Kmt Pwns!*

This month’s Random thread travels to the ancient land of Kemet, kingdom of the Pharaohs, a country you more likely know as Egypt. Perhaps someone would care to try ens hand at translating the story at the top of the papyrus?

Kai – it was amazing. He talked about what sort of training he did before becoming an astronaut, including his previous jobs (Navy SEAL), and then showed us a video that described the Endeavour STS-127 trip from beginning to end, including a tour of the ISS and its different modules belonging to different countries (US, Canada, Russia, Japan, Europe). He also discussed what life was like living on the ISS (they stayed there approximately two weeks), including sleeping, eating, going to the bathroom, etc. and what sort of things they did up there, such as sending out a satellite for someone (I forget who), replacing the ISS battery, etc. It was so cool! At the end there was time for questions and I asked him what his first impression was when he saw Earth from space for the first time, and he said it seemed pretty silly, but he was the one in charge of taking the video of the rockets falling back to Earth, so as soon as he saw Earth out of the window his first thought was that he needed to start filming! That was pretty funny. Overall it was so inspiring! I still can’t believe it! *is an astronomy freak*

The girl who does my hair was like “YAY! You’re doing something different!” because every time I ask for just a trim she kind of sighs and asks if I’m sure I don’t want to try something new?
So it’s similar, but shorter in back and not as heavy around my ears. My head feels all light.
Mom got her hair cut too, so she went from mid-back length to chin length. Straight with no layers, of course. Oh, Dad’ll have a shock when he gets home….. xD

Well, first day of dance intensive was better than anticipated. First class of the day: Ballet. The teacher is awesome. One, she was wearing a Viva La Vida t-shirt. Two, she’s amazing at explaining things. Three, she was wearing a Viva La Vida t-shirt. Four, she’s really nice. Five, she was wearing a Viva La Vida t-shirt.
Second class: Pointe. Same teacher. Tiff (the only other girl from my class, also one of the two girls in said class that will actually talk to me) and I were the only girls not on pointe, and felt rather dumb. Tomorrow, second class will be Variations instead of Pointe.
Then lunch break, for thirty minutes.
    Third class: Modern Dance.
Teacher is very nice. Dancing style is fun. I like Modern.
Fourth class: Dancing for Musical Theatre.
VERY FUN. My sister laughed at me when I was practicing the steps we learned, though. But I like it. (And feel guilty because Tiff doesn’t.)
    Fifth class: Physical Therapy.
We’re learning about dancing injuries, etc. I’m apparently “extremely hyper-mobile”, which is pretty cool. (hyper-mobile=double jointed)

And then there were all the funny things that happened. Abby wrote “Kimbo” on Kim’s name tag, and my name tag fell off and got stuck on my foot during a combination. After my name tag fell off ten times, it disappeared. (Yes, I counted.) Kim traced the ring of someone’s phone to my backpack, when I knew that my phone was off and the only ringtones I had were dorky classical music ringtones, thus it could not have been me. Then of course everyone laughed at my ancient mobile, which is over ten years old, and I felt stupid.
    Over all, a fun day.

12- And now this page is forever doomed to have a little scrolly thingy on the bottom. :D YAYAYAY no school! I congragulate you!

The final orchestra concert was tonight. This was the last time the orchestra as I knew it played together. More than half of us are seniors, and I actually like them, unlike last year’s seniors. The four seniors in the cello section that are leaving are ones I’ve played with since I joined the orchestra two and a half years ago as a freshman. They were always there, every day, to play and laugh and joke. Now I’ll never play with them again. And in about a week I will never see them again.

This year was one heck of an amazing year, from an orchestra standpoint. I don’t believe I ever informed you all of our state standings? First and symphony, by 36 points (The largest margin in the history of the competition), and second in strings by one point. But the one point was from sightreading; we won onstage. So this year was basically a sweep. It was so amazing.

I think the best part was by the time district competition rolled around, I was certain that we weren’t ready. Our biggest competitor (the one who went on to win) was filled with genius players. We only had two, maybe three who were outstanding. But we sounded better. We were together, we moved, we had heart, and we were all friends with each other. That friendliness was like nothing I had ever seen before in orchestra. Usually there were at least two seniors who were crabby about everything. But this year we all loved each other and our teacher. That’s why we did so well. And that’s why this year was the best year of my life.

I’ll miss my senior friends. I hope they remember me, because I sure will remember them.

I must remember to get all of their signatures in my yearbook.

i’m inclined to be critical of anything israel does, especially since there are so many (at least among people i know) in the US who labor under the unfortunate delusion that israel can do no wrong. both sides commit atrocities in any war, and the flotilla thing to me looks like a big misunderstanding on both sides. i don’t doubt that the activists opposed the israeli soldiers, but i highly doubt they were as heavily armed as the israelis are saying. but obviously all we can get is secondhand information, so it’s hard to tell whether it was justified. still, i’m kind of leaning towards not acceptable here.

