Myths and Legends, v. 2010

Considering how much we love them, it’s odd that we haven’t had a new thread like this since

    Yay!

Wait… We haven’t had a new thread like this since… when?

It’s really interesting how many myths are so similar over so many different cultures. Did they evolve independently, or were they influenced by one another?

… We had a thread like this? Whyyyy was I not informed?
Yay, myths/legends! In response to your question, AmbyMac, I’ve wondered about that for forever? I mean, so many cultures have a flood story, a “how we gained knowledge and with knowledge unhappiness” story… The similar characters are explicable, because tricksters and kings and heroes are just fun. But stories with practically the same plot are just kind of whoa.
Also, Tam Lin. YAAAAY Tam Lin! I never get tired of telling that story and it’s the awesomest story ever! Faeries are fun!

How timely. I have to read the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid this summer for AP Latin next year.

what is to stop us, the future of culture and society, from creating our own lore? (or at least mixing the best scraps of cultural mythology)

    could we do it?

thomas luther, you’ll get more responses to your posts if you stick with one blog name for a while. It would also help if you would go to the “Welcome, Neophytes!” thread and tell us a few things about yourself, such as how old you are, what connection (if any) you have to Muse, and how you found MuseBlog.

Yeah – I’m getting kind of confused by all the name changes. I mean, I know you’re thomas luther/elderly lady/helpless nurse or whatever, because of your avatar, but it’s not the best thing to do to keep changing your name, because it annoys people.

Thanks, GAPAs! I wanted a thread like this because I wanted to post this myth that I wrote for English on it, so here it is: ( SUPER AMAZING COOKIE PIES IF YOU READ IT )

Thousands of years ago, when the Earth was taking shape, the first trees were created. The very first tree was a tree spirit named Emi. She had a tall, strong brown trunk and yellow and orange leaves covering all of her long branches. Emi was young and she was beautiful and innocent. She stood tallest of everything that surrounded her and was the glory of her land. Nothing could equal Emi’s majesty and loveliness. The animals adored her and would often scamper around her roots and up her branches. Emi loved to be loved, and was very happy in the first years of her life.

Emi liked very much to watch the creation of new plants and creatures. Each day she would look out over the hills and mountains around the Aegean Sea to see new life coming up everywhere. It was in this way that she first saw Pan. He was a spirit of wheat and he was so handsome that Emi immediately fell in love with him. She admired his golden head and his long, slim body and decided that she must have him for herself. Emi wanted Pan to notice her, and she called all the summer songbirds to sit in her branches and sing songs of her praise to him. But Pan was not moved by their song. So Emi bore for him shiny ruby-colored fruit and golden acorns, and dropped them by his feet. But Pan took no notice of these gifts. Emi tried to make herself even more beautiful and all her leaves took on a blush of red. But Pan ignored even this display of brilliance. Emi decided perhaps he did not like her leaves, and as the air became colder, she dropped her precious frock to the ground. Still Pan did not acknowledge her, and so, frustrated and ashamed, Emi spent all winter with only a thin layer of ice covering her branches.

By spring, Emi had grown quite desperate. Pan refused to acknowledge her presence and seemed to be immune to all charm. Emi was distraught and did not know what she might do to gain Pan’s affection. She missed her leaves, though, and began to put out buds to cover herself once more. That spring was the first spring that flowers grew. They came bursting out of the earth in mantles of all colors, making Emi’s elegant trunk look dull in comparison. They danced on their green stalks in the breeze. They were so young and so dazzling that they overshadowed even Emi’s loveliness. And when cold-hearted Pan saw them, he was so awed by their colors that he fell immediately in love with the flower spirits.

When Emi saw Pan looking lovingly at the flowers, her heart broke. She groaned with such agony that all the birds in her branches flew off in fright. She was so frustrated that the flowers had captured Pan’s heart so easily, while she had loved him so faithfully, that she wept sticky tears. And when she gazed at the flowers shining in the sun, she felt such deep jealousy that her new leaves turned green, the very color of envy. That is why, each spring and summer when the flowers come out, the leaves of all the trees turn green as a result of Emi’s jealousy of the flower spirits Pan loved.

This is a nice one. I didn’t make this, but I’ll share it with you:

Greek legend says that humans were originally created with four arms, four legs, and two faces. Zeus, the king of the gods, feared they would be too powerful and split them in half. Ever since, humans have wandered the world, looking for their other half.

An excellent song that goes along with/illustrates this myth is “The Origin of Love (which is from the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch).” I recommend listening to the song if you liked the concept…
