  1. Squee! Thank you GAPAs! ♥

I have many a twist planned.

Now, I’d just like you all to vote on which envelope’s recipient should be the 1st introduced (and closest to “central”) character.

    1. The one with the hot-pink seal, of course! It’s bad luck, and suffering helps the plot and character development.

      1. Oh good. She’s one of my favorite characters to draw.

I’ll wait until this afternoon to actually make a decision, though.

  2. GAPAs, I was expecting this to be on the visual arts thread- perhaps you could post a notice for other people who thought that too?

Hum, so far 2 votes for Red, a vote for Green, and one for Blue… Of course, the final decision is up to me, but don’t worry, you’ll get to know and love (or possibly hate) them all.

  3. Hmm…

I vote the purple one. I like the color, and if they correspond with the sketches you showed me the way I think they do, en seems like an interesting character.

  4. Okay guys.

Voting will close tomorrow afternoon, at 15:00 blog time.

I’ll be away for 4 weeks, but I’ll try and have 4 sketches done by that time. It doesn’t take much time for me to refine them on the computer, surprisingly.

  5. Nice! I’ve also dropped into the world of webcomics, though mine’re all hand-drawn (for now, at least). Looking forward to seeing where yours goes!

    1. Pun intended?

(as in left out – out of an envelope.)

Oh, and it’s not already opened- it simply has no envelope.

          1. That’s what letters are for: for filling envelopes. If it didn’t have one when it was delivered, it must have been unenveloped before it was sent.

  6. Voting is closed, and judging by the votes, green won by 1 vote.

He’s who I would have gone for had it been a tie, anyway.

      1. Nevertheless, it’s quite annoying when your table in English class is reading a play aloud, and everyone else wants to talk like Yoda but doesn’t know how, so they say things like, “What want you do?” “Money your bags.”

    1. Here’s the text that goes with this:

One of the six letters has arrived-
well, there are more than six letters.
One of the six letters important to us.
A young man reads a letter from an old acquaintance.
It’s the acquaintance that is old- the young man has not known him for a very long time.
This letter is an invitation- a formal weekeng visit at the old acquaintance’s house.
How surprising- neither really likes each other very much.
As business competitors, they’ll have a lot to talk about.

      Plans are formed, destinies set.

  7. Are you going to post the third page I sent you, the one with the letter?

Because it seems like people may have semi forgotten this.

POSOC- I think you’ll find he’s not as nice a character as D c Scratch.

    1. Mr. W. H. Owen… This character sounds shady and mysterious, but at least he is not U. N. Owen… But the house is on an island, oh dear.

    2. I like the perspective of the words, it’s like the letter is opening outwards. Cool effect!

One question: is the spelling error intentional?

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
          1. I had thought until recently that’s how it was spelled normally. *facepalm*

            Biblio- which grammatical errors? *facepalm*

            1. Just one, really (that I noticed, anyway): There was an extra comma. Come to think of it, I found another spelling error, too. Was wekend intentional?
Wait a moment… Since when do people use ‘RSVP’ as a closing? That was almost definitely intentional, but I don’t know why… It’ll be quite interesting to find out!

              1. Well, it stands for “Repondez, S’il Vous Plait”, which means “Respond, if it pleases you. So…

Re: Wekend- My handwriting often squishes e’s up next to other letters, to the point where it’s nearly cursive. If you look, it’s there.

                1. Ah. I actually heard that on MuggleCast, but I got the impression it wasn’t something most people knew. Mr. Verday could be exceptionally knowledgable, though. Is he? And was the extra comma intentional?

                  1. Most people may not know what exactly R.S.V.P. stands for, but I’m pretty sure it’s a commonly used term.

                    1. It’s written at the bottom of invitations and means “please let us know whether or not you are coming.” Some invitations say “Regrets only,” meaning “please let us know if you are not coming; otherwise we’ll assume that you are.”

                    2. Yes, I meant that that was the only way I’ve seen it used, and I didn’t know if people who didn’t know the literal meaning would understand it in such a strange context.

