  2. I liked the article on the Catacombs in Paris. I always like the idea of exploring strange places. I liked this isue in general. I also liked the anime article because I have a lot of friends who are interested in anime and, because I’m not an anime fan myself, it was fun to see what they were talking about.

  4. i’m disappointed that muse caved and did an anime-related article, but I did like how they railed on all the stupid plots. i hope they got that out of their system now. maybe people will stop bugging them for an anime article. anime is much too boring and trite to make for an interesting article.
anyhow, i always like the halloween issues. the hagfish in particular grossed me out. i’m going to keep my eye out for “conger eel” leather in the future..

  5. 4-What the heck do you mean, caved? What the heck? Anime is an important subculture, more important than jazz was in the ’20s, more exciting than bungee jumping in lingerie and nothing else, and more intellectual than Tunc‘s baby by Stephen Hawking. Go, go eat your crust in woeful solitude in the dark edge of the hall. Wanker.

I loved the catacombs article. I loved the entire issue. I’m a quasi-cataphile, but may I say the thing about aerogel on the back page was FLAMING HOT? I love it. Lo-ove it.

    Didn’t stand by me…no way…

  6. okay, I want to go to a school where 67.5 is passing.
    x_x

Seriously, though, where does that apply? I mean, here 70+ is passing, and I believe you have to make a 75+ to get the 10 extra points for GPA for honors programs.
And also, would teachers ever let you drop a _test_ grade? I think not.. or I’d have a higher grade in Algebra and AP Human Geography than I do…

  7. 7- me too, I wonder if Paul Baker ever went cheese rolling?

6-66% in my school is passing and some techers allow us to drop a test grade. That might be because our school gets such low grades, we almost lost state aid last year. Not everyone in my school is stupid, though, my friends and I compete for good grades. This January I have to get 98% or higher on my Math A exam to beat one of my friends, she might win on that grade competition.

  8. 6-67’s a passing. Any C is a passing. But test-dropping is a no at my skool.

8-i doubt it. I said i wanted to enter and he said, “You really don’t want to enter the cheese rolling competition. You’re likely
to end up with a broken leg/neck/whatever. Stand on the sidelines and laugh. Somewhere out of range of the cheese.”

But i still want to do it. :D

  9. 9- 67’s a F. 70-74 is a D, 75-79 is a C, 80-89 is a B, and 90+ is an A.
Some of my classes drop the lowest quiz, though.

  11. Kokopelli has a neck about one millimeter thick. Feather has one that is about ten times that. How did Feather fit into his Koko costume? Theories, please, the wilder the better.

  12. Maybe Feather grew some invisible cotton and used it to make fabric to shroud his neck, arms and legs and painted thin black lines on them.

  13. Thats a weird grading system. My school, 0-59= E(F), 60-69= D, 70-79=C, 80-89= D, 90+=A. Anyway, getting back to the topic, aerogel is super cool. I love weird states of matter. Oh, and I looooovved the hagfish article. I had an eelskin changepurse once. Looking back, it seems really gross. The cosplaying article was cool. I saw spirited away with some of my friends. It gave me nightmares. Seriously, its a scary movie. The girl’s parents are turned into pigs. Oh, and Bo’s page was really good. Like always.

  14. An interesting magazine indead. Screamazon.eek sounds suprisingly parallel to Notscape.
The same day I got my muse, the person who sits across from me in health class desided to dress up as Kakashi. With the metal headband and everthing. I have no idea why. I spent almost the entire health period casting sideways glances at him and woundering how much his headband cost. My school is so interesting.

  16. 14-Feather cloned and shrank himself, then fit his slimmer clone into the outfit. OR, Feather really has a neck brace that he just took off ot wear the costume.

17-I had conger eel panties. Consider yourself lucky, my friend. Did you like Spirited Away? Because Kiki’s Delivery Service and Castle In the Sky are both less scary Studio Ghiblis.

19-Fun! I would have asked him out. On the other hand, last night I spent six hours in my Misha-san from Pita-Ten costume, which weighs fifty pounds and requires six ounces of Kitty Bubble perfume.

20-No offense, but that would mean that an ‘E’ is just an ‘F’ with a different name. Weird system. “If a cute poster is all it takes to motivate you, you probably have a really easy job. The kind robots will be doing soon.”

