Wungs, Part 2

Prarilius Canix’s original description:

A thread to discuss wungs. What are wungs, you may ask? Animal, vegetable, mineral, subatomic particle? Nobody knows. Yet. This thread could be a place to post recent wung sightings and theories, and to cross-check them with other people.

By now, a fair number of MBers have acquired wung companions, formed the International Wung Appreciation Society, and started planning a campaign to raise awareness of wung-related issues.

Continued from Wungs.

Fundraising: A) How much money do we have?
    B) How much money do we need?
    C) If we subtract B from A, do we get a positive number or zero?
    Ca) If we do, Yay!
Cb) If we don’t, go to D.
    D) How much money do we need that we don’t have?
    E) How do we get that much money?
    F) Do E!
    G) Use money!
    H) Party!
    I) Go back to A!

The goals of this Society are twofold: to ensure the contentment and safety of Wungs everywhere and to foster understanding between Humans and Wungs.
In order to do that, we must protect the habitats of endangered wungs, get to know and understand the wungs in our neighborhood and shut down wung-exploiting organizations such as WUNG-TV.

  11. (8) I know science-fiction characters often speak of “this” dimension, but it really should be these dimensions, plural. We live in four dimensions: three of space (height, width, depth) and one of time. The wungs clearly have access to all of them, at least part of the time. The question is whether they also have access to others, and how many they can experience at a time. Maybe they sometimes share two of our space dimensions — say, width and depth — but experience a different “height” dimension. Sometimes I wonder whether that’s what Kokopelli does. It would explain why he looks flat to us (not to mention where his pies come from).

  17. Beatlesrockr(10piepoints)&Hiejayko and JOHN says:

ok, I did some re-search, and Wungs definitely prefer another dimension over this one. I’m sure it’s a lower one, though a little bigger than ours. about 10% of the total Wung population are born in our dimension. Others come for different dimensions. 25% of the total population lives in our dimension as of 2002. It would take a lot of power to travel to a lower dimension. We would be extremely lucky if we could find that kind of power.

Eccentric: 337 (from previous thread) – Wung buttons are edible?

Rudolf: Unfortunately, I have nothing to contribute to the subject of dimensions. Being a literary wung, I haven’t the slightest idea how to explain in scientific terms my species’ tendency to inhabit dimensions outside of your usual four. As for myself and my kin, manipulating dimensions was a skill that came to us naturally with age. At a certain point we simply knew what to do, as if the instinct were always there and had only to be awakened at the proper time in order for the skill to be utilized. I do not know, however, if this is true for the wung species as a whole ; I can only speak for my fellow Greaters.

Re dimensions: I posted this on the science thread, but I think it might be useful here.

The best way to think about dimensions is as qualifications that an object must have to exist. It must have “line” (first dimension); it must have width (2nd dimension); it must have height (3d dimension), and it must be in being for a space of time, even if it is infimitessaly small to have “existed at all” (4th dimension).

Those are all that we’re basically sure about and probably all that we live in…

Maybe, for wungs, there are yet more…

And Bookworm, I don’t believe we have any dough…

MnMnMn_RrR_eEe: That sounds like an interview question - hey, what's that paper?

Rainbowstar: Wait, can you read English as well as speak it?

Rainbowstar: No! Get away from it! That thing cost $200!

MnMnMn_RrR_eEe: You will never discover the secrets of wungs!

      • There are two villages in England called Speen. The one in Buckinghamshire sounds like the most plausible origin as a traditional name for certain species of wung. According to Wikipedia, the name derives from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “wood chips.”In the Wikipedia entry, you can see a photo of the town sign which “depicts traditional local industries of lace making and chair leg turning by bodgers.” (“Bodger” is related to “botch,” which should give you sufficient context for the meaning.)

The village is also the site of a retirement home for horses who have served royal or military duty.

        • More Speen information: near the old Speen Baptist Church you will find “Pye Corner…Follow the track for a few paces, heading south eastwards, to the rear of the double garage on the right belonging to Pye Cottage.” (Incidentally, further down the path, “watch for the Pond’s “resident” heron standing on guard duty.” Though not specifically mentioned, no doubt roses, hedgepigs, and hares populate the environs. Certainly the environs contain hedgerows and gardens aplenty. There is also an earthworks known as Grim’s Ditch. “Grim” supposedly refers to the devil, but we have other theories.)

