  3. Radiant_Darkness,

Even if this game doesn’t resume, it has been instructive so far. Crank it back to just after White’s sixth move. You could have played Nxg4 (i.e., your knight on f6 takes White’s pawn on g4). Do you see why White can’t take your knight?

  6. Sudo and Radiant_Darkness:

Is this game still in progress? If not, there’s an instructive comment I’d like to make about Black’s 13th move.

I want it to be still in progress. But that doesn’t mean it is.

      • Oh, well, then, lesson time. There’s an old chess saying: “Look for a check; it may be mate.” That doesn’t mean you should always play the check, just that it’s worth considering before you play something else. The king is your ultimate quarry, after all.

Now, if you crank the position back before your 13th move, you’ll find that you have five possible checks. At least two of them are no good. But some of the others might be.

(Conversely, it’s also worthwhile to be sure you can defend yourself against any checks your opponent might have up ens sleeve.)
