Music…
Here are some ideas.
Exotic Musical Instruments
Styles of Music
Composers
Anyone else here buy CDs purely because of the artwork on their cases? I do that all too often.
Also, is Billie Holiday good? I like Strange Fruit but I don’t really know much more of her music…
And is Madina Lake emo?
I like Dave Brubeck. He’s cool. 8)
2. Yep. About Billie Holliday.
Has anyone heard of the puppini sisters? I’ve only heard one of their songs on Tv, but they seemed pretty cool.
I also like Corinne bailey rae, and love the beatles.
I like Josephine Foster.
I guess composers got picked. TMBG (They Might Be Giants) is a good alternitive group to listen to for fun because of the crazy lyrics. Here is an example from a part of a song on their latest album, “The Else,” titled “With the Dark.”
I’m gettin’ tired of all my nautical dreams
I’m gettin’ tired of all my nautical dreams
Rockin’ my pirate home,
Rockin’ my peg leg stone,
My mind naturally turns
To taxodermy
To taxodermy
Btw if you didn’t know, taxodermy is the science of stuffing dead animals. I know, gross. Another good group is MMW (Medeski, Martin, and Wood.) They are an instrumental jazz trio and have some really complicated music. They are very talented.
I love listening and playing music. What instruments do u guys play? I play clarinet, sax, and piano
5- What is her style?
I play the flute. I recently got a pottery flute thing from china, whcih is shapped sort of like a sphere, except it’s flattened on the bottom and goes sort of oblong at the top. There’s 6 holes on the front and two in the back that you cover with your fingers, and another hole at the top you blow across, sort of like you do to a bottle to make a noise. Sort of sounds like that too.
Looking it up, I think it’s called a Xun. That sherch’ll get you a picture, anyway. Mines smooth an black, and has a dragon on it.
8- I don’t know, really.
9-Xun= Chineese ocarina
I’ve played piano for 4 or so years now. I want to learn to play sax or harmonica.
w00t! new thread.
2-nope. madina lake is pop-punk, which pretty much classifies them as bad, but not emo.
my guitar teacher is really into frank zappa, and therefore, i am too. anyhoo, frank zappa i scool. he’s an insanely talented guitar player. awesome riffs.
9- Cool!
Anyone ever heard of Fountains of Wayne? They are an awesome band.
15 – Now I have.
I am disturbed that here in denmark, people listen to really bad american hip-hop. Most of them have no idea what the song is about. I was filming a pigeon on my cousins cell when I looked at her music files, and saw that the one that she had put as her favorite had a very inapropriate title to a song for a ten year old. She apperently had no idea what it was about.
2- Billie Holiday is very good.
I have to say, I have a love hate relationship with music. My mother is talented music player, I’m named after a famous person who plays a recorder (a recorderer?), my five year old brother was able to, at the age of two, play a beat on the coffee table (the one in that song where they keep singing “we will rock you”) my step-father has been in a band, plays music all the time (literally) and plays a guitar whenever he thinks that it’s getting too quiet. I have recieved drums, recorders, flutes, guitars, and lap harps for easter, my birthdays, and christmas, i have to concentrate while keeping a steady simple beat, i never play music, i can’t sing, and the instruments that were given to me have all been given to my brother, who uses them to my despair. i like a couple of bands, but only to the point where I like a few songs and wouldn’t really care if the singer died or the band broke up. maybe it has to do with that I have a constant ringing and throbbing in my ears or that I’ve simply been overexposed to it. Or maybe it has somethings to do with that whenever my half brother is exclamed over his musical genius, my step father always exclaims “It’s all in the blood!” and then looks at me meaningfully.
I love visual stuff. Painting and drawing has all come naturally to me. I can tell if two colors go or do not go together in less than two seconds. I’ve one prises in national competitions for paintings, but my parents fail to mention ths when they give thhe grandparents the monthly update. And when the teacher at the local skating rink called my mom to tell her that she thought that I had an uncanny talent for being able to do figure skating stuff without ever having taken lessons, my mom simply told her that I was going to be a brilliant scientist or a harpist.
*family matters!*
Music!!!
=Blind Guardian
=DragonForce
=Fantomas
=Talesin Orchestra
=System of a Down
=Rihanna
=Franz Ferdianand
=Gorillaz
=KT Tunstall
=Black Eyed Peas
=Fergie
also:
=John Mayer (teh pwnage!!!!)
=Jack Johnson
=James Blunt
18- I have a grudge against the Black Eyed Peas.
i like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs sometimes. Other times, Wolf Blues. 2 and a half hours of jazz instruments mimicing wolves.
17- a recorderist, actually.
21- Interesting.
I just tried to play my dad’s old snare drum that I found in the attic, but it’s really hard! I play the cello, and I can’t even play a roll on the drums.
17- ouch.
23- Isn’t a drum roll rather difficult? I can play the first coupl of notes on a kiddy acordian of london bridge…
17- Oooh. Not. Cool. Just keep going with your kind of art and tell them it’s just as good as making music. Or that it’s music paper.
Oops, music on paper I meant.
25- *laughs*
I play the recorder. Professionally. Not up to the standard of the person I suspect Vixen is named after, but people clap, so I must be getting some of the notes right. And I play bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, shawms, curtal, and a few other exotics.
I was going to say that it’s a shame the recorder is often not taken seriously nowadays. It’s a nice little instrument, and it was all the rage in the 18th century. I remember it well.
28- o.O
29- haha.
Beatles! They are all good!
17) Now that is an unsavory situation…First, I think that everyone can find joy in music and you are most likely driven away from recreational listening because of how things are being forced on you…perhaps with time you’ll find things you like. But, more importantly, the stuff with your family, that’s crazy. I can understand them wanting you to be interested in music, but to go so far as to tell someone what you’re going to be is…outrageous. Just keep doing what you love no matter what. And maybe you could even show your grandparents your stuff yourself? Unless they live far away..but then, you could always mail them some of your stuff, I bet they’d love that!
I play nothing. I tried violin, but I failed. I like to write.
17-*is ecstatic* you’re danish! me too! men… kan du tale dansk?
eller.hvad?
and yes. mycousin living in denmark likes rap for some odd reason.
18-dude… how can you like blind guardian and soad… and then like the black eyed peas….and fergie…..and dragonforce…and rihanna…. *is sad.* lol. two really good bands+a bunch of bad ones.
I have a violin in my room but I do not take lessons. I occasionally pick it up and either play songs from the Suzuki level 1 book I also have or just fiddle around and play little tunes from music I like by ear. Usually not very well. (Mind you I have taken lessons before, I just don’t now. I took them from kindergarten through fourth grade so I know how to hold and play the violin. I’ve also taken a bit of piano and some flute.)
17- Stick with art! Good luck with your parents insistance though, that really sucks. But definately go for what you enjoy. Not everyone has to enjoy music, you have great strengths in other areas. I hope your parents realize that. Like Axa said, maybe try to show your grandparents your art?
34-is violin supposed to be really hard? meh. violins are awesome, so ill shutup.
33- Ja! Hvor bør du? I Danmark eller i America? Jeg bør i Danmark, og jeg var fodt her, men vi var i America for otte år. Er begge dine foreldre dansk? *is also ecstatic* *needs Danish thread*
35- I think a violin is difficult. Don’t know.
31-, 34- Thanks.
“And She Was” by Talking Heads. Like that song. Imagining how it could go well in the first credits of an inspiring movie.
When I was little I wanted to play violin, but our school doesn’t have an orchestra, only a band. So I choose flute instead, which I love now so it’s okay.
35: Playing the violin is harder for some people than for others. I don’t know why, only that there are a million and one things to remember. ex. how hard to press the bow to the strings, where to put the bow, is there enough rosin, is your hand in the right place, ect. Actually, there are many, many more things. I don’t think it’s that hard, but I play second violin in the orchestra, so the music’s a little easier. Unless you ask the first violins, who swear they’ve got the easier part. For me though, the violin is the only instrument that I can get a sound out of.
Yes, drum rolls take some practice. I can’t even belive it is all that impresses nonmusical people when i play complicated music on my drums. 28- Awesome! You sound like me! Last year in 5th grade (I’m now going into 7th) I played a short song on my sopranino recorder with some really fast trills and mordants as a demonstration for the music concert. My old music teacher says her students still bring up the topic in class. My mother’s brother’s wife’s brother is really good at recorder too. He gave us a cd he made with his software music- mixing program of him playing his recorders. It’s really good.
The piano pwns everything because it piano players can play up to 10 notes at a time.
41- Not really. You can’t do vibrato on a piano. Plus, other keyboard instruments can play more, such as the pipe prgan and calliope. 17- That sure stinks. I wish I could have some of those unwanted instruments.
37- Talking Heads is pretty good. Some of their last music has very intresting lyrics.
On comment 42 i meant to say pipe organ.
I like peiauno… I meant piano…although that could be a new instrument…the peiauno…joy…
I also like…clarinet, Oboe, violin, recorder, and bagpipes…
I play all of them and beleive it or not my highest grade is recorder and Im doing grade 6 at the end of the year!!!
I am holding to my opinion that stringed instruments are the hardest, especially cello and violin (maybe base, I don’t have much experience with them). I play cello, and it is HARD. There are eight bajillion things to remember, and you have to keep your fingers rounded while playing really fast, and do two hands at once, AND do vibrato!
I don’t know what to write, so I will just make a list of my favourite singers.