The village holds an annual Speen Festival in the autumn, celebrating “the very best artistic and creative talent from the village and surrounding areas.” Maybe that’s why wungs are so difficult to find in mid-September.

Oh, and a Feather-Bellied Wung has turned out to be similar to a Garden Wung, but with a large patch of (tangerine-and-raspberry) feathers on its belly. 97. Piggy says:

I don’t understand why we’re trying to explain what wungs are or what they look like. It’s impossible. I quote a post from Master Baker: “Wungs are Things. You may have noticed that if you look too closely at a serving wung, to see what it looks like, or how tall it is, or how many legs it has, it stops serving, and you wait ages for your crumpet. It’s not shy, or offended by being stared at. It’s in its nature to lose coherence and objectivity if you try to pin it down.” To explain what a Thing is, here’s another statement from the same post, regarding the Thing Shop in the Desert Oasis: “Just one thing you need to know about the Thing Shop. I believe it utilises Heisenberg somehow. Anyway, The Things it sells are inherently vague. You can ask for a pink Thing, and it will be acceptably pink, and fit in with your decor, provided you don’t specify what you want it to do, or what size you want. If you ask for a large pink Thing, it will be larger than a standard pink Thing, but it will be less vehemently pink. If you subsequently try to measure its size accurately, it will lose its colour completely. Try to make too many simultaneous measurements on a Thing, and it may disappear altogether. It’s best to discuss it in the abstract.” You see Master Baker mentions Heisenberg. If you didn’t know, the Heisenberg principle states that you can’t simultaneously know the location and the velocity of a particle. If you know the location, you have no way of knowing the velocity, and if you know the velocity, you have no way of knowing the location. It’s basically the same way with wungs. Look directly at them and they begin to cease to exist.

  98. I don’t think there are different types of wungs. As beings with parts protruding into many dimensions other than the ones we inhabit, they are naturally hard to see clearly and may appear differently to different people. Some people see them as fluffy little loaf-shaped creatures, others as colored bouncing balls, others as blurry shadowy shapes like flying manta rays, among many other manifestations.

Because they happily wait on people and do other menial jobs, many people assume that they are naturally docile, subservient, and probably less intelligent than human beings. I think that’s a rash assumption. For all we know, they may be superintelligent beings who deign to work for us in the same way that we feed cats and clean their litter boxes. It’s even possible that they regard us as their cute pets. I’m inclined to that theory, myself.

In any case, they seem to be infinitely trustworthy and good-natured (though with strict notions of propriety) and all-around Good Things — excellent friends to have, whatever they may think of us.

I would like to clarify. I think that in their own dimension, wungs have different species which look different. In our dimension, there is no way to distinguish between the species by sight, only by personality and such, because wungs look different to different people. 114. (111-114) Could you closely reexamine your wungs, please? Some of them sound as if they might be Pokémons. There are superficial similarities, but a trained eye can tell the difference.

As Paul Baker explained early on, one characteristic of true wungs is that they are hard to see clearly. The more precisely you can tell where they are, the harder it is to see what they look like, and vice-versa. It’s a quantum phenomenon related to Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle. So precise descriptions are intrinsically questionable.

    • Bluefire27 and Drake (-_-) says:

Well, yeah, but I have found out something I didn’t know before. Dracoform wungs take on the image of a dragon, but they conceal their true form. So, possibly, they are simply other species of wungs disguising themselves as dragon-like creatures. This makes sense with Drake, because he is from Wales in Britain, and the Greater wung is native to the British Isles. Perhaps Dracoform wungs are affected by the culture of where they live, because a red dragon with the features I’ve described in Drake is an old symbol in Welsh heraldry. This also supports my theory that they are other species of wungs concealing themselves. However, it may be possible that there are Dracoform wungs (that probably have no attachments to culture and whose form becomes harder to find the more precisely you identify it) that the other wungs are mimicking. There is the question of why, though. I must look into that more…

I found this, in an abandoned building. There was a name written on the box it was in. Hugh Williams. Labeled “1802”
    Dialog with Silver Wung:

