    Welcome to the eighth month!

Wait a minute, that’s not right.
    Octo… hmmm…
Ah, a Roman to Gregorian calendar switchover mixup!

In any case, I wish Northerners a crisp Autumn, and Southerners a thawing Spring.

  6. My word of the day: “dormiveglia” (Italian, “sleep-waking”)

We don’t have an exact equivalent in English; it’s what we refer to technically as “hypnagogia” (state between waking and sleeping) and “hypnopompia” (the state between sleeping and waking).

I love words and phrases in other languages that express things simply in fewer words than English. I use a lot of Spanish ones in my everyday thought and speech, including “Estadosunidense” (“From the United States”), “así será” (“That which shall be”) and “pero no mas” (“But not anymore”.)

Or “entrepernar”, a word I randomly found in the dictionary and whose definition I precisely recall: “to put one’s legs between those of another”.

Or the word for green beans, which is literally translated as “green Jews”.

Or “ningunear”, which is basically to make someone into a no-one–it’s more than just shunning or ignoring someone; it’s removing the very concept of their identity.

In a somewhat similar concept, “tutear”, which is the verb for addressing someone by the informal form of “you” instead of the formal, which is more a matter of familiarity than pure syntax.

I use non-English words all the time for extra meaning- chic for example, but I can’t help but feel like some of those are cheating…
I don’t really speak Spanish, but it looks like desen amorán dose literally means falling out of love, doesn’t it? And Estados unid ense?
Eehhh recombining roots is standard procedure I guess.
I once accidentally taught some French kids that English for un peu de is alittlebitte. :P

          The etymology is slightly different:

          Amor = love
          Amar = to love
Enamorar = en+amor+ar = to cause someone to love, to enamor someone
          Enamorando = enamoring
Enamorarse = enamorar+se = to cause yourself to love, to fall in love
Desenamorarse = des+enamorarse = become de-enamored, fall out of love
Desenamorándose = falling out of love

    Beetles: I’m sorry….That really sucks.

I’ve never actually read those books, myself, and on a semi related note, I was having an “argument” the other day with someone over whether the Harry Potter series or Series of Unfortunate Events (and Harry Potter vs the Baudelaire children) were better.

He was telling me how SoUE and the Baudelaire kids are so much better than HP series/HP (specifically, that the Baudelaires could kick Harry’s ***). I had no real interest in the conversation (hello, haven’t read them, can’t really say how SoUE compares), plus the guy had never read/watched any of HP, so that was my real irritation, there: You can’t say the one’s better, if you’ve never read or watched the other.

Anyways, that really has no bearing on anything, and I’m very sorry that you didn’t get to go.

Honestly, I don’t like the SoUE books very much. They started off fine but then got really repetitive. And unlike in Harry Potter, the author seems to have had no particular ending in mind and tied off about 10% of the story and left about 90% loose ends.

Yeah. That’s probably why the movie was only the first three books. The rest are a bit boring. But there are some good moments. “The Slippery Slope” was good. Violet and Sunny both growing up a bit.

I always liked the later books in the series better. I loved them all when I first read them, but in retrospect, I think that the first few were fairly repetetive. But I liked how the author left so many loose ends.

        • bluefire27 and Drake (^o^) says:

If you read “The Unauthorized Autobiography of Lemony Snicket”, and you’ve read the series, it ties off some loose ends. If you haven’t read the series, it just creates more loose ends.

    October! *insert confetti*

I’m throwing around the idea of having a birthday party again this year. (yes, this is very random…fyi my birthday also isn’t until the end of November, so I’m thinking about this rather early, but oh well…) I tend to overthink this kind of thing (actually, I tend to overthink a lot of things, but that’s a different post), but I promised myself last year I wouldn’t go to the trouble of having a party this year. They’re just not really my thing, I sort of got talked into it, and the whole thing ended up just being kind of boring in hindsight. Plus, I was having some friends issues then, so I was kind of in a “I’m sort of your friend but not really because I don’t understand all the crap you’ve been throwing at me lately but I’ll invite you to my party because there’s no one else” sorta stage, which didn’t exactly add anything positive to the whole she-bang.

But this year, I have a) new, awesome, friends who share many of the same interests as me and b) the HP movie is coming out only days before my birthday and c) my friends and I would probably see it together anyway so d) why not turn it into a party? Yeah. That was the thought process. But now, all of a sudden, we’re throwing around the idea of having a HP movie marathon (YES) either before/after we see HP7, but not sure if my mom’s golden on that yet. And I’ve never been that comfortable with hosting stuff anyway…I don’t know why, you would think I would enjoy this kind of thing, it’s just…I don’t know. The whole overthinking thing again. *sigh* We’ll figure something out.

There’s also my sister, who basically wants to do THEEXACTSAMETHING for her birthday, even though her birthday is in October. So I don’t even know how that’s gonna happen….

A HP marathon would be very cool, but maybe you could spread it out over a couple of weeks since you have time? You know, do the first movie soon, and then a week later do the second, and then do the third in a few days, until you’re watching the 6th on/near your birthday.

Orrr…you could just watch the 6th, or just have a general Potter-mania party and have everyone dress up and make wands and all of that fun stuff in preparation for HP7. :D

Two of my friends have November birthdays, and we’re all planning to go see the movie (hopefully a midnight premier) in full costume. I mean, we would anyways, but the birthday part makes it better.

Last year’s AP bio kids always hang out with our teacher in the classroom before class starts. Yesterday, they decided that we were going to be their players in their “Fantasy AP Bio Team”. Yes, like Fantasy Football. These are true nerds here. They’re playing for money, but we don’t get any. My teacher thinks they’re crazy; the look she gave them when they told her was hysterical. They sent a sheet around the class yesterday, and we all put our names an averages on it. Today, they made a list of our names by grade. (I’m number five!)

Holy cake. 23 more episodes, and I’ll have watched 348 episodes of Classic Who–that’s half the episodes. Sure, not half season wise (that’d put me mid Season 10, out of 26), but it’s half the episodes. I can easily see that happening this weekend. I’m not sure whether to find that exciting or depressing, that I’ve almost watched half of Classic Who….

OMG, and I’ve watched about 190 episodes of Classic Who since returning to college. That’s….about…let’s see 190 times 23 minutes….divide by 60….That’s about 72.8333333 hours of Classic Who I’ve watched in the past month and a smidge. That’s 3 solid DAYS of Classic Who. And in total I’ve spent a bit over 5 solid days watching Classic Who, all told. That’s….cake, probably more than twice the amount of TV I watched in an average *year* growing up. College what have you done to me??????????

