‘What Have You Learned?’, by Carbon Leaf. Also known as the smartest breakup song ever. Has an interesting rolling chorus composition… Something like two verses, depending upon how you divide it. It’s hard to separate. Super catchy. I could see it turned into a jam session very easily. Anyway:

‘What have you learned, can you remember?
What would you like for me to do?
Everything you need from me is in your hands, and
Everything else is up to you.

You’re like a butterfly on a windy day-
You use directions in a roundabout way.

    What have you learned?
Now that you’ve been burned by the guy
Who used to be the centre of your eye
And you’re blown away by your own hurricane
    And you wonder why…

Castaway and you’re looking through the wreckage for your pride
But you can’t salvage what you don’t supply.

    What have you learned?
Now that you’ve been burned by the girl
Who used to be the centre of your world
Who used to be your centre of gravity
    And now you’re so unsure…

You’re like a squirrel out in the middle of the road-
You’re halfway there, but don’t know which way to go.

    What have you learned?
Now that you’ve been burned by the one
Who used to be the one and only
If you could see your sinking dignity…

You’re like the waves beating on the sandy shore-
You swear you’ve been there once or twice before.

    What have you learned?
    What have you learned?
    What have you learned?

What have you learned, can you remember?
Now that they don’t know what to do?
Now that they miss your heart of gold so badly-
This is what I’d say if I were you.

It’s in a treasure chest; it’s buried in the sand
But the x does not mark the spot, and I do not need a hand
And if I burst out into flames without your guidance anymore
Just scatter me across the sea, and you can kiss my ashes from the shore…

    Na na na na…
Na na na na na na…
    Na na na na…
    Na na na na na…
    Na na na na…
Na na na na na na…
    Na na na na…
    Na na na na na…
    Na na na na…
Na na na na na na…
    Na na na na…
    Na na na na na…
    Na na na na…
Na na na na na na…
    Na na na na…
    Na na na na na…’

Break up songs? I prefer Seventy Times Seven, by Brand New. It works for ex-friends or ex-girlfriends/boyfriends.

Back in school they never taught us
    what we needed to know
Like how to deal with despair
    or someone breakin your heart
For twelve years I’ve held it all together
but a night like this is beggin to pull me apart
I played it quiet left you deep in conversation
I felt uncool and hung out around the kitchen
    I remember I kept thinking
that I know you never would
And now I know I want to kill you
like only a best friend could

Everyone’s caught on to everything you do
    Everyone’s caught on to…

As if it happening wasn’t enough
I got to go and write a song
just to remind myself how bad it sucked
Ignore the sun, covers over my head
Wrote a message on my pillow that says
    “Jesse, stay asleep in bed”
Don’t apologize (I hope you choke and die!)
Search your cell for something which to hang yourself
They say you need to pray
if you want to go to heaven
But they don’t tell you what to say
when your whole life has gone to Hell!

Everyone’s caught on to everything you do
    Everyone’s caught on to…
    Everyone’s caught on to
(and I can’t let you let me down again)
    everything you do
    Everyone’s caught on to…
(and I can’t let you let me down again)

So is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with
Cause I’ve seen more spine in jellyfish
I’ve seen more guts on eleven-year-old kids
Have another drink and drive yourself home
I hope there’s ice on all the roads
And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt
and again when your head goes through the windshield

Is that what you call tact?
You’re as subtle as a brick in the small of my back
So let’s end this call and end this conversation
And is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with
Cause you left the frays from the ties you severed
when you say “best friends” means friends forever

Is that what you call a getaway?!!
Tell me what you got away with!!
Cause I’ve seen more spine in jellyfish!!
I’ve seen more guts on eleven-year-old kids!!
Have another drink and drive yourself home!!
I hope there’s ice on all the roads!!
And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt
and again when your head goes through the windshield!!

(I can’t let you let me down again)
Everyone’s caught on to everything you do
(and I can’t let you let me down again)
    Everyone’s caught on to…
(I can’t let you let me down again)
Everyone’s caught on to everything you do
(and I can’t let you let me down again)
    Everyone’s caught on to…

Since we’re talking about breakup songs… What Have You Learned? may be the smartest, but this… I think this is probably the most emotional, if you’re in a situation in which you’re still in love and they’re not.

‘Something always brings me back to you…
    It never takes too long.
No matter what I say or do-
I still feel you here ’til the moment I’m gone.

    You hold me without touch;
    Keep me without chains.
I never wanted anything so much
Than to drown in your love and not feel your rain…

    Set me free;
    Leave me be.
I don’t wanna fall another moment into your gravity…
    Here I am,
    and I stand
So tall- just the way I’m supposed to be.
But you’re onto me… And all over me.

You loved me ’cause I’m fragile-
When I thought that I was strong.
But you touch me for a little while-
And all my fragile strength is gone…

    Set me free;
    Leave me be.
I don’t wanna fall another moment into your gravity…
    Here I am,
    and I stand
So tall- just the way I’m supposed to be.
But you’re onto me… And all over me.

