Random Thread: “Interesting Times”

According to popular belief, “may you live in interesting times” was an ancient Chinese curse. As far as we know, there’s no documented proof that that’s true. China has long been an interesting place, however, and it is February’s destination for our random threads’ yearlong excursion through history.

(By the way, the Chinese New Year falls on February 14. Happy Year of the Tiger!)

    • This was actually done in the old-fashioned way, except using digital media. It was painted stroke by stroke in ArtRage, using a textured “canvas” to mimic the silk used in the painting I chose as a model, “Elegant Gathering in the Apricot Garden.” The original painting, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Here’s what it looks like:

Oh, and Robert (on the last thread): Yeah, I know it’s a police box, not a phone box, but I figured in this (imagined) conversation with my dad that he would be like “Huh, what’s a police box?” and so decided saying it’s “like a phone box” instead of “It’s a police box” would probably be simpler…. Of course, the whole conversation was made up, so I guess it wouldn’t have mattered if Dad knew, or not.

So apparently, there’s an organization (or at least a website) called Devil Bunnies, which warns of the upcoming bunny menace… :)

Also, I suspect that quite a bit of non-Muse-related bunny fear stems from Buffy, where one of the characters (Anya) has an irrational fear of bunnies…

Alice~ School for Scandal is a delightful play, I’d recommend reading sometime. It’s great fun, clever, witty, fast-paced (for the 18th century) and has some of the absolute best one-liners you’re likely to find anywhere.

Oi peeps, there’s something interesting and funky going on here on the ‘blog.
At the bottom of the page it says

Happy February! The first month of 2010 went by really fast. Eek.

The stats on the bottom of who’s on the site are so cool! I just logged in and logged back out just to test it, and sure enough, the speed is really fast and up to date too. Right away it recognized me as a member. :) I feel special now. :) And its sort of interesting to see the number of people that are on at one time, since I never really knew before…

In other news, I moved up two chairs in band! I was 9th out of about 20 before, and now I’m 7th! I’m also playing first clarinet music now, which is a lot harder. But I’m excited to do it! Most of the music is in a much higher range, which I’m not used to though….ick. I prefer the lower notes which are easier (or at least, for me) to get out.

There is still snow on the ground here, but most of it has melted. I didn’t expect a snow day out of this anyway, so I don’t really care. Its still cold though…

And I got my January Muse magazine. *squee*

Oh, and a spork. Which only makes sense in context. Context being my sister’s teacher sent them a packing list for when they go to Paris this spring–one of the items on the list was a spork. My sister emailed my parents and me, asking what the purpose of this item was, and we emailed back all sorts of random ideas. I think we wound up with the sporks being to gouge out eyeballs (and eat them) and to eat a person’s brains with……But, yeah, now i have a spork. Roommate, beware! Mwahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!

Presumably it means Feather doesn’t know what Chad is talking about, but that is not clear. It could just as easily mean Feather doesn’t know what Feather is talking about…..

    YES! SCHOOL TODAY!

Minions: Ooh, I like your hair! Look, I’m wearing make-up!
Teacher who will be here 3 weeks then we’ll have my RE teacher: *lectures everyone* Guess what you’ve got first! Maths!
    Me: YAY! MATHS!!!
    Populars:
    Teacher: *hands out timetables*
All: *start screaming at each other about their classes**total insanity*

Maths  : So many people were moved up from the other classes that I wondered if I was in the right classroom when I first came in. I know have sort-of-friends in my class, but they’re not in the group I was allocated. My teacher is strict but nice if you like maths, which of course I do. She put us in groups by looking at our marks last year, so I’m the ‘smart girl’ in my group. I’m not sure if that’s bad or not. Mrs S also says maths is going to be hard this year, which would be nice.

PE  : Plenty of the Minions to sit with, and we’re starting with health. In case you haven’t guessed, I suck at PE. But otherwise it’s not too bad.

Science  : The teacher is just like my old teacher. No-one I’d croos the road to avoid is in my classes, but I now have no friends in science. Not. Good. But hey, at least we’re doing Chemistry and Physics.

French:  , , non-stupid  , :yay: , , and every happy emoticon there is. Same teacher, same classroom, same wonderful friends, everyone I ever disliked from my old class gone. I thought my face was going to split open, I was so happy.

Multimedia  : My friend from French class is in this class. The class itself looks good, and my teacher seems to be nice.

    More tomorrow!

English :???: : My teacher is insane. She is OBSESSED with David Tennant. Okay, so he’s not ugly like Robert Pattinson, but he’s not my idea of hot. And she likes Twilight. She’s anything but strict, but she made us sit alphabetically so she could get to know our names, so I’m nowhere near G. And sitting up front. She asked us all what our favourite foods and TV shows were.
Me: Hi, I’m _____, and I like Skittles and chocolate and Doctor Who.
Ms G: Do you like David Tennant or Doctor Who in general?
Me:  Uh… just Doctor Who in general.
But I’ll overlook the Twilight thing if it means I actually get a nice English teacher.

Religion  : None of my friends are in this class. Science is one thing, but religion is so boring, I don’t know how I’ll survive this year. I really wanted to put my head on the desk and go to sleep today, and if I didn’t sit up front, I might actually have done it. Everyone hates Mrs M, and if she’s as bad as they say she is, expect to see me on the Rants and Plaints thread. Hopefully she’ll be too busy yelling at the usual suspects to pick on me.

Financial Literacy  : Mrs P also teaches history. She is not going to tell us which pieces of work are actually going to be marked until we’ve done them. I didn’t pay enough attention when I picked my seat and ended up right in front of her desk. But J’s in my class and it doesn’t look too boring.

I’m still a bit hesitant, though. He just….I dunno. He’s not how I picture the Doctor, but then, the Doctor has had so many different incarnations that I guess you can’t really say one way or the other what he looks like. It took me awhile to adjust to the First Doctor, and over a season before I actually decided he wasn’t a heartless jerk like he came off as at first (that is, it took over 42 episodes for me to decide I like him alright).