Yeepers. I swear the Doctor’s “time flow analog” device he just rigged up in “Time Monster” all the way back in the 70s reminds me quite a bit of the Eleventh Doctor’s…thing…he rigged up in The Lodger. Much smaller in “Time Monster”, mind you, thus looking significantly less ridiculous, but the concept seems quite similar….

I do so love it when there are things in Classic Who that I recognize from New Who, because, I dunno, it just reinforces that it’s all the same and epically brilliant, and I dunno. It’s just awesome.

So pretty much today was Murphy’s law in action for me…

First, I woke up 2 minutes after my first class started, so I had to dress in 2 seconds and run to class. I got there about 10 minutes late… So I have a tardy now… Although 1 tardy isn’t too big a deal, so I’ll live… But still, bad.

Then at lunch today, the casing of my laptop really breaks and my Internet switch breaks off, so I have to go to the tech support people and have my computer sent in for repairs. Which means I have a loaner tablet, which is a worthless piece of junk… It’s slow, and the space bar barely works. Also, it fails and finding Internet signals… It took me 10 minutes and going downstairs to get it to connect to my house’s network. And I don’t even have Internet at school at the moment, because the tech support people make you go to the student computer people, and there weren’t any to be found, even in the place where there are *always* student computer people.

Also, I had gone to see Romeo and Juliet (which was freaking amazing) last night, so I got back at 11:30 PM with all my homework left. So I did some of it and planned to finish the rest (which was all reading) in the morning and at lunch, but my alarm didn’t go off, and I had to go take my computer to be fixed at lunch, so I didn’t have time to do the reading. So then I had to get my friend to summarize Doctor Faustus and the reading about Buddhism for me… It sucked.

I woke up at 7:40, went back to sleep and woke up/went downstairs at 8:00. Then I decided to show up halfway through the kids class so I went to sleep on the couch downstairs with a blanket wrapped around me so my dog couldn’t lick my face. I woke up at 9:00, still tired, and had one yogurt.

really guys? this is really what we’re talking about? okay so i won’t even talk about the LATEST i’ve been up, because the LATEST i’ve been up beats you all out and sort of covers multiple days so it’s hard to figure it. let’s just go with, oh, i don’t know, LAST NIGHT. so last night i was out until 3ish, went back to my dorm with this kid and watched random stuff on youtube until probably around 6:30 AM. sometime post-then we both fell asleep, then woke up at 8:30 and i was like “OMG I AM GOING TO BE LATE” because i was volunteering at the gaming con today, which started at 9 (which i just got back from and was super fun btw). so now would be my optimal nap time but i can sort of just tell it’s not going to happen, because i just ate. and i don’t have time later, because i’ve got some errands to run and then i’m going out to dinner and then i’m going to RHPS. so i probably won’t get to bed tonight until 3 at the earliest.

thursdays for me are the most packed besides weekends (weekends i don’t HAVE to stay up late, i just do). thursdays are generally over a 20-hour day this quarter…up at 6AM for work, got stuff going on until 2ish in the morning. granted, it’s mostly fun stuff – work, brit lit, history, band, fencing, gaming

Well, possibly, but that just doesn’t sound quite right….” And then tonight, some humanoid aliens were referring to some humans as Tellurians, and me being clueless as I am, was wondering when the Doctor was going to correct them, and say they weren’t Tellurians, they were from Earth (because I hadn’t actually deduced the obvious that Tellurians=humans from Earth). I was actually wondering if they thought they were from Telos, or something, so when the serial was over, i googled, and learned that not only is “tellurians” an actual word, it’s what the inhabitants of Earth are…

So, yes, I’ve decided that I’m going to refer to myself as a Tellurian in conversation whenever it makes even the slightest bit of sense to do so….

I suppose that is the nominative, yes. For some reason I’m more familiar with the genitive. Oh well, the genitive more clearly shows the connection between Latin and English.

          Pie 0

          • Technically, one starts with the genitive when turning Latin names into English adjectives. The genitive form of Mars is “Martis,” so Mars becomes Martian (or martial, in the case of music, spirit, or arts). Ditto with Tellus, Telluris, Tellurian.

Venus is an exception. The genitive is Veneris, so the word for something of or pertaining to Venus ought to be “Venerian.” But that word has never caught on, probably because sexually transmitted diseases used to be called venereal diseases, so English-speaking scientists and most other people say “Venusian.”

I used to think about trying to reintroduce “Venerian,” but I decided I was already getting enough funny looks.

They may have been here first, but we’re just as much native inhabitants as they are…so we’re really both earhlings, just different varieties….

Speaking of Silurians, I love how in the very first Silurian serial (which is *extremely* similar to the last Silurian serial), the Silurians state they are going to return to hibernation for 50 years before trying to take back Earth again–and 50 years later is exactly when the Eleventh Doctor’s Silurian adventure unfolds….

and then Doctor Who, and now I’m not quite sure what it was I ahd against sci-fi, maybe I just never read the right books when I was younger, or maybe my tastes have just branched out…

But Harry Potter, I knew who he was, he was just a kid like me who waved a wand and said some words and made things happen, that wasn’t complicated at all.

29 et replies (staying up late/weird hours for sleep)~ I’m a tall ships sailor. Weird schedules? Been there. While working? Totally. While on shore leave? Oh yeah. When your sleeping schedule is that screwed up already there’s no use fighting it, it’s way easier to just go with it. Like, you’re working part of the day, then dock, throw a party, are up late, get up at 7AM and work all day with an hour off, then have maybe another hour later, then hop in the car and go for a 6 hour road trip, get to the place you’re staying, unload your stuff, make the bed, get something to eat, take a shower, (by this point it’s 3:00 or 3:30 or thereabouts) then STAY UP and go to bed sometime after sunrise, wake up at maybe noon, and finally end up mostly dressed and ready to eat around 3PM.
Or, you could have had the previous half day off, then lazed around most of the day, decide to go get food around 11, pick up crabapples on your way back, watch a movie starting at 1AM, when finished with that hang out for awhile more, then decide to go run around a parking lot from maybe 4 to 5AM and the come back inside, talk more and eventually fall asleep. Wake up the next morning around 8 wondering where you are, since you fell asleep on the couch and your buddy fell asleep lying on the table.

So, today was fun. I got to see Glasseh! And Robert! And see Morris Dancers! Including Glasseh! And eat food! And it was good! And that’s a lot of exclamation points. Imma go to bed now, since I have to be up at 6 tomorrow to go to…..DELAWARE! Probably. Maybe. I don’t know if we will or not. But by gum I’ll be up if mom decides to go.

