I really love the spelling of Celtic names. Unfortunately, the pronunciation is often a great disappointment to me. Aodhnait, for example, is simply pronounced, “AY-net.”
I like the name Owen.
I like a lot of fantasy names. Like Lirael.
Or…yeah. There are others, but Lirael is an amazing name.
My friend Eva keeps trying to change her name to Eva (pronounced AY-va, as opposed to EE-va), but I don’t think it’s working. I always forget.

What’s in a name:
Raynpho is a mixture of the first syllable of my name and the first syllable of my sister’s. It was originally for an account we shared, on a different site, and I use it for pretty much everything I need a username for now. Creative, eh?
I just remembered that my very first post was under the name “Icefire,” or something of the like. Which means it was made in 2006, the peak of the Warriors craze in our school… does anyone (aka. GAPAs) know where exactly my first post was?

4- Icefire isn’t Warriors… It’s that dragon series. The Fire Within, Icefire, something-or-other-fire, and I think there’s a fourth one…
(4) The earliest comment I can find is under the name “Raynpho (I am not a dornick), posted in November 2007. You make a reference to having posted earlier, but you must have used a different address, as I can’t find anything. “Icefire” doesn’t show up anywhere. You’ll have to look through “Who’s Here” and see if you recognize your original name.

I made it up in 30 seconds.
I hit apon my name when we needed one for a school blogging project by combining the Hawai’ian princess KAIulani with the explorer Jacques-YVES Cousteau.
I liked the “ai” and “yv” letter combinations. You don’t see many “yv”s in English!
11- Is it pronounced KYE or KAY?
Oh goody! I was origginily Go Bananas!!!!!, posted first in Nov. of 2007, and my first post was “I dunno. What ARE we talking about?” Then I go througha lot of names until I got to this one, which I am determined to keep. Leafy green likes nature. I just like my name! I also have this really pretty midnght blue velvet like dress that I wore for Halloween last year, and I truly feel like Zinc the sorceress in it.
I have this stuffed penguin that I named penguini. I took its name for my own and then it called me names, most of them rude.
My original name–Elentari–meant “Queen of the Stars” in Elvin. Now “Nthanda” means star in Tumbuka. Bit of a theme there, hmm?
My real name (and I’m assuming I can post this) is Sarah, which means princess in Hebrew. I looked on Behindthename.com (my pretty much favorite place EVER for character names) and there are like a billion variations–from “Mor” in Irish to (my favorite) “Zarita”. *Sigh*…I love names and etymology. I could go on and on…but I won’t.
6- I never read that series, but Icefire was made up from the standard for the names they use for their characters.
Maybe it was Icepaw, or something of the like… I’ll go look.
7- It was under a different IP address, I think, so it probably won’t show up under this one.
11- How exactly is it pronounced?
I originally used my horse’s name… And then somewhere along the way I wrote to Muse as “The Nearly Omnipotent Haley”, and, well, I rather liked the sound of “TNO”. And umlauts are just cool.

OK, OK.
When I first came on, I called myself captain_cynomys because Cynomys is the scientific name for prairie dog, and I was obsessed with prairie dogs. Later, when I was obsessed with the Edge chronicles, I changed it to Prarilius Canix. When Museica came along, I couldn’t sail the seas and be a Prime Muser at the same time, so my first alter ego, Sir Ozlips (named after a character in a book by Mark Crilley) was born. Later, on the Pieceful Pie Planet, I became Oob, just because I liked the sound of the name. Finally, I got sick of switching between alter egos, so I collated all my initials into POSOC.
I like Behind the Name too. The little rating thing is fun, and I found some good names. Like Corryn.