Actually, the ‘steady land claim’ thing could depend. Basically in China’s history it’s been broken up into different warring states, only to be unified again later on, etc etc. Every time it’s ‘unified’, the shape of the empire changes. At one time the states were restricted to one area in the east, while the Han Dynasty for example stretched all the way to the Middle East, almost to Europe.

This is depressing. After a long, hard day at school I feel so cynical and pessimistic. I can’t wait to graduate. Please, please let college be better than this. The class that I was planning on dropping this semester can’t be dropped, according to my vice-principal. But she said earlier that it would be possible to drop it once the new semester began, or at least implied that. I really, really need that period free to do community service in, because my school requires 200 hrs of community service and I don’t think I’ve done half that. I graduate in what, May, June? And if I don’t have my hours done by then I’m not graduating.

Also one of my teachers has a really unfunny sense of humor and makes off-color jokes about stuff that’s not funny at all. And I can’t tell if he’s joking or not sometimes, because he says everything with a grin. I end up really, really confused and offended by what he says sometimes. I should probably tell him this, but i have no idea how.

Then there’s the usual stuff with homework and papers and going to bed at four in the morning at wrecking my sleeping pattern…

Yay! A Random Thread dedicated to China! I think I’m closest to China out of everyone on here…well, I’m practically in China. Kind of. Sort of. Not really…well, yeah.

Anyway, we actually have a week off from school for Chinese New Year! HA! And I’m going to the mainland to visit my grandparents and cousins and various extended family members! China during Chinese New Year is AMAZING. There’s always a road blocked off during this period and people come and sell stuff, which can be CNY-related but sometimes isn’t, and the market stalls stretch on for miles and miles AND IT’S ALL AMAZINGLY CHEAP. Even by Hong Kong standards. Which is already extremely cheap by US standards. Anyway, I’m just happy that we get a week off. Our school follows an American curriculum/school year/school calendar, so we get all their Christmas, Easter holidays (Western holidays) as well as all our local public holidays and CNY for one week. Students in China actually get almost a MONTH off for CNY. It’s crazy. My cousins are so lucky :(

So, I’m considering myself the resident China expert here. I’ve lived on the doorstep of China my whole life, I was raised with both Cantonese and Mandarin, as well as English, and I AM AWESOME. So there. :D

I think Mandarin would be pretty hard to learn from a foreigner’s point of view: it’s not like it has the same alphabet or anything like French, for example, and you have to learn a different character for each word/phrase (over 2000 characters, so..eek!) Also, there is virtually no correlation between the way the character is written and how it is spoken.

48~ Oh my sister, I love you dearly. “Comfortable” is a feeling, not a look. Some things can “look” comfortable, such as a tank top and sweatpants, but, in reality, not be comfortable for some reason (like it might be snowing. In that case you wouldn’t be wearing sufficient clothing, and would therefore be uncomfortably cold). But other things, such as 18th century supportive undergarments, can appear to the uneducated eye to be uncomfortable, but are, in fact, quite lovely to wear.
Also, though some people tend to assume that comfort and looking good are mutually exclusive, I do not believe this to be the case. For example, the right shirt with the right sweater with the right jeans and shoes can look put-together and nice, while still offering the wearer bodily comfort.
So in conclusion, wear whatever you want, just so long as it does not prevent you from moving, make you itch, keep you from breathing normally, maintains a decent body temperature, etc. etc. and you’ll be perfectly fine, I’m sure.

Two days ago, I had the best day EVER. That’s right.
    EVER.
I really don’t think days get much better.
First period- Band- Having band first period is just great in itself. I tried out for wind ensemble, the honors band in our school, and it’s kind of a big deal. Last year, they had a concert at Carnegie Hall. The Carnegie Hall.
    Cool.
Anyway, I tried out two weeks ago, just to try out; I knew for a fact that I was not going to get in. I really thought I was nowhere near good enough
Apparently, I was wrong. I watched as my friend got her acceptance letter, and I congratulated her, but imagine my surprise when the band teacher came over and said “Congratulations!” as he handed me a letter! I could have DIED of excitement!!! It was not just amazing that I was good enough to get in, I was good enough to get in to one of the three open slots, which meant I beat upper-classmen!
Period two- Global- We did nothing, like usual. But I chatted with my friends!
Period three- keyboarding- Finished typing early, and read!
Period four-English- Discussed Anthem (I love that book…)
Period five- Math- I got a 95 on my midterm! WOW, because I’m horrible at math! Average is still a 92, but WOW!
Period six- lunch- Read some more of Looking for Alaska
Period seven- Spanish- Had a revelation that I’m too good at Spanish when I finished the vocab in 10 minutes when it took the rest of the class 40 minutes. Also, I got a 97 on the midterm! I’m going to talk to my guidance counselor about skipping a grade next year. Which is AWESOME.
Period eight- Bio- Bio is just always awesome, but what made it extra awesome is that I got a 98 on the midterm!
After school was great too, I just chilled all night. No homework! But then I started wondering if I was good enough for wind ensemble, so yesterday I talked to the band teacher. She said that she stands by her decision and she definitely good enough. Which was great. She let me just watch them play during a free period, and I really think I can do it.
I’M SO EXCITED FOR NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!

So right now it’s the Year of the Ox… Okay, my brain’s working now. I just turned twelve, and I was born in the Year of the Ox. I feel a bit stupid, though that’s probably because of my long annoying, bad, frustrating school day:

Social Studies was the worst part of my day. We had a sub for this class, and she completely mispronounced my name. In fact, she said an entirely different name! I tell her how to say it, but apparently she didn’t hear it right, because she walks over to me while we’re watching a video and says, “SilverLeopard *says it wrong*, stop passing notes.” I wasn’t passing any notes, though, the kids around my were the ones doing it. Sometimes, whether it’s me or another kid, a teacher blaming someone for something they didn’t do makes me so mad.

