Life, the universe, pies, hot-pink bunnies, world domination, and everything
Ah thank you GAPAs. People are far more lazy than we’d like.
Has anyone heard the new Trivium?
No, what is it?
I really like The Firebird and Pines of Rome.
Trivium’s earlier album was a crappy metalcore piece of junk, but the latest (Crusade) is actually a good solid piece of melodic metal. There are still some metalcore elements which get in the way of the overall classic metal vibe, but it’s really pretty good. Solid memorable riffing, good solos, songwriting is meh, but otherwise…
Again, I urge people not to be turned off by the instinctive reaction you get towards metal. It really isn’t about worshiping satan and killing babies. Folk and viking metal is about honor, warriors, homeland eccetera.
As you may or probably don’t know, I am obsessed with Nirvana. But anyway, have any of you seen that video “Here It Goes Again” by O.K. go? Its pretty wierd but kinda cool.
4- Yes. OMG, that is good. Also “A Million Ways” is awsome.
I like Ok Go, any Monty Python songs, Aqua, and the songs I make on Garageband. And lots of other stuff, too.
3-et cetera. Sry, latin geek rising within. Mebbe as a punishment for not doing my hw. Who knows…
You guys know what i like. If not, and you really care that much, go look it up in previous threads. I’m feeling lazy.
6-lol. thats not real music.
(not to be offensive or anything)
but you know, real bands.
8- yes it is!
I am currently listening to music by David Arkenstone. P.S. I am too lazy to type much today, so this will be my only post for a while, but I WILL be here, just lurking!
And jazz rocks.
My new favourite genre is Happy Hardcore. Like techno/club music, just with a harder beat. I’ve been listening to a lot of synthesized stuff lately. CNet has a music download site I’ve been using recently. It’s nice.
Random question: What do you think of Lady Sov? I actually like her. That “Love Me or Hate Me” song is a new addiction.
8-Are you kidding? The lumberjack song is classic! And how about brave sir robin?! And the Knights of the Round Table?! how about SPAMALOT!!! Monty python pwns!
8- Yes it is!! (well not all of it) Ok Go is a real band that you can find on iTunes, you can also find Monty Python on iTunes. And Aqua. But not my songs.
(10) No, jazz swings. Rock rocks. (but both are great).
I’ve seen that video by OK Go. It was cool. I like them.
Does anyone know The Decemberists? They are cool. Sort of weird indie/folk rock alternative stuff.
8- think camelot! is a song! but you;ve been told this too many times.
What about Jpop? The only one I’ve heard is called GO! and it’s by a group FLOW. (they ryhme…)
Not to change the subject of Monty Python (YESSSSSSSSS), but has anyone here heard of Ani DiFranco?
I’m listening to “Young Conservatives” by The Kinks right now. I’m in love.
Who here has heard Weird Al’s new album, “Straight Outta Lynwood”? I haven’t heard it yet (though I do love “White and Nerdy” to the maxx), but my friend has a compulsive urge to quote “Pancreas” whenever I’m in hearing range of her. Anyone who quotes that on here will FEEL THE WRATH!!
Moving on…Check out Ani DiFranco. I suggest “Swandive” (from So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter – I THINK) at the moment. I’m currently in LOVE with that song.
Everyone must now listen to Toad the Wet Sprocket.
I’ll be writing some reviews for my school newspaper in the time to come, and I’ll probably post some here, so stay alert.
18- Ooooh, I’m in the school newspaper. The second meeting is today. IT MOVES SO SLOWLY. And I don’t have anything for it, because it was just announced THIS MORNING. Annoying, much. And I’ll miss my bus.
Back to musick: Aren’t commercial gingles soooooo dreadful? They’re annoying, and they stay in your head ALL DAY. Or for days on end.
I found a really cool band called the Supernauts. They make me happy.
I seriously have a song for everything. I break out into them all te time. Whee.
commercial music sucks. Big time. I’m a big supporter of underground metal bands that don’t get the attention they deserve.
are we allowed to post links to awesome music videos on youtube?
Doooon’t…downloooooad this song…
(doo doo doo doo doo doo)
You’ll burn in H*** before too looooong…
–Weird Al
FrigidSymphony: what do you mean by commercial music?
22: Music designed to sell on the mass market, low quality simple music to appeal to the masses. Like pop, disco, techno, rap, hip hop…
I come from the land of the ice and snow where the midnight sun and the hot springs bloooow…
–The Immigrant Song, by Led Zeppelin
I love Led Zeppelin!
I also love:
Yes
Beatles
Queen
Aerosmith
Sting
Toad the Wet Sprocket
Pat Benetar
Kate Bush
Cars
Barenaked Ladies (The name is a joke. Thier songs are actually scrupulously clean.)
Styx
Dave Matthews Band
Van Halen
Ophrah Chaza
Weird Al Yankovitch (or however you spell his name )
Yes, yes. I’m into classic rock. Also jazz and classical. Heh… :mr green:
Brave, brave Sir Robin
Rode forth from Camelot
He was not afraid to die
Oh brave Sir Robin!
He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways
Brave brave brave brave Sir Robin
He was not at all afraid to be mashed into a pulp
Or to have his eyes gouged out, or his elbows broken…
That’s all I remember. I suppose I could go look up the lyrics, but I’m feeling too lazy right now.
Btw, I’m sure everyone has noticed by now that I like to randomly quote songs everywhere. If you are annoyed by it, tell me and I’ll stop. I’m sorry, I just do things by impulse a lot.
Hammer of the gods… We drive our ships to new lands, fight the hordes, sing and cry, Valhalla I am coming…
On we seep with threshing oar, our only goal will be the western shore! If you like that song, then you will like about every power, folk or viking metal band. Lots of honor, glory, fighting, valhalla, gods and hammers.
FrigidSymphony:
Oo, what was that? Lovely lyrics, for certain. I’m going to check out the bands you told me on Mercora.
But…
It seems we have another lyrics quoter here! *pfft* Must retaliate…
Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face.
Caesar’s palace, morning glory, silly human race,
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place,
If the summer changed to winter, yours is no disgrace.
Battleships confide in me and tell me where you are,
Shining, flying, purple wolfhound, show me where you are,
Lost in summer, born in winter, travel very far,
Lost in losing circumstances, that’s just where you are.
Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face.
Caesar’s palace, morning glory, silly human race,
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place,
If the summer changed to winter, yours is no,
Yours is no disgrace.
Yours is no disgrace.
Yours is no disgrace.
Death defying, mutilated armies scatter the earth,
Crawling out of dirty holes, their morals, their morals disappear.
Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face.
Caesar’s palace, morning glory, silly human, silly human race,
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place,
If the summer changed to winter, yours is no,
Yours is no disgrace.
Yours is no disgrace.
Yours is no disgrace.
–Yes, “Yours is No Disgrace”
I had a longish post, but my connection ran away.
FS- Sounds cool. Huzzah for Mjölnir!
Have any of you heard of Angelspit? I like them….their album won’t be released until Jan. next year, though…but the pre-release stuff is great. Sadly, they are being signed with Hot Topic, which means some trendkids will ruin them. *cries*
I have a question(2 actually)
has anyone ever heard of System of a Down, and what is it besides noise (ignore that if it didn’t work)
I completely understand what you mean about some bands being just noise. My cousin has a band called death do us part (my cousin is really really odd and disturbing sometimes). The music is completely horrible.
Monty Python Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(a waste of space, I know)(but it does rule)
We jus got the deluxe three disk edition of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and it has a sing along to the monk song(the one where they wack themeselves on the heads), the Nights of the round table, and Brave Sir Robin
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeee(yet another waste of space)
My favorite band is called String Theory. don’t worry if you’ve never heard of it no one has except for those of us who are in it.
(23) Not all of those are low quality. I mean, yeah, a lot of it is, but you also have to remember that most of the stuff that gets sold is the bad stuff, so therefore the the good pop, discon and rock stay hidden and you never hear them. I mean, it may not be to your taste, but that doesn’t necissarly mean it’s substanceless.
(29) Cool. I’ve never really given metal a try, but maybe I will. I was gonna try and go to the music store this weekend. (there’s this one little independant cd store in town that sells all the non-mainstream good stuff that the big businesses don’t)
I know I’ve said this about 60 thousand time, but guess who is awesome? That is right. THE WHO. Yes, yes they are. I was just re-listening to an album that I hadn’t picked up for a while. Brilliant.
You need a new song
I’ll set the words up so they tear right at your soul
Don’t take me too long
But there’s a danger that I’ll plagiarize something old
My fingers kill me as I play my guitar
‘Cause I’ve been chewing down at my nails
My hairline ain’t exactly superstar
But there’s one thing that never fails
This never fails
I write the same old song with a few new lines
And everybody wants to cheer it
I write the same old song you heard a good few times
Admit you really want to hear it
Whenever I see you
You always treat me like I’m some kind of perfect man
Just ’cause I please you
You explain, but you don’t think I can understand
My head is spinning as I scrawl with my pen
‘Cause I’ve been pouring vodka in my soul
Nothing really ever changes my friend
New lamps for old
New lamps for old
We sing the same old song, just like a vintage car
You can look but you won’t ever drive it
We drink the same old wine from a brand new jar
We get hung over, but we always survive it
Turn on the radio
Love is proclaimed
Again and again and again
Join in and sing
Now, don’t be ashamed
Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain
Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain
Let it rain
Let it rain
We hum the same old lines to a different crowd
And everybody wants to cheer it
We run on endless time to reach a higher cloud
But we never ever seem to get near it
We sing the same old song
30 (TIBS)- Ehh, they’re okay. Way overrated, though.
You know what I love? Anime soundtracks. Seriously, some of it ranks among the most amazing music I have ever heard. If you haven’t heard it, you must procure yourself a copy of the Wolf’s Rain soundtrack, my current listening material, and plug in your phones. I command you. OHWHATNOW BUUUURN LAWLZ.
The Who? The WHO?
Yeah, they’re good!
Phoenix, i just quoted back the next lines to The Immigrant Song.
I’ll post some viking folk metal lyrics later. now i’e got to eat.
Heeding The Call (by Hammerfall)
A flash in the night, a journey through time
the Templars are back on the streets
Guarded by prowess and the will to survive
all led by the guiding light
Angels of mercy, guardians of time
Shackled and chained through the eternal flame
the hammer will slowly arise
Heeding The Call, one and for all
never surrender, with glory we’ll fall
Brothers unite, let’s stand up and fight
fulfilling our fate, we are Heeding The Call
One step ahead, revealing the past
united, together we stand
The call of the thunder, the sign to begin
this final crusade we will win
Angels of mercy, our journey must proceed
With hearts all filled up with chivalry
the lifeblood that we all need
Heeding The Call, one and for all
never surrender, with glory we’ll fall
Brothers unite, let’s stand up and fight
fulfilling our fate, we are Heeding The Call
Oh, oh, oh…
Heeding The Call, one and for all
never surrender, with glory we’ll fall
Brothers unite, let’s stand up and fight
fulfilling our fate, we are Heeding The Call
Dragons Of The North (by Einherjer)
As blood for wolves for riches and lust
Onward with hammers to chest
Villages burn,burn citys to dust
And for fun they tortue the rest
Cold,blue steel through a nice day`s breast
An avalanche of heathnes set sail
To show to the world of which men is beast
To conquer where others would fail
Odin is working to eagerly form
A great heathen fist from the north
Pray for your life when there`s signs of a storm
But praying won`t help when the dragons com forth
Roaming the bow,the berserks,the fierce
They know not fear of pain
Women and children are swimming in tears
While the berserks are going insane
Scholared embodies by blood and the mound
The clink of sword sound death chord
Bearslough and wolfslough are shaking the ground
Embraced by might,great northern horde
Odin, great warlord,I greed you with hail
This new god is weaker of class
Grant me thy powers, your secrets unveil
And I`ll kick this christ right in the ass
Into the Storm (by Blind Guardian)
Give it to me
I must have it
Precious treasure
I deserve it
bridge:
Where can I run
How can I hide
The Silmarils
Gems of treelight
Their life belongs to me
Oh it’s sweet how the
Darkness is floating around
chorus:
We are following
The will of the one
Through the dark age
And into the storm
And we are following
The will of the one
Through the dark age
And into the storm
Lord I’m mean
Blackheart show me
What you hold in your hand
I still hunger for more
Release me
From my pain
Give it to me
How I need it
How I need it
How I need it
bridge
chorus
I did my part
Now it’s your turn
And remember
What you’ve promised

Sword Chant (by Ensiferum)
[Grim man’s tale:]
[I:]
A flaming blade of the dark shadows struck the lands
With furious lightning it fell into the hands of man
And the ancient fire came down
Down from the sky into the ground
The clouds moved aside as the sword was cast from the sky
Burnt by a mark of fire, who shall make this find
And the grey clouds were watching down, down from the sky into the ground
…As the shapes of light were drowned
[II:]
Courage’s started crowling from the ashes and smoke
And the night was cursed and drifting within the winds so cold
And the knights from the sea were marching down
To the deep caverns down, down where the old spells are found
The war was growing in the old lands and towns
From the mountains war drums pounded with a defeaning sound
They’ll seek the Sowrd forevermore, until in battle they’ll fall
…Now, hear the battle’s call
Who dares to play with death
Who smells the dragon’s breath
No grief for the fallen ones
The search for the sword has begun
[Carved in stone:]
Great as the mountains and seas
Grim as the earth and old trees
Made from the glimmer of golden lakes
Chained with fire that never fades
Rocks and stones they carve and mould
When the rivers run fierce and cold
May this chant haunt your past
For this Sword is yours at last
Raise the arms the battle is near
Through the mud and waters clear
The blood is coloring the lands again
A sign of victory the wind will send
38- Oooooh I like them. *applauds your taste in music* *tries to download mp3s from cache*
39: they’re awesome, aren’t they? I’d post some links, but I doubt the GAPAs would let me get away with it… is there anyway i could give people my email address?
