lately and have found it amusing. Semaiden is also a personal favorite. As for anime, the only ones I’m keeping up with now are Inuyasha and Eureka 7.
Has anyone ever read the Tokyo Mew Mew books by Ikumi-Sensei? The story is pretty boring, but the artwork is so dang cute!
MegaTokyo, while not manga, is very amusing indeed. -chortle-
(2) Oh, but otaku aren’t like everyone else. Would everyone else spend insane amounts of time crafting costumes that you’ll wear for all of four days at the most? Would everyone else pour money, time, love, and various other nouns into a single thing? Would everybody else stand in blistering heat in the California sun while wearing layers of clothing, acessories, and various face paint?
The answer is no.
(4) YAAAAAAY I LOVE YOU!!! It gets a lot better later in the series. A lot. The story line becomes more complex and such, the characters have more depth…with the exception of Sakura, who will always be a useless …person. -restraint!-
I just got me volume 26 of Naruto… I can’t read most of it, but one of the saddest moments ( with admittedly the least text) I could understand and was quite pleased about that.
Does anyone want to talk about the SO AMAZINGLY COOL Hayao Miyizaki?
12 (Axa)- Yeah, I kinda wanted to throttle Sakura for a few minutes there. Annoying. Major annoying. But now I’m cursing the fact that I didn’t check volume two out from the library while I had a chance. So I guess I liked it.
I am not that otaku-ish, mostly because I’ve never heard of any good cons in Chicago and I can’t sew worth beans. (Although I have my eye on a very spiffy pair of feather earrings, which would enable me to do a Kagura cosplay. Since she’s one of my favourite characters, it is highly tempting.)
Hmm… favourite series. I have a lot. However, they’re nearly all manga, since I don’t have cable and am too cheap to buy anime. As I’m sure you have surmised, I am a rabid Inuyasha fan and swoon over the death scenes. (And, occasionally, Sesshoumaru. But usually when he’s in a death scene.) What Viz has out in English barely scrapes the surface. No one’s died yet. Thank the kami for ear-tweak. Er… also fond of Fushigi Yuugi, Ranma 1/2 (Ryoga is love), Furuba, Ruroken, what little I’ve read of Naruto… yeah. Lots. Shiny.
Speaking of Viz, I’m currently mad at them. They translate so slowly. Grr. Volume 34 of Ranma 1/2 just came out in English, and the series has been done in Japan for nearly ten years. Also, they ruin the original feeling of the manga they translate by putting the sound effects in English. They look so stupid like that. Katakana is much prettier, and they can do little glossaries at the back like they did with the most recent edition of FY. Also, they’ve put Inuyasha and Ranma left-to-right. Any true otaku, or even semi-otaku knows what a heinous crime that is.
Long post. Oh well.
#7: Yeah, I esp like inari, which is vegetarian sushi.
#13 He directed Spirited Away + Howl’s Moving Castle, right?
Finally, a thread I can actually contribute to! Somewhat.
I’ve only read two…manga? Mangas? Graphic novels? Sry. Anyways, yeah, I read the second issue of Shutterbox and the first of Fruit’s Basket. I relly liked Fruit’s Basket, for some odd reason. It just took me awhile to catch on to their sense of humour. I’d relly like to start reading the Model series, but I’m too busy reading for skool now .
13 (kiki)- Miyazaki’s awesome. :3nod: (Dunno if that code works on here. Probably not.) Spirited Away is one of my favourite movies ever.
15 (GIM)- Yep, that’s Miyazaki.
As previously stated, Furuba is schveet.
Spirited Away is one of my favorite movies, also. Have you seen Grave of the Fireflies? A wonderful movie, but heartbreaking.
17 (RL)- I don’t think so. What’s it about? I shall probably have to add it to my list of movies I desperately want to see but haven’t yet. *sigh*
(14) I hate Viz. Hatehatehate. The tranlsation they did of Naruto makes me sad. It’s “Gai-sensei” not “Master Guy” -shudder- I know they seriealize it in the American version of Shonen Jump, and that’s why it takes so long to get stuff out, but HONESTLY. In Japan, they’re on chapter…318 now, and we’re on what, 90? >_>
I’m just glad the dub is awesome and got the TVPG rating, which is amazing for Toonami.
Miyazaki has actualy done several movies, though most people mistake anything done by studio Ghibli to be Miyazaki’s work.