    Me: Hello.
    Wung: Hello.
    M: Where do you live?
W: Above the farthest skies, yet below the deepest mine.
M: Cryptic… but interesting. How do you get there?
W: Travel on a thought, dive into the depths of philosophy. Turn the whole thing around, and return to where you were. Take the farthest journey, and with a singe step.
M: Cryptic again. I’ll have to decipher this when I get home. How many dimensions do wungs occupy.
W: Less than one, and more than infinity.
M: Finally, a straight answer. Wait a second. Do wungs have a religion, or guiding philosophy?
W: Or religion bases about the truth that when one looks, one does not see. When one does not look, one cannot see. When one listens, one cannot hear. When one does not listen, one cannot hear
M: Then how do you see? Can you see? Can you hear?
W: Wungs see. Wungs hear. No one else. Yet. You have approached, yet you have come no closer.
M: So wung society evolved, and wungs could “see” and “hear”?
W: Why must you be so linear? We observed time, and formed to be like time. Time is not a melody. Time is a single chord. Overtones. Everything.
M: I’m sorry, I don’t understand. Could you explain your metaphor?
W: Our perception of time was like yours. Your perception and truth are as different as “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and a G major chord.
M: So everything happens at once?
W: Everything is at once. Everything is one. True clocks would be like your normal clocks, except all the numbers are at the same place. The hand would proceed normally. The clock is flat.
M: *tries to picture* I get it! I can see it!*
W: Now view the rest of the world like that.
M: *continues trying* Yes… It all makes sense.
W: Come with me. Follow me.

The wung left the point in which the world, more than the world, the universe, was located. I followed.

*At this point, my mind transcended. I could see everything. Time was an infinitely small point, with everything in it. The world was smaller than nothing. I could see everything, extra, fractalite dimensions. I could travel within that point willingly -Hugh.

That’s where the transcript ended. I attempted it, and failed. But it’s coming to me. I nearly have it.

SFTDP (does this coundt as a DP? I mean, my last post was 2 days ago) , but I beleive I’ve discovered a new species of wung. It’s white with small black spots and black paws, and its big black eyes are sensitive to electric light. It can apparently defy gravity and bounce off wall, and it is able to read and write in English, although I don’t believe it can speak it (probably because it has trouble with pronunciation). It is rather shy and won’t communicate with me openly, although it seems rather inclined to trust me. I think, from our little communication, that it was orphaned at a young age and has survived on its own. I believe it’s an adolescent.
Earlier today I fed it a few slices of clementine, which it seemed to enjoy.
It got a very sad look in its eyes when I asked its name. I suppose it wasn’t even named before its parents died or were kidnapped by evil WUNG-TV people.

“Greetings to all fellow wungs who may read this. I am well and unharmed despite being in the Humandimension. I’m in a different form!”

I have decided to name the wung “Awp’tei^m,” a Wunglish word which means “Ape.” It is pronounced “Awpayer-tay-grkum.” I’ll call en “Awpie” for short. Anyway, I’ve found out some stuff about Wunglish from the dictionary. Apparently, the symbols used in writing represent Wunglish letters which do not have a similar English component. “$” ounds like “oowsha,” for example, and # is “zizit.” Captial letters in the middle are spoken in a higher pitch.

Kityera is from Greece? That would make sense, because most greek dragons are considered evil monsters, though there are a few good dragons as well. The fact that dragons are found in practically every culture is because dracoform wungs inspired the picture of a dragon. They vary from place to place, but they are all basically the same. Garden Wung (Communis Wungus): Medium sized, fur is an odd mix of tangerine and raspberry colors.
Feather-Bellied Wung (Pluma Wungus): Resembles Garden Wung, but has patch of tangerine-and-raspberry feathers on belly. Purpose of feathers unknown, speculated to be locomotion.
Greater Wung (Maioribus Wungus): Little is known. Large. Native to British Isles. Favorite target of raggets. Intelligent.
Long-Eared Wung (Porro-auris Wungus): Resembles HPB in many aspects, except for slightly pointed ears. Curious and intelligent. Nicegoodius HPBs speculated to actually be Long-Eared Wungs.
Platinum Wung (Cruis Wungus): Very little is known. Likes cheese and golf.
Black Wung (Atra Wungus): Very aggressive. Predatory and ferocious. Taming not recommended.
Green Wung (Viridis Wungus): Most intelligent wung. Communicates with breathy screeches. Lives in a small group of two to five wungs.
Paper Wung (Lenis Wungus): Flat. Sometimes used as napkin or fan, but doesn’t seem to mind. How it survives is unknown.
Crested Wung (Crista Wungus): Usually pale colors. Has long tufts of fur over eyes.
Dracoform Wung (Draconis Wungus): Dragon-like and spherical. Colors and features vary. Lots of stamina and good sense of direction. Usually found in Europe, but may migrate to areas with similar climates.
Iridescent Wung (Pluvia Wungus): Fur is primarily white, but shimmers various colors in light. Large black eyes.
Starry Wung (Stella Wungus): Fur has a star pattern. Colors vary.
Hiding Wung (Timipulvantilibrus Wungus): skin leathery or paperlike, hides near/in old objects (desks, books), small, intelligent, makes nest-like structures out of paper (or old photographs), can live alone or in large groups. Can see in the dark, light-sensetive. Very shy, only few sightings. Common in Europe, unconfirmed sightings on the US east coast and Bermuda.