I live here on my knees as I
Try to make you see that you’re
    Everything I think I need,
    Here on the ground.

But you’re neither friend nor foe, though I
Can’t seem to let you go…
The one thing that I still know is that you’re keeping me
    Down- you’re keeping me down…

But you’re onto me- onto me and all over…

Something always brings me back to you…
    It never takes too long.’

  4. Radiant_Darkness says:

This isn’t exactly a break-up song, but, it has the best line about unrequited love ever written. You’re So Last Summer by Taking Back Sunday:

    She said
“Don’t, don’t let it go to your head
Boys like you are dime a dozen
Boys like you are dime a dozen”
    She said
    “You’re a touch overrated,
    You’re a lush and I hate it,
But these grass stains on my knees
    They won’t mean a thing”

    And all I (all I)
Need to know (need to know)
Is that I’m something you’ll be missing
(is that I’m something that you’re missing)
Maybe I should hate you for this
Never really did ever quite get that part
Maybe I should hate you for this
Never really did ever quite get that…

    I’d never lie to you
Unless I had to I’ll do what I got to
Unless I had to I’ll do what I got to, the truth
Is you could slit my throat
And with my one last gasping breath
I’d apologize for bleeding on your shirt

    And all I (all I)
Need to know (need to know)
Is that I’m something you’ll be missing
(is that I’m something that you’re missing)
(maybe I should hate for this)
Maybe I should hate you for this
Never really did ever quite get that part
(maybe I should hate for this)
Maybe I should hate you for this
Never really did ever quite get that…

Cause I’m a wishful thinker with the worst intentions
This’ll be the last chance you get to drop my name
Cause I’m a wishful thinker with the worst intentions
This’ll be the last chance you get to drop my name

    If I’m just bad news, then you’re a liar (Maybe I should…)
If I’m just bad news, then you’re a liar (…hate you for this)
    If I’m just bad news, then you’re a liar (Maybe I should…)
If I’m just bad news, then you’re a liar (…hate you for this)
    If I’m just bad news, then you’re a liar (Maybe I should…)
If I’m just bad news, then you’re a liar (…hate you for this)
    If I’m just bad news, then you’re a liar (Maybe I should…)
If I’m just bad news, then you’re a liar (…hate you for this)

Maybe I should hate you for this
(If only you knew half as much as you pretend to)
Maybe I should hate you for this

    Well I’ll be damned
    Here comes your ghost again
    But that’s not unusual
It’s just that the moon is full
    And you happened to call
    And here I sit
    Hand on the telephone
    Hearing a voice I’d known
A couple of light years ago
    Heading straight for a fall

    As I remember your eyes
    Were bluer than robin’s eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
    Where are you calling from?
    A booth in the midwest
    Ten years ago
    I bought you some cufflinks
    You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
    They bring diamonds and rust

7am, waking up in the morning
Gotta be fresh, gotta go downstairs
Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal
Seein’ everything, the time is goin’
Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends (My friends)

    Kickin’ in the front seat
    Sittin’ in the back seat
    Gotta make my mind up
    Which seat can I take?

    It’s Friday, Friday
    Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
    Friday, Friday
    Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

    Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
    Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
    Fun, fun, fun, fun
    Lookin’ forward to the weekend

    Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday
    Today i-is Friday, Friday (Partyin’)
    We-we-we so excited
    We so excited
We gonna have a ball today

    Tomorrow is Saturday

Best song about a friend who uses drugs ever written. In my humble opinion. Born to Bleed, by my favorite band, A Thorn For Every Heart.

Some people think that you’re a bore now
Because you live your life in a haze
But who to try and tell you how
How you should spend the best of your days

And you never dream cuz you’re barely sleeping
But still you keep your head in the clouds
    You never come back down
    Oh whoa whoa whoa

You’ve never really been one for complaining
You’ve always kept your pain to yourself
Bottled up inside it bothers no one else
But really there’s just no one to tell

If you’re getting high then why do you feel so damn low
I think it’s getting out of control
The fuse is burning slow but still about to blow
I think it’s getting out of control

And you never dream cuz you’re barely sleeping
But still you keep your head in the clouds
    You never come back down
    Never come back down
    Oh whoa whoa whoa

I get the feeling you were born to bleed

Yeah I’ve heard the story that you’re down on your luck
Can bet you feel like your stuck
    Well now enough is enough
Cuz only you can make it better
Only you can make it stop
Living in the moment but you’re racing the clock for sure

If you’re getting high then why do you feel so damn low
I think it’s getting out of control
The fuse is burning slow but still about to blow
I think it’s getting out of control

And you never dream cuz you’re barely sleeping
But still you keep your head in the clouds
    You never come back down
    Never come back down
    Back down
This is what you get you get a hole in your head
A hole that matches your chest so that we never forget
This is what you get the only place feel safe
A cold empty heart, one filled with regret

Regret (I get the feeling you were born to bleed)
This is the last time the very last time
One will make it better and one will make it stop
Your pulse is racing your stomach tied in knots
Blood cells in your body now they gather to clot

Staring in the mirror it has never been clearer
Eyes are dilated you can see what you’ve created
Staring in the mirror it has never been clearer
Living in the moment it is the minute your heart stops

And you never dream cuz you’re barely sleeping
But still you keep your head in the clouds
    You never come back down
    Never come back down
This is what you get you get a hole in your head
A hole that matches your chest so that we never forget
This is what you get the only place feel safe

  8. Ducky says:

    Bright Blue Rose.