Green Day
The Beastles ( i mean Beatles)
Fall Out Boy
NickleBack
Avril Lavinge
And some others…. but I forgot. I’m so dumb.
Yess, we’re playing a Beatles medly for marching band this year. Just got teh letter and a copy of Eleanor Rigby. Other than that we’re playing variations of When I’m 64 and Can’t Buy Me Love. Very cool.
There is no type of hardest instrument, it just depends on what you play on them.
The Marching Band I’m in is playing all things color themed. I can’t remember all the names but : Green, Silver, Rhapsody in Blue, and Back in Black.
Ought to be fun.
yeah! the GAPA’s took my suggestion! yipedeedo. hmmmm…..i think that all instuments are all hard in their own ways. stringed instuments give me nightmares. personally, i love stringed instuments, but i cna’t play any to save my life. so i stick with piano. wich is hard in its own way. not to mention my fingers are so small adn dinky and, and, and…..aagghhh! well, you get the point. i’m currently in level 4/5/6 (i have no clue what i’m really in but its not kiddie stuff).
bands i like:
RUSH!!!!! me loves dem! dey roxy me soxy!
dreamtheatre-got them from my older bro
3DG-they are an insane rock band
Red-christian rock
Kutless-again, christian rock

50-Dream Theatre are teh pwn.
36-jeg bor i new york, men jueg tar til danmark ver sommer. og min more er dansk, men min far er ikke. jeg har aldrid gaaet i skole i danmark, sa jeg kan ikke skrive saa godt, men… jeg kan godt tale. *seconds request for danish thread, despite it only being for two people.*
So… anyone like Sufjan Stevens?
49- Rhapsody in Blue is an awesome song. It still does not pwn. Nothing related to music pwns.
53-excuse me? you are awestruck by the song rhapsody in blue, it fills you with awe, and yet it does not pwn? are you kidding? dude. music pwnz. i would say that everything related to music pwnz, but…it doesnt. heh.
54- I believe he’s saying he doesn’t like the term pwn, and it doesn’t fit in with what he thinks music should ideally be. Like some people love ‘chocolate’ but hate ‘choklit.’
I like-
Flaming Lips
YeahYeahYeahs
Hanson Brothers (sometimes only)
X (sometimes… a few of their songs…maybe…)
And a bunch of other single songs.
Nothing is pwning in music because it is too good for any one element of music to pwn over other elements. That’s all. Disagree if you like, you can have your own opinions.
Any of you guys watch Live Earth? What do you think/about the atending bands?
I play violin, or fiddle- if you prefer. I have never found the actual playing of it very hard, but that might just be me. I love to play Celtic fiddle, and I do it whenever I can.
Asfar as my faveourite bands, I realy can’t say. In my iTunes, I have 1072 songs, 66 albums, 9 genres, and, 163 artists.
I listen to a lot of crazy stuff. From Gaelic Storm’s Celtic rock/pub songs to Paul Hillier and the Theatre of Voices, beautiful choral music. Hesperus, [early music] to a CD my friend just gave me of Bright Eyes….
I mostly prefer the Celtic or early music, but I’ve been discovering more modern music n the past half a year or so.
I’ve grown up with my Mom listening to Classical/orchestral
or world music, and my Dad listening to Beck, Lyle Loveit, Muddy Waters, Glenn Miller and organ music cranked to he max in the barn. So now I’m defining “my” music, and I’m aways stealing my Mom’s CDs.
I also like to sing. But I never do in public, unless I’m realy comfortable with who I’m with.
I’ve always been shy, so playing in public used to be really hard for me, but I’m mostly getting over that. I just had a recital today, and I was doing fine, but then I messed up becauseI got nervous. Ah well…..
I’m getting a proper piano! I’ve been playing on a *runs to count* 38 key yamaha keyboard. Lovely thing, but I must move on. Twas beautiful for my one fingered picking outs, but now that I’m playing pieces like Ronda al Turca, by mozart, I find that I’m missing a few octaves. So, I’m getting a full size Clavinova 220 digital piano. We just re arranged my living room to make space for it. My favorite bands/singers are (In order)-
Sarah Kelly (Worship music)
Casting crowns (Worship)
Point of Grace (Worship)
Joy Williams (Worship)
Natalie Grant (Worship)
My favourite albums from these groups are (in order)
Take me away (Sarah Kelly)
Steady on (Point of Grace)
Casting Crowns (Casting Crowns)
Deeper life (Natalie Grant)
Genesis (Joy Williams)
And favorite songs, from these albums are (in order)-
Take me away (Take me away)
When the wind blows (Steady on)
Live for today (Deeper life)
Beautiful redemtion (Genesis)
Who am I (Casting Crowns)
Any body like Johnny Cash?
I fell into a burning ring of fire…
She walks these hills in a long black veil…
but the strangest man of all spent his time staring at a wall…
59- I was just looking for a good celtic/irish band, actually. What would you say is a good one?
61- My dad used to sing ‘Ring of Fire’ everytime someone mentioned LotR’s Golum at dinner.
60- I wish we had the space for an 88- keyer.
59~ Um, if you want more of a Celtic rock, check out Gaelic Storm. They have a lot of drinking songs though, but nothing that would make your parents too worried. (as in explicit content or whatever; I don’t listen to that.) If you want less of the rock sound maybe check out Maggies Music for a bunch of really good traditional artists. If youre interested in a more historical group, look up the Itinerant Band. They have sort of historic/celtic music, and are good friends of mine. There are gazillions of other bands, artists, you name it. Everything I’ve just mentioned is American.
If you look around, you’ll find a sound that you like and go from there. I suggest buying compilations, because they give you a wide range of groups in a certain style, so it’s a good “diving board”. Have fun.
my dad plays Johnny Cash a lot.
I’ve decided that I’m going to learn to play the concertina. I’ve been thinking about it for a while and I’m going to do it. WHEEE!!!!!
I play the concertina. Do you already have one, or will you have to buy one?
57-excellent point. never thought of it that way. but you dont have to take pwn literally, otherwise it makes no sense. if pwt pwns, does that mean the other muses dont?
62…. “Golum!” *listens for song* *sings along…*
Recent acquisitions:
An Evening WIth John Petrucci And Jordan Rudess
Karl Sanders: Saurian Meditation
The Pogues: Rum Sodomy and The Lash
Skid Row: Best Of
66~ You DO?!?!?! Cool. No, I don’t have one, it’s something i just decided on doing yesterday. I’d ben thinking for a while and I saw one up close, and it threw me over the top. I want one very badly now though. Do you have any advice?
69 – FS! Are you back?
6- What was your favorite song on The Else? I did a song-by-song overview on a previous thread. And are you going to get the CD with the bonus disc? Are you on the wiki? What albums have you heard?
/rabid TMBG fan
49- Really? Me too! That explains why I keep seeing you at practices.
(70) MF – Concertinas come in two basic designs: English and Anglo-German. (That refers to the way they’re made, not the country they’re made in.) Concertinists sometimes call them “hee-hee” and “hee-haw” concertinas, because the English ones make the same note on the in and out strokes, whereas Anglo models make different notes.
I recommend like English “hee-hee” concertinas. They have a wider range than Anglos, and their keyboards were designed by an English physicist named Wheatstone — very logical and elegant. Mine is a tenor, with the same range as a viola. I like having access to the low range and find I don’t need the higher notes that a treble concertina (or a violin) can hit but a tenor can’t.
Concertinas are great fun, a good accompaniment to sea chanteys. Their only disadvantage is that they aren’t very loud. They’re fine for what you might call chamber-folk music, but if you play in a band, even with other acoustic instruments, you’re likely to be drowned out. If you need an instrument that will punch through the others, you might consider a button accordion.
On the other hand, many people prefer Anglo concertinas, and I’m told that they’re the traditional type for Irish music. I’d say go to the music store, try both, and see which one “clicks” with you.
72- You are one too? Flamablamablous!! I didn’t have a favorite, I just thought it would be a good example of their ridiculous stream- of- conciousness lyrics. I have heard:
*heads to itunes* all of them exept “Flood.” CD w/ bonus disc? Haven’t heard about it.
67- Oh yeah! Guess I didn’t get the idea of pwnage at first.
64- Thank you! I’ll look for a cd when I go to the library tonight.
I need recommendations for good bands.
77- Elvenking. Which I will recomend to eveyone untill someone listens to it.
What genera, though?
75- Of course. You’re new. You don’t know me yet. Flood is my favorite album, I think. I’ve only heard Flood, album/CDs from They Got Lost (2001) until now (minus Here Come The ABCs), and the Dial-A-Song compilation. I want to hear them all eventually. You really should check out This Might Be a Wiki. [Snip! –Robert]
In other news, when I downloaded iTunes 7.3 last night, apparently a file didn’t save or something, because I’m told I have to reinstall when I try to open it. And the wiki says Podcast 28A is out, and I’m subscribed and everything! *dies*
I suppose it could be because I didn’t restart the computer. I’ll try that before reinstalling, I suppose. *dies again while waiting for everything to load, which always takes forever*
79- I havn’t instaled 7.3 yet, because it’d tie up the computer and I’m not done yet. Is it any different? In a way I might want?
I restarted the computer, and now it works. I can live again. Things are highlighed in the list formerly known as Source (remember iTunes 6, when it was labeled?) in 3-D blue now. And you can make your list of Playlists disappear now – there’s an arrow at the side of it. At least for me (I have a lot of playlists). That’s all I can see.
78- I’ll try it. And I don’t know, just rock in general. I’ve been listening to the radio as well on iTunes, so that I know what I’m listening to. I just bought an album by Masterplan. It’s pretty good.
