Robert’s Journey to the Heart of Musery

In mid-September, one of your Administrators spent a week hatching mischief at the Muse offices in Chicago. He took pictures.

The stately Marquette Building, home of Carus Publishing until it moves a few blocks away in January.

The entrance leads into an elevator lobby decorated with bronze images of Midwestern explorers.

Each elevator cab bears this seal and contains speakers that play Mozart. As you may have guessed by now, the Marquette Building is rather full of itself.

Muse‘s offices are on the fourteenth floor. Among many other treasures there, the archives contain copies of every issue of the magazine.

Here’s the temporary cubicle where I worked on a top-secret project you’ll see next year. To the left of the keyboard sits a copy of the very first Muse.

Samantha Sordyl (a.k.a. Samablamablous, a.k.a. Samblam, a.k.a. Sam) confers with art director John Sandford and layout guru Walter Mendoza about the November/December issue.

One night Sam and her husband, Mr. Sam, took me to a great Italian restaurant in their neighborhood.

And that’s the story, or as much of it as I’m allowed to talk about at this point.

    That is so amazingly cool.

That’s all you can discuss? THERE”S CLASSIFIED INFORMATION, THEN?!? *drools* I must venture into these mysterious offices…..once I get my liscense and can travel to Chicago….okay, that was a bad idea.

I can barely read what I’m typing…please ignore any spelling errors…..

  4. You don’t have to sneak in. Kiki just phoned Samablamablous and asked for a tour. She saw everything. Right, Kiki? I think they even fed her pie.

  10. TRUE: Brave soul Kiki visited and ate pie with Samablamablous –
without incident. I know Samablamablous. I dare not come within yards of Samablamablous and a pie.

  11. Sam and Mr. Sam. Of course. Does he work for Cricket?

I have to go and take the tour like Kiki did. I love the fact that the speakers played Mozart. Actually, the complete M-zart collection of 170 CDs arrived at our house last night, from We-Know-Not-Who. I bet if I arrive in a Muse-ish outfit, and bear bribery, and threaten, they’ll let me in.

Cool elevator seals, by the way. Bark bark.

  13. How about all the Chicagoland (ooh, mystical-I love that word) Musebloggers meet at the Marquette Building sometime for our own tour with Samablamablous? I know you’re not supposed to randomly meet people you’ve met on the internet, but this would be in a public place, and we could bring our parental units/guardians/valets/friends/etc.s along…and people have talked about a MUSE meeting. And besides-we could be the Fan Emissary! The People’s Voice!

Now, what to bribe them with-pie? I have pecan…hmmm…plotting is difficult.

  14. 25-Have it over some type of vacation like spring break or something because there’s a slim chance i might be going to chicago soon, and i’ll be able to beg extra hard if there’s a muse tour! Only problem is, i don’t know when we’re going (if at all *snibble*) Chicago’s farther away than it used to be *sigh*

  16. Oh , the images, the images! They are burned into my brain. One day, I shall visit Muse Central. I have spoken. 6000 miles is not a sufficient deterrent. I will make plans. Alas, by the time they come to fruition, Muse Central will have moved “down the road”. The phrase is ominous. I just hope that the new residence of this august publication will retain the bronze plaques. And the pie.