No way that we would abet.
so there’s no way i can get my email across? what if i tell people to go [Snip. No, you can’t do that, either. –Robert]?
well, maybe you could put it in a SEKRIT coded message, but then probably no one could read it..
so, Shostakovich rules. Even his bombastic stuff.
(35) Ooh, my friends are huge Wolf’s Rain fans. I’ve heard the “Stray” song but I hear there’s a good song by Maaya Sakamoto as well. Hmm.
The soundtrack for Tsuiokuhen (the first Rurouni Kenshin OVA) is heartbreaking to listen to . Very good writing music.
the X-Ecutioners have a good song titled “Like This”. the Audio Bullies have a good song called “We Don’t Care”. Fatboy Slim has a good song titled “And the Sign Said”…many, many more…
#30: Yeah, I also thought SoaD were nothing but noise, the first time I heard them on the radio. But then I started actually listening to the lyrics, and – Okay, I know they sound all trippy and nonsensical – but their songs (at least the ones I’ve heard) do have “deeper” meanings, most of them having to do w/ the state our govt is in right now.
For some reason, I’m really into techno/electropop right now. I reely want to get this one album by The Faint…I think it’s just a lot of remixes, actually…Gahh I can’t find it anywhere, though.
46 (emogrl)- Ooh, I love electro-pop/rock. Ear chocolate-covered raisins right there, it is.
38 (FS)- Aww, now I really want to listen to some of that. I don’t suppose any of you have found it in the States, have you?
So, if you are at all fond of random noise that still manages to come together and sound really good, you need to listen to Varèse. He’s very 20th century sounding; you almost wish he’d been born late enough to get his hands onto some synthesisers. (I’m taking 20th century music as a theory elective this year, since I really didn’t feel like doing AP, and my teacher adores him. Zappa did too, apparently.)
Also, I believe I’ve reccomended Apocalyptica on many a music thread of yore. Because they’re just that awesome. Finnish metal cellists. How do you go wrong with that?
I really like raggae.
Has anyone here heard Matisyahu?
47: My dad knows their cello teacher.
and it’s probably a lot harder to get that sort of music in the states than here… you might have to end up paying for import. But then again, there are probably loads of specialised metal stores. Just go hunting.
so, uh, how would someone who wanted some links or samples from me go around contacting me? Please, Robert, you tell ’em, I don’t want to risk saying something illegal and annoying anyone.
I’m sorry, FS. The blog isn’t here to promote file sharing or to help MBers get in touch with one another directly. This is one time when your helpful Administrators will have to be unhelpful, I’m afraid.
51: Dang… it isn’t filesharing, it’s only samples, but whatever… Ok, (hope this doesn’t get zapped) I’ll try to tell you on my own. Anyone interested should [Anyone interested in posting on MuseBlog should jolly well obey both the letter and the spirit of our Rules. I don’t enjoy zapping or clipping posts, but I’ll do as much of both as mule-stubborn MBers force me to. –Robert].
52: Bloody ‘ell… ok, I’ll shut up.
ANI?? ANYbody??
Its spelled Y-A-N-K-O-V-I-C.
My three favourite lines from that song are:
“Jumping is easy/falling is fun/right up until you hit the sidewalk/shivering and stunned”
“Gravity’s nothing to me/I’m moving at the speed of sound/I just want to get my feet wet/until I drown”
“I’m gonna do my best swandive/into a shark-infested water/I’m gonna pull out my tampon and just start splashing ’round/’cause I don’t care if they eat me alive/I’ve got better things to do than survive”
In case anyone is wondering or worrying, they METAPHORICAL. I always have a ‘ell of a time explaining this to my mum.
I LOVELOVELOVE The Who!! They just write kind of bizarre songs.
May I just say some things that have to do with my emotions on music in general:
-I hate Led Zeppelin, Tommy James and the Shandells, motown, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, In Flames, heavy metal, metal, thrash, metal vomit, metal thrash, metal thrash vomit, US rap, R&B written after approx. 1995, most pop music, the Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, Led Zeppelin, and Led Zeppelin.
-I don’t care if you think LZ is the best band in the world. I don’t care if you wrote your thesis on the subject. I don’t care if your girlfriend has a LZ tattoo on her butt. Listening to Led Zeppelin is like stuffing your ears with Pritt, the Non-Sticky Sticky Stuff, and then blowing up the Pritt, only to bandage your head with horse saliva.
-I really like Talking Heads, the Buzzcocks, the Clash, the Damned, X, the Kinks, the Doors, Steely Dan, the Specials, Simon & Garfunkel, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, the B-52s, the Plastics, Elvis Costello, (and to prove that I’m not all old rock music), Steriogram, Pink Martini, Pepe and the Bottle Blondes, the Killers, and the UK Subs.
-I have 15 framed LPs in my room.
-My mp3 player is an 8GB Creative Zen Microphoto, blue.
-‘Nuff said.
Yaaaaaaaaah why does The Zone always have to play Taking Back Sunday all the time?! I feel like clawing my ears off!!
I usually have a very open mind music-wise – I like everything from techno to New Age to metalcore…but there are some bands that I absolutely can’t stand. Usually, it’s b/c a)The singer is too whiny/screech-y (Some emo bands are like that), or b)Their musik is just…nothing but freaking noise– I saw a few metalcore groups this summer at SotU whose musik was pretty much a combination of instruments being beaten on and the lead singer screaming senseless, profane lyrics. Just noise.
Stuff emogrl hates w/ a passion (No off to anyone who likes them)
Cannibal Corpse (My friend likes them…I have no idea why…maybe she doesn’t listen to the lyrics – They’re probably so vulgar that I wouldn’t even be able to post them here)
GWAR – The name fits.
The Killers – I think they sound like arrogant jackarses, making fun of FOB and Panic!…Yes, I know they “made up,” but still.
Yellowcard – Almost as bad as Simple Plan
Taking Back Sunday – Blech
Simple Plan – Likewise
55: Those are of course, personal opinions, with no knowledge of themes and ideals behind most metal.
56: Cannibal Corpse are… well, boring, frankly. If you add anti-christian hate and energy to them, you get Deicide. If you add awesome guitar playing, you get Morbid Angel. In fact, Cannibal Corpse are like the base of all death metal. Which would be interesting if they were the first dm band, which they’re not.
but come on, how can you not like GWAR? The lyrics are awesome…
I love They Might Be Giants! One day in Social Studies, the teacher asked who the 11th President was. And, because of the They Might Be Giants song, I was the only one in our class who knew!
The sun is a mass of incandescent gas, a gigantic nuclear furnace………
Yay for They Might Be Giants!! And OK Go, of course.
50- Our only bypass is through Nationstates.
Bands/Groups/Singers/Songs/Whatever I hate:
You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC. It’s just stupid.
The Darkness. I cannot stand the singer’s voice.
MCR. Helena isn’t that bad, but Gerard annoys me to no end. I’m Not Okay is one of the worst songs ever.
Led Zep. I hatehatehate Stairway to Heaven. After you get over being annoyed by it, it just gets boring. Though the Immigrant Song is tolerable, but only every once and a while.
Avril [can’t spell her last name]. Also annoying.
The Reason by Hoobastank. It’s too long, repetitive, and almost monotonous [killed much spelling there]
Incubus. The singer’s voice annoys me again, and their songs don’t have much substance.
Switchfoot. All of their songs, at least that I’ve endured, sound the same. And it’s not a very happy same.
I’m too lazy to list more. So…
Stuff I Heart:
TMBG [naturally]
Nymphetamine by CoF. It’s so pretty.
Franz Ferdinand. The singer’s voice is just too cool.
Bowie. Enough said. I love Rebel Rebel.
Forever May Not Be Long Enough by Live. Their other songs don’t do much for me, but I love the melody in that one. It’s a side-effect of having seen The Mummy and The Mummy Returns countless times.
Angelspit. 100 Percent is one of the coolest songs ever. Blaring synths equal love.
Alicia Keys, except for that song she did with Usher.
Aretha Franklin. Think!
Breaking Ben. I still need to get their new album. It’s weird, though, because you can actually understand what Ben is singing in Diary of Jane…
The Eagles, especially Desperado.
The Sex Pistols. I love Pretty Vacant to no end. The chorus pwns.
Fischerspooner. They’re pretty cool.
Inside A Dream by Jamison Boaz. Just not when it turns into an earworm for days on end.
John Denver. He is soooooo awesome. Especially Eagles and Horses.
Can’t forget The Who and The Beatles.
Lemon Demon, of course.
TSO. But they need to expand beyond all of the Xmas musick.
Queen! Tie Your Mother Down! The Show Must Go On! Bohemian Rhapsody!
Gimme Some Lovin’ by Spencer Davis Group.
The Supernauts.
The Temptations.
Dark Tranquility.
…and more. Huzzah for CNet’s music download site.
I feel the need to quote lyrics…
When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well theyd be singing so happily,
Joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
Clinical, intellectual, cynical.
There are times when all the worlds asleep,
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man.
Wont you please, please tell me what weve learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.
Now watch what you say or theyll be calling you a radical,
Liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Wont you sign up your name, wed like to feel youre
Acceptable, respecable, presentable, a vegtable!
At night, when all the worlds asleep,
The questions run so deep
For such a simple man.
Wont you please, please tell me what we’ve learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.
yah peoples join nationstates! thats where we do all of our evil plotting.
57-I fart in your general direction. I’m educated, OK? I know what metal is, I know a fair bit about it, and I. Don’t. Like. It. Deal with it. I don’t have to like Led Zeppelin, and I don’t have to like metal. And I know what I’m talking about. OK, kid?
I love Bix Beiderick, too.
I always forget who is whom on Nationstates. It’s igsome.
Wouldn’t it be so cool if every establishment had its own theme song? I think so.
62: go on. What is metal? tell me. I’m interested in hearing your opinion. Zeppelin is NOT metal.
(60) SM, I feel we are kindred spirits. Or at least, have very similar tastes. I love The Logical Song!
Zeppelin? Hmm, my opinion os Zeppelin… (ok, so I differ from SM on this one). I like some Zeppelin. I don’t know them that well. I’m really tired of Stairway to Heaven, but the lyrics are good. Kashmir has a brilliantly done backround rhythm contrasted with the trumpet part.
But that doesn’t mean you have to like them…
I dislike the The Killers. But I have a bit of an unfair prejudice against them.
Rimsky-Korsakof is Rimsky-Corsettes-Off.
(sp? on corsettes)
Frigid Symphony, what did you mean in the 1st post when you said “people are far more lazy than we’d like?” (It’s true, but I don’t see what it pertains to)
60: Wha… Annoying?! Gerard?! No way!
It’s okay, MCR’s not for everyone. I was only angry at you for a few minutes there…No, JK! It’s all good.
That one song…think it’s called Take Me Out…That’s by FF, right? I love that song.
Has anyone ever heard the song Living on a Thin Line by the Kinks? Its my current favorite. And the lyrics are just so true, except the beginnings a little strange :
All the stories have been told
Of kings and days of old,
But there’s no England now.
All the wars that were won and lost
Somehow don’t seem to matter very much anymore.
All the lies we were told,
All the lies of the people running round,
They’re castles have burned.
Now I see change,
But inside we’re the same as we ever were.
Living on a thin line,
Tell me now, what are we supposed to do?
Living on a thin line,
Tell me now, what are we supposed to do?
Living on a thin line,
Living this way, each day is a dream.
What am I, what are we supposed to do?
Living on a thin line,
Tell me now, what are we supposed to do?
Now another century nearly gone,
What are we gonna leave for the young?
What we couldn’t do, what we wouldn’t do,
It’s a crime, but does it matter?
Does it matter much, does it matter much to you?
Does it ever really matter?
Yes, it really, really matters.
Living on a thin line,
Tell me now, what are we supposed to do?
Living on a thin line,
Tell me now, what are we supposed to do?
Now another leader says
Break their hearts and break some heads.
Is there nothing we can say or do?
Blame the future on the past,
Always lost in blood and guts.
And when they’re gone, it’s me and you.
Living on a thin line,
Tell me now, what are we supposed to do?
Living on a thin line,
Tell me now, what are we supposed to do?
Living on a thin line.
Sorry to double post, but-
Some senior at my school produced Tommy for his senior project. My friend Josh was in it (he played 10 year old Tommy) and it was actually pretty good, except they took out a couple of scenes which made it a little confusing. Like, they took out the Cristmas song (ya know, the one that says “but Tommy doesn’t know what day it is, he doesn’t know who Jesus was or what prayin’ is, how can he be saved?..) I think they probably took that one out because of religious content, but whatever, it was still good. Josh played being deaf, dumb(mute) and blind very convincingly.
67- yup. Franz Ferdinand is awesome.
48- yes.
58 (and other posts around there)- yay for TMBG!
