My favorite musicals are The Secret Garden and The Sound of Music. Actually, quite interestingly I just finished watching Hairspray (the movie), because THF wanted our grandma to see it before she left. She (THF) has become obsessed with it lately. I also really like Peter Pan, but I like the story much better than the music.
2 – I love almost all of those. I haven’t seen Pippen, but I love the soundtrack, and I haven’t seen Damn Yankees (though I know a long time ago my school performed it as Darn Yankees). I don’t really like Annie, though.
7 – I saw Cats a few years ago, and didn’t like it that much, except for a few parts, which were great.
Spamalot is a Broadway musical of the Holy Grail. I have never seen it, but my mom has, and she bought the soundtrack and a t-shirt for me!
I need to see Wicked and Hairspray.
I have read Wicked and I might get to see it on spring break.
I want to see Rent. I’ve seen the movie.
I saw Footloose when the local theater did it and it was amazing!
I am going to see Wicked on Friday at the Fox Theater!!!!! I’m sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited. The phantom when it was there was awesome!!!!! When I was in New York I learned a dance from Spamalot, it was soooooooooo fun!!!!!! I have never seen a musical that I havnt liked. We saw the lion king at the fox twice and it was extrordinary!!!!! *dreams*
7- I liked it… even if it was a little *hem* strange…
Let’s see… I’ve seen Wicked, Spamalot, Lion King, Cats, Aida… I think that’s it.
I’ve seen the movie version of Rent… And several others. And I really, really, really want to see Les Mis.

La Mort, qui a 42 spdzk points(formerly RotH) says:
I’ve listened to “Wicked” songs and enjoys them muchly. My sister has the book but says im “too young for it”. GRRRRRRRRRR.
I’ve seen The Phantom Of The Opera ON BROADWAY and me likes the falling chandelier part. My sister’s also seen “Les Miserables” and “AvenueQ” tho not on broadway. hee hee. (but she saw Phantom too).
23- It’s been years since I watched, but Istillhave the song stuck in my head……
Oh, i saw phantom the other night on TV!!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MASQUERADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“When you’re a Jet, you’re a Jet all the way
From your first cigarette to your last dyin’ day…
When you’re a Jet if the spit hits the fan
You’ve got brothers around
You’re a family man!
You’re never alone
You’re never disconnected…
You’re home with your own
When company’s expected,
You’re well-protected!
Then you are set with a Capital J
Which you’ll never forget ’till they cart you away,
When you’re a Jet you stay a Jet!”
24- You probably are too young for it. It’s a bit risque in parts one and two, and it gets really raunchy in part three. I didn’t read past that because it sort of put me off.
I started reading wicked, but i stopped because it got SO raunchy (thats an oldish word) I really want to see the musical.
MUSICALS I LOVE BUT HAVENT SEEN
Jersey boys
Wicked
spamalot
etc.
30-“Risque” is when something is just barely bordering on not being pr0n, and “Raunchy” is downright dirty.
Like, the musical Caberet is risque, because the ladies aren’t quite naked. And Lil’ John is raunchy, because of all his mention of h*** and w**** and, ahem, body parts.
“risque” and “raunchy” mean kind of…adult. I read Wicked, but I agree that some parts were kind of a bit much. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (by the same guy) was not quite as “bad”, but (in my opinion) I liked the plot of Wicked more.
I’ve seen some movies and stuff of musicals, and local productions. They seem fun to be in.
21- *is jealous*
34- Agreed. All of his books are kind of… wierd. Wicked’s definitely the, uh, raunchy-est of all of them (though Son of a Witch is close).
I dont really enjoy broadway musicals. Ive been to the musical ‘Cats”, and i didnt like it at all. They are so cheesy.my grammas taken me to 2 musicals, and i hated them both. Boo musicals!
I LOVE BROADWAY MUSICALS!!!!!
i’ve been mingleing around while listening to a random playlist of musicals on my ipod, right now it’s the 25th annual putnam county spelling bee!
ok looking above i have to say they’re not all stinky or cheesy.
THEY”RE FLIPPING AWESOME!
ok yes i admit some are sucky but alot are good!
most are good
i love spamalot!
30 (NAPOI)- If you don’t know what those words mean, you are definitely too young for Wicked.
I enjoy musicals unabashedly, although there are plenty I still have to see. My favorite is probably Spamalot; I’m still bitter at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee for not picking me to go on stage.
♫”The hills are alive with the sound of music,
With songs they have sung for a thousand years
The hills fill my heart with the sound of music,
My heart wants to sing every song it hears
My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds
that rise from the lake to the trees
My heart wants to sigh like a chime that flies
from a church on a breeze
To laugh like a brook when it trips and falls over
stones on its way
To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray
I go to the hills when my heart is lonely,
I know I will hear what I’ve heard before
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music,
And I’ll sing once more!”♫
The 7 deadly virtues, those nasty little traps