I skimmed across black water, without once submerging
Onto the banks of an urban morning
That hungers the first light, much much more
    Than mountains ever do.

And she like a ghost beside me, goes down with the ease of a dolphin
    And emerges unlearned, unshamed, unharmed
For she is the perfect creature, natural in every feature
And I am the geek with the alchemists’ stone.

For all of you who must discover,
For all who seek to understand,
For having left the path of others
You find a very special hand.

And it is a holy thing, and it is a precious time
And it is the only way
Forget-me-nots among the snow, it’s always been and so it goes
To ponder his death and his life eternally.

For all of you who must discover
For all who seek to understand,
For having left the path of others
You find a very special hand.

And it is a holy thing
And it is the only way
Forget-me-nots among the snow, it’s always been and so it goes
To ponder his death and his life eternally.

One bright blue rose outlives all those
Two thousand years and still it goes
To ponder his death and his life eternally.

Boston and St. John by Great Big Sea
(Aside from the verse about the suitors, this is a little bit what I’m feeling right now. Only instead of roving it’s just the usual living 400 miles apart deal.)

Girl, don’t tell me that it’s morning,
Can we keep the curtains drawn?
I haven’t given you fair warning,
But our ship, she sails at dawn.

And it’s true I must be going,
    But I swear I won’t be long;
    There isn’t that much ocean
    Between Boston and St. John.
I’m a rover and I’m bound to sail away,
I’m a rover, can you love me anyway?

    If some suitor comes approaching
Will you let him through your door?
But if I return half broken,
Will you still want me anymore?

And it’s true I must be going,
    But I swear I won’t be long;
    There isn’t that much ocean
    Between Boston and St. John.

    Close your eyes and dream,
    Tell me what you see
    Tell me what you want,
Just tell me that you’ll wait for me.

But oh, don’t tell me that it’s morning,
Can we keep the curtains drawn?
I haven’t given you fair warning,
But our ship, she sails at dawn.

And it’s true I must be going,
    But I swear I won’t be long;
    There isn’t that much ocean

Promise, the post-fireworks leaving music played at EPCOT:

    Every evening
    Brings an ending
    Every day becomes a legacy

    Every sunset
    Leads to morning
    With the promise of opportunity

We can reach for the stars we find along the way,
Dreaming as we learn to love every day

Promise, you will take my hand
    As tomorrow comes-
    We’ll go on

    We’ll go on
    Growing closer through the years
    Moving on
Through the good times and the tears
    Ever on
Another thousand circles ’round the sun
If two can be as one
    We’ll go on

    There is music,
    If you listen
In the rhythm of each breath we take

    Destinations,
    Undiscovered
Revelations, from every choice we make

    And I know-
There are diamonds dancing in the sky
All we have to do Is open our eyes

    Promise-
    We’ll walk side by side
    As a new day dawns
    We’ll go on

    We’ll go on
    Growing closer through the years.
    Moving on,
Through the good times and the tears.
    Ever on,
Another thousand circles ’round the sun.
    A new life has begun,
The two of us as one-
    We’ll go on.

    Moving on,
Through the good times and the tears.
    Ever on,
Another thousand circles ’round the sun.
    A new life has begun
When two of us are one
And we live to keep the promise-

    We’ll go on
    Ever on
    We’ll go on

I feel like this thread needs to be fuller. I love everything John Mayer writes, just saying… but skeleton song by Kate Nash is so beautiful. It’s about imaginary friends :)

    Skeleton you are my friend
But you are made of bone
And you have got no flesh and blood
Running through you to help protect the bone

Skeleton we have been friends for years
And you have seen me through some trials
    And tribulations and some tears
    But everybody thinks I’m weird
    And I should have known
    That it wouldn’t be long
Until you, you’ve got me standing in an awkward position
With unwanted attention and a need for explanation
And it’s not that I’m letting go of you
But I don’t know what to do
    Skeleton we are so close
But you have got no body
So why do you insist on wearing clothes
    Skeleton when we were young
    It was easy
    Even though the other kids
    They would tease me
But I was only seven I had you
    But now I’m twenty-two
And now it’s different, when I take you out
And you, you’ve got me standing in an awkward position
With unwanted attention and a need for explanation
And it’s not that I’m letting go of you
But I don’t know what to do
    ‘Cause sometimes at night,
I dream of the most terrible things
I take a hammer and I creep out of bed
    And I raise it high
    And I smash your head
    Fibular and tubular
    And ribs and cages, too
    In fact, while I’m here
I’ll smash the whole of you