(17) I saw that at the library but was not strong enough to rent it. I know the plot line and what happens ( to an extent) in the end and I don’t think I can bear to watch it.
19- Yeah, like he didn’t do The Cat Returns, which was Studio Ghibli. I like the fact that their logo is a Totoro. I think Miyazaki did Whisper of the Heart, though.
(18, 20) You know from the beginning how the film will end, which helps in some ways. The story is about a teenage boy named Seita and his little sister Setsuko, who are orphaned in the bombing of their town during World War II. The children go to live their aunt for awhile, but she doesn’t want the expense of looking after them, so the two go from bad to worse as they struggle to survive on their own.
Yes, it’s very hard to watch in some places, knowing what doom awaits. It’s also very beautiful, poetic in the best sense. Though I’m not a person who cries over sad movies, this one got to me. Seita’s resourcefulness and his tenderness towards his sister are especially moving. I guess I saw it about ten years ago (it came out in 1988) — in Japanese, thank goodness — and it’s an experience I won’t ever forget.
No one can see it and continue to dismiss anime as “cartoons,” that’s for sure.
(12) You’ll be surprised, Axa. Sakura gets much better by the end of six. Hating Sakura is one of the first signs of Sasuke fangirlism you know. *gasp* Scary but its true.
(19) I…hate…the…toonami…version…of…Naruto! They all sound like complete losers! If your really like it, you would get it in japanese, like chewy_as_a_granolabar, my best friend did. It’s so much better. I’ll rant more on this later.
I’ve seen Grave of the Fireflies, and it is one of the best anime movies I’ve seen. Completely heartbreaking, but amazingly good.
Currently I read these manga:
Fruits Basket
Naruto
Tsubasa
Shaman King
Gundam Seed (Almost done w/it though)
My brother gets these, and I read them as well:
Rurouni Kenshin
Rave Master
Knights of the Zodiac
To speak on Japan, I hope to go to the one-month language course at Concordia next summer. It’s total immersion in Japanese, plus I get a high school credit.
Aren’t real manga read right to left? B/c my copy of the second issue of Shutterbox is left to right.
23 (Anata)- I don’t hate Sakura. She’s just really really annoying..
24 (GIM)- Yes, but some inane American publishers ‘flop’ them, or print them left-to-right. *coughVizcough* Grer.
I don’t think that “Japan” should be grouped in to this; there’s more to Japanese culture than cartoons, you know.
I don’t in particular care for anime or manga; I find it all to be sort of dramatised and overrated (well, the English versions, anyway), though I do look at manga occasionally. Hee hee. =P
Girl in Metal: The panels are organised in that fashion, yes, though the sentences are written from top to bottom. But lines are arranged in a right -> left format, so… yeah. =D
Well, that’s in Japan. Here in America, we read things differently, so as Pentatonikk said, some publishers flip the panels.
(23)O_o I’m on chapter 318. (Though I skimmed some…okay thre whole Chunin Exam. Hehehehe…) And she gets worse after the…oh nevermind that’s a spoiler. I could literally talk for days about what a pathetic character she is, but I won’t. xD And I am in no way a Sasuke fangirl, I like me some Kakashi. ♥
AND GASP! I like the dub, mostly because I have indeed seen the Japanese version, and was glad that it wasn’t butchered. Though there is no topping Inoue-sama’s voice work as Kakashi. -swoon-
Blah. Flopping is sort of annoying, it makes the experience weird.
23: I wish I could learn Japanese…I know how to say hello, goodbye, yes, excuse me, thank you, and pervert. Don’t even ask. However, I am more likely to learn Cantonese or Mandarin, as my stepfamily is Cantonese and my Stepgrandma speaks no english. However, according to my mom’s Japanese student, chinese characters are similar but are pronounced WAY differently.
okay, this is going to sound really stupid, but…
ASKING ALL MANGA FANS ON THIS THREAD….
assuming I have never read manga before in my life, but it sounds cool and I would like to…what titles/series should I look for/would you reccomend, and where would I find them???
28 (Otzi)-“Hentai!” XD And yes, the Japanese pirated and then adapted the Chinese writing system for their language, which means that kanji characters are similar to hanzi (they’d be the same, but the Chinese Communist Party simpified many characters to make them easier to read.) but sound completely different.
29 (also Otzi)- My library carries manga, which is shiny. The Borders and Barnes and Noble I frequent also do, and I’ve found both manga and manhua (Chinese manga) in Chinatowns before. I’m betting they also have it in comics stores, and there are probably specialty otaku shops you can get manga from as well. (None near me, though.)
