Dark (Pink) Energy

Warning! What you are about to see — should you brave the jump — is extremely disturbing. (Robert especially should approach with caution.) We will not be responsible for any mental damage incurred.

Technical note: you will need a decent screen size to make it work. Handheld devices are not big enough. Click on the images for larger versions. Also, you may need to watch it closely for a moment or two to get the full effect (at your peril). Let your eyes move around.

  1. …yep, I’m brain-washed. Everyone run for your lives, I’ve got a WiiStation Move remote and I’m not afraid to use it.

      1. Yes, when you scroll quickly, they seem to jump around and switch position by 90 degrees.

  3. The first one is rolling everywhere, but the second one is just… pulsating for me. Which is actually much more terrifying.

  4. I feel a bit dizzy. And my eyes hurt.
The first one rolls more than the second, which pulses more than the first. (At least, for me, that’s the way it is.)

  5. ughhh….pink….dark…energy…..WE INTERUPT THIS POST TO BRING YOU A NEWS BULLITEN: Clare de Lune has officially lost it, and is now simply mummering incoherent warnings against HBPs and so-called “dark energy” she also complains frequently of a spliting headache. We advise staying away at all costs, as we are unsure as to whether she is contagious.

          1. Well, I suppose Magic Pills could work too, depending on the pill, but Ginger Ale has been established as a known bunny-repellant…

  6. That’s creepy. When I scroll down, every single bunny starts spinning in a circle except the one I’m looking at.

  9. Hmm, at first glance, the bunnies seem to be spinning and going down. At second glance, they’re still spinning down, but they’re going in a wave pattern.

By the way, I don’t have any depigmentizer darts on me, could someone cure BEETLES – HPB ? Also, I don’t seem to be turning into a bunny, could I be resisting the picture? I’m not easily influenced, and that pink napkin next to me is as repulsive to me as ever. Well, actually, it’s not too horrible… not horrible at all…actually, it’s kind of nice… pretty… very pretty… must fold into bunny shape… bunnies are soo cute… BUNNIES

  14. I can’t do these things :( I never seem to be able to see them. Those “magic pictures” have never worked for me either, alas.

Maybe I’ll try later with my contacts in, I tried for 5 seconds with my glasses and now my eyes hurt D:

    1. Guilty. (The bunnies made me do it.) The basic layout came from a Photoshop tutorial on creating optical illusions, using a simple oval. I adapted the idea for Illustrator because the vector format made this easier to make changes. Each bunny is a special graphic Illustrator calls a symbol. All I have to do now is swap out the symbol and everything else updates automatically.

By the way, the illusion works in a completely different way from the stereoscopic pictures. The effect depends on the how the eye travels along the high contrast outlines around each bunny. That’s why the enlargements work better; they give the eyes room to move around.

  16. I guess I’ve been fighting HPBs for too long (4 years now – wow!) because I’m not going nuts. Yes, I can see the rolling and spinning and such, but I don’t find it particularly mesmerizing. In fact, I’m probably still wearing my BunnyProof Suit!

  17. Tip (or not): if you move your eyes horizontally from one side of the picture to the other, the first one (at least for me) gave of a more hypnotic effect.
I copied and pasted the two images into PowerPoint, made them fill each slide, and then zoomed in to 100%. Really great effect.
