In 2009 we used the Random Thread themes to observe a year of random celebrations. For 2010, as noted on Anchors Aweigh post zero, we are traveling to different eras or events in history. We have some ideas in mind, but we’re open to suggestions. Let us know when/where you’d like to visit.
Patience, Please
This site is under reconstruction and will look strange for a while. We regret the inconvenience.
Russian revolution. I want to see Rasputin decked out in musery.
-A
That would require a little license, as Rasputin died almost a year before the Revolution. It would be something to see, though.
(In college, I won the “Most Bewitching” prize at a Halloween dance for my Rasputin costume. It took hours to stick the beard on with spirit gum and even longer to take it off again. Maybe there’s a photo around here somewhere…)
Rasputin meets Kokopelli?
(Spirit gum, ugh! But Robert as Rasputin would be something to see.)
That’s an interesting thought.
Wait- Okay, the lead-up to it. Not necessarily the actual thing; the unrest. That’s what I was talking about. All the way back to WWI and the inexperienced czar (Alexander? Nicholas? Nicholas was the one Rasputin was supposed to heal, right? Must have been Alexander.) declaring full-on war, which messed everything up for everyone.
That broad, sweeping ‘part’ of the revolution. That’s what I meant.
-A
Well, having up to three threads a month gives us a little room to sweep. Add in KaiYves’s suggestion and we could go from the Russia of the Czars to the Soviets in 3 episodes.
It was Nicholas. He was supposed to heal Alexei.
Mmm. Yeah, I’ll have to be brushing up on this.
-A
Found them! They’re in black-and-white, but maybe that’s appropriate:
I spoke only Russian that evening. But we’re getting off topic…
(For comparison, here’s what I looked like when I wasn’t in costume. That’s a math textbook.)
oh man the socks I am wearing look almost exactly like that, except they have light blue in place of the red
You look sorta like me, except your hair is neater. And I don’t read math textbooks. I read logic textbooks.
Wow.
That’s quite a large difference. Math is awesome, by the way.
Couldn’t do all this — blog, &c — without it!
I have those same socks! Except I think the grey and blue are switched, but that may be the angle of the picture. Nice reading material and fashion (my glasses are a lot like those, except I found them in “women’s”
)! Math rules.
Those were reading glasses. I didn’t need glasses for just walking around.
Not completely off topic, I guess. It’s still time travel…
*dies laughing* That just made my evening.
Wow, you were great as Rasputin. You even look creepy!
I’m thinking maybe something Arabian Nights-inspired from the Mideval Islamic world, something piratical from the 1720s, something Victorian/Edwardian, something Indiana Jones-ish for the turn of the century, and if having two Russian-themed pictures isn’t too much, something like a Soviet propaganda poster.
Indiana Jones is just Uylesses in discise….
That’s genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think the Framing of the American Constitution would offer the Rt. Hon. Bunniful something to work with.
3 – That’s hilarious.
How about Elizabethan England?
What hasn’t been mentioned yet: the future. But then, what sort of future? There’s always the chrome-covered, hovercar type future. And then there’s the post-apocalyptic wasteland future as well.
As for the past, ancient Rome would be shiny.
Good point. How about a world where their is a big dome where everything is perfect and their is hovercars and stuff but then outside things are wasteland of pullotion and discomfort. Scary. But not really very origial.
or, a dystopian type future…
I would love an apocalyptic future image. I’m also picturing a sort of “discovery” of the Americas-era, conquistador graphic, and possibly Amerindians for another graphic that same month.
I’ve always liked colonial times. Also Medieval. And the Renaissance.
Ooh, a Muse Renaissance would actually be pretty cool.
Hm, what else?
Well, for one thing, the ‘Russian Revolution’ idea could be expanded to that entire time period; there was some pretty fascinating stuff there. Or something really, really, ancient. Before Greece. Like Byzantine. Or Babylonian. (Looking up the Byzantine Empire, I find that it’s actually considerably after Greece. But it still has the mystic, otherworldly, air to it that I generally associate with ancient Empires.)
The Beginning.
The End.
I’d like to visit some places that I don’t really know all that much about. China, for example. With all of its many, many dynasties, that’s a pretty lengthy visit right there. And Korea. And Japan. And Angkor Wat. And India.
Traveling to various American civilizations like the Anasazi or the Iroquois Confederation or the Incas would also be cool.
Personally, I like Piggy’s apocalyptic future too. And I’ve always wanted to visit the medieval Islamic empires, for a time when things weren’t so bleak for the Arab world. (*sigh…*)
Actually, just about anything on this thread is good, and I’d be happy with anything really.
We should do the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. You know, invention of steam engine, modernization of Japan…
But the medieval Islamic Empires sound good too. And the Post Apocalyptic future.
12-I like that!!!!
I would like to see what was happening in, say, China, during World War 1 and 2. So, a different place during the same time as something big. I have a big poster in my basement that shows what was happening in Africa while Columbus was traveling to “India.”
Oh, SFTDP, I just saw Enceladus’s “Post Apocalyptic Future” idea. I like that too!
Ooh, feudal Japan would be awesome. The Warring States period, I mean.
How about democracy in Poland?
I agree, there must be a apocalyptic future. And feudal Japan. And Ireland, at some point.
Any particular time in Ireland?
Either the easter uprising (1916)or sometime in the pre-british era.
The Great Potato Famie maybe?
But that would be an awful time to visit!
13 – I like that idea.
I also like feudal Japan.
I like the post-aocalyptic future, too. Maybe there could be one month dedicated to different visions of the future, not just apocalyptic ones.
Hm, several of my ideas seem to be terrifically popular.
What about psychedelic ’60s / ’70s?
Yes! Those pics would pwn. Epically.
Considering some GAPAs I know happened to be Muser age during that period, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it show up on the itinerary somewhere along the way.
Rebecca and I met at Woodstock, you know. *jk*
From the way the older boomers talked in the 1980s, you’d think we were the only two people who weren’t there. My mom probably wouldn’t have allowed her pre-teen daughter to attend even a rock concert…though she did give me the soundtrack album from the movie, much to my astonishment.
“Anyone who claims to remember being at Woodstock was never really there”
When I think of the ’70s, all I think of is Jethro Tull.
A psychedelic theme sounds good to me. maybe around the mid ’60s. That would be cool.
Beatlemania!
All of the ideas on here are nice – I especially like Piggy’s idea for some futuristic theme or ancient Rome.
Perhaps we should do one about the fall of great civilizations/empires? It could be specific (Roman/Byzantine), or we could celebrate/appreciate/talk about all of ’em.
Oh yes, we should do rises of great empires (such as Rome/Byzantine/Islamic) and then do their falls/ declines the next month.
OOOooooooOOOooo, I like that. Maybe just with one pair of months, but not with all of them.
Actually, if we do that, it should be where the first random thread for that month is the rise, and the second is the fall.
I was thinking that it showed multiple rises of different empires in the same month, and then multiple falls the next.
Sounds cool to me!
I think we should go to ancient Greece. I think it’s more intressting than Rome. Or maybe a history of Muse, past.