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose/ by any other word would smell as sweet.
I like iambic pentameter. Actually, I like any rhythmic poetry… trochaic heptameter is just as nice in theory, but much more rare. Or… whatever The Hunting Of The Snark was written in, it was pretty cool.
Names: I think I’ve explained mine before, but I will again anyway.
My real name is Annie. It is a derivative of Hannah, which I think meant something along the lines of “grace of God.” Somewhat of a misnomer as I am a clumsy atheist. I was named after Anne of Green Gables, I believe.
My first blog name was curious and questioning, which I made up spur-of-the-moment to express my inquisitive nature properly. That’s all.
Currently I go by Dodecahedron. This was my role in a school play adaption of The Phantom Tollbooth a few years ago, and it is my favorite role to date.
I may also be seen (infrequently here, but more common in other places) as tetracontakaidigon. A tetracontakaidigon is a 42-sided polygon.
I like words. Words beginning with an s seem especially pretty. My computer is named singularity, and I attempted to name my hard drive sonance. also good: stellate, sidereal… can’t think of more, but I know they’re there.
I have a thesaurus in my room which I misuse often. Open to a random page, find the most interesting word, and hop through synonyms.

That was me two years ago. I was…weird, to say the least.
…Then again, I might be weirder now…I don’t know.
(38) “The Hunting of the Snark” can be scanned in a couple of different ways. I’d probably call it 4/3/4/3 irregular (mostly amphibrachic, with iambs and trochees thrown in). Amphibrachs, dactyls, and anapests can overlap, depending on where you start counting.
If you like rollicking meters, you might try Swinburne or Dante Gabriel Rossetti. They’re unfashionable nowadays, but they could make poems sing.
I like the word impasse. It sounds rawther elegant, don’t you think?

What is in a name: Oxlin is something I came up with because I liked the sound of it.
My real name is rather dull but no one uses it ever. I go by Sally as my real name. (my parents call me Sally too, they picked it. It isn’t my favorite name but it is unique for people my age.)

My sister’s name means “clear, tranquil, serene” that is totally the opposite of her. And mine means “honoring, praising” or something about “god” I can’t remember. And it’s kind of the opposite of me you could say. If there is an opposite of praise. Oh wait, yes, criticism

Beavo was invented by me and my “clique” of friends in fifth grade. He was a cartoon beaver, with the general attire of Zorro (mask, cape, sword, boots, and feathered hat). We added “the Great” after Beavo, (which was also my first MB name). His enemy was Dr. Wood who shot giant splinters out of cannons, his sidekick was Baby Spud, a potato, and Baby Spud’s pet was called Tater Dawg.
Yup, we were lame back then too.
Anyway. I got bored of “the Great” and changed it to “Online Stalker”, added “Spy Dude Person”, and when the blog went through techhnical difficulties, I deleted all the other words and replaced them with (“(and such)”, added spdzk points, and eventually just shortened it to Beavo.

My blog name has an interesting origin. My brother and I were playing superheroes one time, a little before I returned to MuseBlog for the second time. I needed a superhero name, so we came up with “The Cat’s Meow”. I decided to drop the “The” for my blog name, so I ended up with Cat’s Meow.
In case you guys are wondering (probably not) the Meow in my name is the noun, and Cat’s is an adjective. Or something like that.
My name is Michala. As in all names, it has a story. I can not look or speak my name without feeling my story. I can not tell you my name without giving you a bit of my story. I can not give you my name without giving you my story and myself.
My name means ”What is God?”. It fits. I find God in everything and in nothing.
I do not like my story. I do not like my name.
I call myself Vixen. It is the name I am most comfortable in. It has no story of tears and muck, and therefore, when I call myself it, I am not tears and muck.

My name is Robin. It comes from a story from grandmother’s life. My grandma was working was working at a German hospital during WW2, and it was winter. She would carry around crushed crushed peanuts in her pocket to eat on the way home. One day, she found a small european robin on the ground (they look much different from the ones in the US.). Blog name: It’s been awhile, but I’m pretty sure I chose it because I wanted to go by one word that would sum up my personality. I already liked “eccentric,” and since the definition given by m-w.com did fit me, I used it. I later added “the afterthought” because I felt, again, that the definition fit me.
Real name (Klara): I don’t think it’s common in America – people are constantly misspelling it with a “C” – but apparently it’s more popular in Europe. There’s even a part of Prague named Klarov or something like that, apparently after a saint Klara, at least I think she was a saint. The person who pointed this out to me didn’t speak much English and I, unfortunately, don’t know any Czech, so I didn’t catch the whole story. Anyway, Klara comes from the Latin for “clear” or “bright.”