Those 7 deadly virtues were meant for other chaps
Who live a life of failure and ennui
Take courage, a noble sport
An invitation to state of rigamort
And purity, a noble yen

I find humility means to be hurt
It’s not the earth the meek inherit, it’s the dirt
Honesty is fatal, it should be taboo
Diligence a fate I would hate
If charity means giving, I give it to you
And fidelity is only for your mate. Ha!

OH MY GOSH!!! WE SAW WICKED LAST NIGHT AND IT WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
GOOD!!!! Sorry about that, but I have yet another obsession now. I bought an awesome green v-neck shirt that says defy gravity on it, you know like the song? YAY!!!!
53 – I have to agree that the movie of Hairspray was much worse than the play, though I didn’t mind the movie. By the way I saw all these in Chicago, not NYC.
speller (54): I haven’t seen any version of Hairspray other than the musical, but I have heard both soundtracks (of the musical, and movie) and I prefer the movie. I think the movie has much better singing, and the style is more accurate. My mother (who has three students in the movie, and is a voice teacher/singer person) agrees.
I’ve seen… (on tour.) Mama Mia, Les Miserables, Wicked, Spamalot and Avenue Q.
I think that is all.
I’ve been in plenty of musicals, one of my favorites beeing Little Shop of Horrors, as well as seen plenty of musicals at other schools/community theatres.
50- Yes, basically.
53- I’ve seen it thrice, and I live in Wyoming. The nearest (decent) theater is in, like, Denver.
Our Grand Exalted Choir Teacher of the Nasty Sandwiches has her middle schoolers put on a musical every year… *cringe* Think a bunch of scrawny eleven- and twelve-year-olds (because no self-respecting eigth grader in our lovely school would be caught dead on a stage) standing around *attempting* to sing. Plus bad microphone feedback. And bad props. *cringes again*
Still, I do attend them like the good older sister I am
55 – I actually prefer the musical based on the plot, which I found more interesting in the play. Plus, I loved the song “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now”, which was cut for the movie. I don’t remember the movie well enough to judge on the musicality.
Our middle school does a musical every year. It actually normally turns out quite well, because so many kids (1/3 of the school or so) participate. I’m not so sure about this year, because we’re doing Annie, which isn’t the best show in the first place, but one of our Annies can’t sing but can act well and the other is a good singer half the time and a terrible singer the other half and an iffy actor. (We double cast major parts.)
Ive seen Modern Millie, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular (this might not count as Broadway, but oh well), The Lion King, and yesterday Wicked (amazing) we got to have a Q&A with the cast–I got to meet the peraon who plays professor Sprout in the Harry Potter movies..It was awsome
I loooooooooooooooooooove U muse! I am so glad that someone finally added a spot for theater nerd-geeks like me to blog! =)
I would tell you all the plays I’ve seen but there are too many. Favorites include: Suessical (which I’m the cat in the hat in right now!), Curtains, Legally Blonde, Wizard of Oz, Pirates of Penzance (alternate lyrics in next post). If there are any more Cat-in-the-hats out there, I would love to share tips with them (well, actually, it’s me who really needs help!).
He Who Must Not Be Named, the composer-ish person of Cats and Phantom… oh the horrors… Phantom of the Opera *shudders* does not seem to understand the concept of musical theatre. Well, actually, it’s just that it’s bad. Cats is okay, though, I guess.
Favorite musicals (that I can think of right now):
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (the only one I’ve seen on Broadway)
Into the Woods
The Secret Garden
Hairspray
Seussical
Those ones are the top 5, probably, but there are many others that I love.
Favorite musicals:
Legally Blonde
Wicked
Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (well, not quite a musical…)
Once More, With Feeling (Google it. You’ll see what I mean)
I love Phantom of the Opera! It’s so moving, even though the plot could be strengthened a little.
Wicked remains my favorite Broadway musical. I got shivers when I saw it. I absolutely love Elphaba’s song, ‘Defying Gravity’. ‘For Good’ is a great one as well. If you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s a really great show.
Love Wicked! I have the soundtrack on my MP3 player. Elphaba is breathy in the beginning, as Galinda is really nasal. I’m going to point out all the foreshadowings in the songs in order!
SPOILER.
The Wizard and I
“My whole life will change”~ She will become “the wicked witch of the west.”
“A celebreation throughout Oz, that’s all to do with me!”~ See “No one Mourns the Wicked.”
“And i’ll stand there with the Wizard feeling things I’ve never felt.” ~ She gets SUPER angry at the Wizard.
“When people see me the will scream.”~ Imagine someone who sees the Wicked Witch of the West.
Defying Gravity
“And nobody, in all of Oz, no Wizard that there is or was, is ever gonnas bring me down!!!”~ Dorothy is from Kansas, not Oz.
“Wicked” makes clever allusions to songs in the “Wizard of Oz” movie, too. For example, “no Wizard that there is or was”: “if ever, oh ever a whiz there was, / The Wizard of Oz is one because…”
Wicked would have to be one of my favorite musicals. Probably the allusions to the Wizard of Oz are one of the reasons I like it, since I was in the chorus in my school production of Wizard of Oz in sixth grade.
71 – He didn’t write the plot, only the music and stuff. The Phantom of the Opera was originally a book. I think. Well, if it wasn’t originally a book, it definitely was a book before it was a musical. The plot is okay, it’s mostly the music that I hate.
