  1. To start with, here’s the long-promised sea shanty from Midnight Fiddler. This is one of my favorite shanties. At Fiddler’s suggestion, we all sang it at the end of a very pleasant Kokonvention with Lady Bunniful and Midnight Fiddler and her parents at Red-tailed HAWK’s house.

(Sorry that this took so long, Fiddler. Your MP3 file was too big for me to upload, so I had to compress it.)

This is making me want to take the dulcimer down from the mantel…

Yes, I play the dulcimer–the plucked dulcimer, to be specific. Not very well, but I do play. I would play more if I had sheet music for something I particularly like. I have access to some Christmas carols, folk songs, and hymns. They’re fine, but they don’t give me a lot of range, and some of them are downright depressing. I wonder if I can find Queen songs for the dulcimer, or something of that ilk. The closest that I have found is “Songs of The Beatles for the Dulcimer”, which isn’t what I want. The Beatles bore me. (Please, please, don’t start yelling at me. I respect The Beatles. I do. I just happen to find most of their songs repetitious, depressing, or both.)

In case you are unfamiliar with the dulcimer and are wondering why sheet music is hard to find, I will explain some: The dulcimer is a string instrument with sixteen frets, numbered zero through fifteen. Traditional sheet music for the instrument will read something like: 0…14…3…7, not as typical note symbols. Some people can look at “universal note” sheet music and translate that into the “Language of the Dulcimer”, but I can’t, so I have to use sheet music intended for use with the dulcimer. It isn’t a very common instrument, so it’s hard to find music at all, let alone zippy music.

1.3 (Cyrulean)~ Thank you! I have a long-abandoned dulcimer as well. I generally just play tunes by ear, and simple ones at that. I have a friend who is basically the God of the lap dulcimer, which is rather intimidating.
I have a book of dulcimer tab somewhere. Thing is, I read normal music, and tab is confusing to me, alas.

7 (Axa)~ I’m not sure how legal it is to drive listening to music through earbuds, but I do it because I haven’t a radio or CD player or anything in my car because my car is a ’92 POS that’s been cannibalized probably more than once in its life. Generally in such cases I just put the iPod on shuffle and skip things if I’m not in the mood. Basically driving doesn’t affect my music-listening habits. Stuff with lyrics are good though because then I can sing along with is either good because it gives me something to do or bad because then I think about singing instead of driving.

At the camp I used to go to, there was an amazing pianist (who happened to be blind, although that’s somewhat irrelevant). Every night we’d have something called Campfire, which was when the whole camp would go to the Lodge and someone would read stories, or counselors would do skits, or we’d have multicultural presentations or the camp play or a magic show. It was a togetherness moment to end the day. Then the pianist would start playing Sheep May Safely Graze and we’d all quietly walk back to our cabins, preserving the music in the silence.

If I were to have the opportunity to play that piece, I would probably not be able to make it through without crying. It’s such a significant memory from my childhood.

    19 – That’s a cool idea.

I’ve been listening to a lot of band music recently, meaning pieces written for a wind band + percussion. It’s a little bit like classical music, because it’s all instrumental, but at the same time it has a really different texture due to the instrumentation and modern time of composition.

“Equus” and “October” by Eric Whitacre
    “Hebrides Suite” by Clare Grundman
“Hounds of Spring” by Alfred Reed
    “Mannin Veen” by Haydn Wood*
“Blue Shades” and “An American Elegy” by Frank Ticheli
“Molly on the Shore” by Percy Grainger
“In the Spring, at a Time when Kings Go off to War” by David Holsinger
    “Slava” by Bernstein
“Short Ride on a Fast Machine” by John Adams
“Exultate” and “Ride” by Sam Hazo.

I can’t remember what part “Alla Breve” is. Is it the part that sounds a little bit like “Tis A Gift To Be Simple?” That part is great. Also, the whole thing is great, actually. My entire grade in band adores that piece. We are without a doubt going to vote it our Senior Song next year. Do you have the organ part at the end covered?