  8. The latest:

Fast forward to May 29th, afternoon. Paul, owning no car, needed to ride with another guest — Amelia Rogue. She’s very quiet, and has an almost Oriental look about her. She obviously knows where his summer house is. Is she Mr. Owen’s friend? Ex-wife? Paul has no idea what she’s doing at what he believes to be a business meeting.

    2 voyages disembark, another begins

    1. Very interesting so far, there’s a definite And Then There Were None feel to it. I also noticed that Paul Verdan has got a green look going, while Amelia Rogue is reddish. Verdan sounds like Vert, which is french for Green, and Rogue is very similar to Rouge, which is French for red. I’m assuming this was intentional?

        1. It doesn’t look especially hot pink to me, but I agree with you on that expectation.

And yes. Definitely that And Then There Were None feeling.

  9. I’ve not read much by Agatha Christie, but this definitely has that sort of feel about it. I rather like this so far, Enceladus, and the art style seems to match the vibe exceedingly well. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

  10. Next panel.

    Enceladus panel, 4 August 2011

At the same time, (but not quite),

A letter is crushed in the hands of a university professor. This is odd, seeing as it is a invitation from his dean for a weekend visit. The professor, Alexander Mariner, clearly does not favor his dean.

But he plans to go anyway. Out of spite, perhaps?

      1. Thank you! That really means a lot to me. This is a huge experiment on whether I can draw characters reliably and recognizably. Because I have never been able to draw detailed people consistently.

        1. Same here. As far as faces are concerned, it’ll never be that same face again. Ever. I really wonder how manga artists manage to draw like they do.

  11. Both grammatical errors so far have been extra commas. Interesting.
Mariner? I get the feeling he’s also very formal, as is Amelia Rogue. I wonder if all the letter recepients are…

      1. In post 20, it’s between the words ‘business’ and ‘and.’ In post 25, it’s between ‘time’ and ‘but.’ Or it could have been kept and the parentheses left out (and yes, I know this is a fragment, but it sounds awkward otherwise). You can’t have both, though.

        Pie 0

            1. *Compund predicate, not compound verb. I can’t believe I said that; I did know the difference; I just mistyped it somehow…

              Pie 0
              Squid 0
              1. It’s not a compound predicate. The predicate actually only has one verb that’s doing anything–‘hope’. The other two, ‘to discuss’ and ‘[to] turn’, are objects of ‘hope’.

                Pie 0
                Squid 0
        1. Oh…okay. Hmm, I would’ve thought that the comma in post 20 would be correct. Post 25’s extra comma/parenthesis is a little awkward, though. Oh well, minor details.

I like the way that you showed the scrunched-up letter, Enceladus. Actually, I just really like this page in general. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next! I think that having different colors for different people is…interesting. In a good way. Now that’s we’ve seen green, red, and blue, I’m extremely curious about purple and yellow. So, yeah. Awesome job!

  12. Enceladus, I love your style, and especially your artistic style! It looks amazing and adds such an aura of mystery/secrets.

About the characters; we have Verdun=verdi=green, Rogue=rouge=red, and Mariner=ocean=blue. I can’t wait to see the names of the people who get the yellow, purple, and opened letters.

    1. I agree. Plus, the color-themed people are sort of reminiscent of the characters from Clue. Very mysteryish.

  13. Sorry to nag, GAPAs, but I’ve sent you another page.

Sorry if I’m being annoying, it’s just I’m leaving for Hawai’i tomorrow, and my grandparents’ internet connection is… weak.

  14. Panel 5 and its text:

    Simultaneously, (but not quite)
An old nurse wipes a tear from her eye — Lilian Page
A mad violinist is hired — James Rosin
A sharpshooter shoots an invitation, yet still plans to go — Joan Y. Donahue

All these characters shall meet each other
And they shall never escape each other
    Or their Destinies.
    ~~~~~~~~
    The title of the webcomic is now “Destinies”
