Patience, Please

Today I randomly decided to paint a picture using only cosmetic products and applicators. Don’t ask me why. Unfortunately no one in family is that big on makeup; I went through all the bathroom cabinets and my drawers and located the following: several lip glosses, a box of hypoallergenic eye shadow, and a stage makeup kit from a play I was in three years ago, which contained some creamy stuff- foundation, maybe? not sure what it’s called- an eye pencil, a small sponge, and a makeup brush. I wished I had some eyeliner or mascara for outlines, but the pencil looked better than either of those would’ve. Mascara is probably too gloopy to work. Everything was shades of tan, brown, pink, and red, so I drew a person, just a random girl. I used mostly the foundation-stuff, and I think I like using it better than real paint- you can smear it and blend it and scrape it off if you mess up and it is COOL. I used the eye shadow mostly for some of the darker and lighter shades I needed, and a little lip gloss for the background. It turned out quite well, I think! It looks sort of like oil pastels. I’m just concerned if it will dry properly. I want to scan it without smearing…   Â
I once painted a cat entirely out of frosting scraped off of cupcakes. I think I had one hot pink and one white cupcake, so the cat was various shades of pink… I had to cover the scanner with plastic wrap to scan it in.

That sounds really cool!
If it refuses to dry, there’s a fixative spray you can get that keeps art from smudging. I’ve seen it used for pastels and things, so it could work for you.
Today I discovered that someone has been putting up little drawings in the lounge of the dorm where I live (the SF/F club’s house). I decided to make a few of my own so I drew:
– a person with standing up, curly hair.
– a goblin-y thing sitting with their chin on their knees
– a girl sitting in a tree with a hand reaching out of a hole in the tree and almost, but not quite, grabbing her.
I plan on using no. 3 for a story and probably also for a bigger picture. Yay!

Hey everyone! I have a question for all of you.
I’m taking Ceramics II this semester in college. I loveloveloved ceramics last year, and I picked it up really quickly, which was exciting and encouraged me to work really hard. This semester, I’ve been continuing to build skills, but I’ve reached the point where I can make all of the main ceramic forms on the wheel (mugs/cylinders, bowls, teapots, 12+ inch cylinders, pitchers, etc.), and I really should be pushing myself more to explore form and technique. I’ve just been feeling sort of overwhelmed by the assignments in ceramics and my other classes lately, so I haven’t been giving myself the mental space to think creatively and push myself to explore more ways to form, surface, and work with the clay.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this? Or, aside from just getting more sleep and giving myself more time in the studio (which I really try to do, but it’s hard because I just have so much going on all the time), what sorts of things I can do to break away from making boring forms all the time? I guess it’s not really fair to ask how I can be more creative, but maybe just different things I can think about, or prompts for pieces, etc.

Because I like poetry, maybe try to base your ceramics of poems? Or works of music or something. Would looking at other people’s ceramics help? I know that there is some posted on Deviant Art.
Thanks oxlin! Poetry is a good idea–I’ll definitely start reading more of that for ideas. I’ve also been looking through ceramics books, which has been helping, too. I think one of my biggest problems is that I like making simple, functional forms that are comfortable to use, so elaborating on surfacing and intricate forms isn’t as appealing to me. But I’ve found some examples of simple but interesting forms in some books I’ve been reading, which I’m excited to work on.

I was just poking around my folders and found these files, among others, in a suspicious-looking subfolder titled “HPB’s”, and thought I’d send them over in case anyone on MB wanted to see them, as they clearly aren’t doing anything useful on my hard drive. They are timestamped as being created in 2008… The original premise of the “circus” one was something along the lines of “HPBs take over the circus, leave no survivors”, but it was never finished and at this point, it’s not going to be… but if anyone is interested in finishing it for me, that’d be good too!

No, but she (the person shadowfire drew) is a character in a webcomic I am a big fan of–Homestuck!

I’m very proud of how this picture turned out. It’s two photographs I took of some of my National Geographic maps of the arctic (with my compass strategically positioned on one of them), some Photoshop blending, and, of course, a quote I found and enjoyed:
I am now in possession of a tablet and therefore may be sending in some more art soon. Including a rather silly crossover thing.

The people I spent July 4th with will know that my friend on another site created humanized LHC and Tevatron characters named Serenity and Tevan respectively, and that I created a RHIC character named Erhica to hang out with them. Here, Erhica and Tevan lift Serenity on their shoulders to celebrate her Higgs discovery:

So this is kind of way late, but last year I extended the artwork on cards from Magic: The Gathering by painting around the picture already on it. I was looking through them today and I think I might send some in? I think I got a lot better with painting, and it was an interesting experiment in trying different styles depending on the artist of the original card.
Also I seem to do art much better on a really tiny scale… not sure I quite understand but I’ll go with it!

I made two comics! The quality is just awful and I’m a horrible computer-drawing-person. But I was pretty proud of the first one, considering it’s the first computer-comic I ever did.
And a while back I drew some of my friends. And Homestuck art. Aaand I drew a dragon! I have not drawn dragons since the fourth grade but man, they’re so much fun.
Can we use this thread to talk about visual artists we like? I’d just like to say that I really, really like Ursula Vernon’s artwork. It’s whimsical, frequently adorable, and always interesting. So much of it has the sense of a greater world behind them. Also, I just finished her webcomic Digger, and really liked that too.