October is another piece of sheer musical brilliance. I really want to play it. My friend Adam (the one who was helping me out with all the music theory/transposition stuff on the MuseBlog Music Project thread) has gotten to play it twice, the lucky clarinet (once at a camp and once at all-district). I think our school played it a couple of years ago, too, while I was still in middle school. There are a couple of beautiful oboe solos that I would give anything to play. Eric Whitacre is an absolute genius. (We played Equus last year.)

I think I’ve actually heard a few movements of Lincolnshire Posy before. When I was sick a couple of weeks ago, I spent most of the day on the concertbandland channel of Youtube, and I think I stumbled across it. It’s beautiful; I’m listening to it again now.

            • Enceladus says:

Alla Breve is the transition from the first part to the faster paced second part. It’s essentially a clarinet soli in cut time, going up and down. (Right before the Gift To Be Simple part.)

Unfortunately for us, we have no organ, or even oboes! So our oboe solos are played by flutes, clarinets, or a college student.

I’ve sung and played Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque. It’s so beautiful!

We played movements 1,2, and 6 of Lincolnshire Posy at a band/orchestra camp I went to over the summer. It’s really hard. (Doesn’t 2 sound a bit like the beginning of Mannin Veen?)

I now know exactly which part you’re talking about. :) Our clarinet section was pretty awesome there too.

The oboe solos in Mannin Veen… Ugh. I only started last year, and there were only two of us. YY never practiced oboe, because his primary instrument was clarinet. By the second semester chair test I beat him, but I let him stay first chair because I was two years younger and had been playing for only a few months. Then he proceded to screw up the Mannin Veen one-measure solos every. single. time. until the actual concert (at which point I was crossing my fingers tightly). I couldn’t have done it either but at least I would have practiced it!

The second movement of the Hebrides Suite sounds a little bit like Mannin Veen too.

does anyone have thoughts on the grammys? i don’t understand how they make their nominations. or rather, i can’t take them seriously because of how they seem to come about :/ mumford and sons was definitely only on because little lion man got popular, but if it hadn’t they would still be just as talented as a band. how do they quantify these things? and i enjoy some of katy perry’s music when i’m in the car with friends but a nomination for best album? really? on what grounds, people know who she is?
i know that awards shows are usually shams anyways, but with the academy awards the nominations have a BASIS in talent and are then influenced by money/campaigns. here it just seems like “let’s pick the highest grossing albums and that’s that”

also the fact that mumford and sons (and florence + the machine) are listed under new artist is annoying to me, since they’ve both been active since 2007. MAYBE IF I READ THE ACTUAL REQUIREMENTS i would feel better, but it seems like “oh now they are popular” so they get the nomination. RAGE.

i’m glad arcade fire won for album of the year because at least they actually MAKE their own music. i’m not trying to bash pop music and cry sparkling indie tears, because i recognize the talent and work it takes gaga or katy perry to do what they do and i respect that but SERIOUSLY, TEENAGE DREAM GOT A NOMINATION?

36 (Robert)~ Very much so, even when they’re well put together. Their biggest fault in my mind is that many artists change, and each of their CDs have completely different feels, sometimes it’s subtle, other times it’s very pronounced. A best of album doesn’t capture that very well. It can show you the range, but not the subtleties within the range.

I just rediscovered/looked up the music of a girl who’s the daughter of the lady who sat next to me in choir last night. If you followed that, congratulations. Anyway, the daughter sang with the choir for one or two concerts. She got a solo on one of the songs (one of my favorites) and didn’t get it right (it was a super easy rhythm thing that she consistently screwed up) until the night of the performance. The ONLY time she sang it correctly was in the concert, which was good, but extremely annoying to me.
Meh. Anyway, I’d heard that she had her own band and CDs out and whatnot. (Makes sense, as her dad’s in the recording business.) So I looked her up awhile ago and wasn’t terribly impressed. She’s a fair banjo player and had good musicians around her, and her songwriting was good I suppose, but her singing is rather scary, even for old time/bluegrass.
So or whatever reason was led to look her up again today, listened to some music, had somewhat more compassion this time, but I’m still not terribly impressed.
What I am impressed with (and very envious of, not going to lie) is that she’s gone out and done it anyway. She has several CDs out, she plays locally and has gone on tour, has people listening to her music and is generally doing what I only wish I could.
Kind of the same with a friend of a friend’s (who I stumbled upon accidentally, actually) who’s actually a really good singer/songwriter/overall musician, but she’s out there doing what she wants to do. And then Intern, he’s a completely fantastic musician who plays open mics and gigs and everything.