That, in addition to 3 different tests (reading, algebra, science) was what made my day so bad.

It’s starting to really get on my nerves when people say my name wrong. I have 4 or 5 nicknames, and 10 or 11 different ways my name is (mis)pronounced.

Sometimes, I feel so sick of my life that I wish I could wake up the next morning with all my problems solved, or as an entirely different person.

I did finally find a piece by the way; my prose was an exerpt from The Tale of Despereaux and I did some poems by Olive Senior. They were both generally well-liked, or so I’d enjoy to believe.

I took it at Carnegie Mellon, and the official “board” was sitting at the front of the huge lecture hall, discussing questions they were receiving from all over the continent. It was pretty awesome.

Well, I took it last year, so I was used to the whole atmosphere. Although last year there were 8 of us in a small conference room, and we got pizza afterward, and this time, there were 20 or 30 of us in a medium-sized lecture hall, and we all ran off to class afterward. The questions were easier this year…

I did okay on the numbers one. I just realized that I made a kind of big mistake on it. That one was probably the hardest one, although the train stations were pretty evil. I got the last one, but I did it in the middle.

So this all actually happened day before yesterday, but my drama club is doing Sense and Sensibility, hence my need to read the book before Tuesday, and we had auditions Tuesday. If I’d read the book a week earlier, and had known the characters before I chose, I would have tried out for Marianne, but I didn’t have the opportunity. I don’t know whether I made it or not, but the judges laughed at the end of it, so I’m somewhat hopeful… Oh well. Even if I didn’t make it, being an annoying neighbor would be fun too. Yay! Yay, yay, yay, yay! At long, long, long last, maintenance finally shows up to fix the issues with our dorm room door. Long last, because last semester’s roomie and I submitted the maintenance request back in early September. Yup, that’s right. A good five months ago. Anyway, the door’s got one of those automatic door closer things. This has been oozing sticky liquid, like WD-40 or some such, from the first day I moved in back in August. Our towel racks are on the back of the door. Due to the leakage, one end of the towel racks is sticky, so my towel rack has been unusable, and I’ve ahd my towel over the bar in the closet space, instead. Also, the door’s started to shut increasingly harder on it’s own, so that if you just loet go it slams really loud……

but, hey, they’ve finally decided to fix it. The guy just left to get different parts and different something to clean the door, because the parts were the wrong size that he had, and his cleaning wipes weren’t do a thing to the junk on the door….So, yeah, he said he’ll be back after lunch to finish fixing it. Yay!!!! Finally.

Well, yesterday was fun. My school is pretty large (at least by Australian standards) so we have four new students in Year 9 (and more to come!). So I am no longer the newest addition to my homeroom. L has already found some other friends, but they’re in other houses, and she seems pretty nice. G invited W, the newest additon to her homeroom, to sit with us, and L and W are both in our French class. I wish I had other classes with them so I could get to know them better, but anyway…

We had French last period, and we were having a good time. Then the fire alarm went off, and everyone went insane. It was clearly the lightning that set it off(and by then it was just raining anyway), but we still had to go out to the oval like it was a real drill. After Mrs Joe yelled at us and our teachers marked the roll etc., we ran back into the school buildings. Then we stood outside our classroom with our hands over our ears until Mr R unlocked the door and we could get our books. I know, to a normal person it sounds terrible, but it was really fun!

Oh, my god. Harry Potter Exhibit: basically the singular coolest hour of my life. You first watch a random little kid get sorted by the Hat, which you can hear through surround speakers. Then you walk through a hall of portraits, some of which move, to the main exhibit. It starts with general props relating to the trio, then moves out into the dormitories. Lots of things are set amidst just enough scenery that you actually feel like you’re looking at Hogwarts. There are mandrakes you can pull and quaffles you can throw, and they have bits of the movies playing at different points to give you some context. The detail on the costumes and props is amazing. They age everything so that it looks worn or used, with years of accumulated
wear. After a while, you move towards sections on the professors, with nits of scenery comprising their offices. Lockhart, for example, is displayed with two gorgeous elaborate outfits, an enormous self-portrait of him painting a self-portrait that was in his office in the films, many if his books, the quiz on himself that he gives his classes on their first day, his wand, and some pixies–and that isn’t even all. Umbridge’s section positively bleeds pink, and displays among other things the detention quill and the kitten plates. You then progress to the Quidditch section, which has many of the Quidditch robes and a corner where you can make goals with Quaffles. The trunk with the balls, brooms, memorabilia from the World Cup, and more are also displayed. Buckbeak is out here too–you now feel like you’re in the grounds. You walk through Hagrid’s hut, which has a hatching Norbert on the table, to the Forbidden Forest. There’s a smallish acromantula and lifelike figures of Bane and Ronan (centaurs). This us sort of a portal to the Dark world–after this you walk past WANTED signs for Death Eaters. You see the angel of death statue from the graveyard in the fourth movie, a dementor (which was honestly terrifying), and Death Eater costumes, among other things. It’s enough to spook you, for sure. You then walk past all of Umbrides ridiculous decrees and out into a room that displays the Yule Ball and some Hogsmeade items, which are all beautiful. Then you walk under floating candles and out of the exhibit past more portraits.

It was magical. You Potterphiles would have loved it.

The US is so much bigger than the UK after all…and the schooling system wouldn’t have been founded a thousand yrs ago. It would have been much, much more recent. I see new schoosl springing up across the country as we expanded westward. Maybe these schools wouldn’t even be boarding schools, but day schools. Is it normal to eat 4 slices (half a pizza) of a large stuffed crust pizza from pizza hut? With double pepperoni and extra cheese?

Because I did. And usually do (when I eat pizza hut). Or, anyway, I usually eat at least 3. Never or almost never more than four. But that’s still a lot of pizza…..Yeah, I’m a bit full. Not unpleasantly so right now, though.