I know this has been discussed plenty of times before, but recently I was thinking (yes, thinking! really!). And I came to the conclusion of this, which was, you know how everyone gets all wrapped up about popularity? Or at least, how everyone thinks everyone else gets all caught up in who’s popular, who’s not, etc? Well, I was just realizing that, at least at my school, there are really only two kinds of people.

There are the kinds of people who despise popularity and put a mark of “popularity” on every girl in this certain group, regardless of whether or not they’re actually nice or mean or interesting or fun or not. And whenever they see the group, they groan and say “oh, there goes the populars..again” Just because they have a certain set of friends, just like us. And then there are the kids who don’t really think twice about this whole popularity thing – they might watch some movies and see the stereotypes and laugh, but they don’t apply it to real life, or at least, not in a visible sense.

And then I thought about this really novel idea, really, really brilliant (yes, sarcasm) which was, “hey, what if we were just all nice to one another? Then maybe we could all be popular, and everything would just be flowers and rainbows and unicorns.” Which of course it wouldn’t be, but that’s beside the point. It’s just that…everyone could do with a little kindness and a little less cruelty these days, and I’m tired of all the gossip and fluff and just not being able to get away from it, mainly because of my school size, but that’ll all change next year. That’s all.

I’d like to say I judge people based on their actual qualities, but… I tend to like people I don’t see much of better if they’re smart. Even though some of the girls in my math class are really annoying and are mostly in the popular group(there are basically two large groups, who are fairly different but overall act the same, if that makes any sense), and some of the freak girls most people outside my general group completely ignore get really bad marks, and that Year 10 jerk on my bus who’s always calling me gay is really smart, and so on and so on. I know I shouldn’t, but it’s so much easier, and a lot of the time it works. But I do try to be nice to everyone I don’t actively hate, because I don’t want to be cliquey.

I still don’t like those “why don’t we all be one big happy year group” talks though.

OK, I’m frustrated… Just got in a fight with my roommate. Which doesn’t happen much, but when you have people with such disparate beliefs, it happens sometimes.

For some background, I am an extremely liberal secular Jew (and an atheist). (If you don’t believe that Jews can be atheists, google secular Judaism. I don’t feel like defending it again.) My roommate is a conservative, very devout Catholic. Both of us are very strong and very vocal about our beliefs.

So pretty much people were asking my roommate about me being a Jewish atheist, and she told me that she was getting sick of defending me, since she doesn’t really believe that Jews can be atheists. So then I started explaining how Jews can be atheists, and she started attacking it, because she thinks atheism and Judaism are two separate religions and therefore mutually exclusive.

And then somehow it wound up being about gay marriage. And as you can guess, we have completely opposite views about that. And that’s one issue I really don’t like arguing since it’s a bit sensitive for me, since I have a gay uncle whose wedding I was at. (It was in Canada.)

Yeah, so pretty much I love my roommate, but I’m really fed up with her Catholicism.

As in, she believes that humans were created on the 7th day that the world existed. She also doesn’t believe in the Big Bang. She also wants to be a scientist… I’m not quite sure how this works.

Oh, God, abortion… I’m very much pro-choice. She’s a pro-life activist. And she always tries to talk about how she’s always picked on and called a monster because she believes that women shouldn’t have an abortion even if they were raped and the pregnancy is life-threatening. I figured I’d come here rather than the Just Friends thread, because it’s deserted and I need someone to talk to.

My close friend from school, we’ll call her Red, is ditching me, and it’s really annoying and obvious. It all started when she and her sister Blue went up north with this one girl, Yellow, from our grade, and then they became all ‘buddy-buddy’ and started ignoring everyone else that’s not in their exclusive little Three Musketeers, even though I stand up for them constantly. (To make matters worse, they talk about their little trips up north around everyone, as if it makes them really special and cool, when in reality nobody actually cares.)

Then, when we got back to school, things were worse. First, Red stopped walking with me to sign-in to class each morning, and didn’t talk to me about it or even say why she was ditching me. Later, I saw her walking with Yellow, and she completely ignored me. Then, she joined stage crew for the fall play (which I can’t do because I have show choir), and so did Yellow and Blue. They constantly talk all the time now about how awesome stage crew is, and how awesome the people are, and how awesomely awesome their new, secluded lives are that don’t involve anyone else. Finally, today we had a free period and I always sit with Red during this free period. But today, she brought over Yellow and her friend Orange, and because you are only allowed to sit three to a table in the library, guess who they told to leave? Me.

So right now I’m sitting in a cubicle in the silent study room, wondering why I ever thought they were my friends and feeling like I want to cry. The End.

Wowsers. It’s all downhill from here in the wonderful world of Classic Who watching. 361 episodes down, 335 to go (341 if you count the 6 unaired episodes of the serial Shada by Douglas Adams, for which I believe an audio track was released).

Part of me is ecstatic and gleeful–I’m well on my way to completely my goal of watching every single Doctor Who episode; I’ve watched over 10 years of Who in less than one year (that’s just scary). Of course, it’s also slightly depressing, but I think the ecstatic wins out, because, yeah, I’ll be done, I’ll have finished them all (335 episodes and quite a few hours into the future), but I’ll have such wonderfully fond memories, and I can always go back and watch any of them whenever I want to….

Unfortunately, they all start to blur together, after awhile. But on the bright side, a side-effect of this blurring, is for the most part, i couldn’t even begin to tell you if a given episode I watched was a reconstruction or not, because I think my brain has formed moving picture memories for the recons, so except for ones like the Yeti which stand out in my memory as being recons (because I was having a hard time focusing, poor quality stills, and equally poor audio), most of them have incorporated themselves into my memory as actual episodes.

And I just watched the very last of the black and white episodes (that is, the last episode of the Third Doctor that only exited in B&W and not colour), although the black and whiteness never bothered me….

And I love all the Doctors, though Hartnell is probably lowest on my list, and Troughton probably top (of Classic Doctors, I’m not sure I can compare the classic to the new), although I really like Pertwee, too, they’re so different, it’s hard to say. And I loved them together on The Three Doctors.

All of this talk about the Yankees reminded me of something that happened back in 8th grade when we were doing the American Civil War in History class.

One of the boys in our class didn’t know that “Yankee” was a term for people from the northern part of the United States as well as a member of New York’s baseball team, and we were reading some primary source document where the author said “I am killing Yankees daily.”

    That boy shouted “HEY!”

    It was hysterical.

