Theatrical Events in Washington, D.C.

Attention, D.C.-area Musers! A couple of Muselike events are coming to town soon:

– “Spamalot” at the National Theater, December 11 through January 6

– The Washington Revels at the Lisner Auditorium (George Washington University), December 8-9 and 14-16.

If you’d like to organize a MuseBlog expedition to either event, please have your parents get in touch with the Administrators at gapa @ musefanpage.com.

P.S. “The Golden Compass” opens in movie theaters on December 7. I hope it’s good; the trailer looks great.

You can find out more about the Revels at www. revelsdc.org/ events.html

  1. Purple Panda says:

Ooh, Spamalot was just in Pittsburgh! I didn’t get to see it, though.

I’ll try to talk my parents into taking us down over winter break, but I’m not optimistic.

  4. Prarilius Canix, taking a break from NaNoWriMo says:

0- According to reviews, they took out most of Pullman’s theological stuff because it was too controversial.
Oh, well. At least they didn’t make an obvious hash of it like SOME.

  5. Lillers says:

I saw Spamalot in NYC on Broadway with my family when I went with my advanced choral group to sing in CARNEGIE HALL (!!! Yes, we did). I liked it, but I think my childish dad liked it more. :)

I hope The Golden Compass is good! I hate it when they butcher books in movies. And TGC is such a fantastic book…

  7. Cat's Meow says:

4-Yeah, I heard about that, but I was hoping they wouldn’t do it too much…it’s such a huge part of the later books, you know?

    6-Agreed

Oh yeah, and they’re moving the last 3 chapters of TGC to the start of TSK. So basically, everything that happens after the bear conflict. (That’s not too much of a spoiler, right?)

  8. dark duke of darkness says:

his dark materials is brilliant. but apperantly pullman is satisfied, and so yeah. and its the same people who did lotr, and they seem to be pouring a ton of resources into it. so i can deal with the no specific god references.

8- I suppose I can, as well. Idk if I’ll see it, tho. Seems a little overdramatic, from the trailer.

  14. Glassboro says:

    You all might want to know that the producers have ripped almost all religion out of the movie, with just a few tiny tiny tiny things that you won’t catch anyway. It’s no longer a book about God, but a generic good vs. evil story. :'( >.&/lt;

  20. Miss Swann who can't WAIT for christmas says:

GAH, they’re thinking of delaying the release date. u know how they filmed the college in the beginning at a roman catholic church? well, now the roman catholic people are being offended, because apparently someone read the books and are thinking CONSPIRACY THEROY. I am sooo mad. If they delay it, i will die.

  23. Quintessentia says:

I’m hesitant about going to see The Golden Compass. I loved and revered His Dark Materials so much that it would break my heart to see it any way other than the way it is in my head. I wouldn’t let my brother read The Golden Compass until he was twelve (I told him he was too young for the content) because the books were so special to me. I hated it when he read them, because he tried to talk to me about them and he said Don’t I look like Will and I wanted to hit him so he would go away and not make it so painful.

    I don’t know why.

  26. kricket says:

I’m scared and happy for the Golden Compass to come out. I’m going to get some of my friends to go with me to see it… I have to reread the books before I go see it though. I really hope they don’t kill it. Wouldn’t that be cool if a group of Musers could get together and see it together? :D Anyways, I’m not going to be able to make it to see Spamalot, I can tell that much right now. Gah. Oh well.

23- I know what you mean. It’s weird. For the longest time I felt that way about Opal reading Chrestomanci.

I’m over it all now. Now I just babble eagerly about all my favorite books to anyone who will listen.

  30. Purple Panda says:

I’m a bit worried about watching the movie, too. I just really don’t want them to butcher it, which happens way too often, so I kind of stopped watching movies of books I like. Maybe I’ll watch this one, though. I don’t know…

GAPAs, can you please make a new movies thread, or link me to the current one if there is one? I saw The Golden Compass last night and I want to talk about it, and there’s a bunch of other movies coming out/that are out, so people will probably want to talk about those too.

  33. Raynpho the Manifold (I am not a dornick) says:

Ooh, TGC is amazing- the book at least 0.0
The movie looks pretty good so far, other than minor inconsistencies (which are just bothersome) and the whole religion-thing… but I’ve been waiting far to long for it to come out to care too much ;)

  34. Purple Panda says:

Chances of anyone from my family coming are now very very very very slim. Maybe I’ll walk!!

…Unless someone wants to come to Pittsburgh, which did I mention has the Bodies and Chihuly and brand-new Dinosaur exhibit? (Which, by the way, they’ve spent about 3 years on and is apparently fantastic). And, it’s really close to Muse, PA.

    Yes, I like advertising :D

The Revels are over now, but the Folger is performing a medieval miracle play, the anonymous “Second Shepherd’s Play.” That sounds good. I’m also going to try to rope some friends into seeing “Spamalot.”