Ooh. I like it, from the previews. I’ll have to wait until my mom gets home to buy it, though. Should I get Wyrd or The Winter Wake?
Yay! I found the music board!
I love to sing and started playing guitar a few months ago.
My top three bands are Green Day, My Chemical Romance, and Fall Out Boy. (I like ALL of GD’s stuff, going back to their very first album. I also like some old MCR and FOB.)
I also like:
AFI*
Bowling For Soup*
Evanescence (they’re okay)
Goldfinger
Linkin Park
Nickelback
Papa Roach
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus*
Thirty Seconds To Mars*
Three Days Grace*
The Used*
*For these bands I don’t know very much of their songs, but I like them.
83- Yay! I ♥ Folkmetal. And Elvenking.
I liked the Winter Wake better, personally, but it’s a but heavier in some songs (like the one the album is titled after). But there’s also some more melodic songs on it, like On the Morning Dew.
Wyrd is good too, it’s more folk than metal, where as there’s a bit more metal in TWW (but it’s still rather folk).
I would listen to a song or two of either and pick for yourself, on YouTube or something.
84-3DG is a great band.
ya know, i think i’ll listen to some elvenking now. *goes and listens* hmmmm….metal right? yep. not to bad. i will tolerate them.
33 – well, they’re all really good, but…yeah, you’re right, they don’t mix. you’d also be ashamed to know that i like eminem too.
20 – why? they’re really good…
Is there a thread where you can put parodies of songs that you’ve written? I’ve written a little.
73/74 (Robert)~ Yes, I was thinking of the English concertina, I would NEVER be able to keep track of 2 notes per button. *shudder* I was looking on the internet a few days ago, and all the concertinas I saw seemed to “classed ” on how many buttons they had, from just 18 to 50 some, I think. Gack! What to do?! I heard them first with the sea shanties, I love maritime music, and thought it would be fun to be able to play along. I’m not in a band, but I play music with a lot of my friends, always differing in what instruments to how many people.
What is the difference between a button accordian and a concertina? Besides volume.
Jadestone~ Did you find anything?
90- No, sadly. None of them were listed in the catalog (actually, I’m not sure they even put them in the catalog. None of the cds I tried were there…) and they have a very odd way of cataloging the cds so I can’t find anything. It would make so much more sence if it were alphabetical…
I ran out of time, anyway. I’ll arange so I have more time to look next time I go though.
But for now, to iTunes!
Like them so far. Thanks, JS! I got the one that people said I should get second.
Ricardo Arjona- Minutos
Me dice tu estrategia te arruino,
Ahà te encuentro a momentos
Aunque no sirve de nada.
Minutos,
Como sal en la herida,
Se me pasa la vida,
Gastando el reloj,
Minutos,
Watch the music video—it makes the lyrics make sense. Well, vaguely. And it’s a really depressing song. Almost as depressing as Whiskey Lullaby. Which is good too, though I don’t usually like country. But then again, I don’t usually like Arjona’s music.
Wolfmother
Jimi Hendrix
The Beatles
Eminem (so sue me!)
Death Cab For Cutie
Nirvana
Pink Floyd
Nelly Furtado (see previous parenthesis)
Juanes (is OK… catchy choruses)
The Killers (Thier older songs are better)
Gnarls Barkley
Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
…
69-oh lol. whenever i hear john petrucci, all i can think of are teh youtube videos making fun of him… and you bought a best of cd? be ashamed…. although skid row does’nt really deserve more than a best of.
anyhoo, what thinks ye all of lordi? despite their bring mainstream, very upbeat happy metal i think. i like. something like a present day alice cooper.
83-yayness! if ye think you can handle more metal, check out amorphis. its still folky, but like instead of power metal folky (elvenking), death metal folky. also sonata arctica. and (very folky) korpiklaani. yeah. go check those out.
mmkay. how do you alls like nightwish, within temptation, epica, lacuna coil? right now i’m really into them. basically they all sound like evanescence except a ton better. go listen!
85-you should check out sonata arctica as well…they’re really good, and do helloween covers if that tells you anything.
96- Alright, I’ll try them. At some point. I think that I can handle it, but I’m not sure that I’d be allowed to spend any more of my money on music right now. Besides, I’m listening to Masterplan and Elvenking. I recommend Masterplan, by the way. The lyrics apparently aren’t very original, but it’s really hard to hear them anyway. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that I have the bass turned up. And what’s a helloween cover?
Now I feel like I don’t know many bands, looking at this board. *guilty* Um.. Are there any good, non-swearing bands that you could reccomend? (Please specify that they don’t swear or anything. Or if just an album is okay, please specify that one.) Thanks so much!
The problem with metal is that it’s hard to listen to anything else for a while after listening to it.
98- Green Day I don’t know. The Who only says damn a few times, they’re mostly clean. I can’t tell about the metal bands, and Queen’s alright except for fat bottomed girls, which doesn’t have bad words, it’s just perverted.
Okay. Yeah, if they say that swear it’s fine. But any swear worse than that I mean. Thank you!
Welcome. And I highly recommend The Who. Pinball Wizard’s really good. *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*
I don’t really like rock/heavey metal music. How can you guys listen to it without having like, a nervous breakdown?! It always seems so, umm, depressing.
102 – Heh heh. ‘Kay.
103 – Dunno. If I’m sad I’ll get sad if listening to a sad song (too many “sad”s there), but I guess I’m fine. Is that what you mean?
103- Maybe if I could understand the lyrics… The Who’s not bad, though. My main problem is going back to The Who and Queen after listening to it.
I can never keep up with this thread . . . What can I say, besides, I like [insert obscure folk/world/celtic band name here]?
103- I dunno, I like sad music. But a lot of it’s not really depressing. Elvenking has songs like ‘Rouse Your Dream’ which is rather encouraging, and in Swallowtail it talks about how something (represented by a person)wasn’t as horrible a people were saying, and urned out to actually be a butiful maden and not a witch. That’s not depressing to me, it’s rather encouraging.
You can hear what they say? I can hardly hear any lyrics. And I also sort of like it (the sad part), I don’t have any idea why.
108- Well, once the play count for the songs gets above 50, you have a general idea of what they’re singing about. For some of them I looked up the lyrics online though.
Ah. That makes sense.
it seems i never posted this.
99-this is a bad thing? lol. helloween is a band. very famous one at that. as for masterplan… i actually havent heard them. *looks up*
thats not folk metal… good though.
109-daaaaang. over 50! i like too much different music to get over 50 on any song. my record is like 35. then again, i dont have an ipod, and i just went over 4000 songs on my itunes.
Hm, this thread seems pretty peaceful. Did FS get perma-banned, or something? *Laughs*
I just found out about this type of musikk called symphonic metal. Hm…Well, if you like both opera and heavy metal, then you’d probably like symphonic metal…I really don’t know how to explain it any better. Here are some “symph metal” bands:
Nightwish (I don’t like their new vocalist )
Visions of Atlantis
Echoes of Eternity
Battlelore
112-i really like smphonic metal. in fact, its probably the main kind i like. you can also put lots of words in between symphonic and metal. examples are death, black, power, goth, etc etc. for the opera stuff, nightwish is actually not very good. check out lacuna coil, epica, and within temptation.
98- listen to some rush. their new cd, snakes and arrows is really good. i have a lot of their music and so far no swears except for the song dog years in Test for Echo. it says the b-word. everything else is perfectly fine. and they are definitely not sad. in fact, they are encouraging. listen to Cinderella Man, by rush. you would probably like it.
Has anyone heard Vienna Teng? She’s a singer-songwriter-pianist from California. She used to be a Silicon Valley software engineer but gave it up for music. She’s still in her 20s, I think. Her CD “Dreaming Through the Noise” is good music to edit by.
11- Yeah, in the year since I got an ipod zI’ve gone from no music to being a music adict. My shuffle doesn’t hold a lot of music (one gig) so what I have on there and like I end u[ listening to a lot.
Plus I spend a lot of time with the headphones in my ears, like when I’m on the computer or reading or spacing out.
My highest play count… well, “Life is Short” by Butterfly Boucher is at 115, but that’s the song that automaticly starts when I unplug it/go to the start of the playlist to find a song. The second is “Rouse Your Dream” at 94.
111- I didn’t say that it was folk metal, just that they’re good.
I still need to get an iPod. I currently only have the computer and a 1/2 gig mp3 player.
My highest play count is 45, the song being Behind Blue Eyes. It got that high when I was only listening to The Who. The numbers will probably be crawling now, though.
“I saw you in a magazine/They’re calling you Messiah/They must be living in a _____/They couldn’t be more wronga” What is the blank?
90. The way the buttons are arranged, mainly- Concortina- rows- Accordion- one row.
Our highest playcount is 380.
118-uhh nothing? *listens again*
wait what song is that….. *thinks* penny dreadful!
they must be living in a dream. they couldnt be more wronga.. duh?
Right. May I remind you that the playcount for that is only 7? I got it a day or two ago.
122- See? You can understand what they’re saying.
On one clearly pronounced song. And it’s only there. Actually, I’m starting to understand more, but only where there isn’t much instrumental background.
114 – OK! Thanks!
Soemtimes if I listen to a song I don’t have the lyrics to and I understand 3 words, I get very very very happy.
The Who says f*** in the song Who Are You, but i think that’s the only song with a really bad one.
i have to confess, i’ve actually found myself enjoying *looks around, whispers…* metallica. screaming still bugs me, but there are songs, believe it or not, where metal bands actually sing.