This post is going to be quick, but not really.
Today, was awesome. Well, mostly chem was awesome. We talked about possessed pumpkins for the first half of the period, then tried to open up my soup thermos for a quarter of the period, then had cereal (this has become a regular practice), then talked about dying, coffins, and funeral homes. It was just an all-over-the-place class.
In Spanish, we did dialogues on a mother looking for her lost son. My friend and I made the kid looking like a mix between Ron and Harry, complete with a lightning scar, and round glasses. The mother sounded like she cared at first, but towards the end, it was revealed that she didn’t feed her Ron/Harry child. The detective whose help she was enlisting wouldn’t even look for her child because he said she was a bad mother, and the mother agreed. We read this in front of the class, and I couldn’t even finish it. I was laughing too hard.
In AP bio, the Fantasy AP bio team rosters were put up (I was the third one chosen, and everyone was arguing whose team I would be on, apparently). The teacher has finally given in, telling us that it would just simplify things so much if we just allowed her to tell the older kids our grades. That took up half of class as well.
In Euro, the teacher was sick, so we didn’t do anything in that class either.
We sat around and talked in P.E. due to the rain.
In band, we didn’t have to march for the fourth day in a row because of the rain. It would be really cool if we didn’t have to march at homecoming…
Yeah, today was a really easy day…

Heh, so Mom sent me an email with advise on “How to Feel Good as an Artist or Craftsperson” and one of the pieces was “Learn early on that our families, particularly our parents, don’t have a clue what we do. Be kind. Be firm. Let them know that you are respected by your peers and occasionally show them work that is within their realm of understanding. Do not show them work that would make them despise you or call you a pornographer. (You can tell I had some issues with my mother here.)”
I wonder if she didn’t read that, or just figure it applied to her only.
At any rate, I think I might just repeat that at some point. *sigh*

Today I was writing a summary of Dracula in Arabic, and I realized how dramatic and sensational a story it is. It’s hard to tell in English because of the old-fashioned language, but translating the plot line really made me look at it differently….Mostly the mood whiplash from the first chapter to the second. Jonathan Harker’s all trapped in the castle, fearing for his life…and we cut to Lucy and her 3 proposals. It’s a classic cliffhanger trick, and I didn’t even notice it until now. And the whole plot just seemed hilarious.

(Conversation during class about my essay, partially translated)
    “Wait…why is Jonathan consulting Dracula?”
“Uh. Because Dracula wants to move there. It’s part of his plot to drink English people’s blood.”

But, yeah. Family in FL and HP theme park are kind of a constant….What would be really nice, would be if Hurricane Who weren’t in October, but rather November, over Thanksgiving.

*sigh* I’ll just have to try and make a mental note that, if by some total miracle I actually have time off next Thanksgiving (very, very possible I will not, if all goes as planned and I’m in vet school–wow, directly thinking about being in vet school in a years time is seriously mind blowing. And looking at the schedule for this years VM1s, and comparing it to the schedule for ChicagoTARDIS, there’s doesn’t look to be a chance in hell that I’m going to have my Thanksgiving break at the same time…Although *fingers crossed* maybe they just don’t say break is 22-28, but rather 22-26, since 27&28 are a Saturday and Sunday (CT is 26-28 this year, which assuming time frames are the same for each, puts it being unlikely I’d have the days off)….But maybe these two days are implied, although I wouldn’t bet on it, since it is vet school, and who knows what required things might be going on even on weekends…Hmmm. *sigh* I dunno.

Then I painted a fire with dark reds/oranges/yellows, took some yellow and dark purple and white tissue paper and made the fire have texture, mod-podged the whole thing, and painted it again. Then I copied out all my fire-related quotes onto paper that has an old sort of tint to it, burned the edges of everything, and mod-podged those on. I’ve just played the strangest game of Monopoly. First off, because me and a friend are playing it through the computer. I have the board and the pieces, she has the money and the calculator, and I have the Chance and the Community Chest cards. Oh, and we each have a dice.
Basically, we’ve been using chat on Gmail to tell each other what we rolled on the dice. I would move the pieces on the board, and tell her who landed on what, the prices, and other assorted Need-To-Knows. Say it was her turn, and she rolled a four and landed on Oriental Avenue, which she did. I would tell her the price, in this case, $100, she would say “*buys it*”, and would be the banker and buy it. Then I would find the card for Oriental Avenue, and put it in her pile. Pretty much the same for when it was my turn.
For Chance, or Community Chest, if landed on and it was her who landed on it, she would guess what was on the card. It happened four times, all for Chance. (She guessed them all right!) And then I would pick up the card from the top of the pile and ‘read’ it to her.

    We ended up with this:
Me: Pennsylvania Avenue, Marvin Gardens, Pennsylvania Railroad, Connecticut Avenue, Reading Railroad, and Mediterranean Avenue.
I went to jail three times.

Her: Oriental Avenue, Kentucky Avenue, St. Charles Place, North Carolina Avenue, and Vermont Avenue.

After that we kind of stopped playing because we got distracted by talking about whose house we were going to have our Star Wars/Star Trek Marathon at.

So, y’all know that movie coming out on November 19 of this year? The one that everyone is anticipating with excitement, misplaced hope, and much trepidation? The one that’s been billed for MONTHS as going to be shown not only in 2D, but also 3D? Yeah. That one. The first half of the last HP movie.

It’s been announced today that it is not going to be in 3D afterall, because despite them telling us all for countless months that it would be in 3D, despite all the advertising and marketing, and EVERYTHING saying 3D, they apparently somehow just realized that they can’t get it converted to 3D in time, and so are scrapping the 3D altogether.

Ummm, what? I mean, I greatly appreciate that they’re not pushing back the release date (there’d be an insane, angry mob out to lynch the person responsible), but really? You’ve been advertising 3D for months. Why do this if there was (obviously a pretty good) probability that you wouldn’t have 3 dimensionalized in time?

Because the mere fact that it’s not going to be in 3D doesn’t bother me–I’ve gone to and hated all the previous 6 without them being in 3D–it’s the principle of it. It’s the fact that they’ve been billing it as 3D for ages now, and then suddenly reneging on this. If it had just been billed as 2D, never any mention of 3D, I would care in the slightest that it’s now just 2D again, and now 3D at all. Because it’s not like I was expecting good 3D, I was rather disappointed with Alice in Wonderland’s 3D, but for them to advertise it as such and not deliver, that bugs me.

Um… No, actually. If you’re playing properly you should be putting a lot of air through the horn at all times.

However, Beedle, I would choose oboe. I play both violin and oboe and I can tell you that if you already play flute, oboe will be an exponentially easier switch. The fingerings are more similar, whereas on violin they’re completely different. I switched from sax (although, yes, I already played violin) and my friend has just switched from flute. I think I’m doing pretty well for only a year (with lessons of course) and my friend is doing phenomenally for just about two months–she can read the band music and hit most of the notes, even if her intonation and tone do need some work. Also, there are far fewer oboeists that violinists, which makes us mire unique. From a practical standpoint it also ups our chances at making all-district and such, and if you get really good I know you can get some phenomenal scholarships. On the downside, reeds are quite expensive ($10 or $15 each) and it can be hard to find good ones–I get mine from my teacher because the ones from Music and Arts collapse on you within about five seconds.