We did The Wiz at my school a few years ago. It was… interesting. Especially since we have practically no black people at our school, and it was written for an all-black cast. Hehe.
Legally Blonde: The Musical is hilarious, stupid, plotless, and brilliant all at the same time. The plot obviously didn’t come originally from the musical, but it’s interesting. I like Legally Blonde (I mean the musical), but I think that it’s awfully strange.
O.M.G. I had NO idea that there was a Broadway musicals thread. I am completly and totlay OBSESSED with Wicked!!!! I saw it this past April. Is there anyone who will obsess with me about Wickid? None of my friends have seen it so I’ve got no one to talk (and obsess) about it with.
OMG I LOVE WICKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
82- Who doesn’t?! And I hear you about having no one to talk about it with – I live in a reeeeally little town in Wyoming and the only other person I know who is remotely interested in this sort of thing has never seen it (understandable, since the nearest decent theater is 6 hours drive from where we live…)
Anyway, yes, I am obsessed too (but then I’m obsessed with lots of things). I’ve seen it thrice, and it STILL makes me cry during Defying Gravity and For Good.
Wow. No one has posted here in a looooong time. Helllllooooo? Any one out there? Well anyways, on the Broadway musicals topic I LOST MY “WICKED” SOUNDTRACK!!!!! But I think I left it at my friend’s house. I know I left it at my friend’s house. But she’s reeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaalllllllyyyyyyy messy. But maybe she found it and set it aside to give to me at school!!!!! But she also might have totally lost it , or worse: it broke!!!! *pant, catches breath* I need to stop now. *runs off to another thread*
AN ITALIAN STRAW HAT MUSICAL SPOILERS.
I just saw the second worrld showing of “An Italian Straw Hat: A Vaudeville”. It was HILARIOUS!!!! There was this shizophrenic Felix, and three of the characters were listening to him because they thought he was a judge. They were following the conversation.
(Felix) ARE YOU FOLLOWING ME?!
(Helen) Yes, we are following you!
It was great! Then there was the bicont, who spoke with a strange accent, and he thought he was talking to an Italian opera singer, but that Italian opera singer was really the main character, Fadley. And the conversation was all muddled up because of the bicount’s accent, and while the bicount was talking about singing, Fadley thought that he was talking about… censored stuff that we didn’t see onstage. Actually, the person who played Fadley had a medical emergency so another guy had to fill in for him, and in TWO DAYS rehearsel, he pulled it off. He carried around a hand script, but they somehow worked it in as a prop. And my to other favorite characters besides Felix (he rocked) where the stagehands. They put in the scenery in full view, but they made it funny! 10 out of 10.
Saw Hairspray! I loved it!
And I have to say, that was the only time I will ever consider Zac Efron hot, but he was. Very, verrry hot.
“Without Love” is such a great song. i love it, too.
This thread is still open? May I suggest a new one?
70 – Once More With Feeling? Nice. Although, strictly speaking, it’s not a Broadway musical…
Anyways, my favorite musical these days is In the Heights. Anyone else seen it? It sort of unintentionally makes fun of hip-hop. It’s a hip-hop musical, but instead of being terrible like most hip-hop, the lyrics are genius. And they make you wonder why other hip-hop artists don’t reference LoTR or Cole Porter in their songs.
I saw it in Broadway on Chicago… Nearly as good. I love seeing Broadway musicals on Broadway, though. It’s amazing. I’ve cried during two of the three I’ve seen…
Me too! My uncle had a former student performing in it (Yes, this was on Broadway, in NY) so we got really good seats, near the front, and right in the middle. ‘Twas amazing.
I saw The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, and random musicals at my school and my sister’s. I have no idea how many of them actually are “broadway”, but…yeah.
How about Chess? *just got the original cast recording has been listening to it lot lately* Everybody’s playing the game, but nobody’s rules are the same. Nobody’s on nobody’s side…
Dearly beloved, we gather here to say our goodbyes. Here she lies! No one knew her worth, the late great daughter of Mother Earth. On this night that we celebrate the birth…. in that little town of Bethlehem, we raise our glass, you bet your a** to… la vie… boheme!
To days of inspiration,
Playing hookey, making something
Out of nothing, the need
To express-
To communicate,
To going against the grain,
Going insane,
Going mad
To loving tension, no pension
To more than one dimension,
To starving for attention,
Hating convention, hating pretension,
Not to mention of course,
Hating dear old mom and dad,
To riding your bike
Midday past the three piece suits-
To fruits- To no absolutes-
To Absolut- To choice-
To the Village Voice-
To any passing fad,
To being an us- For once-
Instead of them-
La Vie Boheme!
I recently saw a broadway tour version of In The Heights. It was fairly good, I thought – the dancing was amazing, singing was capable but nothing special, and the plot varied between being cliched and having shocking revelations that actually didn’t matter to the overall plot.
Has anyone heard of the sequel to Phantom of the Opera? It’s called ‘Love Never Dies’, and it’s on the London stage right now. My friend Julia saw it when she was on a trip with her family, and said it was superb.
Normally, I’m not a big fan of sequels to big productions, but I checked out some of the music and it’s pretty good. The show is expected to be on Broadway sometime very soon.
For any musical fanatics wanting to know more , I’d check out ‘Til I Hear You Sing’. It’s a beautiful song, performed by the Phantom (played by Ramin Karimloo).