114-yay, rush is my newest musical obsession none of my friends seem to have heard of them though, it’s really sad. (my friends that actually live somewhat nearby i mean)
Oh, well I haven’t heard that one. It’s not in the ultimate collection.
126-you have an obsession w/ Rush? finally, a fellow companion!!!!!!! i have about 7 of their albums. and a few other miscelaneous songs by them. make that 8 albums. (i forgot spirit of radio: greatest hits). oh, and by the way, metallica was “inspired” by rush. go look at the wikipedia article. its very helpful.
114-if you don’t like screaming, don’t listen to cygnus ix by Rush. its the only song that i know of that they Geddy Lee screams in. but its an awesome song.
Rush? Sould I look into them? What few song would you recomend?
As for Metalica, I havn’t really listened to them. I generally stay away from the bands that most people listen to a lot. They don’t seem like they’d be bad though, unlike some other popular ones.
126- Is Who Are You the theme song for CSI? Or is that I different one? How many can there be? But I didn’t hear any bad words, or I can’t remember hearing any. It’s been a while since I watched CSI, though.
I’d like to know if anyone other than me actually uses radio.blog since I’ve been telling everyone to for months. XD It doesn’t work on some computers but if it does it’s really great.
What is it? It sounds strange.
126- …and nothing else matters. I quite adore that song. And Sanitarium. And the entire …And Justice for All album.
Anyone else listen to/hear of The Ark?
Yay for Skyclad! “Djs,djs, pimps and trollops/never mind music, this is bollocks!”
A band that doesn’t swear is Tenacious D.
131) It’s a website where you find lots of music and..listen to it. XD Without necessarily downloading it, so it’s good for sampling purposes. Of course, they have the full song, though. It actually has nothing to do with radios or blogs! XDD
131-i use pandora…
136- Oohh, that’s cool. It is more like radio, but I might use that more in the future.
FS: Tenacious D swears like nothing else. A++++
136-ooooohhhh! cool. i’m using it right now.
129-try cygnus x-1. i’m pretty sure its your type. other classics include Red Barchetta, Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Entre Nous. try those. see if yu like them.
134-yay! you found us. i was beginning to think you would never come. you only posted 2wice.
What I don’t like about rock/heavymetal: It doesn’t make sense; it sort of kills one’s ears; there is no plot to the lyrics… It seems like the lyrics are mostly of hopelesness. Also, I like to listen to music that tells a story. As in, beginning, middle, end. It seems like the music is a jumbled mess of words that make no sense.
If you see it differently, please tell me. I used to be completly opposed to any popular music, but I’m a bit less shocked by it now. So, I’d like to hear what you think.
I dont like heavy metal either, the only songs I have heard of heavy metal cuss, and I hate that. but i agree it doesnt really have a plot or anything.
139- While I’m not a big listener of heavy metal, that is a very generalized point of view. I’m sure there are bands out there that have different types of lyrics. And of course rock is such a broad genre that it’s not always hopeless, there are all sorts of lyrics.
What you said about story driven lyrics reminds me of a band called 12012 (” ichi ni zero ichi ni”/Japanese). The majority of their songs are, I believe, interconnected and focus on a single person. Not being a fan I don’t know the particulars, but something like that seems interesting to me.
the metal you listen to is in the minority, but it’s what gets most radio playing time. Don’t listen to nu-metal, emocore, screamo, and all that crap. Go with power metal (Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica), folk metal (Eluveitie, Elvenking, Korpiklaani, Finntroll, Moonsorrow). Good stories. Check out the song Forever by Kamelot, it’s a variation of a Grieg piece, and V:Havitetty by Moonsorrow. The whole album is just 2 songs long, half an hour each, but it’s fantastic, and it got a great review in the NY times. There is no swearing, it tells a story, and it is incredibly complex, more so than anything else.
hmm. did my post disappear for a reason?
*tries again.*
139-trust me. this is not the way it really is. check out avantasia. an entire metal opera. and here are some lyrics.
We rode the rivers of the Eastern trail,
Deep in the land of the Rus’.
Following the wind in our sails,
And the rhythm of the oars.
No shelter in this hostile land,
Constantly on guard.
Ready to fight and defend
Our ship ‘til the bitter end.
We came under attack,
I received a deadly wound.
A spear was forced into my back
Still I fought on.
When I am dead,
Lay me in a mound.
Raise a stone for all to see
Runes carved to my memory
Now here I lay on the river bank
A long, long way from home
Life is pouring out of me
Soon I will be gone.
I tilt my head to the side
And think of those back home
I see the river rushing by
Like blood runs from my wound.
Here I lie on wet sand,
I will not make it home.
I clinch my sword in my hand,
Say farewell to those I love.
When I am dead,
Lay me in a mound.
Place my weapons by my side
For the journey to Hall up high
When I am dead,
Lay me in a mound.
Raise a stone for all to see
Runes carved to my memory
*****************************************************
you may or may not like the subject, but undeniably a plot there.
That’s Amon Amarth, not Avantasia. But yeah, there’s a good story right there.
139-if you like story lyrics, definitely listen to rush. almost every single song is a story. Xanadu is about a man searching for immortality, REd Barchetta about a kiddo in the future driving on of those outlawed GroundCars!, cygnus x-1 is about someone trying to fly through a black hole, cinderella man is about a philanthropist….and it goes on and on.
Yeah, I guess I’ll see if the library has anything. Thanks for the sugesstions.
Another thing, often that sort of music seems deally discordant, and is pretty much shreds your ears. Now, I know I’m still stuck in the 18th century when it comes to music, but it seems like there is no attention to singing in tune or any effort to make it sound beautiful.
Metal Opera?!?! How does that work? It just seems like a huge contadiction.
GRRRRR THE LIBARARY NEVER EVER HAZ ANY GOOD CDS ARGH
also Death Cab For Cutie rocks my socks
144-i know. im saying in addition.
146: Not at all. Metal is the musical genre most inspired and derived from classical music than any other one.
142-i’ll probably check out some of the folk metal when i have time, it sounds interesting.
146- It depends on which metal you’re looking at. The stuff on the radio seems to never be the more melodic kind and often I don’t like it, but there’s a ton of stuff that is more so and is singing, not just growling. Check out Kamelot, they’re a good example of this.
142-i honestly can’t decide if i like this stuff or not. there will be a song that’s absolutely amazing that i love, and another song that i just think “…eurgh…” and they’ll be by the same artist. or there will be a song where the music is absolutely amazing but the singing will be that horrible growling stuff or it’ll be great music through half of it and then it’ll just flop somehow, or start going too heavy for me, or i won’t like the song but there’ll be one little bit that’s just incredible…
anyway, i think overall i like elvenking best and moonsorrow least (although moonsorrow’s the main one that’s confusing me, with bits i like and bits i don’t)
nothing from eluveitie’s loaded yet though
I’m suddenly listening to Rehab by Amy Winehouse. Dangit, she has horrible teeth.
147 – That’s because librarys were origionally meant for books.
150-how do you feel about ulver? wikipedia says its black metal, but i can barely hear any guitar. very odd.is their stuff all completely trippy?
153- Yay Elvenking! Yeah, some of their songs are more focused on these great melodies and others are heavier. Which were the songs of theirs you liked?
I suppose none of you have heard of the recent Albert Hall event? A bloke called Davitt Moroney (honestly) has been rummaging around in a library in Paris, and he’s unearthed a mass by one Alessandro Striggio, which was famous in the 16th century, but everyone thought it had been lost. It was written in 40 parts. That’s not just 40 singers arranged in a standard SATB chorus. You can hear that anywhere. It’s 40 independent vocal lines, with just one singer on each line, arranged in TEN SATB choirs, all belting along simultaenously, and every singer singing something different. Somehow, it all fits together.
Britain’s own Thomas Tallis heard it and took up the challenge, producing his own 40-part motet, “Spem in alium”, which has happily survived, and gets an occasional airing when 40 singers can get past the fear barrier.
There’s just one thing Tallis conveniently forgot when he decided to go into competition. The last bit of Striggio’s mass, the Ave Maria, bursts into SIXTY parts. Now that’s what I call an ending. It’s all wonderfully impressive. It’s not often we get a new piece of 16th century music, and to get a stunner like the Striggio is causing some serious gloating among the early music fraternity. Just thought you’d like to know.
*gloats*
59-Wow! Interesting! I didn’t hear about that!
159-that must sound amazing. i am amazed just listening to the hunt for red october theme. and thats just a couple of people singing minor.
153: Moonsorrow are very complex, and very difficult to get into. They mix a lot of the growling black metal with acoustic, melodic pagan stuff, and the result is fantastic. I have their latest, Havitetty. It’s 2 songs, half an hour each, for an hour of music. Epic as hell, but really difficult to listen to.
157: Ulver are atmospheric black metal, something like Burzum.
162-i dont find them to be like burzum at all…. burzum has growls and struff…and very prominent guitar. ulver sounds more like trippy satanic electronica. not that i like burzum,
163: Um.. Depends what Burzum. I think Det Som Engang Var is only keyboard atmospheric stuff.
164-s’pose.
anyway, that being the case, i dont like ulver.
I don’t either. But I listen to Burzum, because apparently he’s really good, and I’m a music snob. I’m still trying to get into it.
what kind of stuff does burzum sing?
167-black metal. i can say almost certainly that you would not like it. give it a listen though.