However, that said, out of my three instruments violin is my favorite to play, possibly because I’ve been playing it the longest. It’s a beautiful instrument–just listen to the violin concertos and so on played by MBers that have been posted to the blog! It’s really a lovely instrument, so I’m not saying you shouldn’t pick it. If you do, I’m sure you’ll love it. It would just be a tougher a slightly less practical switch. But hey, if you’re up ft a challenge!

Oh, wait, I just reread your post and saw the “teaching yourself” bit. I’d say it would be far, far easier to teach yourself an instrument in a family of instruments you already play. Go for oboe. :)

I played violin for a year in fourth (?) grade, so that’s why I picked that over other string instruments, like cello. I think I want to do oboe. It should be easier since it’s in the same key. The only thing is that there are like, five oboes in the band… which is strange. But I can play it for myself, I really enjoy the sound. After oboe will be violin, and then I can maybe teach myself bassoon? Double reed instruments are so cool.

83~ Oboe would most likely be the easiest to switch to and to teach yourself. If you’re going to go for violin, get a teacher or at least a friend to help you out. There are some instruments that are relatively easier to teach yourself, and violin is not one of them. There are just so many bad habits you can get that will cripple your playing if they’re not corrected immediately. I don’t know about oboe, as I’ve never played one, but seeing as it’s in the same family as the flute, which you already play, you’ll be able to use a lot of what you’ve learned transferred over.
So yeah, of the two, go for oboe. Oboe is a beautiful instrument, and yes, more unique than violin, as much as I adore the latter.
Of instruments you didn’t mention, guitar and piano are both instruments that get represented a lot, but would be good to know. Just go with something you like the sound of.

Actually, speaking of instruments, one of the things I didn’t like about the violin (and piano) was that everyone seems to play it, and I didn’t (and still don’t) want to be just like everyone else.
So I got a concertina and a mountain dulcimer for second and third instruments. It seems to work pretty well. Oh, and harpsichord as the keyboard, as well as piano. Though I’m an abysmal failure at both. I’ve never really practiced or anything though, I’m sure that’d make a difference. *sigh*
I sometimes wish I played guitar, especially in the evenings on the ship when the guitar players take over the jam sessions and I can’t do anything about it because both my instruments are loud and piercing. Ah well. I should work more on the dulcimer.

Today is a day for listening to music and painting a pair of rainboots bright colors. So that’s what I’m doing.
I have one boot done, and the other one I haven’t started on yet.
I also need to hang up some laundry.
It’s nice and warm today, and the stinkbugs are out in full force, I feel like I’m under siege, the screen door is just full of them and whenever I go outside they fall all over me from the door and the outside wall of my room. Today has been interesting.
I started out tired, as I’d gotten to be late last night. Breakfast was oatmeal, ew. Then stuff started falling apart for real.
Last night I’d mentioned to mom that if I was actually going to go to NC in a week I needed to let Pip and his family know. She replied along the lines of “yeah, let’s talk tomorrow when dad’s up to discuss this and see about his time off and when you’re not tired and know what you’re saying” Ok, fine.
Then this morning that became “Oh, well we don’t have to go THAT soon, and we’ll have to leave a day early from the visit too, since it doesn’t work with my schedule and I’m coming along.” Which I wasn’t thrilled about, seeing as I want time to visit Pip without a grumpy parent tagging along. Or even a non-grumpy parent for that matter. Because I know it wouldn’t be fun for them and I don’t think it’d be fair to invite an extra body down to his family’s house. So I presented this as a concern. A “humph” and sullen silence. (And I’m supposed to be the bratty one?)
Then other blah occurred throughout the day, ending up in me yelling then running away to my room sobbing. Not so great.
But dad somehow managed to convince her to allow me to go to NC, by myself, in my own car (instead of driving her boat of a station wagon). So that’s good…but yeah. Weird day. And then we had spanicopita (sp?) and baklava. So it wasn’t as horrible.
Also, I discovered a mouse nest in my shoebin. With dried-up baby mouse bodies. It’s kind of revolting, sad and annoying all at once.
    My eyes hurt.

I didn’t really know where to post this, but it’s my essay for history class and I just wanted to know if it’s boring or historically inaccurate or not. It’s fiction, by the way. Pies if you read it. It’s pretty long.