Yay! Thank you GAPAs!
I am a huge fan of Broadway musicals. My school gives chorus members the opportunity to see them in Chicago, which is really fun.
Oh gosh. *listing*
Damn Yankees
Pippen
Sweet Charity
The Sound of Music
Guys and Dolls
Westside Story
Kiss Me Kate
Annie
And so much more! *spirit hands*
My favorite musicals are The Secret Garden and The Sound of Music. I need to read Wicked…
I’ve never seen a musical…:(
You poor, deprived children! *simper*
I’ve only seen a few, sadly, but can recall the ones I’ve seen.
What do you all think of “Cats?”
My favorite musicals are the Sound of Music and Westside story. But that’s probably because they’re the only ones I’ve ever seen…
7 – I like it, but I know a lot of people who think it’s stupid. Sad how they can’t be a little more open-minded to the slightly strange.
4- Wicked is excellent, if not bizarre. It is absolutely nothing like the musical though.
My favorite musical is My Fair Lady. I even have a poster for the movie verson of it on my door. That is a seriously awsem movie!
8 – I love both of those!
11 – My Fair Lady is also a great musical!
FAVE MUSICALS:
-Jersey Boys
-Wicked (saw it three times!)
-Hairspray
-The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
MUSICALS THAT I HAVE SEEN BUT NOT LOVED:
-Mamma Mia
-The Lion King
-Doctor Doolittle
Oh, and those are only ones I’ve seen as plays on Broadway or at Broadway in Chicago.