We’re in ancient Greece at the moment. That’s where the ship is from, the homeland of Urania and those other Muses.
definately
That was my sister! She got on when I was in the other room!!! >:
Regarding the earlier conversation, here’s one GAPA’s brush with psychedelic splendor.

Age 15, photo booth special. Original shirt colors: purple, hot pink, black, and white, I believe. I think it’s one I made myself, or maybe mom did.
Cool!
That looks creepily like my friend O. Really.
Hot pink, white, and black?
Were you bunnified?
Purple, hot pink, white and black.
It’s a really pretty shirt, Rebecca.
Pretty!!!!! I wish it was in color, though…
20-Chad as Steampunk inventor sounds great.
Maybe the early 80’s punk movement? Or Victorian. Or a mixture of both- steampunk!!
4- Is that Atticus Finch?
I see that! Robert, you looked like a young Atticus Finch!
Are we limited to real places and times? The bridge of the Enterprise, Magrathea, and a galaxy far, far away would all be cool to see…
But for real places and times, the ancient Maya (Mesoamerica) are awesome.
And 30 – I would LOVE to see Chad as a steampunk inventor.
Are you new here? I haven’t seen you before, and my friend who I convinced to go on today in art class said they’d call enself Artemis.
Anyway, Have some pies!

Well, it appears that you’re a neophyte. *pies* Welcome to Museblog.
I’m speller73, resident math geek and lover of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You seem to understand the ways of MuseBlog pretty well. Keep using proper grammar and and a minimum of exclamation points. *pies again for good measure*
Yes, let’s keep these to actual history. But history includes cultural artifacts. For example, “Star Trek” could be considered a phenomenon of the 1960s. (Yes, it has continued in various forms ever since, but the 1960s set it in motion.)
Ancient Sumeria.
Wait, Robert, you can speak Russian?
-A
What about time traveling back and meeting your parents? That would be scary and awesome at the same time! (Scawesome?)
That is like the movie “Back to the Future”!
I adore those movies.
Those movies are awesome!