52 (and similar posts)- FS, if you really want musers to listen to the music you like, you tell us the group names and then we can look for it on our own. MB is antilink and contact info and if you can’t deal with that then maybe you should stop posting it here.
LOL, We’re having a sort of Weird Al party right now – We rented this movie w/ him in it (Forgot what it’s called), and my brother’s friend brought over Straight Outta Lynwood.
I ♥ my pancreas.
(69) Really? That’s toasty. I just re-watched Tommy last night. I love that movie.
What I meant in my first comment was about people being too lazy to click back a page to post in this thread. As soon as it was brought up front, it immediately got attention.
As for band names, I’ll write up a list of the sort of bands you guys seem to like, and post it later. Be prepared…
i know this boy who is like married to his violin. i’m sorry, how random was THAT? but seriously, he is like obsessed with classical music and playing said classical music on his violin. my friend told me that he once tried to play stairway to heaven (lurve that song ) but it didnt really work.
74- *gasp* A newbie! *welcome-pies* Correct me if I’m wrong… Stairway to Heaven on a violin, eh? Odd.
(73) Ah, je comprends. Yes, true.
If I start listening to metal, my sister will probably disdain my musical taste forever, but oh well. I might give it a try anyway. New things are fun.
Does anyone here like making dongs on GarageBand? OK, mine are all totally unoriginal, because they’re all just generic loops glued together, but it’s still really cool to play around with.
I love Djambe music. And playing the djambe. But it makes my fingers hurt.
(anybody no what that is?)
(sorry is this is a duplicate post, my computer is evil)
76-whats a djambe?
I love garageband!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like to play with it at three o’clock in the morning to wake people up!! I always manage to mess up the tempo tho.
(77) Haha, that’s exactly what I do on GB.
A djambe is an african drum. It’s in sort of an hourglass shape. I know some people who play djambe and I’ve taken a class. The rhythms are wonderful. It makes different noises depending on how you hit, some more like a “duum” and some more like “fleck” sound, at a slightly higher pitch. Using the combinations of sound allows you to get this beautiful, pulsing, staccato melody. It’s really exciting. I wish I could play them more often. The dancing that goes with is really fun too.

55) Our art teacher thinks that LZ is the best thing in the world, and all us kids think he is crazy. He kind of scares us. (Led Zepplin, that is….)
79 (FS)- I actually know one of those bands: the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I feel educated. You woudn’t happen to know how many of he others are available in the States, would you?
Currently on a Garbage kick. The band, not the trash.
……………………………………………………Viking Metal?………………………………………………….
You can probably get some of the more major bands, like Yngwie Malmsteen, Rhapsody, Sonata Arctica, Amon Amarth… But you won’t find loads of the pagan/viking/folk bands. Most of the americans I know order this stuff from europe, or are on special trading sites. I would recommend you go to the biggest record store and have a look. Then look for a smaller store that specialises in metal. You should find a lot more there. In the end, apart from downloading, the only way you’ll be able to get the rest is by importing it from Europe. Scandinavia has a GREAT metal market.
Btw, I’ll explain the subgenres a bit.
Viking metal is metal with lyrical content set firmly in nordic mythology. The music is usually empowering, but with harsh vocals.
Folk metal is metal inspired by and incorporates folk and medieval sounds and instruments. Vocals are usually clean. Also very uplifting.
Pagan metal is like the darker side of folk. Very ambient, and often a lot like black metal. Lyrical themes can sometimes be a bit negative, like human sacrifice or sacrificial rape. Remember, no one takes it less seriously than the musicians themselves. And of course, no on takes it more seriously than the Church. Anyway, pagan metal also uses lots of folk and medieval instruments, but it’s much darker and atmospheric. Also a lot more aggressive.
Neo-classical metal is… well, neo-classical. Music heavily based on classical music and with all the classical virtuosity (Adagio has an AMAZING piano player). It frequently plays covers of classical pieces, but it’s all done in a new and sophisticated way. Also, different neo-classical bands use different classical sounds. Falconer and Rhapsody are heavily based on the baroque period, whilst After Forever (with a female A Cappella singer), Koyaanisqatsy and TSO focus more on the romantic period. Yngwie Malmsteen was one of the first popular artists in the subgenre, playing classical pieces and using classical technique at a speed unheard of before. He’s referred to as “The King of Neo-Classical Speed Metal”.
68-If you like that song, go find “The Songs We Sang for Auntie” and listen to that version. I
Today my choir learned out second song! Our Shabbaton is in two weeks, and we’re singing for it. It’s going to be sooo fuuun…
He’re the first song, transliterated and translated:
Hineh yamim…ba’aim me’um
Asher nishbaatah…ra’av ba’aretz
lo…ra’av la’lechem v’lo tzama’ah lamayim *repeat*
*to a slow, swinging, chanting-ish beat*
lo ra’av lalechem
velo tzamah lamayim
ki im lishmoah
im lishmoah
et d’var Hashem *repeat*
Here is the song roughly translated:
These are the days
That shall soon be
That in them you promised
There would be a hunger in the land
But will we hunger for bread
And thirst for water?
We will not hunger for bread
And we will not thirst for water
For hunger will not come to those
Who listen to the word of God.
We listen to the word of God.
It’s kind of depressing, but it is GORGEOUS in Hebrew and there are five harmonies besides the melody. Maybe I will record it and post it here.
The second song is even better, but I don’t know all the words yet.
We’re doing a German piece in Chorale right now and we’re soooooooo bad w/ the diction…It’s kinda funny.
Skipper is (hopefully) visiting the CD store this weekend. (Weekend? It’s only wednesay, you may say, but guess what? Skipper’s on holiday coz of conferences! w00t!!)
Quick quick give me some suggestions on things to buy!
Here’s a few ideas I had already:
The Rolling Stones
The Kinks
Any of the classical or folk metal bands that FS I may be able
to find
I want some east listening too. Maybe some world stuff. Any ideas?
87: hmmm… See if you can find Meat Loaf’s new record. Should be available on friday. As for world stuff, I don’t know much eastern music, but I love Tenhi. Scandinavian atmospheric stuff. Sort of folk metal but without the metal. And no vocals.
Get the Kate Bush album Hounds of Love. It has some really great Irish music on it.
Um…if you want Arabic music you can listen to Ophrah Chazah. Also, Achinoam Haglili (although in America I think she is just called Noa.)
I can ask my freinds for good Spanish music, if you want it.
Oh, you can also probably find a lot with amazon.
For fans of TSO: Go listen to Savatage!!! They’re an american melodic hard rock band with beatuiful lyrics and great singing. Jon Oliva (vocals) and Al Pitrelli (guitars) are the main members of TSO. It’s they’re project. Also, Jon Oliva’s solo stuff, under the heading Jon Oliva’s Pain, is incredible as well.
75 — ummmmm, about that . . . leila the pirate mermaid is actually the same as me. moving on . . .
i have a lindsay lohan song stuck in my head.
somebody said something about The Who, and now my dad and little sister won’t stop talking about it…….
Now my sis is ready to kill me for calling her”little”. 2 years difference. (Actually, she’s my bestis pal.) we both LOVE cetic music. Gaelic Storm is a common fave. I play fiddle and she plays flute. We’re starting a band and thinking from changing the name from “celtic demolition” to “tubers”. Any other ideas??
apparently I scared everybody away….or maybe no one else is awake at this hour of night! Getting back to music, I also like the Itinerant Band, Bonnie Rideout, Maggie’s music etc.
my sis and I rewrote one of Gaelic Storm’s songs, Kiss me I’m Irish. If you’re so deprived that you don’t know the words, here they are;
Kiss me i’m Irish,
I am the wild rover.
My eyes they are smiling,
and I’m seldom sober!
I like my wiskey,
and I love to dance,
so if you’re feeling as lucky as me,
take a chance…
and kiss me I’m Irish!
well, we turned that into;
hug me I’m freezing,
the wind it is blowing,
the night it is darkening,
and we’re far from sober!
I like my heaters,
and radient floors,
so if you’re feeling as chilly as me,
go ahead…
And hug me I’m freezing!
i learned a new song ty and your not the only one awake so dont worry
94 (PA)- If you mention Bonnie Rideout to my little sister, she’ll go all hyper and Scottish on you.
I’m writing a rock song for cello and piano. Of course, considering my training, it’s heavily classical-influenced. Perhaps, if I ever finish it and get one of my friends to play it with me, I can post a soundbite. You’ll finally get to hear me singing (or not, if I can find someone better). You won’t want to.
Any tips on writing good, rhyming lyrics?
Current Soundtrack: “Baba O’Reilly”, The Who
one quick question- what are your thoughts on evanescence’s old cd vs. the new one? I own Fallen and I dunno whether to aquire the new.
97 (e~a)- I adore Evanescence in general, so perhaps I’m not the best judge. The singles I’ve heard are excellent, though I think I like Fallen better.
Current Soundtrack (coincidentally): “My Immortal”, Evanescence
Princess Aqua (93),
How about Phytophthera for a band name? Phytophthera Infestans is the name of the fungus that wiped out the potatoes in Ireland, causing the great famine of the late 1840s. Dark and mysterious and fun to say.
I think I like your idea — tubers — better, though.
Yay, more Ev fans…They’re pretty good. Although, the one thing I don’t like is how the bands seems to have become all about Amy…I think Terry, John, Rocky, and Tim need some recognition as well!
I feel like I’m the only one who actually likes the new album more. I thought Fallen was OK, it’s just that the majority of the songs just seemed plain depressing. Most of the songs in TOD are really metal-ish, and…just stuff you could get up and dance to! I would certainly reccommend (sp?) getting TOD, or at least downloading…Sweet Sacrifice, CMWYS, and Cloud Nine.
One of the saddest songs I have ever heard, and also one of the most beautiful, is “When October Goes” If you can’t listen to the music, at least read the lyrics. I am too lazy to get them, so go get them yourself.
Evanescence is crap. Some american band ripping off european goth and making loads of money while bands like Sentenced, Lacuna Coil and Nightwish get nothing.
100)Evanescence rules. Pwns. Rocks. I love them infinitely. I got their new cd, The Open Door, and yeah, I think it’s better than Fallen, though it’s good too. Here are the lyrics for one of my favorites, “Your Star”.
I can’t see your star
I can’t see your star
Though I patiently waited, bedside, for the death of today
I can’t see your star
I can’t see your star
The mechanical lights of Lisbon frightened it away
And I’m alone now
Me and all I stood for
We’re wandering now
All in parts and pieces
Swim lonely
Find your own way out
……..
How can the darkness feel so wrong?
……..
It’s growing colder
Without your love
Why can’t you feel me
Calling your name
Can’t break the silence
It’s breaking me
……..
Fear I felt turned to rage
Sorry that I couldn’t remember it all very well. Some of my favorite Evanescence songs are “Tourniquet” (on Fallen), “CMWYS”, “Like You”, and “All That I’m Living For”. They rock!!!!
103: Those lyrics don’t mean anything. There’s no poetry, it’s not meant to be funny, it’s not even meant to be bad. It’s trying to be deep, but it doesn’t say a single thing. And anyone can just repeat a song title over and over.
91-Like the Lou Reed song! She’s a wild child/and nobody can get at her! I was talking to…

ACK! I’ve got the meanies song stuck in my head! THANKS MISSY!(nickname for my sister)
Don’t let the meanies bite your head off… Arg.
I was listening to Primordial again the other day and I realized why I liked it that much. While it might not be technically impressive, it’s true, emotional music. When he sings, you can feel his utter anguish at witnessing the natural world be destroyed the way it is. Very intense and heavy feelings.
Yay, so I made concertmaster at all-region auditions!
1.What was the last album you bought?
um, bought, I think would be A User’s Guide to They Might Be Giants, but my violin teacher’s given me copys of cds and stuff since then..
2.What are you listening to right now?
nothing. I just got back from region auditions, and having to listen to 20 other people butcher the same excerpts over and over and over again sort of killed my ears.
3.Whose concert did you go to last?
Um, Motoi Takeda and Eric Schumpsky (okay, I just butchered both the names, I think), playing violin/viola stuff.
4.What are your Top 5 most hated songs?
1. any christmas muzak. 2. any christmas muzak. 3. any christmas muzak. 4. any christmas muzak. 5. the stuff we’re playing in orchestra, including a “Vaghn Williams Christmas”, “Songs from the Polar Express”, “The Christmas song”, “The Holly and the Ivy”, some waltz, and another really really easy like 6th-grade level christmas medly. And this is for varsity high school orchestra. And all of these could be played by a sixth-grader.
5.And your Top 5 most liked?
1. Shostakovich 2. Tom Lehrer 3. TMBG 4. the Beatles 5. Bob Marley
6.What covers of songs did you like best?
Sun Ra and his Arkestra play Walt Disney tunes
7.What band/artist apparel do you own?
um, Beatles shirt, Arlo Guthrie shirt, Bob Marley authentic concert shirt from 1978, maybe some others.
8.What time of the day do you listen to music?
afternoon/evening. sometimes morning.
9.What players do you have? Headphones?
generic cd player, generic boom box, computer, no idea
10. What radio do you listen to?
none
Brava, Lizzie! Felicitations!