I liked the Math Page, too. Usually I have problems with the Math Page. I hope he does one on kakuro-the forgotten love child of sudoku. Actually, in my opinion they’re much harder.

  17. 5: you suck. Anime is the lowest of stupid brainwashing television. It’s even worse than soap operas. Bunch of angular freaks yelling about über-cheesy crap and infantile themes. If you want to watch a good tv show, go watch Family Guy. Oh, but that’s to politically challenging for you americans… You people make me sick.

Btw, I’ll post about the october issue as soon as I get it. Why does Europe have a slower delivery? We’re a much more literate continent…

  20. 24: Um.. your reply made no sense. I have no idea what you’re talking about now. I didn’t say anything about anime in #23.. 21. 22- And family guy doesn’t revolve around über-cheesy crap and infantile themes? I think it’s the stupidest show on television. I’m not arguing the point that anime shows aren’t cheesy, but they are a very large part of our culture.

  23. No, I’ve never personally gone cheese rolling. I leave it to fellow lunatics with less age and less girth. Maybe Muse should organise a special excursion. Come to England and take part in the Cheese Rolling. I think the travel costs might be a bit high, though. How about a USA championship, with heats in each state? Always supposing America can one day produce a decent cheese, that is.

  28. (22) Because Muse is published in America, oh wise one. You see, when there’s a longer distance for something to go, (ie, across the Atlantic Ocean) it takes a longer to do it. Basic scientific princible.

Pax meanse peace, which is very wise advice from our dear GAPAs. Dear FrigidSymphony, you may be very proud of your strong opinions but that really doesn’t give you any excuse to be so brutal. Hello, being liberal minded is about excepting other ideas, ya? And you consider yourself liberal, ya? So don’t be a hypocrite.
And as for everyone else, just understand that FS is mostly just kidding around, and is entitled to his own opinions.

Also, I am self-centered, immature, (As many trumpet players are those two things, we also love stereotypes… sometimes. Oh, look, there I go again, stereotyping about the amazingness of trumpet players…) and afraid of clowns. (Mostly because one stole the whipped cream off of my jell-o once…. And another reason because my sister used to have a little kid “potty training” movie that the clown sang, “Tra-la-la Boom-dee aaaay! I pull my pants awaaaaay!” and about washing your hands and stuff. It freaked me out….. And my mum thinks it funny to taunt me.)

  32. Am I the only one who thinks the Catacombs in Paris article would make an amazing thriller novel like the Davinci Code? I mean, someone could be murdered down there, and then they would have to go exploring, and meet the catiphiles (that name cracked me up, though I’m probably not spelling it correctly), and it could be very creepy with all those bones, but very historical too. And now I’m rambling. Sorry, I’m a writer, I tend to ramble alot.

  33. 22: woazer. I can completely understand why you would hate us for our government and thier actions, but that’s not the fault of we the people. The first election was stolen, and the second one, disorganized. Bush’s approval rating is at about 32%of the population right now, and the population is about 300 million. And Anime isn’t American, its Japanese. So take it up with them.