In other news: My roommate (who had only been here 3 weeks) moved out today, and I learned that it is possible to rebunk beds without help. Of course, a bedframe (mattress removed) is a bit on the heavy side, and definitely awkward to shove up on top of my bed. And shoving a mattress up onto the top bunk, when it is a good 5 1/2 or so feet off the ground? Rather challening. Mattresses are heavy.

    • Almost all are. Rosanne knows a lot more about biology than I do, but my understanding is that most of the single-celled microorganisms once classified as animals now have their own kingdoms. The only exceptions are a handful of weird tiny fish parasites called Myxozoa, which turn out to have animal-like DNA and are now considered one-celled animals.

For example, animals have eukaryotic cells with nonrigid cell walls, can’t manufacture their own food (except for a few photosynthetic sponges), and can move around freely at least at certain stages of their lives.

I did very well on the MAPPS, which I’d think would show that something in the grading system is going wrong. Diplomacy is a strategic board game created by Allan B. Calhamer in 1954 and released commercially in 1959.[1] Its main distinctions from most board wargames are its negotiation phases (players spend much of their time forming and betraying alliances with other players)[2] and the absence of dice or other game elements that produce random effects. Set in Europe just before the beginning of World War I, Diplomacy is played by two to seven players, each controlling the armed forces of a major European Power. Each player aims to move his or her few starting units—and defeat those of others—to win possession of a majority of strategic cities and provinces marked as “supply centers” on the map; these supply centers allow players who control them to produce more units.

Funnily enough, I honestly never connected fainting to the fact that sometimes I get a weird head rush for no reason and can’t even see my feet. I wonder if the two are connected at all or if my head rushes are just anomalies…

Speaking of fainting, if you hit your head and go unconscious, do things get kind of grayish gradually, or does it all go black at once? Or does it kind of explode in front of your eyes? -has never been knocked unconscious-

The head rushes I get are from standing up to quickly when I’m dehydrated. I suggest that when you get one, sit down, put your head between your knees, and drink water. So no, Alice, I don’t think your head rushes are just anomalies.

I’ve never been knocked unconscious, thank goodness, so I can’t help with that question.

If you look at it in the terms of an HSB slider, if you have a pure red, brightness up all the way, saturation up all the way, and I really don’t feel like looking for the hue number, you can only decrease the saturation a little bit before it becomes pink.
With blue however, you can make it almost totally unsaturated, and it will still be blue. You can make it really dark, you can make it really gray, but it’s still blue. If you make red too dark, it becomes brown.
WOAH mini-rant. That was really long. If you don’t know what an HSB slider is, you can google it. I really should explain…
Just wondering, how did this post come up?

148~ Forgive me, this ended up being a rather lengthy dissertation….if you read the whoe thing, congrats.
I’ve only been unconscious twice without the aid of drugs, and then the one day I had my wisdom teeth taken out I fainted repeatedly while the drugs they used to knock me out wore off.
I can say that the first time I was knocked out was because of impact (I was playing Red Rover) and I don’t remember it being gradual. One moment I was running towards a line of my friends, the next I was on my back on the grass and they were all peering down at me.

The drug-induced fainting, I don’t remember at all, a few times I’d get dizzy before falling, sometimes I wouldn’t. I’d be fine (though weak) and then just fall over and find myself on the floor again.

The other time I fainted was because of dehydration, heat, lack of sleep, overly tight stays, stress, distress at hearing about 18th century techniques of bleeding, whatever. Anyway, I got dizzy, recall tipping over a bit, regaining my footing, and then just falling into a beautiful, silky black unconsciousness. I remember not wanting to come back to consciousness, because as I was falling it felt so good. Of course, then when I was coming back I hurt a bit from falling, and immediately had to worry about whether my petticoats were decent, and the people around me, etc. But even though I don’t really remember it (obviously, I was unconscious) it felt wonderful. Like the best sleep you’ve ever had.

I generally get dizzy when I stand up though, and occasionally it’s so severe I can’t see anything either because things spin and get blurry, or they go black, I’ve only fallen over once that I remember, though I often lose my footing. Especially if I’ve been sleeping and try to stand up immediately.
Mkay, end of a long post.

Sometimes after I play my DS for awhile, then stand up quickly, I get, well, you know how when you close your eyes for a long time, you get all those stars? For me, it’s like it goes over my whole field of vision, and I get really dizzy. I’ve never actually fainted because of that. But when I got my adenoids removed, they put me under anesthesia. It was strange, one minute, I’m breathing something, the next, I wake up, hurting really badly. No need to go further), I cry when I’m sad (duh), when I’m overly stressed and freaking otu about life in general, when I’m homesick (like when I was having to decide if I was potentially willing to skip going home on spring break, I was so very close to sobbing, but was holding it together just barely so I didn’t breakd own on the phone to mom and get her crying, too), I cry when reading a depressing book/watching a depressing TV show (which never used to be the case), and I wake up crying sometimes, after having had dreams where I am fighting with my dad (I hate these realistic sorts of dreams….*sigh*).

So, yeah, crying at almost any instance seems totally normal (if really frustrating), to me–and being 13 is in no way too old to be crying…..Or else I’m one seriously messed up kid, still crying at 19….Which, in my opinion, I’m not unusually messed up, and actually relatively “normal”. I cry about little teensy weensy things that don’t matter at all, but then not as much at larger things. It’s really odd. I’ll still cry at large things, but then I’ll be sobbing about something utterly unimportant. Like today, I was at a violin lesson with a new teacher and I asked him about a somewhat minor detail about how you play a certain piece, which I’ve been wondering about for some weeks, partly because it’s a whole lot more fun played the other way, and partly because it doesn’t make sense with what I know of music. The new teacher confirmed what my old teacher said, and it was all I could do not to burst out in tears in the middle of this class. That is really frustrating. See, my younger sister and my older sister never cried/cry as much as me, so if I do, I’m the one that gets into trouble and then my dad just rolls his eyes and tells me to shut up. I’m very prone to crying, and you’re right, sometimes it’s really hard to control.