13 – Yay! Another 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee fan! Were you one of the on-stage participants when you saw it? I was, and it was really fun.
18- Went to see that recently. Laughed my head off.
My first, and still favorite musical, is The Lion King.
I’ve seen Les Mis. I saw it twice in November, once with my family and once as a field trip for French. IT WAS AMAZING.
Ohhhh, I like the Westside story…… and The sound of music….. but then, I’ve only seen movie productions of them, nothing live….
When your a jet you’re always a jet from your first cigarette……

well, you know, that is really a nice thing to hear

My favorite is RENT

Hey, don’t be dissing musicals on a thread full of musical-lovers. You might provoke one of them to attack you with a spike pie.
My drama class might be doing “Phantom of the Opera”!

I’m not so sure about this year, because we’re doing Annie, which isn’t the best show in the first place, but one of our Annies can’t sing but can act well and the other is a good singer half the time and a terrible singer the other half and an iffy actor. (We double cast major parts.)
I worked the spotlight at the Middle School’s musical a few weeks ago.
I’m playing in the pit for my school’s production of Guys&Dolls.
he is not yet dead
no need to go to bed
he is not yet dead
that’s what the geezer said…
at the 25th annual putnam county spelling bee. my friend kelsey told me about it the other day and it is so cool!
HAIRSPRAY.
Nuff’ said.
The new version left out a few songs, re-did some, and added some. : P
Cats Rocks!
I recently saw Xanadu. It was good, even though it didn’t have any of OUR Muses in it.
Have you seen 1776? It’s not on Broadway, but at the Guthrie.
Well, no, actually they closed it a couple of months ago. It only showed for the month of July, probably because it’s about… well… 1776.
It’s HILARIOUS, and best of all, musical without being cheesy, and historical without being boring.
Ah, c’mon! I love Andrew Lloyd Webber. It’s all a matter of preference, though, I guess….
I agree with you ’bout Into The Woods, though. Awesome musical that. ^_^
Favorite musicals:
Legally Blonde
Wicked
Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (well, not quite a musical…)
Once More, With Feeling (Google it. You’ll see what I mean)
Something else, but I’m too lazy to find it.
And that’s all I can think of.
“Wicked” makes clever allusions to songs in the “Wizard of Oz” movie, too. For example, “no Wizard that there is or was”: “if ever, oh ever a whiz there was, / The Wizard of Oz is one because…”
This thread’s alive!
Wicked would have to be one of my favorite musicals. Probably the allusions to the Wizard of Oz are one of the reasons I like it, since I was in the chorus in my school production of Wizard of Oz in sixth grade.
Our whole family went to see The Lion King last Wednesday. The best part had to be the scenery/costumes.
75 – The costumes and scenery in Lion King are pretty amazing. It makes the musical better than the movie.
76- Definitely!! The only part I really didn’t like was that the actor for young Simba had an annoying voice, at least to me. I got over it, though.
77 – I probably saw a different actor. I saw it a long time ago.
73- Not to mention “Lemons and melons and pears” XD
I saw Lion King in London a loooong time ago. I think I was seven or eight.
Oh, I forgot one in “The Wizard and I”
“I’d be so happy I could– melt!” ~ Dororthy melts her.