  181. I’m afraid the scientific names are all backwards. In binomial nomenclature, the generic name (name of the genus) comes first, followed by the name of the species. Both are in italics, with only the generic name capitalized. So all wungs would be genus Wungus, and the scientific name of (say) the Curious Wung would be Wungus curiosus.

All of these efforts at wung taxonomy, however, assume that an individual wung looks the same to everybody who sees it. That’s not necessarily true, as we indicated long ago.

-However, to make up for the lack of sight, Nighttime Wungs have developed very strong senses of taste, touch, smell, sound, and spacial distortion.

-The children are softer and rounder than the adults and often roll into things.

-The adults are more cat-like, with well developed ears, a dog-like snout, and sensitive receptors in their (feet? paws?).

    COLLECTIVE DATA ON DRACOFORM WUNGS

    Dracoform wung:

A sort of dragon (hence the name); has the head of a wolf, the body of a giant lizard, the wings of a bat, and the talons of an eagle, all covered in shiny crimson scales; eyes are golden, and with pupils like a snake’s; extremely loyal; Any sightings of Dracoform wungs are to be reported, because they are very rare, and cheifly European. A Dracoform wung resembles a slightly spherical dragon. Many different varieties. Usually found in Europe, though some may migrate to other areas with similar climates. Almost unlimited stamina, and excellent sense of direction. Not all Dracoform wungs are the same (see below). They are all some sort of dragon, and they are roughly spherical. But color, appendages (ears, limbs, tails, etc.) can be different. They may have spines down the back, or a sail-like thing. There are probably the most different varieties of this kind. Drake is a Welsh Red. Dracoform wungs take on the image of a dragon, but they conceal their true form. So, they disguise themselves as dragons. They can appear as detailed as they want. This theory is acceptable whether you believe there are different species of wung of if you think they are all the same.

    Some types of Dracoform Wungs:

Welsh Red: Has wolf head, giant lizard body, bat wings, and eagle talons. Covered in shiny crimson scales. Golden eyes with slit pupils. Main population in British Isles.

Greek Blugrey dracoform-Blue-gray with scales, a snout like a cats and a long, scaly tail ending in a point. It’s eyes are large and catlike, with furry tufts of fur like a great horned owl.

(If you see a wung that (vaguely) resembles a dragon, try to remember what it looks like and give it a subspecies name; also, tell me where it came from or where you think it came from. The reason I am doing this is to better preserve the wung population by getting a general idea of their habits, appearences, etc. Thanks.)

I believe a wung has just decided to come out of hiding. He has found purchase in my hair. I shall tell you what he looks like.
He has big eyes, one’s purple, and ones yellow. His fur is long, and a pale brownish colour. It darkens into a greyish-blackish colour around his tummy. He has a stubby little scaled tail, and small arms and legs. Three fingers, three toes. (Each hand, each foot.) He was hiding in the tea kettle next to a defrosting, frozen grape. He seems to speak English very well, and told me that his name was Guise.
    What should I do?

Hullo, the Randomizer dropped me off here. I was meaning to visit anyway sometime, but now that I am here, I will share my subjective image of wung types.