I actually get along with my family alright, but I bicker with my sisters a lot (More the younger one, since my older sis is hardly ever home) and my parents…yeah, we disagree. More than we should probably. Mostly on school stuff actually, because they think that if I get a B for example I need to bring it up to an A like right away. I’m not disagreeing with them, because I do want to do well in school, but I’m not about to lock myself up and study for weeks on end just to do so. And my mom is also really strict, which I guess is good in a way but it’s also frustrating how protective she is.

(For example, she still doesn’t let me watch PG-13 movies, and I’m 13, but I watch them anyway. it’s not like I haven’t seen that stuff before – and I see plenty of those movies at my friend’s houses. The only movie she is 100% ok with that is PG-13 is Harry Potter. I’m not even kidding.)

No PG-13 movies except for HP? I’d seen PG-13 probably well before I was 13. I mean, considering that summer when I was 10 (and my sis was 12), my mom, grandma, and the two of us kids went and watched “The Patriot” (with Mel Gibson, Revolutionary War movie), which was rated R…..

And then somewhere around age 13, when mom was in the hospital at Halloween time for a hip replacement, the job of picking out a Halloween movie fell to Dad. The movie he got was so very definitely R-rated, and quite gory (“House on Haunted Hill”, 1999 version, not original). Gory as in people getting stabbed in the jugular by a handful of freshly sharpened number 2 pencils, and some guy’s face being completely missing after something ate it…..They didn’t show the actual eating, just the bloody gaping hole where the face had been. That was a scary movie. I had nightmares for days. Oh, wait, I have nightmares for days after most horror movies…..Nevermind.

Of course when I was really little, I was banned from even watching Beetle Juice cartoons because they had a bit of Beetle Juice hte movie playing once when we were at the local movie rental place, and I had nightmares, so……Yeah. Let’s just say that once I got older, I just didn’t mention the fact that any horro rmovies we watched were giving me nightmares for days, as I didn’t want another ban. Now, though, I freely admit to all of ’em that “such and such” is going to give me nightmares, and then go ahead and watch it anyway…..Fun times. Well, from my obviously biased position, ( :) ) I do agree that they should loosen up, but to be fair, it’s not so much that they’re like “Oh-no-you-can’t-watch-any-PG-13-movies-just-because-we-said-so” but it’s based on content.

For example, my Latin teacher (Who, for the record, basically treats us all like we’re adults – which can be good and bad) showed us this version of the Odyssey which was bordering on definite R rated material, but she justified it because even though it had rape and sex, they weren’t promoting either of those things. My parent’s reasoning is closer to that too – I was just using HP as an example, but in truth, I guess if I came to them with a movie (Which I probably wouldn’t.) they might say it’s ok. So it depends.

But in some cases, (Like with Grease, which I never watched until last year, and my mom still thought that the one little scene with sex was inappropriate for us. ) I do think that they’re sort of ridiculous. Now, I’m not saying that being so overprotective is a good thing or doing what you’re parents did was a good thing, I think it depends and a little bit of both is probably the right answer, although I’m honestly not the one to say.

I’m also the oldest (my older sister is adopted – it’s a long story, but she wasn’t legally my sister until she was 12) so I think that also plays a part in it, since I’m always the first to do everything.

And to be fair, we honestly don’t watch many movies anyway. I mean, I’m always the one of the group who’s never seen the movie, which sucks in some cases, but we did move around in Europe/Canada up until I was about 8, and since I lived in Spain for a good part of that time we never really watched that many movies there. I know it sounds odd, but we just sort of learned to adapt and live without that piece of media. Even now, we still don’t go to the movie theater that often. I know, I know. Now y’all will think I’m crazy and have had a scarred childhood. ;)

So the point? Yes, my parents are strict, but it’s not quite as bad as it might seem. (Although we do still argue/bicker over it.)

That makes more sense, if they’re going more by the content than strictly the PG-13 rating.

As for not watching that many movies, I get you there…..My family and I don’t watch that many, and most of the “popular” movies that people are raving about when they come out, I’ve never seen. And most movies that we do see, aren’t in the theatre, just random movies borrowed from the thrift store where my mom works, or rented at the grocery store.

I mean, I think we only went to two movies at the theatre in 2009–and actually, only one of those was as a family, the other was just me and my sis over Thanksgiving: HBP and 2012. I mean, honestly, the only movies I remember seeing at the theatre in recent years are either HP movies, the Narnia movies Pirates of the Carribean–and, even those, it was only #3 and maybe 2 that we saw in theatres–and the Indiana Jones movie. I’d say on average, we maybe go to a maximum of two movies a year.

But, yeah….My parents were never too overly concerned. I mean, there were probably movies that they deemed inappropriate for us, they just weren’t ever anything I was interested in, so I don’t ever remember the rating/content being an issue as far as what we could or couldn’t watch.

Of course, I’ve always found any movies with sex scenes (especially if any actual nudity is involved), to be really awkward to watch with the parents around……

My cousins parents, though, are more strict with what he can or cannot watch. I remember when we were picking out movies when we were visiting them Thanksgiving 2008, that there were lots of movies that he vetoed because they either had swearing or microscopic amounts of partial nudity. My cousin is 17 or thereabouts, I think. On at least one movie, I remember him calling a friend and asking “Would *name of movie* be something my mom would be okay with?” And I was finding the whole thing highly amusing, because my parents would’ve just been, “Oh, whatever.”

I had no clue he was in it, (of course I didn’t, Torchwood didn’t come out for years more, and I’d never heard of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer–despite the fact that one of my animal alter egos as a kid was a male squirrel named Buffy……) even for a tiny part. He plays a nameless cameraman, so I’m pretty sure his screen time would’ve been virtually nil, but…..Now I have to rewatch that movie, dangit. Which is something I’ve not wanted to do for several reasons: Mainly, it scared the crap out of me when I first watched it, and I know that upon rewatching it will lose its status in my mind as “Holy crap, one of the scariest movies I’ve ever watched.” when I realize it was nowhere near as good as I thought at the time. That, or I”ll get nightmares, but that’s alright. I can always sleep with the light on.