166-he’s also a racist and a murderer…….so dont buy his cd’s! torrent them, if you must.
168: I don’t buy em, I borrowed one form my cousin. Yes, Varg is a moron, but hey, apparently he’s a pretty good musician.
2 – Me too! All too often I judge a CD by its cover.
4 – The Beatles are amazing!
6 – I like TMBG too. Is “Birdhouse in Your Soul” supposed to have any meaning? My friends and I have been trying to figure that song out for months with no success.
7 – I used to play cello and accordion, but now I don’t play anything, or at least I don’t take lessons anymore. I love listening to music, but playing it just isn’t my thing.
15 – Is that the band that sings the song about wanting an alien for Christmas? If so, I’ve heard of them.
17 – You live in Denmark? That’s cool! Good luck pursuing what you want to do even if your parents don’t support you! I’m probably guilty of the same as those people who listen to American hip-hop without understanding it; I listen to a lot of music in other languages and have no idea what the singers are saying. It could be completely obscene and I’d never know.
28 – Wow!
60 – Who am I! Despite being a Christian, I usually don’t care much for Christian music, but I do like that song.
65 – Awesome, good luck with that!
78 – I’d never heard of Elvenking, but I’m listening to it now. I like!
84 – I like “Pain” by Three Days Grace, but I’ve never heard any of their other songs.
96 – Another Sonata Arctica fan? Finally!!! I keep asking my friends and no one has heard of them. What’s your favorite song by them? I like “Fullmoon”. I’m also really into Nightwish at the moment.
103 – Listening to dark/depressing metal when I’m sad always cheers me up. Somehow the extreme sound calms me.Does metal have that effect on anyone else or am I just weird?
109 – If I don’t look up the lyrics I can’t make out a word most of the metal bands I listen to are singing. Maybe that’s why they don’t depress me.
112 – Symphonic metal might just be my new favorite genre. I agree about Nightwish, though; they’re not as good without their old vocalist.
116 – Same with me. I never used to care much about music, but now that I have an iPod I’m addicted!
My highest play count as of now is 190 on iTunes. The song is “Rocker” by Alter Ego.
142 – Unfortunately, the good metal that is not hopeless and tells a story doesn’t get played on the radio, or at least it doesn’t here.
147 – I sympathize! My library’s CD collection is lacking as well.
159 – Is there a recording of that online somewhere? I’d love to hear it!
Has anyone heard of Running Wild or E Nomine? Those are two of my all-time favorite bands. Running Wild is pirate metal, and E Nomine is…well, I’ve heard it described as “Gregorian techno”, but I don’t really know what to call it.
170-symphonic metal. check out epica, and within temptation. also lacuna coil.
“142 – Unfortunately, the good metal that is not hopeless and tells a story doesn’t get played on the radio, or at least it doesn’t here.”
of course not… very very sad it is.
sonata arctica is the sh**. really. i actually really like their cover of over the hills and far away. other favorites are replica, broken, the gun, dream theives, victoria’s secret, wolf and raven, shamandalie**, dont say a word, aint your fairytale. yea. lots.
i can give you a really good list of bands if you liek operatic/symphonic/power metal.
as i said, epica, within temptation, lacuna coil. then avantasia, kamelot, blind guardian, dream evil(thats a maybe.. diffrerent style) edguy, hammerfall and helloween(maybe i’m straying from what you like with those, idk.) anyhoo, the forst 6 you must check out.
wait… about running wild. they’re funny. only pirate metal band in the world. its really only thrash tho, so not so good.
Within Tempation and Lacuna Coil are more goth bands than anything, and not too good. WT last offering was really a pile of bullcrap. But they’re still a lot better than their american counterpart, Evanescence.
170: I love every single SA song. I have everything, every single, every mini cd, except the Paid In Full single, which has a cover of Gary Moore’s Wild Frontier. What do you think about the new album? Lots of people don’t like the style change.
I don’t like Nightwish. At all. It’s a shame, Emppu Vuorinen and Marco Hietala are both really good musicians (just listen to Tarot: so much better!), but with Tarja it’s just a goth band for the emo girls to get depressed to. Forget Tarja, maybe they’ll go a bit more power metal with the new singer.
Anyway, I just downloaded a bunch of female folk singers. Aimee Mann, Patty Griffin, Dar Williams, Fiona Apple. They were listed as similar artists to Ani DiFranco so they should be good.
143- Oh wow, finally read that. Runes To My Memory, yes?
159- Wow. Just… wow. Again, is there a recording anywhere?
170- (17)Yeah, that’s sort of why I look up the lyrica online now if it’s in another language… *vow of silence*
173- We have Aimee Mann I think, from what I recall she’s pretty good.
Looked up Sonota Arctica a while ago, but I can’t buy a cd off itunes because I’m down to… 4.53 on the gift cards. I have more money on my moms acount, but she’s not signed in at the moment. Same with the irish band, Gaelic Storm.
174: It’s called bitlord, and it’s your friend.
huzzah for illegal downloads
actually in Switzerland they’re legal as long as you don’t mass distribuit them.
171 – Thanks for the list! I’ll go check them out now.
177 – So Bittorrent is legal for you? That must be nice! Ever since I read an article about college students getting sued for using Limewire I’ve been a bit paranoid.
Everyone uses downloading programs. You’re not gonna get sued. We all know America is the land of fear and paranoia, but that’s just over the top.
173-i dont like SA’s new album. at least from the 30 sec clips on itunes. well, meh. within temptation is good. just not their most recent album. adn cmon, epica!
175-bitlord
[Profanity regarding bitlord’s relative merits snipped — RS]
yes. use bittorrent(the original client) utorrent, if you like fancy stuff, azureas.
179ayup/ i would kinda like to get sued by the RIAA…twould be fun. i could get the ACLU to give me an awesome lawyer, and hen make them pay me! (the RIAA.)
on the topic of bittorent, do you have a demonoid account? if co, could you just maybe give me an invite code? please? or if not, d’you know where i can find an active torrent for the winter wake?
*way over head with the download linguistics*
Hmm. Maybe. VF installed lime wire, so we have that somewhere or other, but she uninstalled it too.
Anyway. I get tons of gift cards to itunes, so I might as well use those. I’m probably going to get another one soon for some obscure holiday or something I’ve forgotten about.
…Plus I’m at my grandmothers house. I suppose startigicaly, this would be the place to downlod stuff because no one would believe she would want to, plus she doesn’t have an mp3 player. But I’m not that evil.
And I don’t have my conetion cable. (kidding, kidding)
180-hey…. i censored myself…. oh, sorry. wont do it next time. really.
181-first of all, noones really going to sue you. second, its really easy if you are relatively intelligent and do some research. basically all you need to know is that there is something called a torrent. the google is immensely helpful.
Does anyone have a demonoid account? I need one!
Ooh, Ani DiFranco is playing in Zürich on the 15th of October… Only problem is it’s a monday. Ah well. I’ll have to miss a day of school *gasp*.
no piano anymore for me. i broke my arm. hey fridgey, you’ve converted me. i dowloaded the complete wyrd cd. all except for track four. they are pretty sweet. elvenking, that is.
oh, and i got it off limewire. don’t tell, but i’ve been using it for weeks.
185: Which one is track four? As long as you have Moonchariot, you’re alright. Although I prefer The Winter Wake to Wyrd.
I like Joanna Newsom. I’m actually ripping Ys into my computer right now.
186-I’ve been listening to that mildly obsessively (Mildly because i haven’t been on much, and my ipod persists in being lost somewhere, as does my dad’s) Of course there are quite a few songs i’m mildly obsessive about now…it includes most of the music i have. Obsessive, me? anyway. Good song, that.
Limewire is life, as i think i’ve said before. i got it fairly recently, over this summer i think, early on. My dad keeps getting annoyed because it takes me longer to log out now, since it takes forever to shut down, and he claims i’ve put it to start up on login (which i haven’t, but only because i haven’t been bothered).
does bittorrent work on macs? i’ve never tried it. andy obsesses over it, but he would, being a hopeless geek (and you know a geek’s pretty hopeless when i feel secure enough to call them a hopeless geek without fear of being laughed at for hypocrisy). He runs linux though i think. and i know a couple other people who have it but they’ve got windows.
haha, i just found out that hewitt and high tower used brave sir robin for their fav song project for niekamp. that is funny…
Ooh.. I got Lies For the Liars (clean) by The Used and love it.
Thank you Wal-Mart for having edited albums.
Track 4? That would be… The Silk Delema? Yeah, I think so. NOt my favorite, I do’t think you’re piticularly missing anything.
Though I’m not very good with the song titles. No screan on a shuffle.
FOr all you new EK fans, new cd in september! Called The Sythe. Aparently it’s heavier though, more than the winter wake but still with melodies. Yay!!
Hmm. I probably will end up using limewire or torrent or whatver so I can get Heathenreel, because it’s not on itunes and at none of the book stores. Grr.
180 – Nope, no account myself so can’t help with the demonoid. If there’s not an active torrent for Winter Wake on thepiratebay.org , I don’t know where to suggest.
I’ve been listening to Elvenking as I type…it’s addictive!
Oh, and one more thing! Every time I turn my iPod off it only stays off for about two seconds and then comes back on. It even stays on and plays music when I take the headphones out, which I’m pretty sure it is not supposed to do. Any suggestions for how to fix this?
191- I have the same problem. I’m trying to listen to The Who again, but it’s not working…
159- I need to hear that. Has it been performed yet?