Series, hmm… I started on Ranma 1/2, which is basically gender-swapping martial-arts lunacy, and very funny. It’s by Takahashi-sensei.
Fushigi Yuugi (Watase Yuu) might also be good, since it’s finished and a sensible length (18 volumes), which means you don’t have to madly await translation updates from your favourite scanlator. It’s just a good manga as well, and contains many, many, many bishounen. And some great moments. “All right! I’ll come back and give autographs later!” says Tasuki, while surrounded by scythe-wielding zombies.
I’d also say Inuyasha, just so I can have fellow fans to chat with. XP No really, (1)it’s a good manga; (2)you can watch the anime should you so choose; (3)it’s mega-popular, so you’ll most likely run into other fans in a lot of places; (4)you can make Penty happy and argue/drool with her; and (5)it has good death scenes. (Also, it has Sesshoumaru/Kagura in it, which is practically my favourite ship out of EVERYTHING. I have to drag A-C on here again so we can have our Sess/Kagu-Sess/Kik fights and bore the rest of you to tears.)
NOTICE: IT’S PROUNOUNCED MAHN-GAH, NOT MAN-GUH So you all know.
(28) Yes, kanji are derived from the Chinese characters ( which I believe are called “hanzi”, but I could be wrong) but the similarity ends there.
(29) Well, that depends. ^^ What genres do you like? And what will you accept when reading? Ruroni Kenshin is excellent and historically rich, but it can get a bit violent in places… Likewise, some series are more romantically driven, while others are just randomly slapstick. (Bobobo…I’m not going to try to remember)
It depends on you, whatever you like, there’s a manga for. xD And they’re available at most bookstores now, Borders has the best selection.
Furuba [The post went on to repeat the word “Furuba” another 9,361 times. If you think we’re going to post that, forget it. –Admin.]
Let’s talk about spam.
>____>
Cut down your name a bit, sugar.
(30) xDDD PIRATES! -imagines Japanese pirates kidnappping a kanji –
“Arrr we be stealing you, DESU!!”
“Oh no! ;___; ”
xDDD I’m so random.
I just got my first in-Japanese manga~ It will be my motivation during Japanese class, as if I’ll need any. Pff.
Yoda, you’ve heard about that obliteration dealie, right?
Spam spam spam spam… How do you say ‘spam’ in Japanese?
Rawr. Pirates. Hmm… wonder if I can convince the pierates to make a voyage to China and steal a writing system. I can certainly try.
“Spam” in Japanese? probably Spamu, as it is a brand name and not of Japanese origin.
You’re right, Otzi. Probably ‘supamu’, though, since the Japanese have no consonant blends to speak of.
The Japanese Vikings: Supamu supamu supamu supamu!
The Viewers: *obligatory laugh, as it is rip-off Python and supposed to be funny* Right then.
And I had a chat in the form of a Mysterious Apparition with the crews of the various ships. We shall see how events transpire, no?
my japanese friend likes spam. it’s rather odd.
my favorite anime is noir. it’s really cool and i love kirika and mirielle.
#29: It’s not like I’ve read a lot of it, but I would def recommend Fruit’s Basket. It’s absolutely hilarious.
#32: LOL, Someone was obviously a little bored…
They REALLY like Spam in Japan. And Mayonaise.
I heard Noir was good! Too cheep to shell out to money if I’ve never seen it though…
I luvs Fruits basket. I also watch the Naruto Anime(luvs that too).
(27)Heehee. My mistake. You only have OCKD. Which is only slightly better. *is murdered by Kakashi fans*
X_x Ah vell….
Skipping chapters, are we? Tsk tsk.
More toonami naruto anime rants:
Sakura sounds so annoying! I see why some people hate her!
And you can actually tell Naruto is voiced by a girl!
Oh yes. Kakashi sounds totally loserific. The only people who sound slightly less like losers are the bad guys!
I enjoy Fruits Basket. At first I was hesitent to read it, because I usually don’t like romances, but I found it was a good mix of genres.
(Inuyasha dub rant-y thing) Sango’s English voice actress has played Barbie. And Miroku’s did some Barbie love-interest. This is either very weird, very wrong, or very funny. Possibly all three.
Hm. A lot of us seem to have read Furuba. Let’s talk about that! Hatsuharu=♥. Thank you.