(But that’s normal, for me). I’ll watch it tonight, let you know how much JM is in it, and if it’s worth your watching despite it being a horror movie. He’s probably only in about the first 10 minutes, because if there were any camera men once they got to the “house”, they were all offed pretty darn quick…..I don’t actually remember any camera men being there at that point, but it’s been a long while since I saw the movie……

I used to cry a lot too, especially when I was semi-homeschooled and came to school only twice a year for exams: the other kids made fun of me for my eccentric clothes, general weirdness and because I couldn’t understand them well when they used slang or spoke fast. But I had to keep following them, since I had no timetable and kept getting lost. I had a bright blue hat not unlike SR’s, and one of the favorite games was to wisk it of my head and run away with, handing it to friends later on. I was shy and had no friends, having only been there a few days. I was terrified of the teachers, and forced to cling to any other student for fear of not finding the right classroom. I cried frequently and was teased for it too. I don’t cry in public anymore- the last time was in 7th grade.

    Long post alert!

148 (Alice): I’ve never actually been unconscious, but I have had a few experiences that might be helpful.

Sometimes, when I stand up too quickly, or have righted myself after being upside-down, the edges of my vision go a little fuzzy and I feel dizzy.

The closest I have ever been to fainting (as I have heard it described) occurred after I had been sitting in an awkward position that placed my feet higher than my head.
I stood up suddenly and walked very quickly into the next room to fetch something from the top of a china cabinet. As I approached, I felt a little dizzy. When I was right next to the cabinet, the edges of my vision blurred in the way it usually does for me: the furthest edge gets fuzzy, then the fuzziness spreads towards the center. This time, however, it actually reached the center, so that my entire vision was blurry. As the distortion reached the center, the edges of my vision went black. The blackness spread towards the center so that I could see nothing.
I thought I had gone blind.
Irrationally, I was afraid that I might fall into the china cabinet, so I sat down on the floor. At this point, I felt a little sick, somewhat like Mr. Coontz described. In a few moments, my sight returned in the center of my vision, and my sight spread towards the edges.

This has never happened again, thankfully. It was terrifying.

151 (Midnight Fiddler): “Distress at hearing about 18th century techniques of bleeding,” brings to mind an experience I had at a historical home in my area that does tours and living history and such.

After having been on a tour, we were brought into a room that showcased an early owner’s medical tools. A man posing as said individual told us some fascinating, but unsettling, information.
At some point, I lost sense of what he was saying and found myself unable to focus on anything except the floor. My mum realized I was not okay and pulled me outside. I was fine almost instantly.

Aaah… Aren’t the medical techniques of our fore-bearers charming?

160- I’m nearly at the point where I would be considered hypersensitive. So, yes, I do. It fluctuates for me though.

148- I have been knocked unconcious, though it was only for a few seconds. It was a few months ago when I got that concussion. My head got slammed into the boards or ice during a hockey game. I remember hearing a loud noise (I thought it was the game buzzer, which it couldn’t have been), and getting up off the ice. I thought I’d gotten up right away, but later when I asked my mom I’d actually been lying on the ice for a few seconds. I don’t remember that at all, or hearing the referee’s whistle. It was only a few seconds, but I “lost time” like LBK explained in 154.

Feeling faint: when I stand up too fast I do (though it’s a bit delayed–I’ll stand up, walk into the kitchen and then my vision gets dark at the edges), which is normal. Sometimes I also see spots in front of my eyes–the best I can describe it is as though there were a swarm of tiny glowing gnats zooming around in front of me, accompanied by tension in my eyes and dizziness. I’ve had this in tennis, hockey, and randomly at school/home.

    • Sudo: On most typewriters, there’s a little lever, usually on the lefthand side near the roller, that deactivates the ratchet that makes the roller click. When the roller can turn freely, it’s easy to roll the paper into position. Sometimes the ratchet-release is a button on the end of the roller’s handle — again, usually on the left.

There’s also usually a lever or switch that lowers a plate under the paper path, so that you can straighten the paper once it’s in place. After you’ve done that, you flip the lever/switch back to tighten the paper before you start typing.

One question I haven’t asked yet: is the typewriter electric or manual?

        • I misremembered: it’s on the right. At least it is on my mother’s old Remington Noiseless — on the righthand end of the carriage (the moving part that holds the cylinder) just below and behind the roller handle. It flips up and down in a slot in the housing. Other typewriters might have it in different places, but manufacturers did tend to standardize them to make things more convenient for typists.

I typed during summer vacations and during a semester I took off from college — for the army at the Pentagon, at the Department of the Interior, and at the Defense Communication Agency. My fellow students didn’t need their papers typed; everybody knew how in those days.

Woohoo everyone’s finished talking about this by now but oh well okay so I black out almost every time I get up when I’ve been sitting down for a while. It’s actually kind of fun, but not really helpful when I need to see. It goes away in a few seconds, anyway, so the effect on my life overall is negligibibble. No, I don’t know why I spelled it like that, but try pronouncing it; it’s fun.

Another thing… One day, I was going to lunch and then everything just went fuzzy in the centre of my vision. People who are nearsighted will know which kind of fuzziness I am talking about- me being nearsighted myself, it seemed like someone had cut a hole in my glasses or something. I decided to ignore it but it just kept getting bigger and bigger and less and less defined until I was having a lot of trouble seeing. There were flashes of rainbows all over the place the whole time, too, intensifying as the hole in my vision got worse.

At its peak, it was really impressive- I had a lot of trouble walking because it had taken away all of my depth perception, and I had my own little private light show going on that was actually worryingly really entertaining to watch.

