Washington, D.C., Kokonvention

Robert says:

I’ve had a request by e-mail for a more organized and, well, educational program for a D.C. Kokonvention. So far, all I’d been planning to do was a quickish tour of my magazine (Science). But I can add other things if there’s a demand for them. I have other science-writer friends who can give tours, and of course there are loads of museums and things in Washington. I’d need a bit of advance notice, though, and it probably wouldn’t be worth planning anything for a group of fewer than four people.

So assuming something is going to happen this summer, when will it happen, and who is likely to be there?

So it goes, I guess. Eat lots of pie without me, ‘kay?

I think I might actually be going to DC late this summer, though, so if it’s in early August I might be able to make it. Maybe.

    How early is early?

Washingtonians know that you’d have to be crazy to come here in August. That makes it the perfect month for a Kokonvention, I’d say.

Taiwan Hippo Fan and I can come, but it depends on when it is. We live about 4 hours from D.C. We are going to be gone in June and most of July, but August would be GREAT! My uncle and aunt work in the United States Foreign Service Department (in the embassy), but they’re moving to Croatia at the end of the summer so they probably won’t be up for giving too many tours. But there are some really great museums we could go to. Robert is probably the best at suggesting museums, because he lives there, and I’ve only been there twice.

  14. Elizabeth says:

I can’t go , I don’t think. But it’s a cool idea, and I was just in DC, it’s an awesome place except for the sidewalks…they put bricks over the roots and everything so when you walk you have to always stare at the ground so you don’t trip over the mini hills, and I want to be looking up at everything there is to see…
oh well, If there are people interested in a cheep place to stay, the William Penn House is pretty cheep and comfortable and it’s directly in town, but it’s for quakers mostly and there are 10 people to a room, but that’s where I’d go if (when) I ever go back.
also, Robert, though you might already know this, it’s easy to get Capitol tours if you go to the Longworth office building and find your representative’s office and ask for a tour, I don’t know how you’d do it with people from all over, but I was told it’s easy because giving tours is one of the things the interns do. I was also told that the Library of Congress is very elaborate and pretty, aside from having every single book ever printed in the US. I really wanted to go there, but we didn’t have time :(

  15. Purple Panda says:

11 – really? That’s so cool! My uncle has been to Turkmenistan and Mexico, and my aunt has been to about a zillion places, because she has been in it much longer. But most recently she’s been in Armenia. My cousins (who are my age) can speak about a dozen languages, and were born all over the globe! My mom got into the Foreign Service (mostly to see if she could actually get in, also as another career option), but she decided not to join because my dad can’t work for the government (he didn’t register in case of a draft, or whatever you have to do, so he’s not allowed), and she likes her current job (voice teacher). I think my aunt learned Arabic as well, but I’m not positive. I’ll have to ask her. Maybe you know her…(probably not, but it’s possible!) My brother learned Arabic last year. He’s 7, and there was a boy who came to Pittsburgh from Iraq to have surgery, and my family really helped out with him, etc., and the boy only spoke Arabic. My brother, who was really young and was like a language sponge, just picked up the language and could speak it! I don’t know if he can anymore, but he could communicate with the boy, and it was really cool.

Oh, I didn’t mean that. I just don’t know that it’s good for throwing, not having tried it for that purpose. Besides, it’s sold by the slice, which diminishes its throw-worthiness. I could probably bake some perfectly adequate throwing pies at home.

We should all totally throw pies. Either that, or just put a bunch of whipped cream in a pie tin and throw it…it’s much cheaper. But it doesn’t get the same effect…

    (37) – The 10th works for us (I’m 99% sure)! And educational stuff sounds awesome. I also think, that when we get together, everyone should either write, or find an article about something they’re interested in, and we can compile them to make a mini-muse!