170- Birdhouse In Your Soul is just about a nightlight. It has no deep meaning. … You have friends who also listen to TMBG? I envy you so much.
188-course it does! gawd. n00bxor.
183-okay, just checking. i do not. appearantly the regestration opens once a month so i’m checking it every day. if i ever get one ill give you all invite codes.
192-drop it out the window.
191-yea…..really hard album to find. if i could just get dc++working…or, could one of you people who have it maybe upload it? it is called fileSHARING. we have to give back.
*grits teeth* Everyone on the island hates the kind of music I like. IMSTRANDED! jdsalka
192 – Hmm… You could ask someone who works on iTunes, but other than that I don’t know…
Currently obsessed with My Chemical Romance.
192) Hey, me too! It’s really annoying, I can’t turn it off anymore. I have to press pause and go back the the main menu and it shuts off after three minutes or something. It’s such a waste.
Does anyone else here like alternative music?
Recent?
Anyone (well, DDoD or FS, probably) here listen to Kamelot? I want to get a cd, but I don’t know which one.
200: Get either Epica or the recent live album, Cold Winter’s Night. Epica has the best tunes, but the live is a fantastic performance and gathers some of the best of they’re entire career (except for Ghost Opera, the 2007 release, obviously).
Ahh, someone on another site just gave me a download for an Eluveitie cd. Sweetness…
Anyone here like Mars Lasar or F.r.e.u.d.?
They’re both cool.
I’m listening to Joanna Newsom right now. Anyone else like her?
198 – Did you have to change any settings to make it go off after three minutes? I’d rather mine take that long and go off than just stay on until it dies like it does now.
I love Nomos. ♥ I only have one album, sadly, but it’s lovely. Fiddle music is the best.
of course fiddle music is the best!!!!
sorry, last time i tried to post this, museblog died on me.
get epica. but i don’t like live stuff, so i’m biased. (cd live stuff, that is.)
I’ve discovered Afro-Celt Soundsystem, which I really like. I also listen to alot of the albums from the Putumayo…company? Whatever it is, I own about seven of so of their CDs. It’s kind of cool, because the ones I own don’t just feature one artist or group.
On a rather random note, I really need to start practicing my piano and flute more…
My cousins friend might get a chance to play on Austin City Limits in september, so we might go see her. I hope she does, I want to find out who else would be playing though. I think Bob Dylan? And others.
I’m so proud of myself! I managed to listen to a few songs by The Who before reverting to metal. *is happy*
I just downloaded:
Riot discography: fantastic, ripping heavy metal
Dimmu Borgir discography: Actually really good
Rush discography: some of the best drumming ever on the first two albums.
Does Elvenking ever tour? And if so, where, and how expensive? *feels like a total idiot*
213: Wanna see Elvenking, go to Europe. Southern. They’d only come to the states if they were the support act for a bigger band, because there simply isn’t a big enough fan base in the US for this genre.
Oh and if you do wind up going to a metal concert… Bring ear plugs, don’t be delicate, you’re gonna be punched, bashed around and basically have the time of your life.
213- Not here, sadly.
Oh, FS coverd it.
If they did I’d atempt to get there at nearly all costs though. Grr.
…I draw the line at loosing a limb.
(well… unless there’s backstage stuff XD)
215: In metal concerts you have to watch out for the mosh pit. It’s an area up front where everyone’s running around into each other, and it’s contagious. At a certain point the whole crowd is moving, and you can’t move yourself, just go with the flow. It’s amazing, fun, and there’s a fantastic feeling of brotherhood, but just… watch out, ya know?
216- Noted. I think I’d have make an exception to how I don’t like people touching me a lot if I ever get to go to one, but it sounds awesome.
Though ‘at all costs’ would invole somehow convincing my parents to let me go to a concert, and if it’s metal they might not agree, heh… actually, thinking about it I don’t think they know I listen to it, as I do so through my ipod. Hmm.
Although we did win tickets to a Dead concert and they let me and my sister come with when we were younger (10, 12, something). But it wasn’t that intense anyway, and they were there. *sigh* More plotting needed.
Hurray! I’m learning to play piano!
Beware Chopin!
I took piano once… I gave up. I also stopped playing cello. I have no plans to stop playing flute, though.
anyone like flogging molly? its me new obsession. i’ve only heard five songs, but still. celtic metal i beleive? or is it irish? is there a difference? my brain needs kinking out.
217-if my parents even suspected i listened to metal….well, lets not go there. my dad would tolerate, but mommy? my fate would involve kitchen knives and blood….lots of it.
218-that should be interesting. how long do you think you’ll make it? j/k!
fridgey i’ll try to acquire winter wake.
221- I’ve heard they’re good, and akin to the Dropkick Murphys. I started listening to the Dropkick Murphys due to BAGPIPES. Which are just cool.
Why do parents seem to not like metal?
222-something to do wit mental state. its supposed to make us more aggresive.
My parents don’t care if I listen, I have it on my loudspeakers most of the time. I have bad headphones that hurt after an hour or two of listening with them, so I save them for the car.
221- A wise choice
222- I don’t know. My mom would probably be okay with it, actually. She’s pretty weird. Probably because of all those vampire books she reads… remind me to tell the story about her and the kiddie menu at a restaurant sometime.
Listening to samples from the new EK cd online… very cool!
221: It’s folk punk.
222: Ignorance and fear, mainly. My parents took a while to accept metal, now even they appreciate it. I recommend getting them to listen to something progressive or neo-classical. A perfect cd for that is An Evening With John Petrucci And Jordan Rudess. These are two musicians in Dream Theater, a prog metal band out of Berklee school of music, doing an album of jazz improvs. Guitar and piano.
My parents were deadly afriaid that I would become a zombie or something from listning to Rap/Hip-Hop/Pop/Alternative/Rock/Electronic/Dance/R&B/Soul/Reggae/Latino/etc…
They claim that they’re all the same. But I’ve been [secretly] listning to them for years. And what can I say? I’m a zombie! lol
226 – I like dream theater; I stole two albums of theirs from my older brother. Actually he gave them to me. Along with queensyrche and pixies and assorted other stuff.
My parents just think that metal is kind of silly.
There’s not much limit to what I can listen to. I avoid just about everything but Folk and a *teensy* bit of Alternative and Rock if iTunes is correct in dubbing The Pentangle and Josephine Foster Rock and Joanna Newsom Alternative (I think that iTunes is wrong, with the first two at least), but I could listen to almost anything if I so chose. I just don’t choose to.
That choice, unfortunately, does not protect me from the music tastes of the rest of the family. They all have tastes similar to mine, but wide enough to extend to things like The Ramones or DuranDuran. (Spare me.)
jadestone-i just listened to a sample of eluveitie, and me luvs dem! i can’t beleive i didn’t listen to folk metal before now. thanks to fridgey, you, and ddod, i am now fully converted. :idea;
223- Strange.
226- Hmm, that’s kinda silly. My dad used to be in a band, so he’s cool with pretty much everything. My mother never actually listens to the lyrics so if it’s melodic she doesn’t seem to mind. I was wondering why people do.
227- O_O how are they all the same? What? Gah!
231-I have no idea. They claim that they’re all like Rock.
I found two songs for my forms!!! *yayness*
Stronger by Kayne West and Impacto (Remix) by Daddy Yankee feat. Fergie!!!
No. Most of those genres are horrible, nothing like rock. Don’t bother telling them, though.
When is the next Elvenking CD coming out? Or is it?
That is, or is it already out? I just bought Wyrd, I need to use my 4gb for something. When it comes… But I’m finally getting an iPod!!!!!!!!!
230- Glad you like it
234- September
Ahh! It posted to soon!
-ahem-
September 14th. Can’t wait!
Nor can I. I need to fill my new 3 1/2 gbs of space. I’m thinking of new variations on playlists, too.
When did Elvenking start singing about death? Because that’s apparently something that a lot of the songs on The Scythe are about.
23i9- talking about Elvenking, have you ever heard Erlkonig by Schubert/Ernst (Schubert wrote it but Ernst arranged it for violin)? It kicks donkey, frankly.
oooh i was just listening to Matt Karneys new song undeniable- its really good.
*rushes off to itunes so she can buy it*
222-According to the video we saw in heath class, the media now is causing young kids to become promiscous, drug abusers, and violent criminals. I think that’s a load of crap.
I like pretty much any rock. Oldies, Metal, Emo, Alternative, whatever. I don’t really care about genres, i just listen to stuff.
I went to the Family Values Tour on August 4th. It’s set up by Korn and they had Evanescence and Flyleaf, along with some other people. My sister and her friend came and my dad drove us. My dad is fun because he likes all kinds of music and doesn’t have any subliminal messaging paranoia.
239-well, i think thats because the scythe is the tool of the god of death and disease, so the theme is, well, death. thats speculation.
Death is a big part of our, erm, lives, you know. It get us all sooner or later.
But it might not have to be morbid. The death card in Tarro symbolizes more reberth than dieing, they could take that aproach in some songs.
I think that the death is probably where they came up with the name…
244- Hope so… I was going to get a shirt, but then my mom noticed that on the back it said something about the right to kill, so now I’m not allowed to get it. Maybe for their next album… Or some other time. Grr. It would be fine if it just said Elvenking on the front, and even had the symbol, but the words say no. ‘Tis not fair.
Yes! I got my iPod today, and am currently getting stuff onto it.
I’m sorry for not coming on for a while!
I heard a little bit of Misery Business by Paramore and liked it muchly.