It had been fifteen springs since the spring of my birth when my father said to me, “Sits-in-Trees, we must take caution, for a strange people have come to our home. They have white faces and have come from the bay on huge boats.” Soon after that day, I saw them myself, as I hid in the grasses alongside the shore of the river. I watched these White Men as they stood in the river. They wore metal hats and much clothing and looked very hot. I did not understand why they filled their bowls with water over and over, as the water kept spilling out the bottom. I was afraid of the men because their language sounded angry, and because we have heard many stories from other tribes of men with pale faces who came from the ocean and killed the tribal people with powerful killing sticks. I wondered why the pale-faced men had come.
Now, it is two springs since the White Men arrived. I am sitting atop a tall pine tree, looking out into the bay. It has been a difficult two years. Many of our people have been killed by the killing sticks of the White Men, which we all fear; but very many White Men have died as well, from starvation, heat, fights, or strange diseases which make them delirious and weak. The White Men have built large wooden enclosures with strange designs scratched on the walls: 1607. They believe they are safe within and do not often venture out. However, they do not know that our noble chief Opechancanough has ordered me, and others skilled at climbing trees, to spy upon the fort day and night from the tops of trees. As I watch now, their chief, whom they call John Smith, is speaking to them in the angry language. Some are using their killing sticks on others. The White Men lack judgment. I have seen many die. Maybe they will all perish, I think, and our land will be peaceful again. Then I notice something on the bay. It is another ship like the ones the White Men arrived on. I watch it for many minutes. As the sun sets, men begin to exit the ships. There are many. I am sure they are White Men, for they are wearing metal clothing that glints in the sun. Silently I leap out of the tree and begin running to find our chief.
I spend the next four days at the edge of the forest. Many men of the tribe are here watching the ships of the White Men. There are three ships, and very many new White Men. So far they have been occupied with mooring their ships. Now we are watching as they march up to the walls the White Men have built outside the forest. The leader of the new men calls out in his language and the gate of the enclosure opens and John Smith walks out. John Smith and the new leader converse. Then the new leader must have given the order to go back to the ships, for the new White Men turn and walk towards the shore. For the rest of the afternoon the new White Men carry items from their ships to the walls. That night Chief Opechancanough calls council and we tell him what we have seen. “These are dangerous times,” the chief says. “The White Men kill us with their killing sticks. They will take over the land where we farm. We must attack. We must drive them away.” His daughter Pocahontas disagrees. She thinks we might give them food in exchange for their exotic goods, and then our tribe will benefit. But Chief Opechancanough tells her that the arrival of the White Men means the death of our people, and then she does not say anything more. The men of the council agree with the chief that we must attack. I think that if we do not display our might, the White Men will attack and kill us before we can kill them.
We decide to wait for any signs of hostility before we begin the war. Two months pass in peace. The White Men are digging farms and planting seeds, although it is late in the planting season. John Smith comes twice, bringing gifts of metal knives and glass ornaments. We give him skins and seeds in return. It seems as if there will be no war. Then at the turn of summer, something disastrous happens. As Strength-of-Bear, a man from our tribe, is hunting in the woods, he shoots a deer with an arrow. Two White Men see the deer fall and hide nearby, and as Strength-of-Bear comes to pick up the deer, they use their killing sticks on him. They steal the dead deer as Strength-of-Bear dies. This news is brought to us by Strength-of-Bear’s hunting partner, Swimming-Trout, as he bears the body back to the village. “The White Men have managed to kill a great man,” says Chief Opechancanough. “If we do not act, we will all be killed.” We begin our attack the next night. We kill the White Men’s livestock and dig up the seeds they have planted. We shoot our arrows into the fort and shoot the White Men as they try to repair their farms. The White Men use enormous monsters to launch metal balls at us, but we are always hiding and they cannot see us. So they begin sneaking into the woods with their killing sticks, shooting at anything that moves. They kill nine of our men in this way. It is chaos. Everyone is afraid that the White Men will come to our village and rampage it.
The worst happens three months after the fighting began. John Smith comes to the village with six other White Men to trade with our chief. Their food supply is depleted since their farms were damaged. “Go,” says Chief Opechancanough when John Smith meets him. “We will not trade today.” John Smith bows and turns to leave. I see the desperate faces of the men behind him. They say furious things to him. John Smith walks on. As they are leaving the village, two White Men suddenly turn and seize a basket of corn from Skies-as-Eyes, a village woman. Everyone who sees them do this is shocked: Stealing from a woman is unpardonable. Hawk-Wings and I run after the thieves. I use my bow to shoot an arrow at the neck of one man. He falls and I see that it is not a man who stole from Skies-as-Eyes. I do not see the true bandits. Then I hear a loud noise and see Hawk-Wings scream and plummet to the dirt. I turn and shoot an arrow in the direction of the sound. Another loud noise comes from behind me and suddenly I am falling too. It is the end, but I know I have been brave. All I can do now is hope that the White Men will not murder us all in this war.

    MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY!

    SO CONFLICTED. So, the backstory.
My mom volunteers in the prison with the Alternatives to Violence Program (AVP), which is basically what it sounds like, it’s a program offered to inmates to hep them learn non-violent strategies for coping with conflict. They have inmates and outsiders take the training and work together teaching the net wave of people, and it’s a highly respected program inside of the system, does a lot of good, etc. You have to be 18 to do it, and it’s always been assumed that I would take the basic training as soon as I turned 18, which I did this past spring, and now the time is coming up (this coming weekend, to be precise) and I’m signed up for it.
I want to do this, I really do, I think it’s a totally important program to support and learn about and I want to meet the guys who I’ve heard about since forever.

    But…there’s a but in here.
I just got a message from a friend of mine who I’ve recently gotten back in touch with. She’s a sailor, now living in her hometown-an hour away from me. From the 12th to the 19th is the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race, the race itself starts on Thursday. You start to see the conflict? Ahh, yes. So I was hoping to just go down tomorrow, watch the parade of sail, meet up with Elan, say hi, come home, then start AVP on Friday, except that…..I just got a note from Elan.
One of the ships needs a deckhand for the race. So basically, I could race a schooner on the Chesapeake Bay for a week. I’ve been dreaming about getting back on a boat as soon as my feet hit dry land, and I want to sail different ships and learn more and get more sea time, etc.

But I feel like I should do AVP, I mean, I’ve been signed up for it for a few months, and everyone’s expecting me to go. And I really want to! It’s just horrible, horrible timing. It makes me sick, I could be sailing, but I know if I go sailing I’ll feel terrible about skipping out of AVP.

    AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t know if any of you have been following the story about the Chilian miners who’ve been trapped underground for over 2 months now, but I’ve been trying to pay attention to the situation since it started, and so when I logged on a few minutes ago I was so happy to find out that the first miner has been rescued! They’ve gotten at least one person out now. They drilled a HUGE shaft down to where they are, and thankfully most of it is through fairly stable bedrock so only the upper portion had to have supports put in. The poor people have been down there for so long–I’m not sure I would have been able to handle it. It’s relieving to find out that the situation is close to being over!!

So have I. And it comes as good news but then I begin to question myself (I think too much; is that possible? Shouldn’t thinking be an activity that increases in value exponentially!), is this a story of human interest- survival over great odds through companionship and fortitude of will? Of the undying optimism that each person holds, if only as a response to imminent danger to continue on as he is built, a biological machine for procreation? Or of the accomplishments that technology can bring to those who fight and work and innovate? But why were those miners down there anyway, deep under 3 miles in through the Earth that is home to us all but respected by few or am I being self righteous? Did you know that we may be reaching peak copper? Imagine tearing down Liberty Enlightening the World for the copper she holds isn’t that tragic imagery.
And we are drawn to the story of 33 men deep beneath us because it holds such redeeming hope pulled up by innovation into the sunlight bright but in a place that has a record of safety violations and what does the future hold for those lucky who were not trapped and can only lead mundane lives happy for current livelihood but aware of the danger everlurking? Where are they not just in victorious Chi! Lea! but in your own country and facing bigger bosses who now run for public office I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend? When the divide seems so great and the stakes so large and the facts so confused by faces so big shouting!
And why can’t I fall asleep without distraction light books to occupy my mind to hush the recesses who howl. “America I can’t stand my own mind.”

A winter coat is black or dark brown, made of thick material, water-repellant in case snow melts on it, discreet enough to wear every day from roughly november through march and fancy enough to wear in case a formal occasion arrises and should be warm enough for temperatures down to about -10 °C.*

(The whole color thing is so the winter coat won’t clash and so the anorak stand out from the snow in case of an accident.)

