In the United States, at least, National Doughnut Day is the first Friday in June. If you check your usual sources, maybe you can get a free one. (See? Some of what you learn here is useful.)
This seems like a perfect occasion to reprise the Feather-y Valentine that Cskia sent to the blog a few months ago.

Thing is, even as a child, when the family went to a doughnut shop, I chose the cruller. Yes, it’s true, I was one of those people.
As fate would have it, I went to college in the birthplace town of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. In fact, the original store had been across the street from the Main Hall of the school, until the neighborhood was torn down to recreate a much earlier phase of the town’s history. Guess they figured Krispy Kreme would look odd in the middle of an 18th-century village. Still, the company was not about to leave its hometown, especially one with so many colleges full of pastry-craving souls, and it was at a shop not far from campus where I had my one sublime doughnut experience.
A group of us traveled there expressly to be on site when the “hot now” light blinked into action. I had never before eaten a doughnut fresh from the conveyor belt. That night I ate an entire dozen. It was like inhaling little puffs of sweet air. Confectionery clouds. A gustatory sorcery of sugary magnificence. It was also 2400 calories containing 144 grams of fat that I had swallowed in about 5 minutes tops. Oh, dear. I had stumbled upon the nuclear option of pastry consumption. I could have eaten 3 dozen without even noticing because they went down the hatch as lightly as breathing.
No subsequent doughnut could begin to compare with that revelatory experience. And I knew in my heart that such a binge could never be more than a once in a lifetime feat. To attempt to repeat its splendiferousness would bring nothing but disappointment and existential despair. The doughnut’s niche in my snack-food roster crumbled away, leaving behind only a slight dusting of confectioner’s sugar….
Flash forward to several years ago, when I was hired to conduct an art project for an annual event at a local gallery. To keep us going through the lunch hour, the organizers plied us with pizza and…yes, Krispy Kreme doughnuts. (They are apparently de rigueur at every cultural event in North Carolina.) Each year that I participated, I ate a doughnut.*
So that is my doughnut history. Truth is, I just don’t care for them very much (sorry, Feather). Now, on the other hand, if today were National Cannoli Day….
*That I ate the pizza, too, should go without saying, but now that you are acquainted with some of my rogue dietary preferences, I suppose I should err on the side of caution and clarify the matter. For the record: I ♥ pizza. Big time. You are permitted a discreet sigh of relief.

I celebrated National Doughnut Day early this year. My Digital Media teacher had my class review for the exam by playing review bingo, and every time someone one, they got three doughnut holes. (In the end, everyone got at least three unless they didn’t want any – that last making no conceivable sense.) He couldn’t give them to us today because today was the exam.

hmm. today i didn’t celebrate doughnut day much. last night my dad bought pizza so we had that. i don’t know if dad is decided to buy doughnuts for today or what?

I am too poor to afford a doughnut. Unfortunate, perhaps, considering I live in a city where Voodoo doughnuts are such a big thing. But I think honestly I like the idea of doughnuts much more than I like doughnuts. Which is not to say that I don’t like them…I would very much like a doughnut right now.* Anyway, I splurged on gelato yesterday and my food fund would be unable to bear the strain of a doughnut. I don’t know where to get free ones.
*Of course, I would very much like most edible things right now.

Most of the big chains are giving away doughnuts today, and I imagine that smaller specialty shops probably are, too.