  28. I’ve seen some spellers downtown. (Note to newcomers: the National Spelling Bee is taking place this week a block from my office.) They’re easy to spot: Two adults come walking along, one staring at a map and tripping over cracks in the sidewalk, while a 13- or 14-year-old brings up the rear. The kids tend to look sun-deprived, and some of them carry dictionaries.

The spellers are taking their computerized tests today. The highest scorers will be taking to the stage for direct competition tomorrow. I don’t think any MBers are in the bee this year, but I wish them all good luck and many pies and will be checking the results every now and then. Maybe speller73 would like to add some commentary?

    Pie 0

Bee week! *gets all nostalgic* Wait, kids are actually carrying dictionaries? I never even brought mine to the bee (nor did most of the people I know). Actually, I never really used my paper dictionary (either of them), since Scripps also sends you a nice, searchable, electronic one, which is much more useful.

I won’t have any Internet starting tomorrow evening (I’m going to a math competition), but I’ll be following the bee until then. Can’t say I know enough to make any predictions about who will do well (and most of my predictions for last year, when I knew half the finalists, were wrong), but I’ll gladly add commentary throughout tomorrow.

Also, a slight correction. Everyone will spell for 2 rounds on stage tomorrow. Based on a combination of that and their written scores (I can explain the scoring system in more detail if anyone would like), the top 50 or so (I think 50 is the maximum) will make the semifinals on Friday.

Read the entire Discworld series. Not necessarily in order. In fact I am reading them with a complete disregard for chronology, since to this point my approach has been “Why spend too much time and money on the first book when I can get the sixteenth from my school library tomorrow?” Course now the school library is closed, but I’d nearly exhausted their supply anyway, so I have to turn elsewhere. I bought Feet of Clay and Hogfather today with my Shiny Bookstore Gift Certificate, and the library has Equal Rites and Going Postal though they aren’t currently “available.” So I think I’m well on my way to Complete Terry Pratchett Fanaticism, yay!

    • POSOC says:

      Hm.
I advise that you start with Hogfather. I know you’ve read Thief of Time, so that ought to start you out with a character you’re familiar with (Susan). It’s also got one of the best villains ever (“We took pity on him because he’d lost both parents at an early age. I think, on reflection, we should have wondered a bit more about that”).
Equal Rites you could pretty much read at any point- it’s not terribly relevant to the rest of the series. It does introduce Granny Weatherwax, but really she’s much better characterized in Wyrd Sisters and the books following.
Feet of Clay should definitely be read before Going Postal. It’s one of the best Watch books, so it serves as an introduction to Ankh-Morpork before Going Postal begins overhauling it, and as a bonus, it introduces golems, which play a major part in Going Postal.

I mean, I’ve read at least two of the Night Watch books but that was years ago and I don’t remember them at ALL. I have a vague memory of…well, pretty much nothing. Except possibly something resembling crumpets. Well yes.
I am currently reading Feet of Clay, mostly because I ♥ Death and so I’m saving that for last, well, not last but later. Also I just read a Death book (Mort) and I want to break it up a bit. So yayyy but I think I have to stop and read The Shadow of the Wind which is all *intense* because I need to give it back to Mrs. P by the end of the year. I am extremely tired of having to use Mom’s computer, which is in the middle of everything and has no privacy. I. Don’t. Like. Being. Watched.
And my brother won’t leave me alone.
And my computer probably isn’t fixable, without spending lots of money on a possibly temporary solution. My dad and I have been slowly eliminating all possible problems with it that are really fixable.
And I’m wondering whether it’s really a good idea to be spending so much time on MuseBlog. I’ve already decided that video games aren’t going to do anything for me in the long run and I’m in the process of attempting to give them up. It’s hard, but I’m making progress.
I’ve rationalized MuseBlog with explaining to myself that it’s teaching me to be more accepting, it’s good for my writing, I’m forming relationships.
But I’m not sure. All the RPGs and writing threads are dead. What do friendships really mean when you’re unlikely to ever see the person’s face? And you can’t deny that MB is teaching me acceptance, but is it enough to keep me on here all the time?

And now that’s summer’s approaching, I’m sure I’ll only be spending more time on it than less. The only difference is that I’ve been trying to figure out what it’s like to lurk more, post less…and for me, that’s very hard, seeing as I’m the type of person who always seems to need to give an opinion. (Funnily enough, that is how I am in real life as well.)

But if you think that the things you once loved about MB – say, the RPGs in your case – aren’t as great as they once were, or that you simply want to take a break from it, than it should be your choice. Then, someone began spying on their worship rituals. The bird picked up a donut. The three people began clapping to the donuts, while someone still kept spying. Two of the three people then stopped worshipping to eat bowls of banana slices. Then, the person who hadn’t eaten yet had a bowl of steak. Then a feather was involved in something.

Dissecting sharks…in sixth grade we dissected squid. I was too squeamish to actually do it so I took notes. I actually did do it, brought home the squid in a little plastic bag, and they sat in our freezer for months.