I never really heard anorak until it came up in french, and then I thought it was more of a windbreaker. Turns out I use one regularly!

And it just turns out that today is also the day that HtTYD comes out on DVD. *wonders when LBK is going to post about that*

    I had a good day.
As you may know, I spent today in a medium-high security prison taking an Alternatives to Violence Program (AVP) workshop.
It went well, the style of learning is very well thought-out, it consists of “light and livelies” which are games like Simon Says and “big wind blows” basically a musical chairs variant, then exercises that are game-like but emphasize communication, problem-solving, co-operation, communication, good stuff like that.
The focus is on learning to change what could be violent and/or deadly confrontations into positive interactions with others, and it’s fascinating to see a bunch of inmates who most of society reviles come together and admit, shocked themselves, that they’re okay about talking and sharing their thoughts and feelings, some of the for the first time since they were incarcerated.
A lot of the guys are only a few years older than I am, I think J is 19, actually, just one year. We talked about school and our common struggles on focusing and self-discipline, making rash decisions and focusing on short term pleasure instead of sticking with things that’ll be better in the long run.
At the beginning of the day we were all kind of quiet and like “uh, what’s going on? I have no idea, I’m just going to stare at the ground and act invisible” and at the end we were all cutting up and joking around. To the extent that it was a little too rowdy and the facilitators had to yell to be heard, except C, whenever he says something the entire room falls silent because he’s amazing and you can’t help but have a ton of respect for the guy.

So yeah. That’s what I did today, and I’m going back tomorrow and Sunday. :)

Homecoming football game was today! We won! It was the only game we’ve won the entire season, because our football team really, really sucks!
I love being a roadie for the pep band. I hold the music for the flutes, bake cookies, and go on runs to the Snack Shack. I’m so indespensible. *hairflip* But we did manage to do some marching during halftime, which is pretty awesome.
I’m pretty sure the band is the most talented part of all of our football games, since our team is terrible, our cheerleaders are basically the worst cheerleaders I’ve ever seen, and none of the fans are really paying attention to the game.

I played at my homecoming on Friday ( band, obviously ) and it was raining and all of our fingers froze, but I had fun, and we played our Bon Jovi show at halftime and apparently sounded good even though it’s hard to play on cold instruments. Also, when we left after halftime, we were winning 35-0. Our football team is bad but the team we were playing was apparently much worse.

    Good things that happened yesterday:

I came in early to school and got to read a copy of The Guinness Book of World Records 1992 that one of the teachers had around. (Almost none of the space ones still stand!)

I did all of my Latin and English homework in school.

We got bagels in English class.

I learned how to use the lightmeter for my science project measuring light pollution. (And I learned what a foot-candle is!)

I saw my old friend Peggy.

I ate mashed potatoes and meat loaf with great sauce for dinner.

    It was Friday.

    Bad things that happened yesterday:

We had a presentation on fights in our school, which apparently have been breaking out quite a lot although I haven’t seen any. I wasn’t scared before, but I think I might be now.

    There was a storm.

My mom came home late from work, which put my dad in a bad mood.

So. I am sitting inside my amazing blanket fort…one of the first that I’ve built that’s actually stayed up. I even risked attaching things to the door…so I now have a sign that says ‘Please do not open door beyond four inches, and open it slowly!’ taped to it.

I managed to use most of my room…so any floor space that isn’t occupied by my bed or my desk is now covered in blankets, sheets and pillows. I was running around the house flat all day because I was so excited and hyper. Though my room isn’t *that* big, so the fort isn’t humongously huge or anything, but it’s still quite spacious, and cosy.

I’m going to use it to surprise my sister when she gets back on Tuesday (that’sthedayI’mgettingmynewviolincasesoexcitedsoexcited) from her week-long camp. And I’m thinking of having a sleepover in it with a few friends during fall break, if I’m allowed to leave it up for that long.

  139. Luna the Lovely says:

Okay….Maybe I’m just antisocial and easily irritated, but, really. Would someone please inform the male population that just because a girl is eating by herself in the caf, does not mean she wishes an unknown male to invite himself to her table, and subsequently strike up conversation with her. That guy a month ago, the really hyper somewhat overly friendly freshie on his 18th birthday was more than enough. Now it’s just becoming a pattern. A pattern I’m not particularly fond of, thanks. Although, this pattern would lend credence to Alan’s comment yesterday that there are probably plenty of guys besides him who think I’m cute, but that I’m just not outgoing enough to have met them (me’n’Alan have strange conversations, by the way).

but yeah. I was sitting at the caf, eating lunch, minding my own business, perfectly content to eat and run (I’ve got to study for physics). then out of nowhere, some guy comes and asks if he can sit with me, while there are well over a dozen completely empty tables to be found in the caf. It’s not like it was crowded and nowhere else to sit. But he invites himself to my table, anyway. Annoying and creepy much?

And then… “So, are you from around here?”
    Me: “No….”
Him: “I thought so….You sound different [uh, no, really? I have a cold, I sound terrible, that doesn’t mean I’m from elsewhere, though ] Where from?”
    Me: “alaska…”
Him: “Oh, really? I thought you might be foreign…”
    Me: “Uh, no.”
Him: “Well, from alaska, you almost might as well be, I mean, that’s really far away.”
    Me: “Uh….”
Him: “So, do you guys think of your self as american or canadian?”
Me: *thinking–what the cake? Talk about the newest most mental question I’ve been asked….* “Uhm, American….”
    Him: “All the way?”
Me: *again, thinking, wtc?* “Uh, yeah?”
    Him: Sarah palin?
Me: Uhm, she’s fine. Dunno that she had the experience for vp, but she was fine as governor [seriously, palin quetions are getting WAY old]
Him: *babbles about how VP requires no experience, all they do is judge tie breakers and try to get the president assassinated*
    Me: Uhm, okay…..

Yeah. And I was eating lunch in [name of one of the main cafs on campus], before heading to the library to study physics. The creeper seriously walked me all the freaking way over to the freaking library, at one point quizzing me on what cafs on campus I usually eat in. [my answer being that it depends on where my classes were….and he apparently eats in [caf in center of campus] alot, you can tell what caf I’m going to be eating at even less, not that I ever eat there anyway, except very rarely. I mean, seriously? creepy, much?]. And then when I made my escape into the library, he basically stated that he hopes to see me around, and that I should totally flag him down should I see him. Uh….what? No. Just no. go away. Not interested in grad student creepers, thanks. I mean, seriously, he’s a grad student, he asked me at one point if I was a freshman. Granted, I’m not a freshie, but seriously? Grad student & freshie? Creeper dude, much?