Garden Wung: A small, spherical ball of any solid color.
Feather-Bellied Wung: Light green, shiny feathers on its back curve down into a pointy tail, and the feathers on its belly are orange. Has a beak and beady black eyes.
    Greater Wung: Large and white.
Platinum Wung: Similar to the garden wung, but in a shiny grey metallic color. Also, has four white paws.
Black Wung: A black wung with the shaggy face of a kitten.
Paper Wung: A wung made of origami paper.
Crested Wung: Shaggy fur in a rainbow of pastel colors, but with a rige of longer, white fur down its back.
Dracoform Wung: Covered in silvery-white scales; head has long tufts of white fur. Has a tai lending in a spike. Only wung known to have arms.
Iridescent Wung: Fur is primarily white, but shimmers various colors in light. Large black eyes.
Starry Wung: Has short fur, in black, deep blue, or dark purple. Has small white or butter-yellow stars on its back.

Perhaps wungs, like some Pokemon, “evolve” at different stages in their lives! That would explain Guise’s wings … and why Serendipity keeps typing* about evolution.

    * I have determined that Iridescent Wungs cannot speak English, but can type clumsily. I think they are very intelligent, just unable to communicate it.

Hello, MuseBloggers. I’m Drake. I would like to meet you all sometime. I would really like to be your friend.

He types very well now, the first example being of a few weeks ago and the second just today. He’s shedded his skin and with it his guise as a dragon, now he appears like before but I can’t focus on too much of him anymore without him disappearing and reappearing in some cupboard or drawer. The good news is, he can still employ a guise if he wants to do something with me. He has the ability to control his appearance.

    This is our conversation:

Me: Drake, why do you choose to appear as a dragon-like thing?
Drake: Because, I... is that a tape recorder? Turn it off. I'll just type everything up.
    Me: Oh, thanks.

I have the rest on a document somewhere on the computer. I’ll bring it sometime. Drake was unusually cooperative. He’s had me for a year now and he really trusts me. I think this is very unusual and that he could start a revolutionary chain reaction. One can only hope.

This is what Drake told me:

"Me: So, why do wungs appear so elusive to third-dimensional beings?

Drake: We travel interdimensionlly, and we can teleport through both time and space. This causes our "essences" or our being to be very fluid and we are always within at least five dimensions at a time, though often more. Your human minds wouldn't comprehend it.

Me: Why do you disappear if we try to concentrate on you too much?

Drake: Well, basically for the same reasons as before, but also, our bodies are constantly switching through dimensions, so if you observe us too hard, we may materialize in only four dimensions, which would kill us. If you get too close to us, and we are occupying too many dimensions, you could be sucked into an interdimensional vortex and your entire life force will be either stretched or crushed into oblivion.

Me: So obviously a human cannot travel with a wung through alternate dimensions.

Drake: Correct. Though we can teleport you anywhere in your own dimensions. I'm sorry, but that's the all the information I can reveal.

Our conversation ended there. I am absolutely sure that I will not get any other information out of him. Oh well.

I think we’ve discovered most of what we can about the wungs. To attempt any more would ruin the ineffable mystery of these winsome and indefinable creatures.
As far as I know, there is a thriving population of wungs in almost all parts of the Musiverse. The International Wung Appreciation Society hasn’t really had any crises to deal with.

Well, a relevant issue has appeared. *ahem*
As those of you who follow the Random Thread know, I was, in the unspecified past, involved in a series of events that resulted in a polygamous Unitarian wedding and several arrests. The only result germane to this discussion is the fact that I am no longer permitted to enter the State of Nevada.
The Carson City chapter of our society has not updated me — or any of our other officials — for almost two months. We must face the unsettling possibility that they have either collapsed or been subverted. As I am unable to deal with the situation in person, I have contacted a man in Ramsey Station to observe the chapter and report on it. He is not of traditionally sound mind, but after all, who is? Furthermore, he has acquired no less than five wungs, more or less by accident, so they must see something in him.
I had assumed we would communicate by letter, as most technology that he gets his hands on is quickly destroyed. However, to my incalculable surprise, he has somehow set up a Twitter account. I will not release his username at his request (and to comply with GAPA rules) but his first tweet is as follows:
Have completed assembly of tinfoil cap. Can now operate Internet computing machine safely. Further bulletins as events proceed.

 We’ll see where this goes.