Nym and I were just discussing this, and she said she was surprised I actually brought them home. Thinking about it, I’m surprised my teachers gave it to me.

So yesterday was Year 9 day. Until last year, they had a camp, then a day out, and now this year we sat around in the school hall and got lectured about self esteem, friendships, person safety, body image, etc. by Danielle Miller(aka MrsJoeLover). Mrs Joe spent weeks telling us how wonderful it would be, so all anyone was looking foward to were the no uniform and missing class bit. (Not that I got to miss Commerce or English or anything.)

The whole thing was actually pretty fun. We got to sit on the floor with our friends, so that was good, and ilovehpb and some of her idiot friends sat in front of us and made the day interesting. As part of the friendships thing, we wrote notes to our friends on the booklet thing she handed out about what we like about them, and that gave us all a nice warmfuzzy.

And the non-uniform thing– most of my friends don’t dress that differently from the populars, at least on days it’s so cold said populars don’t want to freeze their legs off in short shorts and the lowest-cut singlet tops they can find. But the free uniform extends to allowing make-up. The idiots in my homeroom pile it on enough when they know they’ll probably be caught, you can imagine how gross they looked yesterday. And to offset that, some of our displays of nerdiness:

When our speaker was asking who’d felt they had to be like someone we knew because they were pretty, I realised the last time I wanted to be like someone was because they were smarter than me.
–At the end of the day, G, E, and I were the last girls to leave the hall (happens all the time in French class) and the photographer photographed us in front of one of the good house’s butterfly banner things(the presentation was called the Butterfly Effect). G and E are actually in that house, I’m not.
–Every time we were asked if we’d seen (insert popular movie here), it was my group who DIDN’T put their hands up.
–MrsJoeLover told us her Year 9 maths classroom had a good view of the nearby boys’ school. You can guess how she spent her lessons. It took that comment for me to realise I can probably see the (our nearby boys’ school) oval from my classroom, yet I spend every lesson doing maths. (I know, I was allocated a seat away from the window, but that’s not the point.)

And you want to know why I say MrsJoeLover that? She went on about how she could tell Mrs Joe really cared about Year 9 and was a great teacher, blah blah blah. If we liked Mrs Joe, would I have named her after  ?

My doctor has asked me for the past 5 years “any interest in boys” and for 5 years I’ve answered “nope” and she tells me to just wait, that’s perfectly normal. And I’m thinking “if you asked me “any interest in girls?” I would have answered yes two years ago” So I decided to just keep answering “no” until she asks me if I like girls. Cause come on, that’s perfectly normal too.

On another note, I’m leaving in about an hour for a road trip with my entire grade. Fun stuff. No computer access though.

HI. I actually felt like posting on the main blog today.
I’m kind of dizzy and drowsy because I’m taking some antibiotics that have ridiculous side affects. Which has kind of ruined my day. The world only stops spinning when I sit very still, but I’ve dropped my dosage from 3 a day to 1 a day so I should be fine tomorrow, plus it’s new and I just started yesterday so it needs some adjusting to. Don’t worry about me, though. It’s not for anything particularly serious. And I read the pamphlet about it cover to cover.
School is winding down. My last day is the 18th? Somewhere around there? I have one exam durring the exam period, which is physics. I’m a little worried because I have no idea what we’re doing in class right now, but I’ll sort it out eventually.
This past week I had nine improv shows. So much fun. I was only doing lights for one, but that was still cool. It’s sad now, though, because I won’t be doing improv until september. My evenings will be so empty.
As some of you may remember, I like to write and draw comics. Well, exciting news on that front. I’ve made a bunch of comics that I am going to sell at an upcomig small press fair where I live. My friend fially convinced me to join a creative writing club at my school, and I’ve been pretty heavily involved. We’ve got a full table at the fair and we have so many zines to sell. It’s going to be fantastic.
Life in general is going pretty well. It’s summer. And although I hate the heat, I realized this year that winter puts me in a really unhealthy state of mind. I wind up being pretty miserable from november through to march. With the good weather has come a really positive, good attitude from me, for which I am very greatful.
Brownie points to whom ever read all of this.
    Hope you’re well, GAPAs. :)

GAH SO MANY POSTS. What happened to the lull that was a few days ago so annoying to me? *drowns in posts*

Anyway, yesterday went well, we didn’t have a lot of kids, but a handful and none of them were monsters, which was good. It sprinkled on and off, but nothing serious.
Then when I got home I washed up, changed, and went contra dancing with our friend Elena from the choir Mom and I sing in. It was great fun, but sad because I’m not going to see her again, at least for a long time, because she’s moving to Argentina.
It was great dancing though, and we ran into Courtney, another soprano in the choir, and her husband. They’re the most adorable couple. :3
The band was pretty good, the caller was clear, and I danced most of the evening. And during the break there were homemade chocolate truffles, that were SO GOOD.
I had some very good partners, and some very good-looking ones (and even good-looking ones who were good dancers *swoons*). :D
It was interesting, at one point I went to the bathroom (I drank copious amounts of water) and barely recognized myself in the mirror. I was wearing a blue tank top and one of my favorite orange printed skirts, no necklace, and dangly bell (twist on, I still haven’t pierced my ears) earrings. With my new haircut and all that I looked old. Or maybe I looked my age, I don’t know. I’m used to looking like a little kid, so it was a bit of a shock. Huh. Anyway, it was interesting.
We left the dance at the end and then visited at Elena’s house for a little bit and I drove home and had the roads all to myself (it was, of course, the middle of the night by that point) and the lightning bugs out on our road were unbelievable, and I saw two adorable foxes in my driveway! *melts*