I shouldn’t have listened to The Scythe… Now I’ll be listening to it a lot until the 14th, when I’ll listen to it as well as everything else… Why’s metal so addicting?
i got a demonoid account, to my delight. havent been able to use it yet though, because im in new mexico. so it wont give me any invites. i have begun to like deicide, quite a bit, buti have also realized how pitiful my music collection is. i want to add to it. any suggestions? i’ve been hearing about a band called fintrolll, also just got an ensiferum slbum. i like that very musch. is wintersun as good, or better? also, i would like to add that i’m going to an edguy concert. w00t!!!
Do any of the GAPAs remember they Might Be Giants, perhaps?
The sun is a mass
Of incandescent gas
A gigantic nuclear furnace…
I remember the original version of the song, before TMBG covered it. I believe it was sung by the same man who did the voice of Tony the Tiger for Frosted Flakes.
Has anyone heard of Girlyman? I hadn’t heard them in a couple years and then I rediscovered them when they just happened to be playing in Charlottesville while we were on vacation nearby, so my dad and I went to the show, which was great. They’re a lot of fun live, so hopefully my dad will take Sarah and me to go see them in November. I’m going to get a CD this time. (I have a tshirt that they signed. It makes me happy.)
253 – The name sounds familiar…
The only concert I’ve ever been to was Weird Al this year. It was pretty awesome.
251- Really? Will have to look that up sometime. Sounds rahter interesting.
254 ~ You should check out their website. They’re really good, imo.
Anyone ever hear of Klaxons? They’re amazing; check out the video for Golden Skans. It’s sooo cool.
I also like Panic! At the Disco…
woo elvenking
so has anybody heard of E.D.G.? probably not…he’s a rapper. i learned of his existance a couple days ago from hunter, and apparently he’s from snipville. he’s also apparently a very grammatical rapper who insists on periods between his initials. i approve (as much as i can approve of rap…bleeech)
hewitt’s parents are taking him to the rush concert! i’m reeeeally jealous. none of my friends are going besides hewitt and there’s NO WAY my parents will go with me. and i’m definitely not going alone. *sigh* oh well…
2 weeks to the new EK cd!! Yess!
Just importing a Cheiftens cd my friend got me for my b-day (Yeah, it was in January, but I have the party/sleepover in july so we can swim. She couldn’t make it, sadly).
It’s ‘The Best of the Cheiftens,’ so it should be pretty good XD
258-yeah….. emo =
260-yeah. about the scythe….. its been leaked. am in the process of downloading it now. review pending. also, if you want, i can upload the whole album, or a torrent to some upload site.
261- Eh, I’ll probably just use the last of my gift card money on itunes to get it when it comes out. Support the people and all. I can listen to The Sythe and the Divided Heart as I’ve been for the next two weeks, I’ll be really busy so it should go by farely quick.
Do please post a review, though.
261- Dude, get any artist illegally except for EK. If you must get it illegally, send some money to EK directly.
I didn’t see The Scythe on the calendar. *wink wink, nudge nudge*
Has anyone here heard of the House Band? (Other than Jade, she’s heard one of their songs.)
still havent gotten a chance to listen to it (homework and whatnot), but you guys do know that its possible to download a cd before it comes out, and then buy it anyway when it does? it seems a bit stupid, but if you really want to support the artist, in the case of elvenking, it makes sense. plus, you get a nice shiny jewel case. and a real cd.
What do you mean?
Glassboro- I listened to the Elvenking song you sent, Rouse Your Dream… I like it.
251- I like that song! (c+q, thanks!)
I’m so excited…I’m going to see Eddie From Ohio on September fifteenth after the football team! I haven’t seen them live since Falcon Ridge last year since we skipped it this year () Hopefully that will be really fun. And then Girlyman in November. This will be a good fall.
261 – I don’t believe in emo. Emo sounds like Elmo.
268 – Wow, cool! My dad likes Eddie From Ohio, so I know a bit.
265- Well, I’ll buy it off itunes so no shiney jewel case for me (saying that, I remember we have a 150 of them in the basement dad bought from staples. But they’re the thin crappy kind.) If I can’t stand the wait (well… I can’t… I’m trying, but it’s not working) I’ll download it before too maybe.
want a torrent?
okay. at long last, a review. IT is simply amazing. The last song, dominhate is excellent. in fact all of the songs are. only thing i have to say is that there is a weird guy talking at the beginning of (almost) every song. but i suppose that goes with the story somehow. I dont really listen to lyrics. as for the theme of death, i like it, but im more into hardcore metal than you guys, so it might bother you. a great album. go buy it when it comes out. and i have a torrent on request.
NO TORRENT! I really hope that my mom doesn’t mind me buying it, though. Oh well. I liked The Scythe from listening on the Myspace website. Actually, I’ve managed to stop listening!!! XD It’s amazing.
273-why would she?
*twitches* I want a torrent, yes, but I’m trying to make myself wait for it to come out. Building character nd all that. Or something. Ahg. Glad it’s got a very good review though, I’ve lovd both songs they have on their myspace
Look at all the metal fans. I was going to post something about Muse the band but I realize that nothing will detract from The Scythe until October at least.
On a related note, Rouse Your Dream is stuck in my head yet again. Thanks a lot, Glassboro. </sarcasm> I don’t know if I’ll look into Elvenking more. It depends how much money I have after holidays for music.
And someone who posted before but who I am too lazy to look up, nobody’s forgotten about TMBG. I heard an a capella version of Birdhouse In Your Soul the other day… ’twas love.
I would love to give Elvenking money, but it’s that or save up to buy an ipod so i can listen to all their amazing songs all the time. so i’ll probably be downloading it. sorry elvenking.
I’ve been listening to COldplay for the first time since last semester. Man. The Scientist made me think of the ‘Useless’ comic from xkcd. *goes to song lyrics*
278-ah, the good old days. i just put on one of my mixes yesterday and was swept away with memories. good ol’ coldplay.
when does the scythe come out?
Glassboro, were you in elvenking or something? It’s wikipedia entry lists damnagoras as a former member.
JS-tell me the decent coldplay songs, because i’ve been cutting out songs i don’t like that much and i don’t want to just go through and add everything like i usually do
280-he left and came back
so peter arranged mario for the trumpets, as another cheer, and andy got jealous and spent three days figuring out the tetris theme for the saxes/frumpets. wooooooooooohoo tetris.
*twitches* EK Sythe release date for US November 6th.
I’m not really thinking a lot about this, just letting it graze over my mine veryveryvery lightly so I don’t feel it. Ahg.
281- Coldplay, yes, right… Well, I’m one for sad songs myself, but I’ll try to see which ones other than them are good… umm…
By cd, then:
Parachutes
Don’t Panic– is a H2G2 reference, I believe, and it’s okay but you can’t really get the reference from the song, just the title. I just put it on this list because of the reference actually. Heh…
Spies– Sort of erie-sounding, tad creepy.
Yellow– Good song, one of the few you hear on the radio. If you’ve heard it to much it can be very tiresome though.
Everything’s Not Lost Okay song, nice message. I don’t have many favorites on this cd. Actually it’s probably my least favorite one of theirs.
A Rush of Blood to the Head
This cd I do like. I the songs on it better than the ones on the other cds. It’s…rock-y-er than parachutes. Still rather mellow songs, though.
Politik– Nice heavyish drum/guitar intro, and then soft lyrics over guitar, then ocasionally more drum crashes and chords. It’s a surprisingly good combination.
God Put A Smile Upon My Face– I like the melody, and the lyrics though I’m not really religious.
The Scientist– I sent you this song, it’s sad and sweet and I like it a lot. I listen to it when I’m sad sometimes, which doesn’t really make me happy but I feel better in an odd way.
Clocks– The other one you hear on the radio a lot. I like the intro. Again, can get tiresome if you’ve heard it a lot.
A Rush of Blood to the Head– The one the album’s titled after, I like it. …I started posting ssome lyrics here, but then I typed up to much and it took up room so I took them out. Too bad…
Amsterdam– Another sad one, though the end isn’t to deressing. “I stood on the edge, tied to the noose, but you came along, and you cut me loose…”
X&Y
White Shadows
Fix You– Another more heard Coldplay song, but I like it. Yay sad songs…
X&Y– I like these lyrics. “Trying hard to speak and/Fightin’ with my weak hand/Drivin’ to distraction/All part of the plan…”
Speed of Sound– I don’t like this one as much as other people seem to, I hear it played a lot. It’s pretty good though.
A Message– …I may be the only one who really likes this song, as I listened to it when I was int he *exact* mood for hearing it, and I felt the way the song described at the time nearly to a match. So on it goes…
The Hardest Part
Swallowed in the Sea– Sad again, but very good IMO
Running out of time for descriptions. Sorry.
There, 17 instead of the origanal 34. That’s a bit better.
Oh, and Kingdom Come, if you’ve listened to it, was origanally written for Johnny Cash. Later they gave it to Coldplay. Just a random tidbit… once durring Austin City Limits they broke out into Ring of Fire in the middle. hehe.
i’m sorry, but i just hate coldplay. i dont believe they would reference DA. only cool people do that. (and by cool people i of course mean geeks.)
i rapidshared a link to a good torrent for the scythe that is seeded.
http:// rapidshare.com/ files/ 55839917/ Elvenking_The_Scythe.torrent.html
no idea how you can get a decent one if it gets snipped though. otherwise, meh. you’ll have to wait until the sixth. i encourage you not to though.
