IAU names dwarf planet Eris
14-September-2006, Munich: The International Astronomical Union
announces the names (136199) Eris for the dwarf planet provisionally
named 2003 UB313 and Dysnomia for its moon.
The dwarf planet formerly known as 2003 UB313 received the official
designation (136199) Eris, or Eris in short, from the International
Astronomical Union on 13th September 2006. The name was accepted almost
unanimously by the Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature
(WGPSN) and the Committee for Small Body Nomenclature (CSBN).
Eris is the second dwarf planet in a sub category of objects of which
Pluto is the prototype.
The name Eris was proposed by one of the discoverers, Michael Brown
(Caltech, USA). (136199) Eris was discovered on 5th January 2005 by M.
E. Brown, C. A. Trujillo, and D. Rabinowitz at the Palomar Observatory.
Eris is a the Greek goddess of discord and strife. She stirs up jealousy
and envy to cause fighting and anger among men. At the wedding of Peleus
and Thetis, the parents of the Greek hero Achilles, all the gods with
the exception of Eris were invited, and, enraged at her exclusion, she
spitefully caused a quarrel among the goddesses that led to the Trojan war.
Eris is pronounced ee’-ris (see link 4).
Eris¹ moon, formerly known as S/2005 (2003 UB313) 1 and now known
technically as (136199) Eris I, has been named Dysnomia.
Dysnomia is the Daimon spirit of lawlessness. She is the daughter of
Eris, goddess of chaos and strife, and the counterpart to Eunomia who
puts an end to the anger of grievous strife.
The name Dysnomia was accepted unanimously by the members of the WGPSN.
The name was proposed by Mike Brown, a member of the discovery team.
The new designations have been approved by the IAU Division III
Organizing Committee and by the IAU Officers and have been announced in
IAU Circular 8747 13 September 2006.
YAY!!! First post!!! WooT!!! Chaos…..hmm…..the inhabitants of Planet Pie will have to do something about that…..
whoa……. deimos and phobos are eris’s brothers, also harmonia who died. Dont ask, its all from Wonder woman.
Taxonation with Representation!
(1) Planet Pie sounds like Eunomia.
Yay! A thread I suggested actually exists now!
I liked “Xena” better, though. Does the International Astronomical Union have a fixation on ancient Greek myths, or something? Yes, I know everyone’s going to give legitimate reasons now for the name Eris, but did they run out of happy gods?
Eris is an OK name, though.
I’m really confused now.
1) Can someone give me a list of the planets? I am lost.
2) Poor Scorpios. I mourn.
3) What the heck is that bulge on Iapetus? Does it have a name? Rupert?
Juliette,
Planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Dwarf planets: Ceres, Pluto, Eris.
Note, however, that according to the International Astronomical Union’s definition, a dwarf planet is not a planet. I’d list that among the “things most likely to change” when the IAU meets again in 2009.
I don’t really understand that. I understand that it’s a dwarf planet, though.
Okay…. This seems as good a place as ever to post something, so here goes:
I like how they are giving the dwarf planets names. It seems like a nice thing.
I COULDN’T GET ON THE MUSEBLOG YESTERDAY!!
A dwarf planet is not a planet. Okay. Yet it has the word, “planet,” in it. Oh, how I love dysfunctional (sp?) naming systems.
It’s like that New York soda-fountain drink, the egg cream, which contains no egg and no cream. You’d think astronomers would have been able to do better.
Still, in a way it’s a good compromise. People who don’t want Pluto to be a planet can think of it as a dwarf planet. People who do want it to be a planet can think of it as a dwarf planet. Everybody should be happy, no?
whydiddent they name it persephone? She is the wife of pluto, and darther of ceres.ploto and ceres are the names of the the other d.p.s
Apparently there’s already an asteroid named Proserpine, the Roman version of Persephone.
Sorry… I haven’t been on in about a week, school an’ stuff. Heh heh…
How ’bout they name one “dyslexia” ?
15- Ha. Ha. Ha. Not funny. Dyslexia is a sereious problem.
4-What’s Eunomia?
16) I know, I have many friends who have it, and have aunts and uncles who have had it.
It wasn’t supposed to be funny……. *lets injured sob escape lips*
16) As to say, I was being serious. I think that would be nice. But anyways, if you are going to go into the “you offend me” business, then it offends ME when people swear or use the Lord’s name in vain on this site. Thank you. GAPA, you should outlaw it, or put in random words in its place.
15-16-18) Dyslexia runs in my family. It skipped me, though…When my dad failed reading miserably in elementary school, his mother decided that the ‘poor little boy just wasn’t very bright’, but his dad said “No! No! Get him tested!” and lo and behold…he’s dyslexic! So are a lot of people. I think Zyka was trying to make fun of the big words they tend to name planets with. And that is all Ötzi has to say on the subject of dyslexia.
