Coy Woodnesse

A forum for practicing archaic English, foreign languages, and other off-the-beaten-track forms of communication.

(Coy woodnesse means “quiet madness” in Middle English, the version of our language spoken about 600 years ago.)

Useful resources (additions welcome!):
“Chaucer’s Middle English” site at the University of California, Santa Barbara
Librarius has another Middle English glossary and a load of information about Chaucer and the Canterbury Tales

i am a poor deprived child who is really bad at olde english and all that good stuff but i will try anyway.

hang on, sensing complications. i can’t say computer in olde english. or middle english. or elizabethan. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

ah vell. i shall try anyhoo.

alas that there is no word in this fyne language that can describe the author’s obssession, to wit, the computer! It is a cruel world indeed, where poor deprived children sit at a terribly slow school computer w/ a messed up keyboard, and try to speak whatever the heck this language is i’m speaking with such little success as to lose the topic merely because computers were invented in the wrong time period! My heart is sad, and i’m sad too, but my heart is part of me, which is sad, which makes my heart sad, which makes no sense, which….whatever. I sit here in the torture they call Skool, and bemoan my fate.

Sanity is relative. Sanity is relative. Sanity is relative. just keep saying that guys. Sanity is relative. Sanity is relative. Sanity….ok shutting up.

Or maybe because all these requests for new threads are coyly driving me wood.

(For you newcomers from the 21st century, in Middle English “coy” meant “quiet,” “wood” meant “mad,” and “woodnesse” was “madness.”

*sigh* tis a merciless calling, blogging.

well, the Boredom has begun. The Boredom is a period in my skool year when i get really bored taking notes and start taking them in dwarvish runes (which, i am proud to say, i have memorized, certifying me as a lost cause) History this year. Last year it was science. We don’t take all that many notes in science this year. how odd. at the same time YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well anyway, it’s sad that I can write in them, and it’s sad that I can read them, but the really sad part is that if somebody asks me about it I will give them a detailed explanation, ending with me scribbling down the alphabet on a random sheet of paper and giving it to them. It invariably ends up in the trash. What a waste of trees. Oh vell. Anyhoo, I am proud to say that my geekiness is pure and absolute. go me.

  161. Ebeth the Lurker says:

This is the language of Ranters and Rhymers
It sounds much like English it’s true
But the difference is, it rants a lot and
always rhymes, no matter the boos.
For the rhyming is questionable at most
    The speakers often become toast
The mobs that attack them don’t like to hear
This incessant bad rhyming that hurts the ear
    But that’s just too bad
    We’ll make our last stand
    The best to be had
For us long-suffering worshippers of Crraw.
    So it is time
    come help those who rhyme
To escape the death and blood
Of those who think our words are mud
Those who would never offer us a milk dud
Hear our cry-To arms! To arms!
    Desert the lonely, dying farms
    Come fight with us
    Don’t ride a bus
But a horse, because they’re cool
And please, remember not to drool.
    “This song makes no sense!
    You’re just rhyming random words!”
    That’s what the unbelieving say.
    But none of that now
    Today is our day
To wash those silly fools away
    By singing a beautiful lay
    Dressed in grey
    On this day
    “I say!
    This poem sucks!
Even if you are wearing a tux”
    He’s right i guess
    This is a terrible mess
    Perhaps it’s best
    To quit.
    Find another language
    Where people don’t try
    To burn and fry
    It’s speakers every day
While they sing a beautiful lay
    Dressed in grey
    I say!
    Get away!
    What are you doing?
    Stop that!
    Filthy rat!
OW!!!!! *is gagged, handcuffed, and tied to a tree*

Let that be a lesson to all.
Following Crraw will be your fall
    Please do not try
    I say with a sigh
    to rhyme when you can’t
    And your skills are scant.

    THE END
