Happy Thanksgiving 2009!

Has it really been a whole year since the last time we said that? It seems impossible, but logic tells us it must be so. Have a wonderful holiday, everybody*!

*Those living in countries that don’t celebrate American-style Thanksgiving should give it a try; it’s very nice. And Canadians have our permission (and wholehearted encouragement) to celebrate it again. It’s party time!

i’m gonna be a debbie downer for a second here

“Since 1970, Native Americans have gathered at noon on Cole’s Hill in Plymouth to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. Many Native Americans do not celebrate the arrival of Pilgrims and other European settlers. To them, Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of their people, the theft of their lands, and the relentless assault on their culture. Participants in the National Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native people to survive today. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection as well as a protest of the racism and oppression which Native Americans continue to experience.” (this is on a monument in Plymouth)

had to put it out there. not saying people shouldn’t have a nice time with their families. to me thanksgiving is a time to 1) be grateful for what you have and 2) a reminder to be a good person and treat others with respect and dignity.

What are other MBers doing for thanksgiving? I’m going to my aunt’s house. I’ve been sick the past two thanksgivings so I’m looking forward to it.

4- I dunno, to me Thanksgiving has absolutely nothing to do with the arrival of white settlers…probably because I read that one Muse article about the first Thanksgiving where they were like “it was probably nothing like the painting…and it didn’t happen in November…and they didn’t eat turkey…and it wasn’t actually a holiday until centuries later” and so I was like “oh, well then I might as well throw all the popular notions of Thanksgiving out the window.” And also because whenever I think of the early European settlers I think of disease and genocide and people planting tobacco instead of food and The Scarlet Letter. And those things are all kind of unpleasant to me.

Anyway, we go to my grandparents’ house now, but we never really celebrated Thanksgiving when I was a kid. In fact we were kind of anti-Thanksgiving, I think. I don’t remember specifically, but I’m sure my mother gave me all sorts of lectures about genocide and stealing the land from the indigenous people and how everyone was too lazy to grow their own food so all the Native Americans had to come and save them and look how they were repaid. Most holidays have a certain amount of that behind them for me. It’s a bit gloomy. Maybe that’s why Halloween’s my favorite. I don’t think there’s a dreadful story behind it. If there is I haven’t heard it.

4~ For me Thanksgiving is a day to be grateful for everything we have, it’s not for celebrating a bunch of pilgrims. I can completely understand how the way many people celebrate (including some of my family’s traditions) would offend native cultures though.

I’m going to go to my grandma’s house. Thanksgiving this year is going to be a HUGE deal, since her house has been fixed just in time for dinner to be there like it is every year (she had a house fire this spring). And I get to meet a cousin, Vyara, who I’ve never met before, and Stefan, who I saw last when he was a baby (he’s now about 4 I guess). So….that should be interesting. They’re my uncle’s kids, and I (and the whole family, really) has some issues with the way he raises kids. It osunds like they’re going to be hellions that may or may not speak much English. And since only their mom speaks Bulgarian….well, it’ll be interesting.
Oh, my lovely, screwed-up family. I’m grateful for them. I really am. I keep telling myself that, hopefully it’ll get easier to believe.

And I really hope I get better between now and tomorrow. One, because I’m tired of being sick, and two because I don’t want the entire family flinching away from me more than they do already. And since I usually end up seeking refuge outside in a tree or something I don’t want to get too cold while being sick, because that just sucks.

Oh well. I like Thanksgiving anyway.

yeah I think it’s just how thanksgiving is portrayed as this warm fuzzy day and love abounded between all parties involved and it’s all very pastoral and comforting. but for native american people in north america especially it’s something very different so I’m just putting that out there.

8- very true. I could write so much more, but I’m restraining myself.

fiddler — Bulgarian! That does sound interesting. Feel better! I’m often sick during this time of year too. Luckily I will be well enough to eat my weight in potatoes if all goes according to plan.

For Thanksgiving, my sis and I are attempting to cook a proper turkey dinner. I’ve been delegated the task of making the pumpkin pie and preparing the fruit salad (whipped cream w/ canned fruit salad, banana slices, and small marshmallows). And any other small thing my sis wants me to do….She’s more of the cooking type, than me.

This means cheesecake later on! *excitement*
I wonder if throwing cheesecake is as effective as pie, especially when the cheesecake has strawberries on it. Then again, cheesecakes (or at least the ones I’m used to) are large, unwieldy and difficult to hide. *ponders*

Well, I had a pretty good Thanksgiving.
The two little cousins were adorable and a lot better behaved than the monsters I was half-expecting, though they both got kind of wound up at times. But what little kids don’t?
Stefan was so cute, as soon as we came in he decided that I belonged to him. We were sitting at the table and he goes “Hey, you wanna be my friend?” Awww. :3 Cute kid (he’s just turned 4). Though I disagree, he DOES NOT look like me. Yes, we both have blue eyes. Yes, we have about the same haircut. Yes, we’re cousins. But no, we don’t share a family resemblance, mostly because he’s ADOPTED family. I mean, he’s fully my cousin, being adopted has no effect on that, but please, don’t tell me he has a family resemblance. That’s just strange in my mind.
    Anyyyway.
And Vyara is a cutie too, she was sitting in my lap, nestled up against me.

So yeah, the cousins were fun, the other cousins were great too, they mostly ignored me, aunts, uncles, etc. were all fine, it was great to see Mo (our Egyptian cousin who’s like family) and his new wife, who was absolutely wonderful.
K, I’m done gushing about my family. I usually don’t, so thanks for indulging me….. ;)

And I ate too much but it was gooood.

    POEM OF GIVING THANKS
I give thanks for my digestive system,
    for the stomach acids
    and many feet of intestine
    that reside in my body;
for I have eaten four pieces of turkey
and a pile of mashed potatoes with gravy
and and two kinds of stuffing
    and sweet potatoes
    and two pieces of cornbread
and one piece of French bread
    and three brussels sprouts…
    O Digestive System:
I give thanks for the enzymes that break down sugar
    and carbohydrates
and proteins and fats and vitamins,
for the many organs that make sure
I can have four different kinds of pie in five minutes…