Today I played more children’s games, though we only had two kids come by. It was raining and there was a severe weather warning and a tornado watch and no visitors, so we packed up and left early. But it was alright.
Gareth came, and it was fun to visit with him again for a little bit. Then we took a tour of the house, which was interesting. The house itself was very nice, but some of the things the lady giving the tour said were kind of weird. I won’t even get started with the costumes the staff were wearing, which were frightening at best.

Now, I really need to start packing. I have four days, but I need to start getting stuff ready. Blahh, I hate packing.

Uggghhhhhhh packing. I’ve made a totally messy (and huge) pile of clothing that I want to bring with me, but of course there’s NO WAY all of it’s coming, so I need to sort out even further, and then try and stuff it in my bags, and then most likely thin it out even more and…..bleh. I dislike packing. Then I need to freak out over shoes and accessories and junk like that and toiletries and books and journals and writing materials and electronics and other random things that I want to drag along with me, and figure out how to stow it all so it doesn’t get killed but is still accessible and BAH! But I have a few days, so that’s good. But I need to get shampoo and conditioner and something else that I can’t remember right now. Have I ever mentioned that I have a really horrible memory for things like this? I can’t remember if I have. >.<

Mom's leaving today, she she's running around the house getting ready. I've abandoned my packing until she's gone and I can blast music and spread all over without disturbing anyone.

My leg really hurts. I need to dance more often to get used to it. Owowowowowowowowowwwwww.

109~ No idea. I would guess that if indeed a computer was emitting sparks when it started it would be a problem with the hardware, not the operating system and/or software. However, computers running XP would limit which models might be doing that, would it not?
However, I’ve never heard of such a thing occurring. I used to have a Toshiba computer running Windows XP, and never saw sparks.

I’m still sort of torn whether to go to the michigan game or sell it, because if i upgrade the ticket (which would cost me about $50), last year they were selling as high as $300 so i could make around $220. which like, daaang. at the same time, i feel like going to the game would be an Experience. especially since i’ll be doing the mirror lake jump and everything next year. so hmmm :-/

but i have tickets anyway, which is exciting. and jeremy is making our group so that we can get seats together, our group name is going to be nerdfighters because we told him sarah would appreciate it. andrew wanted raptor jesus but he was outvoted, so we told him that raptor jesus could be our group mascot.

So. Indoor sky-diving yesterday was incredible, amazing, indescribable. First you go through a quick orientation, then you get dressed up in these suits. After waiting for everyone else in your group to go, you step inside the wind-tunnel. It was the weirdest thing I’ve probably ever felt. All the air is gushing at you so fast that it’s hard to breathe at first. But eventually you get the hang of it and you figure out the positioning, and I was able to go pretty high in the air. At the end of the second round, the wind goes up to about 120 mph, the instructor (who was in there the whole time), grabs you and you go up about 20 feet in the air. It was spectacular!

Me with a member of the MIT spacesuit lab:
    [*]

I asked if it would be possible to make space fingerless gloves, with the glove being traditional and the fingers being made of the stretchy Biosuit material that the woman’s suit is made out of. She said that was a great question, but the issue isn’t moving the fingers, but getting the hand to bend at the middle. Oh well. She said it was a good idea, though.

Me reading Muse in front of a model of the James Webb Space Telescope in Battery Park. The real one’s going to go 1.5 million miles from the Earth. If we could sneak a copy onboard, that would set some records, wouldn’t it?
    [*]

    [*]

Astronaut Sandy Magnus signs my Muse:
    [*]

    Sandy’s signature:
    [*]

    Leland Melvin’s signature:
    [*]

I got to talk to semi-famous science journalist Miles O’Brien, who was moderating the astronaut talk. He said he liked my question a lot, and when I asked for his autograph, he gave me a business card, but I explained why Muse was so important, so he took out his pen again, and:
    [*]

“Remember me when you rule the world- Miles O’Brien!”