I mean, seriously, that’s at least the second guy, no scratch that, that’s the third guy who has invited himself to eat with me this semester. Aforementioned freshie at beginning of post invited himself over to my table, when it was evident that he’d already eaten half of his food (possibly while waiting in line for something at a different line in the caf, and not having vacated a table to invite himself to mine), but still. And that guy was just hyper and strange, and apparently it was his 18th birthday…..Then there was another guy a couple weeks ago, but in his instance, the caf was uber busy, I was almost done eating, and really he just wanted somewhere to sit, and wasn’t creepy at all. the grad student creeper today, I could see at least 6 empty tables from where I was seated,a lone, and he clearly didn’t pick up on the fact that I had no interest in chatting,a nd certainly had no interest in being walked from the caf a half a dozen blocks to the library. I would have considered ditching him to go back to my dorm, then going to the library (since my dorm is only a block from the caf, if even),b ut that would requrie disclosing where If reaking live to grad school creepr, which is so not happening.

Oh, on an un-annoying note, I also met a guy from AK today. I was standing in line to get swiped into plaza, wearing my AK grown sweatshirt, and trying to see what the menu said was being served today, when I hear “So…Are you from Alaska?” I turn to my left, where a guy’s just leaving the caf (I’m quite sure it’s the guy I saw in this same caf on Friday with an AK sweatshirt, who I was wondering if was from AK….). Me: “yes.” Him: “Where at?” Me: “[name of my town]” Him: “I’m from Juneau.” Me: “Sweet” Him: “So, why’d you come here?” Me: Prevet. You? Him: Engineering. [I swear, this totally made me recall the fact that I crossed this emblem by the engineering building, that according to campus tradition, makes you fated to marry an engineer.]

And that conversation was fine and normal, not creepy. Not like grad school creeper dude. I mean, really, there’s a difference between being friendly, and being TOO friendly. Like asking me if I’ve got friends here, and t hen when I say that yes, I’ve got some friends, asking me if they were busy and that’s why I was eating alone? Dude, I’ve got friends, that doesn’t mean I always eat with said friends. Stop being creepy and go away.

    ;dsjfldskhglds;akfjdslk;g;hsldkj

I mean, really, why are so many people inviting themselves to eat with me this year, when they never have before? I don’t think I ever had anybody, except the occasional girl when the caf was slammed and there were literally NO empty tables, ever ask to sit with me. And now there’s been two guys who have invited themselves to sit up me, not because the caf was busy, but tostrike up overly friendly conversation. I mean, c’mon, peoples, seriously. Enough. i might get it if I was some uber-hot girl that all the guys drooled over, but I’m not, and I’m definitely not interested in the unwanted attention. Just, enough. Please.

I feel like I haven’t had a just-for-the-heck-of-it post in awhile, have I? Well, going to fix that right now…

First of all, I HATE STINKBUGS. They are the most annoying creatures on Earth. If you kill one (Or even, oh, say, accidentally smush one with your finger…yes, it’s happened!) THEY STINK. This is no exaggeration > they really do have this distinct, disgusting odor about them, and they’re everywhere. In my house, at my school, blegh. Just blegh. Today we found a couple of dead ones in my friend’s desk, which was nasty. Normally I’m ok with insects, as in, I can tolerate them, but enough is enough… Does anybody else have stinkbugs? It’s probably a regional thing…

Socially-or-whatever wise I am SO happy this year with my friends. Yes, I am quite literally over the moon…my friends are amazing. Last year was horrible, but this year is making up for it day by day. We never stop laughing. Even though I don’t think my teachers are as good as they were last year, there has got to be at least one really great memorable moment per day. Plus everybody seems to be in a much more “live life, oh WHO CARES” kind of mindset, which is just so…freeing. Yes, there will always be those little annoying people that constantly crawl up your back and try to bite you, but (most) of my friends and I are really done with it and just want to have fun and enjoy our last year together. They are crazy, and they’re not afraid to be nerdy, and I think that’s making the difference because instead of, “Ohmygosh, she’s so gross she’s wearing all black,” we’re just like “That’s cool! You’re a ninja!” or something awesome.
I really don’t think I’ve had friends that I can feel I can be myself around this much as I have had this year. I just feel so darn lucky, it’s like, why do I deserve it?
For example: (sorry, ranting about my friends a lot aren’t I…) One of my best friends and I walked around school the other day after Latin cracking people up because we were doing a play that involved a bunch of witches’ hats (long story), so we were pretending that they were the Sorting Hat and assigning people to Houses. My cheeks hurt from laughing afterwards.

Moving along…School is ok right now. I have all A’s and B’s, but hoping to bring most of the B’s (Some B+’s) up to A’s so I can make First Honors by the end of the trimester, but we’ll see. Science is actually a lot harder this year than last year, since we’re doing Physics, but the labs are pretty interesting.

So that’s pretty much it for now…hope everyone’s having good school-lives too! :D

It’s like the Witch-King saying, “No man can kill me.” As he found out, lots of other things can defeat him, like women and hobbits.

Speaking of that, there is a LOTR/Buffy crossover at our library.

GAPAs, I realize this is a library catalog, but it’s not my local library, it’s the Indiana State Library via Evergreen, so I hope it’s okay.

I just got back from Hong Kong. It was awesome! Kind of like Singapore, but bigger and better. Actually, it seems like Singapore tried to copy a lot of the finer points of Hong Kong. Almost like the Singapore government is run by fifth-graders who tried to build a diorama of Hong Kong but got bored halfway through and never bothered to add the interesting stuff.

Hong Kong has an awesome transit system, friendly people, a neat history, and THE WORLD’S BEST FOOD. It doesn’t get any better than Xiao Long Bao. The ones at the food court here, which I always adored, pale in comparison; small, hard, doughy lumps with bland paste and a bit of pre-mixed chicken sauce in them.

The government there is something that interests me. Hong Kong was given over by the British to China in 1997. The PRC, wisely, left it pretty much alone. There’s a 50% PRC Communist Party Member presence in the statehouse there, but they’re mostly for show. Most decisions are made by the independent party there. You don’t even need a visa to get in. And Hong Kong is doing a whole lot better than the rest of China in terms of wealth, morale, and education.

    I love it!

And SFTDP, but China is supposed to let us handle all of our own affairs except national defense and diplomatic relations, however, it’s true that the government is pretty pro-Beijing. I mean, the chief executive is elected by a committee of pro-Chinese business executives and such.

I always found it slightly ironic that in 1997 during the Handover, what many called the world’s most capitalist city was about to be given back to the largest communist/socialist country in the world.

    I love Hong Kong too! (Well, I would, wouldn’t I? ;) )