  35. first off, to julieb: Family Guy does NOT revolve around infantile themes and cheesy crap. There’s a huge amount of subtle social analysis and cultural satire. If you fail to see it, your loss.
Second, I’m half-american american. My mother is from New York. My father is all swiss. I know that bush and the republican party have extremely low popularity ratings now, but did they in 2000, when Bush gave off Clinton’s excess of funds away to his rich sleazy friends, proudly leading America into the greatest deficit EVER?? Americans were not acting like this when he invaded Iraq on the basis of weapons that never existed. So I dislike americans for not noticing sooner (unlike europeans)
Third, there’s a difference between liberal and just plain naïve, and not criticizing an atrocious government too hardly just to not appear extremist. Bush needs criticizing, and has so ever since he “won” the 2000 election. But americans were not doing their job.
Fourth, I’m a guy. Tall long haired patriotic swiss intellectual.
Fifth, there is humor to be found in my statements, but whenever I’m criticizing America, I’m usually dead serious. If you people are liberal democrats, then I’m shocked at how passive and naïve you are. You can’t just shut off all terrible things and pretend they never happened. I wonder what would happen if I were to make an analogy (and it would be accurate, I assure you) between Hitler’s Naziism and Bush’s overall policies.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  36. 50- Yeah, I’m sure. Problem is, a swiss person basing his view of america off family guy episodes is not really going to have the most clear view of what most americans think. There were a lot of people who opposed the war in Iraq before we even invaded it. My aunt and I marched in a peace rally in Washington a few years ago. Thousands of people came from around the country. You acuse people who have these sorts of views of being “passive and naïve”. What do you feel we should do? Being part of the Democratic party does not mean we have control of what our representatives do once elected. Many people strongly disagree with the decisions made, but what do we do? Organizing protests is a full time job, and unless you have time to get the warrents, talk to the police, advertise, etc you should stop complaining. Yes, during the rally I saw a sign depicting Bush in Hitler-esque clothing and pose, but the true difference between the two lies in the fact that Hitler slaughtered millions because of his personal beliefs. Most people killed in Iraq were killed by terrorists, who are much more comparable as they are also killing people because of their beliefs. I do not agree with the current administrations policies or actions, but I find it incredibly exaggerated to compare our president, the monkey that he is, to Adolf Hitler. If you wan’t to see an accurate view of American’s feelings, try reading Doonesbury comics or , omg, there’s NEWSPAPERS in America. And we have a lot of democratic liberal television, like Real Time with Bill Maher.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  37. I know there are newspapers in the states. And I don’t base my views of americans on family guy. Duh. However, it is still my opinion that the general liberal populace of america has gotten soft. If a democratic president had behaved like bush, the republicans would have been calling for impeachment years ago.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  38. “Americans were not acting like this when he invaded Iraq on the basis of weapons that never existed. So I dislike americans for not noticing sooner (unlike europeans)”

Ok, i have serious issues with that. There were plenty americans opposed to this from the beginning, but besides that your extreme generalizations are REALLY starting to bug me. What do you mean “unlike europeans”?

And really, i find it extremely narrow-minded to say “i dislike americans” regardless of the reason. You can dislike American policies, or specific americans, or even the country of america, but don’t just write off all americans like that. Most of the people i know are american, and i find them quite nice, intelligent, crazy people (hey, they’re my friends, of course they’re crazy XD).

And yeah, Hitler and Bush? Big differences. So i don’t like Bush, so i disagree with his policies and think he’s a DIRP who should have been impeached long ago BUT he is no hitler. I repeat, he is no hitler. Trust me, that is a big thing to say, and you should think before you make comparisons like that.

Ok. Rant over. And shouldn’t all this be on Hot Topics anyway?

    So who ♥ cataphiles?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  39. 50- I agree about Hitler/ Bush and probably many of your ideas, but just because there are similarities doesn’t mean they’re the same. There’s a movie on the internet somewhere, I can’t remember where, but it is comparing the Bush family to Hitler’s actions and everything he did, the similarities are scary.
“Americans not noticing sooner”? Americans have been put in jail for protesting the Bush administrtion at the Republican convention and have you heard of Cindy Sheean? (Did I spell that wrong?) Barely half the US population voted for Bush and that’s just because Kerry/Edwards wasn’t a very good alternative.
-Bush needs criticizing, I couldn’t agree more, you are welcome to join us in doing so
-the deficit, yea thats a problem but it’s us kids now that will be paying it later and as kids (young adults, under 16 yrs. old) we have no power in our gov’t and even adults have very little say in how the gov’t spends money, even the president has little power, as congress are the ones that make the budget. So don’t try to blame us musers because we don’t want a huge deficit because we will have to help pay it off.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  40. FrgidSymphony, I believe the word for your views
is EUROCENTRIC. You really don’t know what’s going on in the US. It is pretty bad over here– the deficit, the useless wars, the pointless debates on issues that should be obvious, wiretapping, CIA leakage, FEMA, rampant cronyism and bearaucracy… and the Democrats are disorganized.they tend not to have the huge reserves for campaign money that the Republicans have. I march in protests, donate my allowance to NARAL and ACLU, attend lectures, and read the newspapers and listen to NPR every day. I try first to listen and find out more about something before I decide how to act. And you are sitting there, watching us and saying we make you sick. You could either offer constructive criticism (What you think should be done about it) or help us change. But bashing helps no-one and makes everything worse.