OMG just downloaded Drudkh’s all acoustic ukrainian folk songs!!!! AWESOMENESSS!!!! FOLK OVERLOAD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have you noticed the emergence of faux concert shirts as a “cool” thing to wear? Like, I’ll see all these people wearing “BEATLES 1979” and then underneath, in really small letters, it will say “copyright 2006 aeropostle” or something like that?
Not to mention that none of the kids wearing this stuff were even alive in 1979, nevertheless ever heard more than maybe 1 song by these bands.
115- thanks!
118- and not to mention that the Beatles weren’t even together by 1979..
1.What was the last album you bought?
Dial a song, TMBG
2.What are you listening to right now?
nothing.
3.Whose concert did you go to last?
I don’t think I’ve been to a concert for a while. Arrogant worms, maybe
4.What are your Top 5 most hated songs?
I dunno
5.And your Top 5 most liked?
TMBG, Franz Ferdinand, Matisyahu. I’ll list more later no time now
6.What covers of songs did you like best?
dunno
7.What band/artist apparel do you own?
nothing really
8.What time of the day do you listen to music?
afterschool
9.What players do you have? Headphones?
generic cd player, generic boom box, computer, no idea
10. What radio do you listen to?
none
102- I’m also planing on getting some Nightwish music. And I wouldn’t say it’s crap if your only reason is that the others need more appreciation. never mind, you say later that the lyrics are bad. I dunno, I’d have to go read them to see if I agree/disagree. I like Hello, My Immortal, Holding my last breath and tracks 7 and 8 on fallen especially. (sorry, I haven’t listened to it in a while I don’t remember the titles)
119- Whoops, sorry, I meant 69.
I don’t really care for Nightwish that much, Tarja’s voice get’s on my nerves. But they’re really talented musicians and songwriters, unlike Evanescence, who just rip them off.
Oh, anyone interested in pagan/folk music, check out Drudkh’s new album: Songs of Grief And Solitude. All acoustic ukrainian folk songs with flutes and forest sounds in between. beautiful…
FrigidSymphony, you sound like you would really like Kate Bush, most especially Jig of Life. I think it is about Irish Druidic mythology–it’s very beautiful. Also, Waking the Witch is a great one, too. Try ’em out, mate.
117- YES! AND IT BUGS THE HECK OUT OF ME!!!
Also bugging me: ripped up jeans and crudely stitched blouses that cost hundreds of dollars. Apparently, those are modeled off of the ’60s hippie idea of non-consumerism and “wear your jeans till they die” and marketing that is just so backwards. My mom says that it is a consumerism victory and that our need to acquire will kill us all.
119- Um, yes they were. They got big in 1964 and broke up in 1970.
1. What was the last album you bought?
I usually just listen to whatever my sister buys. I think I like playing music more.
2. What are you listening to right now?
Nothing.
3.Whose concert did you go to last?
The DSO (Detroit symphony Orchestra)
4. What are your top five most hated songs?
Anything rap or anything that repeats itself over and over
5.Your top five most liked?
I don’t know- I kinda like a variety as long as it doesn’t sound like anything from the last question.(rap, ect)
6. What covers of songs do you like best?
I don’t know
7. What band/artist apparrel do you own?
Not really anything
8. What time of day do you listen to music?
Usually whenever I’m hanging out with my friends or relaxing or something.
9. What players do you have?
A cd/radio and a portable cd player. You would not believe how quickly it uses batteries!!! My dad also hooked something up so now the whole house can listen to something played upstairs, even if you are in the basement, but nobody in our house has the same musical preference.
10. What radio station do you listen to?
It depends on how I’m feeling, but mostly 105.1
126 I do not like ripped up jeans either. Why would you pay to get ruined clothing??
ripped up jeans are just wierd.
i don’t have a problem with other people wearing them, but i wouldn’t.
Queenie’s Questionaire for Musers
1.What was the last album you bought?
Brothers in Arms- Dire Straits and Forbidden Love ep- Death Cab for Cutie (I bought them at the same time)

5.And your Top 5 most liked?

6.What covers of songs did you like best?
The Postal Service cover of Such Great Heights by Iron and Wine
Cake’s cover of I will Survive
Jimi Hendrix’s “The Star Spangled Banner”
7.What band/artist apparel do you own?
Cake Shirt
Decemberists shirt
my rule about band apparel is that I don’t wear it unless I own an album by the band it’s from. I hate all the stupid poseurs who wear band shirts to look cool.
Beatles undies.
8.What time of the day do you listen to music?
Whenever I feel like it.
9.What players do you have? Headphones?
nngeh.. crappy old speakers that I found in the garage that hook up to my computer. And a cd player. and those stupid annoying little earbud headphones.
(in my dreams, a really nice non-iPod mp3 player and a pair of big bose headphones)
10. What radio do you listen to?
I hate radio music. With a bloody passion. There are no good stations where I live.
So The Decmberists concert was incroyable!!!!!!! Steven wore his frog hat thing and the lead singer took it and put it on his head. My section leader was there and got his cell phone signed. They played a lot of new stuff, but of course they finished off with the old fav., 16 Military Wives. They split up the audience and had us sing the refrain. It was so mush fun.
Two songs you absolutely have to buy/borrow/download right now:
Manowar: The Sons Of Odin (From the current s/t EP)
Manowar: Battle Hymn (From the album Battle Hymns)
#103: That song made me cry. But I love it. I don’t know why.

For some reason, the song Comalies (Lacuna Coil) made me cry – I don’t even know Italian (The whole song is in Italian)! Heh heh, I am so weird…

#126: Yeah…Just look on the window of any A+F store…I guess their slogan thingie is “Casual Luxury.” Seriously, I’ve tried on some stuff there, and it fits worse than the stuff at some department stores – at least on my body type, which is fairly normal.
Ripped-up jeans are nice…Just save some $$ and get them from the thrift store!
LOL, this guy I don’t even know complimented me on my shirt today. Aww. Welcome to the Black Parade came out today, so I was wearing my MCR shirt (It has a girl in a skool uniform wearing a gas mask + carrying a rosary – Kinda freakish, but of course I liked it) over my black fishnet shirt (The sleeves have thumbholes; how cool is that?), and these jeans I sort of customized (Read: Paint-splattered red + black).

6. What covers of songs do you like best?
I don’t know
7. What band/artist apparrel do you own?
Not really anything
8. What time of day do you listen to music?
all day!
9. What players do you have?
stereo, radio. i wish i had an ipod!
10. What radio station do you listen to?
anything.
Has anyone heard of the band Crystalline? Are they any good (I’ve only heard part of one of their songs, but it sounded purty neat)?
i’ve heard of them… but not heard them.
Yngwae malmsteen pwnz!!!
bands me likes. (not in any order, just random)
Sum 41
Rammstien
Dream Evil
DragonfOrce!!!!!!!!!!
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Cradle of filth (newer stuff. i find the old stuff to be just noise. ya know)
candlemass
morbid Angel
Slayer
Nirvana
Nevermore
Hendrix
Floyd
Guns n’ roses
System of a down. no, its not just noise
Sabbath
Deep purple
Hammerfall
Weird al
Megadeath
Just random stuff. id like to know more symilar stuff. more melodic metal. i listen to napalm death, and im like “…..” yeah.
I dont buy things. LIMEWIRE! umm. right. illegal. zap away!
i should check out manowar, decide.
MCR is bleh. evanescence is promising, but 90& bad lyrics. sorry. HIM is bleh too.
Now listening to Chasing the Dragon-Dream Evil.
137: You understand. Finally. Don’t you like Manowar, though??? Aesome… However, I feel I need to impart my metal wisdom to you. DragonForce: Undeserving of the many exclamation marks. Herman Li and Sam Totman are fast players, but sloppy. The songs all sound the same and the lyrics are bad. I probably like only two songs, after that it gets boring. And it really pisses me off when I see kids going around saying how “Dragonforce has teh best guitarists evah” when they don’t even know who Zakk Wylde is, for God’s sake. Also, Nirvana has no place on the same list as Dream Evil, Morbid Angel, Megadeth, ecc. Kurt Cobain was one of the most overrated guys ever. He couldn’t play guitar, and most of the hit songs of Nevermind were written by his producer. In fact, he wouldn’t even have gotten as famous as he did if he hadn’t blown his bloody brains out. Next, Cradle of Filth. The older stuff is far superior to the newer (except maybe Nymphetamine). Pure black metal, none of this new mass appealing crap. And when you say Metallica, I sincerely hope you don’t include St. Anger. One of the worst records ever. If you want an explanation, I’ll give you one, but not now. It would take up too much space.
Spelling Corrections: YngwIE Malmsteen; MegadEth; RammstEIn.
So, you would probably like pretty much anything I recommend, seeing as we have sort of the same tastes, but living in Europe I have much wider access to a much more varied metal selection.
Some big Power Metal bands here you’d like (and are far superior to DF) :
Blind Guardian
Sonata Arctica
Edguy
Rhapsody
Children of Bodom
Manowar
*goes to look up*.
i like dragonforce….
Hey guess what choir ppl? We got to sing in the stairwell today during Chorale – It was fun! I liked the echoey effect…LOL We were so loud.
Does anyone here like Death Cab? Please?
126- I meant they were like fake tour shirts, not that they had broken up. I was fixing a mistake I made earlier when I had accidentaly typed 79.
140- Thats sounds really fun. I got my sister to sing the peter rabbit book report song(from “Your a Good Man Charlie Brown) with me. It was vvv funny. Especially because the two of us were trying to sing all 4 parts.
I like weird al yankscovitch and bowling for soup.
anyone know who the creepy big fat ud at the beginning of her ghost in the fog by cradle of filth is?
in the video hes the huge guy with the knife.
139: DragonForce are good, but they’re nothing exceptional. Just very fast. What happens is that since they signed to Roadrunner records, they’ve suddenly gotten cool. But they really don’t hold a candle to other european bands. Like the ones I posted…
#142: Hehe…Singing more than one part would be kinda hard.
(99) yeah, that’s probobly what we’ll end up as, tubers. I got this green necklace and one of my friends said, “now you can get down to your Irish roots!” and her grandma laughed, ” my Irish roots are potatoes!!” and we thought that would be a good name for a band, except it’s too long, so we just said tubers! Phytotherea is cool to say though!!
So, here’s part 2: Anyone with certain musical tastes (themes, virtuosity, lyrics, historical content) list ’em, and I’ll reply with the appropriate groups.
This sounds too much like an advertisement but, whatever…
142- I did that play last year in skool!! I got Lucy, and now I’m famous for being the fourth grader who got the starring role……
I made up a really awesome song yesterday at my piano lesson.
On top of piaaaaaaaaano…
all covered with keeeeys….
I lost my sheeeet music
when my piano teacher sneeeeeeeeeeezed…
It flew of the stttaaaaaaaaand
and onto the flooooooor
and then my poor Greeeeeensleeeves
just flew out the dooooooooooooor
I also made up dance moves.
Dance moves?
I know a really pretty song…in Hebrew.
Kol ha’olam kulo
Gesher tzar me’od
Gesher tzar me’od
*repeat*
Ve’..ha’..i..kar
Ve’ha’ikar
Lo lephached
Lo lephached k’var
Ve’ha’ikar
Ve’ha’ikar
Lo lephached kvar!
It means, roughly,
The entire world
Is a shaky bridge
A shaky bridge.
And the idea of it all
The true secret
Is to never, never be afraid!
I like your song, Kiki!
#149: Haha That’s cute!
I found The Black Parade at Border’s today…I danced for joy. Not even kidding. There’s a hidden track on it that’s maybe a minute long…Just the most creepy, random, morbid song I’ve heard in a long time. Ha.
Oh and I heard Here It Goes Again the other day…I really liked it – It made me dance! Whoa…I’ve nvr liked happy muzik before.
153- OK GO!!!!! w00tw00tw00tw00tw00tw00t!!!!
Some people did this a while back so now I’m going to
Bands Skipper Likes (in no particular order)
The Who
The Beatles
The Dire Straits
Bjork
Bob Dylan
Bob Marley
the boy least likely to (ok, the title makes the sound like some stupid boy band, but they’re actually pretty good folk rock)
Buffalo Springfeild
Cake
America
Davis Bowie
Death Cab for Cutie
The Postal Service
The Shins
The Decemberists
Eric Clapton
Franz Ferdinand
Queen
Gnarls Barkely
Interpol
Jimi Hendrix
Journey
Red Hot Chili Peppers
OK GO
among others.
155-of those i like
RHCP
Jimi (some songs)
Ok go
beatles (some songs)
138-for CoF, what do you mean by “mass apeeal”? dude… they’re still at least death metal. even the somethingography is death.
also. i oficially agree with you on DForce. im over them. fire and flames video=enough. wgen i said metallica, i actually meant master of puppets. yeah. i recently discovered metal, so ill take a while to find the really good stuff i like. last year, i was all green day and sum 41. o vells.
parental unit calling.
156: Currently, CoF appeal to whimpy goth teenagers who think that cutting and satan ist krieg. They used to be underground pure black and death, then they altered their sound to appeal to more people.
And about DF: Don’t entirely stop listening to them. Inhuman Rampage isn’t really that good, but I enjoy Sonic Firestorm, mainly for the catchy melodies, and Valley of The Dammned is pretty good too. And if you’re interested in good metal, I’d recommend the metal forum I post on. It’s mentioned in other threads, tha GAPAs didn’t zap it, and I’ll try to post it again here. metalreviews.com (with www. before, obviously)
I had the coolest singing experience the other day. It was during second lunch, and Mia and I were bored. We decided to go hang out in the stairwell, b/c there’s a heater there (Our skool is freaking freezing). Somehow, we both ended up singing. It was sooo neat to hear my voice all alone there…It was kind of echo-ey.