I wish I could do that. I love playing music, and I really wish I had people to play with, but I can’t seem to find anyone. I suppose I could try to make connections in [nearby town that aforementioned girl is from], because they have a pretty thriving folk music scene. I could be oblivious to the whole “everyone’s welcome to join our jam sessions….as long as you’re in our crowd already” kind of mentality at the general store and try to get in there. I get hired to play 18th century fiddle tunes at people for events sometimes, which is nice, but mostly I just end up playing by myself in my room, sometimes along with CDs to pretend like I have someone else there.
I also sometimes wonder if I’m just not good enough to warrant any attention for my playing/singing.
Oh well. Hopefully it’ll change when I get to college? More people and all that. And at both places I’m applying there seems to be a fair amount of music, one of them has a music program every Friday where there are no classes scheduled and you can just go listen to other students perform, or you can perform whatever. All levels are welcome, and from what I understand you don’t have to even be studying music to play, which is cool. At the other college (my first choice) there are weekly contra dances, and I’m willing to bet there’s a fair amount of Appalachian, folk, old time, bluegrass, you name it there. So I guess that’s promising.

I also need to learn how to improvise more when playing with other people. *sigh*

44.1 (Robert)~ Yes I know, but a big part of my problem is I can’t seem to find a way to do them, as much as I want to. I’m sure that I could learn how to improvise and play with better with others if I just did it, but it’s the getting to do it that’s the problem in the first place.

    • You’ll probably join or form a group in college. Performing regularly in front of others is a huge motivator, in several ways. And depending on where you go to school, there may be some good festivals nearby.

Rebecca & Robert~ Thanks guys. *hugs and choklit* I actually got a call from one of the professors at the college (from the history dept., but he also plays music) and he mentioned that there’s a lot of music there, with a lot of folk, old time and bluegrass. My despair was premature, apparently.

    P.S.
Yesterday when aforementioned professor called I was on the way to choir rehearsal, so I called him back today and we had a rather more in-depth conversation about history and why it’s the best and music and why it’s the best, and that anthropology is also the best.
Anyway, the music minor there is really strong and good and they actually have a minor in “traditional music” which is all the kinds of music I want to do. EEEE!
Basically it sounds kind of like an extended Country Dance and Song Society camp only for college credit and also with other cool stuff happening. OH EM GEE.

And to make this kind of more relevant to what we usually talk about on this thread….I’ve been listening to Johnny Cash lately and have decided that I need to get more of his music because he is awesome. I’ve always known this, I’ve just decided that action needs to be taken.
I also have a stack of Dad’s CDs that I stole the other day that I need to put into iTunes. Woody Guthrie, K.D. Lang, Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi…..

Anyone else here know of Joanna Newsom? I’m not very familiar with her music, but I’ve heard some of her songs. A friend of mine really likes her. She’s got a very interesting voice, I find it both captivating and very hard to listen to.

I think i’ve figured out why I love listening to Japanese/Spanish(sorta)/Russian/Greek/other-language-I-don’t-understand music. When you listen to music in a language you know, the meaning of the lyrics has an impact on how you perceive the song. When it’s a language you don’t know or one you have to really work to understand, the lyrics just become part of the music. You can’t judge it on the lyrics, just the music and how they fit together.

And also, yes. For part of a history report, we had to find four artists from the country we researched; I discovered Farhad Darya, an Afghan singer and peace activist. I’ve been listening to his music a lot lately; he incorporates a lot of traditional Afghan style into his music, and that’s something I just haven’t heard a whole lot of. It’s refreshing.
Plus, you’re right–the fact that I don’t understand the lyrics makes them a collection of sounds, instead of something with a specific meaning, and I can appreciate it as such without the distraction of a set message.