[I’m allowing it, but not as a link. Anyone who wants to use it just has to copy-and-paste it and remove the spaces. –Robert]
283- I want to know if it’s for iTunes as well, or only the actual cd.
285-thanks!
How exactly should one use the torrent? It’s on my desktop, but what should I open it with? iTunes doesn’t seem to want to add it to the library…
288 – I believe you need to download a torrent thingy like BitTorrent that will read it.. I don’t know – I personally just do a google-blog-search for whatever..
yea. obviosuly since its only like 5 kbs, its only a torrent. you need to get a program like bittorent, utorrent etc… there are tons. utorrent is really small, and good so i reccomend. google it. then open the torrent with utorrent, and it should dl in about and hour. or, opera has a bittorent client built in, but w/e.
i was actually going to upload the whole album, but thats too much work… anyhoo, that torrent has lots of uploaders, so it should go pretty fast.
Wot’s a torrent?
So glassboro, you still know FS?
292-a way to downlaod things taht is is nice because you dont need a server to host the stuff. and yes, where is FS? anyone know?
ddod-i downloaded utorrent and tried to open the torrent, but it said it was “an invlakid torrent file”. what do i do? could you walk me step by step through the process? me needs help!
hmm
thats odd…
really?
umm. you did everything right.. uhh. try to open it again? just double click the .torrent, and it should open in utorrent automatically..what i do is when you save the file, instead of doing save, do open with-utorrent or whatever. but it really shouldnt make a difference. i just dled it again and it opened fine. try downlaoding it again, and opening again.
the only thin gi can think is that if utorrent thinks its not a .torrent, you should check to see if it is a .torrent. basically, just dl the torrent again, and try again.
293- He’s left the blog, sadly.
297-how did i not notice? lol. that sucks…………
eh.
Music I Have Recently Gotten Into:
Guster
Zakarrak
Maroon 5
BoDeans
Boomtown Rats
I was once temporarily deafened by a Bodeans concert in Milwaukee. My ears haven’t been the same since. Be warned…
292- What?
My parents won’t let me get it from the torrent because it’s immoral…
New Emo/Froody/Awesome Bands:
Fall Out Boy
Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
My Chemical Romance
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Gorillaz
I’ve been listening to Feel Good Inc. over and over all day.
Old Bands That Still Pwn:
Led Zep
AC/DC
Nirvana
Mettalica
Pink Floyd
Smashing Pumpkins
302- GORILLAZ ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
301- l thought you were in his band…
302 – My Chem ROCKS.
My english teacher has a Led Zeplin poster on his wall, with some stairway to heaven lyrics.
303-Yes they do. Why’d they kill Noodle?
304-Of Corse
305-Lucky. My English teacher used to be in the Air Force. It’s a hard class.
302-emo does not fit with froody and awesome. and the chili peppers aren’t emo. and you spelled metallica wrong. and it’s really funny how the words are showing up on the screen in random spurts because A-i type fast and B-my comp is being really slow a bajillion songs off limewire because i remembered my pandora account after i added the facebook app about it so i’m adding some jackson browne and dragonforce
emo fits with froody and awesome in music
rhcp are froody and awesome
but yes…i did spell metallica wrong
emo music is not froody and awesome. music that people now call emo simply because it has depressing lyrics can indeed be froody and awesome though
umm…
anyway i like those bands call them emo or not
Okay. Let me say it this way.
Is Glassboro in Elvenking? Y/N
Is FS in Elvenking? Y/N
If both yes, don’t you know each other personally?
311- No, no, and no. Sadly. If they were I would have stalked them to the ends of the earth er, begged them for tickets…? Yeah, that.
Oh, Glassboro was using the name of the lead singer, Damnagoras, on the alter-ego thread. That may be where some confusion is stemming from.
FS is in a different band called (i believe) frigidsymphony, hence his name. you probably shouldn’t trust my memory right now though, as i’m kind of tired, and to lazy to go back into the archives for the post
Oooooooooooh.
HOLY ZARK!!!!!!!!! I E-MAILED SOME CREEPY ROCK BAND WHERE FS WASN’T!!!!!!!!! And it turns out l don’t know Glassboro’s e-mail.
Let’s see… l can’t find a band named after FS, but l do know his last name.
AHEM. In FS’s leaving post he said he was going to be doing stuff with a band, which I’m not sure is the one he was in before. He’d be traveling and such maybe.
316- Why did you do that? Some of us have his email, I think. I do but I don’t use it, as now that he’s left MB he’s out of the going-ons here, and if people leave I don’t think we should contact them unless they want us to.
Then again, if I’m browsing cds and see his name on one I’d probably try to find some way to congratulate him.
283-yay, thank you! huzzah for music
311-lol @ nativity. elvenking may be completely unheard of here, but it’s famous. FS is like 15, and he is NOT famous.
i like the rhcp. they are talented, and creative. i despise emo, and everything it stands for. whiny, bad lyrics and uncreative, untalented, basically just bad instrumentals. bands like MCR are really just in it for the money. they are what we call “posers” mascara on males is NOT cool. whatever it is meant to signify, MCR definitely do not believe.
on a positive note, has everyone here heard of last.fm? its really, really, really good. it takes whatever you’re listening to, and puts it up on their site. then it has free radio, with really really accurate recommendations for music that you will like. everyone h ere needs to try it.
recently downloaded-
korpiklaani disco-excellent folk/viking metal. just awesome.
ensiferum-iron.-i had the first album, this one is amazing as well. viking metal at its best.
finntroll disco-trollish folk/viking metal with lots of black metal influences. amazing. i went to a concert of theirs and it got a giant picture in the times, which never happens for metal, let alone metal no one here listens to.
319-i think fs is 16/17…he said it on the religions thread a while back…anyway, if he’s in a band, cool. good luck to him! i do miss him…no more sarcastic comments and demeaning witticisms…good ‘ol FS.
viking metal sounds like a good genre…i’ll try to download some.
Mmkay, FS sent an email to clear some things up. Says he drops by the blog every now and then to see what people are saying, even if he doesn’t post anymore. We’re probably just adding branches to his bonfire of an ego with all the “Aww, FS is gone…” posts (…even if they’re true…).
He is 16, and play’s guitar in a band called Soul’s Mirror. They’re recording a demo and playing a bunch of gigs, so maybe we’ll see his name somewhere in the future. And he is not in Elvenking, as has been explained previously.
He also says that anyone who knows his email is free to contact him, but I’m not going to post it for the obvious reasons. Also gave a website he can be found at, but I doubt it’d get though so I won’t post that either.
Oh, and DDoD, he want’s a demonoid invite.
umm… how do i go about giving it to him?
any way i could get his email?
322- I dunno, he’s likely online somewhere you could find it. I’m not going to post it here as it wouldn’t get through.
How exactly does demonoid work?
Pwnsome. l found his site! Er, wot’s his name?
I Love Havey metal bands Like Nightwish
and Queen and Lullacry and Metallica and Aerosmith those bands are good and telling
you guys Nightwish is a good band they do
belive in god and suff I don’t know why you
thair bad? Thats not Ture> so think about
I like other music too like Country music scottish bagpipe and Christian metal bands.
Kat
325- Welcome, Kathryn! *pies with bagpipe pie*
*pies every one who is new*
325-Welcome, Kathryn! *pies with oktoberfest pie*
*pies Kathryn with leaf-pie*
Welcome!
Red-tailed HAWK
325-welcome Kathryn! if you like christian metal, i have only one question…do you like RED? i’ll look into Nightwish. btw, how old are you?(age sometimes gives indication of music interests) *pies with caramel chocolate pie*
so fs is in a band. i am going to find their website…
Welcome! But l despise christian metal…
Gr8. A newbie shows up on here right after my post, so l’ll be ignored more than usual.
*Pies Kathryn*
323-well, actually right now it doesnt.. but thats beside the point, as i belive its coming back up again. demonoid is a private bittorent tracker, it tracks people who are seeding torrents. but since its private, you can only get in with an invite. and umm on the site, you can dl lots and lots of different torrents. an invite code is a looong list of hex.
325-dear god! type slower! i cant tell if you’re saying nightwish is good, or bad. it is, btw, mostly bad. if you like that stuff, look into within temptation, epica, and lacuna coil. kk?
324-elias, but i found the site too, a while ago and he wasnt on it.
could a gapa maybe email me his email?
Andrew Bird’s Bowl of Fire. ♥
I didn’t know there was such a thing as Christian metal. But now I do.
Am I the only rock music fan on the MB?
335-nope. rock… lets see i like wolfmother, the white stripes, hendrix, the beatles, tho who, jefferson airplane… not my first choice of music, but i like it.
335-no! rock away! yes, i like it even better than metal. *hears shocked gasps*
also, christian metal? *cracks up*
gapa’s:this is my new email!
335-me loves de rock! my favorite is Rush.
338-yay, spread the rush love!
free will is still my fav, although i’ve switched between a few recently.
Listen to the Casey Neill Trio NOW or I will never forgive you.
339-y’know, you are the only person i know who likes rush. people have no taste…free will is good, but not their best. i’d say that one of their best is la villa strangiata(i can’t spell that).
dude…we need a new thread. alice, listen to the wurzers! they pwn! (heehee ;idea: )
Gapa’s:
Due to recent lack of posts(not to mention we’re over the 300 post limit), and the lack of vivacious spirit, i request a new thread. music must be discussed, and we cannot discuss this subject if we haven’t got a place to discuss this extraordinarily vast and amazing subject. in other words WE NEED A NEW THREAD!