    Smaaaaaaaaaaash !
But Skeleton, you are my friend
And I could never bring your life to an end
Yes Skeleton you are, you are my friend
And I will be there for you until the end
And even though, when I take you out
You’ve got me, you’ve got me standing in an awkward position
With unwanted attention and a need for explanation
I could, I could never let you go
And that is all I know
And that is all I know
And that is all I, that is all I know
And that is all I know, know

  13. KaiYves- Go Endeavour! says:

    “Mission”, by Rush:

    Hold your fire,
    Keep it burning bright
Hold the flame ’til the dream ignites
A spirit with a vision is a dream
    With a mission

    I hear their passionate music
Read the words that touch my heart
I gaze at their feverish pictures
The secrets that set them apart

When I feel the powerful visions
    Their fire has made alive
I wish I had that instinct
I wish I had that drive

    Spirits fly on dangerous missions
    Imaginations on fire
    Focused high on soaring ambitions
    Consumed in a single desire

In the grip of a nameless possession
A slave to the drive of obsession
A spirit with a vision is a dream
    With a mission.

    I watch their images flicker
Bringing light to a lifeless screen
I walk through their beautiful buildings
And I wish I had their dreams

But dreams don’t need to have motion
    To keep their spark alive
    Obsession has to have action
    Pride turns on the drive

    It’s cold comfort
    To the ones without it
    To know how they struggled
    How they suffered about it

If their lives were exotic and strange
They would likely have gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane

We each pay a fabulous price
    For our visions of paradise
But a spirit with a vision is a dream
    With a mission.

  14. Midnight Fiddler says:

(I’ve had the chorus to this stuck in my head ALL DAY.)

    Black Davie’s Ride

Black Davie’s riding down the highway
Thinking of silver, thinking of gold
Wondering why all the nights are so cold
Who will you be with when you are old?

Highwayman, highwayman what do you dream?
Are you a gentleman serving the queen?
Are you a rich man, servants by your side,
Or do you dream of another man’s bride?

Her hair was dark and all pinned up with gold,

Her lips were red, and her eyes were so bold.

You thought to have her, but the price would be your soul.

What kind of woman takes money to hold?

    Chorus

When nights were warmer and your soul was young,

There were so many things you would not have done,

But when you dance all night and sing the songs you’ve sung–

You pay the piper, and now the time has come…

    Chorus

You’ve stolen silver and gold at her command,

You’ve given everything you had to make her stand,

But you could never steal enough to win her hand–

And now she’s married and left you to hang!

Someone You’d Admire, by Fleet Foxes:
After all is said and done I feel the same
All that I hoped would change within me stayed
Like a huddled moonlit exile on the shore
Warming his hands, a thousand years ago

I walk with others in me yearning to get out
Claw at my skin and gnash their teeth and shout

If I had a boat I’d go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony, I’d ride him on my boat.
    And we could all together
    Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat.

    If I were Roy Rogers
    I’d sure enough be single
I couldn’t bring myself to marrying old Dale
It’d just be me and trigger
We’d go riding through them movies
Then we’d buy a boat and on the sea we’d sail.

And if I had a boat, I’d go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony, I’d ride him on my boat.
    And we could all together
    Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat.

The mystery masked man was smart
    He got himself a Tonto
‘Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free.
    But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said “kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
    I’m going out to sea.”

And if I had a boat, I’d go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony, I’d ride him on my boat.
    And we could all together
    Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat.

And if I were like lightning
    I wouldn’t need no sneakers.
I’d come and go wherever I would please.
And I’d scare ’em by the shade tree,
And I’d scare ’em by the light pole,
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea.

If I had a boat, I’d go out on the ocean,
And if I had a pony, I’d ride him on my boat.
    And we could all together

    Natalie Merchant- Thick as Thieves
    Remember how it all began,
The apple and the fall of man
    The price we paid,
    So the people say.
Down a path of shame it led us
Dared to bite the hand that fed us
    The fairy tale,
    The moral end,
    The wheel of fortune
    Never turns again.

The worst of it has come and gone
    In the chaos of millennium,
In the falling out of the doomsday crowd.
Their last retreat is moving slow,
They burn their bridges as they go,
    The heretic is beatified,
He’ll teach the harlot’s child to smile.

    Wracked again by indecision,
Should we make that small incision,
Testify to the bleeding heart inside?
    We cut, we scratched
    We rent, we slashed
And when he opened up at last
    Found a cul-de-sac
    Deep and black
    Of smoke and ash

    The wicked king of parody
    Is kissing all his enemies,
    On the seventh day,
    Of the seventh week.
The tyrant’s voice is softer now,
But just for one forgiving hour,
    Before the rise of his
    Iron fist again

    I’ve come tonight,
    I’ve come to know
    The way we are,
    The way we’ll go
    Come to measure this
The width of the wide abyss

I come to you in restless sleep
Where all your dreams turn bitter-sweet
    With voodoo doll philosophies
    And Day-Glo holy trinities

The crooked raft that leaves the shore
    Ferries drunken souls aboard
    Pilgrims march to Compostela,
Visions of their saint in yellow

    All follow deep in trance,
    Lost in a catatonic dance
    Know no future
    Damn the past
    Blind, warm, ecstatic
    Safe at last…

You’ve heard about the Flying Dutchman.