And I have an awkward amount of pages left in my notebook.* Not enough to start a new one, and a disturbingly thin amount for all summer. But seeing as it's lasted two years already and I haven't been making use of the notebook as much anymore, I guess it'll be okay. It's still kind of disconcerting though. :/
Fortunately however, I finished the last page of my journal (that had also lasted two years) last night, so I can start fresh in the new one. :) Except that it's always slightly intimidating and odd to start afresh without being able to look back on old entries. Oh well, whatever. I'll definitely have enough pages, and that's what matters.
I have one book to read which should keep me plenty occupied, but I'd also like to bring along a novel or two, or something like that. But I'm not currently reading any books (besides Wind in the Willows, but that's not worth bringing for more than the car ride, because I'll have it done by then). *siiiigh* Such a dilemma.
I'd bring along some Muses and Cricada's, but I don't want them to get mauled. And if we were going to be in Erie more it wouldn't be a problem, because Erie Maritime Museum is right next to (actually, in the same building as) the public library, and I have a card from last year. But alas, such is not to be, unless I want to pay overdue fines, which I don't.
So. Books. Writing implements. More books. Gadgets and chargers for them. All packed so I can get to them conveniently (or at least without making a huge production out of it) and so that they won't get smashed into oblivion by the cruel forces of the Inside of a Backpack or Bookbag.

*For those who don't know, I always have at least a notebook and a journal with me. The notebook is kind of the catchall where I jot down lists, doodles, addresses, stick in pictures/flyers/other random places of paper or thin objects, and write stories in. The journal is private, wherein I recount the activities of the day(s) and occasional philosophical ramblings or emotional outbursts about them. Yes, these two closely linked parts must be kept separate. Why? Because.

Hi LBK! *waves* I really hope that all your problems with the annoying boy work out.

      I have two more days!

Toy Story 3 looks awesome! :D I’m really excited. So are many of the rest of the kids in my grade, actually. We were having a big discussion about it the other day, and a bunch of people want to organize a middle school party for our school to see it together. We act like such little kids sometimes, but it’s hilarious. I remember when Toy Story 1/2 were all the rage, back when I truly was little.

I’m sorry that you don’t want to live anymore but don’t want to die. It’s a complicated feeling, isn’t it? I’ve felt the same way before, and I’m afraid there’s not much I can say about it besides just living it out. Oh, and trying to surround yourself as much as possible by things/people/activities that either will take your mind off of it/make you feel happier. I hope things get better for you no matter what you’re struggling with. *choklit*

And as for the part about not wanting to live/not wanting to die, I’d take starr’s advice to just live it out as well as surrounding yourself with people and things that you love. Things will work out and get better eventually, I promise. *more hugs* *choklit*

Afterwards, I got in line to shake hands with the speaker and realized that I was standing next to Sir Edmund Hillary. He was in his late 70s then but was still tall and sturdy. Oddly, I don’t remember whether we were introduced or exchanged any words, but I do remember that he told the speaker that she clearly had a great future ahead of her.

I went to Webb Institute yesterday night! Webb is an elite nautical architecture school (really I should say maritime engineering) on the North Shore of Long Island- just outside of NYC. It’s intense and focussed and awesome and completely free. (I love schools with no tuition! Macaulay and Webb and Cooper Union! Children: investigate.) They had a lecture and then a demonstration of the towing tank. Firstly though, there was talking. I spoke to Mr. S, who runs lots of local events and impressed him with my (Olympic) sailing knowledge! Hopefully he’ll remember me at regattas and things better than last year. Then I saw Fast, a guy I competed against in a big race last year (and lost too, and he was a jerk, but it was all good last night), so he gave me an even more exclusive tour later at the demonstration. Inside the mansion ( they live and learn in a MANSION on the water) there were two talks, one on the nature of towing tanks and fluid dynamic modeling, and another on interceptors and their use on high performance yachts. VERY COOL! Thanks to research I’ve done in and out of school I knew what was going on the whole time! The rest of the audience was mostly graying yachtclubbers, so I asked some insightful questions too! Then the towing tank, which is basically a long narrow pool that you can pull a model boat hull through and test it for resistance, etc. Unfortunately for myself I didn’t have a camera on hand, zut! I’ll discuss it with my physics teacher later next week, it was all very cool. And I learned how a bulbous bow drastically reduces bow slamming! It’s so simple but ingenious. It was a very good night!
And Friday I’m going to Walkabout, an event in NYC in which I’ll be able to see the insides of startups! Silicon Alley here I come!

tl;dr Attend lectures and demonstrations whenever you can. Talk to (older) smarter people. Attend free schools.
You are elite; learn and impress.

Heyy guys! You didn’t get rid of me yet. We have internet here, and I don’t think we actually leave Erie until the 15, when I’ll have the multiple days without internet. SO. I will be here. I am here. MWAHAHAHAHA. But that your for the wonderful goodbyes anyway. :D