Has anyone heard of a song called Water Night? We just started that in choir…It’s very…haunting. Yeah, that’s the word for it. But it’s sooo cool – One of those songs where you’re low and quiet one moment, and then high and piercingly loud the next.
138: Ooooh. You just dissed Nirvana. Never go to Seattle, or else they might shoot you.
1. What was the last album you bought?
Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced and Stanley Jordan’s Live In New York
2. What are you listening to right now?
All Along The Watchtower (Jimi)
3.Whose concert did you go to last?
I don’t like concerts.
4. What are your top five most hated songs?
Hillary Duff (ANYTHING)
Aiden (ANYTHING BY)
Any country other than Johnny Cash
5.Your top five most liked?
Umm. Artists? I can’t do songs
Jimi Hendrix (No crap, Sherlock!)
The Beatles
The Killers (I know, I know…)
Stanley Jordan
Johnny Cash
Beethoven
some Elvis (classics!)
Nirvana
more later..
6. What covers of songs do you like best?
???
7. What band/artist apparrel do you own?
Nothing
8. What time of day do you listen to music?
depends on meh busy schedule.
9. What players do you have?
Computer.
10. What radio station do you listen to?
NPR. (Because I’m boring)
(158) that sounds like fun! Once, I was in a tunnel-drainage thing that under and overpass and I started singing and it was cool. Except I have a terribke voice, so it probably wasn’t quite as groovy as your exoerience.
I realized the problem with modern music. No dynamic contrast. It’s all either blahstissimo or BLASTissimo.
160: Jimi’s All Along The Watchtower is a cover of Bob Dylan’s. That means that Dylan originally wrote it and Jimi did his own version.
Wow. This album is amazing.
Lover’s Requiem (I Am Ghost)
If you like Evanescence, HIM, or the like, then this band is for you.
163: I was at the polytechnic in Helsinki, at the pop and jazz department. Apparently the bassist from the Rasmus studied there. But what was really funny was when the director of the school was asked about HIM by a colleague. He said “Ville Valo doesn’t know bollocks about music”. It warms my heart to know that there are people high up in the music schools who don’t like HIM either. If you’re gonna talk about finnish bands, then HIM are far down the line.
Hey, I just noticed something. Why doesn’t it say “by request of FrigidSymphony” at the top of the thread? I requested it, and it’s thanks to my nagging that the GAPAs put up a new one!
I just bought White and Nerdy on iTunes.
162: OK. I still like it.
167: You should. Jimi’s version was so much better than Dylan’s that even Dylan plays it more like Jimi did in concerts.
Okay, so the all-state orchestra results came out yesterday, and I got 2nd!!!! We’ll still have to reaudition for seats, but I came in 2nd and only was beaten by one person and placed higher than a lot of really good people!
hello!!! jesus, a thread moves to the back page and it’s like it doesn’t exist!
come on!!! Either revive the thread or post a new version!
(169) Woah! That’s really cool! Congrats, all-state is impressive. What do you play?
Hello FS, how are you? What music do you like other than metal, seeing as I have failed miserably to try listening to it as I promised I would? Yeah, sorry about that. It was really hard to find any of the bans you suggested and I can’t get anywhere unless I have a ride, which I don’t normally. But seriously, what are some non-metal musicians you like, other than Zepplin and Hendrix and the ones you’ve already mentioned.
You know who I hate? John Phillip Sousa. If I have to play “Stars and Stripes forever” one more time, I’ll choke on my clarinet. Which is sad, because I’m marching in the Macy’s Day parade and will have to play it for 45 minutes striaight (along with a few other tunes).
172: Classical music and some jazz guitarists are insanely good. D’you know about Friday Night in San Francisco with John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola and Paco De Lucia? Insanely good playing…
173) Hmm, and I thought that you and I would never have any music interests that were the same…….
Except for that I think ALL jazz is awesome, not just guitarists. And classical music is nice, too. Aww, now I want to listen to some! And our dangitall computer doesn’t have sound right now. It buggeth me!
In my music life: Chorus((name of district)Select Chorus) eats up most of my free time, I’m eagerly awaiting the results of All-County Band, my iPod is an alarm clock, I should be practicing now. I like classical but there’s too many choices so I get confused and don’t often buy it, Broadway soundtracks but usually only for what I’ve seen, and Weird Al/Tom Lehrer/that kind of stuff.
105-1. Last thing I bought-White&Nerdy video, iTunes;last album I imported, Straight Outta Lynwood; before that, Wicked soundtrack. Last album I bought, didn’t borrow from family member, not sure. A long time ago.
2. Nothing, last thing I listened to was Defying Gravity last night, if it was a weekday my alarm is this classical thing.
3. I’ve never been to a “famous person concert”, (I wasn’t allowed to go to the Poodle Hat concert but I’m planning to go to the next one in our area that I’m here for); I sang with the chorus I’m in a few weekends ago at this interfaith celebration at a local college chapel.
4. No idea specifically, but I hate rap and hip-hop in general.
5. 1.Your Horoscope For Today, Weird Al; 2. We didn’t Start The Fire, Billy Joel; 3. Seasons of Love, Rent; 4. Think of Me, Phantom of the Opera; 5. Good Morning Baltimore, Hairspray.
6. What’s a cover?
7. none
8. Whenever I have time and remember to, usually on long car rides and not that often.
9. 5th gen. 30 gig. white video iPod, some portable CD player I never use now that I have my iPod, headphones that have these things that loop around the back of your ear, for lack of a better description.
10. I don’t often listen to radio by choice, and I have no idea what the horrible music they play on the school bus is.
YAY! My very own copy of Are You Experienced showed up today! Before, I had to borrow my sister’s.
‘Scues me, while I kiss the sky
Queenie’s Questionaire for Musers
1.What was the last album you bought? i don’t. i steal songs off my friends.
2.What are you listening to right now? You’d better shop around-Smokey robinson
3.Whose concert did you go to last? …oh man, it’s been a while. i don’t really go to concerts. i think that would be bowling for soup at the ohio fair…wow, that was a long time ago…
4.What are your Top 5 most hated songs? rap. i don’t really have a top 5 list.
5.And your Top 5 most liked? there are so many…
6.What covers of songs did you like best? i rarely see the covers. see q 1. i’m assuming you mean like album covers?
7.What band/artist apparel do you own? none
8.What time of the day do you listen to music? whenever i can…latin, after skool, at night (yes, occasionally while i sleep), at crew, whenever
9.What players do you have? Headphones? an ipod shuffle, although i’m thinking of getting a used mini with what’s left of my b-day money. i don’t know though, i love my shuffle but i’m just running out of space. and i think i’d have to sell it to get enough money, but i’d still want to use it because it’s really useful…i don’t know, i guess when it comes down to it i wouldn’t really use a mini that much. if only they were shuffle-sized *sigh* i could get a nano but i’m not too fond of them for some reason. My headphones say Philips SBC HS430 whatever that means. they’re pretty nice. me ♥ them. XD
10. What radio do you listen to? none.
176: Ozzy Osbourne always thought that the line was “scuse me while I kiss this guy”. That’s at the same level as the reporters asking wether he says “I tell you to end your life” instead of “I tell you to enjoy life”.
172-i feel for you. on a slightly smaller level. We had to play it in the veteran’s day parade like a million times over. But not for 45 min. straight.
so i was randomly looking up lyrics to my songs as they came on my trusty shuffle, even though i know most of them by heart anyway, and i got to riders on the storm by the doors. quite disturbed. still love the song though. but really.
that makes the third song i have that really swears (meaning, fasterisk not just dasterisk and helasterisk) (cheers to monty for the asterisking) but Who are you is the only one that really counts because in riders on the storm it’s pretty much just a scream and in love shack, the kareoke version says “funky little shack” but i still think it definitely sounds like something else.
anyhoo.
my ipod ran out of batteries two days ago, so i brought it to my dad and asked him to recharge it when he had a chance (he was doing something on the comp) so i leave and he puts it in and then turns the comp off. so it doesn’t charge, and i am sad. fortunately it’s charged now, thanks to moi and not him.
lyrics time! because i’m bored and have lost nano inspiration.
Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
You been out riding fences for so long now
Oh, you’re a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasing you
Can hurt you somehow
Don’t you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She’ll beat you if she’s able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet
Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can’t get
Desperado, oh, you ain’t gettin’ no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they’re driving you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that’s just some people talking
Your prison is walking through this world all alone
Don’t your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won’t snow and the sun won’t shine
It’s hard to tell the night time from the day
You’re losing all your highs and lows
Ain’t it funny how the feeling goes away?
Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be raining, but there’s a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you, before it’s too late
(178) Really? HA!! That makes me feel better about myself, since I’m pretty bad at telling what lyrics are and even I knew those ones…
Entre le boeuf et l’ane gris
Dors, dors, dors le petit fils
Mille anges divins, mille seraphim
Volent a l’entour de ce grand dieu d’amour
Chorus song stuck in my head. It’s probably spelled wrong. And the spacing is weird. And I have no idea what it means. Why must we sing a French carol and not an Italian one? At least I’d have a two-way dictionary and some idea of how to pronounce it then.
I’m listening to first movement, Shosti 5 (all-state recording from last year), and oh man. Violas. Playing high up. Playing that one melody. OMG. ♥♥♥
Yes, I realize that I’m a geek, thankyouverymuch.
I hear the train a comin’
it’s rolling round the bend
and I ain’t seen the sunshine since I don’t know when,
I’m stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin’ on
but that train keeps a rollin’ on down to San Anton..
When I was just a baby my mama told me. Son,
always be a good boy, don’t ever play with guns.
But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die
now every time I hear that whistle I hang my head and cry..
I bet there’s rich folks eating in a fancy dining car
they’re probably drinkin’ coffee and smoking big cigars.
Well I know I had it coming, I know I can’t be free
but those people keep a movin’
and that’s what tortures me…
Well if they’d free me from this prison,
if that railroad train was mine
I bet I’d move just a little further down the line
far from Folsom prison, that’s where I want to stay
and I’d let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away…
(Fulsom Prison Blues, Johnny Cash, if you didn’t guess)
I was totally just listening to that. No lie. Huzzah for life. It’s messing with my head again.
ooh! I like this one:
I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that phase.
Even your emotions had an echo
In so much space
And when you’re out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn’t because I didn’t know enough
I just knew too much
Does that make me crazy
Does that make me crazy
Does that make me crazy
Probably
And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that’s my only advice
Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are,
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you’re in control
Well, I think you’re crazy
I think you’re crazy
I think you’re crazy
Just like me
My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I wanna be like them
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little it looked like fun
And it’s no coincidence I’ve come
And I can die when I’m done
Maybe I’m crazy
Maybe you’re crazy
Maybe we’re crazy
Probably
(Gnarls Barkley, Crazy)
HELLO MBers And welcome to the first SM2K Music Awards!
The best song by a 50 year old:
WHITE AND NERDY
By Wierd Al Yancovic
Best Song ever:
SEXYBACK!
By Justin Timberlske
Worst Song ever:
LIPS OF AN ANGEL
By Hinder *
Best Love Song:
TU AMORE
By RBD
Gayest song ever:
SMACK THAT*
By Akon & Eminem
* Means I did like it until the radio stations kept playing it over and over and over…
White and nerdy seems overrated to me. That may just be me being rebellious and “everybody-loves-it-so-it-must-be-bad” but while i love it, i don’t love it that much.
180: I can play that. 184 and that too. 186: That sucks. Sorry. But it does.
And White And Nerdy is turning into the overplayed annoying song it’s parodizing. So. stop. playing. it. god. dammit. You americans always overdose.
189-very true, very true.
my dad gets annoyed sometimes when he hears money for nothing by dire straits because he says it was the most overplayed song ever in college.
we all need somebody to leeeeeaaaan on…
they play that for the curtain call
been stuck in head
arrgh!
we were all singing it afterwards too, which didn’t help
*beats head on wall*
anyway
out cometh trusty ipod to solve that
and since i feel like it, y’all get the lyrics of the first song that comes on.
that’d be…gypsies in the palace. whee!
“In days of old, when knights were bold,
And journeyed from their castles,
Trusty men were left behind,
Knights needed not the hassles.
They helped themselves to pig and peach,
And drank from King’s own chalice.
Oh, it was a stirring sight
These gypsies in the palace.”
“And as I told my friend Zachary Richard, when you leave home, some things never change.”
“Hit it!”
So long boss, knock ’em dead, don’t you worry ’bout a thing
I wish that we could come along, we’d love to hear you sing
The limo’s here, your bags are packed
The list is by the phone
Me and Snake will watch your place, treat it like our own
Look at all this liquor
Look at all this food
It’s only gonna go to waste
We’re not really being rude
But the good stuff’s in his closet, I swear he wouldn’t mind
Hell we’ll just shoot the lock off, I do it all the time
We’re gypsies in the palace, He’s left us here alone
The Order of the Sleepless Knights
Will now assume the throne
We ain’t got no money, we ain’t got no right
But we’re gypsies in the palace, we got it all tonight
There’s damsels in distress up there
And we got all this beer
We’ll free them from their condos
Bring ’em over here
We’ll show them his gold records
Play his music loud
We’ll party just like Bubba does
We’ll do the old man proud
We’re gypsies in the palace, there ain’t no wrong or right
We’re gypsies in the palace, and a’ goin’ wild tonight
He’s the greatest guy to work for, man he’s really cool
Hey Snake this party’s gettin’ dull
Throw someone in the pool
Let’s all take our clothes off and form a conga line
Watch out for that broken glass, hey Snake we need more wine
We’re gypsies in the palace, there ain’t no wrong or right
We’re gypsies in the palace, and we’re raisin’ hell tonight
Hi there boss, what’s goin’ on
You say you’re coming WHEN?