I’ve mentioned them several times on MB, but I’ve been listening to a lot of Fleet Foxes lately. They’re a folk band from Seattle. They have some interesting vocal harmonizations, and their lyrics actually make you think, which is a refreshing change from most other music. Even though I’ve been listening to their albums on repeat nearly non-stop for a week or so, I haven’t gotten tired of them yet.

Bon Iver’s pretty good too (indie/folk), and Animal Collective (which Wikipedia lists as neo-psychadelia/experimental rock (it’s complicated)), and Schneider TM (indie/electronica), and Manu Chao (mainly reggae-ish).

    FLOGGING MOLLY

worst concert experience i’ve ever had, but the show definitely made up for it

we basically stood out there in the outdoor venue for hours on end in the pouring rain (and apparently a severe thunderstorm warning) waiting for it to let up. and then once it did, the opener (clutch) went on and freaking on. apparently they’re also big-ish but i was not impressed. certainly not enough to forgive them running offstage as soon as it started sprinkling again about ten minutes later.

fortunately flogging molly were awesome and gave no pies about the noise laws (which say concerts are supposed to end by 11) so they went until around midnight. somebody will probably be fined which is unfortunate but it was an absolutely fantastic show

i did not go in the actual push-everyone-around-like-crazy-people-circle (it was behind me) because there was significantly more alcohol and general fighting shenanigans than you see at, say, metal shows (have i mentioned how freaking NICE metalheads are?) BUT i did mosh and i was front and center in the pit the whole time and it was glorious. jaw is extremely sore and i probably have a slight bruise or two on my back but other than that i am extremely injury-free which is nice

also easily the most moving moment of the show came during one of the talking bits. so for those of you who aren’t aware there is a big rivalry between ohio state and the university of michigan that a LOT of people in columbus take way, way too seriously. so they were having a talking bit and he was like “we were in detroit, michigan” and some people started booing, and he went “HEY! ya never boo people when t’ey’re down, ya give ’em a hand and help ’em get back up” (APOLOGIES FOR BAD ATTEMPT AT DIALECT BUT DUDES HE WAS SUPER IRISH) i was so happy he said that, everyone who had been booing just looked so (rightly) ashamed, i cheered super loudly for that and one guy gave me a weird look but pffft.

…also that bit where they played that really fast song with the fiddle OH WAIT THAT’S ALL OF IT IT WAS GLORIOUS

anyway. i need sleeps, i slept badly last night (last few nights, actually), had terrible cramps all morning, stood in the rain for hours, saw the show, then walked (across downtown in the middle of the night, ps that’s probably a bad idea kids) to the ohio theater where they were showing fight club which is where my brother and another friend had gone after they bailed (i had other friends there so it was all good) and watched the last bit of the movie before getting a ride home

basically the whole evening was spent running on straight-up adrenaline, first from the concert, and then from the “OH GOD IT IS THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT I AM DOWNTOWN MY PHONE IS DEAD I HAVE NO MONEY I REALLY HOPE MY BROTHER IS AT THIS MOVIE LIKE HE SAID HE’D BE OR LIFE WILL BE BAD” panic

I like their music, some songs other than others, but… does it annoy anyone else, this take-the-same-tune, change-the-lyrics-and-the-language, and-call-it-a-new-song thing which apparently enables you to only have to think up half as many song arrangements as you would have to otherwise? It was okay with Boten Anna/Now You’re Gone, but I just discovered that there’s another version of DotA with English lyrics, All I Ever Wanted. It doesn’t even work that well with the meter, and in my mind DotA is way too iconic to suffer a lyrics rewrite on a completely different topic. Do all the Swedish songs about gaming and internetz that they write become English songs about love at one point? How does that even work? >.<

In the context of the lyrics, it doesn’t make sense, but listen to it (6 minutes and 53 seconds into the song).