I went to the nurse and she told me to drink some water. Really helpful, that lady. It didn’t matter much, though, because after I finished eating my lunch it gradually began to fade until my vision was back.

Overall… A fun experience. But only because it’s never happened since.

Does anybody else feel like that when they write, they just write what the teacher wants to read, rather than what you actually think? For example, on the MCAS last year, there was an article about yoga. It asked how you could fit yoga into your life. One person wrote, essentially, “yoga can’t fit in to my life, I have lots to do already.” That wasn’t me. My English teacher said it was a bad essay, and was off topic. I thought that it was more likely to be true.

And now for something completely different: I’m listening to 70’s protest songs, by Phil Ochs.

They all look the same, so there’s no one to blame…

Yes. Constantly. My essays would probably be like “This is so not what I would do. Why am I writing this?” I feel like all I write is a lie. Wouldn’t it be funny if our English/Reading/History/whatever teachers came on and saw this? Hehe…he…um…

      Pie 0

    • Perhaps in this particular case the person didn’t back up ens statement sufficiently. But on the whole, I’d say much depends on the teacher. I had a brilliant English teacher in high school for whom I wrote all sorts of offbeat, quirky, and occasionally cantankerous essays. Not only did she encourage me, she nominated me for an award (which I won). (Robert had classes with her, too, so he can attest that my high opinion of Mrs. Cox is not purely bias.) The next English teacher I had downgraded me for all the same things.

      Pie 0

      • I always found that if I thought hard about an essay and wrote it well, I’d get a good grade no matter what I said. “Why am I writing this?” is not an option, of course; you do have to stay on topic. But within that constraint, there’s plenty of room for creativity. I was never very good at saying things I didn’t believe (except for effect).

In the case of the yoga essay, for example, you could start by saying that you’re much too busy to fit it into your life. Then you could add: “But with a little ingenuity, anyone can work yoga into his or her daily routine” and go on to make some increasingly ridiculous suggestions: brush your teeth while standing on one leg, ride the schoolbus in the lotus position, learn to write upside down so you can practice headstands in class. I know Mrs. Cox would have liked that. (Rebecca is right: she really was a great teacher.)

So, organic chemistry lab was interesting today.

We were performing extractions of organic materials from solutions. Basically, we were mixing a powder which contained three chemicals that don’t really mean anything to me other than that they’re listed as “toxic”, “contact hazard”, and “poison”. (biphenyl, benzoic acid, p-nitroaniline) So we take these and dissolve in an organic liquid (methylene chloride, which is listed as carcinogenic and toxic). And then we put this in a separatory funnel and add 15 mL of 3 M hydrochloric acid, put a stopper in and “shake” it back and forth.

So, I don’t know how I managed it, as I was firmly holding the stopper in, but I had it tilted with the stopper down so that I could vent it (open the stopcock at the bottom end and let out any gas), when somehow the stopper came loose or whatever. Out comes the better part of 50 mLs or so of this mixture (you know, this toxic, acid, carcinogenic mixture). All over my (gloved) hand, which immediately caused the glove to go all wrinkly looking (cue me mentally thinking, oh, *bleep*, it’s going to eat through my glove. And I may–okay, did–say a relatively minor cuss word at a louder volume than desired). And it spilt all over my lab partner’s lab notebook (which now has several pages that are a yellowy, toxic, inky mess–he thinks it’s hilarious), and all over the counter, and several drops splattered all over my coat–which I just realized washing really isn’t going to do anything for, as it’s not a water soluble mess.

Yeah, anyway, glove obviously immediately came off and I washed my hands with soap and all that, but as I noticed after lab when I took off my replacement gloves–my hand is most definitely yellow, which means something in the yellow powder (the toxic, contact hazard, poison powder) leaked through my glove when I got that lovely mixture all over everything….How fun.

And then, of course, we had to restart (fortunately we were only maybe 20 or so minutes in)……With my lab partner doing all the mixing in the separatory funnel and me frantically running back and forth between fetching chemicals and taking down observations and cleaning vast amounts of glassware with acetone. I think I inhaled way too much acetone…….Freakin’ bloody smelly stuff.

So, yeah, lab was interesting…..And the yellow refuses to come off my hands.

Oh, and we were the last ones done, too, which meant we were supposed to clean all the community areas, too, like the sinks, but we’d barely started when the TA signed our books and let us go…..And the sad thing? We still got out earlier than last week……Last week we went 20 minutes late, today we still got out on time.

Wow…..Luna is so very, very, very slow. Okay, you know I said I was going to (and did) rewatch “House on Haunted Hill”? So, anyway, there’s a roller coaster featured at the beginning of it, introducing us to one of the major characters in the movie.

As the roller coaster took off, I notice–“hey, the track is green, it’s green, the seats are green, like on the Hulk coaster at Universal’s Islands of Adventure!” Roller coaster ride continues a bit–“hey, no, this is the Hulk, I’m sure of it, I’m sure! It’s right next to water, and….yes! It dipped through that little puddly thing of fog and mist…..”

And then thought process changes: “Wait, but it can’t be the Hulk, because we were at IoA summer I was 10, the movie was made when I was 9, and I saw it at least 3 years later……If the ride had been made then, I would’ve gone on it, there’s no way I would’ve skipped out on an awesome roller coaster ride.”

So now, still pondering how I could have not gone on the Hulk coaster when I was there at age 10, it suddenly (finally) dawns on me……We didn’t got to IoA. We were at bloody Universal Studios, not Islands of Adventure when I was 10. Thus, I was not at the right park to ahve gone on the Hulk ride–thus why I don’t remember any coasters from that trip, and why I wouldn’t’ve recognized the coaster the first time i saw the movie…..yeah, I’m slow. Very, very slow.