So, today I showed up around 0730, had breakfast, muster, etc. and went to sanding, tacking down and painting. Funfunfun. Then I got sent aloft to the crosstrees to…..TAR THE SHROUDS! Wheee! What that means is climging up to the highest platform (which is just an open square, really) with a dish detergent bottle full of and covered with tar (runny stuff, it’s a misture of tar, black paint and linseed oil) and squirting that tar solution over the shrouds and then spreading it around on them with your hands. You can use a rag, but I was wearing rubber gloves, so I just used my hands. Then my gloves tore (they were the thin throwaway ones), and lunch was called so I was in a hurry and just used my hands and used the rag to wrap the gloves in and put in my pocket so the inside wouldn’t get all gross. My clothes were, obviously, plenty smeared with tar though, which looks like heck but smells quite good.
After that I was painting next to Paul (I know him from last year, good guy, amazing musician).
“Oh, something smells good.” *looks over* “Oh, it’s your boobs.”
Because (being a girl) leaning against the shrouds to keep from falling to my death the, erm, parts of me that protrude the most got the most tar.
I also helped with pulling the flying jibboom out to where it’s supposed to be (the uprig you may remember me complaining about last summer, same deal).
After work there was a party at a local amusement park for a girl’s graduation. I don’t know exactly how she’s connected with the ship, but I heard she’ll be sailing with us at some point this summer. I don’t know if she’s sailed with Niagara before though. I’d never met her.
At any rate, we went, and I rode a roller coaster. And didn’t die, which I was glad about. I hope you are too.

And now, here I be. Sitting in the hallway minding my own business and writing a copiously long post.

    • What is MuseBlog? That’s a tough one. Let’s see…

It’s that of which those who know do not speak, and those who speak do not know. It’s a stairway afterthought, a realization in retrospect, something you can’t quite put your finger on, something right on the tip of your tongue. It’s a nap in dappled shadows, a warm fire, a perfect cup of tea. It’s Serenity and serendipity, the fabric of space, the color of magic, the unheard melody, the uncarved block, the Unmoved Mover, the Luminiferous Aether, the Void, the Plenum, the Room of Requirement, the Up and Out, the Q Continuum, the Chronosynclastic Infundibulum, the Total Perspective Vortex. It’s the McGuffin, the Horn of Plenty, the Apples of the Hesperides, the Golden Hind, Schrödinger’s cat, the pantheist’s boots, the Philosopher’s Stone. It’s where the elite meet to eat, where the wild things are, where parallel lines cross, where all stars end. It’s Lyonesse and Innisfree and Caras Galadhon, the coast of Bohemia, the wood beyond the world, the second star to the right and straight on till morning.

It’s all very hard to explain.

oh cooome let’s sing ohio’s praaiise, and songs to alma mater raaaiise

any of you old people remember when i first moved? i was all “what is with these crazy buckeyes they are so insane i don’t understand”

somehow i have become one of them :O

on the plus side, the board games club is still meeting over the summer, and most of the galactic council from the sci-fi club will be staying in columbus, and all my friends from high school are here, and september is going to be a montage of road trips. i know i’m at least hitting up the major cities in ohio, and possibly going to see bill at baking school as well (she’s leaving me for pittsburgh :( )

also i am going for some very cool jobs this summer. the book loft (little 32-room bookstore in german village that i’ve wanted to work at forever) is finally hiring, there’s a job opening at the cartoon library in the wex, and a twitter-friend of my dad’s who does grammar podcasts and stuff is looking for an intern. and i’m applying at the thompson library as well (THE SPACESHIP LIBRARY IT IS SO SHINY) although i have less chance there since i don’t have work-study.

but for now i am going to shower! we waded through the hordes of drunk seniors yesterday to go see the a-team (which was fantastic, by the way) at midnight. i resolved never to do senior crawl, or at least if i did, to leave by midnight. i don’t know why people go out and get trashed, it never looks like they’re having any fun. plus then you fall over and bleed on the floor (this happened) or pass out and get dragged off to the hospital (this also happened). anyway, i was already checked out of my room so i crashed with jeremy and i didn’t know i was going to the movie so i didn’t have any PJs or anything. woo sleeping in clothes :-/

So far my main emotions are a lot of stress and a sense of the complete lack of the freedom I usually feel in summer. And stress. And dread. And stress. And an idea that if only communism worked the way it was supposed to things would be great but it’s not working and things are slipping out of control and I need to get a grip but I still don’t have time. And a mixture of guilt and selfishness and stress.

This was why I was not going to make the theater troupe my senior project–too much stress making it not as fun as it could be. But it’s supposed to be fun and exciting and I thought, hey, it’ll be great. But so far I’m just stressed. I can’t even properly drown my sorrows in Terry Pratchett ’cause that’s just me hiding and it’s not actually solving any problems. Plus it costs way too much.

Last day of school…insane. We went to an assembly, did tons of yearbook signing (Tons, but it was awesome), and had field day. My team didn’t win, but really, who cares? After spazzing out with my friends, (and saying a ton of good byes for the summer) I went to dismissal, and watched all the 8th graders cry while standing in huge groups hugging one another. I have to admit, watching other people cry is one way to make me tear up a little. I probably wouldn’t have become so sad if not for seeing them so upset. And I also know that next year, I’ll probably cry as well, because these people have become such a huge part of me. This year had some suckish moments, (actually, a lot of suckish moments) but it had some amazing moments as well, and it’s the latter I’m going to remember.

