It’s International Brain Awareness Week! How shall we celebrate?

This press release arrived this morning in Robert’s e-mail. Bet you wondered where all those “official” theme weeks and months came from. Thought-provoking, isn’t it?

Greetings-
International Brain Awareness Week® is this week, March 12-18. Coordinated by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, it will be celebrated with public events in more than 69 countries.

Brain Awareness Week may be a useful framework for your upcoming stories on brain-related subjects – such as body clocks, hormones, infant development, memory, and more. It may also be an opportunity to profile neuroscientists who are science communicators. Members of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives are just that; the Dana Alliance is a nonprofit organization of 260 leading neuroscientists committed to advancing public awareness of the brain. We would be happy to connect you with local experts.
…
*Brain Awareness Week® is a federally registered mark of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives. The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives is a nonprofit organization of 260 leading neuroscientists, including ten Nobel laureates, committed to advancing public awareness about the progress and benefits of brain research. It is supported by the Dana Foundation, a private philanthropic organization with particular interests in neuroscience, immunology, and arts education.

  2. “First post”? “Second post”? So far, not much brain awareness on this thread, I’d say.

  3. 3- wait, did you edit that comment? Because I could have sworn that it said something different half an hour ago..

Yeah, I have a brain. I don’t really do that much for it.. It’s kind of been irritating me lately, actually, by its inability to concentrate on anything for more than 30 seconds.. I never used to get bored..

  4. I do sometimes change a just-posted comment if I think of a better way of saying it. Once it becomes part of the “dialogue,” though, I leave it alone.

Brains are like a lot of other things: you don’t notice them when they’re working properly.

  5. 3- HEY! I’m aware of my brain…. which there’s not much of.

  6. I am very aware of my brain. So are my teachers. I think most of them are really annoyed by it though, cause they have to keep thinking up extra work for me to do. However, my brain is useful – when I want to sleep through a lesson, I just do and then catch up later. Yup, I’m lazy. I know.

  7. Ooooooooo! I forgot to say – 8th post! Also, does anyone here live in tornado alley? Cause we are studying tornadoes and hurricanes at school, and since we don’t get many over in England, I just want to know!

I hope this doesn’t come to the same bad things as brain injury awareness month did…my grandpa died of a brain injury!

  11. So, how should we celebrate International Brain Awareness Week? Not by eating brains, I hope. I tried them once and didn’t like them.

  12. My brain needs to be aware of undone social studies homework. I had questions for the entire chapter for science. Easy but I kept getting distracted. I’m not supposed to be on the internet right now.

  15. I think mine went off-duty Friday night. First MathCounts, and I’m neglecting homework for the nth time to museblog now.

Maybe we should celebrate by wishing a normal person “Happy Brain Awareness Week!” Find someone random in a hallway, or a non-Muser friend. Someone you think will have an interesting reaction. And then blog about the results.

  16. When we’re not sure how to celebrate something, we usually put it in a pie. This time, though, that strategy could get a little messy.

  21. Sorry, the only ones you got right were 2, 5, and 6. Please clarify for 3. Did you mean the first example, second example, or third example? :?

    Pie 0

  22. oh, and I think you got 4 right too. As for the answer I had, the reason being was the head is located high up and the senses all need to be there for various reasons. The eyes need to be up high, since you wouldn’t be able to see much if they were on your shins. The ears can hear better if they’re up high, and it’s the best spot on the body to measure balance. The nose needs to be high so it can sniff things, and so that it is close to the mouth and can drain air down to it. As for the mouth, it needs to be high so that there will be more room for other organs elsewhere, and that it’s in a convinient place for our hands to stuff food down it. And touch needs to be on practically every surface, so there’s no real logic there.

  30. Smart people’s brains are wrinkled. Dumb people’s brains are smooth. The reason being is that when your brain stores information, the memory lobes swell, making the brain wrinkley.

  36. 42 – to unthaw something means to freeze it again.

If “thaw” means to get it unfrozen, “unthaw” must mean to undo the process…

Just wondering: can’t you write whatever garble you want on a Wikepedia entry?

  38. 13- Um, I’m sort of English. I’m techincally american, having spent the first 2 years of my life there, but I am living in England now and have been for the past 4 years. I will try to explain the school system, as long as the GAPAs don’t cut it out. (Please don’t! This is very educational, which makes it good for brains)
Basically, you start when you are five with a class called reception. After that, you just progress up in years, starting with year one. (Age wise, the number of the year you are in is about equal to one above the American grade. For example, Year seven, which I am in, is equal age wise to Grade six. However, the subject matter and level of difficulty is about one year higher than in America, so ability wise Year seven is equal to Grade seven.) You spend up to year six and reception in Primary school, like grade school, and then move up to Secondary, like high school, in year seven. We don’t have a school in the middle if you are in public school. When you are in year eleven, you take GCSE’s, which you spend year 10 and 11 studying for. After year 11, you don’t have to go to school any more, but about half of the pupils do. Your GCSE’s influence what you can take. The half that leave go and do apprenticeships or something, and the other half go into Sixth form, either at a special center for them only, or at the Sixth form part of their Secondary school. There you spend about two years preparing to take A levels, which determine which form of higher education you can get into. After A levels, you either go straight into work, get an apprenticeship, or go to university. So, unlike the students in America, you have to know generally what you want to do when you are older by the age of 14, when you pick your GCSE subjects. Isn’t that nice?
I hope that wasn’t too complicated, and that I didn’t go and blabber about things that you didn’t want to know.

28- cool! I don’t really mind, but for example, how about the safety measures that you have to take. I would like to take this opportunity to ask the GAPA’s for a thread on tornado alley. PLEASEEEEEEEEE!

  40. Here we have:
3 years of preschool, from ages 2 to 5
5 years of elementary school, with the same class for 5 years! Agh.
4 years of middle school, again with the same class for 4 years
Then comes the seperation. The better students go to Liceo, the slightly lower, but still high students go to the Commercio, a school for commerce and business, and then there are various other specialized schools for various jobs. There is also the possibility of taking an apprenticeship and learning a trade while working and earning something. I’m in Liceo.
There are 4 years of Liceo. In the first year everyone does the same subjects, including Biology, Chemistry and Physics, for two hours a week per subject. In the second year, students choose a direction: either Linguistico, Scientifico or Economico. The Linguistico focuses on languages and literature, and you have to take latin and greek as long as a bunch of other languages. But you stll have to do the scientific classes, just not as much as the Scientifico, which puts emphasis on Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry. The Economico focuses on Economy, Law, financial mathematics, and then the human sciences, like psychology, philosophy, sociology, etc.
    I’ll probably go economico.

  42. We have what they call “academies” at my school. Kids who want to specialize can go into either the academy of Math, Technology, and Science , Humanities(languages and history), or the Arts academy. I’m in MTS. You have to go to lectures during lunch and some after school classes, in addition to an internship, research project, summer session, etc. You don’t have to join an academy, though people who already know what they want to do usually join because it’s almost impossible to join after freshman year, and it looks good on a college application. I think about 99% of students go to college, luckily UMD is one of the best state schools in the country. Go Terps! (don’t laugh, yes, our motto is “fear the turtle!” )