I’ll send Snake out to pick you up tomorrow night at ten,
OKAY!
Everybody outta here, this joint is closin’ down
We gotta find someone to clean this up
He’s comin’ back to town
Hi there boss we waxed your car
We raked and mowed your lawn
We couldn’t find enough to do
In the short time you were gone
Man it sure is peaceful here, you’ve really got it all
And if we ever hit the road again, give me and Snake a call
We’re gypsies in the palace, he’s left us here alone
The Order of the Sleepless Knights
Will now assume the throne
We ain’t got no money, we ain’t got no right
But we’re gypsies in the palace, we got it all tonight
189: Hey, I like it. To each thier own.
But you’re right about the ODing. *coughobesityepidemiccough*
The oding happens all the time. It’s the reason that corporate companies can sell a bunch of crap so easily. The single gets played on the radio or mtv over and over again until everyone’s addicted to it. Then they have to buy it.
(166) I love that song. But then it got all popular, and started being overplayed. As everything is, as FS said. But I like that song because of
1) the pulsing bass
2) the guy’s voice- holy hummus, a singer who actually hits some notes with clarity, instead of this pathetic, sctrachy, whiny stiff you get most of the time.
3) the lyrics, because they work so well with the song.
Ya know, Gnarls Barkley is actually just 2 guys? A DJ who does all the instrumental stuff and a singer.
I saw this awesome electric guitar version of the classical peice Canon on YouTube. And Baba O’Reilly on the keyboard.Must find sheet music.
172- Violin.
193- Pachobel’s Canon? Gah.. talk about overplayed pieces.. The cellist has a total of eight different notes, played over and over again in sequence, for the entire freaking piece, did you know that?
193: And you know how those types of bands work? They sit in front of a computer using automatic rythms and sticking in various instrumental samples so that no one actually has to play anything. Then the DJ pushes the ‘play’ button.
Ok, so the “undead thread” reminder disappeared and you all forgot. So how about a version 3? This is probably my favourite topic, but I can’t talk to myself, dammit!
Now listening to 100 Years by Five for Fighting. It’s a great song, but it makes me feel so sad, hypochondriac-ish, and wanting to cry. Which is why I only listen to it, like, once a week.
I recently bought Tenacious D: The Pick Of Destiny. Jack Black and Kyle Gass playing kickass acoustic rock. the lyrics are extremely funny, but full of the word “f**k*. So, no-no for all good little american children. You’re better off going to Iraq.
196-well, you could i guess…but that’s ok, we’ll talk to you.
My ipod died today in latin! In the middle of Pinball Wizard! I was so mad. I forgot to recharge it after all the theaterness. :'( but it’s charging now.
198-the good little american children are forced to listen to bad rap. No worries.
China might do operatic rap for the talent show. We told her she totally should. That would be so funny.
Haha, poor bill…her mom told her that she wanted a particular Pink Floyd song played when she died (i forget which one) and so now every time bill listens to it she gets all depressed.
I want Sonata Arctica’s Draw Me played during my funeral… Check it out, beautiful song…
And you should really go check out the Tenacious D, I’m sure wal-mart carries a clean version full of beeps. But if you really want to laugh your arse off get the explicit version.
Now, two questions to the GAPAS:
1: can we get a part three as soon as we reach 200 posts? (Oh, look at that! what a coincidence…)
2: Do I have your permission to use the word “f***k” to quote Tenacious D songs and make everyone laugh?
189, 198- Are you saying you’re not American?
200- Whats wrong with saying F**K?
201- besides the fact that it’s generally regarded as an obsenity and vulgar and not suitable for little children and that it’s stupid to use profanity just to be funny and cool and stuff like that?
Just write it like you did.
My little brother runs screaming whenever he here Bohemian Rhapsonady by Queen. Hehehe….Thank God for surrond sound.
I love bohemian rhapsody!
i just put on Cats and some more styx (because of course i don’t have enough styx…) but i had to do some tricksy things with spaceage and it decided to reload everything. Mrahr.
I like Coldplay, Butterfly Boucher, some country, some jazz, clazacal, wee, actually I like mostly anything except rap. I don’t like rap. Or metal, to much. I end up liking the openers that are mostly instumental a lot but not really the screaming and yelling… I havn’t heard much, though. I did listen to a band FS suggested(elvelute or somthing, I’m totally lost on the spelling) that was pretty good. I like the instuments a lot but not so much the singing.
Whoooo…..music thread.
I was at a TSO concert on Saturday. My retinas are completely shot. But it was brilliant. And much better live than on the CDs. Well, the opera singer was a little off at first, but completely made up for it. The lighting was amazing. When they played A Last Illusion [my favourite piece of theirs] the strobe lights perfectly matched the beat of the music, and made me wish I wore sunglasses.
Not to mention the pyrotechnics! In pretty colours. Complete with sparks of what seemed like Mg. Ouch. It was so worth it. Especially because I got a guitar pick from one of the musicians *SQUEE*
They had great stage presence, too. They were so into the music, it was great. And the lead guitarist and the electric violinist did kicks and hurdles that put my school’s second-in-the-state cheerleading squad to shame. And the bass player had amazing hair. I am so jealous. Just had to say that.
Queenie’s Questionaire for Musers
1.What was the last album you bought?
—Something with Celtic music and flutes and nature sounds…
2.What are you listening to right now?
—Coin-Operated Boy by the Dresden Dolls. Terribly catchy.
3.Whose concert did you go to last?
—Battle of the Bands at my school on Wednesday. It sucked.
4.What are your Top 5 most hated songs?
—Oh, a rant! Yay!
Anything AC/DC or Led Zep, excluding the Immigrant Song, but only because it makes mythology references. I’m such a mythology buff it’s crazy.
5.And your Top 5 most liked?
—Can’t choose, so I’ll take a random five from my iPod:
*hits shuffle*
How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) by Marvin Gaye
Le Bel Age by Pat Benatar
Hammer to Fall by Queen
100 Percent by Angelspit
Fire On High by the Electric Light Orchestra
6.What covers of songs did you like best?
—TMBG’s Why Does the Sun Shine? (The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas)…..
7.What band/artist apparel do you own?
—I don’t know….the last t-shirt I got was from the TSO concert…
8.What time of the day do you listen to music?
—All the time, except for during class….mostly…..
9.What players do you have?
—iPod, 30GB, picture and video enabled, black
Headphones?
—The ones that came with my iPod, and SONY Dynamic Stereo Headphones MDR-V150. Which I got really cheap at Wal-Mart ages ago. But they work well.
10. What radio do you listen to?
—Pandora, if at all.
New question: What was the first album you ever purchased?
For me it was seriously a Best of Beethoven compilation. No joke.
96- (Penty) Get a rhyming dictionary?
About Evanescence- I love the songs that are just Amy and the piano, but the rest does not strike me.
117/126- Eew, I hate that. Most of those people are too young to have actually been at those concerts, too!!! And ripped jeans? I have a pair of jeans that I’ve owned since the ninth grade that are only a bit tattered at the bottoms of the legs. Which happens within a month of my owning a pair of pants. Pathetic. Actually, the only time I have ever gotten holes in my jeans was when I slid down the carpeting in my hallway. In like fourth grade. I had scabs on my knees for months.
156-157- I love Nymphetamine, and some of the more melodic, older songs.
164- It’s great to know that about HIM, indeed. One of my cousins is obsessed with them. It’s quite sad, especially because she’s a self-labeled “vegan skinbird.” Last year, I had to sit through rendition after rendition of her every HIM concert experience. It was unhealthy.
180- One of my all-time favourite songs. I am trying to manage it on the piano, but school and NaNo has eaten my life…so…I hardly have time to practice.
187- I loathe Lips of an Angel. From the first time I heard it, I have hated it. Get Stoned [I think that was the name] is even worse.
205- I love Styx!
206- Daylight by Coldplay is soooooo magical. Love that song!
And classical music is the pwnage. I’ve been to quite a few classical concerts performed by my state’s philharmonic orchestra. And will gladly admit it.
Swear off MTV, VH1….the lot of it. PBS sometimes does broadcast good concerts, though. I nearly died laughing when they ran an old ABBA show.
Big Band and Blues are awesome. Benny Goodman is my hero.
YouTube had a Butterfly Boucher video…she’s pretty good, I guess…
I found two of the bands FS suggested. Doing a minimum of searching. Hammerfall, and the one who’s name I can’t spell but is the word for the souls of warriors off to Valhalla. Catchy to the nth power.
My mythology buff kicking in.
Anyway, you should all try John Denver. Particularly Eagles and Horses. It’s been one of my favourite songs since the second grade.
Song you should all listen to right now: Wild Thing, by the Troggs. Have you ever seen them [as in a picture]? It makes the song even more hillarious.
okay, so how on earth does one do upbow spiccato? I just can’t get it.. argh.. well, I can get it sort of sometimes but I can’t control how fast it goes and it only lasts for one or two notes and I don’t think I’m doing it right…
sorry, staccato, not spiccato.
TSO concert??? I’m so totally jealous… You should however listen to some Savatage, it’s the guys who write all the TSO stuff, the singer and the guitarists.
210- Schveetness. I shall do that immediately.
Splendid!
Okay, I shall try to introduce a new topic.
Because we’ve pretty much been discussing what music we like. And a bit of what we don’t like. So.
Questions:
1. Do you sing? Elaborate.
2. Do you play an(y) instrument(s)? If so, which instrument(s)?
3. …And how long have you been playing it?
4. And are you attempting to learn any new instruments?
5. Do you write song lyrics? If so, how and what kind?
6. Do you write music? If so, how, how often, for what instrument, and what kind?
7. Do you improvise when playing? [anything, be it original or not]
SMs questionaire:
1: Yes. I sing thrash, low power metal, and death metal vocals.
2: I play guitar. And I’m bloody good at it.
3: 2 years. But I’m better than the guitarist in our band, who’s been playing for 4 years. I’m also totally modest.
4: Nope.
5: I make up lyrics or poems in my head, then write them down. for poems I use correct metric structure, correct amount of sillables, etc. I write sopngs about death, decomposing, rebirth, religion and politics.
6: I write riffs and melodies for guitar.
7: I improvise all the time. that’s how I write a good riff, you improvise something, and if it sounds good, it sticks. Also during solos. Find the right key and rip!
and is that “splendid” referring to Savatage?
1. Do you sing? Elaborate.
eh, yeah, but not seriously- basically just along with CDs, whatever music’s playing in my head, etc.
2. Do you play an(y) instrument(s)? If so, which instrument(s)?
Violin. Viola, to some extent as well. Kazoo, hammered dulcimer, guitar, thumb piano badly. I know where the notes are on a piano.
3. …And how long have you been playing it?
10 years, for violin. I’m decent at it- I placed 2nd at all-state, but a lot of the good people didn’t try and I’ll probably not be able to keep that in the seating auditions.
4. And are you attempting to learn any new instruments?
currently, no.
5. Do you write song lyrics? If so, how and what kind?
nope, except I did a takeoff on Back in the USSR for Chem class.
6. Do you write music? If so, how, how often, for what instrument, and what kind?
Not recently.
7. Do you improvise when playing? [anything, be it original or not]
yeah, haven’t had time to recently..
214-
1. Yes. I made a CD w/ my friend when I was 8 and I have been in about a gazzillion musicals.
2. Piano and the hammered dulcimer.
3. Piano since I was four, and hammered dulcimer since a year ago.
4. I’m going to try guitar over the summer.
5. Yes, mostly bubblegum pop and sappy country songs.
(continued from last post)
6. Random little ditties for the piano and sometimes but rarely music for my lyrics.
7. No, I’m not that good.
212-
1. Yes. I Totally rock.
2. Yes. French horn, harmonica.
3. FH- a year or two. H- As far as I can remember.
4. Guitar. I can rock out on a C.
5. Yes. Slow songs.
6. Yes. French horn. Also slow junk.
7. Yes. Constantly. I can’t play a song the “right” way.
Whee, people responded. *happy dance*
I probably should have filled it out, too, eh?
213- You are probably the most modest person I know. xD. In a positive way, though. And, yes, the “splendid” did refer to Savatage.
214- Impressive. And I love the word, “kazoo!” What was your takeoff on Back in the USSR about? The elements? Reactions? Stoichiometry?
215/6- Dude, stick with the piano. I wanted to quit one year and am so glad that I did not. Though I have been through manymany teachers. The current one is awesome. Seriously, try improvising, too.
217- Harmonica. That’s hard. Like to just get one note. Kudos to you. I applaud your answers to the last three.
1. Do you sing? Elaborate.
—Rarely. I was in chorus in my old school. Alto. Really quiet, but that’s because I’m really shy offline. And I sing the lumberjack song regularly…
2. Do you play an(y) instrument(s)? If so, which instrument(s)?
—Piano. I can do flute and violin, too, but I rarely play them. And recorder, but that doesn’t count.