But just in case you think it’s lies,
Then here’s a ghost for our own time…

You see there was a crash at night.
And the pilots in command all died,
And after many months has passed,
The widows all had cried their last…

    (chorus)

And when the moon shines on the silver wings…
When the moon shines on the silver wings…
    When the moon shines…
Look out, here comes… the ghost of flight 401…

The ghost of flight 401 appeared aboard the jet airplanes…
In flesh and blood and clothes he came…
On an eastern airline I can’t name.
    But suddenly the ghost appeared
Of the pilots that had died that year.
I’m not saying they were puffs of smoke
They were real as life, it ain’t no joke…

    (repeat chorus)

How long before I get in?
Before it starts, before I begin?
    How long before you decide?
Before I know what it feels like?
Where to? Where do I go?
If you never try, then you’ll never know.
How long do I have to climb,
Up on the side of this mountain of mine?

Look up, I look up at night,
Planets are moving at the speed of light.
Climb up, up in the trees,
    every chance that you get,
    is a chance you seize.
How long am I gonna stand,
with my head stuck under the sand?
I’ll start before I can stop,
before I see things the right way up.

All that noise, and all that sound,
All those places I got found.
And birds go flying at the speed of sound,
to show you how it all began.
Birds came flying from the underground,
If you could see it then you’d understand.

    Ideas that you’ll never find,
All the inventors could never design.
The buildings that you put up,
Japan and China all lit up.
The sign that I couldn’t read,
    or a light that I couldn’t see,
some things you have to believe,
but others are puzzles, puzzling me.

All that noise, and all that sound,
All those places I got found.
And birds go flying at the speed of sound,
to show you how it all began.
Birds came flying from the underground,
if you could see it then you’d understand,
Oh, when you see it, then you’ll understand.

All those signs, I knew what they meant.
    Some things you can invent.
Some get made, and some get sent,
    Ooh.
Birds go flying at the speed of sound,

“Wooden Heart”, by Listener. It’s not quite rap, not quite poetry. To quote an article that Wikipedia quotes, Listener has “a wide spanning style that features a heavy vocal element that is neither screamed, sang, or just spoken. The lyrics are more like ranting poetry.” Find it on Youtube and watch the official video.

We’re all born to broken people on their most honest day of living
and since that first breath… We’ll need grace that we’ve never given
I’ve been haunted by standard red devils and white ghosts
and it’s not only when these eyes are closed
these lies are ropes that I tie down in my stomach,
but they hold this ship together tossed like leaves in this weather
and my dreams are sails that I point towards my true north,
stretched thin over my rib bones, and pray that it gets better
    but it won’t won’t, at least I don’t believe it will…
so I’ve built a wooden heart inside this iron ship,
to sail these blood red seas and find your coasts.
don’t let these waves wash away your hopes
this war-ship is sinking, and I still believe in anchors
pulling fist fulls of rotten wood from my heart, I still believe in saviors
but I know that we are all made out of shipwrecks, every single board
washed and bound like crooked teeth on these rocky shores
so come on and let’s wash each other with tears of joy and tears of grief
and fold our lives like crashing waves and run up on this beach
come on and sew us together, tattered rags stained forever
we only have what we remember

I am the barely living son of a woman and man who barely made it
but we’re making it taped together on borrowed crutches and new starts
we all have the same holes in our hearts…
everything falls apart at the exact same time
that it all comes together perfectly for the next step
but my fear is this prison… that I keep locked below the main deck
I keep a key under my pillow, it’s quiet and it’s hidden
and my hopes are weapons that I’m still learning how to use right
but they’re heavy and I’m awkward…always running out of fight
so I’ve carved a wooden heart, put it in this sinking ship
hoping it would help me float for just a few more weeks
because I am made out of shipwrecks, every twisted beam
lost and found like you and me scattered out on the sea
so come on let’s wash each other with tears of joy and tears of grief
and fold our lives like crashing waves and run up on this beach
come on and sew us together, just some tattered rags stained forever
we only have what we remember

My throat it still tastes like house fire and salt water
I wear this tide like loose skin, rock me to sea
if we hold on tight we’ll hold each other together
and not just be some fools rushing to die in our sleep
all these machines will rust I promise, but we’ll still be electric
shocking each other back to life
Your hand in mine, my fingers in your veins connected
    our bones grown together inside
our hands entwined, your fingers in my veins braided
our spines grown stronger in time
because our church is made out of shipwrecks
from every hull these rocks have claimed
but we pick ourselves up, and try and grow better through the change
so come on y’all and let’s wash each other with tears of joy and tears of grief
and fold our lives like crashing waves and run up on this beach
come on and sew us together, we’re just tattered rags stained forever
we only have what we remember

Your illness spills against my face

    Sinking ship,
How long can you hold still?
Oh, can’t you feel the coming waves?