  41. I haven’t had a chance to read all of it yet, but I have read the article about the catacombs + the one about cosplay. I’m lovin’ this issue so far. If I EVER go to Paris, I’m def going to try + sneak into the catacombs! Yeah, I figure that, if I ever end up going there, it’ll be when I’m an adult, so my parents won’t be there to say “H*** no you can’t go down there!” Wait a mo’…I’ll be an adult in less than a year… yesssssssssss……

  42. 55: I do know what goes on in the states, and I’m not bashing intelligent people who do stuff about it (like yourself), but people who are too lazy to get OFF their asses, AWAY from the latest american idol, and INTO action. And if you want my opinion, it’s moronic that a country even let it’s president get away with stuff from the beginning. Impeach the bastard. In fact, I shouldn’t be surprised, as american political history has been screwed-up and hypocritical right since the founding fathers (“let’s not tell the black people about ‘all men are equal’, ey?). It’s a sad fact that elections have become mere popularity contests – would you rather have a beer with Bush or Kerry? Isn’t it great having the Terminator as a governor? And IMO marching in protest isn’t going to help with bush unless he orders riot hoses against you (in which case you inspire much more sympathy from the rest of the world). He’s such a non-caring jerk that he doesn’t give a crap what the people think about him.
I might not know exactly how social life in the states is today, but what I see and know is enough to wonder why the Bushies were even allowed to enter the oval office.

  56. 69: Because Tolkien is actual literature and anime is just corporate commercial crap designed to brainwash kids into buying the sticker albums, playing cards, plastic action figures, and all sorts of other bull.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  57. 77 (FS)- I don’t believe you’re familiar with Miyazaki.

Or, for that matter, anime. It is not designed to brainwash kids at all. In Japan, quite a lot of anime is, in fact, made for or watched by adults, who don’t buy stickers or trading cards or action figures and still love the stories. Anime isn’t designed to sell stuff. The stuff comes after, with a successful series that the studio thinks has a chance to expand. No brainwashing occurs. I am a diehard anime fan who doesn’t own a single piece of commerical anime merchandise.

I think you may be forgetting that the article was not on anime, but on cosplaying. While they are certainly closely related, they are not the same thing. To the uninitiated, cosplaying is similar to a themed Halloween without candy. Nothing commercial about that, especially since you are making the costume.

Besides, there’s plenty of Tolkien merchandise, too. Action figures! Movies! Fanworks! Obviously, Muse was trying to advertise all this when they wrote their articles.

I think I’ve mentioned my hatred of generalizations before.

  61. I still don’t have my Muse. Fishy Canadian screening processes…*grumble* this country is communistic, mates!

  62. 84 (Phoenix)- Pobrecita.

80 (FS)- Same with anime merchandise. Anime itself is just better.

On the angular eyes/hair: None of you have seen/read much shoujo, have you? It’s all soft lines and pretty round eyes, mainly because of gender stereotyping; it’s directed at teenage girls. You need to read some good shoujo manga, which will cure you of thinking that all anime is angular.

The problem is that most of the anime shown in the States (don’t know about Switzerland) is Jump-type shounen, which gives Westerners a mistaken impression of anime. It’s less extreme with manga, but almost all of the anime shown on an easily accesed TV channel here is stuff designed sorta like Yu-gi-oh and not at all representative of the huge quantity of anime available in Japan.

  63. 85: exaggerated softness is just as bad as all the angles.

  64. 84 You didn’t get your Oct. issue yet!? How long does this screening process take? I seriously live 20 min from Canada ( not counting time to go through customs) and I got the October Muse weeks ago!
79 I agree- most American anime is pretty lousy. There’s this anime comic strip in our newspaper and it is so bad I don’t even think it should be called anime anymore.
Anyway-my favorite part of the October Muse was probably the last page, with the aerogel. It looked awesome!!! I wonder what it feels like.

  65. 87 (FS)- I have one word for you: gekiga. Which happens to be directed at adults, generally has a more ‘European’ look to it, and is drawn more realistically. Unfortunately, they’d never show it here because it’s too violent for the kiddies and adults don’t like cartoons.

If you (general term here) don’t get the sarcasm, I pity you.