3. …And how long have you been playing it?
—Piano, about 11-12 years. Violin, since 4th grade, and flute, since fifth.
4. And are you attempting to learn any new instruments?
—Guitar. I’m horrible, and jump up every ten seconds going, “Oow! My fingers!” I can play a grand total of two songs decently.
5. Do you write song lyrics? If so, how and what kind?
—Yeah. Mostly depressing stuff. About insanity, death, and water. To meter. I count and use a rhyming dictionary every once and a while.
6. Do you write music? If so, how, how often, for what instrument, and what kind?
—Cabaret-type music for the piano, often. Occasionally, short melodies in minor keys.
7. Do you improvise when playing? [anything, be it original or not]
—Yeah. Huzzah for the recording feature in my synthesizer. And I screw with left-hand chords whenever I play my lessons…
218- moles- it was for mole day. so it had stp and 6.02×10^23 and avogadro and happy fluffy little bunnies.
Lovely. That number is so convenient. Especially when I have to find out the energy emitted by one mole of photons traveling at a wavelength of 234.5nm. Or something cool like that.
That probably does not belong on this thread… but it has seriously altered my brain. Now, I look at lights, thinking, hey, that colour has a frequency of x.xxx times 10^x s^-1. Or something weird like that. I need help.
Anywhoooo, does anyone else here hate playing staccato on the piano when it’s supposed to be piano? Soft and choppy. I hate it. Then long stretches of legato, only to be interrupted once again by pedal-less staccato!!!!!!
Does anyone have piano recitals? Or recitals of anything, for that matter…. But I can only relate to the piano ones. I avoid them as best I can. Someone will always play Fur Elise [too lazy for the umlaut], a little kid will play a shortened version of Beethoven’s ninth, some college-bound dude with slicked hair will play a ten-page song that repeats several times, and, finally, a girl with ridiculously straight hair and a big nose will make a minor error, cry, and run out of the room. Eck. Not fun.
But this is a happy thread full of love, magic, musick, and all sorts of gloriousness. So, now for some happiness!
And more thread-hogging with really long posts.
I like the song that plays when The Sims: Makin’ Magic loads up. The same music that plays in the Magic Town neighbourhood and all. It is so loudly crisp I can barely stand it!
I have CDs of weird music these people at this fair by where I live perform… They are from some place in South America, Peru, I think, and have a cool, ethnic sound. Lately, I’ve been listening to all-instrumental music. Theirs involves flutes. I love the sound of flutes.
And Celtic music plus flutes is awesome, too.
So is distorted, almost-completely-synthesized cyberpunk. Randomness.
I like playing short, modern pieces on the piano. They’re cute, and take about half an hour each to completely learn and memorize. Which is also why I love them. I have an entire book of them, and another rather large volume of short, easy pieces from classic to modern. I seriously just learn them when I’m bored. It’s virtually effortless.
Okay, shutting up now… Or not…
Wow, this thread is filling up quickly. I heart the music threads. One of my five faves. Music, Hot Topics, Random threads, Poetry [though I mostly lurk], and Words&Names. Just in case you [plural] cared. I like saying “you [plural].” But this is probably getting annoying. Do my posts annoy anyone here? I really hope not.
Savatage is amazing. My favourite record is Dead Winter Dead, concept opera about Sarajevo. Also check out Jon Oliva’s Pain, main singer and songwriter for Savatage and TSO doing some solo stuff, he recently released a record called Maniacal Renderings.
Okay, I want to ask for some TMBG albums for christmas. Which ones? I have the User’s Guide, but that’s the only one.. I’m thinking Venue Songs.. What do you guys think?
No idea… any, really. I have the User’s Guide and They Got Lost, and some miscellaneous downloads. I’m a fiend. Get the one with the ABC’s… I dunno…
Blue Man Group is coming to my area in April. I so desperately want tickets, but they aren’t on sale yet, at least to my knowledge…
Questions:
1. Do you sing? Elaborate.
No. And you don’t want me to elaborate. No one else certinly does(my friends are really good singers)
2. Do you play an(y) instrument(s)? If so, which instrument(s)?
Flute! It’s a great instrument. Can beused in band, orcestra, celtic stuff, here’s even a rock and roll flutist out there.
3. …And how long have you been playing it?
Hmm… this is my 5th year. Through school.
4. And are you attempting to learn any new instruments?
No. I wish I could play guitar, it sounds so cool and there are a lot of different kinds.
5. Do you write song lyrics? If so, how and what kind?
Yes, and poems. My song lyrics differ, and I can’t ever seem to finish them.
6. Do you write music? If so, how, how often, for what
instrument, and what kind?
Not often, but somtimes on FinaleNotepad, for flute
7. Do you improvise when playing? [anything, be it original or not]
Yes, mostly when i’m bored and don’t have anything to play.
TMBG? Flood or No!. Even though No! is a kid’s album it’s fr00dy.
1. Do you sing? Elaborate. Not really. Did church choir a bit. Love kareoke and often spontaneously burst into song at random moments. But don’t sing seriously
2. Do you play an(y) instrument(s)? If so, which instrument(s)? piano, violin, trumpet. I want to learn bass guitar this summer, and i still have a dream of learning the sax. XD
3. …And how long have you been playing it? piano i played for 5 years, violin for 2, trumpet for 6
4. And are you attempting to learn any new instruments? bass guitar, hopefully. oh and i’m becoming rather skilled at blowing into my hands which i finally figured out how to do, yay josh. XD
5. Do you write song lyrics? If so, how and what kind? not really no. Friends and i mess around all the time making stuff up but not seriously
6. Do you write music? If so, how, how often, for what instrument, and what kind? nope
7. Do you improvise when playing? [anything, be it original or not] yeah, jazz mostly
218- It’s actually not that hard. I CAN’T FIRCKIN’ BLEND A DARN NOTE! Ahhhhh! Thats probably the hardest thing about it. nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! that was fun.
Probably, but also quite pointless. At least, your need to extend the page sideways was pointless. And mildly annoying. The PoPoPo has given you a ticket. You owe me lots of virtual choklit. Yum.
Sad.. can we have a version 3?
Seventy or so more comments….
Today my Spanish teacher was gushing about a group called Il Divo. Anyone hear of them? I had not. She says that they are amazing, and watched their concert DVD all over Thanksgiving break. *goes off to search for them online, rather apprehensively*
For those of you who still frequent this thread:
Have you heard Berlioz’s Fantastic Symphony? Because it is an amazing piece which I have been in love with since the seventh grade. But you need to read the description of it. Like what all of the sounds mean and all of that.
*random witch cackle*
And Thus Spoke Zoroaster, though I cannot remember the composer. Suffice to say that you have probably heard it before, either in that addictive chicken invader killing game of a few years ago or in recent commercials.
Tomorrow I shall be back with the descriptions of many more wonderful classical to modern pieces.
And everyone knows Handel.
1. Do you sing? Elaborate.
Yes, sort of. I like to sing, I sing in musicals, I’m off key, my voice sounds pretty I’m not the best singer and not in choir or take voice or anything though. I just like to sing and sing in musicals.
2. Do you play an(y) instrument(s)? If so, which instrument(s)?
I would play my violin if it hadn’t broken… the bridge decided to snap in two. I took violin from k-4th grades, my parents made me switch to piano which I played from 4th-7th then in eigth grade I tried flute. Violin is by far my favorite though. I really should get it fixed.
3. …And how long have you been playing it?
well.. off and on not the whole time but eleven years. but actually playing for like maybe three? I’ve just known how for eleven.
4. And are you attempting to learn any new instruments?
no, but I’m teaching myself to play violin better if it weren’t broken
5. Do you write song lyrics? If so, how and what kind?
I try sometimes. I write poems though. I want to write some lyrics for my brother’s band someday
6. Do you write music? If so, how, how often, for what
instrument, and what kind?
On finalenotepad sometimes. Not very often though. Maybe I’ll write some over winter break. and usually for violin or harp or random things.
7. Do you improvise when playing? [anything, be it original or not]
yup. I like improvising it’s what i mainly do. I can usually play things I’ve heard before, I’m much worse at playing actual sheet music.
Random question: Baroque, classical or romantic?
For all you Evanescence freaks out there: The Open Door sucks. Fallen was much better. Here’s a review taken from metalreviews.com, a respectable professional reivew site:
“The Open Door should perhaps be accredited to Amy Lee rather than Evanescence; throughout the album the rest of the band just don’t seem to get a look-in. The whole album is a platform for Amy to whine like a turbo about her poor life, aiming her wrath at all those who have pissed her off: Ben Moody – ex lead guitarist, co-founder and co-songwriter; ex bassist William Boyd; ex boyfriend Seether’s Shaun Morgan (Call Me When You’re Sober, I wonder who that’s about then?) and a fan who stalked her for a while. I know many, many songs are written from the heart but virtually a whole album full of self-pitying, oh poor me maudling makes you want to give her a good shake and tell her to get over herself. Even though guitarist Terry Balsamo gets recognized as co-songwriter, you have to wonder where his contribution is exactly. And here’s me been under the impression that there is no ‘I’ in ‘Band’.
Many bands’ second albums don’t quite match up to their debut; be it because they have decided to take a different direction; haven’t had the time to let loose their creativity because of touring; been under pressure from their label or myriad other reason. Then again, there are many band’s whose second album puts them on the musical map – Trivium anyone. The Open Door is strange in that it is more of the same of debut Fallen but stripped, shaved and pared down to the bare bones. Apart from Amy taking front and centre, (on her high horse) she keeps the attention on herself by dueting with her piano, even though more credit should probably be given to Mozart or Beethoven than to any original Amy Lee piano arranging. Gone are the crunchy, chugging guitar riffs and the soaring, memorable choruses; in their place are some electronic orchestra, programming and sampling, courtesy of DJ Lethal. When I hear the words electronic, programming and sampling to describe musical content and somebody called DJ something-or-another, ‘Nu-Metal’ pops into my head, and if Nu-Metal has been dying a slow death for a number of years now, why dump it in your new album? Perhaps the lack of serious guitaring is due to Terry Balsamo having a stroke aged 32, which he puts down to long-time headbanging. Even though, the guitaring sounds like he wandered into the studio, bashed out a few power chords into Pro-Tools and they were then copied and pasted wherever required. In fact, that goes for Bass and Drums as well, it sounds like they played the minimum they could get away with relying on Amy and her piano to carry the album.
Fallen went multi platinum shifting over 14.5 million to Pseudo-Goth Mallrats worldwide. Fallen was their entry record to what they thought was Metal, as many who should have known better labelled it. Many of these Mallrats have now matured and advanced into the realm of genuine Goth / Gothic and other Metal bands and other female fronted bands but will probably blindly buy The Open Door just through loyalty to their first ‘Metal’ band. That and your hormone fuelled fan-boy, or fan-girl lusting after the delectable Ms Lee. However, because they have progressed on to heavier bands, I think many of them are going to be disappointed that The Open Door doesn’t cut it for them any more. As they are presenting themselves on The Open Door, hold Evanescence up to bands such as Tarja era Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, To-Mera et al you will find them sorely lacking.
While writing this review, (end November 06) The Open door has went platinum in the US. Somehow I can’t seem to get out of my mind the kind of person who is going to buy this album. If you think back to all the under-age drinking parties, open-house parties and other parties where copious amounts of hooch were consumed, have you ever noticed that invariably, just before everything goes pear-shaped, there always seems to be a girl sitting on the stairs, bawling her eyes out, uttering things like “Why?â€, “The Bastard!â€, “But I love him.â€, “The Bitch!†etc. She’s always surrounded by so-called friends trying to tell her that He / She / It is not worth it yet secretly breathing a sigh of relief that they are not in this poor wretch’s shoes. They are the people who are going to devour this record. They’re gonna lock themselves in their room bawling into their teddy soaking up the ‘Poor Me’ lyrics and feel so much better that even the enormously successful Amy Lee gets dumped on and see her as some kind of kindred spirit. I suppose it takes a great deal of courage to air your personal problems, in song, to so many people, but to be honest, when your biggest problems are a couple of failed relationships and being hero worshipped by fans, you get to thinking “Get over yourself girl, be thankful for what you’ve got! namely an under-worked band that could produce some awesome music if you let go your selfish need to have everybody feeling sorry for you!â€
Okay, I know I’m gonna get slated for this review but c’mon, you know Evanescence is not just Amy Lee, and they can do much better than this as a BAND! Evanescence started of as Amy Lee, Ben Moody and some session musicians. If this album is anything to go by Evanescence is going to be Amy Lee…… Oh, and some other musicians if she doesn’t loosen the reins some. It’s even gone as far as their website where I had to do a whole lot of digging to find out who else done what in the band. Hopefully she’ll have got over herself for the next album and Evanescence will be back on track.”
We are now two pages back and people stop posting. NOT GOOD!
If people find this thread still interesting, they post. When others see the comment over on the side of the front page, they click. Then they post. It should keep going for a little while at least…
In that case, someone please react to the Evanescence review that I find very controversial!
I’ve never heard any Evanescence, so i really can’t…
Ok, anyone who does.