Oh yeah, just remembered – I’m going to see Spamalot!
Now, I have to go to dinner. I’m very excited. About Spamalot, not dinner. Food!
Last night I saw Cats!
IT ROCKED!
Saw Hairspray! I loved it!
And I have to say, that was the only time I will ever consider Zac Efron hot, but he was. Very, verrry hot.
“Without Love” is such a great song. i love it, too.
88: I like the civil rights message. John Travolta in a fat suit and a dress- ack.
89- Yeah, THAT image gave me nightmares. For, like a week. And probably the rest of my life.
OMG I had no idea there was a musicals thread! I’ve only seen Wicked, about a year ago and I am still obsessed with it.
91 – I’m a total Wicked fangirl too. :]
REVIVE! REVIVE! REVIVE! MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I’m a fanboy. I just love Broadway musicals. I’m listening to Suessical on my iPod, and my dad’s burning ‘Ragtime’ so I can put it on later.
I’ve seen (All of these went to Broadway at some point):
The 39 Steps
She Loves Me
Wicked
Mary Poppins
The Lion King
Seussical
Ragtime
I’m also writing a Broadway style musical. Where should I put it?
Have you ever had a hunch you should follow you nose?
I wanted to see The 39 Steps so darn badly!
I loved its performance at the Tonys a while ago…2008, maybe? The hats. Beautiful.
I’m going to see Billy Elliot this summer!!!!
What’s that?
It’s amazing. I saw it last summer along with In The Heights.
Wicked
’nuff said.
I saw Wicked actually ON BROADWAY. It has this huge dragon thing – the time dragon – above the stage. It was incredible!!!
American Idiot, anyone? I saw it when it was in the Bay Area and loved it beyond words. Please tell me someone else saw it?
Sadly, I did not sign up for the School Trip to go see it… But from what i heard it was good. Now I’m really angry that I didn’t get the chance…
Anyway, I have never been to a Broadway show! ;(
*gasp!*
I absolutely adore Broadway! I am a living Racheal Barry! I’ve seen a Broadway show, and I live on the other side of the country.
I’ve seen it on stage. I thought it was a bit weird.
All Broadway is a bit weird… Come on, a musical about chess and Cold War politics. It’s epic win. *demands a revival*
I saw Wicked on Broadway in the summer of 2008, and the touring Broadway production of it recently at a more local theater. It’s absolutely amazing.
100- It is. We saw it for my birthday last year.
I watched Rent yesterday on dvd and it was GOOD. A bit inappropriate in places, but whatever.
*hums* “…Emotion, devotion, to causing a commotion…”
Dearly beloved, we gather here to say our goodbyes. Here she lies! No one knew her worth, the late great daughter of Mother Earth. On this night that we celebrate the birth…. in that little town of Bethlehem, we raise our glass, you bet your a** to… la vie… boheme!
To days of inspiration,
Playing hookey, making something
Out of nothing, the need
To express-
To communicate,
To going against the grain,
Going insane,
Going mad
To loving tension, no pension
To more than one dimension,
To starving for attention,
Hating convention, hating pretension,
Not to mention of course,
Hating dear old mom and dad,
To riding your bike
Midday past the three piece suits-
To fruits- To no absolutes-
To Absolut- To choice-
To the Village Voice-
To any passing fad,
To being an us- For once-
Instead of them-
La Vie Boheme!
102.1, 103 –
That is absolutely my favorite scene! *prances happily*
I recently saw a broadway tour version of In The Heights. It was fairly good, I thought – the dancing was amazing, singing was capable but nothing special, and the plot varied between being cliched and having shocking revelations that actually didn’t matter to the overall plot.
THIS THREAD NEEDS A REVIVAL