I was obsessed with the Pooh books. My bedspread was the 100-Acre Wood. I had one of those styrofoam cutters with a hot wire, and created little styrofoam cutouts of all the characters (amazing they sold those things to young children, when I think back now). Our family played Pooh sticks whenever we came to a bridge, including the famous time my dad leaned over too far and his glasses fell into the stream.
Eeyore won my heart — the drawings of his joy at getting his tail back are some of my favorites of all time — and my old, well worn stuffed Eeyore sits on my bedside table to this day.

I’ve always thought that entymology is way cool. I did some research on Greek roots in 5th grade when we were studying ancient Greek history, and I’ve retained a lot of that knowledge. It’s really cool to dissect how a word is put together, and how it might have originated.
It even featured in an encounter with soccer for me. Our referee for that game said that whichever team’s captains (I was one for our team) could translate the Olympic motto, “Citius, Altius, Fortius”, into English could choose which side of the field they wanted to start on. I figured out Altius pretty quickly (Higher), and then we got Fortius (Stronger) while thinking about words like Fortitude, but we couldn’t figure out the last one because it wasn’t a root we recognized.
We started trying to figure out what word would go alongside “Higher” and “Stronger” in a phrase, and both teams came up with “Faster” at the same time. So, neither team got the advantage, because we answered at the same time. But, we walked away from that game with a further understanding of the importance of knowing your roots.

I was wondering if anyone else has any stories of working obscure words into every day conversation. My example, and emmatheduck will probably kill me for this, is once when I actually found a practical use for gardez.
I was at math camp sitting around in the lobby of the dorms, reading or playing Set or chatting or something, and across from me two people were playing a chess game (extremely common at math camp). One had moved a piece into a position where it could capture the queen next turn and said “queen check.” My response was, “I believe the correct term is gardez.”

“Eldritch” is my current favorite word. I like it so much that one of these days I might even switch to “the Eldritch” instead of “the Afterthought” in my blog name.
Have you noticed how silly this year’s campaign stickers are going to sound? “McCain/Palin” doesn’t roll off the tongue at all. Maybe it’s the linguistic difficulties of the “aynp” sound in the middle, or maybe it’s the fact that they both end in “N,” but it’s about as fun to say as a medicine ingredient. And “Obama/Biden”, by contrast, rolls off the tongue too much. Obamabiden, Obamabiden… it sounds like a turkey trying to rap.

Hmm, how I found my blog name I’d rather not tell you.
My real name, Lina (does happy skippy dance because MuseBlog didn’t tell me I spelled my name wrong!!) means something along the lines of “little one” in Italian, which is kind of a misnomer, because everyone says I’m tall for a 10 year old, but I never really noticed the tall thing, I feel normal sized.
I can’t put my real name on the Internet, but this is how I picked my Museblog name.
Once, me and my friends made up a Warriors game, and my name in it was Rainbowheart. I wanted to be Clan leader, but I wasn’t. If I had been, my name would have been Rainbowstar.

304- I agree with you about not naming your children after fictional characters, even if you love the name. However, I have no qualms about naming other fictional characters after fictional characters (provided it’s actually a real name and everything, not like, Arwen or something (although there was a sheep named Arwen, I think)), which is good because I really don’t intend to have any children to name and therefore have to be content with fictional characters.
Re- HP kid names: One of my kids might be accursed with the middle name Tonks. Jessandra Tonks [insert surname here]. Hmm, I’m rather partial to that. She’ll be the eldest girl. Another one might be named James George [insert surname here]. If I have another boy, I’ll name him Severus (Sev for short) Fred [insert surname here]. Luna Ginny [insert surname here]. Zinc Leafygreen [insert surname here]. Lily Rowena [insert surname here]. Remus Sirius [insert surname here]. People always mispronounce my name. That’s why I put a little pronounciation guide up there.
It’s funny, because I always thought that Lyra from His Dark Materials was pronounced LEER-rah, like my name. But I saw a commercial for the movie (I never actually saw the movie- I heard it was horrible) and they pronounced it LYE-rah. I had never realized before then that most people probably pronounce it that way.
Oops, nevermind. It doesn’t have middle names for any of the characters in the books, but it does for their children. But I do think that Ginny’s middle name is Molly; JKR might have mentioned it in her books somewhere.