Besides, looking back on the whole thing…it got better towards the end. It really did. The beginning was tough, and even now, sometimes it’s still tough. But during the last parts of the year, I think I just relaxed more, and did less worrying about where all my friendships are going and instead decided that if I had fun, everything was going to be ok regardless of whatever gossip or drama or complications were behind it. and besides, I really changed a lot this year (from last year) and I hope for the better. i don’t know. :/

Well, that’s all. Enough of my sappy end of year post. :D SUMMER!

My Junior Year of High School is over!

This means I’m a Senior, which is kind of scary…

147.1- I don’t know, but if they do, I SO want to go on a tour. When I was very young, my father got me a book about libraries all around the world, which I still own, and there was a section on the Explorer’s Club and their library, which sounds incredible. Just the concept of the place sounds awesome.

150- Of course Stark knows Musk in-story. Of course he does. That’s brilliant. Does he just say “Hi” or does he “Hi, Elon” or what?

I’m trying to think if I’ve ever mentioned SpaceX in my Marvel fan-fic. If they haven’t shown up yet, they certainly will in the next story arc, I’m just wondering if they’ve shown up before…

161- Fireflies in the summer are the best. Especially on the night of a meteor shower when you lie on your back and try to figure out if each flash is a meteor or just a firefly. (And now you’ve made me want to get out to Long Island ASAP. Have to wait for tomorrow. Well, actually I was on LI yesterday, but I went home before dark, and Bethpage is so close to the city it doesn’t fully count…)

    Okay, yes, the ISS link-up…

It rocked. Erin and I got to be general helpers and wear the museum volunteer shirts. We counted out goodies for the teachers to give their students before they arrived. (They gave away some crazy swag, including ISS calendars, which Erin and I also got, and paper shuttle models with great retro pen-and-ink drawings, which we didn’t get.)

Then, we had to race around giving all of the teachers their surveys and folders, which were in separate boxes, and there were seperate papers for each school group… it was really complicated. We were running around a lot and muttering the clean version of Shepard’s Prayer (“Please, God, don’t let us screw this up!”) under our breath the whole time. (What would the Muse version of that be?)

After all of the groups were settled, we got to be docents, which we both loved, because we were really enthusaistic and the kids were very excited about space. We acted out a whole Apollo mission with the Saturn V and Command & Service Module models they gave us, complete with sound effects and jazz hands simulating fire and parachutes. It was so much fun.

We didn’t get to talk to Ms. Caldwell-Dyson, but seeing her answer questions from kids in the theater in real time was amazing. She said she’d brought up colored pencils to try and capture the view out the window for when she gets home, which I thought was a great idea.

After much deliberaton, Mr R finally let us watch The Fugitives in French yesterday. They’re not supposed to show us M rated movies before Year 10, but we did it anyway. Compare this to something my English teacher told us about:
My English teacher: AAAAH the Year 9s are coming QUICK turn this M rated movie off.
Year 10 #1: Why the fuss? It’s not like they don’t here about these things.
Year 10 #2: Or do them.
    My English teacher:
And it takes a lot to gross my crazy English teacher out, too.
The Fugitives is M rated because of all the profanity, and because it’s in French and subltitled we’d all learn French swear words. Mr R told us not to use them, of course, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t interested.

In homeroom something amazing happened: One of the populars said something halfway sensible. We were talking about boys, and they were being their usual idiotic selves and offering to set me up with one, then they asked me what my type was. I told them. And everyone started trying to do the Vulcan salute (most of them failing miserably) and talking about that. Next they’ll start doing French again or squeeing when they realise they have double maths.

OMG OMG OMG. I am SO EXCITED. So, y’know, ignoring the fact that I’m royally pissed off that Universal’s Islands of Adventure’s definition of “spring” is royally caked up no matter what part of the Northern hemisphere you live in (June 18th is well past spring, especially in Florida), because if their definition of the Potter theme park opening in spring 2010 was caked up, it would have been open during the 2 weeks I was here, rather than opening this Friday, when I’m leaving today.

But excitement. Because I’m sitting in the Tampa airport, getting ready to fly home, and the Tampa Tribune today had an article on the Potter theme park. And while small, and not much in the way of uber awesome rides, necessarily–well, the dragon ride will be good,. but they’re just making over the existing Duelling Dragon ride for that, rather than making a new ride–it will be flammy, by the looks of it.

And while I’m still pissed that they don’t know what spring is, meaning I won’t get to go for awhile….I have already determined that, as I did for freshman year, I am coming down to visit my relatives in Florida this coming spring break. Which means….This November, not only will I be viewing the (horrible) DH movie part 1, I shall also be going to the HP theme park. *squeeage*

Just a few minutes ago, I scrolled through the posts on the Time-Travel thread and I had extreme deja-vu; the exact same thing that happened in my dream happened for real. I EVEN HAD THE EXACT SAME THOUGHT! I didn’t even remember the dream until after it initially happened. It was like seeing a video of what I had dreamed. Very creepy.