A perfect Sunday portrait of my mother painting horses all alone
Of lovers and of leavers still believing they are free to come and go

    Sinking ship,
How long can you hold still?
Your illness is all that you are

A portrait of my father as a baby sleeping underneath the stars

A small pill of forgiveness I am giving to myself
    It’s what I need

A small gift of fulfillment I am hoping you will open and receive

    Sinking ship,
How long can you hold still?
Your illness fills this empty room

A portrait of your lover softly drowning in the warm waters within
A perfect Sunday portrait of my mother sending signals through the drum
A portrait of my sadness finding shelter in the safety of my home

    Okay…

Hear the rime of the ancient Mariner,
see his eye as he stops one of three.
Mesmerizes one of the wedding guests,
stay here and listen to the nightmares of the sea.
And the music plays on as the bride passes by,
caught by his spell, the Mariner tells his tale.

Driven South to the land of the snow and ice,
to a place where nobody’s been,
through the snow fog flies on the albatross,
hailed on God’s name, hoping good luck it brings.
And the ship sails on, back to the North.
Through the fog and ice, the albatross follows on.

The Mariner kills the bird of good omen,
his shipmates cry against what he’s done.
But when the fog clears, they justify him,
and make themselves a part of the crime.

Sailing on, and on, and North across the sea.
Sailing on, and on, and North ’till all is calm.

The albatross begins with it’s vengeance,
a terrible curse, a thirst has begun.
His shipmates blame bad luck on the Mariner,
about his neck, the dead bird is hung.

And the curse goes on, and on, and on at sea.
And the thirst goes on, and on for them and me.

Day after day, day after day we struck to breath nor motion,
as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean.
Water, water everywhere, and all the boards did shrink.
Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink.

‘There,’ calls the mariner, ‘there comes a ship o’er line!’
but how can she sail with no wind in her sails, and no tide?
    See, onward she comes.
Onward she nears, out of the sun.
See, she has no crew, she has no life,
    wait, but there’s two.

Death, and she Life In Death,
they throw the dice for the crew.
She wins the Mariner, and he belongs to her now.
    Then, crew one by one,
they drop down dead. Two hundred men.
    She, she Life In Death,
She lets him live, Her chosen one.

“One after one, by the star-dogged moon,
too quick for groan nor sigh
each turned his face with a ghastly pang,
and pierced me with his eye
    four times fifty living men
(and I heard nor sigh nor groan)
with heavy thump, a lifeless lump,
they dropped down one by one”

The curse, it lives on in their eyes,
the Mariner, he wished he’d die
along with the sea creatures, but they lived on so did he.
And by the light of the moon,
he prays for their beauty not doom.
    With heart, he blesses them,
God’s creatures, all of them too.

Then, the spell starts to break,
the albatross falls from his neck,
sinks down like lead into the sea.
Then down it falls, comes the rain!

Hear the groans of the long dead seamen,
see them stir, and they start to rise.
    Bodies lifted by good spirits,
none of them speak and they’re lifeless in their eyes.

Revenge is still sought, penance starts again,
cast into a trance, and the nightmare carries on.

Now the curse is finally lifted,
and the Mariner sights his home.
Spirits go from the long dead bodies,
form their own light, and the Mariner’s left alone.

And then a boat came sailing towards him,
it was a joy he could not believe.
The pilot’s boat, his son, and the hermit.
Penance of life will fall unto him.
And the ship, it sinks like lead into the sea.
And the hermit shrives the Mariner of his sins.

The Mariner’s bound to tell of his story,
to tell his tale wherever he goes,
to teach God’s word by his own example,
that we must love all things that God made.
And the wedding guest, a sad and wiser man.
And the tale goes on, and on, and on…

And, no I have not read the actual poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, yet. I will, though, sometime.

Since I’m on a Phantom kick at the moment: Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again. Andrew Lloyd Webber.

You were once my one companion
    You were all that mattered
You were once a friend and father
    Then my world was shattered

Wishing you were somehow here again
    Wishing you were somehow near
Sometimes it seemed if I just dreamed
    Somehow you would be here

Wishing I could hear your voice again
    Knowing that I never would
Dreaming of you won’t help me to do
All that you dreamed I could

    Passing bells and sculpted angels
    Cold and monumental
Seem for you the wrong companions
    You were warm and gentle

Too may years, fighting back tears
Why can’t the past just die?
Wishing you were somehow here again
    Knowing we must say goodbye
Try to forgive, teach me to live,
Give me the strength to try
No more memories, no more silent tears
No more gazing across the wasted years

    And made El Dorado

    For only one millenium
I know my legacy is to fulfill
My promise to all my people
Who have trusted me, the gods

    Preserve El Dorado

“That’s The Story That’s Told By The Bard”, from the show “Histeria!”