Tell me what you’re looking for
    Tell me what you’ve lost
Talk about the things you’ve kept
And of the things you’ve tossed

    Chorus:
Enjoy your drink, it could be your last
Stay up, wake up, break your fast
    But hurry it up
    I haven’t got all day

    Do you believe in miracles
    Tell me if it’s true
If Moses parted the Red Sea
    Then Hitler saved the Jews

I can tell you what your future holds
If you’ll only stay a while
I can tell you if you’re doomed to die
Or if you’ll live to raise a child

23(Tesseract)- I LOVE Sam Hazo’s stuff! We played “Ascend” at All-County and I’ve had it stuck in my head ever since.

I’m so jealous! We’ve never played anything by Hazo. Our last concert had October and a Ticheli piece though, so that was cool.

We played Blue Shades by Ticheli in one group I’m with! It was soooooo hard.

Next season we’re playing the Hindemith Symphony in Bb which is absolutely insane and atonal, as well as the Ives Symphony 1, and Copland’s Outdoor Overture. And some other stuff that’s also pretty cool.

Yes, “Ascend” is great. It’s got tons of syncopation.
Oh yeah, Ticheli’s awesome, too. We’re playing “Cajun Folk Songs” in band right now, and the trombones get to use straight mutes. (Which almost makes up for the fact that he gives all the fun parts to the first trombone. We second and thirds are offended!) :)
Enc- Oh, I love atonal stuff! We almost played ‘Old Churches’, but our flute section gave up.

Oh wow, we’re playing Old Churches this year with a hyperflamablamablous flute section.

Tess- I think the reason is that I had a super great audition and got into the top youth ensemble at the conservatory.

          Reccomendation from music I’ve played-
“Music For the Funeral of Queen Mary” AS ARRANGED BY STEVEN STUCKY (the arrangement is very important- it’s originally 1600’s hymns that have been… altered.)

Oh, and in other news, it seems that ’tis the season to be Grieg- in two completely unrelated groups, we’re playing his Funeral March and his Symphonic Dances (both of which are WONDERFUL look them up RIGHT NOW)

Enc, you get to play amazing stuff!

The piece we played was Vesuvius. We didn’t pull it off too well but it was still great. Right now we have Variations on a Korean Folk Song, Morning Noon and Night in Vienna, and Whatsoever Things. My favorite piece is still Mannin Veen.

PLEASE JUST GIVE US THAT MUSIC PLEASE.
I’m in Chamber Choir at the middle school I go to, and the teacher who directs it showed us one of the song we’re going to be singing for the Spring Choral Concert. It’s an arrangement of Imogen Heap’s Hide And Seek (I think it’s done by the King’s Singers), and it’s like torture waiting for it.

Adele! Quickly! Sing some more and top the charts again so people can see that you don’t need to hide your voice behind auto-tune and overproduction to be popular!

Yesterday I saw Itzhak Perlman perform with the Rochester Philharmonic at the Eastman School of Music.
Then a few hours later I saw Anamanaguchi in this tiny venue called the Bug Jar.

Two incredibly different concert experiences, but both were awesome. I’m not sure I can even compare.

Funny, because I tried that the other day, and I kept trying to sing all the songs, so I would start accidentally writing down the words to the village green preservation society instead of my history notes…

Well, I’m not the world’s most mathematical guy
But when she showed me trig she nearly broke my sine
      Oh my Zero, Z-Z-Zero…

So a while ago, I stumbled across this BBC radio play of the HG2G (which by the way is completely AMAZING and the voice for Marvin is just the best thing ever) and it has this intro music that sounded like it was written just for Douglas Adams. It was bouncy and almost goofy sounding but also sort of futuristic and hollow, and it was simply the most Douglass Adamsish music I have ever heard, and I had been trying to figure out what it was for a really long time. It turns out that it’s the middle section of Journey of the Sorcerer by the Eagles, whic turns out to be an even better song than I thought. Just go listen to it, and think of the HG2G. It is AWESOME.

You realize that Hitchhiker’s started out as a radio show and the novels came later, right? Adams personally chose that music for the show, so it makes sense that it would seem fitting for him.