And the movie? Not even a tiny smidge as scary as I remember. That is to say, not scary in the slightest–whether that’s because I remembered almost all of the movie in vivid detail–that is, who lived, who didn’t, and most of the startle-type moments, and thus didn’t get startled/scared by those, or if it’s just not a particularly scary movie, i dunno……it is disappointing, though, when a movie that for a good 8 or so years has been held in your mind as utterly terrifying and you subconsciously compare all subsequent horror movies to it, gets rewatched and has no scare to it at all. Drat. I knew I should’ve skipped watching it.

And I need to shut up, and finish the page that’s due for Mythology tomorrow……

204~ Yes, we used to get new threads at 400 posts, and reaching 500 or more was quite an accomplishment. However, with nested comments people tend to make a lot more posts instead of putting a collection of thoughts in a single post, replying to many people at a time.
We also have a ton more people posting than we did before, which means we have more people posting more per person and threads skyrocket immediately, causing difficulty in keeping track of it all, and would probably end up in us having about twice as many random threads a month if the old limits were used.

Today was an insane, crazy day even by my standards: First I has à really weird and scary dream. I rarely have nightmares, but that was one, Anyway, I was late for school. The teacher whom we have first period is really strict, but he didn’t tell me off. Instead, I got to sit back and doze while my classmates read the final act of the play we’re reading aloud. It sounds nicer that way, likeable even. Then we go to the computer room, to try to find a time when the other play (which I didn’t want to see) is playing. But we couldn’t find a good date, so we get to see The Tempest instead *is overjoyed* Then came History, which was really easy so I could just doze away (the teacher didn’t call on me). And I sat next to C. in the back row, just one seat over from N., without getting insulted or beaten to death or something like that. Then double French: the first lesson I sat next to M. and folded a small boat (curious george style) out of her name Sticker. She stuck it on her finger and drew a sailor under it (L. drew his girlfriend on the other Hand). When she waggled her Finger, it looked like he was drunk (we sung “what do you do with a drunken sailor” for the next two breaks). The second french period, I sat next to B. She and M. were really friendly, even though they’re barby/party girls, the exact opposite of my clique. And they came and chose the seat next to me, not the other way around. English- we were reading a book aloud and you were supposed to call on people a Paragraph or so. The fun was that you could stop in mid-sentence and insert the persons name. I did a good one and everyone (EVERYONE!) laughed. The second good thing that happened was that I now know what I’m wearing to School on Mardi Gras: normal clothes, except my hair will be blue! *excitement* Geography was neat too: we were in the Computer room, and it wasn’t hard. Except that embarassing moment when my Computer started playing the European anthem and I couldn’t shut it off because IE froze up… then again, it was very funny  Then I went Home, had nutella with bread and watched a cheerleader mvie online. I have no idea what posessed me, but the routeines were kinda cool. Then, OMG, what will I wear too Mardi Grass Week at dance class? I pulled off a cool gypsy costume. I worried a bit since my Friends didn’t dress up, but then I saw a guy wearing a Hagrid costume. I wanted to dance with him, but another guy asked me first. Turns out he’s half American as well, and has a big crush on me. I don’t like him like that, but I’d like to be friends. Oh, and he’s 17. One seven. And has a crush on ME of all People. *feels awesome*

So… Congrats if you bore through all that. Today was so Crazy, it could have been one of my Dreams.

Sheesh, weird things are popping up all over the place: All of a sudden SWAT and I are long lost twins, Spelluna has come into existence, and now Enc and Sudo are one?

I just noticed that Kokopelli was in the picture up top. After staring at it hard for ten minutes. looking to see where the Muses were, I finally found him on the scroll.

Today, my good friend Casey came over and we and my sister made:

    – Brownie-fudge cake (a layer of brownies with a layer of fudge over it) frosted with chocolate buttercream frosting (which we also made)
    – Chocolate-filled strawberries (I came up with the idea in study hall last week–cut out the not-so-tasty whitish center and fill it with chocolate instead of just dipping strawberries) dusted with powdered sugar
    – Chocolate-coated banana thirds, one with chopped nuts on top
    – Marshmallows dipped into chocolate and then in powdered sugar
    – Graham crackers frosted with melted chocolate, and then when it hardened with a layer of marshmallow fluff

204- The original reason for limiting it to 3 threads a month was people were spamming in order to try to get as many threads a month as possible. While this wasn’t as much of a problem when the blog was smaller with fewer people, when it grew it became a nuisance rather than amusing.

I’m probably going to see Percy Jackson this weekend! Yayfulness! :)
However, my mom said probably not til Sunday, because I’m sick and she’s right, I wouldn’t want to be coughing through the whole movie. However, I feel a lot better since I had the nebulizer (sp?) at the doctors office, so maybe I could go earlier…

*yells at computer for not showing new gravatars* So, yesterday was… weird. I was mad at whoever decided we’d miss a good subject(math) instead of English or religion to go to mass. On Thursday, one of the four-letter-word-heads in my homeroom said I had a spider on my collar. So they all started screaming until a teacher appeared, found the spider, and brushed it off. Well, guess what happened while we were lining up to go into mass. One of them claimed I had a red mark on my forehead. They think I look like Harry Potter just because I wear classes. You can imagine what happened next. On my way to health class, I tried to think of how many people in my homeroom I don’t hate. Maybe 11? Then how many I actually like. Um… 3? This is why I was thinking of changing houses last year. So I was really upset about it all by recess. It was J’s friend’s birthday today, and she’d brought cupcakes to school and gave us all one. That made me feel so much better. Then I had science, which was okay, and in French I could sit in a group of 5, with G, E, W, and L. *happiness* Media was fun too, and I almost started drooling when Mrs W told us we’d be touching up photos in Photoshop. *more happiness*

Then one of those cakeheads from my homeroom said at the bus stop her teachers never gave out homework. What? I’ve been spending the past two weeks doing piles of stupid English/religion/economics/maths/other homework and she’s a lazy slob and gets to spend her evenings doing… actually I don’t want to know what she does at home. Anyway, the afternoon went downhill from there. *explodes homeroom* And now I have lots of economics homework to do.