(43) Argle. I’m actually glad Naruto’s voice is female, since it was in the Japanese version ( Junko Takeuchi is SO awesome). And nothing can ever compare to Inoue’s voice for Kakashi. Ever. That said, I think it’s okay, but…just okay. I only pray Itachi’s will be awesome. Speaking of whch, I just bought a wallet with Itachi on it! It has a million pockets. Literally.
Furuba! The last two episodes were horribly sad to watch. I should catch up with the manga, but I’m too lazy to find an online viewer… TokyoPop should learn to speed up releases. >____>
I have no trouble w/the Japanese version, Axa. It’s the english I have problems with.
Aww, I think it’s really good! D: But to each their own, I suppose.
I saw the first half of..Swords of an Honorable Ruler, I believe it’s called? The third Inuyasha movie. It was amusing, and then I fell asleep.
47 (Axa)- That is because the Inuyasha anime is…eh. The movies are particularly eh. And the dub will rot your ears. I adore the manga, though. Even though Viz perpetually destroys it with English sound effects. Grer.
Y’know, sad Inuyasha geeks need a name. Besides ‘sad Inuyasha geeks’. That’s too long for the average fangirl to remember.
Haha, in the Naruto fandom, we have Narutards. My friend continually pokes fun at the Inuyasha dub by saying “TETSUAIGA RULEZ, KAGOME!!111” in a really annoying voice. It humors me.
My super, former huge Inyasha friend told me that’s it’s actually “Tessaiga” and not “Tetsuaiga”. The “tsu” was actually there to hold the “s” sound, and was mistranslated. How I hate Viz.
How about..Inugeeks? o_o I have no idea, I can’t make up fancy names. xDDD
AND I AM SO EXCITED, THE NARUTO FILLERS ARE SUPPOSED TO END AT EPISODE 200, AND THEN I GET TO SEE KAKASHI GAIDEN! YONDAIME ANIMATED AND TALKING, OMG SPLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Plus, Kakashi Gaiden was the most horribly sad thing ever.
49 (Axa)- I’ve met several Narutards. One even had a shirt proclaiming her as such.
And Viz is stupid. Extremely. I think ‘Tessaiga’ is written with a ‘tsu’ in the middle, but pronounced ‘Tessaiga’. Because of that, hundreds of stupid fangirls pronounce the sword’sname wrong. Sigh.
Fillers murder an anime, most of the time. I really, really, really prefer manga.
I have recently relized that manga (and anime) is something to be enjoy and appreciated, but NOT obsessed with. Obsession turns people into annoying fangirls.
Axa, you said in one of the earlier posts that you skipped the entire chunin exam. How could you do that? It’s really long; I don’t even think the ending has come out in english. Not to mention the fact that you would have no idea what was going on.
I finished the sixth volume of Furuba. It was dark, but I like dark…
Oooh, you don’t know the half of it. I think when a character comes back reincarnated as a Tony the Tiger look alike you just know. Fillers are evil.
Does anyone read/watch Bleach? There’s a huge fanbase, but I never got into it…
51 (ChinTsu)- I missed an entire middle section of Furuba because some idiot went and lost the only copies my library had and I’m too cheap to buy them for myself. I skipped from volume 1 to volume 7.
52 (Axa)- Even worse is when they make new characters and totally throw a wrench in canon. Grer.
I keep meaning to, but haven’t gotten around to it.
Kakashi’s birthday is on the dates to remember! I remember requesting that last year, omg. THANK YOU GAPAS!!!
54 (Axa)- I noticed that. Somehow, I knew it was your doing.
(51) Summaries. Forums. I read summaries of what happened because, truthfully, I wanted to get to the more recent chapters. I also stalked forums for some time, getting information that way. I am going back and reading things. And in response to your comment about it not being finished in English, I download the manga off of NarutoFan. One, because the Viz translation is horrid, and two because America is SO far behind, it’s laughable. -laughs-

Rosanne stole my supamu! Supamu stealer.
*Otzi remembers that she’s a vegetarian, and so would have no use for supamu*
I just sarted reading Manga on my vacation.
Does anyone know where i can get it online?
60-Webcomics! I recommend MegaTokyo. If you meant actual ordering of manga online, um…try Amazon?
59-What is supamu? Wait, better question: Do I want to know.