A play by William Shakespeare always stimulates your thought,
Because you spent two hours trying to figure out the plot,
He wrote famous lines and phrases for his dog like “out, d****d Spot!”
    (I’m a victim of circumstance!)

So who is this guy the critics praise,
Who’s famous for his turn of phrase,
    Wrote thirty-seven different plays,
    And lived in Elizabethan days,
    And made Lawrence Oliver’s career?
    Lend me your ear!

He lived in Stratford ‘pon Avon apartment 2-B,
Was it 2-B, or not 2-B?
I really don’t know, it’s confusing to me!
How do you understand Shakespeare with all of the
harks and the hos and all the flowery prose that he writes?
    For men wearing tights!
    So bring up the lights,
    And let’s meet the bard!

Hamlet’s real father is killed by his brother,
Who now becomes king and then marries his mother,
It ends up with everyone killing each other,
And that is the story that’s told by the bard!
Hey nanni nanni na, tra la la, fa la la la la la la!
King Henry V is a play about war,
And so is King John and King Henry IV,
While Falstaff laughed, and fell on the floor,
So Henry VI went back to the gore.

    King Lear, Shakespeare’s
Tragical ruler who casts out his daughter,
The story is sad, ’cause then he feels bad,
And then he goes mad, and both of them die!
Hey nanni nanni na, tra la la, fa la la la la la la!

At Romeo and Juliet, everyone cries,
    At Titus Andronicus everyone dies,
Don’t you just love these Shakespearean guys?
Aah haa ha haa ha haaa!!!

You go to the theatre and pay all that money,
To see all these actors who dress really funny,
You say to your date, “Are you getting this, honey?
‘Cause I’m really lost, so explain it to me!”
Hey nanni nanni na, tra la la, fa la la la la la la!

MacBeth is a guy who is really ambitious
And that’s why the king sleeps with the fishes
Then he kills others, it’s really quite vicious,
Until in the end, he gets stabbed in the duff!
    Oh, no-no!
    By MacDuff!
    Better!

He wrote comic romances with laughter and dances,
Where everyone prances while taking their chances
With love, love, love, love, love!

Like The Comedy of Errors and Pericles too,
Then Measure for Measure and Taming the Shrew,
Two Gents from Verona and then Much Ado About Nothing
Then he’d write The Tempest and Twelfth Night,
The Merry Wives of Windsor, As You Like It, and Cymbaline,
    Love’s Labours Lost, A Winter’s Tale,
    And also Midsummer Night’s Dream

In The Merchant of Venice a debt is entangled,
It’s Coriolanus where soldiers get mangled,
Othello’s the fellow whose wife ends up strangled,
And that is the story that’s told by the bard!
Hey nanni nanni na, tra la la, fa la la la la la la!

Troilus and Cressida, now there was a pair,
They were in love and she had an affair,
It’s not a great play so we really don’t care,
Hey nanni nanni na, tra la la!

King Richard II’s a guy that went dumb,
King Richard III is the guy with the hump,
Timon of Athens, he was a chump,
‘Cause all of his money was lent,
    Now it’s spent,
    And he can’t,
    Pay the rent,
And he has to go live in a tent!

    Julius Caesar’s about an attack,
All of his friends put a knife in his back,
And then a great play that would come after that,
    Is Anthony and Cleopat…
Tra la la, tra la la, tra la la la la la la la la!

King Henry VIII has six different wives,
He’s faithful to each ’til the next one arrives,
Most of them ended up losing their lives,
One minute they’re wedded, and then they’re beheaded,
It’s something that later he kinda regretted,

But Shakespeare’s plays are the places to be,
For violence and killing and murder you see,
You really can’t show it on childrens’ TV,
    But that is the story
    Though it’s bloody and gorey
Yes, that is the story that’s told by the Bard!
    All’s Well That Ends Well!

    “Be Still”, The Killers

    Be still
    And go on to bed
    Nobody knows what lies ahead
    And life is short
    To say the least
We’re in the belly of the beast

    Be still
    Wild and young
    Long may your innocence reign
    Like shells on the shore
And may your limits be unknown
And may your efforts be your own
If you ever feel you can’t take it anymore

    Don’t break character
You’ve got a lot of heart
Is this real or just a dream?
    Rise up like the sun
Labor till the work is done

    Be still
    One day you’ll leave
    Fearlessness on your sleeve
When you’ve come back, tell me what did you see
    What did you see?
Was there something out there for me?

    Be still
    Close your eyes
Soon enough you’ll be on your own
    Steady and straight
And if they drag you through the mud
It doesn’t change what’s in your blood
    (Over chains)
    When they knock you down

    Don’t break character
You’ve got a lot of heart
Is this real or just a dream?
    Be still
    Be still
    Be still
    Be still

    Over rock and chain!
    Over sunset plain!
    Over trap and snare!
    When you’re in too deep
    In your wildest dream
    In your made up scheme
    When they knock you down
    When they knock you down

    Don’t break character
    You’ve got sooooo much heart
Is this real or just a dream?