  47. Capricious's Mom (adult) says:

This is what I think, my daughter doesn’t necessarily agree with me, but these are my opinions:

There are things that sometimes seem like a great idea but then you dig a little deeper and think maybe it isn’t so great to actually do.
    Think about this…
    – One of the best things about this forum is that you don’t know much about each other. I know this is what you want to change, but really? In real life, you probably won’t like each other as much as you do on the forum. Here you focus on one thing you have in common and nothing else matters. It may be hard to believe, but if you think about some of the people you really don’t like, there is probably at least one topic that you could have fun discussing if you could block everything else out.
    – If some of you meet, others are left out and that would change the tone of your chats. It is nice that you are all on equal footing – no elite groups.
    – Gapa has no guarantee. We could say we are going to show up, and really mean it, but what if only one person shows? All the parents could email gapa and say we’ll be there, but things come up, at the last minute we change our minds, etc. You MBers would show, but you know how parents can be.
    – Gapa is taking on a lot of risk. There is the issue of liability. If we get together and someone gets hurt, parents could sue the gapa. By arranging tours, etc, he could be seen as the organizer, which is risky. The only way to avoid that risk is to get a lawyer to write up a waiver and get the parents to sign. Lawyers are expensive – so parents would have to chip in. How much? I don’t know. I don’t really know much about this – Gapa probably knows more than I – but it is something to think about.
Obviously, I’m trying to talk you out of this. I would love Capricious to meet a real Science Writer because this would be a good career option. But it would be super nice to relax and go about our usual summer plans – and you guys pick a new topic.

I think your mother deserves major Mom points just for considering it at all. It’s a crazy, quixotic thing to do. She sounds like my mother.

Rosanne told me not to tell you this, but one argument in favor of August 10 is that she’ll be in town then. She’ll be gone by the 15th. Rebecca and I are available for either date.

Mainly we want you to have a good time and be safe. The easiest thing for us GAPAs would be to stay far away from the whole business. But that wouldn’t be much fun.

And I don’t see how the parents could sue the GAPAs…first of all, why would one of them do that?, and second of all, just because they are in charge of the website doesn’t mean they would be responsible for something that happened to the members? It just doesn’t make any sense. I’ll talk to my dad about it…he’s a lawyer. And if we did need a waiver, he would probably love to do it for free.

There are tons of museums in DC, it just depends on what you want to do. The American History museum is being renovated, and there is stuff from there at hte Air and Space museum and other places. I always like the Natural History museum, but that’s just me.

    Adult (ages 12-64) $16
Seniors (65+), Active Duty Military & Intel Community $15
    Child (ages 5-11) $13
Children age 4 and under FREE

The national spelling bee is only on TV starting at round 5, so by then about 5/6 of the kids will have been eliminated, so don’t count on me being there.

  136. emmatheduck says:

136-Wow. Someone WANTS to hear me rant?

Well, for one thing, the whole format of the bees s completely wrong. She had four bees, going from school to national with two other levels in between, though I don’t remember specifically what they were called in the movie. In real life it is 4 levels in some places, but only 3 in some, and I know that it’s only 3 in L.A. Also, no matter where you live, only ONE person moves on from each bee to the next level. This goes for every place, and every level of the bee. In the movie, there were like 10 people moving on from one of the levels.
The timeling was also messed up, because she saw the nationals on TV like a week before she had her school bee, and then she had a summer at some point in between bees. In reality bee season is only a few months, beginning with school bees in January or February, then local bees are ganerally around March and nationals are end of May or beginning of June. there is no summer in there.
Also, it said that they were the first co-champions ever, though really there have been cochampions three times before in 1950, 1957, and 1962.
Also, the word xanthosis was the 1995 winning word, so I doubt it would be used again in the national bee so soon. They do definitely reuse words, but probably not winning words because they get so much publicity.
I think there’s more, but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

We’re still working on a list of events for each. Right now, the main difference is the August 10 will have three GAPAs presiding (Rosanne, Robert, and Rebecca), whereas August 15 will have just two (no Rosanne, alas).