My favorites are Pita-Ten (always a goodie), Jing the Bandit King, MegaTokyo (obviously) and Ba-Ka-Ra-Ra, even though it’s pathologically bizarre, written by a Franco-Japanese woman and was originally written in French, never translated, uneven, and has 11 volumes of exactly 42 Aramaically-numbered pages each, with the rest numbered in Roman numerals, and I have only met one other person who has heard of it (my friend Robin, whose college roommate’s half-brother’s boss’s ex-business partner’s catsitter’s ex-girlfriend, coincidentally a coworker of my father’s cousin, wrote it. That was complicated.) Also, Ba-Ka-Ra-Ra is about lesbian Russian cheerleaders who wake up one morning able to understand Japanese and transform into horses at will. Like I said, it’s pathologically bizarre.
61-That’s incorrect. The cheerleaders transform into horses, but the yell king is a deer.
(60) It depends on the series. There are online viewers as well as direct downloads.
(61) Supamu is the romaji way of saying “spam” in Japanese, since they don’t have any dipthong-like fun sounds.
Otzi likes to say Supamu. Otzi does not like to eat Supamu, however.
read shonen jump magazine – a chapter each month from a couple different great mangas
its the big magazine in JAPAN – kind of like their version of mad or whatever.
(13) Yesssss! finally a civilized anime fan!! (which is not to say that other anime fans are uncivilized, its just that most animation for anime is not too good.)
Miyazaki is a genius. Enough said. I hate how people are always comparing him to disney, because there isno comparison whatsoever. Disney deserves to be pied in the face for eternity.
I’ve never read megatokyo. i’ve leafed through it, tho’.
For shonen jump series, i reccomend Bleach and Hunter X Hunter. They are the greatest series (aside from Miyazaki’s Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind). I have the entire Rurouni Kenshin series, and I don’t like it as much. It was good, but it got really cheezy.
I would read Shonen Jump magazine, but I don’t like most of the titles in there right now. I find Yu Gi Oh! and One Piece really (erm, how to put this politely) stupid. eheh…
WHY DOES MUSE HATE ANIME/MANGA????!!!
Maybe hate is too strong a word. At least it isn’t censored by hot pink bunnies…
I LOVE FRUIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yea, if anyone wants to know what i mean by fruit i mean fruits basket.
i’ve actually never read that series…
I stick more to shonen stuff.
(65) America’s version of Jump SUCKS. I’m sorry, but the translations are so bad…so bad… At least for Naruto. The Jump Advanced series are a lot better (Deathnote, Rurouni Kenshin)
But yeah, it’s a big magazine there, the biggest for shonen manga.
(66) LONG LIVE MIYAZAKI-SAMA. He is very much the genius.
I’m going to have to read Bleach off the internet somewhere, because I just know the translation will be botched. -shudders-
And yes, Muse does seem to dislike anime/manga. D:
Also, Furuba is/was awesome.
anime is moronic. triangle eyed figures having idiotic adventures all the while promoting consumerism and capitalist culture. Comic books, tv series, video games, clothes, school items, SILVERWARE… for god’s sake, cut this s**t out!!!
(72) o_o
Um.
Okay? Huge generalizations aren’t going to get you anywhere hun.
i detest anime. all anime. for those reasons. It’s poison, getting idiotic kids to spend their pocket money on useless bollocks that just encourage the conglomerates to continue brainwashing people.
Not to be rude or anything, but if you’re going to come here just to rag on anime and manga without any real concrete reason/evidence other than what you’ve said, you might want to stay out of this thread.
Anime means a lot to me. I will eventually get nasty about this, which I don’t want to since we’re all Musers here (cue pie) so…seriously. Cool off or leave. ):
My friend used to draw REALLY good anime. she stopped though.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.
she is trying to teach me though.
yay soooooooooo cool i wanna know how.
~agrrrfishi, Quadrant 5, Sector 4, BLAH BLAH BLAH THIS IS GETTING OLD!
umm… is anyone here?
I wish there was a more recent thread about this *sigh*
Well, I’m here, though I don’t know anythng about this subject. You could ask the GAPA for another thread, though. Or, I believe the March Disscusion Incredible Morphing Chameleon Thread had a brief topic on Nurato. It’s been a while sence there’s been a thread like this, so it is plausable they will create one.
Oops. I messed up the HTML. Sorry. If you can’t read the last bit, it says “March Disscusion Incredible Morphing Chameleon Thread had a brief topic on Nurato. It’s been a while sence there’s been a thread like this, so it is plausable they will create one.