    “Burning Heart”, Survivor

    Two worlds collide,
    Rival nations.
    It’s a primitive clash,
    Venting years of frustrations.
    Bravely we hope
    Against all hope.
There is so much at stake
    Seems our freedom’s up
    Against the ropes
    Does the crowd understand?
    Is it East versus West
    Or man against man?
    Can any nation stand alone?

    In the burning Heart
    Just about to burst
    There’s a quest for answers
    An unquenchable thirst
    In the darkest night
    Rising like a spire
    In the burning heart
    The unmistakable fire!

    In the burning heart

    In the warrior’s code,
    There’s no surrender.
    Though his body says stop
    His spirit cries – never!
    Deep in our soul
    A quiet ember
    Know it’s you against you
    It’s the paradox
    That drives us on
    It’s a battle of wills
    In the heat of attack
    It’s the passion that kills
    The victory is yours alone

    In the burning Heart
    Just about to burst

Lying awake intent at tuning in on you
If I was young, it didn’t stop you coming through
    Oh a-oh

They took the credit for your second symphony,
Rewritten by machine on new technology,
And now I understand the problems you can see
    Oh a-oh
    I met your children
    Oh a-oh
    What did you tell them?

Pictures came and broke your heart
    Oh, a, a, a, oh

And now we meet in an abandoned studio
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago
And you remember the jingles used to go

I tell you what i’m gonna do
    I’m gonna lighten up
I’m gonna throw a box of books and my beloved guitar
Into the back of my truck and try my luck in
    California (California)

I’m gonna stay away from LA
I’m staying far away from there
I’m going north of San Francisco
    Into the cleaner air
I’m gonna get a little land with the money i’ve saved
And buy an old house that i can work on
Where the next nearest neighbor lives miles away
I’ll never have to mow the lawn (right on)
    California (California)

And when the house is all finished
    And the garden is grown
I’m gonna write you a letter
    Asking you to come home
And I know that you will come
Yes, I know that you will come
’cause others may know where you been

Some people want to watch the world swirl into the sink
Why would you argue is the glass half full, it’s a mess
    I drank the first half,
You can drink the rest… Hey!

    Every song I’ve ever known,
    Carry it in my bones

Every time I rock the mic

Or I’ll go on my own

    I’m lookin up
    I’m lookin up
    All the way up
    I’m lookin up
    All the way…

Look at me now I think you’d find it hard to believe
Back in my yearbook, voted least likely to succeed
You go and worry ’bout the things you can’t control
I can see the donut, you can see the hole

    Everywhere I go is home,
    Every town and every road,
    Every song I’ve ever known,
    Carry it in my bones

“Yakko’s Universe”, as featured on the show “Animaniacs” and written by Randy Rogel (with my own tweaks to make it up-to-date):

Everybody lives on a street in a city
Or a village or a town for what it’s worth.
And they’re all inside a country which is part of a continent
That sits upon a planet known as Earth.

And the Earth is a ball full of oceans and some mountains
Which is out there spinning silently in space.
And living on that Earth are the plants and the animals
And also the entire human race.

    It’s a great big universe
    And we’re all really puny.
    We’re just tiny little specks
About the size of Mickey Rooney.
It’s big and black and inky
And we are small and dinky
    It’s a big universe and we’re not!

And we’re part of a vast interplanetary system
Stretching seven hundred billion miles long.
With eight planets and a sun; we think the Earth’s the only one
That has life on it, although we could be wrong.
Across the interstellar voids are a billion asteroids
Including meteors and Comet Halley too.
And there’s over fifty moons floating out there like balloons
    In a panoramic trillion-mile view.

And still it’s all a speck amid a hundred billion stars
In a galaxy we call the Milky Way.
It’s sixty thousand trillion miles from one end to the other
And still that’s just a fraction of the way.
‘Cause there’s a hundred billion galaxies that stretch across the sky
Filled with constellations, planets, moons and stars.
And still the universe extends to a place that never ends
Which is maybe just inside a little jar!

    It’s a great big universe
    And we’re all really puny,
    We’re just tiny little specks
About the size of Mickey Rooney.
Though we don’t know how we got here
We all mean a lot here
    It’s a big universe and it’s ours!

(Alternative verses that didn’t make the TV version:

And we’re part of a vast interplanetary system
With everyone revolving ’round the sun,
With Mercury in between us, and after that comes Venus,
And still the solar system’s just begun.
Past the Earth on towards the stars, where we find the planet Mars,
Which is over fifty-million miles away,
And orbiting in pattern, are Jupiter and Saturn,
Uranus and there’s Neptune, so we say, …all together!

It’s a great big universe and everyone’s a part of it,
And no one knows just where’s the end or start of it,
    We all live here together,
    It’s our home forever…
    It’s a big universe and it’s ours!)