Basically, it’s a big ol’ system of getting images of old books accurately into digital text–proofreading, formatting, yada yada. So that’s what I’ve been doing. Where’s some Vulcan logic when you need it? We went to a computer lab in homeroom, so someone started an idiotic class email. “lets all be BFFLs. that means best friends for life just for those of you slightly uncooler kids who do not understand” Then all the populars started obsessing over *shudder* Justin Beiber. I considered sending them the “SAREK: More logical than you since 2164” poster, but if that crowd knew anything at all about Star Trek, they’d be making idiotic comments about pon farr. We had some work to do, but we all played games instead. The girl next to me forgot to turn her sound off so there was a burst of music and everyone heard. Then they blamed me. Illogical much? VALVE ANNOUNCES MAKING GAMES IS HARD

June 9, 2010 — Aperture Science, doing business as Aperture Laboratories LLC, in partnership with Valve today announced the successful completion of an ethics-review-panel-supervised release date restructuring process. Portal 2, the sequel to the ground-breaking title that earned over 30 Game of the Year awards despite missing its original ship date, is now targeted for a 2011 release.

Representatives from both companies acknowledged that public safety concerns factored into the decision. They went on to say that even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won’t instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time.

“Also, the game will be even better,” they added, missing an historic opportunity to create the first product delay press release to mention that a product is being delayed to make it worse.

To ask questions about how close we all came to dying, or to ask futile questions about the previously announced E3 ***PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD’S SAKE*** surprise or, less futilely, to schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve’s delegate to the EU’s Valve Time Studies Group.

Five minutes before I leave for school but I’ll try to post a SHORT description of my DC trip here for those of you who dislike long posts.

The first day was irrelevant. On the second day, I showed my movie to the judges, was interviewed, and then went to the university hall ( we were at the University of Maryland ). On my way out I saw these people and one of them had a red bandana and one had a bag of pins ( we all get state pins, which we trade ). I still needed a pin from Vermont and the bag of pins looked like they were from Vermont so I asked the people if they were from Vermont. “No, New York,” said the guy with the bandana. “New York – do you know Jake?” I asked, and he said, “I”m Jake.” That’s Fishy! It was totally meant to be because I don’t know how we would have found each other otherwise if we hadn’t been in the university store at the same time. Later that night was the dance and it was horrible but I got to talk to Fishy and NSWAT and Daisy*Chain, the latter two of whom were on the phone. Third day we went into DC. Same with the fourth day. The fifth day was the awards ceremony. I didn’t place or get any special prizes but I got eleventh and that’s still pretty good. Also New Mexico were all running around with a sign that said “FEAR THE CHILE”. Then I took a ten hour bus ride home.

We certainly appreciate the virtues of good composition practices, but please keep in mind that not everyone operates at the same skill level — especially on a blog that serves such a wide range of ages — and everyone makes mistakes. Among other points to consider, you never know when you might be scaring away someone who has a learning disability or simply doesn’t type well. Over the years I’ve worked with some wonderful, intelligent people who, because of dyslexia or other problems, couldn’t spell their way properly through a short paragraph if their lives hung in the balance.

I’ve survived five days with my classmates on sports week away from home.

A list of horrible things I have endured:

    1. The food we got was a hidden attempt to poison me and it tasted like nothing. Plus the paper cups were recycled and you could only drink this disgusting juice that grew increasingly watered down by the day. I’m usually not picky, but I felt nauseous after many meals.

    2. The food we bought. Chips, Chocolate, weird candy cherries and the pickles (I skipped those)… Nothing healthy at all.

    3. The sailing lessons were actually not bad, except we got put into beginner bathtubs without hiking straps and I was the only one who could sail. At least those things were amazingly hard to capsize… The last day was the worst: the wind was kinda strong and we let (name) steer. Me: “(name), let’s keep going a few meters so we can gain ground to the windward, then tack.” Of course, (name) spontaneously does a jive and as usual, I have to warn (name) and L. and guide the boom so that (name) doesn’t get brained because of course she didn’t duck long enough. Add waves and stress. Where is this supposed to be fun? Let’s just say I sat out that last lesson. Amazingly, there were only two casualties and no fatalities.

    4. Tennis. Mesa very, very embarrassed. And our teacher was this old annoying guy and it rained so I couldn’t wear all my pretty dresses and J tried to flirt and just ended up being as annoying as hell. And we missed half of our classes because the timetables got changed every time the weather changed.

    5. The weather. Rain- we were soaked to the bone and nothing dried despite blowdrying.

    6. The room. There was an ant road across our “living area” (couch + tv). They did a better job of cleaning up scraps than the cleaning lady.

    7. The other people. Being a girl, I only got to be alone on the toilet and when I went running. Literally. Otherwise there was always someone else around. I’m very introverted, so this was excruciating.

    8. The bugs. Surprisingly, this was a slam dunk. I got a rash from the bugs spray so I stopped using it, but only got three bites that aren’t swollen at all compared to everyone else. Perhaps I taste bad- or maybe those 1 1/2 liters of tonic water weren’t such a dumb idea after all.

In short: I’m alive, well and