1. Do you sing? Elaborate.
You can’t be in school chorus and school band at the same time, but I’m in select chorus. I auditioned in sixth grade. We do community service stuff and sing where we’re asked to,which lately seems to be everywhere. I’m 1st soprano.
2. Do you play an(y) instrument(s)? If so, which instrument(s)?
Trombone, this starts my fifth year, in school. I’m in the school jazz band, school brass ensemble, and school eighth grade band (of course). And I’m in All-County band.
3. …And how long have you been playing it?
see above
4. And are you attempting to learn any new instruments?
No, are you crazy? I have little enough time as is.
5. Do you write song lyrics? If so, how and what kind?
No.
6. Do you write music? If so, how, how often, for what instrument, and what kind?
No.
7. Do you improvise when playing? [anything, be it original or not]
Not usually.
Tree-lighting ceremony today! We get to actually be a marching band again for a day!
We suck at concert band, in case you didn’t know. that’s why it’s so exciting. Marching band’s much kewler.
For the most part I have given up finding people in daily life who have similar musical tastes. For every person who likes MCR (while I have no problem with the band) there’s someone like me who would rather listen to Antic Cafe or Remioromen. Sigh. No one bothers to read my posts anyway so it’s not like it matters.
Anyway. Survey from a bit back because I like surveys.
Queenie’s Questionnaire for Musers
1.What was the last album you bought?
Roentgen by HYDE. I love your solo works, Haido~
2.What are you listening to right now?
Natsukage- Suga Shikao It;s such a nice slow song. Very relaxing. ^^
3.Whose concert did you go to last?
T_T I have yet to attend a concert, because all the bands I like are not American.
4.What are your Top 5 most hated songs?
I don’t like using ahte and music in the same sentence, but I really don’t like all these shallow songs that are so popular that are just about money and sex and partying or whatever.
5.And your Top 5 most liked?
As of right now, since it changes so much:
– Gekkou- Asian Kung-Fu Generation
– Marmalade- Gackt
– Caress of Venus- L’Arc~en~Ciel
– Escapism- Antic Cafe
– Konayuki- Remioromen
6.What covers of songs did you like best?
Hyde’s “Lucy in th Sky with Diamonds”
7.What band/artist apparel do you own?
None, unfortunately for myself.
8.What time of the day do you listen to music?
All the time.
9.What players do you have?
iPod shuffle, soon to be some other form of iPod with more space.
10: Headphones?
Hmm, JVC of some sort. Non-Apple, though.
10. What radio do you listen to?
Nothing. I do use radio.blog though,
I’m so jealous of those of you who can actually play the piano and such. I wish I had an aptitude for music.
242- I thought the Beatles did Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Hmm…… :puzzled:
They did. Maybe its a parody-thingy.
234- agreed on your first point as I haven’t read any of the rest of your post (I know, I know, bad e~a) Though come to think of it, I don’t own the open door but what I’ve heard of it’s songs on itunes, I didn’t like. I like Fallen but I wouldn’t call myself an Evanescence nut at all. Hmm… I really need to get some Nightwish. Keeping in mind I liked Fallen (especially the piano voice only songs) what do you guys recommed? (specific songs, bands, I’m up for anything) I also like TMBG, Franz Ferdinand, Matisyahu, soundtracks, Simon and Garfunkle. Now I really should actually read the whole thing…
245: I would recommend any european power metal band. The folk/pagan/viking metal bands are probably to heavy (except Elvenking and Mago De Oz, who are both insanely happy). Although beware the allure of the voice/piano tracks on The Open Door. She even stole stuff from Beethoven and Mozart and didn’t mention them anywhere in the credits, thinking she could get away with it! So we add Amy Lee to the list of persons FS hates. See post 79.
(243) Exactly, the question asked for what “covers” of songs one likes best. This means it’s a song performed by an artist different than the one who originally wrote it/performed it.
HEY! Don’t let this thread die!
248: Non productive comments like that don’t help, you know.
Jesus, my Equilibrium CD arrived today. Turis Fratyr. AWESOME!
(198) I love Tenacious D. I want that album for xmas.
Questions:
1. Do you sing? Elaborate.
Only when I’m alone, because I’m horrible at hitting the right notes.
2. Do you play an(y) instrument(s)? If so, which instrument(s)?
Piano, clarinet, bass clarinet.
3. …And how long have you been playing it?
I’ve played piano 8 years. Clarinet, I played for one year, switched to bass clarinet for 3 years, and now I do both.
4. And are you attempting to learn any new instruments?
Umm, well, I’d like to improve my singing skills and learn to play acoustic guitar, but I haven’t done anything about it yet. I was also thinking about playing tuba in marching band next year.
5. Do you write song lyrics? If so, how and what kind?
No, not often, ‘cept an occasional parody. Well, atually, only done that once.
6. Do you write music? If so, how, how often, for what instrument, and what kind? I wish I did. I have ideas, but no skills. I make songs on GarageBand, but those don’t count as reall music.
7. Do you improvise when playing? [anything, be it original or not]
I learned a little about piano improv from Jazz Band last year…so I try once in a while.
(233) mmm. In my experience…Classical. No, Romantic. No, Classical. Well, it depends. Classical to me seems cleaner, but Romantic can be more gripping. I am I right?
(242) What type of Music are those bands, Axa?
I got to see the NY Philharmonic perform Rachmaninoff’s theme on Paganini. It was excellent. I had fun trying to count the variations. Somewhere around the 15th was the best of the piece. A jewel of melody.
You know what I hate? Mainstream music that they play on radio. Seriously, the standards of music in this country have reached an all time low. By bus driver always plays the radio and I hate it.
250: hmm. TO me it’s a toss up between baroque and romantic. I like the rythmic structure and virtuosity of baroque and the passion and emotion of romanticism.
Tenacious D is awesome, so is the movie. Everyone go watch the Pick of Destiny.
I just figured out that the christmas station is also the classic rock station when it’s not christmas. Sveet, i don’t have to change the dial at all if ipodidderol needs charging.
This thread is kind of dead, isn’t it?
I have to go play at the drexel today. Me and david and andy and a bunch of seniors. Meeeeeeeeeeeep. Oh well, it’s just the marching band stuff. That i can do. I really hope stuart shows up because if he doesn’t i’ll be the only first trumpet there. Double-triple-fourple meep. (that’s probably my fav phrase of chappelle’s “Let’s double-triple-fourple check!”) So yah…
Yes, this thread is dead and buried. But I creep by every night and try to scrape some dirt off of the grave with my bare hands. Decomposing, rotting ideas lie beneath.
I have a random music-related question that three of my friends, my father, and my school band teacher all couldn’t answer satisfactorialy.(sp?)
A trumpet is called a B flat trumpet, yet it’s concert B flat is a C. Why don’t they just call it a B flat if it sounds like one?
45 posts until a new thread is allowed.
What exactly is the question? A trumpet is in the key of B flat, as are clarinets. Flutes are in concert key. Saxes, Baritones, F Horns, other instruments are in different keys. If you call it a B flat, the flutes will have to play differently. We trumpets are just one of the many unfortunate instruments that aren’t in concert key. I know, it makes sense that everything should revolve around the trumpets but whoever made all that up didn’t think so.
Come on, people! Who listens to, or has parents who listen to, Ronnie James Dio?
(257) Sorry FS. Once more, I fail you. Who is this?
Today we watched One by Metallica in Writing and Lit. (We just read Johnny Got his Gun). It was really good!
So the music was awesome, because Metallica, well I don’t know anything about Metallica, but it seemed to me that their drummer was incredible and it had all these really edgy, yet strangely clear guitar riffs and I liked it.
And the video was awesome! They captured the creepyness and despair really well.
(Background info for those who have no idea what I’m talking about;
Johnny Got His Gun is a WWI novel about a guy who loses his legs, arms and face when a bomb goes off, so he can think but can’t talk, hear, sea, smell, taste or move around. There was a movie made out of it, and then Metallica did a song and music video with clips from the movie)
*double post*
I will attempt to explain, but shall probably fail because I’m not even sure if I know what I”m talking about.
Different instruments are in different keys. This means that the same pitch has a different name for different instruments. A B flat on a trumpet is a C on a piano. This made things very hard for conductors trying to tune up bands. So they decided that key of C, which is what the piano is in, would be concert key. Then, when the conductor says “play a C”, you don’t have fifty different instruments saying “well who’s C, yours or mine?” Everyone just knows that the conductor is talking about concert C. Unfortunately, as Ebeth pointed out, this is sad for instruments like trumpets and clarinets, because they have to learn to quickly transpose in their heads.
So Concert B flat on a trumpet is called C because on the trumpet because that is what it’s called, but the pitch of the note is a concert B flat. I have no idea why it has to be so complicated, except that that’s just sort of the way life is.
Last night I learned how to play the autoharp. It pwns.
*confused* So wait, on band instruments, “b-flat” or “a” or “f-sharp” doesn’t automatically mean the same note on everything?
Okay, so all of you (especially those of us who play weddings/cello) need to go on you-tube and search for pachelbel rant. It is hilarious. And true.
258: Great video, even better song. Might be Metallica’s best. You should check out the recording they did with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. It’s called “Symphony And Metallica”.
dammit forgots to change the name.
There’s a new kickass Rebellion video on their website. Go check it out.
Meh. Finally back. I blame chem and NaNo. So much for my last post [231]. I’m a fiend.
233- Any and all. Okay, I like baroque the best.
237- *reacts* I heard the same thing from a friend who’s friend got the CD early [bootleg, probably]. Evanescence pretty much died with out Moody. Therefore, I didn’t get the new album. But if Amy Lee ever did a solo album with just pianos and vocals, I would consider getting it.
257- Erm, no.
258- For whatever reason, I like St. Anger. Just throwing that out there. The song, that is, not the entire album…
Wheee, posting. And now it’s time to eat.
By the way, I saw a Hammerfall album in Best Buy the other day. While the store was playing I Don’t Feel Like Dancing by the Scissor Sisters. It’s been in my head ever since. That song is so horribly catchy.
263: First, St. Anger is horrible. The drums are awful, it sounds like he’s drumming on tin cans. The backing vocals are off (Kirk, you’re a good guitar player, but you CANNOT SING!). The song is 7 minutes of just the same thing over and over again. ugh.
Hammerfall, on the other hand, is awesome. Buy every single album you see, except for maybe Chapter IV: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken. My faves are the latest (Threshold) and the third, Renegade.
And as for Dio, go ask your parents. He sang for Deep Purple side projects Elf and Rainbow, on two great Black Sabbath albums, Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules, and under the nae DIO as a solo artist. He is the ROCK!!!!!!
Two music threads open at once? *cackles evilly* And after I post this, the GAPAs will realize their mistake and fix it, and I’ll be the last to post (or maybe second-to-last, if they say something)!!!
Nothing? Was it moderated? I thought everything was read by a GAPA before it was allowed. Or is this thread about to be closed? *searches for ways to exploit loophole*
why hello.
i have been notified by frigidsymphony that this thread still exists.
sup?
ooh.
sorry for the double post.
hammerfall pwnz!@!!!
follow te sign of the crimson thunder…….
and whats wrong with chapter V…..etc.? blood bounds one of my favorites.
257-dio? you mean the people who keep coming up on itunes when i search for dream evil? (it sounds like iron maiden, but worse. not that iron maiden is bad.)
O_o Why aren’t we using the new Music thread?
I got The Crane Wife for Christmas. Now that The Decemberists have been on The Colbert Report, have any of you heard them?
i had a band concert last night. i don’t think we failed quite as badly as we thought we would. But still. Jazz band was good though. Jazz band’s always good. We just pwn. (actually it’s because the only people in it actually want to be in it…but that’s still pwnage)
Did i mention my recent discovery of phish? Actually it wasn’t terribly recent and i only found three songs, one of which i ♥ one of which is good, and one of which is ok. but still. oh and in looking up the lyrics to something i noticed they did a song called golgi apparatus. If fedner had been online to get it for me, leeny’s and my science project would’ve totally pwned b/c we would have played it in the background and gotten all the extra credit. Oh well.
Oh, and crandall tried to make me join full orchestra…she stopped me in the hall and was like “it’s not too late to join if you want to! you’re welcome to join!” i could just feel the nudgenudgewinkwinkness. but i don’t really want to this year…mebbe next year i will. Hecht wants me to do pit for titanic, but no way. pit is kind of hell, plus i’m ushering. Ushering’s so much fun, you don’t really do anything and you get to watch the show for free. Or go in the hallway and mess around with the friends that you forced into servitude (aka “helping out”)
Anyhoo, that’s life, musically. Funfunfun.
on Evenescense(or however you spell that)- I listened to that cd you ranted about, FS… only thing I’ve heard by them. Before your rant I actually thought it was just her as most of the band then random people playing instruments. Not very good, I agree. But I don’t really know that type of music, I have to agree with you that they would do better if they kicked wot’s-her-name of the stage every now and then. I only really slightly liked one song. Forgot which one.
On th other hand, has anyone heard the Blue Man Group cd the COmplex? By the band that plays in those glo-in-the-dark suits in the back. I like it, it’s good(in my opinion).
This is stupid. THERE’S A NEW MUSIC THREAD, PEOPLE!!!! USE IT! That’s kinda why the GAPAs made a new one *hinthint*
257-Um…no one. I would rather deal with Mike Smith. And that’s saying something.
This is the one that was linked…but whatevs…
223-never actually seen bmg. they’re supposed to be good.