I think they should start naming the DPs after anorexic rabbits. Then we’d have a DP named Cricket.
Wow. I don’t know anybody personally who is dyslexic.
19: What??? That offends you???
[We’ve found that there are MuseBloggers of many stripes. Comments that seem harmless enough to some profoundly upset others. So we try to keep language that’s likely to offend off the blog. — Rosanne]
How bout you let Zyka think for herself?
22) I do, but its better for people now to be dyslexic because they notice more. My aunt was dyslexic and my mom would have to read her the materials in math, literature, history, science, on and on, because they didn’t catch that she was dyslexic until seventh grade, and then the *weird* doctor that treated her told her she had to crawl everywhere because the reason she was dyslexic was because she didn’t crawl when she was a baby. She was thirteen, so you can imagine the trauma she went through. Believe me, I know about dyslexia. If I wanted to make fun of the big words that people named planets after, I would have made a long list of 12-letter or more words such as “antidisestablishmentarianism.” That is a fun word.
Also, because I am a really good reader *not trying to brag* I have dealt with people who have reading problems or are dyslexic. If you want to get mad at people who make fun of dyslexia make fun of Roald Dahl.
Maybe it wouldnt be a bad idea to name a DP Dislexia. It would spread intergalatic understanding for the condition.
24) ^-^ Thank you for understanding.
Zyka, I wasn’t trying to speak for you. I was just trying to clarify things a little…
*song Why can’t we be friends? starts playing in background over the entire blog. Everybody pies each other with friendly pies. Hopefully, all is resolved*
I hope THAT wasn’t thinking for other people…
was it?
27) No, I was just kind of frustrated at the moment because everyone had posted stuff before my last thing was posted. You weren’t trying to speak for me, I know.
Again, half the problem is you can’t see or hear the person who is speaking, so all you see is words, and you add your own feelings to the words in the context, and can make it sound as if someone were joking, were serious, or somewhere in between.
Didn’t mean to say that you were speaking for me, was just in a hurry.
*all is resolved at least to me and Otzi*
Oh, and how do you do that double dot thing over your name, Otzi?
21: but wouldn’t that be making fun of anorexia?
29- Not really, more like making fun of fat rabbits that make me think my rabbit is anorexic.
this is a dyslexia therd now gapas!
Dysnomia, dyslexia, whatever.
28: you mean my Umlaut?
My computer wouldn’t make it, so I googled “umlaut”, cut and pasted an “O” with an umlaut over it, and wrote “tzi” next to it. Voila, Ötzi!
you can also get an umlaut on macs with option-u
meh. I wish I had a mac…
¨ I can’t get the O under it…
I’m going to be writing a story about Eris.
32) Yay for the great diplomatic skills of GAPA Robert Coontz!
33) Okay, umlaut. Is it okay that I don’t put one there so that I don’t have to paste it every time?
From About.com:
“Umlaut accent marks are two small dots over a letter, and in the case of the lower case i those dots replace the single dot. Umlaut accent marks are found in words like naïve.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: NA
Here’s How:
1. The umlaut accent marks are found on the upper and lower case vowels Ä ä Ë ë à ï Ö ö Ü ü Ÿ ÿ
2. On a Mac, hold down Opt while typing the letter to create characters with umlaut accent marks.
3. Under Windows hold down ALT while typing the appropriate number code on your numeric keypad to create characters with umlaut accent marks.
For Windows, the number codes for the upper case letters are:
Ä 0196
Ë 0203
à 0207
Ö 0214
Ü 0220
Ÿ 0159
For Windows, the number codes for the lower case letters are:
ä 0228
ë 0235
ï 0239
ö 0246
ü 0252
ÿ 0255
4. In HTML, to create umlaut accent marks type the & (ampersand symbol) then the letter (A, e, etc.), then the letters uml, then ; (semicolon) such as:
& euml; (no space) for ë
& Uuml; (no space) for Ü
Tips:
1. In HTML the characters with umlaut accent marks may appear smaller than surrounding text. You might want to enlarge the font for just those characters under some circumstances.
2. Under Windows, don’t use the numbers at the top of keyboard. Use the numeric keypad and be sure Num Lock is turned ON.
3. Some programs may have special keystrokes for creating diacriticals, such as umlaut accent marks. See the application manual or help files if these keystrokes don’t work for umlaut accent marks.”
Hmm, let’s try it! Ötzi
IT WORKED!!!!!! COOOOOOOOL!!!!
I shall try it again:
naïve
WOOOOOOT!!!! IT WORKED!!!!
THIS IS SO COOL!!!!!
Now you know!
Also, if you type random combos of alt and that number of digits you get some pretty cool things. Let’s try it!
↓ d ƒ ┬ Ö [ ╓
Ötzi?
sqüëëz! that was html. Let’s try mac…
